Yeah, so basically I've been really busy. That's all I can say there. I decided I'm too lazy to do replies, so I'll give a general 'thanks' to everyone who left feedback after my last bout of replies. Oh, and I think Kasey's on to something about the dinosaurs. Anyway, I said Part 22 would be three parts. I'm a liar. It'll be four... I think anyway. I'm sleepy. So here's the update. Sorry if it's not all great and things.

Track 22: Glory of Love (From “Karate Kid 2”) by A New Found Glory

Part C

When Tara got off the phone with Willow, she agreed with her sister that they were in fact at their destination. She then punched a number into her phone and waited for the other person to answer. After a ‘Hello?’ from the other end, she said, “Mrs. Rosenberg? It’s Tara.”

Shelia Rosenberg picked up her pace. The stock boy pushing the shopping cart full of her groceries had to struggle to keep up as they walked down a row of cars in the parking lot. “Tara, dear, I had to make a little stop off. It’s going to be another few minutes until I get there.” She sounded incredibly frazzled.

“No hurry. We can wait,” Tara reassured the obviously flustered woman.

Shelia hadn’t expected to take so long in the grocery store and felt in such a rush. She didn’t want Tara and her sister to have to wait alone in a strange town for very long. “I’ll be there soon. Bye, dear.”

“Bye, Mrs. Rosenberg,” Tara replied and hung up the phone. She then wiped her palms on her jeans and started fidgeting.

“Nervous?” her sister asked from the driver’s seat.

“And the understatement of the year award goes to Nichole Maclay,” Tara said sarcastically. “Of course I’m nervous. It’s her parents. Wouldn’t you be?” She made a few whiney noises and leaned her head onto her oldest sister’s shoulder. “Thanks for doing this,” she whispered.

“That’s the sixtieth time you’ve said that today,” Nichole teased even as she reached over to give her little sister’s hand a reassuring squeeze.

Tara had flown in to Cincinnati late the previous night, and her sister had picked her up, given her a place to stay, and offered to drive her the two hours to Willow’s parents’ house the next day. It had all been very generous, even for family.

“Like I said before,” Nichole went on, “I missed you. Gran and Grandpa missed you. It was this big ‘missed you’ fest, and it sucked. Do you know how tickled Gran was when she found out you were coming?”

“I think I can guess,” Tara said, smirking. “I’m still having trouble breathing from that hug she gave me.”

“Well it’s been, what, over a year since she’s seen you?” Nichole pointed out.

“Something like that,” Tara agreed a bit sadly.

Their grandparents had driven to Nichole’s from Columbus that morning to spend the day with the two girls. Tara hadn’t seen them since they had visited for Elle’s wedding, and she missed them as much as they missed her.

“Look on the bright side though,” Nichole said. “Elle sees them enough for the both of you.” She grinned widely at the jab to their other sister.

Tara laughed. “For someone who said she’d never go back to that ‘hell hole of a city,’ she sure visits a lot.”

The two sat for a few minutes listening to the car’s radio that Nichole had left playing while they waited for Willow’s mother. They were parked in the high school parking lot very near a sign which displayed ‘Center Grove High School.’ Shelia and Ira Rosenberg had decided it was an easy landmark to find, and Shelia was meeting them so the girls could follow her back to the Rosenberg’s home. There were a few poorly marked roads, and Willow’s parents didn’t want Tara and her sister to get lost in the dark in a strange place.

“Are you sure I look okay?” Tara asked as she began fidgeting again. “I don’t want them to think…”

“You look fine,” Nichole interrupted. “Don’t worry.”

Tara tried to still her hands and calm down.

Nichole looked up as she caught headlights in the rearview mirror. “That must be her.”

Tara craned her neck to see a car coming from behind to pull up next to them. When the vehicle stopped, the driver’s side door opened, and Tara’s heart jumped when she saw the top of a red head start to emerge, thinking it was Willow. She realized she was mistaken though when the rest of the woman was revealed, and she knew this had to be Willow’s mother. Putting her hand on the door handle, Tara moved to step outside as well with Nichole following suit.

Shelia saw the two girls coming out the car and assumed the one from the passenger’s side to be her daughter’s girlfriend. “Tara?” she asked, walking around her own vehicle to greet them.

