Willow and Tara live happy together in a place untouched by Mutant Enemy. This is a forum for Willow and Tara Fan Fiction (i.e. fan fiction, top 10s, etc...) Please read the content advisories on individual stories, read at your own discretion.

Tara's working out with the punch bag thingy! I'm so there ;)

I guess you can't be in a para military organization and not have it influence you somehow.

Great premise for this story. I like that you're resisting making Walsh a caricature, it's so much more interesting this way. Your Tara p.o.v seems right on, esp. that Tara can help her attraction to Willow.

Looking forward to reading more. Thanks for writing this.

Hey all... Well, I spent today fleshing out the outline for this story, and as of right now it's looking like this sucker's gonna be 32+ parts. Not including sub-parts. Yikes! I've gone completely insane! Update soon. As always, thanks for reading!

***The Rose24 - Yikes! She gives me the creeps, too!

***Macky77 - Fascinated yet nervous? I can live with that. Muahaha.

***Thanatopsis - What can I say? Trust your gut instinct. Or just pull a Xander. "Maggie bad. Wiccan love good."

***xita - She is a bitch, ain't she? I think I'll have to work that in somewhere, along with "evil wench" and "skanky ho bitch." Hehe. I feel a Willow-babble coming on!

*** mollyig - I'm glad you liked the end conversation from "Hush." I wanted to stay pretty true to "Hush," to give everyone a solid base of reference. Plus I adore that episode (duh), and wanted a shot at exploring it a little. The concept of what was going through Willow and Tara's minds during those first meetings has always intrigued me.

***BFR from Paris - It's always a love/hate thing, ain't it? Hehe.

***barnabasvamp - No! Say it ain't so! It can't be too late! Damn... you're spoiled? Well, at least that means I'll have you begging. Begging is good.

***Tulipp - LOL! Okay, your image of Tara working out made me giggle, too. When I first came up with this idea, I have to admit, that as my initial reaction, too. I thought, "Tara? In the Initiative? How am I gonna pull that off?" I must say, though, that re-watching the Episode with Tara's first axing reaffirmed my belief that Powerful-Fighting-Tara = Sexy-Tara!

***Miss1234Kitty - Patience, kitty. Patience. *G*

***Grimaldi - "Creepy" seems to be a popular word to describe Maggie. I guess I'm doing something right. ;)

***MissQuirky - Maggie? Plotting something? Not Maggie Walsh! Hehe.

We know that Tara has a lot of inner strength, but the way you've made her physically strong as well is very cool. I just can't get the image of a strong, buffed-out Tara doing her punching bag work out of my mind.

Not that that's a bad thing to think about.

Xander: "Tara, nice axing." Tara: "My first."

Perhaps you need to take a step back in the creative process area there, Blameburner. That mad scientist laugh was a little too convincing. Exciting, albeit disturbing.

Part 5

Postby blameburner » Mon Sep 23, 2002 12:33 am

Hello all. As you'll see, from this point on things start to diverge more and more from canon. There are certainly parallels, and I'm trying to incorporate some of the flavor of Willow and Tara's early relationship... but since this is AU, I'm going to stop incorporating verbatim dialogue from entire scenes we all know and love. I guess what I'm saying is that some upcoming scenes may feel familiar, but hopefully they'll feel fresh as well. Just FYI. As always, thanks for reading.

Title: The Truth of Deception - Part 5: Objects In Motion

Author: blameburner

Feedback: Sure… Always a plus

Summary: AU, baby! So you all know by now... Tara is part of the Initiative. Plenty of questions remain, however, and the answers will be revealed... eventually.

Spoiler Warning: S4. Everything up to "Hush" is canon. After that, this story veers off. There will be some similarities to S4, but definite differences. Basically, if it happened after "Hush" on the show, assume it didn't happen unless I mention it specifically.

Disclaimer: Not my characters, but oh how I wish they were! Joss, blah, blah, ME, blah, blah.

Rating: Generally R, but some NC-17 (maybe). Just be prepared.

Pairings: W/T, of course.

Angst: Pretty much none, so I'll say 1.

Part 5

Willow stood outside Tara's dorm room, fidgeting nervously. She had been standing there for a good five minutes, tugging at her blouse and skirt, rearranging her bookbag on her shoulder, brushing at her hair impatiently.

