The Kittens called it spot on and were called over-reactionaries at the time by other fans and indeed some of the writers.
I sort of see a parallel with the current issue of same-sex couples marrying. As the "established" position looks less and less credible, so the claims from the establishment to try and justify that untenable position become more and more outlandish. We've seen the stupidity that Rick perry has voiced (and music used) in his recent ad and all the anti-marriage bigots and how ludicrous they are and ehre we see a similar theme with Drew and his outlandish claims.
Strangely, he doesnt get it. if he had written a scene where tara was killed in the kitchen (which made more sense given the gun) or Tara dying trying to save Willow or others then that would have been at least Tara going out in some glory and whilst we would have no doubt been annoyed at her passing, at least it would have been in a positive way, if only in terms of her showing love through self-sacrifice. But to have her die just after having sex with Willow, in their bedroom with no way for that bullet to get to her the way it does, to kill her that ridiculously and pointlessly (as it served no genuine story purpose) and then claim it Wasn't an example of the "Dead/Evil lesbian2 cliche is just proof that he truly doesn't get it.
Tara & Willow Together Forever!! Blessed Be Eternally!!
