Title: Changing your goals

Author: Cyteach

Rating: PG-13 for now, NC 17 eventually

Pairing: W/T (soon!)

Spoilers: None, completely AU

Feedback: Please!

Summary: Tara is leaving her comfortable life to pursue her life's goals. Before she leaves to do so, she meets Willow Rosenberg. What will happen when the women's paths intersect?

Notes: I've been lurking on the board for about a year since I first discovered it. This is my first attempt at a fic, and I hope it doesn't desperately suck! If it does, just tell me... I can take it!

Chapter 1: The Break-up

The huddled women sat closely together over the remnants of an Italian dinner. As the harried waitress came to clear the finished meal, she winced inwardly over the clearly anguished conversation she heard snippets of.

"No! We can work on this, Tara. I refuse to leave it like this. I can't live my life without you, baby," the dark haired woman pleaded. She was frantically twisting the burgundy cloth napkin in her desperation.

"We've been through this, Lana, I can't take it anymore. I'm t-taking my life back. I'm following my dreams. And to do that, I have to leave my comfort zone. We're both festering here. You don't love me... We're both just afraid to go out there in that big scary world and LIVE." Tara sighed as tears slowly rolled down her partner's bronzed cheeks.

"Don't cry. Just please, take a step back and think. When's the last time you felt those flittering feelings in your tummy when I've walked into a room? When have you felt like you couldn't breathe if you didn't touch my skin? It's been a while, Lana, admit it to yourself." Tara gently wiped the tears from her lover's face.

The women came together in a heated passionate relationship in their third year of college. Since that igniting spark six years before, they had built a life together--albeit one of convenience over the past two years.

Tara couldn't remember how to live without the security blanket that was Lana. She didn't want complacency or to settle for a safe love anymore. And she had loved Lana. A long time ago now, it seemed. They fit well together-- Tara with her quiet, undemanding nature, and Lana with her self-confident theatrical personality. Tara knew that part of Lana's demeanour was showing itself now with the tears and her pleading. Tara knew Lana would come to see the logical nature of her decision in the morning.

Oblivious to the mixed stares of the restaurants other patrons, Tara gently took Lana's larger hand within the warmth of her own tapered ones. "Look at it this way, sweetie, now you can finally go after Michelle Rodriguez and fulfill you're sexual fantasies," Tara joked with a lop-sided grin in an attempt to alleviate the tension radiating from Lana.

"Tara! How can you sit there so calmly as you end our relationship? What about the house? The cats? Our things?! Baby, this is just silly. Look, I know you want to focus on your novel, but we can work this out. I'll just take on some extra clients at the firm and you can take a sabbatical from the school. This is just a case of a mid-mid life crisis. I know our thirties are looming and getting older scares the shit out of you, but you can't leave me!" Lana desperately pleaded, gripping Tara's hands and bringing them to her lips. She began kissing Tara's hand, moving slowly over the outside to place loving pecks on the inside of her wrist.

Slowly, Tara pulled her hand away and rested it in her lap. She began to fiddle with the package she brought with her to the restaurant. This was a decision Tara had been struggling with for the better part of six months, she was not leaving Lana on a whimsical disillusionment. After all, she was a teacher, seeing something from all angles and dissecting information so that her students could take it in was something she had spent her adult life working on.

"Lana, I've thought this through. I think it is the best thing for the both of us. We're smothering each other and I can't stand to think that I am responsible for extinguishing that light in your eyes that made fall so desperately in love with you." Tara placed the thick folder on the table between them and slowly pushed it toward the over-wrought woman.

A part of her felt sinister for handling things out in the open of one of their favorite restaurants, but if Tara had learned anything from the past six years by Lana's side was that the woman had a flair for dramatic displays. Here, surrounded by mutual acquaintances and clients, Tara felt they could both deal with the inevitable situation in a sensible manner without breaking dishes or throwing vases. It was the safest for everyone's well-being.

"Tara? What is this?" Lana whispered, afraid to look inside.

"It's the deed to the house and a draft of potential divisions of our assets. You can have the house. I've made up my mind about this, so don't argue," Tara held up her hand toward Lana as she was on the verge of protesting.

"I'm not staying in Chicago," Tara admitted. "You keep the house. If it's too much, sell it and start over at another place. But I want you to have it. As for the cats, you keep them for now until I settle down. Then, if you agree, I'll send for Ginger when I settle down. Right now, I don't even know where I'm going so I will be leaving almost everything behind," Tara added in what she hoped was a calm, diplomatic manner.

Lana slowly flipped through the well-detailed documents in a haze. Her lawyer's mind noted the clarity and detailed nature of the impersonal pages before her. "Tara...How--what? Lana stuttered while pushing her ebony locks back from her shocked face. "Where did you get these? Is this what our life together boils down to? Fifteen pages of type-written legalese?!" Lana's mouthed silently opened and closed in disbelief. "I can't believe you! You, you heartless, cold bitch! Why are you doing this? Here of all places?" she whispered furiously from her seat across the table. The lone candle that cast such an intimate glow on their dinner earlier in the evening slowly flickered its last flame and silently extinguished, leaving the two women in shadows.

