Love's Redeemer (REVISED)

Postby LtSticks » Wed Nov 02, 2005 12:22 pm

Ok mods if there's another thread with the old version in, could you delete it please? Thanks.

Basically I was pissed off at my own work lol, I didnt like the way I started it, so I took a look through all my plans for it and changed it a little. Chapter one is here, I may have Two up tonight, it is possibly going to be completely different from how it was before, but the plot will still be the same, just taken from a different direction. I know I know, writers are just insufferable :p

I should warn of serious angst, and there will be character deaths later, but I'm hoping the good parts will balance it out, this was meant to be my version of resolving S6 matters, and showing my idealistic beliefs in love being able to overcome things. So, I hope you all enjoy.

~Emma

Rating: R, I’m not too sure though, it will definitely be up to NC17 at some point but not yet.
Spoilers: Season 6, up to All the Way, but NOT the end (you’ll see why soon)
Pairings: W/T
Disclaimer: Characters and locations are owned by Mutant Enemy and our dear friend Joss, the idea was mine.

Summary: Suffice to say that despite Joss’ stupidity, I liked the idea of Willow going dark. And no, before you all scream, she’s not going to be all evil and dark. It’s an idea of the darkness within, and how love can be a redeeming force. Don’t worry, there’ll be a load of W/T goodness, and humor, but beware of angst, there’s gonna be a load of pain, but it will all be ok in the end. I promise :)
Notes: Ok everything up to All the Way has happened, apart from the end where Willow does that awful spell. The story starts from the bedroom scene and well, goes along from there…have fun. Another note is that Willow has heard of Rack before, there will be a bit inserted when the time comes, explaining how. And Amy is still a rat. I’m planning to deal with the Buffy was in Heaven thing, because I felt our Scoobs were FAR too blind to see what was going on. Stupid Joss.

Chapter One:

“ I don't think I could really-“ Willow started, but was interrupted by the angry tone of her girlfriend.

” You know what, can, can we not do this now? I'm tired.” Tara sighed as she got into bed, turning away from Willow.

Willow agreed, no need to keep on with the fighting, surely there was another way. ” Okay. Let's just forget it ever happened.”

She turned to the dresser, pulling off clothes as she went. In the mirror she caught a brief glimpse of Tara’s prone form, huddled under the covers. She sighed, feeling helpless, wanting to do something, anything to make it alright again. She was a powerful witch, for Gaia’s sake, she had resurrected a Slayer, taken on a Hell god, and now she was seemingly powerless to resolve a fight with her lover?

Her eyes fell upon the bowl of herbs lying on the dresser, emerald eyes catching sight of a sprig of Lethe’s Bramble. Without even realising, her overactive mind went into overload, reciting a number of spells she could use to sort things out, to make Tara forget-

Whoa, waitaminutewaitaminutewaitaminute. Make Tara forget?

A flash of memory entered her mind, of struggling to push through a crowd of people whilst a Hell god turned the woman she loved into yet another insane victim. She remembered the nights after they had defeated Glory, and restored Tara’s sanity, the nightmares and tears that both had suffered in the aftermath.

Was she as evil as Glory? To even think of manipulating Tara like that?

A wave of nausea hit her, and her legs travelled faster than she had ever imagined, before she found herself in the bathroom of the Summers house, emptying the contents of her stomach. That pizza was good, but I didn’t want to have it twice. Yuck.

After an eternity, she let herself sprawl onto the floor, taking a comfort in the cool tile against heated flesh, the night’s events coming back to taunt her, with voices not unlike Cordelia’s-how she had treated the woman she loved with such blatant disrespect, and the ever rising guilt in her threatened to evoke a second round of vomiting.

Giles’ voice came back to warn her, of the risks she had taken in bringing back Buffy, and she knew, without any shred of doubt, that he had been right, and she wondered how she had gone so far as to not see the path she was walking down.

She let her eyes close, against the tears and self-recriminations, and wondered briefly of what to do. She had felt so confident in herself, in the person she had become.

