There's and interesting article here called 'Teen Witches, Wiccans, and “Wanna-Blessed-Be’s”: Pop-Culture Magic in Buffy the Vampire Slayer' by J. Lawton Winslade that has a nice section that explores the way the witch community on the show can be seen as a metaphor for the gay community. He writes: "...in the program, “lesbian” could be seen as the shadowy, unspoken other of “witch.” Both words are charged with cultural expectations and fears, just as the two groups are often associated with each other in areas of feminist spirituality. Indeed, much of the politics surrounding Wicca seem to parallel the gay and lesbian movement, even down to Wiccans borrowing a few terms, including the performative act of “coming out of the broom closet.”
There's some other very interesting gay/witch interpretation in this article, but it's hidden about half way through. Take a look at it here.
there's also a good paragraph there that addresses the topic o' the day (wednesday). i think i'll go post it.
neat!
