Note: Thank you for the feedback, Wired Vixen.

Note2: I had written out Tara’s thoughts, but decided to save them for another time. Hope I didn’t disappoint any of you. Thanks for reading.

Chapter Three

~~

Firm knocks awoke Willow from her slumber. The doctor hurried down the stairs and peeked through the eyepiece. With a small grumble, the redhead opened the door and wasn’t surprised to see her mentor standing on her front porch.

“Did I wake you?” He observed her tousled hair and tired eyes, and answered his own question.

“Coffee?” Willow mumbled, allowing the older man to step into the foyer.

“Oh, yes,” Giles handed over one of the hot styrofoam cups before taking a seat on the couch. “How was your interview?”

“Interview?” Lips poised above the steaming cup, Willow frowned.

“With Riverside. Your cellular phone was out of range nearly all day yesterday, so I left a message on your machine.”

Willow saw the blinking light on her answer machine and grimaced. “Huh.”

“You didn’t listen to it?” Giles’ forehead creased as he regarded the young woman across from him. “Where were you yesterday?” He watched her eyes briefly dart around the room.

“I won’t lie,” she shrugged, knowing Giles was already aware of what she had spent her day doing.

With an sigh, Giles stood, hands in pockets, and gazed through the open curtains. “There are reasons for me not wanting you there, Willow.”

“What reasons?” The doctor asked, noting the plural use. “Giles?” She probed when he didn’t respond right away.

“Pines View does not have the best reputation when it comes to its treatment policies. And their admission policies aren’t any better.” He looked over his shoulder to make sure Willow was listening, although he knew she was.

“What do they do?” An edge worked its way into her tone.

“The question is, what won’t they do?” The older man rubbed at his forehead as he turned to look at his protege. “There have often been rumors about bribery, forced drug treatment, overdoses, electroshock. I’ve known too many colleagues who’ve those themselves in that place.”

“What about the government? Are they doing anything?”

“There has never been enough evidence for a solid conviction.” Reclaiming his place on the couch, Giles used a handkerchief to clean his glasses. “Now you see why I don’t want you going back there.” He straightened his glasses and placed them back on his face as he waited for Willow to process what he had told her.

“I can’t just walk away, Giles. Not now.” Willow finally responded, watching the man’s face fall slightly.

Giles knew there wasn’t anything else he could say to persuade the redhead. “I can’t say that I’m happy, but if you’re sure Willow.” He saw the beginnings of resolve form on her face, and nodded. “I should go.” Leaving his untouched coffee on the table, the older man moved toward to door.

“Giles.” Willow called after the retreating man. “Thanks for telling me. I’ll be careful, don’t worry.”

“Just be careful of who you trust, Dr. Rosenberg.” With that, the elder doctor left.

Willow stared at the closed door for several seconds as she finished her coffee. The bitter taste of the black liquid matched the feeling she had when she thought of the hospital. But even after two visits, she found herself unable to abandon her reason for going to Pines View. She had set out to help, and now she was even more determined to finish her task.

~~

Arriving earlier than expected, Willow walked the main hall of the hospital, cautious of her surroundings. Other than a brief “hello”, she hadn’t said much to any of the hospital staff members, but smiled patiently as she waited for one of the orderlies to unlock the door.

One of the long ceiling lights was dimmer than the others and blinking off and on when Willow entered the room. The doctor found Tara curled up on her thin mattress, facing the door and sleeping.

The blonde’s eyebrows twitched, squeezing the otherwise smooth forehead until tiny lines creased the skin. Willow paused in the doorway and thought about leaving. If she left she wouldn’t be able to see Tara until Monday because Pines View did not allow weekend visits unless it was an emergency. Briefly, she wondered if she would be able to argue her way through the door if she showed up Saturday morning, but thought otherwise. Arguing would only draw unwanted attention.

“How long has she been asleep?” Willow whispered, turning back to the man who hovered over her shoulder. The short muscular man shrugged, unable to answer the question and clearly not interested in trying.

Hearing the orderly leave, the doctor stepped closer to the mattress. It was only when her foot grazed the thin bed that Willow heard the soft mumbles coming from below. The redhead set her shoulder bag aside and crouched down until she was inches from her patient’s sleeping face.

