Some years ago an ex-girlfriend who was into belly-dancing insisted I give it a try. At last I did, found it a wonderful experience and have continued with it off and on ever since.
Traditionally, one takes a dance name. I took "Zahir" and have been using it as my nom-de-net (sometimes with the patronym "al-Daoud" because my father's name was David). Only about one in ten belly dancers is male (the term "middle eastern dance" is actually more accurate--belly work is a speciality, while "beledi" is a rhythmic style).

"O let my name be in the Book of Love.
If it be there, I care not of
That other book Above...
Strike it out! Or write it in anew.
But let it be in the Book of Love!"