Tara stepped around the car to meet the older woman. Nichole joined them as well, and Tara stood closely to her sister for physical reassurance. She extended her hand and shyly said, “Nice to meet you, Mrs. Rosenberg.”

Shelia took Tara’s hand and quickly pulled the girl into a hug. “It’s Shelia, and it’s so nice to meet you too.”

Hesitantly, Tara hugged Willow’s mother back. When she was released, she was still a bit too surprised to remember to introduce her sister.

Nichole took on the matter herself and reached out to shake Mrs. Rosenberg’s hand. “I’m Nichole. Tara’s sister,” she said as the older woman took her hand.

They exchanged pleasantries, and Shelia suddenly realized she had popsicles and ice cream that were probably beginning to melt. She then told the girls about how far they’d be driving, and they all started toward the Rosenberg home.

Once inside the car, Tara let out a relieved sigh.

“That wasn’t so bad, now was it?” Nichole said as she started the car.

Tara smiled slightly and replied, “One down, one to go.”

Less than ten minutes later Shelia pulled into her driveway followed soon by Nichole and Tara. She parked outside the garage and gathered the few groceries from the trunk before leading the girls through the front door.

From the living room, Ira heard the front door open and close as well as his wife’s voice. Knowing she was most likely talking to Tara or Tara’s sister, he stood from the sofa and went to finally meet Tara face to face.

Inside the front door, Tara saw a hall on the left and right sides of the foyer. As Shelia was talking to her, she saw who she assumed to be Willow’s father coming from the right hallway. She gave him a small smile as she placed the bag she was carrying on the floor.

“Hello!” Ira interrupted whatever his wife was saying. “I’m glad you made it.” He was smiling like a fool and before the girl could say anything in reply, he pulled her into a tight hug.

Tara let out a squeak in surprise at the sudden movement. She vaguely wondered what Willow had told her parents to make them like her so much already. “Hi,” she managed.

As Ira pulled away, there was a crash somewhere to the left. Everyone in the foyer turned toward the noise and saw Willow standing at the bottom of the stairs, wide-eyed and mouth gaping. It was almost a comedic moment with everyone frozen and staring. Suddenly Willow moved forward, and four voices tried to shout a warning about the glass on the floor.

When Willow first saw Tara she was dumbfounded. It seemed like everything just stopped around her, but after a moment she gained control of herself and rushed forward. She heard everyone’s shouts, but she knew the glass was there and stepped over it. She wasn’t going to let shards of glass in her feet get in the way of getting to Tara.

For the third time that night, Tara found herself abruptly pulled into an embrace. She wasn’t complaining though because this time it was Willow’s arms around her. She wrapped her arms around the redhead’s body and the two of them stood silently enjoying the contact for a few moments.

“Hey,” Willow eventually whispered into blonde locks. She didn’t know how Tara was here or why, but she knew she didn’t want to pull away any time soon.

“Hey,” Tara whispered back. She didn’t dare say anything else for fear of getting choked up and crying. It just felt so good to be with Willow again.

The three others in the room could only watch and smile at the scene in front of them. Ira and Shelia Rosenberg were happy to make their daughter happy. Nichole was smiling because she thought Tara and Willow were cute together. The last time she’d seen in person her sister’s significant other was when Tara was in sixth grade and Nichole saw her holding hands in the backyard with the boy from down the street. Her little sister’s tastes had improved immensely.

“You’re here,” Willow stated the obvious, finally pulling back to look at Tara’s face.

Tara nodded and smiled. She stepped away slightly to take in the full Willow-view. The redhead was clad in grey pajama bottoms and a very familiar black hooded sweatshirt with a red screen-printed turntable across the front. “Nice shirt,” she said, grinning.

Willow blushed slightly, knowing she was caught. “I was going to give it back. Promise.”

Tara’s grin widened.

“Well you’re the one who left it on my bed,” Willow defended herself, though she was grinning too.

Ira cleared his throat loudly, interrupting the girls. He liked Tara so far, but he wasn’t sure he wanted to hear anything about his daughter involving beds and forgotten articles of clothing.

Willow blushed brighter this time. Somehow she’d completely forgotten there were other people in the room. Tara was in the same boat and blushed as well.

“Hi,” Willow squeaked to the others.

“Surprise!” Ira shouted, motioning toward Tara with his hands as if she was a new toaster on a game show.

