A baby's cry reached the sleeping blonde's ears. She opened her eyes and gazed out the window. All she could see were trees zipping past her at a rapid pace. Her mind started to wander as her eyes focused and the trees seemed to slow.
"What are you doing?" Donald Maclay asked his daughter upon seeing the packed bags on the bed. He clenched his jaw and held his head high to reinforce his intimidating look.
"I-I'm l-leaving." Tara answered in a small voice.
"And where the hell do you think you're going?" He asked, his deep voice rising.
Tara looked down, shrinking back a little. She was scared but knew she had to do this. She was tired, tired of always cleaning and cooking for her father and brother, tired of always taking the blame for any and everything that went wrong in the Maclay household. She was now eighteen and no one could stop her from leaving. She knew what was coming, but the physical pain would pass. "I'm going to live with my sister."
"Your sister is a piece of trash! A troublemaker and a deserter!" His anger turned to furry at the mention of his other daughter. The daughter who's name was to not be mentioned in his presence.
Tara had heard enough, it was one thing to bash her but another to bash her sister. The sister who had always been there for her. She didn't blame her sister for leaving, she couldn't understand why she herself hadn't gone too. Her sister begged her to come with her but Tara had been too scared, scared of what her father might do to her. The girls wrote each other quite frequently, behind her father's back of course, and after two years Tara was finally convinced it wouldn't get better, her father would never change. She mustered all the courage she could. "Don't talk that way about her you asshole!" She yelled and squeezed her eyes shut as a fist collided with her cheek.
"You don't talk that way to me you little bitch! You get your shit and get the hell out of my house!" He yelled to Tara's huddled form on the floor and stomped out of the room.
Tara looked up through her tears, half shocked, her father had actually told her to leave. She never thought it would be so easy, she couldn't help the smile that formed on her face. She was so happy it was over she didn't feel the pain in her cheek, she quickly picked up her bags and left the house, not saying a word to anyone.
Tara shook her head and smiled. She finally felt free and couldn't be happier. Her thoughts drifted to her sister, her half sister to be precise. Her father had cheated on her mother around the same time she was conceived. Her father had actually cried and begged for her mother's forgiveness, and having the big heart she did, her mother forgave him. The other woman didn't want a baby and was planning to have an abortion. Hearing this, her mother had offered to take the baby in, she had said the baby was innocent and should be given the chance to live. So that's what she did, she raised the baby as if it were her own, she also grew to love it as if it were her own. After her mother passed away, her sister was miserable with the man she refused to call her father. She stayed for a while, wanting to be there for Tara, but it got to be too much and she left.
Tara was jostled from her thoughts as the train started to slow, she smiled as she saw a sign that read 'Welcome to Sunnydale'.
Once the train was completely stopped, people left their seats. Tara stood, straightened her ankle length skirt, and grabbed the two bags she had brought, she pulled the strap to one over her shoulder and carried the other in her hand. She stepped off the train and immediately saw her sister. She took in her sister's appearance which was now very different from the one she remembered. Her father had always made them both dress like "ladies". Her sister always gave him a fit about it, she smiled as her sister was now able to be herself. She quirked an eyebrow at what her sister's "self" actually was. Black boots, black leather pants, a tight red tee shirt, topped off by a black leather jacket. She thought about her sister's personality, smirking at how the outfit did in fact suite her. She neared her sister and before she knew it she was in a bone crushing hug.
"God I've missed you Tare." The brunette said as she hugged Tara.
"You're gonna miss me more if you suffocate me." Tara teased.
"Sorry." She said as she released her sister. She took the bag from
Tara's hand and gave a frown. "You okay?" She asked as she gently touched the blonde's bruised cheek.
"Better than okay." Tara beamed.
The brunette gave her sister another hug, this time without so much squeeze. "I love you Tare."
"I love you too Faith." She said as she pulled away, smiling.
"Lets get out of here." Faith said before heading with Tara out of the train station.
They walked through the parking lot to where Faith's beat up 86 black Mustang sat. Tara raised her eyebrows upon seeing the mud that was splattered all over the car. "What happened?"
Faith glanced at her sister to see what she was talking about, she chuckled as she realized. "Oh...me and Nick like to drive in the mud, or slide around in it."
"You don't get stuck?" Tara asked in wonder.
"No...you have to know what you can and can't drive in, then, you're all set." Faith opened the trunk and threw Tara's bags in it. "You can come with us next time."
Tara stood a bit wide eyed before responding. Going on a joy ride through mud wasn't something she would normally do. She really didn't normally do anything because of her dad's tight leash around her neck. Tara's expression grew serious as she thought about how she could now actually have a little fun. "Yeah, that would be fun." She said, hoping she wouldn't regret her words. She walked to the passenger door and got in the car. She jumped as the overly loud engine revved up. She wanted to cover her ears but decided against it. The way the car sounded, she was worried her freedom might end too soon. She gripped the handle on the door as Faith slammed her foot down on the gas pedal.
Faith laughed at her sister. "Ease up Tare, I know how to drive."
The blonde gave an unsure smile as she kept her eyes glued to the road, however, she didn't release her death hold on the handle.
"Ready for school?" Faith asked, trying to take Tara's mind off of her fear.
"Yeah, I can't wait." She answered honestly.
