Hey there,
I'm glad to get to read this update. I hope you really are going to update more frequently now. The interaction between Willow and Faith is quite touching. Faith does a good job of speaking honestly and emphatically and Willow of being open to listening to her.

I also enjoyed the Buffy, Xander, Willow conversation. I particularly liked:
After a few more moments of silence, Xander finally spoke up, “Are you gay?”

What Willow felt on being asked that question was indescribable. For starters, she was relieved to hear Xander get past his obvious shock enough to ask a sensible question. On the other hand though, she herself was not sure what she was yet. So again, she answered as honestly as she could, “When it comes to Tara, yes.”
It's an eminently reasonable question and a very good answer. I particularly like that you don't fall back on having his eyes glaze over as he imagines it.

Very well done. I have a specific writing suggestion that I think would improve the power and focus of your writing so if you're interested, PM or e-mail me.

Chapter 77.

Postby Shai » Wed Feb 11, 2009 11:36 am

Howdy! I promised that I would not abandon this fic again, and I am keeping my word, or at least trying to! Here's a short update for now...I have a busy day tomorrow so I couldn't make this one any longer, but I hope it gives you Kittens at least some satisfaction. Sorry about any typos there might be...I don't use a beta, and upload the updates as soon as I'm done writing them. So yeah...

Cheers! Oh, and enjoy!

Zampsa1975 - Soon, soon ;)

LittleBit - Haha! I told her what you said about having been a calming influence, and she was very amused! And yes, next time you see her, give her a hug especially from me! She was actually sick as a dog these past 5 days, and is still on the road to recovery. Now, no, I did not write the update in London. I do them all as oneshots and just post them, so it's really a question of when I have the time and energy to concentrate on this fic :p Well, my update answers your last question, so enjoy! ;)

ophelia11 - I have an update up "soon" ;) That's a start, right? Lol! And hey, it isn't even summer yet! Anyhoo, I see the wife has turned you into a smartass too? :p

writerfreak - Hey Amanda :) Here's the update that you didn't wait for too patiently! I hope you like it.

Sandman78 - I'm so glad you liked the jealousy moment. I think it's something everyone deals with, but whether we allow it to become an issue or not is in our control. I wanted Willow to see sense, while at the same time, I wanted to show her dealing with something that comes naturally.

jasmydae - Hey Megan :) I owe you an email! I'm sorry I disappeared over email...I tend to get lost sometimes :p Well, have you caught up on the story yet? Any comments?

WillowRulez - I like that my update was the pick me up you needed :) Hopefully this one will make you happy too.

jay/wt4evr - Short and simple feedback eh?! It's still very appreciated! :D

JustSkipIt - I'm still waiting on that suggestion lady! Hehe! I've always thought of Faith as being as equally outspoken as Anya, and that's how I've tried to write her in my story. And yes, I totally understand not liking Xander getting all pervy all the time. I'd be uncomfy if my guy friend had fantasies about me and another woman :p As for Willow's take on her gay-ness, well, again, I find it annoying when she's been straight, falls for a woman and all of a sudden is announcing her gayness to the world. I'm glad you like my approach :)

redjassy - Hey Joan! When do you next see Vanessa? I'm glad your friends are supportive of you and the missus...if they weren't, then they weren't your friends to start with :) And yes, like I have always said, we will get to smoochies! In the meantime, enjoy the ride there!

Spoilers - Nada
Pairing - W/T, A/X, and the rest and pretty much made up by yours truly.
Settings - AU. Tara's a jock, and meet's Willow during a handball tournament.
Rating - PG 13 at the most (Yes, I swear it will change some day!)

Chapter 77.

An awkward silence still hung in the room as the three best friends sat around eating the recently-cooled chocolate cake. They’d moved their conversation back to the kitchen, and Willow had figured now was as good a time as any to pop open a bottle of her father’s finest French wine.

“Sooo…” Buffy said, breaking the silence as she processed the story her redheaded best friend (‘Who sounds like she’s definitely gay…’) had just told her. “You think you catch her looking at you, you’re definitely in love…” she stopped at that, giving Willow a meaningful look. When Willow nodded, Buffy continued, “You’re definitely in love with her, and your memories of last night are hazy post walking into the after-party?” Willow nodded again, just as Buffy added as an after-thought, “Oh, and Tara said that Andrew said something about how she was a lucky girl?”

Nod. This time, with the hint of a blush for company. Buffy and Xander missed the extra redness on the redhead, because they were busy letting the information sink in. “Welll…” Xander began, and Willow briefly tried to remember her two closest friends ever being at such a loss for words. “Faith was right when she said you should ask her before someone else, you know, does.” He went silent again, before looking at Buffy and shaking his head “I still can’t believe Faith saw it, and we didn’t”.

Buffy reached for her glass of wine and nodded. “Well, in your defense, you haven’t really spent all that much time around Tara and me…” Willow said matter-of-factly. She was met with two pairs of blinking eyes, and the barest of nods from Xander.

“Ok” Buffy started, seeming to shake herself out of it. “You’re in love” she said, turning to smile at Willow, and looking like it was the first time she’d actually understood that fact. “And Tara…well, she seems really nice?” she asked, more a question that a statement.

Before Willow could answer, Xander spoke up “Buff, she teaches kids that could really use the help. It’s hard to find someone that nice with a name that doesn’t start with a ‘Mother’ or end with a ‘Teresa’.” Willow smiled at that, and was secretly glad that her friends were rediscovering their sense of humour after nearly 30 minutes without it. “Besides, we both know that the jock in you is very impressed at her handball skills. And hello? Your job! And well, she is kinda hot…” Xander said, wiggling his eyebrows at a wide-eyed Willow. “What? You saying I’m wrong?” he asked, with a smile on his face and in his voice.

Willow shook her head vigorously. “Nope” she said, as her head kept shaking ‘no’. The teasing relaxed the atmosphere in the room, and Xander topped up his glass of wine before settling back in his chair. “So,” Buffy started, now serious again, “You’d date Tara if you could right?” Nod. “And you think that you might actually have a real shot here?” Nod again. “Well then, you just have to tell her.”

Willow’s eyes went wide again “But how? I mean I think she likes me, but what if I’m horribly wrong? And she gets offended?”

“Will” Xander spoke up softly, “You’re going to have to take that chance. Unless you have a better idea?”

The redhead shook her head slowly, “I know you’re right, really, I do. It’s just…I know I want to date her…but I don’t know if I’m ready to put myself out there yet…” Looking up she saw confusion on the faces of her two best friends, and read their minds “No, no, I’m ok with telling people that I like Tara, if Tara were by my side…but I’m not ready to tell other’s yet for the chance that it’s one-sided, and we know how stories have a funny way of getting to the wrong ears. And I’m not ready to tell Tara herself yet if telling Tara means losing Tara” she finished, hoping her friends understood.

“You know…” Buffy started after a moment’s silence, looking thoughtful, “I’m sure there was a simpler way to say that, but…I get it”.

They looked over at Xander, who seemed like he was still working out Willow’s last sentence in his head. A few seconds later he spoke up, “Ok, I get it too. But Will, have you thought of the possible scenario where hanging out with possibly-only-friend Tara makes you fall more in, umm, love with her, making the possible ultimate rejection that bit harder?”

Taking a deep breath, Willow nodded slowly. “I guess that’s another chance I’ll have to take.”