Shelia rolled her eyes. Sometimes her husband could act like a complete stooge.

“Whoa,” Willow uttered as she finally noticed the extra, creepily familiar face in the room. “Tara-clone,” she said, more to herself than anyone else.

“Actually,” Nichole piped up, “I came along first, so if anything, that,” she pointed to Tara, “is a Nichole-clone.”

As Willow tried to wrap her mind around things, Tara told her, “And that,” she pointed to her sibling, “would be my oldest sister Nichole.”

“Nice to meet you,” Nichole said, holding her hand out to the redhead.

“You too,” Willow replied slowly. As she shook Nichole’s hand, she tried to discreetly as possible study the woman. When she’d met Elle, she’d been surprised by the similarity between the siblings, but with Nichole and Tara, they looked even more alike; same hair color, same eyes, same nose, same smile… The only difference between the two seemed to be that Nichole’s hair was cut differently and she was a bit heavier with a rounder face. There was no doubt they were sisters, and if Willow didn’t know there was a six year age difference, she’d guess they were twins.

Tired of standing and in need of putting groceries away, Shelia suggested, “Why don’t I make coffee and we can all go chat in the living room.”

Everybody agreed and finally began to move from the foyer when Willow suddenly remembered, “The glass on the stairs!”

“I’ll get it while I make the coffee,” her mother said. “Go sit down with everyone else.”

Willow happily complied and followed behind Tara, grasping the belt loop on the blonde’s hip as she trailed after her. In the living room the contact didn’t cease. Willow curled her bare feet under herself on the couch and leaned her body against Tara’s before reaching out to hold the other woman’s hand. She was still in shock at her girlfriend’s sudden appearance and almost feared Tara wouldn’t really be there the second physical contact was lost.

There was a slight awkward silence surrounding everyone as they waited for Shelia to bring coffee, but it didn’t last for long. Ira jumped in asking Tara about her flight and Nichole about the drive as if he’d known them for years.

While Tara had felt nervous talking to Willow’s father on the phone, she was a bit more at ease with Willow to her left and her big sister to her right on the couch. The familiarity had a calming effect on her.

When Shelia joined everyone in the living room, she brought a tray with mugs and a coffee pot and began pouring cups of the steaming liquid for everyone.

Nichole declined the offered coffee saying, “I should probably head back home. It’s getting late.”

“But you just got here,” Willow found herself blurting out. She hadn’t said much while her father talked to the two sisters, but rather sat back enjoying the interaction between the siblings. They seemed close, and Willow, for the millionth time in her life, wished she had a brother or sister to be close to. Also, she wanted more time to get to know Nichole a bit better.

“I’d love to stay longer,” Nichole said sincerely. “It’s just that I have clients all morning tomorrow and should get some sleep for that.”

“Clients?” Shelia asked with a bit of intrigue.

“I’m a psychologist,” Nichole explained.

Hearing Nichole’s career field sent Shelia tumbling into a story about how she had once considered studying psychology in school. After she rambled for a moment, Ira jumped in to save everyone from having to hear about his wife’s ‘good old days of college.’ “We don’t want to keep you too long if you have to get back,” he said.

Nichole smiled politely and stood to leave. Everyone else rose as well to say their goodbyes.

“Thanks for bringing Tara,” Ira said as they reached the front door.

“No problem,” Nichole replied. “I was just glad to see my little sister.” She smiled and gave Tara’s hand a squeeze.

The three Rosenbergs stood back to give the two sisters a moment together.

“Come visit soon, yeah?” Tara said as she pulled Nichole into a tight hug.

Nichole pulled back to look the other girl in the eyes. “As soon as I can.” She glanced over to Willow briefly then back to Tara. “She’s cute,” she whispered, the sparkle in her eyes giving away the grin she was trying to suppress.

“I know,” Tara whispered back with a conspiratorial wink.

With one last hug Nichole was on her way. Willow snuck up beside Tara and watched through the window with her as Nichole got into her car and drove off down the street.

“Why don’t you take Tara’s things up to your room,” Ira suggested, breaking the quiet moment that rested over them.

Willow didn’t hesitate and grabbed the bag by the door in one hand and Tara’s hand in the other before dragging the blonde toward the steps.

The coffee she’d made forgotten, Shelia shouted after the two girls, “When you come back down I got those popsicles if you want them.”

