In an earlier response it was mentioned that you can change the time zone of the board, so that messages have the correct time. I've looked at the edit profile screen and the account preferences and I can't find that option. What am I missing?

Quick question about avatars. How large is "too large"? Give me a file size. 500K? Less? More?

Thanks in advance!

Well a 56K modem seems to be able to download at 3-4K/second.

So your 500K file is going to take almost 2 minutes to download.

personaly I'd say 50K is the max, but that's just my opinion.

Pipsqueak, the limit is 300k.

But as one of those 56k people, I would really like to see fewer of those big avatars, I know they look great but I hate it when it takes minutes (instead of seconds) to load a thread because of a several big avatars :rolleyes

Warduke, I understand. I'm on a cable modem, so I tend to take the fast speeds for granted! Thanks for the info.

Just finished a new avatar (not this one) and have finally squeezed it down to 300K, but I should probably put it away for a few days until I either (a) figure out how to shrink it even more, or (b) get bored with it and decide not to use it altogether.

Guess it's a good thing I don't post much! :p (OK, relatively much.)

Oooh, can we still see the avatar, even if you decide not to use it, Pips? :pray I would love to at least see what your creative mind conjured up. :)

3001 kittens [img:956d41ad3e]http://thekittenboard.com/board/images/smilies/kitty.gif[/img:956d41ad3e] and growing! Congratulations, all Big Kittens (not cats, of course, but big kittens).

But my question is if there's anywhere that there are animations of w/t that are livejournal icon-sized. Maybe this should be on the media thread, but yeah.

I'm just finishing a psych paper that incorporates some Buffy talk in it, and I remembered something I'd read (I think) here that I'd really like to add before it's done.

I think it was from an interview or article posted to this forum awhile ago in response to Joss Whedon's infamous ]
In it, the writer states the quote, than says that this probably came from some famous movie maker's theory - but that Joss was misinterpreting it.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Should I post this in a different topic? It's due tomorrow afternoon, so any help would be [i:765f281a00]immensely[/i:765f281a00] appreciated.

I know common BtVS fiction names:

Spuffy
W/T

But I heard someone use a Buffyverse name in a fiction/parody story - in a not very happy way - which I haven't been able to figure out, and I'm hoping someone can help me: Tequila

Anyone?

Dawnie Faith you can find the quote in two places the first place I ran into it is in the introduction of a book called 'Feature Filmmaking at Used Car Prices' it's in the introduction by Ray Carney (professor of Film at Boston University and noted Film Writer), and is also part of his manifesto for making films which you can find on his website.

However, Ray Carney himself took the idea from John Cassevetes, whom Ray Carney adores. John Cassavetes was an American film actor, director, producer, and even distributor. He made several incredible films but because they were personal and because of the way he worked he had a lot of problems getting them out to a wider audience. One of his most famous films is Women Under the Influence (starring his wife Gena Rowlands). Cassavettes meant to say this as a way of expressing his frustration with Hollywood and the superficiality of American film in the late 60's early 70's. As both an actor and a director he felt stifled creatively and wanted to express and portray a more real and critical view in his films. He is noted often as one of the pioneers of independent film in America.

If you want anymore on this e-mail me - as I can go on and on about Cassavetes - and probably everyone is bored with my rant by now

I went Googling & found a fanfic. I don't know if it fits in with the context you saw it, & it doesn't sound like a slash name, but it's Xander's Drunken Sex Romp - One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Floor. I haven't read it but I'm assuming it's between him and Amy as it starts with him de-ratting her.

Does that make any sense with what you saw?

No, it doesn't.

It was here on the Kitten (or much more likely, a sub-board of the Kitten), and it was a fanfic, or maybe a rant, about how Kittens were saving the world from bad fanfic parings and triples.

And the story ended with the worst (I think) triple of all - tequila. I never could figure out what it meant, and its been nagging at me for months. And I've not been able to track it down again either.

