Re: Update

Postby Artemis » Sun Dec 12, 2004 7:06 am

Hah! Anya's always good for getting sudden bursts of laughter from me. I loved her explanation of how she knew she was in love - feeling miserable and sick, she sure has a unique perspective on things (accurate, if you think about it, just most people wouldn't quite put it like that). I'm a bit worried that Glory and Cordy are tossing around Tara's secret, even if they do probably know nothing and are just spreading rumour out of vindictiveness.

Speaking of, we've got Glory and Cordy as (ahem) Ladies of Negotiable Affection, and Madam Darla running the place - I'm surprised anyone dares set foot across the threshold! That's a collection of acid tongues the like of which hasn't been seen since Vasquez's motion tracker started going off the scale in Aliens.

I wonder if that rumour will reach Willow's ears? Granted she's not likely to stop in at Darla's to pass the time, but she's got a knack for hearing the local gossip, to judge by how easily she picked up the lay of the land over cards the night before.

What's she talking to Donnie about? Is she collecting information, or has she already hatched the makings of a save-the-day scheme? She knows that Donnie's involved in the goings-on of the Pathetic Posse, if more as a victim than a co-conspirator at this stage - he could have a part to play in whatever Will's got up her sleeve.

That moment between her and Tara was very sweet, Tara immediately showing her concern both for Willow's wellbeing on hearing of her 'accident', and noticing her self-deprecating remark and trying to soothe her. It seems like she's more confident when Willow's right there - it's more once she goes off to think on her own, all her worries and questions about being in love with an alleged male surface. Well, it seems she's facing up to her feelings for said alleged male, which is good - Anya even helped her think things through :) Now, what will she do? And is she ever in for a surprise!

Great work, thanks :)

Can't wait to find out what Will and Donnie are discussing. I loved the interaction between W/T... the all encompassing care and compassion that came through Taras words, actions and thoughts. Anya defending Tara with the conversion story was hilarious :lol . Now Glory and Cordelia being whores... that so fits :rofl !

Howdy, partner!

I is been meaning to tell yous that this here is a mighty fine piece of fiction you has gone and wrote!

But, thing is, me and the gals are almost out of both whisky and sarsparilla, and truth be told, we was fixin' to mosy on over to yonder brothel without you, since we'e kinda lonely out here all alone without miss Tara and miss Anya och mr eh.. miss.. eh Willow. But maybe if you was to make an update we wouldn't mind waiting for ya a while longer...?

I don't mean to be rude or nothin' but the gals are getting a bit rowdy with all the excitment of not knowing what's coming, and I'm afraid it might lead to gunfire and fornication and gamblin' if there's not a new chapter real soon...

We don't like that sheriff Warren fella much, though, no siree! Me and the gals wanted to kindly offer to shoot him off for ya, free of charge? We don't like the way he behaves around the ladies and we sure wouldn't want miss Amb... eh, miss Tara end up marryin' that up-to-no-good skunk, do we?

Anyways, a big round of yihah's! for your fine work from the gals, and the cattle of course!:sheep :moo :clap :bounce :bow

Chapter 8 feedback

Postby tarawhipped » Fri Jan 07, 2005 11:51 pm

Howdy Kittens! Coming up next: the much anticipated, long awaited, highly touted, and probably WAY overblown Willow/Donnie talk! But wait! There's more! Feedback responses to chapter 8! Thank you for ordering--er, reading!

:p -Cam

WickedReds: Glad you liked the flirting and introduction of Anya. I also commend you on your fine spelling, Gina. Thanks!

EasierSaid: Hey! Watch where you're firing that pistol! Glad you liked the Willow/Tara interaction...they will be getting some time together in another couple of chapters, but it's good to know that their unspoken feelings are coming through. Thanks Heather!

wimpy0729: Yeah, Wimpy, I think the Smutbunny Ranch would be a much nicer environment than Madam Darla's. So happy Anya was a hit--she's so much fun. Where Willow went is coming up next!

pipsberg: Thanks Pipsqueak! You leaving me feedback is the greatererestest...er...it's cool, dude. I knew people would understand the love = nausea thing, but I still wanna hear the sangria story sometime! :wink

robotguru: Hey! I'll have you know I take very good care of Tara! :flirt And I only torture and confuse readers...the characters are all fully aware of what's happening. Thanks Chris!

silentinformer:Thanks for reading...Willow and Donnie's big talk coming up next!

eirnlove:Awww...thank you! More on the way...

hotydnic: Yes, Anya does care for Tara in her own abrasive way. Glad you liked it, and thanks for waiting.