Buffy swallowed the piece of cake she’d cut for herself, then said “Right, we’re your best friends, so we’ll let you have your way, but there’s a condition. You can’t take too long to either tell her, or get over your romantic feelings for her. No matter which way you look at it, unrequited love isn’t good for you, and I will not stand by and let you mope for God knows how long.”

Willow understood her friends point, and promised “Not too long.”

******************************************************************************

It was past midnight when Xander and Buffy left Willow’s home. The three friends had been close for too long for Buffy and Xander to have any private thoughts about that evening’s main subject that they hadn’t already shared in Willow’s house. The redhead waved goodbye from her door as Buffy started up her car, and began the drive to Xander’s house. “I really like this song” Buffy said, turning the sound up on ‘her new station’ as ‘Broken Strings’ started to play.

“Who is this?” Xander asked. “Nelly Furtado and James Morrison. And no,” she said, knowing what Xander would ask next, “I don’t know if he’s related to Jim”.

Xander grinned at how well his friend knew him, and sat back. A few moments later Buffy turned down the volume, “Is that your phone?”

Sure enough, Xander’s pocket was vibrating, and he pulled it out of his pocket. “Anya” he said aloud, before opening up the phone’s flap “Hey you!” Buffy smiled at the obvious pleasure in his voice, and continued to focus on the road.

“It starts tomorrow? What time? … I thought camp was next week? … Aah ok, cool. Would you mind if I, you know, dropped in to watch? …Great! Yeah, I’ll see you after classes. Alright, sweet dreams. Night night!”

“That was Anya” he said, smiling from ear-to-ear. “I kinda figured” Buffy said, quickly glancing at Xander with a fond smile on her face.

Xander ignored his friends playful smartass-edness, and went on “We both have breaks in our time-tables at 10:45 on Tuesdays, and were gonna meet at the café?” Buffy nodded without taking her eyes off the road, so he continued, “Apparently the handball coach wants to get the Sunnydale girls selected for next week’s California camp together for some extra training, so she’ll be heading there at 11. I’ll just see after my last class wraps at 12:30.” He noticed that while Buffy still watched the street, she’d got a thoughtful frown on her face. “What?” he asked.

“You think Anya would know if Tara…you know?” she asked. Xander just shrugged, “She hasn’t really said anything to me…but then, why would she right? You don’t really talk about other people’s love lives unless there’s a reason, right?…” He went silent for a few seconds before adding “I could ask her, but I don’t know, maybe she’d get offended at the questions? And…”

“Whoa! Whoa!” Buffy said, laughing out loud. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves! If the topic ever comes up, see what she says. Otherwise…well, I’d really like to see Willow do this herself. Like, we could nudge her in the right direction, but, I think it’s really important that she have the courage to handle this herself, you know?”

Xander nodded, before Buffy said “That doesn’t mean that you can’t take her along to watch handball practice tomorrow.” They’d pulled up outside Xander’s, “After all, Tara IS on the list of California probables, right?” The wide-smile on Buffy’s face told Xander just how pleased she was with that little brainwave.

************************************************************************************

Tara climbed into bed, and pulled the covers up around her. It had been a long day. Right after Willow and Faith had dropped her home, Tara had unpacked her bags and headed straight to the radio station’s headquarters. She had to make sure that all the tapes and other equipment had made it back safe to office, and there was some paper work to be sorted. During a random coffee break she’d stopped by at H.R to see how their first impression of Buffy had been, and so far it was all good. She’d also made the time to quickly ring up Sean’s parents, and asked them to let the kids know that she was on for after-school study at hers on Wednesday.

Coach Giles had also rung that afternoon, asking her how her ankle was. He’d told her that he had organized for Sunnydale's California probables to get some extra training under him before next week’s camp, and Tara had immediately said that she’d be there. Her coach advised her to let her ankle rest a bit, and it was only after Tara promised to take it easy and not run or jump too much that he gave her permission to come to the indoor court the next day. The blonde was looking forward to the idea of getting some extra practice in before she was joined by other fantastic players from outside Sunnydale.

Tara had only gotten home at around 7 that evening, and after making herself a quick sandwich, had immediately sat down to add the finishing touches to a paper that was due the next day. Her mind briefly wandered to Willow, as it had been doing all day. ‘I wonder what Willow’s studying at uni…and I can’t believe I haven’t asked her yet!’ She added that to her list of questions for Willow, which seemed to go up by the moment. There was so much she wanted to know about the redhead, and how she felt about Tara herself was at the top of that list. Shaking her head, she’d focused her concentration on the paper. 2 hours later she was happy with her argument on why performance enhancing drugs should not be permitted in the sporting world, and satisfied, saved the word document once and for all.

Rising, she’d quickly texted Anya, and walked into her bathroom to get ready for bed. By the time she’d changed into her PJ’s, the brunette had replied saying she was still hard at work on her own paper. She had added that her and Cordelia would see Tara at 10:55 a.m the next morning at the handball arena, and seemed as happy as Tara at the prospect of playing handball.

Tara yawned, as she slowly slipped into unconsciousness. ‘I have to remember to careful with my foot tomorrow…’ She closed her eyes ‘Mmm…I hope I get to see Willow around tomorrow…’

See you get far even when I'm not swamped with trips and work and things like that. And you finally started using my name...wow...its no longer the formal "writerfreak" that most know me as.

I love this by the way, the supportive friends, same old Xander and Buffy. It's wonderful, as always.

Moi? Smartass? I know not what you speak. ;-)

Okay so Willow is acknowledging her feelings out loud...this is good. Now if someone would just give her a firm kick on the butt so she'll go plant a big ole smooch on Tara. I hear those handball practices get pretty wild. Nothing says good game like a little slip of the tongue, right? lol

Loved the update. Hope these little drop-ins of yours continue to happen more frequently.

Chapter 78

Postby Shai » Tue Feb 17, 2009 12:32 pm

Right, so I'm trying to deliver on my promise of regular updates. I know the story moves slowly, but its simply because I have to add in every detail I can think of! I offer my apologies to the more impatient of you'll for that flaw in my writing personality! I hope this update helps cheer you up...

Cheers!

tacoda13 - Here's more! Any other requests? :p

jay/wt4evr - Feedback, short or not is always appreciated :) I trust you're happy with how the story is progressing?

WillowRulez - The story's back at the top of the thread! hehe!

writerfreak - Well, now that I KNOW your name, I can use it! How have you been? I don't get onto msn much, but I did catch you message the other day when I got home and saw the machine on :p How are you?

Zampsa1975 - First practice session is underway ma'am! Like it?

LittleBit - Thank you Hannah, for pointing that out! Now you see how much I miss Kiri, and wish I was already in Brissy? :p Kiri is better now, and her Dad's back in town too. How are you? And are you happy with this update?

redjassy - Well, I was in London for a few months, but back in Bombay now. London's gloomy, and dark, and I missed the sun, hehe! How are you?

Sandman78 - Oh, thank God someone's on my side! These other kittens *points* only want smoochies! Seriously, thanks for your feedback...and support ;)

ophelia11- I'm sure I could include YOU in the story to kick both our leading ladies on their behinds? :p And I get the feeling I do NOT want to know what kind of handball you've been watching...are you sure that Mrs. of yours isn't sneaking in DVD's of the kinf of handball that ISN'T played at the Olympics? Speaking of that evil spawn, where is she?!