"I might be too if it weren't for the stupid schools merging. Last year sucked. The people at Sunnydale High need to take the sticks out of their asses." Faith said receiving an awkward look from Tara. "What?"
"You're just so...open. I don't remember you talking like this much, unless you were mad."
"Yeah well, I'm not around that stupid piece of shit known as dad. I can be me, just like now you can be you." Faith smiled.
"Yes well, not sure that me is quite like that." Tara said as she blushed a little at the thought of using those type of words.
Faith grinned at Tara's statement, she then punched the gas to go past the slow driver in her way.
The mustang pulled into the parking lot in front of the older looking apartment building.
"Here we are." Faith said as she opened her door and stepped out. She turned and didn't see her sister getting out so she ducked down to look at Tara who still sat in the car, and still clutching the door handle. "You gonna sit in there all night? Cause if you want it that bad, I'll take you for another ride."
"Uh..no." The blonde said as she rapidly left the car, causing a laugh from Faith. She stretched her body as her eyes roamed the front of the building. Most people would have scoffed at the building but Tara thought it was great. She didn't really care what place she lived in, after spending so many years with her dad, even living in a car would have excited her.
Faith appeared beside her, carrying both bags.
"I know it's not the best but..."
"It's great!" The blonde interrupted ecstatically.
Faith shrugged as she and her sister started walking to her apartment. Once they reached the door, Faith unlocked it and took a step back so the blonde could enter first.
Tara smiled and went inside. Her smile was short lived as a big dog approached her and started sniffing her. She yelled before running behind her sister. "Y-You didn't say anything about that!" She said as she pointed around Faith to the dog.
Faith giggled as the dog jumped up on her. "I have a dog, there, now you know."
Tara rolled her eyes as she started to follow her sister into the room. She was still behind Faith, practically glued to her back. Fear flashed across her face as the dog started to try and get around Faith, curious of the new person.
"It's okay, I promise he won't bite you. He only bites when I tell him to."
Tara slowly inched around her sister and closer to the dog.
"Bite!" Faith yelled causing Tara to leap backwards and almost fall on her butt. "Just kidding, he won't bite." Faith laughed.
Tara glared at Faith, once her heart beat returned to normal she walked closer to the dog, she held her breath as the dog sniffed her hand, exhaling when she realized she still had her hand. Hesitantly, she placed her hand on his head and rubbed his brown coat. "What's his name?" She asked as she started to relax.
"Well, I haven't had him long, he seems to like shithead so that's what I call him." Faith grinned when the dog sprinted to her, wagging his tail.
"That's no name." She said rolling her eyes. "So where do I sleep?" She asked, dropping the subject, she knew she would have to give the poor dog a decent name.
"Oh right. I'll give you the tour!" Faith looked around before pointing her finger. "That's the kitchen, that's bedroom one, and bedroom two, and the bathroom, and this is the living room."
Tara giggled. "Nice tour, thanks. So am I bedroom one or two?"
"Two." Faith said as she picked up one of her sister's bags and headed to bedroom two.
The blonde followed her sister. She stopped at the doorway to get a good look at her room. Her eyes went wide, she blushed and immediately looked down, causing her blonde hair to cover her face.
Faith smiled as she turned to the blonde, her brow furrowed trying to figure out why tara was acting that way. She glanced around the room as the realization hit her. "Sorry...I like pictures you know?" She said as she started to take the pictures of naked women off the wall.
Tara gave a nod but didn't dare look up.
"Okay...your innocent eyes can now look." Faith teased.
"Sorry." Her blush deepened as she lifted her head to look at Faith.
"Hey now...you're not with Donald, you're with me. No apologies needed here." Her tone was serious.
The blonde gave a shy nod and placed her bag on the bed.
"When you're done, I'll be out there, we can talk." Faith added as she left the room.
Tara unpacked her things and made her way into the living room where her sister sat on the couch. "So tell me about school, I can't wait to go." Tara said as she bounced a little in her seat.
"Well it's school, not much to tell, there's school work." Faith said, a little confused by her sister's question.
"Oh come on, dad took me out of school my senior year, I feel likes it's gonna be the first time. Amuse me?" Tara said wanting to know everything about her new school.
"Well, the people suck, I already told you that. Okay...not everyone but most. Snobby rich kids think they're better than everyone. Especially this one girl, Buffy, what the hell kind of name is Buffy anyway?" Faith looked expectantly at her sister. Before Tara could reply she started talking. "And then there's her little friends, all just like her. If it wasn't for Mr. Lang I would have so kicked her ass last year."
Tara shifted uncomfortably, this wasn't what she wanted to hear. She wanted to know the good things, not just the bad. "What exactly happened with Buffy?"
"Nothing particular, see, I went to Blake, Blake and Sunnydale high....very different. Blake contained all the normal people, Sunnydale contains all of the airheaded people that think they are God. The two schools have never liked each other. Ever since we merged, the Sunnydale kids have been talking shit, thinking it'll have no effect, but it does and some of them have scars to prove it...they just don't learn."
"Scars?" Tara asked, she wasn't a fighter and hoped she would never have to be in that situation.
"Yeah, there's been a lot of fights." She looked at her sister who carried a scared expression. "Don't worry Tare, if anyone messes with you, I'll personally fuck them up."
The blonde gave her sister a small smile. School was beginning to sound not so exciting.