Tara, knowing the woman she lived with for the past five years well, had been expecting a reaction like this one from Lana. "Look, Lana, I know this seems callous to you now but it's for the best for both of us." Tara sighed. "I'm going. There's nothing to argue about. And you can sit there and throw insults at me until they call the police to drag us both out of here, but, after six years together I don't want to leave here and never see or speak to you again. You're my best friend, Lana. Don't you see? I'll always love you, sweetie, how could I not?" Tara shifted her chair closer to Lana. "But we're not in love with each other anymore, Lan, and one of these days you or I will come home to find the other has up and left without a word. I don't want that. I refuse to let that happen. You'll always be a huge part of my life. But now is the time to close this chapter of our lives and move on to something bigger and better."

Tara lovingly smoothed back Lana's hair from her face and cupped her still damp check. Moving her thumb in slow circles, Tara leaned in and placed a soft kiss on Lana's full lips. "Read over the papers, Lana," Tara said as she gracefully rose from her seat, placing her napkin on the table top.

"I'm staying with Buffy tonight to give you some space. Call me tomorrow when you are ready to discuss the options," Tara said as she walked backwards toward the bar to pay the bill. "Sleep on it, sweetie, and you'll see that this is the best thing for us." Tara finally turned and made her way to pay and glanced over her shoulder one last time before dropping her head lowly and exiting the restaurant into the dark autumn night.

Their waitress from earlier discretely made her way over to Lana with a supply of Kleenex from her staff locker. "Here, hon, dry those pretty eyes of yours," she intoned while placing the box on the now empty table and gliding away to wait on her other tables.

The quietly beautiful woman with the big sad blue eyes left a generous tip--paying for their meal twice over to ensure that tall slim woman with the caramel skin and tear-stained doe eyes could stay at the table until she was ready to leave. Normally Carmen's heartless manager would see to it that the patron's were hurriedly whisked out of the restaurant after paying, bur Carmen would gladly see to it that she could see stay as long as she needed--even if it meant giving up her own tips and ordering more food for the woman so the manager would not catch on to the situation.

Carmen didn't know why, but she saw something of a kindred spirit in the desolate woman that Friday night in October sitting at one of her tables.

As Tara aimlessly shuffled her way down the busy city street, being jostled by groups of people as they made their way past her on the cracked sidewalk, she finally let the tears slide soundlessly down her cold cheeks as the wind tore through the thin overcoat she wore. She resolutely wiped the tears away as they reached her quivering chin and pulled her coat closer to her trembling body. Looking up at the waving street signs through her tear-clouded vision, she flagged down a cab and made her way to Buffy's house.

Tara paid the fare to her driver as he pulled up to a faded brownstone house on a quiet street. She thanked him quietly and made her way in a daze to her friend's door. Buffy, knowing of Tara's plan for that evening hurriedly opened up the front door and quickly enveloped her friend in a squeezing embrace.

"Oh, Tara," Buffy hushed as she pulled the sobbing woman inside. "Sssh, honey, it's okay, let it all out, Buffy's got you now."

The door closed on the women as Buffy huddled the shaking woman to the couch and placed a blanket gently around her. "Let's get you out of those clothes and into something comfy. I've got your bag in the spare room. Do you want me to help you change?" Buffy asked quietly ask the tremors wracking Tara's body slowly subsided.

"No, I'll be alright," Tara answered slowly. "I need a minute alone to process. I'll be back shortly," she replied ask she gingerly rose from the confines of Buffy's leather couch and made her way down the dim hallway to the spare bedroom where she left her things earlier that day.

As Tara robotically removed her coat and slipped her knee-length brown boots from her feet, she took in her appearance in the gilded floor length mirror opposite her. Tara's honey colored hair hung limply at her chin--a casualty to the swift and unforgiving Chicago wind. Her floral printed dress still clung to the curves of her womanly hips and chest-- unfazed by the night's developments. She slowly lowered the zipper of the dress and let it glide soundlessly to the floor in a heap. She stood rooted to the spot, unable to command her aching body to retrieve her pyjamas from her overnight bag lying on the floor near the discarded dress.

In an eccentrically designed apartment in downtown Manhattan, Dr. Willow Rosenberg sat at the mahogany desk in her home office surrounded by papers. She flipped through the documents with her trusty collection of different colored pens at the ready to make the necessary notations on her itinerary. Willow was a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Columbia and, in addition to her teaching duties, she made yearly trips to various locations around the globe to participate in field work and compile research.

"Hmmm... If I switch my flight plan out of New York to include a two-day stopover in Chicago, I'll be able to surprise Buffy for her birthday before heading to London," Willow mumbled to herself as she rearranged her schedule.