No, you hadn’t. You felt confident in acting out this person, hiding plain old Willow, so noone could find her anymore. Right?

Never before had she felt so lost, and felt that she really deserved it.

Her legs filled with a strength that she had not realised she still possessed, she walked back into the bedroom she shared with Tara, picking up clothes and redressing, almost like an automaton. Glancing quickly at the figure in their bed once more, she quietly let herself out of the house, pausing only to pick up a stake, before venturing out into the night.

As one, they turn to the soda machine. It flies back into the door like a cannonball. Willow looks at it, at Tara. She doesn't let go of her hand.

Ooooooo I like so far. I must confess, I liked the whole 'Willow going Dark thing', too. However, I hated how Joss did it. So, I can't wait to see where you go with this, and just how you about it. I missed the first (unrevised hehe) Love's Redeemer, so I get to venture into this plot line all unspoilt.

*sits back woth popcorn to see where it goes*

Great start! :clap

Thanks for the comments Kittens, I have to admit I'm rather nervous regarding this fic, if there's one fic I could be hated for, this is the one LOL. Actually I don't think it would go that far, but still, I know certain chapters are going to be making me uncertain about reactions, I only hope I manage to pull off the act of convincing readers of it...eek!

Chapter Two may be up later, I have potential dateage tonight so um...we'll see :p

Wow. I saw "All The Way" earlier in the week (as part of a Halloween themed program block), and I gotta say how much I liked it...except for the end *shudder*. I gotta agree with gabbles that I liked the whole "Darth Rosenberg" idea, just not how Joss pulled it off.

Can't wait to see where this goes. Hopefully better than the middle of Season 6, if I'm lucky. :wtkiss

LOL well I like you already cos of your sn *bows down*

I personally loathe Joss for his stupidity (hence my occasional outbursts of "stupid Joss! stupid Joss!") and feel he could have handled it far better. Whether or not I can is debatable...*shifty look*

Really liking this one so far. It's nice to see S6 get redeemed - it had so much wasted potential. Keep up the good work!

Okay, I'm interested in this fic. I usually don't read s6 fics, because they usually don't start until sometime after Tabula Rasa, and for me, that's pretty much too late for anything to really be salvaged. But here, it's the end of All the Way, but without the mindwipe spell.

I’m planning to deal with the Buffy was in Heaven thing, because I felt our Scoobs were FAR too blind to see what was going on.

So, let me get this right. No abusive Willow and the Scoobs acting like they actually care about each other? Yup, definitely interested.

Though I admit, I am a bit leery about the mention of character deaths. Obviously it won't be Willow or Tara, but still, I don't like the idea of any of the Scoobies dying. I'll have to see how it goes.

Willow realizes that maybe she's been acting unreasonable, which is good. But she doesn't talk to Tara about it, which is perhaps not so good.

Looking forward to more.

I'm gonna have an update tonight, been busy with work and an assignment for uni over the last couple days :(

Hmm...is it the right time to say its not going to be a Scooby? Or is it? :p

Willow realizes that maybe she's been acting unreasonable, which is good. But she doesn't talk to Tara about it, which is perhaps not so good.

I've read a lot of fics in where they can automatically just tell each other everything, and I like them a lot, but I know all too well myself that sometimes, even with someone who you share your soul with, it's difficult at times to confess your deepest fears/insecurities etc etc. Ultimately the fic is partly about Willow finding her true place in the world (which we all know is with Tara :)) I wanted to drag her inner demons out and ultimately conquer them, and get happy W/T as a result. Rest assured that she won't be keeping secrets for long, she knows who to trust with them. I just got a bit annoyed that it wasn't until S6 and Wrecked that Joss addressed the issue of Willow worrying that she wasn't good enough for Tara, I felt personally that considering the people she had had to deal with pre S1 and for much of high school, she wasnt going to get out of it without some insecurities.

Ok wow, I went on a weird tangent then. Sleep deprivation plays weird tricks on me.