Chapter 78.

Tara pulled the keys out of the ignition, picked up her gym bag from the passenger seat, and gingerly stepped down from the driver’s seat of her jeep. She hated her fear of small heights, but figured it was only normal given the fact that she’d managed to sprain her ankle at least half a dozen times doing dangerous things like walking down the stairs.

The blonde made her way up to the stadium’s double doors, and was surprised to see Emily and Faith already standing there 5 minutes early, obviously waiting for their friends to arrive. “Hey guys” she smiled, making her way up to them. She received hugs and “hey’s” from both the girls and the three of them quickly started an excited conversation about the upcoming National's camp. A couple of minutes later they were joined by Anya and Cordelia, who came together from uni, and all five women walked through the double doors towards the indoor handball court.

The five women reached the court, and saw Coach Giles standing in the middle of the court, talking to some of the guys from various universities across Sunnydale. Tara spotted Zak and two of his friends amongst the group, and realized that they were probably amongst the 25 boys from across California who had been short listed for the men’s squad. Without having to even discuss it, the girls made their way as one towards Coach Giles, and also spotted two other girls in shorts, who had so far been hidden from view by the taller guys.

“Anyone know who they are?” Anya asked, and without breaking their stride, the others responded with “nope’s”. Coach Giles looked up when the girl’s almost reached the group around him, and smiled in recognition, “Hello girls”. Zak also came around to hug the five women he knew so well, and then looked back at the coach “Alright Coach...we’ll get changed”. Coach Giles nodded, and the boys who were still in their day clothes went to change, while the one’s already wearing shorts moved away, leaving the coach to talk to the girls. Tara watched the boys walk towards the changing rooms, and smiled at how easily Zak took the position of leader. In her mind, Tara knew that Zak was the most accomplished of the group, with two National’s camps and one call up under his belt, so she had no doubt that he deserved the respect the other men so obviously gave him.

Turning her attention back to Coach Giles, she saw him motioning the two strangers towards them, “Girls, this is Anne”, he indicated towards the girl whose stand out feature was short blonde hair with a bright pink streak running through a chunk of strands on one side, “and this is Reese”, he motioned to the African-American girl with the body of an athlete. “They’re only 16, but have performed well enough at the school level tournaments to receive a well-deserved call-up to the camp.” Coach Giles smiled kindly at the two youngsters, and said “These are Tara, Faith, Cordelia, Emily and Anya”, and each girl smiled or gave a short wave to the newbies as their names were said. Anne and Reese’s faces had registered some form of recognition at some of the names, which hadn’t been missed by Coach Giles. Looking at the older women, he said “I trust you will all take these two under your wings, seeing as you have all been to this stage before”. His tone was kind but left no room for argument, and he received five nods. The coach nodded his own head in return, then looked at the chunky black sports watch on his left wrist “Right, so it’s 11:10. You girls want to change and be back in 5 minutes to start with your warm up?” The five older women nodded and walked to the changing rooms, as Coach Giles and the already kitted up Anne and Reese walked over to the bags with the handballs in them.

They were back out in under 5 minutes, and saw that Coach Giles had already got the boys warming up on one side of the court. Tara put her gym bag down on one of the player benches, and then sat down herself to wrap her right ankle in her trusty crepe bandage. She was just pinning it up in place when Coach Giles walked over to her, and said “You’re to go easy on your foot, alright? If I see as much as a half attempt at taking a 9, I’ll have you off there in a second.”

“But Coach…” Tara began to argue, but was silenced when Coach Giles put his right hand up in the air “That’s the best I have to offer Tara. I know you’re a brilliant player, but you are not Superwoman, and your ankle needs the rest. Maybe Thursday, but definitely not today.”

Tara realized she had no choice, and nodding glumly slipped her shoe back on, then followed the coach to the other side of the court where the women were standing together.

************************************************************************************

Willow and Xander walked into the handball area a little after noon to the sound of heavy running, yelling, screeching shoes and a blowing whistle. The lights were on, illuminating the court but leaving its surroundings in relative darkness. The two friends walked to a row of bleachers, and quietly sat down to watch the action. Willow’s eyes immediately sought out Tara’s form, and saw her in conversation with Anya and Cordelia, while Coach Giles explained something to two younger girls the redhead had never seen before. She also spotted Faith standing near a bunch of gym bags, taking a sip from a water bottle.

Xander tapped his best friend and said “There they are”, just in case she hadn’t spotted Tara standing in conversation with his girlfriend. Willow nodded without looking in his direction, and he said “I wonder what they’re talking about.”

Willow shrugged, “Probably shop-talk?” She felt more than saw Xander nod in agreement.

************************************************************************************

“So you kissed her cheek? Anya said, clearly interested in that bit of information. Tara nodded, so she asked, “Did you mean to?”

Tara shook her head, and checked to see that Coach Giles was still talking to Anne and Reese, before saying, “No…I just…did? I mean, I’d started to walk away, and then just turned around without really thinking about what I was doing, and gave her a goodnight kiss on the cheek…”. Tara thought of how soft Willow’s cheek had felt under her lips, and blushed at the memory. Her friends didn’t seem to notice, as Cordelia asked, “And then she asked you to kiss her forehead?”

Tara nodded again, but added with emphasis “Later, when it was hurt”, as if that made it more logical. Anya quickly added “But hey, she was also drunk!”, and Cordelia nodded in a sagely manner. “Yup…drunk Willow asked for a kiss. That’s got to mean something…” she said, continuing to nod in that wiser-than-thou way.

Coach Giles blew his whistle, indicating that he wanted the girls back around him.

*************************************************************************************

Willow heard the whistle being blown, and spotted Emily jogging back from the direction of what she remembered to be the changing rooms. She watched Coach Giles explain something to seven nodding women, and then walk over to where the boys were practicing. Her gaze followed him till he was amongst the huddle of boys, and then went back to the women’s side, where Anya had taken up her position guarding the goal from its enemies.

She saw that the six other women had formed a line which started at the penalty-taking spot, and Faith was at the front. Emily, who was standing at the back of the line, clapped once, and Faith launched herself into a shot. Her attempt went wide though, and Willow saw Anya say something to Faith out loud. Unfortunately, even though Willow and Xander could hear her voice, they couldn’t make out what she’d said. They presumed it was something cocky though, because Faith poked her tongue out at the goalkeeper before going to retrieve the ball she’d chucked off court.

Willow glanced over at Xander, to see him sitting there with a fond smile on his face. “Awww” she said, smiling at the obvious affection her best friend felt for his girlfriend, and patted his arm. He looked down at Willow, returning her smile, before both looked back at the court. Cordelia was next in line, and once again, Emily gave a single clap. Cordelia reared back on one foot, then released with all her might, but Anya was there to stop the ball from getting into the top left corner. “Woo hoo!” Anya yelled, and this time Xander and Willow could clearly hear her. The goalkeeper threw the collected ball back to Cordelia, who went and stood behind the goal beside Faith.

Tara was now at the front, and Willow felt her heartbeat pick up at the simple prospect of watching Tara play handball. What surprised the redhead the most was the fact that big ball sports had never really been her thing, and yet here she was, watching Tara in absolute fascination. She watched as Emily clapped again, and Tara raised her right arm in all its grace. The hand reared back, and released the ball with amazing speed towards the right hand bottom corner…but Anya’s foot was there to deflect it!