Willow's childhood friend had relocated to Chicago after completing her degree in teaching from their hometown of Sunnydale, California. Willow and Buffy--inseparable since childhood drifted slowly away from one another as their careers took them to different parts of the country.

"This is just what we need," Willow glowed to herself in appreciation of her clandestine plans. She plugged her impromptu trip into her planner as she booted up her the laptop on her desk and smiled to herself in anticipation of the reunion to come.

Thanks, everyone, for your encouragement. As promised, here is the next chapter...

Chapter 2: The Fall

"Tara? Honey, are you okay in there?" Buffy asked quietly from the closed door.

"I thought maybe you'd like some hot tea-- I have chamomile," Buffy continued as she waited patiently for the door to open.

When she didn't get a response Buffy gently eased the bedroom door open and peeked around the slight opening to check on Tara. She found the exhausted girl lying on top of the covers in only her bra and slip, clearly asleep from the steady breathing coming from her.

Buffy eased into the room and onto the bed beside the sleeping Tara. She gently brushed her hair away from her face and placed a tender kiss on her cheek.

"Oh, Tara, what have you gotten yourself into?" she murmured as she picked up the quilt from the bottom of the bed to drape over her friend's sleeping form.

"Sweet dreams, honey. I'll be here for you in the morning," Buffy quietly said as she eased from the door leaving it opened a crack so that she could hear if Tara awoke later in the night and needed her.

Buffy retreated to her bedroom and quickly changed into a tank top and stripped out of her pants. Even with the cool autumn night blowing through her open window, Buffy enjoyed slipping into the cold sheets and cocooning herself under the covers.

As sleep neared, Buffy thought of the coming days and of steeling herself to help Tara through this awful ordeal--even if it meant skipping her birthday this year.

*********

As Willow hurried through the airport trailing her carry-on bag behind her, she quickly stole a glance at her wrist to see that her plane was due to depart in ten minutes.

"Stupid! Stupid faulty alarm clock. I'm going to write a very well-drafted complaint to that company as soon as I get the chance! Come on, Rosenberg, pick up the pace. You are not letting this ruin your surprise visit to Buffy," Willow chanted to herself as she jogged down the hall.

"There! I made it! Whew! Way to go, Rosenberg!" She cheered ad she handed the flight attendant her ID and boarding pass.

As she walked down the ramp toward the plane, Willow thought of how surprised Buffy was going to be to see her.

*********

Tara slowly clawed her way to consciousness as the wafting smell of pancakes drifted into her room. She automatically stretched her hands across the bed searching for Lana's body. As her head cleared, Tara's hand snatched back and the events of the night before came rushing back to her. She whimpered quietly and buried her face into the pillow, not wanting to face the day.

With a resolute grunt, Tara flipped off her blankets in a move a much like one tears off a band aid. She looked down are her near naked body and winced internally at the realization that Buffy must have covered her last night. Tara's cheeks reddened in embarrassment as she pulled her robe tightly around her body and crept down the hall towards the bathroom.

Buffy valiantly puttered around the kitchen trying not to burn the breakfast she was making for Tara knowing that the coming day was going to be a tumultuous one.
Cooking wasn’t her greatest asset, but she plowed onward scrambling eggs to compliment the pancakes. Just as she was removing the last of the food from the griddle, Buffy heard Tara enter the bathroom.

"Great timing," Buffy thought to herself setting the freshly brewed coffee in a carafe on the table.

Just as Tara exited the bathroom, Willow pulled up to Buffy's brownstone toting her carry-on bag and an armful of flowers she stopped to pick up on her way from the airport. Shifting her packages, she reached for the door's bell and rang.

Buffy and Tara, both surprised by the early morning visitor, stopped in their tracks wondering who was calling.

"I'll get it," Tara replied to Buffy's quizzical look. "It's probably Lana, I told her I was staying here last night. Brace yourself," Tara warned with a determined look settling on her face before reaching for the handle of the handle of the door.

Taking a deep cleansing breath and clearing her face of any telltale signs of the emotional night she had, Tara swung open the door saying, "it's a little early to be starting this now, don't you think?"

Willow stepped back from the half-dressed blond goddess standing in the open doorway and checked the address in the planner she was holding in her already full hands.

"Uhh, ummm...You're..." Willow stuttered as she was lost in the beauty of the woman standing before her. "I'm sorry, I think I may have the wrong address," she sheepishly admitted. "I'm looking for my friend, Buffy Summers. She must have given me the wrong house number, I'll just be going. Sorry again," she mumbled, backing slowly down the house's stoop.

The flowers in her hand tangled with the handle of her bag and Willow vainly attempted to stop her catastrophic fall backwards down the concrete steps. Tara reached out to the slim redhead but the force of gravity was too quick to stop her tumble.

"Ahhh!" Willow screamed, flailing her arms like a traffic cop in an attempt to regain her balance.