“Are you in a hurry?” Tara asked as she was pulled up the stairs.

Willow glanced back at the blonde behind her but didn’t slow her steps. She simply replied, “Yes,” and kept climbing. Once each stair was conquered she tugged Tara to the right and said, “This way.” A few doors down the hallway brought them outside her bedroom. She dropped Tara’s bag inside the doorway and pulled the blonde into a sudden kiss.

Tara barely had time to register what was happening before Willow’s lips were on hers. With all the sudden movement going on tonight she was surprised she didn’t get whiplash or something. It only took a second though for her to reciprocate the kiss. She knew she missed the other woman, but the feel of Willow’s mouth and body against her own somehow brought into perspective just how much. As the redhead’s tongue slipped between her lips, Tara nearly melted.

They both pulled away slightly after a moment, out of breath. “I wanted to do that since I first saw you tonight,” Willow panted. Her hands were cupping Tara’s cheeks as their foreheads rested together. “I figured I shouldn’t maul you in front of my parents though,” she added causing both of them to giggle a little.

“Probably not a good idea,” Tara agreed, panting a little as well. She stared back at Willow, grinning, for a long moment then leaned in again slowly to recapture the other woman’s lips in a soft kiss. When they pulled apart again she was still grinning.

“Have you ever had that feeling like you’ve been set up?” Willow asked softly but playfully.

Tara pretended to think for a second. “Hmm… I think I’m going to have to say I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about.”

Willow gently shoved the blonde away laughing. “Liar! You were in cahoots with them!”

“In cahoots?” Tara questioned, laughing as well. “Who says that anymore?”

“I do…”

“And I’m betting the seventy year old lady who owns the deli on Vine,” Tara added, earning another light shove from Willow.

“You’re trying to change the topic,” Willow accused.

“All right, you caught me,” Tara gave in. “I was ‘in cahoots’ with your parents.”

“I knew it!” the redhead shouted triumphantly. Her moment of glory quickly faded into confusion, and she looked at Tara questioningly. “How’d they get a hold of you?”

“Your dad’s pretty tricky,” Tara said, leaning back against the doorframe to stand in a more relaxed position. “He stole your phone at some point on Friday and got my number.”

Willow’s eyes moved from side to side as she tried to figure out when her father could have gotten her phone without her knowing it. “When we went to the bathroom,” she said quietly, mostly to herself.

“I guess.” Tara shrugged her shoulders because she really had no idea. “So he called me and asked me to come. And here I am.”

“He is tricky!”

Tara just smiled at the redhead. Her ‘shocked’ face was incredibly adorable.

“Oh!” Willow exclaimed as something suddenly occurred to her. “I got you something today on the drive home.” She finally entered her bedroom tugging Tara along behind her.

“On the drive?” the blonde said a little skeptically as she followed Willow. “Is it some sort of road side souvenir?”

“Kind of,” Willow replied with a giggle as she started digging through one of her bags. “We stopped for gas in Columbus today and I thought of you.”

“It’s not a Brutus bobble-head or something is it?” Tara asked with a raised eyebrow.

Willow stopped digging and looked back at Tara. “A what?”

“Never mind.”

The redhead went back to her task and a few seconds later turned around, squeezing something light green in her palm. She held her hand out toward Tara. “Here.”

Tara reached out curiously so Willow could drop whatever it was into her open hand. She felt the object hit her palm and looked down to see the green package begin to unroll. Reading the label she smiled. “Fun Dip?”

“’Cause the one time with your hair…” Willow trailed off knowing Tara would understand.

Unexpectedly, Tara pulled Willow into a warm hug. “Thank you. I love it,” she murmured into the red hair covering Willow’s neck.

“You’re welcome,” Willow murmured back. “I had to buy like five packs so in case I got tempted to eat some I’d still have one left for you.” The body enveloping her began to tremble as she felt Tara laugh. “Seriously! I already ate two of them!” she went on, causing Tara to laugh even harder.

Still laughing, Tara pulled back and looked into the redhead’s eyes. “You’re too cute.”

Just then, Shelia’s voice trailed up from the bottom of the steps. “Are you girls coming back down?”

“Yes, Mother!” Willow shouted back. To Tara she said, “It’s not like the popsicles will melt in the freezer or something.”