“It looks like mine topped yours Willster!” Xander grinned, as Anya let out another yelping sound and Willow initially thought she was going to give Tara the finger, till she realized that Anya actually had three fingers held up. ‘Three for three’ she thought, and saw Tara grin at her before taking off in a slow trot behind the ball. Her eyes were still on the blonde when everyone’s attention was drawn to a loud cheer from the boys’ side of the court. Three guys were standing celebrating a goal, and looked a bit embarrassed when they realized all eyes were on them. “Sorry! Got a little carried away!” one said out loud, to no one in particular, and walked back to his position.

Willow looked back at the women, and saw that Tara, Willow and Cordelia were having a laugh behind Anya’s net. Whatever they were talking about was funny enough for Tara to be bent over, holding on to her own knees and laughing with abandon. It struck Willow that this was the first time that she’d seen Tara laugh like that. She began to replay the moments she’d shared with Tara so far, and realized that she’d only seen Tara behave as a responsible young lady, whether it came to her relationship with her coworkers at the concert, back in LA or even around uni. She thought back to the night out with the Sunnydale handball team to celebrate their victory, and acknowledged that even an intoxicated Tara had been better behaved that the others. What Willow was now seeing was almost child-like glee on the face of the beautiful blonde woman.

Tara was now standing upright watching Reese attempt a penalty shot, and when the youngster managed to become the first one to beat Anya, the three women at the back dissolved into what could only be described as hysterical laughter. Willow didn’t know what was so funny, but found her own face breaking into a smile as she watched Tara. Apparently Anne converting her goal didn’t help the three women either, since Faith actually sat down and continued to giggle. ‘I wonder what’s so funny…’ Willow wondered, still smiling at a blonde who was now wiping tears away from her cheeks.

*************************************************************************************

“So, according to Coach Giles’ logic…only Reese and Anne will make it into the side?” Emily said, as she too joined the party at the back of the net, and dissolved into laughter.

“And me!” Anya said, walking over to her friends with a smile on her face. The girls were referring to the talk Coach Giles had given them before setting them the task of penalty practice, and said that from past experience he knew that only girls who were good with penalties usually made the first team. Tara, Faith, Cordelia and Emily meant no offense to the two newbies, but couldn’t help but feel amused at the fact that the youngsters had outshone them. In fact, Faith had even suggested that they all give up on handball, which is what had set them all off in the first place.

Coach Giles walked over to the girls’ side again, and beckoned for the seven women to join him. He smiled at them as they gathered around him, and said kindly “Don’t think I haven’t been watching!” This made the senior’s beam at him, and he continued in a more sober tone “Ok, let’s get a little serious now ? I’d like you all to do this one more time, but this time, anyone who misses doesn’t get to shoot again till theres only one person left who hasn’t missed. Ok?” They nodded their understanding at hime, “And Anya? You need to try and make sure no player passes you more than thrice.” The goalkeeper nodded, and the girls went back to their original formation.

Coach Giles walked to the side with a small smile on his face, ready to observe the girls and their technique. He knew the senior’s well enough to know that even though they were the best of friends, they were fiercely competitive in the best possible sense, and each one would want to best the others. He also thought this would be a good attitude for Reese and Anne to be exposed to early on at this level. Coach Giles blew his whistle and watched as Faith took her shot, and converted with ease. She winked at Anya, and went to the back of the line with her ball. Cordelia, Tara, Reese, Anne and Emily also converted their first attempts, so Faith took her second turn. Anya missed, so Coach Giles yelled out “C’mon Anya! Watch your center!”

Anya nodded without looking at him, and slightly slouched, waiting for Cordelia to take her turn. The tall brunette released the ball, but Anya made a brilliant stop by flinging herself at it before it made it to the left top corner. The other girls clapped, as a visibly dejected Cordelia gave Anya an appreciative nod and began to make her way back to her coach.

*************************************************************************************

Willow clearly heard Coach Giles say, “Cordelia, start running!”. She watched as the brunette nodded her head, and made her way to the side of the court, where she deposited her handball, and started jogging around the court.

“I now understand why these women are so fit…” Xander said, and it struck Willow that this was the first time he was watching people play handball. “Of course!” she said, looking over at him. “You met Anya at the Bronze!!!” She looked back at the court, and watched Tara convert her penalty and blow a mock kiss towards Anya. Anya’s voice carried to them, “Oh! Shoo you!”. The blonde grinned and walked to the back of the line, and Willow once again thought about how much she was enjoying watching this side of Tara.

Anya blocked Reese’s shot, and the youngster was made to run around the court too. Anne completely missed the goal at all, and after retrieving the ball she joined Cordelia and Reese. Willow watched Cordelia for a few moments, and was amazed at how she was still jogging at the same steady pace, even as she kept an eye on the penalty shootout that was taking place on the girls’ side of the court.

Faith, Tara and Emily continued converting their shots for the next three rounds, and Anya was visibly agitated at herself. Xander and Willow could hear her muttering aloud to herself every time she missed a ball that she clearly thought she should have stopped, and looking over at her best friend, Willow was amused to see him smiling at Anya with the same affection as when she was being all Wonder-Keeper-y! Faith cracked on her 6th shot, and took off running around the court without even waiting for Coach Giles to ask.

Tara asked Emily a question which Willow couldn’t hear, and then jogged up to where the gym bags were. She pulled what to Willow looked like two red bandanas out of a bag, which Willow again presumed belonged to the blonde. She also grabbed two water bottles, and jogged back onto the court, but this time went all the way to Anya at the goal. She said something to the goalie, who seemed to consider it for a split-second before nodding her head, and then placed one water bottle each a few centimeters from the left and right goalpost. Then she quickly tied one red bandana each on of each side of the top bar of the goal, and went back to Emily. It dawned on Willow that each of the goals corners now had an object there, and it dawned on the redhead what Tara was doing.

She leaned forward in her seat, and watched with heightened interest as Emily and Tara continued converting their shots, but this time, the ball connected with either a bandana or a bottle. Willow marvelled at the precision with which the two were shooting, and the fact that even though Anya knew what she had to protect, the shooters had the game to continue beating her. What Willow found most intriguing though was the fact that even though you could tell both girls were still chatting amongst themselves and applauding particularly good shots the other made, they were obviously also issuing silent challenges to one another. Emily tended to turn around, look at Tara and say “Yours then”, while the blonde seemed to prefer looking at her dark-haired friend with a raised eyebrow that screamed “Top that!”

Emily had converted her 12th goal by knocking down the water bottle in the bottom left corner, and was stepping aside for Tara to take position when Coach Giles blew his whistle. Both women watched him walk up to them, and gesture for the running girls to come to him. “What’s going on?” Willow asked. She had thought he’d been waiting for Emily or Tara to miss, but it was looking like she’d presumed wrong.

“Beats me” Xander said, shrugging.

*************************************************************************************

“Well done, Tara and Emily” Coach Giles smiled, walking up to the two women. “Unfortunately, we don’t have all day here, and it didn’t look like either of you were going to miss anytime soon” he continued, as the other girls gathered around them. We’re taking a 15 minute break, but you three”, he said, pointing to the two ‘finalists’ of the penalty shootout and Anya, “will run for 10 of those.” With that, he went over to the boys’ side of the court, and Emily rolled her eyes at Tara “Winning sure has its perks, doesn’t it?!”