As quietly as she could, Willow took her notebook and a pencil from her bag. If what Tara was whispering was important, the doctor wanted to at least have it on paper for future use. She leaned closer, catching small words as her hand scribbled messily on the notepad.

When Tara’s lips stopped moving, the redhead pulled back and saw that the blonde’s eyes were open. But unlike yesterday, Tara’s eyes weren’t clear. They were glassy and unfocused, and seemed to see right through the doctor.

“Ms. Maclay?” Willow whispered, but Tara kept staring ahead. The red-haired doctor was hesitant to touch her patient when Tara was in such a distant state of mind.

“Tara?” Somewhat at a loss for what to do, the doctor simply poked the blonde’s shoulder. No response. She moved to poke Tara with a little more force and quickly drew back when Tara suddenly blinked.

Blinking several more times, the blonde hurriedly scrambled to the other side of the mattress, pressing her back into the wall.

“Hey, it’s okay,” Willow held her hands up, “I was just... well, you were....” The doctor felt incredibly foolish and unprofessional as she stammered through her words. She watched the frightened blonde breath harshly through her nose and moved back to give the other woman some space.

“Sorry, you were,” she paused unsure of what exactly had happened. “Are you okay?” Inwardly, the doctor admonished herself. In her brief months as a practicing doctor, Willow had never experienced anything of this sort, nor had she ever treated anyone whose condition was as serious as Tara’s.

Frustrated and a little disappointed in herself, the redhead rose to her feet. It wasn’t that Willow expected instant results or changes in her patient’s behavior, it just seemed that every time she thought there was some progress, her doubts would set in.

Tara’s breathing returned to normal, but the blonde had yet to raise her head or move an inch from the padded wall.

Willow pulled her professional mask back over her face and regarded her patient with careful consideration. “Tara, do you remember yesterday when you looked at me?” She asked, watching for signs of understanding. “Do you think you could do that again?”

The blonde’s head titled slightly as if thinking.

“Please, Tara.” The doctor had been taught to never beg or say “please” to her patients, but the word left her mouth before she remembered her training. “I’m here to help you, remember.”

Tara’s nervous breathing blew pieces of her hair, flipping the dirty blonde strands across her cheek. Willow waited, a small smile of relief curving her lips when Tara slowly moved her head up. When their eyes connected, the doctor immediately noticed the change in Tara’s irises. The cloudiness often attributed to mentally impaired patients was missing in her patient’s eyes.

“Do you know why you’re here, Tara?” The question was the first to come into her mind.

The ceiling light that had been blinking finally went out with a sizzling pop. A shadow covered the left side of Tara’s face but her eyes stayed on Willow’s.

“Yes.” The hoarse response slowly slipped past Tara’s dry lips.

“Yes?” Progress. Willow reached down and grabbed her notebook from where it lay forgotten near the mattress. “Okay, good,” the redhead nodded, “Can you tell me why you think you’re here?”

A scream made them both jump and a scuffle could be heard in the hallway as rubber shoes screeched against the polished floor. Willow dropped her notepad and peered through the glass, watching as two orderlies half pulled, half carried a man down the hall. A nurse down the hall was curiously scanning over her a sheet attached to her clipboard as she marched down the hallway toward Tara’s room.

Willow cast a reassuring look back at Tara as she stepped into the hall to intercept the approaching nurse.

“Dr. Rosenberg, visitation hours are now over.” The nurse’s stern tone surprised the redhead. Willow glanced at her watch, noting that visitation hours were two hours from ending.

Deciding not to argue, the doctor nodded. “I need to get my things first.”

“I’ll come with you,” leaving no room for argument, the nurse followed Willow into the poorly lit room.

Tara had returned to her docile position against the wall when the two women entered. Willow gathered her belongings and stopped short when she noticed the corner of a loose sheet sticking out from the back of her book. Deciding against correcting the placement of the sheet of paper, she stuffed the notebook into her bag.

“I will see you Monday, okay, Tara.” The nurse beside her snorted but didn’t speak. As both women moved to leave, Willow caught a side glimpse of Tara’s face before she was rushed through the door.

“I’ll be back to fix that light,” the nurse gestured toward the ceiling, “can’t have you sitting in the dark, can we?” She hummed as she led Willow out of the room and down the hall.