As they both left Willow’s bedroom, Tara jokingly asked, “Two packets of Fun Dip. Don’t you think you’ve had enough sugar today?”

“You can never have too much sugar,” Willow grinned.

In the kitchen, Shelia was leaning against the countertop with a spoonful of chocolate ice cream in one hand and an open piece of mail in her other. She tossed it aside and picked up another envelope from the stack beside her as Willow and Tara walked into the room. She peered over the top of her reading glasses at the two girls. “I tell you, bills and credit card offers. That’s all anyone sends anymore.”

Willow smiled at her mother and led Tara over to the table. “You want a popsicle?” she asked the blonde.

“Sure,” Tara replied as she sat down.

As Willow walked over to the freezer, Shelia said, “I wasn’t sure which ones to get. There were two kinds.”

“Two?” Willow asked, opening the freezer door.

“Two,” Shelia confirmed. “One box was nothing but the red, white, and blue ones, but I was looking at the ingredients list and saw that they may contain milk protein.”

Willow rolled her eyes because she knew how much of an insane label reader her mother was.

Shelia looked at Tara as she kept talking. “I remembered Willow telling me you were vegan, so I thought I’d better go with the others.”

At the table, Tara smiled in thanks.

Shutting the freezer door, Willow turned around with a yellow box in her hands. “Superheroes?” she asked her mother, looking up.

“See,” Shelia started as she got up to go to her daughter. “There are the red, white, and blue ones, but then there are these two other kinds; red, blue, and black, or maybe that’s purple, then green, that blackish color, and this lighter purple. They don’t have the milk protein warning like the others and they’re kosher.”

“Okay,” Willow said, taking the box over to Tara to let her pick which kind she’d like.

“Ooh, Spiderman,” Tara said, looking at the selection. “I’ll have one of those.”

Willow made her own choice and put the box back in the freezer. “Where’s Dad?” she asked on her way back to the table.

“Making a phone call,” Shelia replied, lifting a pint of ice cream from the countertop to get another spoonful. “He’ll be back in a minute.”

As if on cue, Ira walked into the kitchen. “We’re having popsicles?” he asked, noticing the two girls at the table opening packages.

“They’re in the freezer,” Shelia pointed out.

Ira grabbed one and joined Willow and Tara. “So Willow tells me you’re opening your record store soon,” he said to the blonde.

Tara smiled warmly, then shot Willow a discreet, disapproving look as she felt the redhead run a foot up her calf. There was no way she could talk to Willow’s father with the redhead playing footsy with her under the table. “Hopefully,” she said, directing her attention back to Mr. Rosenberg. “The bookstore closed yesterday, so we have a bit of work ahead of us.”

“Good luck with that then,” Ira replied with his own warm smile. To him it was so nice to meet a young person who took initiative with something. He felt the younger generations were becoming lazy and found it refreshing when someone showed him not everyone was afraid of a little work.

They all talked a little bit more about the store as they ate their popsicles. When he finished, Ira announced that he was heading off to bed. The three women wished him a goodnight, and Shelia took his place at the table.

As Tara slowly made her way through her own popsicle, she looked up at Willow and laughed. “Your lips are blue.”

“So are yours,” Willow said, giggling as well.

Tara just kept grinning and shrugged as she began looking at the colors blending on her popsicle. She saw where the blackish purple had bled with the blue to make a navy color. “This is a really pretty blue,” she said and started to ask, “Is this what color your new ta-…” but when she noticed Willow’s wide eyes and subtly shaking head, she finished lamely, “ta-tapestry is?” Her cheeks flushed bright red at how stupid she probably sounded.

“Tapestry?” Shelia asked, looking at her daughter.

“Umm, yeah, for my, um bedroom wall, um back home,” Willow tried to save herself. She hadn’t told her parents about the tattoo and wasn’t planning to anytime soon.

“Pretty,” Shelia said and glanced behind her to the clock on the wall.

‘Later,’ Willow mouthed to Tara who looked a little dumbstruck.

“I think I’m going off to bed,” Shelia announced as she turned back around. “I’ll see you girls in the morning and make some breakfast.”

“Okay. Night, Mom,” Willow said as she reached under the table for Tara’s hand to try and make the other woman feel a bit less flustered than she looked.

“Goodnight, Mrs. Rosenberg,” Tara managed.