Tara laughed at the sarcasm in her friend’s voice, and the trio moved to drop their balls off where the other girls had left theirs. Emily set the timer on her stopwatch to 10 minutes, and they took off jogging.

They’d been running for a few minutes when Anya said between paces “Hey look…it’s…Xander and…Willow”. Tara’s heart was already beating a little bit faster due to the act of jogging, but it sped up when she looked in the direction her friend was staring at, and saw a flash of red hair in the darkness. The trio passed a bend in the lines, and now had their backs to Xander and Willow. “Think she…came…to watch…you?” Anya asked.

“What?” Emily asked, who was running alongside the two and not following their conversation at all. Anya looked at Tara, who ignored the first question and chose to respond to Emily instead, “Long…story...Later”. The group of runners watched a boy begin to run around the court, and saw that Coach Giles now had the boys in a penalty shoot out contest too. They passed another bend, and were again facing Xander and Willow, who had now made their way down from the bleachers to courtside. The trio slowed as they passed the duo, and Anya said “Five minutes” to her waiting boyfriend. They exchanged huge smiles, and each also noticed their best friend smile at the object of her affections.

The three women continued their run, and every now and then Tara and Willow would find themselves looking at each other at the same time, and exchanged smiles each time. The redhead made sure to breathe in extra long through her nose each time Tara passed by her, and silently swore she could distinctly make out Tara’s vanilla scent every time. She was just saying that to herself again when she heard a familiar voice say “Hey Red!”

“Faith” she smiled, even before turning to face the brunette, who was sipping from a water bottle. “How are you?”

“Good” Faith smiled, and Willow turned to introduce the handball player to her best friend. Tara was watching the interaction when Emily’s timer went off. She reached to switch it off even as she continued to run, and the girls silently completed the whole lap before stopping. They stood there a few moments catching their breath, before making their way to their own water bottles. Emily chose to join Cordelia, who was watching the guys’ penalty shootout, while Anya and Tara walked up to Faith, Willow and Xander.

Faith quickly leaned close to Willow’s ear and tried to look at normal as possible as she quickly whispered “I’ll leave you to it then”, and took off behind Emily. Anya made her way to Xander, and wrapping her arms around his neck planted a quick but firm kiss on his lips. “Hello handsome” she beamed, and holding his hand started to lead him away for some alone time. Xander looked over at Willow even as his feet began to move, and she gave him a reassuring smile that conveyed that it was ok. Looking up, she saw Tara standing before her, and without having to think about it, leaned in to give the sweaty blonde a hug.

She felt Tara return the hug, and each girl wrapped their arms around the other for a few seconds, before they pulled back with matching grins. “So…” Willow started, as they moved as one to sit on the closest bench, “Who’re they?” she asked, pointing towards Reese and Anne, who had obviously decided to stick together.

“High-school kids” Tara said matter-of-factly, before tilting her head back to take a swig of her water. Willow watched mesmerized as Tara’s neck curved, and then visibly moved as she swallowed. The redhead had to swallow herself when she saw a bead of sweat make it's way down Tara's neck and disappear somewhere down her tee-shirt, and forced her gaze back to the youngsters, “They’re good though” Tara continued. She was just aout to launch into an explanation of that morning’s session when she stopped “Wait, how long have you been here?”

Willow’s green eyes looked at her own wristwatch, and she said, “Just over 40 minutes now…ummm”, Tara watched her intently, “you, Anya and Cordelia were standing there”, she pointed to the back of the goal, “and talking about something?”

Tara blushed, remembering what they’d been talking about. Luckily, she was already red from the exertion of the last hour and forty-five minutes, so Willow didn’t really see the extra colour her innocent statement brought to Tara's cheeks. She nodded, “So yeah, Coach Giles was working on our moves earlier this morning, and they’re very good at faking. Reese even beat Faith five times in a row, and trust me, that's an achievement on it's own”, she said, sounding impressed. “Anyway,” her brow creased slightly, and she turned to give Willow her full attention, “You? Here?” Her eyes went wide as she realized how that might sound bad, so she rushed to add “Not that that’s a bad thing! Really! I’m just, curious?”

Willow instinctively reached out her hand and placed it on the blonde’s arm, to reassure her that she wasn’t offended, “Xander was coming to watch Anya, and my classes were done too, and…it’s always nice to see you” she ended, in a more quiet tone than she’d mentioned the other things.

Tara still heard her, and the blondes face broke out into a smile at the redhead’s admission. Willow had averted her gaze as she’d said the last part of her sentence, but looking up she saw genuine pleasure in the blue eye’s that were looking straight at her. The two women just sat there smiling at each other for a few moments, when they heard Coach Giles blow his whistle and call for the girls.

Tara looked at him, then back at the redhead, who still had her hand on the blondes arm. She realized that as much as she loved being on the handball court and playing the sport, in an ideal world, that isn't what she'd be doing right now.

“I guess you have to go back” Willow said, removing her hand from Tara’s arm. Tara nodded her head and looked at the green eyed girl who had so captivated her heart, and heard herself asking “Wanna stick around?”

Willow looked at her with her eyebrows raised in a silent question, so Tara added “We should be done with practice in about 45 minutes? Wanna do coffee afterwards? Unless you have something else planned…” she trailed off, unsure that her offer would be accepted, and believing that someone like Willow would have something better to do with her time.

“I’ll be right here Tara” Willow said happily, and was rewarded with a joyous expression which she knew mirrored her own before the blonde stood up and went back on court. Tara could feel Willow’s eyes on her, and even while she still had no clue what the redhead felt for her, she had to admit that she loved that Willow was there at all.

Hello Shai!

I don't think I've ever left you feedback before but I've been following along and am very pleased that you're back at it! You've created a really rich world peopled with absolutely believable characters. You are dealing with the burgeoning relationship very realistically, as it should take a while to figure out what your feelings are and then even longer to act on them (having said that though, I'd be a-okay with a little kissage in the near future!!).

It is wonderful that both girls are finally confiding in their friends--cuz it isn't real until you tell someone! Thank you for including such a super cute exchange between the girls; it says a lot that the hug and arm touching came so naturally to Willow (rather than her spazzing out about it, either before or after!).

Thank you so much for the update! And I'm looking forward to coffee!

Yeah I think I knew beforehand that you missed Kiri!! :p And it's never not been the case that your thoughts are with Kiri! :D I should probably see what she's up to this weekend ... I think I could do with an extended dance session at the wick!

Yeah I'm really loving this story .... even if they are like taking forever!!!! But I'm loving the handball training session ... did you really have to train like that??? That's hardcore! Have I told you about soccer preseason training this year ... I've lost count of the number of times we've done the square of death (let me know if you need more info about this).

So coffee date huh! You know I've gone on coffee dates and gotten some action ... can our girls please get a little?????? I'm not asking for them to jump into bed together .... but accidental kissing does happen!!! :p

Sheebs!

That whole update put a smile on my face. You write the cutesie very well. ;-)

I thought Tara confiding in her friends about the Willow kiss was a good sign of things to come. Seems like both women are realizing their relationship is evolving.

Now you know what goes great with coffee? Kisses. Lots and lots of kisses. I'm not even skipping ahead to the naughty touching. Kisses and flirty touches are just fine.

The wife lingers about somewhere. If you don't feel thoroughly harrassed by me, I'm sure she could pop in to finish the job.