Off to sleep then will write up Chapter 2 :D

OK here it is. I'm not sure if Im personally happy with it, possibly because Im trying to drown my sorrows as my best friend is moving away back home, and I'm quite heartbroken about it. But I hope it's ok, it's fairly small and basically sets a little bit of the plot up for the rest of the fic, so I hope you all like :)

Chapter Two:

Morning crept upon the people slumbering in the Summers house, before they anticipated. All had endured a night of the most weird variety; Dawn had ended up parking-and having her first kiss-with a vampire (talk about Buffy-like), Buffy had suffered the stress of both discovering one of her best friends was to marry the capitalist ex-demon of the group, and also try and save her sister from potential sire-age from her date. And Tara had had possibly the worst argument she had experienced with Willow.

The blonde stirred quickly upon feeling the sun’s rays upon her face, streaming through the window of the bedroom she shared with Willow. She hadn’t slept well, the fight still replaying through her mind. Perhaps even more upsetting was that Willow hadn’t slept next to her, choosing-she assumed-to sleep on the couch.

She sighed wearily. They both needed to talk at length, and soon. Maybe now was a better time, when both had had at least a small chance to sleep on it.

Quickly showering and dressing, she padded down the stairs, and turned towards the living room to find…no Willow.

Tara frowned, letting her senses expand to take in the house. Closely attuned to her lover, she could always tell if Willow was near, and vice versa. Now it seemed as if Willow was not at home. Her frown deepened, the couch wasn’t slept on, by the looks of it. Had Willow gone out? At night, where both knew of the dangers that lurked outside?

Despite the anger still in her heart after their fight, the blonde felt a sudden flash of fear, and walked into the kitchen, finding Buffy there, reading a newspaper with lacklustre effort.

“Hey,” the Slayer greeted her, glancing at her briefly before returning to the story of a dancing budgerigar.

“Hey,” Tara replied, taking a seat next to Buffy. “Did you see Willow this morning?”

“Um, no, I thought she was at an early class,” Buffy frowned at the blonde witch. “Shouldn’t you know, being, you know, the one who shares a bed with her?”

“We had a fight,” Tara’s heart ached with the admission. “I thought she had slept on the couch, but…” she hesitated, fearing she would sound foolish. “It feels like she went out last night, she hasn’t been here for hours.”

Rather than take the sceptical stance Tara had expected, Buffy looked concerned. “You think she would have done something stupid? She knows better than to go out wandering at night.”

“That’s what I thought, but she’s been acting…”

“Weird? Un-Willowlike?”

“Kind of. We were both upset last night, I think. God, if something’s happened to her-” I’ll never forgive myself. No fight is worth losing Willow.

“I’m sure it hasn’t. She might have gone to someone’s to stay, besides, she’s a super witch, even with vamps on the loose she can handle herself.” Buffy spoke with confidence, yet frowned at Tara’s darkening expression. “What is it?” she asked, feeling worried for the first time in years, it seemed. All her days had been filled with the coping of losing heaven, and hiding her secret from her friends, finally it seemed like life was starting to seep back into her veins.

“We…we fought about magic. Willow’s been using too much of it. I think she and Giles had an argument about it a few days ago, but we never fought like that before, not even when…”

“Glory?” Buffy asked, already knowing about the argument the two witches had had, before the Hell God had caused devastation. Tara nodded silently.

The Slayer took a deep breath, going into action. “Ok, this is what we do. You, go to class, or go to the Magic Box, see Anya or do whatever you need to do to calm down. I’ll get Xander to take Dawn to school and then he and I can go see where Willow’s at. Ok?”

Tara managed a weak grin. “Look at you, going large with the butch.”

Buffy felt herself burst into laughter, feeling genuine mirth touch her heart. “I do try, apparently it’s part of the Slayerdom.”

***********************************************************************************

In another part of the town of Sunnydale, a redheaded figure lay sprawled upon a bed, quietly reflecting on the mistakes and misdemeanours she had both exacted and experienced. It was time to face up to fears and past recriminations, and to start atoning for them.

***********************************************************************************

And in the shadows, a dark figure watched. Soon, it would be time to begin his plan.