"Shit!" Tara yelled as Willow went down in a heap of luggage and flowers and came to rest at the foot of the stairs in an unconscious tangle.

"Buffy! Quick!" Tara yelled over her shoulder as she scrambled down the stairs toward the fallen woman.

Buffy, having already heard the commotion and on her way to the door to provide Tara with moral support, saw a red haired woman lying at an awkward angle at the bottom of her steps with Tara standing over her.

"Oh my god, Tara! What happened?!" Buffy asked as she ran to the fallen woman.

"I-I don't know, Buffy. I thought it was Lana so I answered the door, and this woman was looking for you. She thought she had the wrong address and turned to leave, but..." Tara trailed off as Buffy reached the woman on the ground.

Buffy moved aside the red locks of the woman on the ground and tenuously checked her neck for a pulse. Breathing a sigh of relief, Buffy whispered, "thank god," as her rapid heartbeat slowed to normal.

It wasn't until the danger to the fallen woman had faded that Buffy took a closer look, "Willow?! Willow Rosenberg? She cried incredulously.

Just then, Willow found the blackness surrounding her slowly fade as the early morning sun shined down on her exposed face. The pounding in her head suggested she had partaken in mighty bender the night before, but that couldn't be right, she had something important to do that day...

"Buffy?" Willow croaked as her eyes blinked open. "What happened? Where am I? And why am I lying on the ground?"

Tara steeped into Willow's line of sight and gently crouched behind the woman to get her in a sitting position. "You fell, sweetie. How are you feeling?"

"Umm, ok I think. Except for those bells ringing in my head. Not to sound ungrateful or anything, but, who are you and why are wearing a robe out in the middle of the street? Not that I mind the view, but..." Willow trailed off sheepishly as a blush reddened her cheeks.

"Oh, I-I-I answered the door and then you--and I ran... Um, I'll just go put some clothes on now. Excuse me," Tara prattled as she ran back into the house.

"Jeez, Will, you sure know how to make a girl run-- and how to make a grand entrance too, now that I think of it," Buffy babbled to herself as she helped Willow to her feet.

"You sure you're ok? Can you walk? Buffy asked worriedly.

"I'm fine Buffy, honestly," Willow said as she straightened her clothes. "I can't say the same for your poor flowers, though," Willow sighed as she looked at the bunch if trampled flowers on the ground where she has been lying. "Happy birthday," she winced with a half smirk on her face.

"Willow! Not the time to be worrying about flowers. We need to check on that noggin' of yours to make sure none of your massive brain has leaked out of your ears and onto my stoop," Buffy chagrined lovingly.

Buffy ushered Willow into the house and led he'd over to the couch before searching for injuries. "How many fingers am I holding up," Buffy asked seriously as she held up four digits in front of Willow's face.

"Buffy, I'm fine. Look, you have the square root of 16 up. See! Brain's still working!" Willow claimed proudly as Buffy grabbed her into a tight hug.

"God, Willow, it is great to see you! What are you doing here?" Buffy asked in the same breath.

"Can't a girl surprise her best friend on her birthday?" Willow smirked. "And I'll be asking the questions here, miss-I got-a-barely-dressed-hot-mama-in-my house-on-a-Saturday-morning," Willow teased.

The girls had both come out to each other in freshman year of high school. After a very brief and embarrassing stint as girlfriends, the two decided to forget that part of their history.

"Huh?" Buffy replied to Willow's teasing banter. "Who? Hot mama? What the hell, Rosenberg! You ARE hurt. I knew I should've called an ambulance before moving you!" Buffy fretted as she ran to the phone.

"Wait! Buffy, I'm fine!" Willow explained as she grabbed Buffy's hand away from the phone. "If you don't want to tell me about her, I'll just leave so you guys can have some privacy. Just call me when you're free," Willow stated, stung by the reaction of her friend.

"I'm only in town until Monday, though, and I would really like to spend a little quality friend time with before I head overseas," Willow added before reaching for her bag.

This story has all the earmarks of adorably cute written all over it.
It does make things easier for them to meet if Fate has allowed Buffy and Tara to become friends when childhood friend Willow re-enters her life.
Nothing says I love you, Buffy's hot friend, like falling down a flight of stairs and having this mystery blond hover over her with her robe open.
I can deny chicks in chainmail nothing.

Nice story.
I read the first chapter and forgot to leave feedback... shame on me.
It was a little weird to see Tara with someone else, but fortunatelly she was breaking up with Lana, so, there's nothing to complain about.
And I loved how Willow and Tara met each other. I love when there's this strange situations, just like the one you wrote.
Well, I'll keep reading.

Thanks again for the feedback!

I've been thinking about writing a fic here for awhile, and while I love Willow/Tara :wtkiss as much as the next one (and believe me, there will be plenty in the future!), I wanted the story to start off slow... with some conflicting issues thrown in there so our favorite girls had to fight for each other.