Willow waited until she was at least a mile past the Pines View gate before pulling to the side of the road. Rummaging through her bag, the redhead found the loose and nearly crumpled sheet of paper and silently read over the words.

And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven

Wow, this is so intriguing! The interaction between Willow and Tara was very vivid, hopefully next time they'll have longer, now that Tara has shown she CAN talk. The additional information that the institution has questionable ethics makes everything so much more sinister and intense.

Substandard care... grr... substandard care for *Tara*, BIG grr! Lucky Willow's on the case. She doesn't exactly have a lot of leverage, clearly, being just a 'visitor' and susceptible to being shooed out whenever the authorities feel threatened. But she's Willow, I don't see her walking away while there's work to be done. Resolve face, and all :)

The meaning of that note, a clue of some sort - could that last part have been an address, half-written? Something to get Willow on track to finding out why Tara's really there? I'm forming the grim suspicion that she was quite alright when she was first brought in - for whatever dark reason - and that her mental state now, her introversion, is how she's coping with her harsh conditions. That's just... terrible. Boy I'm hoping someone's arse gets kicked but good.

If there's a silver lining, it's that she evidently realises she has an ally in Willow, that she's not alone. That's got to be a powerful thought for her to hold on to.

This story is great - cryptic, suspenseful, eerie and W/T. Hopefully, that was enough info from Tara to provide Willow with a starting point.

Great stuff. More soon please, but of course after the birthday celebrations :D

Oh Yvonne, big HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I'm finally getting caught up. This is very intriguing and has some serious questions raised. I'm getting excited knowing that at least Tara knows she can confide in Willow. But you naughty girl, only give us half a clue...half an address. Okay, Willow's brighter than me, so she'll figure it out.

Oh, and about the dr./pt. relationships...I worked in a hospital for years and believe me, there are all kinds of things like that going on...at least I heard rumors. :wink

First of all. Happy Birthday!! Hope it was wonderful. :bounce

This update made many more questions arise. I was originally thinking that Tara's father and brother had her there so they did not have to deal with her. And when Giles made the comment about forced drug treatment and bribery, I was almost convinced. Then you threw the possible addie in there and that leads me to believe that is where they live. Now, I am wondering if Tara is there for the previous mentioned reason and she wants Willow to find out what she can. Or if there is something else going on. The nurse making Willow leave two hours early tends to make me think that there that nurse was not coming back to "fix the light" that was on the ceiling. She had another agenda. And the line that Tara wrote above the address made me go hmmm... I could go on and on as my curiosity is getting the better of me. So, for now. I will sit here and wonder until you update. Please make it soon.

Yet another note: I’m truly sorry for the delay in updating, my computer crashed and I had to retype everything on my cousin’s. I had hoped to have two updates before I leave Friday, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to be possible, so I apologize. Anyway, thanks for the feedback, kind words, and for reading. Individual replies will be done as soon as I have the time, but I really appreciate the comments.

Chapter Four

Fingers drummed on the table of the small café a block from Willow’s home. Robin paid for her purchases before joining her best friend at the corner table.

“Can I ask you a question?” Willow stopped tapping on the table and fiddled with the napkin dispenser.

“Uh oh,” Robin smirked against the rim of her coffee cup, “Willow’s got her thinking cap on. Does this mean that I have to think too? ‘Cause you know my brain doesn’t function well without at least two cups of caffeine loaded beverages.”

“What number are you on now?” The doctor noted the numerous empty sugar packages on the table.

“Three.” The dark-haired woman smiled guiltily. She took another gulp from her cup and motioned for her friend to ask her question.

“Alright, so, of all the people you’ve helped prosecute, how many of them were actually criminally insane?” Taking a sip from her mocha, Willow waited for her friend to answer.

“And by insane, you mean the little talking elves made me to do, I was only following orders, insane?” Robin asked. Willow nodded, rolling her eyes playfully as her friend went on. “Well, you’ll always have people who would easily plead insanity for a lesser or least harsh sentence. But,” she paused, unsure on how much to reveal, “There have been one or two clients that were legally identified as insane.”

“Well, how did you really know?” The doctor frowned, clarifying herself, “That they were insane?”

“You’re the doctor, you tell me.” The grin on Robin’s face fell away when her joke failed to raise a smile on Willow’s lips. “It’s hard to say,” her eyes took on a faraway stare, “I’ve known some pretty good actors and not one of them has ever come close to showing the amount of madness I’ve seen in the courtroom.”