The friction between her hair and the sleeve of her sweater had created a static electricity emergency, and it had taken at least thirty seconds of licking her hand and running her saliva-dampened palm over her hair to get it to lay down smoothly again. Great, now people in Tara's dorm are gonna tell Tara about the weird girl lurking outside her door grooming herself like a cat.

As if on cue, a dark haired boy who had passed her in the hallway a few minutes earlier came walking by again, looking at Willow as if she had just sprouted a second head. Willow watched him watch her. She had a sudden urge to hold up her hand like a claw, lunge towards the boy, and hiss. The boy turned the corner, out of sight, and Willow shook her head. This is ridiculous. Just knock on her door already.

Willow raised her hand, took in a deep breath, and knocked.

The door opened quickly, and Willow's breath caught in her chest.

"H-hey, Willow," Tara said softly. Her head hung down slightly, her hair cascading down into a golden frame for her lovely face. She was smiling, peeking up at Willow shyly. It was the sweetest thing Willow had ever seen in her life.

"Hey," Willow smiled back. She felt almost giddy, and had to forcibly stop herself from bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet. She tried to tell herself it was just because she was looking forward to finally having someone to do spells with, but she knew better. It was Tara. It was most definitely all about Tara.

"Um... come in?" Tara said, opening the door a little further and stepping back out of the way. Geez, Tara. Could you sound more like a doofus? 'Come in?' Like it's a question, because Willow might prefer to stand out in the hallway all night.

Willow walked in the room, immediately liking it. The room was painted dark, almost black. Definitely not regulation dorm color, Willow thought. Yet the room was open and warm, with white Christmas lights strung all around and candles lit on every available surface. Willow thought how the light might not have quite the same effect but for the darkness of the walls. It was the contrast between light and dark that made the room so... intense. Special. Magical.

"Wow, your room is really great," she said, stopping in the middle of the room and looking back at Tara.

"Thanks. I like it," Tara said. Willow smiled, but Tara rolled her eyes and dropped her head.

"What?" Willow asked, frowning slightly.

"Huh?" Tara said, somewhat startled. She could tell by the way Willow was looking at her that the redhead had caught her little roll of the eyes. Tara instantly worried that Willow was thinking that the blonde had made that face because of her. "Oh... I... No, I was... I d-didn't mean you, Willow. Y-you said m-my r-room was great, and I s-said 'I like it.' W-which is dumb, you know? Of c-course I like it... I p-painted it and hung the lights, right? S-so I don't know why I-I said that. Dumb," she said, shrugging her shoulders.

"Hey... Tara..." Willow said, her frown now full blown. She moved in front of the blonde, reaching out without even thinking. She slipped a finger underneath Tara's chin and lifted, forcing Tara to meet her eyes. "Not dumb. Don't ever say that again," she said fiercely.

Tara was shocked by the intensity of Willow's words. Willow was defending her against herself, and it made Tara feel... wonderful.

Willow too was shocked by her reaction. Hearing Tara speaking derogatorily about herself had sparked something in Willow, an overwhelming need to protect Tara - even if that meant protecting Tara from herself.

Willow could feel Tara's skin burning into her where her finger still held the blonde's chin. Suddenly Willow realized the intimacy of their situation, and she stepped back, releasing Tara's face. She laughed uncertainly.

Tara felt the loss acute loss of Willow's touch. It pained her soul, but she shook it off. Willow was not ready for such things as Tara wanted. Willow might never be ready. Tara knew she had to accept that. Yet there was something in the way Willow had touched her. Something...

Willow found a chair and sat down, while Tara perched on the edge of her bed.

"So..." Willow said, still reeling from what had just happened. She could still feel the gentle warmth of Tara's breath on her face. Her skin tingled with it. It unnerved her.

"So..." Tara said back, wanting to move beyond the sudden uneasiness that was now touching every surface of the room. "So I was glad you c-called."

Willow found Tara's eyes. "You were?" she asked.

Tara nodded, finding the barest shred of her profound courage and holding on for dear life. "Yes, I was. I am," she said, smiling softly. "Did you have a spell in mind?"

Willow's eyes widened with excitement, her nervousness forgotten. "Oh, yes. It's called 'Floating the Rose,'" she said, moving to kneel on the floor.