I'm posting the next chapter now--not to worry, things get sorted out with Willow, Buffy and Tara's misconceptions :peace

Enjoy!

Chapter 3: Revelations

******

Tara slowly dressed as she heard low voices coming from the living room. Buffy had never mentioned this Willow woman to her before but then again, Tara and Lana's problems tended to monopolize their conversations of late.

Tara winced slightly as the thoughts of the night before--temporarily forgotten in the madness of the morning--came rushing back.

With a new resolve, Tara tightened the belt on her jeans and smoothed down the blue tank top that she wore under her shirt and braced herself for the encounter with the red-haired woman who seemed to have an odd effect on her.

*********

"Will! Willow, wait!" Buffy rushed to the door before Willow could leave. "Where do you think you're going? Give me a second to think, damn it!" Buffy pleaded as she ran her fingers through her hair.

"It's not what you think," Buffy said in a frustrated tone. "Tara's just a friend," she tapered off as Tara re-entered the room.

"Um, sorry for interrupting, but, ah, I'm just going to get my things and take off. Thanks for letting me crash, Buffy," Tara said with her hair covering her face.

"Nothing happened, I swear," Tara added to Willow as she reached for the doorknob.

"Whoa, whoa, WHOA!" Buffy yelled as things became more and more jumbled in her mind as she regretted not having coffee before Tara awoke.

"You!" she said pointing at Tara, “sit your ass back down; you have nowhere to go right now, remember? And you, little miss show-up-and-take-off, explain what's going on here," Buffy finished as she slumped into a chair.

Tara slumped sheepishly onto the couch as her cheeks reddened in embarrassment. "Sorry, I just thought that I was causing unneeded trouble with you and your girlfriend by being here. I'm Tara, Buffy's co-worker at the high school," Tara said offering a hand to Willow to shake.

Buffy, previously pacing the floor of her living room trying to put the pieces of the confusing morning together suddenly stopped in het tracks as Tara's words finally registered in her mind.

"Girlfriend?! Where? Who..." she trailed off as she whipped her head comically back and forth between Willow and Tara.

"You think Will's my girlfriend?" she asked Tara incredulously. "And you think Tara's my lover?" she pointed her question at Willow.

"Ahh, umm, well--" both Willow and Tara trailed off together.

Buffy's manic laughter filled the space of her living room as the other women looked on, thinking their friend finally crossed the line into loony territory.

"Umm, Buffy, are you okay?" Willow ventured her concern showing in the tone of her voice.

"You think... And you... Us?" Buffy's laughter finally getting the best of her as she collapsed onto the couch holding her stomach.

"Oh, this is TOO funny! Stop, I can't take anymore!" she scoffed as her laughter finally subsided into breathless pants.

"Man, I'm glad you both see me as this grand womanizer, but you're both WAY off here," Buffy began.

"For one, Tara, this is my best friend since childhood, Willow Rosenberg," Buffy explained to the confused woman.

"And Willow, this is Tara Maclay. She stayed the night because she's going through some things at home," Buffy continued, not wanting to overstep her boundaries with Tara's personal life.

"Buffy, it's okay," Tara responded quietly. "I'm in the process of breaking up with my partner, Lana," she explained to Willow. "Buffy's been my support through this, but I won't bore you with the details," Tara finished.

Willow had become mesmerized by the lilting voice of the beautiful brunette before her and spoke without filtering her thoughts. "Oh, I could never be bored listening to you," she said honestly, hanging onto Tara's every word.

"U-umm, okay?" Tara replied in confusion.

"So Willow," Buffy began, steering the conversation away from any awkwardness, "what brings you to the windy city?" Buffy enquired. "Not that I'm not glad to see you," she added.

"It's your birthday, Buffy! Did you think I forgot?" Willow explained.

"It's your birthday?" Tara questioned. "I'm so sorry, Buffy, I didn't know. I wouldn't have crashed on you like this if I'd had known. And I didn't even get you anything," Tara continued.

"Hey, that's what friends are for, right? It's just a birthday. I have one every year. And come to think of it, something weird always happens on it," Buffy added.

"I just don't want to put you out,” Tara insisted as she stood from the couch. "And now you have a friend visiting. I'll just grab my things and head home. Time to face the music, I guess," Tara finished with a resigned sigh, dreading the upcoming confrontation.

"Tara..." Buffy tried to stop the retreating woman. "You really don't have to leave. What about Lana? You're plans?"

"I can deal with Lana. I have been for six years. I just need to get this over with so I can move on," Tara replied as she put on her coat and opened the door.

"It was really nice to meet you, Willow. And sorry for the confusion earlier. And-and for the fall and lack of clothes..." Tara trailed off before she could embarrass herself more.

"Hey, no biggie," Willow replied with a grin. "It was great to meet you, too."

Buffy followed Tara to the door. "You sure you'll be okay, Tare?" Buffy asked with concern.

"Don't worry, Buffy. I'll call you later if it makes you feel better, okay?" Tara said as she stepped outside.