Artemis: Hiya Chris. Willow and Donnie's talk is up next, so I'll just let you read it. I like that you mentioned Tara's changes in confidence/confort level when she's alone or with "Will." I see her as naturally more contemplative about the situation when alone, but when she's with Willow, she lets that analytical side go in favor of just feeling/reacting.

hermitfish: Cyd! Glad I helped you relive a cherished childhood memory.:p And your poem! *sigh* Though it had me humming the Green Acres theme for days afterward...don't know if that was intentional or not.

Viximon: Thank you so much! Very good to know that everyone likes the thought of Cordy and Glory as whores. More is coming right up!

meretricious: OMG Mary...I didn't even realize until you said something, but she IS Nellie Olson! Ooooh, how I despised Nellie with her damn Shirley Temple ringlets and picking on Laura! And of COURSE Harmony's there too! As for ornery Tara, she won't be appearing for a little while yet. Gotta build up the anticipation, ya know?

Rhiannon9891: It's so cool you caught the Nellie Olson thing too...makes me wish I'd actually planned it! Glad you like Donnie...and I hope this update continues to win people over to him. Thanks, Rhiannon!

trashxmyxheart: Thank you so much, and more up next!

behindhereyes: Will and Donnie's talk is finally arriving. Very glad that Tara's feelings came through...she had to make a pretty instant impression to convince Willow to stay, so it's nice to know you liked it. Thanks Kim!

Idgie: Thanks Idgie. Yes, no gratuitous use of the phrase "vindictive whore"...she really is one! No Tara and Will in this next one, but soon.

lil wiccan: Thanks for the feedback, Thea...more next.

JustSkipIt: Of course Harmony can be a whore! What else would she be in this town? :lol

alysagoddess85: Thank you Mel...glad you liked the new additions to the town, and I hope they live up to expectations when I actually write them.

the hero factor: Thank you so much for your feedback. I'm a big fan of uber fics too, and playing with the supporting cast is always fun.

Tempest Duer: I like the idea that as self-absorbed as Anya could be, she often was aware of things that no one else was, so it seemed fitting that she should help Tara figure things out. Thanks for the feedback!

Still Waters T: Aww Liv! Thank you! So you think Willow might have a shady past? Hmmm... *heehee* I will say nothing!

Reallybigpineapple: :rofl Your feedback was fantastic...definitely helped me get back in the saddle and quick draw a new update. Thanks for your comments, and I hope you like this next bit.

Feedback: Throws head back and screams YESSS!!!

Summary: A redheaded stranger rides into a town full of trouble and meets a blonde barmaid. Can they save each other and the town?

Setting: AU (the Old West)

Chapter 9

Willow and Donnie rode along in silence, the former lost in her thoughts, the latter patiently waiting for his passenger to say something. Willow had worked through the impending conversation in her head for a good fifteen minutes before finally knocking on the shuttered doors of the saloon, but now that she had to actually say it, her nerves had her twisted in knots. Her brief conversation with Tara had helped steel her resolve, but almost completely unhinged her as well.

‘Damn blue eyes got my brain all muddled…so what if she was concerned…and kind…and lookin’ like a vision standing there with the sun streamin’ in and makin’ her all glowy-like—DAMMIT! Enough of this poetic hogwash…you just gotta explain the situation to Donnie, convince him to get outta town and take Tara with him, and then it’s back on the trail to finish what you started.’

Willow shook her head and muttered ‘stupid’ under her breath. Donnie cast a bemused sideways glance at his companion but made no comment. The redhead looked over and smiled sheepishly before again furrowing her brow at how to address the subject. Attaining Xander’s help had been a simple matter by comparison.

“So you want me to stall,” he’d summarized.

“Is that a problem?”

“Nope. If it helps you in your noble, yet incredibly foolhardy decision to thwart the Sheriff’s plans—and thank you for sparing me the details—then I’m all for it. But Will? These guys are seriously dangerous…are you sure you know what you’re doing?”

“Sure I’m sure. Don’t I look sure?”

He’d looked doubtful, but shrugged his shoulders and agreed to take his time making the repairs. He ruefully admitted to Will that no one would question his incompetence, and that it could take as much or as little time as needed.

“One more thing, Xander. Do not under any circumstances let any open flames near that cart, okay? Cause…you know…it’s wood and…it has sentimental value.”

Again the carpenter had agreed without questioning, and Willow had left for the saloon.

“You know, Will, we ain’t goin’ all that far. If you got somethin’ to say, you might wanna get talkin’ already.”