"I like roses," Tara said, grinning as she moved to the floor as well.

"Me, too," Willow said, looking up to meet Tara's eyes. "Beautiful," she whispered. Willow didn't know if she was talking about the roses or Tara's eyes. Tara shivered.

"Uh, so, we're going to float the rose in the air. Then we're going to carefully pluck each petal off," she said, setting the rose down inside the sacred circle she had just created. "This is all about synchronicity. We have to be perfectly in tune with each other to perform the spell," Willow said.

"Like in the l-laundry room," Tara said. She still remembered that night with a mixture of awe and reverence. For many reasons.

"Right, like the laundry room," Willow said, remembering that night as well. The room suddenly felt hotter around her, and her heart beat picked up its pace. "Uh... and it should be very pretty," she said, trying to lighten the mood and calm herself down.

Willow reached out her hands. Tara slid her hands into Willow's, and they closed their eyes. The two witches focused on the rose, imagining it lying there in the circle. Their breathing slowed and their hearts each found the other's, meeting in a steady rhythm of comfortable silence.

They could both feel it when the rose began to slowly float off the floor. They opened their eyes once the rose steadied about a foot off the carpet.

"Wow," Willow gasped. "Okay, now for the hard part. Ready?"

"Um... how do we know which petal? I mean... how do we choose the same one?" Tara asked. Absently she noticed her stutter had disappeared, but she was too focused on the spell to give it much thought.

"Oh, uh... good question," Willow said, frowning. She hadn't thought about that. "I guess that's sort of the point," she said, "to see how in sync we are?"

"You mean like the boy band?" Tara asked. She couldn't resist.

Willow looked at her for a moment, then promptly burst out laughing. Tara started laughing, too. The rose fell limply to the carpet.

"Oh, W-Willow, I'm s-so s-s-sorry," Tara said sincerely, her laughter dying at the sight of the rose hitting the floor. She knew the redhead had really wanted to do the spell.

"It's okay," Willow said, still giggling. She sobered when she saw that Tara was upset. "Oh, Tara, really. It's okay." She took Tara's hand, unable to fight the urgent need to comfort the blonde. To reassure her.

Tara looked down at her hand in Willow's and smiled. It was amazing how just a simple touch from the redhead could soothe her.

"It's just a spell, Tara. It doesn't matter," Willow said, slowly running small circles with her thumb over the back of Tara's hand. "We can try it again some other time. I'm perfectly happy just to sit here with you, laughing. Spending time..." Willow trailed off, realizing once again what a sudden, intense shift their time together had taken.

She started to let go of Tara's hand and pull her own hand back, but Tara stopped her, curling her fingers around Willow's. She squeezed lightly, catching Willow's eyes, offering some of the same reassurance Willow had just offered her. She could feel Willow's uneasiness, and for a second she thought that maybe Willow was fighting her feelings for the blonde. Then she thought better of it. That's silly, Tara. That would mean she actually has feelings for you, which she doesn't. Not the way you want her to.

Tara released Willow's hand and moved to withdraw her own. Yet this time it was Willow who would not let go, as the redhead reached out with her other hand and covered Tara's, effectively trapping it between both her own. Tara once again looked up into Willow's eyes. Willow met her gaze, and both women smiled.

Neither of them had the courage to see the truth for themselves, but together they might just have the courage to see the truth for each other.

*************************

"Willow! Hey!" Buffy Summers practically attacked Willow as she walked through the door of their dorm room, enveloping the redhead in a giant bear-hug. "I haven't seen you all day!"

"Well, hi to you too, Buffy," Willow said, quite taken aback by her best friends over-the-top greeting. She pulled back from Buffy and eyed her warily. "Wait a second... did you use up all my highlighters to draw little bunnies and flowers in your notebook? Again? Buffy, I told you before, highlighters-"

"Are not the same thing as markers, colored pencils, or even crayons. I know, Wil, I know," Buffy said, interrupting Willow's mini-lecture. "No, I didn't use up all your highlighters," she said with a roll of the eyes and a snort. "Like I'd make that mistake after last time." Buffy made a mental note to get up early and go buy Willow a new package of highlighters before the hacker's morning class. The last thing Buffy wanted was Willow coming back from class all cranky because all her highlighters were used up. Again.