“Goodnight, girls,” Shelia said as she rose to leave the kitchen.

After her mother was long gone, Willow finally said, “Sorry about that.”

“They don’t know?” Tara asked. She was beginning to calm down a bit.

Willow shook her head emphatically from side to side. “They’d flip out.”

“Sorry,” Tara apologized for her near slip.

“It’s not your fault. You didn’t know,” Willow reassured. She let out a tiny laugh. “Tapestry?”

Tara dropped her head down to the table and mumbled, “I panicked.”

Willow lowered her head down as well so they were eye level. “You realize now I’m going to have to buy a blue tapestry for when my parents visit, right?” She had a huge smile on her face, and she tapped the tip of her popsicle stick lightly against the blonde’s nose.

Scrunching up her nose, Tara quickly retrieved the offending stick and took the final bite to finish it off.

“Hey! That was mine!” Willow whined.

“You shouldn’t have put it in my face,” Tara teased while Willow tried to fight for the blonde’s popsicle. Tara won out and wrestled herself away long enough to finish the last chunk of red ice from her stick. She quickly chewed and swallowed and stuck out her bluish tongue at the redhead to show it was all gone.

Taking the opportunity where she saw it, Willow leaned in quickly muttering, “I hope you get brain-freeze,” before she took Tara’s lips and tongue with her own.

“No freezing here. Quite the opposite actually,” Tara whispered as they pulled apart.

“Tease,” Willow joked before asking if Tara was ready for bed. In actuality, the blonde wasn’t tired. Unlike Willow, Tara was still two hours behind the redhead, but she still agreed and followed Willow upstairs.

“Are you sure I should sleep in here?” Tara asked when they were outside Willow’s bedroom.

“Of course I’m sure,” Willow said, pulling Tara into the room.

Tara hesitated. “But your parents….”

“They’re the ones who told me to bring your stuff to my room,” Willow pointed out. “Now get your pajamas and I’ll show you where everything is before I brush my teeth.”

After leaving Tara in the bathroom washing her face, Willow slipped back into her bedroom to apply ointment to her back. Tara returned just as the redhead was finishing up.

“Can I see?” Tara asked, coming up behind her girlfriend.

“It has stuff on it, but yeah,” Willow said as she lifted her shirt up a bit for Tara to see.

Tara bent down and looked the tattoo over for a moment before saying, “It’s cute.” She ran her fingers lightly along the skin beside it.

“Thanks,” Willow replied then fidgeted. “That tickles!” she squealed a little as she squirmed.

Tara smiled and stopped her movement. “Sorry,” she said, even though she wasn’t really that sorry.

Willow gently lowered her shirt back down so it didn’t rub against any of the goop and turned to Tara. “Ready for bed?”

The blonde nodded and slowly followed Willow to the bed. She was still unsure about them sleeping in the same bed at Willow’s parents’ house. The little smile Willow gave her was enough to make her follow the redhead under the blankets though.

The two lay in bed cuddled up to each other not saying anything for a long while. They enjoyed the mutual silence, just glad to be with each other again. Eventually, Willow leaned in and kissed Tara on the tip of her nose then her lips. She pulled back and they looked at each other quietly again.

Despite acting most of the night as of nothing had happened between them, they both had things on their minds. It was Tara who took the first step to voicing her thoughts. “I think we need to talk,” she said softly.

“We do,” Willow agreed as she ran a hand up and down Tara’s arm. “But can we forget about it for tonight and just enjoy this? We have thirty plus hours of road trip to talk.”

It took Tara a second, but she relented. “Okay, we can do that.”

“Thanks,” Willow said as she leaned in again for another gentle kiss.

They traded chaste kisses for a while longer, and eventually they relaxed into sleep together knowing they would talk soon and that things were going to be all right.

I don't care if you think I'm an idiot 'cause I know I don't know shit. Anytime I've got a good idea I'm quick to forget it. Another day, another bag, another drag. Another chance gone to make something of myself. So fucking what.

oh sarah, i love this fic so much that i came out of lurkdom just to comment. the wait was worth it, as i'm glad that willow and tara are finally reunited.

i really like the way you write willow's relationship with her parents. sheila remembering that tara is vegan was a nice touch, you know that would never happen in canon.

take your time with future parts, i think we all know how icky real life gets.