As always, it's nice seeing you around more. Hope things are going well in your neck of the woods.

Chapter 79.

Postby Shai » Thu Feb 26, 2009 2:30 pm

And I'm back with a fresh installment of what many people call the never ending fic, lol! I just wanted to thank everyone who's been sending me feedback....your comments are what make us writers want to update at *looks at the time* 2:47 a.m :p So yeah, keep it coming, ja?!

Zampsa1975 - Haha, by now you should know that the girls aren't going to reveal all that easily! Just enjoy the ride!

masterjendu - Welcome to the thread! I'm glad you're enjoying the direction our two girls are taking. I also like that you think of it as realistic, because that's what I'm trying to be. Hopefully, you'll enjoy this update :)

tacoda13 - First of all, thank you for the flattering PM! And yes, here's one of the 'more updates' you demanded!

writerfreak - You could have just been quoting someone else in your signature ;) I also saw your comment in the top 3 fics thread on Facebook, and am sooooo flattered! Thank you!

WillowRulez - Friends are always important. I certainly believe that they can either aid or turn the coming out process into a nightmare, depending on how they react. That's why I've made sure the girls have a good support group, while trying to make it as realistic as possible at the same time.

LittleBit - I think Kiri'd be more than happy to dance at The Wickham. She once told me that the bouncer there thought she was employed to dance there :p Yes, we did have to train like that. Once I was one of the final two in the penalty shoot-out thing, and the coach was making the other girls do 20 rounds of the court. The other girl and I continued to score, so he decided to stop it, and as a "prize", we had to try and finish our 20 rounds at the same time as the other girls. I think I nearly died that day :p Is the square of death anything like a german drill? And I just have to ask, what exactly is "accidental kissing"???

ophelia11 - The cutesie is happy you like it! Kisses and coffee huh? I'm guessing Mika wouldn't ever want you waitresing at a cafe :p Lol! Please ask the wife why she's never on msn anymore?

redjassy - You Kittens and your smoochie love! It makes me wonder how long you people took to get to second base with your partners :p You're still in Dubai then?

kimmy_s - I *heart* Australia! Lol! Whereabouts does your girlfriend live? I am sooooo flattered at your belief that this would sell as a fiction novel! I now know what my backup plan is in life ;) And yes, I know that you have always followed this fic, and nothing makes me happier :)

TinyWillow - I'm trying not to make you Kittens wait for too long! I trust you like how the story's unfolding?

Sandman78 - The more happy kittens the merrier ;)

JustSkipIt - Thankee :) And check your PM!

Spoilers - Nada
Pairing - W/T, A/X, and the rest and pretty much made up by yours truly.
Settings - AU. Tara's a jock, and meet's Willow during a handball tournament.
Rating - PG 13 at the most (Yes, I swear it will change some day!)

Chapter 79.

Willow had returned to her previous spot in the bleachers, where Xander joined her a few moments later. The dark haired boy had given her a cheeky grin when she told him of her post-practice coffee plans with Tara, but the redhead thankfully noticed that he didn’t press the issue any more than that. They’d sat together watching the second half of the session, and Willow noticed that this time Tara kept glancing in their direction. Even though she was quite sure there was no way Tara could see herself and Xander in the relative darkness surrounding the court, Willow was warmed by the idea that the blonde was still trying.

The redhead also realized that she had more knowledge than Xander on the sport they were watching, so she took it upon herself to explain it to the best of her abilities when some fifteen minutes into the second session, Coach Giles made mixed teams with the boys and girls, and had them play a practice game. Willow had told Xander to watch out for Tara’s jump shots, and was most surprised when the final buzzer went off and the blonde hadn’t even attempted one. In fact, more often than not Tara would get into position and attempt a fake, or drag a player onto her and then pass the ball to someone else who’d had the sense to run into the now clear spot. Her best friend didn’t seem to have noticed, because Anya was having a great game keeping, and Xander couldn’t stop grinning at his girl. Even though her vision couldn’t have been any better than Tara’s, the goalie kept looking up in their direction too, and once again Willow found herself smiling at the obvious affection Anya and Xander felt for each another.

She had glanced at her watch when the final buzzer rang, and saw that Tara’s assumption of practice ending in 45 minutes was more or less correct. She and Xander had risen and gone down towards the group of girls who by then were standing around sipping from their water bottles, listening as the coach pointed out flaws and strengths in each one’s game. As they drew closer, Willow heard Coach Giles finishing off his talk aimed at Tara “…I’m sure it feels fine, but I’d like you to take it easy for one more day. Don’t forget that the California coach and his team of professionals are going to want to look at it, so let’s not take anymore risks than we already are?”

Willow wondered what the coach was talking about as her eyes watched Tara slowly nod her head with the hint of… “A pout?”. The redhead stopped in her tracks and stared as if under a spell as the blonde’s bottom lip jutted out a little more than usual while her head bobbed up and down. Coach Giles nodded his head in turn at Tara, and then turned his attention to Cordelia. “Uhh Will?” Xander whispered right into the redhead’s ear, breaking her out of the mini trance the Tara-pout had brought on, “It’s kind’ve stalker-ish to stand and stare you know?” Even in a whisper his voice held an undercurrent of amusement, and he was awarded with a mock glare from his best friend.

The words did succeed in bringing motion back to her legs though, and the two friends continued to walk towards their target. Tara looked up as Willow and Xander emerged from the shadows, and her pout was immediately replaced by a soft smile when she saw them. She took another sip from her bottle, but her eyes never left the approaching duo. When they were finally standing right before her, she stopped sipping, swallowed the water in her mouth, and reached her hand out to Xander. “Hey” she smiled.

The brown-haired boy met her hand with his own, and smiled back “How are you?”

Tara grinned and rolled her eyes “Sweaty!”

‘Oooh…’ Willow thought deliciously, as her body reacted in the most unexpected way to that one uttered word. ‘I know another way to get sweaty’ she thought, and then visibly shook her head to clear it as a current seemed to pass straight from her brain, where the thought was generated, through her neck, coursed through her chest and ended up in the pit of her belly. ‘Where did that thought come from?! Bad thought! Ok, not bad, but…’ The redhead could feel herself blush, and was sure her face looked obviously red to anyone who was looking at her. She looked up to see Tara staring at her shaking head with a slightly concerned look, and did the only thing she could think of – she coughed.

Willow coughed like there was no tomorrow, and seconds later Tara was at her side, rubbing slow circles on her back in an effort to calm her down. Willow continued to fake-cough, and stopped about 15 seconds later, when she felt she’d put on enough of a show. She sheepishly looked around to see all the girls, and even some of the guys on the far side of the court, looking at her to see if she was ok. Looking at Xander, she saw that his concern seemed to be mixed with a look that told her he knew what she was doing, and she quickly looked away before he read her mind with that weird power he’d always possessed. Willow’s body almost protested when she felt Tara’s hand stop its movements on her back, but she was soothed by the blonde’s voice, which was asking her if she was alright. She nodded her head, and realized that the fake-coughing had actually left her throat a wee bit sore. When Tara held up her water bottle in silent offering, she gladly accepted it and took a few slow sips to sooth the itchiness away.