"I should think not, missy," Willow said, snickering. She walked over and dropped her bag next to her bed. When she turned around, Buffy was practically standing on her toes.

"Buffy!" Willow said slightly annoyed, "What is going on with you? How many sodas have you had today?"

"Ask me what I did today," Buffy said, grinning from ear to ear, although she did take the hint and backed off slightly, sitting on the foot of Willow's bed.

"Okay, I give. Buffy, what did you do today?" Willow asked in a sing-song voice.

"I got initiated into the Initiative!" she said rapidly..

"You did who with the what now?" Willow asked.

Willow already knew that Riley was part of the commando group on campus, the Initiative, and that Professor Walsh was head of the group.

"Riley took me to a meeting with Professor Walsh," Buffy explained. "We talked about the whole Slayer thing, about the Initiative, and they want me to join up. I'm getting super secret government clearance and everything. Isn't that exciting?"

"Yeah, I guess," Willow said uncertainly.

"Geez, Wil, could you be a little less supportive?" Buffy asked.

"Sorry," Willow mumbled. "I'm just worried, that's all."

"Worried about what?" Buffy asked, confused. "With the Initiative backing me up, patrolling will be a heck of a lot safer, right? Plus I get to spend quality Riley time. Isn't that all of the good?"

Willow thought for a moment. She was a little jealous of the implications of Buffy working with the Initiative - implications such as that Buffy wouldn't need Willow to patrol with her anymore. Sure, Willow didn't really patrol with Buffy now, but at least there was the option. But, Buffy was right - patrolling would be safer with the Initiative backing her up, and for that Willow was grateful. Willow couldn't help but wonder, though, if Buffy was really going to have the kind of control over the situation that she seemed to think she would have. Buffy really hated taking orders.

"No, you're right," Willow said, deciding to be supporto-gal. "That's great, Buffy. Extra resources, extra Riley time. It works out nicely that you and Riley are in the same profession."

"Doesn't it, though?" Buffy agreed, grinning from ear to ear. "So, friend of friends, what did you do today? I really haven't seen you all day."

"Who, me?" Willow sputtered slightly. "Uh... library. All day. You know me. Books, lots of reading, happy Willow."

"But it's ten o'clock! You've been at the library since this morning!" Buffy said, shocked.

"No, doofus," Willow said, amused by Buffy's horror at the thought of spending the entire day in the library. "I had class until three. Today's my long day, remember?"

"Oh, right," Buffy said, relieved. Then her horror returned. "So you mean to tell me you've been at the library since three o'clock this afternoon!"

"Uh... yeah. Straight to the library, that was me. Just zipped right from class to the library, uh-huh," Willow babbled, lying through her teeth. The redhead hadn't realized she'd been at Tara's for nearly seven hours. It certainly hadn't seemed that long. After the spell, and once they finally let go of each other's hands, they had just spent the rest of the day talking. Books, movies, the best kind of junk food to go with books and movies... no subject had been deemed too silly. It had been wonderful.

"Oh, Willow," Buffy said sadly, shaking her head. "One of these days I'm going to convince you that there is life outside of studying. Alright, I'm gonna go grab a quick shower."

Willow gave Buffy a self-depreciating smile. Buffy grabbed her shower bag and walked out the door.

Willow sunk down on the edge of her bed, putting her head in her hands. She had no idea why she had just lied to Buffy. She had told Buffy about Tara, about them running for their lives and the laundry room and the soda machine. She had told Buffy about Tara having been at the Wicca group, about how Tara was a witch and had come looking for her to do a spell to restore their voices, and that she and Tara might get together down the road and try some spells, if they had time to get together. Willow had made it sound so nonchalant.

What she hadn't told Buffy was the connection she had felt with Tara, the connection that no matter how much she wanted to ignore it, went beyond mere magic. Yes, they were two witches who were incredibly powerful together. Yes, Willow did want to do spells with Tara, to see how far their power could take them. But that wasn't all Willow wanted, if she allowed herself to think that far.

Willow wanted to spend time with Tara. To get to know her. To hear her voice and see her smile. To look into her eyes and suddenly feel safe. Willow already knew so much about the blonde witch. She knew that Tara was gentle and kind and compassionate, intelligent and funny and courageous. She also knew that just being in the same room with Tara made her feel like everything in her life was... right.