"Yes, please call. If you don't, I'll worry," Buffy said as she hugged the taller woman. "Take care of yourself, you hear?"

"I will. Promise," Tara said returning the hug.

*********

"Well," Willow said rising from her chair. "This wasn't exactly how I pictured my visit beginning," Willow joked rubbing her head.

"How's the head, Willow?" Buffy asked with concern.

"Oh, the head's fine," Buffy, Willow assured her. "It's my heart that's the problem," Willow wailed.

"Huh? Will, did you hurt your heart when you fell," Buffy questioned naively.

"I think I'm in love, Buff," Willow crooned dreamily.

"Whoa, Willow, that's great!" Buffy beamed. "So you finally met someone in New York?" Buffy asked eagerly.

"Uh-uh, not exactly, Buffy. I was kinda talking about the goddess who just left your house. Tara?" Willow admitted.

"Huh? Who?" Buffy asked. "Tara? Tara, Tara?!?" Buffy asked in horror. "Will, no. No you can't. She's, she's in transition, way off limits. You can't," Buffy repeated shaking her head.

"But Buffy, have you SEEN her? Talked to her? Had her hold you while regaining consciousness after a bad fall?" Willow babbled.

"Oh, no, Willow, this can't be happening. I don't want you to get hurt, but Tara...She's going through some things and she is... She's leaving her partner and her job and starting over..." Buffy tried to explain the situation to her friend but saw her efforts were futile. When Willow got that look in her eyes, there was no talking to her.

Buffy gulped and wrapped an arm around her friend. "Don't say I didn't warn you, Will," Buffy said as she thought of the heartbreak in store for her best friend.

*********

On the other side of the city, Tara slowly climbed the stairs to her home. "No, not mine anymore," Tara admonished to herself as she quietly knocked on the door.

She heard footsteps approaching and steeled herself for whatever Lana could throw at her--literally.

"Hi," Tara said as the door opened. "Do you mind if I come in?"

"Tara, this is your home, of course you can come in," Lana replied as she stepped back to allow Tara entrance.

"No, Lan, it's your house now. Or it will be as soon as you sign those papers. Did you have a chance to take a look at them?" Tara asked.

"You're not going to change your mind, are you?" Lana whispered taking a seat at the kitchen island and fiddling with her coffee mug.

"No, sweetie, I'm not," Tara said as she sat down next to Lana.

"I've looked over the papers," Lana sighed as she got down a mug for Tara. "I think you need to rethink leaving everything to me. We got these things together and I just can't take everything and leave you with nothing," Lana argued as she sat back down.

"I am going on the road. Not staying in any place for any amount of time," Tara explained. "I still have all of Mama's inheritance and I'll be ok. Maybe when I settle down somewhere I'll come and get a few things, but for right now I want to travel light," Tara explained.

"I'm not doing this to be a martyr, Lana. You can't look at it like that, sweetie," she said as she took her hand. "How are you holding up?" Tara questioned tenderly. Despite her decision to end things with Lana, she stilled loved the woman and spent do much of her life as a part of their relationship.

"I-I'm hanging in there, I guess," She replied.

"Tara, I have to ask you something," Lana hedged quietly, "and I want you to be honest, you at least owe me that."

"Anything," Tara replied honestly.

"Is- is there someone else? Is that why you're leaving? Have you been with someone else?" she asked as tears ran freely down her face. "Because I could look past that, I could, Tara," she cried softly.

"No! No, love, there's no one else, nor has there ever been, I swear to you," Tara answered and ran her hands gently over the other woman's hair.

"I just---" Lana trailed off. "I really don't understand why you're doing this, Tar," Lana said openly. "Why?"

"I just need to find me before it's too late, before I've disappeared forever. There are things I need to do and see and experience and I just can't do then here," Tara said quietly.

"And I know you feel the same way, Lana, if you would just let yourself see it," Tara said.

"It's time," Tara gingerly placed the folder of documents on the table in front of them and pulled a pen out of her bag. "Are you ready?"

Lana sighed as she took the offered pen and held it over the papers like a surgeon ready to make the first cut.

"I love you, Tara Maclay, and if this is what you want, then I can't stop you," Lana sighed as she delicately signed her name to the papers and pushed them to Tara.

Tara gathered the documents, the last remnants of their life together and rose from her seat. "I'm going to pack my things," Tara said quietly. "Thank you," she whispered and wiped her own tears away.

Very funny with them thinking that Buffy is dating the other, and Buffys reaction is brilliant, though good that she told them that she isn't. Looking forward to the next update.

Even when breaking up with the Not-Willow, it is not in Tara's nature to be anything but sympathetic and magnanimous in her caring for the other person.
Good for Buffy for being honest with her two friends as three is not company where Willow and Tara are concerned.

Chapter 4: Truths and more questions

*******

"That was much better than my attempt at breakfast," Buffy said rubbing her tummy as she and Willow exited the cafe.