Anya, who by then had joined the three of them and was standing with her head resting on Xander’s arm was the first to speak. “You ok?” Willow cleared her throat before speaking, “Yeah…I think I just breathed in the wrong way”. ‘Breathed in the wrong way????’ her conscious yelled at her. ‘Is that even possible?’ The redhead was about to frown and consider the actual possibilities there when she heard Tara say “Are you sure you want to go to coffee after this? I can drop you home if you…”

“No!” Willow said, ‘A tad too vehemently, might I add’ her conscious added, so she repeated in a pitch closer to her normal one, “no…really, it was just a momentary thing.” This time she did chance a quick look at Xander, and his look confirmed her belief that he knew exactly what was going on. Quickly looking back at Tara, she said “I’m definitely up for coffee”.

Tara studied her for a moment, and then smiled that soft smile, “Alright…I’ll just shower really quick?”

Willow nodded as Anya told Xander, “Me too!”, and pecked him on the lips before the two girls gathered their kits and walked to the changing rooms. “You sure you’re breathing alright this time Willster?”

“Oh, hush you!” Willow admonished in an amused tone, swatting her best friend on the arm and rolling her eyes at one of his famous giggles.

**********************************************************************************

She was now seated at a small coffee house 15 minutes away from campus called ‘Brito’, which Tara insisted had the best hot chocolate in the world. The blonde looked like she couldn’t believe that Willow had lived in Sunnydale all her life and had never heard of the place. When they had pulled up to it and the redhead had seen that it was a quaint little café tucked almost out of sight between a dentist’s practice and a photograph processing lab, she’d looked over at the blond and said drily, “Yeah, I wonder how I missed this”.

Tara had pulled the key out of the ignition, thrown a “Smartass” over her shoulder, hopped out of the jeep, and waited for a grinning Willow to join her. The two girls had walked into the little café, whose only furniture apart from the coffee bar was five tables and a small shelf stacked with books. Four of the tables were taken, so Tara quickly asked Willow to claim it while she ordered the hot chocolate. The redhead wanted to protest to the retreating blonde, but noticed two guys about to enter the café, and quickly went to sit down at the unoccupied table. She made a mental note to buy the next round, and then focused her attention on Tara, who was standing behind another customer at the bar. Willow allowed her eyes to appreciatively skim over the blonde from behind, noting how she wore her jeans just loose enough to be comfortable, but not so loose that they made her bottom look like a shapeless lump. In fact, in Willow’s eyes, the faded denims accentuated just the right spots. Green eyes watched the blonde move to the front of the counter, and guiltily realized that technically she was being a pervert, so she allowed her gaze to drift upwards, to the back of the simple white button down three-fourth sleeved shirt Tara had emerged in from the changing rooms post handball practice. Willow’s first thought when she’d seen Tara walk her way was how this woman looked gorgeous no matter what she was wearing.

Tara was currently making easy conversation with the girl behind the bar, and from where Willow was sitting, it looked like they already knew one another. The redhead figured that Tara must be a regular here, as Tara smiled at the waitress one last time before walking in Willow’s direction carrying a tray with two large white cups. She took the spare chair across the redhead, and proceeded to place one of the large hot chocolate filled cups before the other girl. Willow looked down at what to her looked like a swimming pool worth of hot chocolate, and when she looked up she saw that Tara had put her own cup before herself, and was now looking at her with an expectant expression. The redhead arched her own eyebrows at Tara, and said “It’s too hot to try yet!”

“Fine!” Tara huffed, and relaxed back into her chair, obviously waiting for her own cup to cool too. The two smiled at one another in a comfortable silence for a few moments, before Willow remembered something she’d been meaning to ask the blonde. “Hey?” she began, “what was Coach Giles talking about when he said he wanted you to continue to take it easy tomorrow?”

“Oh that? Umm, he wants me to take it easy on my ankle,” Tara slightly lifted her right foot and jiggled it for emphasis, “and says I can only attempt jump shots Thursday onwards…IF he gives me the go ahead that is.”

“Ah”, Willow nodded in understanding, “so that’s why you didn’t attempt any today. I was wondering why you weren’t. I mean, at the tournament you’d get the ball in spots you received it in today, and scored some great jump shots, so I did notice that you weren’t doing the same today”. The redhead reached for her cup, and lifted it to her lips, sticking the tip of her tongue out to check its temperature. Putting it back down, she looked back at Tara to see the blonde watching her with a smile on her face, and shrugged matter-of-factly, “Still too hot.”

“Mmm hmm” Tara said, still smiling slowly at her, till she seemed to shake herself out of it and said “So yeah, Coach Giles just wants me to be careful, since the state coach and his team are going to want to check everyone’s fitness levels at next week’s camp. That means that they’re going to want to get a new x-ray of my ankle and make sure I’m a hundred percent fit to be a part of the final squad. He’s right, it’s just…frustrating to not be able to play my natural game.” She paused for a breath, and then added, “Then again, it’s helping me understand assist’s better, and I’m working on my fakes, which is not something I’d necessarily do too much of if I was physically able to leap-frog everyone!”

Willow bobbed her head in understanding, “Does California always have the same coach?”

Tara shook her head, wrapping her fingers around her cup of hot chocolate at the same time, “Umm, no. The state used to be under this guy called Stephen Roberts until two years ago, but Coach Roberts got offered a really good coaching job in Scotland, so he was replaced by Richard Wilkins last year.”

“Is he any good?” Willow watched as Tara slowly lifted the cup to her lips, and gently blew on the liquid before taking a tentative sip.

“Mmmmm” she moaned softly in pleasure, and closed her eyes to savour the taste of the drink. The vision before her caused Willow to gulp, and she prayed the woman across her hadn’t heard the sound. Some part of her mind advised her that it might be a smart idea to start wearing panty-liner around Tara, but she quickly tried to clear her mind as Tara slowly opened her eyes. “So good” she said happily, and Willow could only nod in agreement.

“What are you nodding at?” Tara said, rolling her eyes at Willow. “You haven’t even tried yours yet!”

Still unsure of whether she had control over her vocal chords after that brief Tara-show, Willow just nodded again and reached for her cup of hot chocolate. Mimicking Tara’s earlier movements, she blew on the thick brown liquid before taking a slow sip. She allowed it to stay on her tongue for a few moments before finally finding the courage to look the blonde in the eyes as she let the chocolate run filter down her throat. Willow ran the tip of her tongue over her lips, hoping to wipe away any chocolate that might still be there, before taking a deep breath, “Yes, this is the best hot chocolate in the world” she said, in a mock-defeated tone.

Tara was looking slightly more pink than usual, but before Willow had time to reflect on that, the blonde’s face had broken into a wide smile, “I told you so!” Willow took another sip, “This really IS good” she said again, “How come I’ve ever heard of this place before?”

Tara’s eyes seemed to sparkle as she shot back, “You just haven’t been hanging out with the right people”. Still smiling, she took another sip of her own hot chocolate before sitting back in her chair, “But yes, to answer your question which was left unanswered thanks to the goodness of Brito’s hot chocolate,” she tucked a strand of hair which had fallen across her cheek back behind her ear, “Coach Wilkin’s is what you would call a ‘moron’, in simple terms that is. It was his way or the highway, which is why we made complete fools of ourselves at last year’s tournament in Denver. It’s not just that we failed to qualify for the quarters, but it was more about how badly we lost the games that we did play. He’d give us fixed plans to follow, and if a player tried something different she was substituted immediately. I hear he's being replaced this year, and I really hope that's true. Oh, and somehow only the really pretty girls ended up starting”. Tara looked pretty mad by the end of her rant, and Willow realized that she was witnessing another side to Tara’s personality that she hadn’t seen before.

