Blood Ties writer comments on W&T scene

The writer for Blood Ties, Steve DeKnight, was on the Bronze
Blood ties was his first script for the show and the W&T 'snuggle scene' was cut since the show was running 2 min too long (I'd have preferred they cut the Xander Giles bit actually, xander johnsoning about dawns crush on him was just a little much)

I am glad to hear it wasn't for other reasons. I am still not over the shoulder scene being cut because it was too perfunctory.

It's pretty much standard operating procedure to over-write a script. That's because if the show runs long you can always cut stuff, but if the show runs short you're in deep doo-doo.

When I wrote for You Can't Do That On Television I would always turn in a 50-sketch script, even though there would be only 35 to 45 sketches in the final version of the episode. You always want to have some padding.

And it isn't always the "bad" stuff that gets cut, either. The funniest thing I saw during my tenure on the YCDTOTV set was a piece of "padding" that never made it onto the air. You cut where the story structure demands that you cut, which isn't always the same thing as cutting out the bits that don't work well.

Xita, can you clarify the "shoulder scene" you're refering to?

Bob, did you work with Alanis Morisette?*G*

I met Alanis once, during a visit to the set that came after the summer I spent working full-time there. She was 12. I'm also the person who wrote the only script where she got green-slimed.

I believe the "shoulder scene" is a reference to Primeval, where Tara went to rub Willow's shoulders but Joss cut it out because he said Amber was "too perfunctory" when she did it.

Aaah, the green slime eps!*G*

Yep, now I remember the weird, abrupt edit from Primevel.

Thanks!

thanks, I got the meaning
but hey, hard to believe. Just can't see Amber playing Tara as too 'stiff' with giving Willow a back run. If anything I would think such a scene might have come off too hot with Amber in it