“And you’ve never doubted or questioned what you saw?” Willow asked as her mind filled with unanswered questions

Robin pushed her coffee aside and closely regarded her roommate. “What’s this about, Willow? Is something wrong at the hospital?”

“No, no nothing’s wrong. I was only wondering,” the redhead shrugged and Robin’s instincts told her to leave it be. If something were truly bothering the doctor, she was sure Willow would come around to telling her when the time was right.

“I have some things to take care of,” Willow pushed away from the table, “I’ll see you at home, okay.” The prosecutor nodded and watched her friend leave the restaurant.

It took Willow less than twenty minutes to walk home. Once through the door, the young woman went straight to her room and the note that lay partially covered by a black diskette. While her laptop booted up, Willow’s mind drifted toward her patient. She couldn’t imagine that Tara, or anyone in Pines View, was being abused, and the simple thought sickened her. Mentally searching through the past couple of days, her minds eye couldn’t remember seeing any visible signs of mistreatment. In fact, other than the often rudeness from some of the staff, the hospital appeared to be following the rules. Or so it seemed. The doctor knew that she was completely ignorant of what happened once visitation hours were over.

Leaning back in her chair, the redhead sighed gently. Less than two weeks ago she was a young doctor yearning for a chance to prove herself and now that she had finally been given the opportunity, Willow wasn’t sure where to start. Her eyes connected with the cryptic note before scanning around the room while her computer finished loading.

Typing in the necessary commands, Willow’s mind drifted out of its daydream and toward the task at hand. Deciding that the first half of the note would only be solved once the last section was completed, the doctor searched for the completion to the possible address. She started by searching through the online directory and found several possible street names beginning with the first three letters given.

Luckily there was only one “328 W” listed. The search turned out easier than expected, almost too easy based on what Willow had been thinking. Jotting the address down on a scrap piece of paper, the redhead focused her attention on the first “clue”.

“And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,” she slowly spoke the words several times. A soft knock vibrated on her door.

“Come in,” Willow called, half focused on Robin and half determined to figure out the line.

“Sorry,” the young woman grimaced at her interruption. “You have a message on the machine. I saved it for you.”

“Is it from Giles?” Thinking she forgot to erase the old message from the home answering machine, Willow looked back toward the door.

“No, I don’t think so. I only listened to the first half then saved it.” Robin shrugged, preparing to leave the room.

The red-haired doctor nodded, her mind already back on the note. She repeated the phrase for what seemed like the fourth time.

Robin stopped outside the hallway and peeked back into the room. “You know, I never thought I’d see the day that Willow Rosenberg was quoting the Bible.” She smirked.

“Wait, what?” Surprised, Willow looked from the paper to her roommate.

“That line,” Robin stepped fully into the room and leaned against the doorframe, “it’s from the Bible.”

“Are you sure?” Brows furrowed, the doctor frowned.

“Oh yeah, I’m six years of Bible-study, sure.” The prosecutor nodded, remembering her childhood years.

Too easy.

“Are you going to be here awhile?” Willow asked and gathered her notes, hurriedly packing them into her shoulder bag.

“I might step out a little later, but yeah, I should be here most of the day.” Robin watched her best friend scramble around the room.

“Will you be up for a movie and some ice cream?” Willow asked, feeling the need to spend some time with her roommate.

“Ooh, double scoop?” The other woman’s eyes lit up with childlike anticipation. The redhead grinned, nodding as they moved down the steps.

“I’ll be back in an hour or two,” Willow smiled, hurrying through the door and completely forgetting about the flashing light on her machine.

~~

Willow’s silver car pulled along the curb of a small house just outside of downtown. 328 West Dennison, she checked her slip of paper and looked up at the house. A mixture of brick and wood, the house appeared abandoned from the outside. The windows were closed as were the curtains, and the untidy garden spilled onto the concrete pathway.

“Paula Evans?” The doctor asked once the door opened to reveal an older woman wearing a green and purple sweater littered with what Willow thought was cat hair.

“Yes,” Mrs. Evans arched a curious yet friendly eyebrow toward the unknown woman standing at her door.

“Willow Rosenberg, I’m a friend of Tara Maclay-.”