She couldn't explain it, but the uneasiness that had plagued Willow all her life just fell away when Tara was near. The unworthiness, uncertainty, and uselessness that always haunted her simply disintegrated with just a look or a touch from the blonde. Tara made Willow feel better about being Willow. Tara made Willow feel special and needed and... loved.

Loved? Loved!?! Where in the frilly heck are you getting this from, Rosenberg? Tara is not in love with you. That's just silly. And even if she was, it wouldn't matter. It would be sweet and a big compliment that someone as special as Tara was in love with you, but it wouldn't matter. It would be wondrous and amazing to have her... wait, wait, it doesn't matter. Tara's a girl, and you like boys. Hello! Oz... Xander... Miss Calendar... no, no, Miss Calendar was just a role model. Oh, dear Lord...

Willow groaned out loud. When had life suddenly gotten so complicated? And why was it that even though it was making her head spin, she really didn't mind the complication?

The scene where they are each reluctant to let go of the other's hand was so lovely.

Willow chastising Buffy about the highlighters was funny. How dare she tamper with the different colored pen system by using the highlighters in a non-official way!

Glad Willow examined why she felt the need to lie to Buffy about where she had been.

The entire scene between Tara and Willow was wonderful. You wrote their tension so well, especially Willow 'defending Tara against herself'. LOL I loved that! Both of them were adorable.

Part 6

Postby blameburner » Mon Sep 23, 2002 7:03 pm

Okay, this part got pretty introspective. I think it's important, though. I small bit of this will be familiar. The scene you'll recognize was extremely important on the show, and it is equally important here. I've changed the bulk of the dialogue, to tailor it more towards this story. But there were a couple of lines, well, I just couldn't change. I mean, how can you improve on perfection? (The show's perfection, certainly not mine!)

***barnabasvamp - You're prepared to beg a lot? *rubs palms together wickedly* You know, anyone suggesting panty throwing would not be accused of crazy-talk...

***mollyig - I think one of the beautiful parts about this part of their relationship was their reluctance, on so many levels. Because their reluctance speaks of the level of their connection, I think - what they feel is so new and powerful, it frightens them a little.

***Tulipp - You like that line, huh? Hehe. It was totally a last minute addition, so I'm glad it worked!

***xita - I totally agree! That's always why I thought she lied from the very beginning - because even though she didn't want to know, she knew... ya know?

***Grimaldi - Well, I was gonna have them finish the spell, but I'm a big fan of hand-holding, so...

***Murasaki S - That's one of the thing I love about writing any W/T fic - all the little jokes I just know you all will actually get!

***ally02 - How can highlighter overprotection be wrong? *G*

***vix84 - Glad it's what you needed. It's hard to translate all the little looks Aly and Amber give Willow and Tara, but I try...

***BFR from Paris - Mine was my Eighth grade English teacher. Sigh.

***MissQuirky - Well, ya didn't have to wait too long!

***XWickedXWiccan - Yeah, Ms. Calendar was swoon-worthy, wasn't she?

***MadeinNZ - You liked that line? Well, that was my favorite, too. *G*

Part 6

A couple of weeks had passed since Willow and Tara had floated the rose. A couple of glorious, magnificent weeks. Willow had seen Tara practically every day, sometimes only for a few minutes, sometimes for hours. They had done a few more spells together, nothing major, all of it pretty basic casting.

Most of the time, though, they had simply sat talking. Talking and laughing and sharing stories and secrets. Willow had told Tara all about Buffy being the Slayer, about the Scoobies and their adventures in high school. Tara had told Willow about her family, about growing up in northern California, and about her mom dying two years earlier.

That had been a particularly emotional night, the pain of the loss still fresh on the blonde's tender soul. Willow could tell that Tara liked to think she had it all under control, but it was obvious that the wounds were still raw. Her mother's death had not yet scarred her, because the wounds had not yet begun to heal. Willow could tell, too, that Tara was holding back. She wasn't sure what, but she knew there was something... something.

But no matter how much time she spent with the blonde, it never seemed like enough. All Willow could think of was the next time she'd be able to see Tara. To be near her. To see the smile that warmed her heart and pushed back the shadows of her own tortured youth. To be sure, Willow had not suffered the physical loss of a parent, yet her own loss was just as real. Just as profound.

