Takes place day after the alleged break up.
*********************************************
Tara is in their room; some clothes are spread on the bed. She seems to be packing. Buffy enters.
Buffy- Tara?
Tara- I’m just picking up some stuff. I’ll be gone in-
Buffy- No, that’s not- I wanted to talk to you. (off her look) Not about Willow. Well sort of but not really.
Tara- I don’t wa-
Buffy- Tara, hear me out.
Tara- (beat) Ok.
Buffy- Don’t go. I don’t want you to go.
Tara- I can’t stay here. Not while-
Buffy- I was thinking of asking Willow to leave.
Tara- What?!
Buffy- Her parents live a couple of blocks away and- Well, this is your home now. You’re family remember? I mean, where would you go? To Spike’s? Eww. (Tara shakes her head, half smile) But it’s also the magic. I don’t want her around Dawn.
Tara- Willow would never hurt her!
Buffy- I know, I know. But you’re not like her. I see you with Dawn. You take care of her. You’re not just her friend, you’re like another sister to her.
Tara- But I’m not her sister, you are. I won’t stay here to do your job, Buffy. I’m not-
Buffy- That’s not- I don’t understand what is going on here. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to act around them and- Dawn is not the Key anymore and I don’t have to protect her from some hellgod. She’s regular a teenager now and I sucked at being a teenager so how can I help her? And Willow. I think she’s in shock but… She’s- I can’t stand seeing Willow like this. It’s worse than… Tara, she loves you so much.
Willow- (quietly, from the doorframe) I do.
Buffy- Will?!
Willow- I, um, I left my class notes downstairs. I heard voices up here.
Tara- I was just about to leave.
Willow- No, wait. (Tara keeps walking) Please.
Tara stops but doesn’t look at her.
Buffy- I’ll be, uh, somewhere else. (leaves)
Willow- (nervous) Hi. (Tara looks at her, it breaks her heart) Darling-
Tara- Don’t.
Willow- Tara… (Tara sits on the bed, head hung low) How can I fix this?
Tara- There’s nothing to fix.
Willow- Baby-
Tara- Stop. Don’t do this, Willow.
Willow- Do what? Love you? I won’t stop. I can’t. You’re my soulmate. (Tara scoffs, this upsets her) How could you?
Tara- What?
Willow- You don’t believe me do you?
Tara- Honestly, I don’t know what to believe. After all I remember you telling me once before we started dating Oz was your soulmate and-
Willow- That was different.
Tara- How?
Willow- I don’t want to talk about Oz.
Tara- And I don’t want to talk about anything. (gets up, Willow grabs her arm) Let go. (Willow does but pulls her into a hug, crying)
Willow- I love you.
Tara- (not hugging her back, tearing up, softly) Please…
Willow- (pulls back) Don’t you love me?
Tara- (crying) More than my own existence. But I cant live like this.
Willow- You don’t trust me.
Tara- We’ve- We’ve talked about this.
Willow- Not really, you were brainsucked by a hell god. I mean… Tara, I promise I will never use majick again. Well, unless we’re on patrol, or-
Tara- No, Willow.
Willow- (getting upset) At least I’m trying here, Tara. You’re not making this easy for me.
Tara- It’s not always about you, Willow. I don’t want to talk about this.
Willow- We’re finishing this conversation now.
Tara- (beat, hurt) Done. (walks out)
Willow- (realizes what that means) No. NO! Tara, you can’t.
Willow sits on the bed and begins to cry again. Tara walks down the stairs and clutches her chest; she sits on the steps crying. Buffy’s in the family room and walks over to her. She wraps her arms around her and tries to comfort her.
Later. Dawn and Buffy are sitting at the table. Buffy is looking over bills and Dawn is doing homework.
Dawn- (closes the book) I can’t do this.
Buffy- Math isn’t that hard. Look at me. I’m balancing a checkbook.
Dawn- I mean not hearing them. It’s odd. Willow’s voice, Tara’s laughter- this house, it’s all empty.
Buffy- Geez, thanks.
Dawn- Is it wrong for me to love Willow and Tara together?
Buffy- No. But it’s ok for you to love them individually too.
Dawn- I do, but-
Willow enters.
Willow- (obviously looks like she’s been crying for hours) Hey.