"So, big spender, where to next?" she questioned the red head next to her.

"Uh-uh, birthday girl, this is your day and your choice," Willow teased.

"Well, I do have tickets for an exhibition game for this afternoon at the Union Center," Buffy admitted. "The WNBA are in town," she gushed.

"Hot girls getting all sweaty?" Willow questioned wryly. "Count me in!"

**********

"Wow, I have a newfound appreciation of the game of basketball," Willow said as they left the Union Center that evening. "I would've gone to PE if the girls had looked like that!"

"Willow Rosenberg, you dog!" Buffy joked as she linked arms with her best friend as they strolled down the street. "I think we need to cool you down, soldier!" Buffy teased.

"It's just with all the jumping and running and..." Willow trailed off as Buffy's phone began singing 'Step by Step' by New Kids on the Block.

"Whoa," Willow laughed as she hears the ringtone. "Let go of the past, Summers!"

"This happens to be a classic," Buffy retorted.

"Hello?" Buffy said flipping her phone open.

"Hi, Buffy, it's Tara," came the voice from the phone.

"How are you, honey?" Buffy asked gently while mouthing "it's Tara" to Willow.

"I'm hanging in there," came the tired reply. "It's been a long day," she admitted.

"I'm on my way to a hotel. I thought it would be easier for me to leave the house right away," she said, "you know, make it as easy as possible for Lana."

"Oh, no, Miss Maclay! There will be no hotel for you, young lady," Buffy retorted. "You're staying with me for as long as you need to."

"Thanks for the offer, Buffy, but you have a guest," Tara pointed out. "I don't want to impose."

"Tara, you're staying, no arguments," Buffy stated in a no nonsense tone reserved for her students.

"Yes, Ms. Summers," Tara replied cheekily as she stifled a laugh. Changing her tone, Tara said, "Don't let me ruin your night, though. I still have a key; I'll just let myself in. You and Willow enjoy yourselves tonight," she insisted.

"Ok, Tar, we will," Buffy replied, a plan forming in her mind. "We'll try not to wake you when we come in," she said, ending the phone call.

"Is everything okay," Willow asked anxiously as Buffy hung up the phone.

"As good as things can be, I guess," Buffy replied.

"I had an idea," Buffy began as the two women continued on their walk and Willow listened intently to her friend's plan.

**********
Tara exited the taxi and struggled with her bags as she walked up the steps of Buffy’s brownstone. Fumbling in her pockets for her key, she cursed silently as snippets of her belongings began to fall to the step.

“Come on!” she groaned to herself just wanting to set her things down and wallow for the night.

Finally Tara found the key, retrieved her fallen things and pushed through the door of the house. Darkness and silence accompanied her as she entered. “Perfect,” she thought.

Bringing everything but her trusty ‘teacher’s bag’ into the room she slept in last night, Tara re-entered the living room in a pair of ragged gray sweatpants and a weathered fitted t-shirt. She plopped down to the couch, flicked the television on, and dragged her bag towards her.

The inevitable realization of what she had done over the past day and a half bombarded Tara and she slumped back against the couch with a ragged moan. She was proud of her ability to actually follow through with her plans of ending it with Lana, but the idea of actually getting her life in order and achieving her dreams loomed frighteningly ahead of her.

“Well, no time like the present,” Tara resolutely said to herself after allowing a few extra minutes of her self-pitying party.

Being a teacher, Tara’s days were usually meticulously planned, ensuring that her students were given the best possible opportunities to excel in her classes. Because of this, Tara was never far from her daily planner and it was this that she first pulled from her well-worn bag.

Flipping through the pages, Tara looked over her schedule for the next few days: appointments at the bank, the school and with her family loomed in the not so distant future. At least she would get to visit with her little sister, she thought to herself, a radiant smile immediately lighting up her face.

With a pen at the ready and a steady determination, Tara planned out her remaining days in Chicago and highlighted her detailed plan for her escape from the city.

When the tedious work was finished, Tara lovingly pulled a battered bound notebook from her bag. It was worn around the spine where it had been opened and closed so many times and the blue cover had faded to a slate-like gray.

Herein lay all of her hopes and dreams.

*************

After ransacking the video store, spending a fortune on comfort food, and placing a delivery order for cheesy pizza goodness at one of Chicago’s finest parlours, a tired but excited Willow and Buffy made their way home.

“Buffy, do you think this stuff is going work?” Willow asked anxiously as they neared their destination. “I-I...I don’t know why, Buffy, but I want to make her happy,” Willow admitted looking down at her feet as they walked under the street lights.

“Will...” Buffy began but stopped herself. This was her bestest friend and she did not want to cause her untold hurt, but felt like she needed to place all of the cards on the table so that she was going into the evening prepared.

“Willow, Tara is... Tara is going through a lot right now, and I think you need to try and understand before you go in there and lay on the Rosenberg charm,” Buffy edged. She stopped abruptly in front of a street bench and plopped down. “Here, sit a minute and let me try and explain.”