Startled out of her daze, Willow looked around at the unfamiliar terrain they traversed. At some point past town they had come to a small river, which the road crossed and ran parallel to. The open plain to the south gave way on the north side of the stream to thick prairie grasses that stood taller than a man, obstructing the redhead’s view even from her height on the wagon’s perch. The redhead had given up on looking at the scenery and retreated into her thoughts, and was now caught wondering where the trees had come from. To her left, Donnie chuckled.

“It ain’t much, I know, but it’s the closest thing to a forest we got around here.”

“It’s pretty,” Willow apprised. An instant later her eyes widened as she realized what she’d said. ‘Boys don’t say trees are pretty—pull yourself together!’ Dropping her voice a fraction she amended, “I mean, it’s a pretty good forest, you know, except for the lack of trees.”

Donnie grinned and snorted before again turning to contemplate Willow curiously. He shook his head a fraction and cleared his throat.

“So what’s on your mind?”

Willow shifted on the seat and took a deep breath.

“Right. Me with the talking, cause I said I wanted to talk and that’s why I’m here—well, not here as in town, which we aren’t even in anymore—but here here, riding along with you, and—say, this is a real nice wagon you got, by the way…why I’ll bet you could ride this clear ‘cross the country without busting a single spoke.”

“Will? No offense, but you’re babbling.”

“Am I? I mean, yes…I am…I do that. Some people tell me it’s endearing.”

“I find it kinda irritating myself,” Donnie proclaimed with a grin.

“Okay, then I’ll get to the point,” Willow said. “You ever thought about loadin’ up this here wagon and just…going…somewhere?”

“This is your point?” Donnie asked with more than a little confusion.

“I’m working up to it,” Willow assured him.

“Go…somewhere?” Donnie repeated.

“Yeah, you know…somewhere…somewhere that’s not Dusty Hollow?”

“Why would I wanna leave Dusty Hollow? I got a business here. I got family and friends.”

“Well, sure you do. I’m not suggesting you go off and leave your family. You should take Tara too.”

“But…wait a minute…we don’t wanna go nowhere,” Donnie protested.

“Donnie,” Willow began, her voice soft but firm. “Sometimes it isn’t a matter of what you want to do. Sometimes it’s a matter of what’s best…for everyone.”

Donnie pulled hard on the reins and the wagon lurched to a stop. He turned to fully face Willow, anger and not a little fear evident in his eyes.

“Just what the hell is goin’ on here, Will? First you ask me if I’m thinkin’ about leavin’ town, and now you’re tellin’ me I should take my sister and get out?”

“It’s the Sheriff,” Willow ruefully admitted with a sigh. Before she realized what was happening, Donnie had stood and grabbed her by the lapels, yanking her upright.

“Are you workin’ for Warren?!” he snarled, his face inches from her own. “You tell that bastard he ain’t runnin’ the Maclays outta town, you got it?!”

“I’m…not,” Willow gasped as she desperately tried to keep her toes in contact with the wagon below her. “Donnie…I…wanna…help.”

Donnie released his hold and the redhead collapsed on the seat with a thump. As she straightened her jacket, Donnie hopped off the wagon and began pacing alongside it, nervously raking one hand through his short hair. Willow carefully climbed down and walked around the back of the cart to face the young man, who stopped walking and looked at her suspiciously.

“You really don’t work for Mears? Or the Mayor?”

“I don’t, Donnie…honest. But I overheard some things—some pretty rotten things—and I really think it’d be best if you cleared outta town as soon as possible.”

“No,” Donnie stated flatly, shaking his head for emphasis. “They ain’t getting’ rid of me. They’ll have to kill me first.”

“They will,” Willow stated with finality, locking eyes with Donnie.

The young man exhaled deeply and leaned back against the wagon. He took off his hat and picked at the brim.

“Well, ain’t that the damnedest thing,” he quietly said after a moment’s pause.

“That’s not all,” Willow continued hesitantly. She waited until Donnie had looked back up and she knew she had his attention. “They’re gonna take the saloon—”

“You mean they’re gonna try,” Donnie insisted defiantly, curling his hands into fists. “My Pa built that saloon, and I’ll burn it to the ground before I let Wilkins get his grubby paws on it!”

“But—”

“But nothing, Will. I ain’t runnin’ from them. They been pushin’ folks around long enough, but they ain’t gonna push me no more! I’m gonna stay and fight ‘em til them or me is in a pine box.”