Buffy- Hi.
Dawn- Hey.
Willow- Are there any leftovers?
Buffy- In the fridge.
Willow- Thanks. (exits)
Dawn- She looks like she just jumped off a- um…
Buffy- (pensive) Did I look like that?
Dawn- What?
Buffy- When you found me, dead, how did I look?
Dawn- Beautiful. Like you were sleeping. Not a mark on you.
Buffy- Really?
Willow enters with leftovers.
Willow- (sitting down) What’s going on?
Dawn- Homework.
Buffy- Bills.
Willow- (sadly) Fun.
At Xander and Anya’s. Tara is being set up on the couch.
Anya- Anything else?
Tara- I’m fine.
Xander- Ring if you need anything.
Anya- Ring what?
Xander- It’s a figure of speech, Ahn.
Anya- A figure of speech from where? What would you ring? We have no ringing devices. No bells, no-
Xander- Goodnight, Tara.
Tara- Bye.
She starts to cry again. A little later on Anya and Xander are in bed.
Anya- (whispering) She’s still crying.
Xander- Leave her alone.
Anya- But I’m not doing anything.
Xander- She just needs to let it out.
Anya- She’s been letting it out for an hour and a half. I have a shop to open in the morning and you-
Xander- (realizes something) Shh…
Anya- What?
Xander- She stopped.
Anya- Huh?
Xander- Listen. (they do, no sounds) She must have finally fallen asleep.
They hear a door close.
Anya- Yes, that or she decided to leave.
Xander- (jumps out of bed) No!
Anya- Where are you going?
Xander- To get her.
Anya- Why? It’s obvious she wants to be alone.
Xander- It’s dangerous out there.
Anya- She’s a witch. She knows how to take care of herself. You’re just a human being.
Xander- So is she. I’m going to find her.
Tara is walking alone. A demon comes walking up behind her. Without even acknowledging its presence she raises her right hand behind her and a ball of light strikes the demon. Xander runs up.
Xander- Human being requesting permission to approach.
Tara- (looks at him and starts to cry) I can’t stand crying anymore. I feel dried up but the tears still come.
Xander- Tara.
Tara- I don’t know what to do.
Xander- Well, maybe… Look, it’s Willow. She says and does things sometimes and- But she’s still Willow. She’s in there and she’ll figure it out soon enough. It’s like PMS. Post majick, um, stoppage?
Tara- (chuckles and wipes her tears, takes a deep breath) I never told her about the spell.
Xander- What spell?
Tara- The one she used to… the one with Glory.
Xander- What about it?
Tara- I… Glory…
Xander- (beat, gets it, shocked) No, Tara. No. Are you saying she transferred some of Glory’s memories to you?
Tara- It’s awful. I see them when I sleep. All of them Years and years of pain. All tortured and dead. I even think her thoughts sometimes. It’s getting better. But I don’t- I can’t use more majick to fix it. Majick cannot be used for selfish purposes. She knows that.
Xander- But I’m sure there are exceptions.
Tara- No, there aren’t.
Xander- (beat) Then why did you let her bring Buffy back?
Tara- I wasn’t the only one, Xander.
Two vamps come up from behind.
Vamp- Two love birds having a fight?
Xander- Excuse me. We’re in the middle of a conversation here.
Vamp2- What? She didn’t put out tonight?
Xander- Hey! That is my best friends’ girlfriend you are talking about!
Vamp1 attacks Xander, Vamp2 grabs Tara, holds her from behind all seductively.
Xander- Tara!
Tara- (to Vamp2, pulling her hair aside) Please don’t.
Vamp2- (licks her cheek) Maybe I’ll turn you around to my way of thinking.
Vamp2 turns to dust. Buffy is standing behind him with a stake.
Buffy- I really, really doubt it, dude.
Tara- (thankful) Buffy.
Buffy- Guys, always thinking they’re the gods gift to women.
Xander- (still fighting with vamp1) A little help here would be nice.
Buffy fights with vamp 1 and poofs him.
Xander- (getting up from the floor) Thanks.
Buffy- Sure. I’m here to help.
Xander- How did you- Uh, where’s Tara?
Tara is off and running. Doesn’t know where, doesn’t really care. But somehow she ends up at Buffy’s. She sees the light in her old room is out. She runs in and upstairs. She enters the room startling Willow awake.