Willow had spent her whole life seeking her parents' love, but she had always missed out. She was sure that deep down, somewhere lurking in the depths, was the affection she so desperately sought. Yet it had always been, and it still remained, hidden. Willow supposed that it always would.

So Willow had turned elsewhere, turned to others to find the approval that would make her complete. Make her whole. But she hadn't found it. No matter how hard she tried, no matter how accessible or funny or helpful she tried to be, it was never good enough. She was always the outsider, always the geeky little girl who was too smart, unless of course someone needed her to tutor them or do their homework.

So intelligence and education had become her avenue of tacit acceptance, her own means of escape. She worked hard and lived for those sporadic moments when someone would need her. When they needed her, she was accepted, if only for a little while. And that had been okay. Willow had accepted the world as it was and her role in it. That is, until Buffy came along and showed her the real world.

Buffy had been Willow's lifeboat in the raging sea of insecurity. Buffy had befriended her, not because she needed something from Willow, but because she actually liked the shy redhead. For the first time in Willow's life, someone had seen who she was, who she truly was, and had not run off in the other direction screaming.

Or so Willow had thought. Yes, Buffy was her best friend. Yes, she and Buffy had shared a lot, about themselves and about the world around them. Yes, Buffy loved her. But meeting Tara made Willow realize that Buffy didn't really know Willow, not completely.

It wasn't Buffy's fault, though. It was Willow's, because as much as Willow trusted Buffy, she had never opened herself up completely. She had never allowed Buffy in to all the secret corners of her heart, to see all the fear and doubt that lay within. This was who Willow really was, and she feared the day that Buffy saw down to the depths of her insecurities. For on that day, Willow knew, Buffy would realize she'd been wasting her time, and she, too, would run away screaming.

And then along came Tara. Tara who had spent countless hours with Willow, just talking. Tara who had made Willow feel like anything was possible. Tara who in just a few weeks already knew more about Willow than anyone, maybe even Buffy and Xander. Tara who made Willow feel like she could strip herself completely bare, and everything would be okay. Tara who would not run away screaming.

Willow looked over at the blonde from where she lay on the bed on her stomach. Tara was sitting cross legged on the floor, her eyes glued to her Art History book. Willow loved to watch Tara study. She had spent a lot of time doing that, just watching Tara. When they weren't talking or doing spells, they were studying - though truthfully, Willow often went home and had to spend many hours reading in order to make up for the time she was supposed to be studying with Tara but spent watching her instead.

Willow didn't mind, though. It was totally worth a little lost sleep. She couldn't help but smile as Tara bit her bottom lip and chewed thoughtfully, obviously intent on what she was reading. That's my girl, Willow thought. Wait a minute... my girl? Oh boy, here we go again.

She was about to launch into yet another internal Willow-babble about how Tara was a girl and she, Willow Rosenberg, didn't like girls, when Tara looked up. Uh-oh, Willow thought. She caught me staring. Then Tara smiled, and all rational thought was lost to Willow.

"Uh..." Willow sputtered. "Whatcha doin'?"

"Playing soccer," Tara said with a straight face.

"That's good. Wait... huh?" Willow said, completely confused. Tara laughed, and Willow grinned sheepishly. "Oh, yeah, well... I suppose the book on your lap should have been a dead giveaway, huh? Well, you know me, all with the asking of questions before I think."

Tara laughed again. "I think it's cute," she said. Her smile was as big in the inside as it was on the outside. In the weeks they had spent together, Tara's stutter had almost completely disappeared. It had been strange, really, how it had even come back in the first place. Until she met Willow, Tara hadn't stuttered since her early days in the Initiative. Now the stutter only re-emerged occasionally, when she and Willow were talking about particularly intense things. Or when Tara had to lie.

Thankfully, Tara had not had to lie too often, at least not to Willow. Really, she had only lied when they had talked about the time after her mother's death, and even then, it had been a lie of omission. Tara had simply left out the parts about her joining the Initiative. Still, no matter how she tried to rationalize it, omitting things didn't make them any less lies.

Actually, she had been lying more to Maggie Walsh than to Willow. Tara had submitted two reports now, detailing the spells they had done and the progress of their relationship. Except once again, Tara had omitted things. She hadn't told Maggie that they spent more time talking than doing spells, or that they had become quite close in the previous weeks. Better Maggie not know all the details, Tara had decided.