Postby bzengo » Mon Mar 24, 2003 10:01 am

No, I appreciate the help, even if it didn't.

It was this story about how Xita and some kittens were in heating/AC duct in a hotel in Vegas, going from room to room, looking at the different pairings, as they fought the good fight to stop the horrible shipper parings different people came up with.

And at the end of the night, someone came up with Tequila, everyone shuddered - and that was the end of the story.

I don't remember if it was an actual Pens story - although I don't think so. Or if it was a rant on one of the sub boards, or what. I've searched everywhere, and I can't even find a hit on Tequila, so maybe it was all just a dream... but I don't think so.

Oh well - anyone who can remember what in the hell I'm talking about, I'd sure appreciate any help. It was about two months ago I think.

[b:310674eb6f]Alright, this is for all you web-savvy Kittens who have awesome web pages that I love visiting.[/b:310674eb6f] [img:310674eb6f]http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif[/img:310674eb6f]

I've been trying to buy my own space in the space that is the web but I've got no idea who to go through and where to start.. there's so many options that my little kitten head is spinning.. any advise from the wise kitten elders who already have their own domains being hosted? horror stories? success stories? bedtime stories?? (just kiddin' about the last one..)

seriously though, i can't tell which web hosting providers are good and which ones are not.. there are so many promos and special offers taht i'm going crazy...i figured some stories of experience might help me wade through the offers to find a good one that i can settle my pop-up-window-free w/t home at..

thanks,

Assuming you're interested in free web hosts then you might want to look at
www.free-webhosts.com/
They've got reviews of more than a thousand hosting companies which you can search for your requirements.

Personally I've had a lot of luck with portland.co.uk
They don't provide any help designing or uploading the site but they do have good support for server side scripting and no adverts.

justin,

thanks for the reply... ideally free is good but i'm willing to pay money to get what i'm looking for.. i'm expecting the future site to offer mp3s, vid clips, photos, and a lending library. i guess that means i need a lot of bandwith? i dunno.. i've been researching, trying to figure out what i need to have such a site.

I'm going to check out the "portland" link right now.. thanks!

I can throw in another web host link to check out Internet Connection in Maryland. I run a couple non-profit websites, and Ive really enjoyed my relationship with IC. If youre willing to pay a reasonable amount for an account you can get 200MB of storage space and unlimited bandwidth. Their tech support is also excellent (they always get back to me within twenty-four hours) and in almost three years my sites have been down only once (briefly when they went to new servers). Id recommend them.

I need to upgrade to increase my memory. I've got a 10G machine with 328kb left free - hence why it keeps crashing methinks ;)

It's my first PC so I had no idea how much memory I'd use in downloading stuff. How much seems reasonable to buy? I've no idea but I don't want to go overboard & get 500G if I'm really unlikely to use anything like that.

About how much memory do you think the W/T videos will take, because I definately want all those!!!! :D :applause :D

By memory do you mean storage space?

If so most hard drives are around 1/Gigabyte (I'm not sure what that is in dollars) Which means that you should be able to get upto around a hundred gigabytes for a reasonable amount which ought to be enough capacity.

Check out a place like AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum before buying. People share all the best sales, coupons, and rebates there to get very low prices on computer hardware and electronics. I got an 80GB disk for $60 this summer using one of their deals when the average price was over twice that. High quality videos range from 10-80MB of disk space so you could store thousands on an 80GB disk.

Thanks darkmagicwillow :) it's an interesting site, there are some really good deals on stuff about. I wouldn't be able to upgrade it myself though, even if it's just a matter of putting the card in the back. I know I'd put it somewhere wrong & break everything :)

I think 80-100GB seems about right, so I'll price up some different places this week.

Thank you both for your help :D

I'll go look on Ezboard tech support forums as well, but...

it tells me that there are Seven people chatting, and has since last night.

But when I go there to Kitten chat, no one is there. Any ideas?