Before Willow could continue, the older woman interrupted her. “Is something wrong?” The fingers of a shaking hand gripped the hem of the worn sweater.

“No, Tara’s fine,” sensing the woman’s panic, the doctor answered quickly although her words weren’t completely true. “I, um,” Willow rubbed her arms as if she were cold, “do you mind if I come in?”

Paula hesitated a moment before letting the younger woman inside. “What’s this about?” Motioning for Willow to have a seat, Mrs. Evans slowly lowered herself into her reclining chair.

“I just have a few questions, if that’s alright.” The redhead’s jeans slid against the plastic covering of the couch. A white kitten tiredly watched the two women before lowering its head and returning to sleep.

Stuck between suspicion and interest, the older woman nodded somewhat happy for the company. If this woman was a friend of Tara’s, Paula saw no harm in talking with the stranger. Besides, she was learning to become more trustful, and the young redhead seemed nice enough.

“How long have you known Tara?” Willow asked as she took her notebook and a pen from her bag. She saw the other woman curiously looking at the items before answering the question.

“Let’s see,” Paula leaned back into the cushion of her chair, “Elizabeth died when Tara was nine, and I became their Nanny shortly after. I just about raised her until she turned eighteen.”

“Then what happened?” The doctor leaned closer to show that she was interested in what Mrs. Evans was saying.

“Well, then, uh,” she paused as if remembering something, but the memory passed just as quickly as it came. “Well, I moved here to Seattle.”

Willow noticed the brief change but chose to continue with her questions. “What about Tara’s father and her brother? What happened to them?”

Paula frowned, “If my memory’s right, her father’s still preaching out in Rose County.” Her expression turned grim, “And Donnie, well, I suspect he’s in jail somewhere, or worse.”

“Why would you think that?” Pen in hand, the redhead waited for the woman to answer.

“He was never the one to stay out of trouble.” Mrs. Evan’s shook her head disapprovingly, “That boy was always in some sort of mess, nothing like his sisters.” Willow’s hand froze against the notepad.

“Sisters?” The doctor tried to hide her surprise. The file that was currently in her bag stated that Donald Jr. was Tara’s only sibling.

“Oh yes, those two were always close,” a faint smile crossed Paula’s face before it disappeared and was replaced with an odd expression at Willow’s next question.

“Mrs. Evans, when was the last time you saw Tara, or her sister?” Inside, the redhead’s mind was reeling.

The older woman scooted forward until she rested on the end of the chair. “Where did you say you know Tara from, again?” Her grayish blue eyes searched Willow’s face.

Fumbling with her notebook, Willow hurriedly stood. She was the worse liar she knew, and by the piercing stare Paula was giving her, she was sure the other woman would see through what ever she decided to say. The option of revealing herself as Tara’s doctor, however unofficial, was not a risk Willow was willing to take without having more knowledge of what was truly going on.

The woman sitting on the chair took Willow’s silence and movement as the only answer she needed. “I don’t know who you are, but I think you better go before I call the police.” She stood as well, eyes flickering from the redhead to the telephone nearby.

“Sorry to have bothered you,” Willow managed to get out before quickly moving toward the door.

Paula Evans watched the young woman get into a silver car before speeding away. Once the automobile was out of sight, nervous hands reached for the telephone.

~~

Willow inwardly smacked herself. Not only had she given the older woman her real name, which Mrs. Evans was probably repeating to the police by now, but she’d asked too many questions. She was not a detective; she was a doctor, albeit a very snoopy doctor, but a doctor nonetheless.

However, even with the possible involvement of the police, Willow was overall happy with her mild interrogation. Tara had a sister. The missing detail changed everything, adding to the rising list of unanswered questions. The doctor shifted into a faster gear and sped through downtown as her mind replayed the meeting with Mrs. Evans, trying to remember as many expressions and subtle body movements as she could.

Wow. A sister. And a nanny! There's so much to find out about Tara still, isn't there?

I bet that Tara's nanny has NO idea Tara's in a mental hospital. Am I right? Am I?!

I didn't think it would take Willow that much thinking to figure out scripture when she read it. OH oh!!! Scripture! Her father's preaching! Oh!!!!!!! Connections. Anyways. Yes. Ahem.

Can't wait for more!