It had disturbed her, though, that she was lying to her superior. Her mentor. Her savior. She owed Maggie so much, but there was just something about all of this that bothered her. Something... something. She had considered that it might just be a simple matter of her feelings for Willow, that her emotions were clouding her judgment and causing her to make bad decisions. After all, she had a job to do. A duty. And yet here she was, shirking that duty, all because she had the hots for Willow.

But there was more to it than that, she knew, no matter how much she didn't want to know. There was the fact that she, Tara MaClay, was falling in love with Willow Rosenberg. She had tried to talk herself out of it, but her heart had just put in earplugs and refused to listen. This wonderful, amazing, caring, intelligent, funny, beautiful woman had captivated her heart, and Tara had no choice but to follow where her heart led. Damn the consequences.

And still, there was even more to it. It wasn't just love that made Tara lie to Maggie. It was that the entire situation didn't sit well with the blonde. Ever since the day Maggie had come to her front door, Tara had always believed in her duty. But this... this just wasn't right.

That day, Tara had invited Maggie into her father's home, and she had listened as Maggie explained what had happened the previous night. Tara had saved three of her agents from a werewolf. And she had used magic to do it. Tara just sat and listened as Maggie explained about how the Initiative had been created to assess and stop the demon threat. "There are demons in the world'" Maggie had said, "as real as you or I sitting here in this room. And they are out there hurting people. They must be stopped."

"What c-can I do?" Tara had asked. "I'm n-n-nobody."

"That's not true, Tara," Maggie had said. "I've researched your lineage. You've had a witch in your family for every generation in the last five hundred years. You have a proud, powerful heritage. Your mother taught you, didn't she?" Tara had nodded.

"Good. We need people like you, Tara. We have technology, funding, and some highly intelligent people. But there are forces at work that right now we just don't have access to, or even thorough understandings of. Forces that are being used against us, that we have no defense against. Forces that are getting stronger every day. We need to harness those forces, Tara. And we need people like you to do it," Maggie had explained.

"But s-surely someone e-else, s-someone w-w-with..."

"No, Tara. You. We need you," Maggie had said with conviction. "You have more strength than you know. And I'm not just talking about magical strength. Last night you ran into a situation you had no understanding of, and you saved the lives of three men."

"S-Stupid," Tara had muttered.

"Courageous," Maggie had countered. "What you did took guts, Tara. It took strength. I need that strength. Your strength. Or I fear we've already lost."

Just then, Tara's father had walked in the house. "What in the hell is going on here?" he had bellowed.

"Mr. MaClay, my name is-"

"I don't care what your name is, lady," Mr. MaClay had said angrily, turning to Tara. "And you! You get your butt upstairs, right now!"

In a moment that seemed like forever, Tara had realized that this was her chance. Her one and only chance for a different life. A better life. And she had grabbed it with both hands. "No," she had said simply yet defiantly, with all the strength she could muster.

"What did you say to me?" her father had said, disbelieving.

"I said no," she said, with even more conviction.

"Why you little bitch!" he had shouted, lunging at his daughter. he didn't know what hit him. He suddenly found himself on his back on the floor, with three very large men aiming three very large guns at his head.

"I wouldn't advise that, Mr. MaClay," Maggie had said warningly, with just a hint of amusement. "You see, it's a federal offense to threaten an agent of the United States Government."

Mr. MaClay hadn't said anything. He had been too scared to move, lest he upset the big, angry looking men with the guns.

Maggie had turned to Tara, putting a hand on her shoulder. She had asked Tara if she was okay, and Tara had nodded that she was, unable to tear her eyes away from her father lying on the ground. He looked as scared as she has felt all her life, but it brought her no comfort. She only felt pity for him. Maggie guided Tara to the door, and just before she walked through it for the last time, she had turned to her father and had simply said, "Good-bye, Daddy."

It had been more than two years since that day, and she had never regretted her decision. The Initiative had helped her find her inner strength, had shown her how to use her power, had given her something to fight for. The Initiative had always represented what was good in the world, at least until now. Now Tara felt as though an infection had set in, poisoning what had once been honest and true. She didn't know why or what, but there was something... something.

