Summary: This fic is totally AU. Tara is accepted to a art / computer school, where she meets Willow. They become instant friends and go through school together. But over the years, their friendship starts to turn into much more.
Chapter 1
"What did I get myself into?"
Tara Maclay looked out the window of the bus and tried to remember all the things that got her to where she was now. She loved art. Always had. She had wanted to pursue a career after high school in art. That's how she heard of Gordon Computer Institute. They had offered her a full paid scholarship to do what she loved. The only catch was that she had to do it by using a computer. "Computer Graphics Interface" is what she was to be learning and GCI had the best CGI department anywhere.
"I guess I'll learn to like computers," Tara told her father when he asked how she was going to pay for college. That's when she told him about the scholarship. She didn't care if he approved, she just wanted to get away from home. And away was what she was. GCI was on the other side of the country.
She was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn't notice the bus pulling to a stop and people filing out.
"Hey, you gonna get off or you just gonna room here?" A girl asked her, snapping her out of her thoughts.
"Huh? Oh, I'm s-s-sorry. I w-was just..." Tara realized that she was the only one still on the bus other than the girl.
"That's okay. I think we're all a little nervous. I'm Willow, by the way." Willow replied as she and Tara stepped off the bus. She pushed her short red hair behind her ear as she extended her hand for Tara to shake.
"Tara," she replied, reaching out to take Willow's hand. 'Wow, one day on campus and I've already made a friend' Tara thought to herself as they made their way in the reception building. 'Maybe this won't be that bad after all.'
Chapter 2
Willow and Tara stuck by each other all through their in-processing at GCI, and came to know a lot about each other. Willow was at GCI also on a scholarship, but not for CGI. She was there to become a computer programmer.
"Hacker is such a strong word. I prefer "accidental info-finder-gal", Willow whispered to Tara after explaining how GCI had heard about her in the first place. Apparently, Willow had gotten into a little trouble at home when she "accidentally" stumbled on some info about the Mayor's drug ring.
"When the FBI asked how I found out I had to tell them, but I didn't get into a lot of trouble, mostly just had to recreate the database to make it harder for hacker's to get into. No big really. That's when GCI called me," Willow finished telling Tara as they walked from the cafeteria.
"Wow. That's r-really cool. I'm not r-really big info-gal when it comes to c-computers. I'll be glad to k-know how to turn it on," Tara laughed as she and Willow picked up their schedules from the main office.
"Well, you can always ask me if you need some extra help. So what classes did you get?" Willow asked as they sat down on the grass outside.
"Just a bunch of computer intro classes, math, and labs. How about you?" Tara asked Willow.
"Well, pretty much the same thing, except mine are advanced computer classes. Hey, maybe we can be study-buddies or something!?!" Willow jumped up and down at the thought of studying with Tara. There was just something about her that she couldn't put her finger on. She was so easy to hang out with.
"That's sounds great. A-and who knows what might happen over the course of the time we're here," Tara replied, receiving a smile from Willow.
Chapter 3
Little did they know how much truth that would hold. The two were literally inseparable. When they weren't in class, the two were right next to each other studying, talking, studying, hanging out, and studying. Over the course of the next two years the girls were at GCI, they became best friends, knowing just about everything there was to know about each other. It was a sad day when school was over.
"I can't believe I'm leaving," Tara told Willow. They were curled up on Willow's bed listening to the radio. Tara was leaving today. With graduation over, she had to go to her new job in New York. It was a great job, she knew it, but leaving her best friend was the hardest thing she thought she would ever have to do.
"I know, but we'll still be able to see and talk to each other. I mean, you'll be in New York, and I'll be in Georgia...but we can visit each other all the time... and there is email...and ...and phones... and ...and ..." Willow trailed off when she realized she was babbling through her tears. Truth be told she was just as torn up about Tara leaving. She was trying to be brave for the both of them, but wasn't having much luck. She had come to know, trust and rely on Tara, and now that they were moving to different parts of the country, the thought alone brought tears to her eyes.
"Oh, Wil, don't cry." Tara said as she pulled Willow into a hug, oblivious to the fact that she was crying just as much as Willow was. "We'll get through this, just like we get though everything else," Tara said pulling back from the embrace to look Willow in the eyes. "Just knowing that you believe in me gives me the strength to know that we will be okay with this. And I believe in you, so we can both know it will be alright." Tara said, wiping the tears away from Willow's face with her thumbs.
"We can do this," Willow relied. She placed her forehead on Tara's and looked into her eyes. At that moment she knew that no matter what, this woman would never leave her. That it was all going to be okay. 'I'll never leave you either' Willow thought to herself, and she and Tara both closed their eyes and savored the moment between the two of them. 'Never', they both thought to themselves.
5 months later...
"Hello? Rosenberg residence", a woman said as she picked up the phone.
"Hi, Mrs. Rosenberg. It's me, Tara," Tara answered in to the receiver. "I was wondering if Willow was there".
"Oh, yes, hello, Tara. It's great to hear from you again. Yes, Willow is here. She is in her room. Do you want me to get her?" Mrs. Rosenberg asked. She had always like Tara, ever since Willow started telling her mother about all the wonderful things she and Willow did while at school. The first time they met it was at graduation, but Sheila Rosenberg felt like Tara was one of her own the way Willow had talked about her.
"Um, sure, but I wanted to talk to you first. Is everything ready for tomorrow?" Tara asked Mrs. Rosenberg. Tara had been planning the surprise ever since she had heard Willow talk about going home for the holidays.
"Oh, yes, Tara. She has no clue whatsoever," Sheila whispered into the receiver. She knew Willow was in the other room, but did it just in case her daughter walked in.
"Great. This is gonna be the biggest surprise. I haven't seen her since graduation. I hope things turn out great," Tara tried hard to keep her enthusiasm down. She would surprise Willow by showing up at her house, and she hoped she would be received with open arms. 'Why am I so happy and anxious to see her?' Tara wondered. 'I mean, yeah, I haven't seen her in months, but...' Tara shrugged the thought off and dismissed the idea.
"Willow! Phone!!" she heard Mrs. Rosenberg yell out as she was pulled from her thoughts.
"Hello? Willow replied when she picked up the phone. She was hoping it was Tara on the phone. She hadn't talked to her since yesterday and was wondering why she hadn't called yet. She was late, albeit only by 5 minutes, but late nonetheless.
"Hey you sexy redhead you!" Tara giggled as she replied to Willow. 'She always did like my quirky sense of humor' Tara thought to herself.
"Tara? HEY!! I'm so glad it's you! I thought you weren't gonna call because I looked up and it was 8:05 and you normally call at 8:00 and I was sad because I wouldn't get to talk to you today, and I thought that something must be wrong or you were hurt or...or... what is so funny? Oh, yeah. Me. Babbling. Again. Okay, shutting up now." Willow finally ended her babble when she heard Tara laughing very loudly on the other end of the phone.
"Sorry. Didn't mean to laugh. It's just Willow-babble is so cute..." Tara replied when Willow finally ended her babble out of breath.
"Now you're just trying to make me feel better. Anyway, I have so much to tell you..." Willow pouted, before jumping into another long rant about life at home.
