"That's great, about time they got a woman at the station," Buffy said, smiling.
"Yeah, that's what the guys said, when they saw me," Tara said.
I bet, anyways have you been many place?" Buffy asked, as the evelator doors opened up.
"No, not yet, been busy working to go anywhere," Tara said, stepping off the elevator behinde Buffy.
"If and when you get a day off, here's my number give me a call, and we will hang out, oh and i'll introduce you to my friends," Buffy said, giving her a piece of paper with her number on it.
"Thanks, I'll do that, I better get some sleep before this thing goes off," Tara said, pulling her pager out along with her keys.
"Ok, goodnight Tara," Buffy said, walking away
As Tara enters her apartment, placing her keys in the bowl on her desk. And switching on the living room light, A little white puppy come bounding towards her wagging his tail very happy to see her. She bends down to scoop up the little guy and carries him into the kitchen, where she garb his food dish and fills it with puppy food. Place it and him down on the floor.
“There you go little one,” Tara said, scratching her pups head.
She sat there for a few minutes watching him eat his chow. Then she stands up and heads into her room, taking her long blonde hair down from the ponytail she wore that day. Grabbing her hair brush and brushing the tangles out as she walks into the bath room. Turning the water on so she can take a nice warm bath so she can wash all the black film from her body and the smoky smell out of her hair. Walking back into her bedroom grabbing her robe and taking her clothes off placing them in the hamper by the closet door. Walking back into the bathroom, cutting the water off and hanging her robe up on the back of the door, checking herself out in the full length mirror on how she has buffed up since she become a firefighter. Smiling at the way her body looks in the mirror, she walks over to the tub and steps into the warm water.
“Ahh, now this is relaxing,” Tara said, enjoying the warm water caressing her tired body.
After her bath she went into the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea, to help her relax before she went to bed. She notice her puppy curled up on the couch sound asleep, she grabs one of her favorite romance books and sits down by her pup and read awhile. Her eyes became heavy as she was reading and she falls asleep on the couch with her puppy curled up on her stomach.
Chapter two.
Tara was jolted awake by her pager going off on the table beside her, "Beep beep beep beep!" rattled out of the awkward pager on the table. Most people were blissfully
unaware of its purpose. It certainly wasn’t a high-tech pager or cellular phone; it hardly rated as an old voice pager. She jumps up runs to her bedroom throwing on her clothes. Taking a brush to her hair. After the fifth beep, the miniature speaker tuned to a series of rising and falling notes. A voice followed the tones, declaring the reason for the
racket. "Fire Dispatcher to all Boughton Hill pagers and home monitors. Respond to 2294 Racine Way forest for the smoke-detector activation. On the rangers office building.
Adrenaline shook Tara’s aching muscles and excitement propelled her into action. "Bye
Shilo! Be a good boy" Tara called over her shoulder as she headed for the door. Bumping into Buffy and a redhead girl on her way out.
“Whoa there, killer, where’s the fire?” Buffy asked, steadying herself as Tara ran past.
“Sorry Buffy, it’s at Racine Way forest, got to go bye,” Tara yelled, as she ran towards the elevators.
“Who was she?” asked Willow, turning to see Tara disappear into the elevator.
“That would be the new firefighter, down at the station,” Buffy said, turning back to Willow.
“HMM, she’s cute, straight, but cute,” Willow said, picking up her bag, that she dropped.
“What makes you think she’s straight, Willow?” Buffy asked, looking over at her.
“C’mon, Buffy, look at her she beautiful, there’s no way that she is gay,” Willow said, with a smile.
“Well, Willow, you’ll have to wait until she has a day off to find out,” Buffy said, unlocking her door.
“Why, why do I have to wait?” asked Willow walking into Buffy’s apartment.
“Because, when she gets an off day, were all going to hang out,” Buffy said, winking at her.
“Hey, I saw that you winked,” Willow said.
“Yeah I know, maybe you too, can you know, hook up,” Buffy said, smiling at her.
“What is that suppose to mean?” Willow asked, placing her hands on her hips.
“Oh, you know, it’s just you haven’t had a girlfriend in say 2 years,” Buffy said, teasing her.