Willow- Buffy? (realizes) Tara!
Tara- (standing back) I love you.
Willow- Oh god I love you too but what’s wrong? Tara? Come here. (reaches out her hands to her)
Tara- (sits on the bed instead) I have to tell you something.
Willow- (hurt) What baby?
Back outside.
Xander- What is going on with her? I’ve never-
Buffy- Tara’s-
Xander- I’m talking about Willow. I’m ready to get all man-witched on her.
Buffy- Xander.
Xander- She’s hurting all of us, Buffy. Especially Tara. Tara would never-
Buffy- Really? Hate to bring this up but what about that, “let’s not let the Scoobs see any demons” spell she did.
Xander- That was different. Tara learned her lesson.
Buffy- And Willow needs to learn hers.
Xander- I’m just afraid how she’ll learn it. Who she’ll learn it from.
Buffy- What do you mean?
Xander- Anya said that there are things out there that- Something about a fold rule.
Buffy- Three folds. It’ll come back three folds.
Xander- These things don’t just punish the spellcaster, Buffy. They punish that whom they love the most as well.
Buffy- Tara.
Back in the Summers house. Willow is now crying and Tara is still sitting on the corner of the bed.
Willow- You can’t.
Tara- I have to.
Willow- But we’re your family now, Tara. You can’t just leave us. You can’t leave me.
Tara- If I don’t leave-
Willow- Tara, I’ll die without you.
Tara- No you wont, but I will.
Willow- (doesn’t understand) What?
Tara- (quietly) I saw it. Tonight with the vampire.
Willow- Vampire?! When? Where? How!?
Tara- I didn’t fight back. I didn’t- I didn’t care anymore. And I care so much about you and Dawn and Buffy and all of you. But at that moment- I gave up, Willow. I don’t want to fight, I don’t want to hurt and I don’t want to live like this anymore.
Willow- (tearing) And you think going back to your father will fix everything.
Tara- At least I wasn’t chased around by monsters and my girlfriend wasn’t casting spells on me.
Willow- Girlfriend? Is that why you’re going back?
Tara- I- No!
Willow- Then why did you say that?
Tara- I d-didn’t mean it like that.
Willow- You’re stuttering.
Tara- (moving further back from Willow) You’re scaring me.
Willow- You’re lying.
Tara- (scared) Your eyes are b-black.
Tara falls off the corner of the bed to the floor.
Willow- (reaches out to grab her) Tara!
By accident a bolt of lightning spurts out into the wall. Buffy rushes in and sees Tara on the floor.
Buffy- Willow!
Buffy tackles Willow and a huge burst of energy explodes from the witch.
Willow- What are you doing?
Buffy- Me? What are you doing?! Are you crazy?
Willow- Buffy.
Tara- (getting up) I fell. I just fell.
Willow- (to Buffy, who’s pinning her down) Get off me!
Buffy- (to Tara) Are you all right?
Tara- Yes. I fell off the bed.
Willow- (struggling to get free) I didn’t do anything.
Buffy- Your nose is bleeding.
Willow- You jumped me.
Buffy- It’s from the majick.
Dawn rushes in.
Dawn- What’s- (sees Buffy on Willow) Uh. (sees Tara crying) Buffy?
Buffy- Get out, Dawn.
Dawn- But-
Buffy- Out!
Dawn slams the door behind her.
Tara- I-I…
Buffy- (to Willow) Turn your eyes back to normal.
Willow- They’re fine. I am normal.
Buffy- Turn them back, Willow!
Willow- I don’t know how. It just happens. I can’t help it.
Buffy- I’m not getting off you until- That sounds kinda-
Tara- Buffy?
Buffy- (turns her head to her) Yeah?
Tara- Does your offer still stand?
Willow- What offer? You’re gonna go date her now?
Buffy- (to Willow, fed up) I’m going to knock you unconscious and it won’t be pretty.
Willow- Oh just you try it!
Tara- Stop it both of you! (both do, beat) I will stay here. In S-Sunnydale. (to Willow) But w-we’re through. I’m s-sorry.
Tara walks out and Willow starts to cry. Buffy tries to comfort her. Dawn is in the hallway. She hugs Tara and Tara breaks down crying as well.