Chapter Three:

She’d spent hours thinking about things, perhaps for the first time in her life there weren’t any distractions in her mind from miscellaneous topics. Every thought of her being was focused on what she had done, what she had almost lost, and what she could lose now.

She felt an aching need to talk to someone, confide in her deepest fears and darkest actions. And on a normal day, this person would have automatically been Tara. Now, the mere thought of telling her girlfriend what she had nearly done to her, sent a spike of pain through her heart. Would Tara leave her? You wouldn’t blame her if she did.

Buffy wouldn’t be a good choice to have such a deep and meaningful conversation with, she had been distracted ever since she had been returned to life, from the hell dimension she had spent months in. Willow felt a troubled frown spread across her face, for a while, she had been getting the sense that things weren’t all that they seemed with Buffy. Yet another thing to perhaps atone for, had she messed things up, brought her back…broken?

She knew she needed to talk to Giles, he had been right after all. She couldn’t deal with the look of disappointment she knew would be given by him, just yet. But soon, she decided. He, out of all the people in their group, knew what it was like to mess with magic in a bad way. Maybe he could offer some advice that previously, she had been too arrogant to accept.

Another person came to mind, and a faint smile lightened her expression. It wasn’t perfect, but maybe they could help, in the best ways that they could.

Dragging herself off the bed, she showered and dressed, holding onto the thread of hope she had created within herself, and descended the stairs to find…

“Mom?”

**********************************************************************************

“Ok, Dawnster’s off to school, now mission Find Willow commences,” Xander declared, walking back into the Summers house.

Buffy looked up from the dining room table, a list in front of her. “I made a list of the places she might have gone, figured you might know some more as well. Tara added some before she went off to class.”

“Tara went to class? I thought she’d be helping.” Xander said, very surprised.

Buffy grinned slightly. “She did it under threat of Slayer torture, they’ve been fighting, so I thought, maybe they need space.”
“Ok..and just why have you written the list in different colored pens?”

A red blush that could rival the hue of a tomato appeared on the Slayer’s face. “Well, Willow says it works, and I was bored.”

Xander grinned. “Good to see our redhead has rubbed off on you…oh, that went to a different place just then.”

“Oh yeah. Better not tell Tara that one.”

“Definitely not, have you seen that girl wield an axe?”

“Pretty good huh?”

“Scary. Let the mission commence, I don’t want to give Wicca Girl a good excuse to chop my head off.”

********************************************************************************

Parents seem to exist to surprise me at every turn, Willow mused.

“Oh, hello Willow,” her mother greeted her cheerfully as the redhead stepped down the last few steps, to walk into the kitchen. Her mother sat quietly reading an academic journal, though for the time being, all attention was focused-for once-on her daughter as she sat down next to her.

“Um…what are you doing here? Ok, that sounds bad, I mean I’m happy to see you, I didn’t expect you to be here.”

Her mother gave a small laugh. “Well last time I checked, I lived here occasionally. I got back a couple of nights ago, your father is coming home this week as well. We decided to take a break from the lecturing, enjoy some quiet time. I didn’t expect to see you here, actually. Aren’t you still living with… Buffy?” the recollection of the name seemed to take a lot of effort, but Willow found herself appreciating her mother for it.

“Um, yeah. I’m guessing I didn’t wake you last night when I got in. I...just needed some time alone. You know, house full of people, gets kinda hard to be quiet at times.” The redhead wondered just how bad an excuse that was, but Sheila seemed to accept it readily.

“And, are you, um…still with…”

“Tara? Yeah Mom, we’re still, you know…” Willow trailed off, even the casual mention of her girlfriend making her feel horrendously guilty.

“Good, she seems like such a nice girl. Very well mannered, and smart too.”

“Not going to mention the fact that she isn’t Jewish?” Willow remarked with a faint smile.

“Does she make you happy?” Sheila asked pointedly.

Willow paused for a second, the answer coming straight to her heart and soul, yet conflicted by her own question of whether she made her lover just as happy. “Happier than I’ve ever been,” she replied finally.

“Then, despite what you may think, I think she is perfect for you. Religion doesn’t always come into that.”