Without thinking, she blurted out, “Well, you must have started every game then”. Willow’s eyes went wide at her own admission, but she didn’t regret her slip when she saw Tara’s frown being replaced by one of the blonde’s lop-sided smiles, which the redhead didn’t believe she saw enough of. She slowly smiled back in return, still watching Tara’s reaction.

Tara chose not to comment on Willow’s statement, and said, “So, I realized yesterday that I don’t know what your chosen major is”. The way Tara phrased it made it sound like the question it was meant as. Willow readjusted herself in her chair, “Art” she said simply. When she noticed Tara’s still enquiring look, she elaborated, “I’m basically studying art and math subjects, for architecture.”

“Wow” the blonde said, slowly nodding her head, and Willow thought that if she looked hard enough, she’d be able to see the wheels turning in Tara’s head. “What kind of architecture are you interested in?”

“I’d like to build homes. I mean, with my parents being in the airline business, I’ve gotten to see a lot of the world, and with that, a lot of beautiful houses around the world.” Tara smiled at that, and Willow continued, “And I think the home is such an important place, you know? For every member of the family. So I’d like to, well, make sure that family’s have a perfect place to share and call home.”

Tara blinked at Willow, and looked at her with an intent expression. A few seconds later she spoke, “You know, that’s a really nice thought you have there. And I think it’s the best reason I’ve ever heard for someone wanting to pursue a line of work.”

Willow blushed at Tara’s compliment, and quickly reached for another sip of her drink, which by now had cooled enough for her to take larger gulps. Putting her cup down, she realized that Tara was still sitting there watching her, so asked “What about you? Writing?”

Tara took a deep breath and shook her head slowly, “Nope. Psychology.”

It was Willow’s turn to look impressed, “Whoa, nice. What kind?”

“Sports Psych.” The blonde said, “Especially with athletes returning to a sport post an injury time off, or ban. I’ve always been interested in the mental aspect of being a professional athlete, which is mainly why I made the choice.

“Interesting” Willow said. “So will you give up the writing once you’ve got your degree?”

“Honestly, I don’t know. I mean, writing comes easily to me, and I’m sure you’ve noticed that the station's pretty flexible with my hours. So I guess it’s just going to boil down to whether I want to devote my life to studying athletes and writing paper after paper on different aspects of sports psychology, or if I actually want to counsel athletes.”

“Can’t you do both?”

“Probably” Tara agreed, “but then again, it comes down to whether I enjoy one more than the other, or both stimulate me equally.” She waved her hand next to her ear, “Too many options!”

Willow downed the last of her cup of hot chocolate, “True, but there’s one thing you have no say in.” Willow waited for a reaction from Tara, and when the blonde arched an eyebrow, she delivered her punch line in the smuggest of tones, “The next rounds on me!”

**************************************************************************************
Forty-five minutes and one more cup of hot chocolate each later, two very stuffed women climbed back into the blonde’s jeep. They’d spent the last three quarters of an hour making lighthearted and random chit-chat, covering safe topics like Susanna’s reply to the thank you message Willow had sent her, the future of Buffy and Zak and Anya and Xander, and the feedback to the concert in LA, which seemed to have reminded Tara that she needed to go into work that afternoon. Even to Willow the blonde had seemed reluctant to actually get up after they’d finished their drinks, and the redhead felt a secret thrill at the knowledge that Tara was enjoying their shared time as much as she was.

Now as the blonde started the engine, she asked Willow “The kids are coming over after school tomorrow. Would you like to join us?”

Out of the corner of her eye she saw the redhead regrettably shake her head, “I can’t. There’s some big shot coming in from Frank O. Gehry & Associates, uhh, the architecture firm?” With her eyes on the road Tara nodded her head, so Willow continued, “Yeah, so this guy’s coming in for a guest lecture, and since he’ll be visiting from noon to 6 p.m, I doubt I’ll be able to make it. Trust me, these big shots never leave when they’re supposed to!”

Even though she felt slightly disappointed, Tara couldn’t help but smile at the child-like displeasure in Willow’s voice. When they pulled up at a redlight, she turned her full attention to the woman in her passenger seat, “Ok, do you have any plans for the weekend?”

Willow’s heart began to race as a sense of optimism filled her soul, “Nope…”

“Well” Tara said, glancing at the steering wheel as she spoke, “Um, I was thinking of taking the kids to the beach this Sunday?” This time Willow was sure Tara was once again looking pinker than usual, but didn’t interrupt the blonde. “I’ve already asked Ahn, and she’s going to ask Xander, and well, I’d like to invite you too.”

When Tara glanced up at Willow the redhead noticed a sense of vulnerablility about the blonde, and couldn’t help but reach out a hand to reassure the other woman. She rested her hand on top of the blonde’s on the gear stick, and giving it a gentle squeeze, said softly, “Sounds like a plan”.

She withdrew her hand as the lights turned green, and Tara cleared her throat before saying, “Good”. She quickly smiled at Willow, “You can ask Buffy and Zak too? I’m sure Cordelia will come along as well, and you can invite anyone else you want?”

Willow shook her head, “Nope, no one else”. Only she knew the truth of her statement.

A few moments of comfortable silence later, Tara pulled up outside Willow’s dorm, and cut the engine. “Well, thanks again for introducing me to the best hot chocolate ever” Willow smiled, not wanting to get out of the jeep.

“Thanks for buying the second round” Tara beamed back.

“So…uhh” Willow searched frantically for something to say, delaying her Tara-jeep time. “I might drop into practice on Thursday?”

She was treated to a lop-sided smile, “I’d like that. Umm, I’ll let you know if there’s a change in practice time?” Willow nodded her head, just as Tara’s phone began to ring. The blonde answered it, “Hey Gabby…yeah, I’ll be there in 15? Ok, see you then…bye.”

Willow took a deep breath, and was about to say her good-bye for the day, when Tara leaned over and wrapped her in a hug. The redhead allowed her own arms to wrap around the blonde’s shoulders, and as she pulled back, her mind was suddenly filled with the memory of Tara walking back to kiss her on the cheek at Susanna’s house in LA. After considering it for the briefest second, Willow paused mid-pulling back from the embrace, and placed a soft kiss on Tara’s cheek. With that, she extracted herself from the car, and turned to looked at the blonde one more time. The smile on Tara’s face nearly took Willow’s breath away, and she just about managed a clumsy wave of her hand, “Bye”.

The blonde turned the key in the ignition, not taking her eyes off Willow. “See you Will…” The redhead watched Tara’s jeep start to roll away, and watched till it was out of sight. “There goes my heart again” she muttered under her breath, turning and walking to her room.

Dibs!
Actually I am suppose to write a paper on JFK (Yes, the president) but I keep getting distracted. But let me tell you, your fic is the best distraction!
Loved how Willow was mesmerized by Tara's pout.
Looking at Xander, she saw that his concern seemed to be mixed with a look that told her he knew what she was doing, and she quickly looked away before he read her mind with that weird power he’d always possessed.

Hehe, Xander the mind-reader.
Finally an author who doesnt think Willow's an art-phobic! Refreshing for a change.
Cant wait for more!