“And what then, Donnie?” Willow demanded, marching up to stand in front of the enraged man. While the redhead admired Donnie’s courage, she was uncomfortably aware of what his recklessness could lead to. “Have you thought about that? What’s gonna happen to Tara if you go off and get yourself killed?”

The young man opened his mouth to speak, paused, and shut it again. Willow could almost see the wheels turning in his head as he contemplated the question.

“Tara can take of herself,” he finally said with a touch of sadness, bowing his head. “Hell, if anything she’ll be better off not having to look after me.”

“She won’t be better off, Donnie,” Willow snapped bitterly. “She’ll be an unmarried woman with no family, no property, and no money. No one will be able to stop them.”

“Stop who?” Donnie demanded, the panic seeping into his voice matching that of his expression, which grew darker as Willow averted her gaze and he realized. “What are they plannin’ on doin’ to Tara?”

“They’re gonna give her to someone called ‘Madam Darla’,” she said quietly.

Donnie paled for a split second before going beet red with rage. He turned sharply and drove his fist into the sidewall of the wagon, splintering the wood. He leaned heavily against the cart, staring at his bloodied knuckles while Willow moved closer and spoke gently.

“I understand you wanting to stand up to them…I really do. But sometimes the deck is just too stacked, and it’s better to cut your losses and run. There’s no shame in it, Donnie.”

The young man was silent for a long time, and Willow was almost satisfied that she’s gotten through to him.

“I ain’t goin’ nowhere,” he said at last through clenched teeth. “If I run, they’re just gonna go after someone else, and it’ll never stop. Someone’s gotta stand up to them, and as I see it, it might as well be me.”

Willow opened her mouth to protest, but Donnie silenced her with a raised hand and a shake of his head.

“I’m much obliged for your concern, Will, but my mind’s made up. I’m staying and that’s all there is to it. But…I’m gonna need your help with something.”

“Name it,” Willow replied, feeling simultaneously defeated and inspired by the young man’s resolve.

“I need you to help me convince Tara to leave town.”

That was very good. Not over the top (a definite concern once people git ta confrontin'), very realistic interaction considering that the two never really spoke on the show and you managed to take care a lot of plot points without overloading or underwhelming. Your descriptions of the two's movements, Donnie hopping down from the wagon, etc were fantastic. I've told you before, but reading your work is like watching a great, entertaining movie, and I really don't blink the entire time I'm reading. I might miss something fantastic.

just remember cam, nellie olsen eventually married that nice jewish guy and mellowed out a little, there may be hope for anya yet.

you and pips both updating tonite, yay!, and i'm noticing a little parallel fanfic going on here, ignorant times, unempowered women taking what control they can, crossdressing willow-no wonder you fight like sisters.

glad willow got to the point with donnie, in her own way and time, since they both want to protect tara they should make great allies, but i think tara will want her own input. and willow worried about fire near her cart-i'm thinking explosives, and potentially usefull explosives, like maybe the mayor will turn into a giant snake and they'll lure him to a boobie-trapped library.....or you know, some other explosion.. mary

Cam,

Wow! So happy to see you update this lovely story! I think it's great, and so typically Willow to take a half hour to lead up to tell Donnie what's on her mind. I really like their interaction and seeing the mutual concern for Tara. As I think I mentioned before, Donnie turned from bad to good in my eyes and I like him even more after this update.

I can't wait to see Willow rushing in, with Donnie's backing, and saving the day for Tara. Loved it Cam and can't wait for more!

Why do I suspect that Tara's attitude is pretty much going to mirror Donnie's? Though she's probably already worked out the details herself, without having to have Will explain them, the ultimate decision of "I ain't runnin'," seems likely. As I said before, for once Tara and Donnie seem like they're actually related, rather than Donnie having missed out on all the good genes. So much for the simple solution, though.

It's quite an achievement (kudos to you, in other words) that I don't want Donnie to end up in that pine box. Though I kind if imagine he'll find plenty of well-meaning but dumb ways to get himself pine-boxed in defence of Tara.

As for Will's cart, with the wood of 'sentimental value'... awesome :D

heh, sorry for my bad Western :p Whereas i gotta wonder how Willow will go about convincing Tara to leave, i gotta think that Willow will be about as succesful as Donnie was.

Anyways, great update.

Good update...it's nice to see Donnie with something resembling a spine. Of course, I don’t think he has the scheming down to overcome the sheriff and the mayor...but what are cute little crossdressing redheads for anyway? :) I fall in line with the others thinking that Tara is not moving one inch from defending their property, Donnie, etc. I think it will be fun to watch Will try to convince her though. Splendid.