The redhead gazed at her mother as if she was an unknown lifeform. “Um…did you hit your head or something, because…”

“Because I’m not talking about psychoanalysis, or statistics? Please, Willow. I may not be the best mother in the world, but I do care. I can tell that she makes you happy, just as I can tell that things aren’t the best right now. Am I correct?”

“Yeah. We..we had a fight. I wanted to give her space.”

“Then give her space,” Sheila replied, letting her arm drape across her daughter’s shoulder. “Then go home, and talk to her. I know we haven’t talked much, but it helps.”

“Yeah, it does,” Willow agreed, feeling an almost awe at this woman, who, before this, had probably only had conversations with her on some paper, and incidentally, had tried to burn her at the stake. Though that wasn’t entirely her fault, a Hansel/Gretel demon had held sway over all the parents’ minds.

“I think I need to see someone first. Run some errands. I’ll stop by sometime this week, can you let me know when Dad is back? I want to see him as well.”

“Of course honey, oh and make sure you and Tara can come round at some point, I’d like to see her again.”

Seems my girl has secured a soft spot in my mother’s heart. Never thought that would happen.

“Ok, I’ll check the classes she has, oh wait…Tara said she doesn’t have any classes today…ok, I’ll check the Espresso Pump, the library and the Magic Box. I need to talk to Giles anyway, he’s been a bit grumpy lately.”

“I’ll check the haunts on campus, and the rest on the list,” Xander said, pleased he had gotten the fewest spots.

The two Scoobies quickly parted to search for their redheaded friend, and Xander made quick work of checking the areas Willow was fond of spending time in, and found…no redhead.

Frowning, he wondered if Buffy was having better luck, and was about to head over to the Magic Box to see Anya when his cellphone rang.

“Hey.”

“Xander?”

“Willow?”

***********************************************************************************

“Um, can we meet?”

“Well, sure. We’ve been looking all over for you. Where have you been?”

“I’ll tell you when I see you. Meet you at Kingman’s Bluff, in about half an hour?”

“Sure, I’ll be there.”

“Oh, and don’t tell anyone, ok? I just need to talk to you alone.”

“Sure, I’ll see you soon.”

***********************************************************************************

That was weird, Xander thought as they both disconnected.

Going back into the car park for college visitors, he got into the car and started it up, feeling more and more confused by the second.

Will better have some answers.

*********************************************************************************

Kingman’s Bluff was a typical parking spot for teenagers, with a not so typical secret beneath. According to some texts, there was a temple dedicated to some dark magic deity or something. Willow wasn’t sure if the texts were reliable, but she could feel the darkness radiating from it. Or maybe it was residual energy from too many horny teenagers. Huh.

“Hey,” she heard Xander’s voice behind her, and turned to see him walking toward her. “You sure don’t make things easy,” he gave an easy grin, one she didn’t return.

She didn’t remember rushing to him, clutching him to her with a desperation she hadn’t realised she really felt, didn’t remember the tears that she had allowed to fall. It didn’t matter that she didn’t remember them, she needed to let the pain and fear and guilt out, and he was the one he could count on, aside from her soulmate.

Hours later, they sat side by side, contemplating things. Willow had poured out her heart with the tears, and he had offered support. Now they just sat, staring at the sun, as it hung in the evening sky.

“Do you hate me?” Willow asked, after an eternity.

“Of course not, you made a mistake, and you know that.”

“She must hate me enough as it is, without knowing of this.”

“She loves you. You know what, Buffy had to make her go to class today, because she was so worried about you. Threatened some Slayer violence or something.”

“What? Buffy threatened to hit Tara? I’ll kill her!” Willow growled, and started to stand, but was stopped by her childhood friend.

“She didn’t mean it literally, ok? Don’t go all murderous on our Slayer, it took us enough effort to bring her back.” Xander attempted a wisecrack, but it didn’t help to lighten the redhead’s mood.

“What do I tell her? God, I don’t even know where to begin.”

“Just tell her what you told me.”

“I guess. It’s different though, it’s Tara.”