“Tara’s from a little town in South Dakota. Before she came out here to go to college, her life was pretty sheltered. Before she left home, she came out to her family and things haven’t exactly been peaches and butterflies since then,” Buffy said starting her tale.

“Um, Buff? Not to stop the flow of your storytelling or anything here, but I think the saying you’re looking for is...never mind, it’s not important, Willow finished quickly seeing the look of frustration on the petite blond’s face.

“Like I was saying... Tara came to Chicago to go to school and she spent the first year or so that she was here hiding in her dorm room. Then, one night at a party on her floor, she met Lana. They hit it off right away and Lana, the sweet talker that she is, immediately swept Tara off of her feet. That was six years ago. Tara’s never been with anyone else,” Buffy stated, looking at Willow’s reaction to see if the red-head was getting the undertone of her story.

“About a year ago, after working with Tara at the high school for a while and getting to know her well, I noticed a change in her. The once vibrant woman slowly began to disappear. She was withdrawn, always scribbling in her notebook, and anytime she thought no one was looking, she would get this painful look on her face. No matter how I tried, I couldn’t pry out what was bothering her,” Buffy continued.

“Months passed and she seemed to be getting better, but then one Friday evening when we were having drinks after a rough week at school, Tara and I were alone in the bathroom. She came out of the stall while I was washing up...” Buffy trailed off as that night came flooding back to her

“Hey, Tare,” Buffy exclaimed cheerily as she saw her friend step out of the bathroom stall. “Ready to get back out there and knock a few more back?” Buffy joked as Tara stepped up beside her at the vanity.

“Buffy,” Tara began, taking a big breath, “do you think we are individuals? I mean we, like each person, not us in particular,” Tara continued as Buffy blankly stared at the overly philosophical question.

“Umm... Not that I am not always up for a great discussion, Tara, but what is this about? Are you okay?” She asked in concern.

“It’s just that...” Tara began and then trailed off. “I always thought I was an individual, Buffy. That’s something that I’ve held onto and it got me through some really tough things. And now all of a sudden my foundation has shaken and I don’t know who or what I am anymore. I-if I don’t have that, then what do I have?” The taller woman broke down in hysterically sobbing at this final declaration.

“Hey... hey there, hon. It’s okay,” Buffy hushed as she took Tara into her arms. “It’s okay,” Buffy continued rocking Tara back and forth, tears coming into her own eyes at her friend’s distress.

“Let’s get out of here, okay? We’ll go back to my place and we can have a junk food and talk fest, we’ll pick up some wine and you can tell Buffy all about it, how does that sound?” Buffy asked as she led Tara out of the bar and into a waiting
taxi.

Buffy’s recollection trailed off as she wondered how much to tell Willow. There were some things that you just couldn’t share—even with your best friend.

“Tara and I shared a lot that night,” Buffy continued looking up at the darkened night sky. “I won’t get into the details, because it is not my part to say, but I will say that you have to tread very lightly with Tara, Willow,” Buffy stated with an undertone of threat in her voice.

“Buffy, trust me,” Willow pleaded as she heard the veiled threat in her best friend’s voice. “There’s something there, Buff, I can feel it. I’ll be careful with her, I promise, ok?” Willow continued seeing the resolve on Buffy’s face.

“Hey, let’s get back to the house before the pizza gets there and Maclay eats all of the cheesy goodness,” Willow said cheerily in an attempt to ease the
underlying tension between the two women.

Buffy rose from the bench and grabbed Willow embracing her in an unexpected hug that had the potential to squeeze the air from the petite red-head’s narrow frame.

“Agh, Buffy!” Willow squeaked as oxygen was becoming an issue. “Need—air—can’t—breathe—“ Willow was faintly able to get out from her position in the blond’s arms.

“Oh! Sorry Will,” Buffy said releasing her. “I forget my own strength sometimes,” she added sheepishly as they continued on their route home.

“Lay off those Wheaties, lady,” Willow smirked as she linked arms with Buffy and turned the corner onto the quiet street with the faded brownstones.

*******
While Buffy was continuing her tale to Willow, Tara was less than a block away safely ensconced in Buffy's house sipping a steaming mug of herbal tea and flipping through her notebook.

Her dreams were simple--to her anyway. Tara wanted nothing more than to be a published author and her life with Lana was preventing that. Intertwining a life with another person surprisingly takes a little more and more of your individualism away daily. It is not as though this is necessarily a bad thing. But when goals and desires are put on the back burner to be replaced by laundry and dishes or dinner parties for people you do not know, then it became an issue—or so Tara belatedly realized.

Just then, the buzzer sounded at Buffy’s front door and startled the contemplative blond.

“Who’s that?” she wondered to herself and she slowly extricated herself from the comfy fortress she had created for herself on the couch and headed to greet the visitor.