“Rub in why don’t you,” Willow said, throwing a dish towel at her.
Tara maclay firefighter. It was her year in the department, and she was now on
duty. As she headed for the fire station, her mind was already processing what she would have to do. Chances are She’d make the first truck out – She lived only 1/2 mile from the station. She pulled into the parking lot, shut off the car, and headed for the door. "Walk, Tara don’t trip
and get hurt," she said to herself. she walked in and saw that another firefighter was already on the radio, answering the call to the dispatcher.
Tara stopped at her locker and pulled out herboots and turnout pants. She kicked off her shoes and slid her feet into the boots. Squatting, she
pulled up the turnout pants, tucked down around the ankles. She slid her arms under the suspenders as she stood up. Other firefighters were coming in now, dressing as she did. Trying to catch a glimpse of what she was wearing under her gear.
"Sorry boy's, not this time," Tara said, smiling at them.
She yanked the hood out of her helmet, shoved her head through it, and pulled it down onto her neck. She threw on the turnout jacket, zipped it up, and in one motion grabbed her helmet and turned to the
first engine
"Oh c'mon Maclay, you always finish dressing before we come in," said Jimmy, winking at her.
"I know, i have to stay 3 steps ahead you guys," Tara said, laughing at him.
"Are you ever going to go out with me?" asked Jimmy.
"Well, Jimmy, what can i say your not my type," Tara said.
A driver was already running the engine, waiting for the crew. Tara jumped in back and began to pull on the air pack hidden in the seat back.
"How many are back there?" the driver asked Tara.
"I saw four," she called back as she tightened the
shoulder straps.
Within seconds, the cab was filling with firefighters. A lieutenant jumped up in the front seat. He looked back at the assembling crew and
said to the driver, "let’s go!" With a nod, the driver pulled the engine slowly onto the front concrete. The lieutenant started to flip on the
lights and stepped on the siren button. As the siren whirled to life, the driver pulled onto the road and accelerated towards 2294 Racine Way forest. The radio came to life: "Fifteen-zero on location
at 2294 Racine Way forset, with smoke showing on the west side. Please dispatch more station so they can help out here."
"Damnit boys, we’re goin’ live!" One of the firefighters shouted in the back seat. The lieutenant glared at him as he keyed the microphone, "Engine 1511 to 15-0." There is always one too eager, the lieutenant thought.
Go ahead 1511."
"Yes, sir, we are in route with a full crew."
"Good. The hydrant you want to hit is on the
left, two houses from the fire."
"Acknowledged." The lieutenant looked back again, stared at the shouter, "Mark, you hit the hydrant. Lee, Scott, you get a handline. Tara, you and me will start on search and rescue." Tara saw everyone nodding as she pulled her mask onto her face. She closed her yes and focused on settling herself down. It was important to keep calm in situations like these; rushing only leads to getting somebody hurt. Search and rescue is one of the hardest things to do, when you have crazy people walking out in the forest trying to take pictures of the fire, but one of the most
rewarding.
She realized that the truck had stopped and the firefighters were climbing out. She followed Lee out and immediately turned away from the fire,
headed for a side compartment. She opened the compartment and pulled out an axe. She then turned to see the lieutenant waiting for her.
Tara nodded and the two faced the forest.
It was a fairly nice forest, except for the pouring smoke and fire pouring out of the tops of the trees. They stared at the smoke as they approached their chief.
"Lieutenant, we have reports of a child still in the ranger building. They have her in the back room of the ranger house, but they dont know where the mother is at."
"Okay. Tara and I are on search; Lee and Scott
are on nozzle."
Good. Go," the chief said. Tara was already headed towards the front door. The hose line team was hooking up their air tanks. Tara was doing
the same as she headed up.
The fiery orange haze lit the dark night brightly, the flickering of the flames casting a shadow over the faces of the firefighters a crowd of onlookers that had assembled to watch the tragedy. Firefighters calmly attended to the blaze, shooting hard jets of water at the burning forest and ranger building, smothering the heat, ending the spectacle, but were they too late for the young woman inside the forest.