“I kinda guessed that.”

“Look, things won’t get better if you don’t face up to them. Things left unsaid…usually turn out bad. I’m not the wisest person on the planet, but I know that for a fact.”

Willow considered things. “I think I should stay at my parents again tonight. I don’t want to be apart from her…but I’m scared of hurting her.

Xander looked at her for a moment, then nodded. “Ok. Do you want me to talk to her at all?”

“You can tell her you saw me, I think she should hear most of it from me, you know?”

“I’m not going to lie to her, it’s an proven impossibility, like when she asked me if Anya and I had…”

“Please don’t finish that sentence Xand, I don’t want to have nightmares tonight.”

“Well my point is proven. I won’t tell her all the details, but if she wants to know things, she has a way better than Slayer torture, to get info out of me. Be warned.”

“Duly noted. Let’s go, the sun’s going down soon. I don’t want vamps to deal with tonight.”

Re: Love's Redeemer (REVISED)

Hi Sticks
I always thought an intelligent and sensitive person like Willow would've stopped and thought about things if she upset Tara. I like the path you've taken with this story, and you've depicted characters and setting in full 3D colour. :)
I did guess that she'd gone home, but what a surprise was Sheila's behaviour! Hope for a meaningful relationship with parents on the horizon - that'd be nice. I'd always felt for Willow, never having that 100% support just for her (usually given by a parent) until Tara turned up (I know Xander was there, but I'm talking 100%). No wonder she's scared of losing Tara. However it was good to see her able to turn to Xander this time, and to have some relief from her misery through his support.
I think this was something the writers missed/ messed up in the series around the time of the Lethe's bramble incident: the deeply buried misery Willow must've been feeling from her insecurities and the things she was doing to hide them. You've realised this in your fic to some extent.
I'm looking forward to seeing how you work Willow & Tara through this and the Buffy problem.

I missed commenting on the last update (stupid college - bad! bad!), but I just wanted to leave my thoughts on chapters 2 and 3.

It's so nice to see Willow's mom given a little bit more character than she had on the show - I always thought someone as sweet as Willow had to have some good parental advice in there somewhere! I'm really enjoying the W/T interaction in this story as well - you've really done a wonderful job with Willow's inner turmoil, and how she's playing out some of Tara's possible reactions in her head.

Anxiously waiting for the next update! :bow

Oh wow...I had anticipated tomato throwing at chapter 3. Well not THAT far, but I prefer later chapters that I've been planning in my head, so I was very touched to see no tomatoes. LOL.

spells42: I tend to love fics which have Sheila as a totally clueless person, but I wanted to have something that would show her as more than just a parent who was away a lot, you're spot on about Willow never having complete support, which I always felt contributed to some of the things she did on the show.

I really was worried about having Xander being the confidant, because we all know if Willow has a crisis, it should be (and normally is) Tara. But I had to think about who she would go to, if she couldn't (or was too afraid to at that point) go to Tara, and it was between Buffy and Xander. Buffy at this point is still oh no I've been dragged from heaven, though she is at the point in my story starting to get out of that funk on her own...I really hated how long they took to get to that point, and how CLUELESS the rest were lol.

Willow's insecurities and the lengths she would go to to avoid them, is a subject that hits me personally, so I hope I did it justice in the fic :)

Thanks for the cool feedback :D

Tarafied4Life: Bad college lol (I know what you mean, I'm handing in a paper today and collecting a new one to write, as well as attending a Lit seminar to get info for ANOTHER one...grrr)

Re: Parents. I kinda feel that I can relate to Willow, regarding having parents who aren't always there. Don't get me wrong, I love and respect my parents, and know I wouldn't be where I am without them, I always felt though that it was (in my case) a competition between myself and my older sister, and I didn't feel as if they knew I was there at times. They don't now though cos I'm living away lol. So I kinda wanted to get a part in the fic that had the parents acknowledging that they hadnt always been there for Willow, and yet supported her (hence the lack of outrage over W/T...they've gone beyond thinking its a fad too. Yay :p)

Thanks muchly :D