So Tara did the best she could, balancing her duty and loyalty to the Initiative and to Maggie against that which was tugging at her soul. Willow.

"You do?" Willow asked, bringing Tara back to the present. "You think... it's cute?"

Uh-oh, Tara worried. Way to push things too far. "Um... yeah?" she said uncertainly. Willow's bright smile in response set Tara's mind at ease.

"So... should we get back to studying?" Tara asked, hoping the redhead would say no.

Willow groaned and flopped dramatically face-first onto her physics book. "No! No more!" she yelled, her voice muffled by her arms.

Tara giggled, then stood and walked over to the bed. She laid down on her side, resting in an elbow. "I'm telling you, you should take drama next semester."

Willow propped her chin up on her palm to face Tara. "Ya think? I could do drama. I could be all big with the dramatic."

"Really? Gee, I wouldn't have guessed," Tara laughed.

"Oh, I see," Willow said. "You're making fun of me, aren't you?"

"Who, me?" Tara said with feigned innocence. "Never."

"Uh-huh," Willow said. "I'm not buying it. You know what that means..." she said with a devilish glint in her eyes.

"Willow..." Tara warned, but to no avail. Willow pounced, tickling Tara with all her might. She pinned the blonde between her knees, making Tara squirm as she ravaged her sides. After a good solid two minutes, Willow relented, moving back to sit on her haunches.

Tara seized the opportunity and flipped Willow onto her back, pinning her hands above her head. "Now we'll see who gets the last tickle!" she laughed.

Willow laughed too, but quickly stopped as she noticed the nearness of Tara's face to her own. Time seemed to stand still as the two girls stared into each other's eyes. Tara felt as though she were caught in Willow's gravitational orbit, unable to do anything but descend. Her head lowered slowly, and she wondered if she was imagining that Willow's head was rising towards hers. She paused for the briefest of seconds and licked her lips, imagining what Willow's were going to feel like against her own.

The pause in Tara's descent snapped Willow out of her trance, and she panicked. She shifted out from underneath the blonde, who was too stunned to put up any resistance. Oh, Goddess, Tara thought as she watched Willow stalk across the room, I pushed too hard. Hell, I shouldn't have been pushing at all.

Willow picked up the phone and called Giles. It was all she could think of to do. There was no answer. She turned back towards Tara, who looked as miserable as Tara felt. Willow would have slapped herself upside the head if she wasn't afraid it would freak Tara out any more than she was probably already freaked. Nice going, Rosenberg, she mentally berated herself. How many times do you need to be reminded? You. Like. Boys. End of discussion. And now you've managed to upset Tara by putting moves on her...

"Sorry, I... uh... just remembered I needed to check in with Giles," Willow said lamely. "I've been out of touch all day, ya know? It's good to check in."

"O-Of course," Tara agreed, sitting up on the bed. "I-It's not l-like any of the S-Scoobies know w-where you a-are."

Willow frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Uh..." Tara said, "well, I mean, t-they don't even know I exist, r-right?"

Suddenly this situation had gone from bad to worse, and Willow felt horrible. First she had practically attacked Tara on the bed. And what was that all about, anyway? Had Willow really been about to kiss Tara? Willow knew, but she didn't want to know. She returned her thoughts to berating herself over her treatment of Tara.

"Tara... I..."

"Willow, it's o-okay," Tara said gently. The last thing she wanted was for Willow to feel any worse than she already did. "I just... it's really okay," she said again, this time her voice strong and sure. She could be strong for Willow.

Willow sat down next to Tara, taking her hand. "I'm sorry, Tara," Willow said sincerely. "I never thought about it that way. It's not like I don't want my friends to know you. I just... it's like there's all this craziness, you know? In my life and in my head? And then... then there's you, and you're like this calm force. You make me feel... safe. And I guess... I guess I'm being all selfish girl, because I don't want to share that with anyone, you know?"

Willow squeezed Tara's hand. "I kinda like having something that's just... you know... mine?"

Tara placed her other hand over Willow's. "I am, you know," she said softly.

Willow looked directly into Tara's eyes. "What?"

"Yours," Tara answered softly.

Willow couldn't help the shiver that ran down her spine. Mine, she thought.

Part 6

Postby vix84 » Mon Sep 23, 2002 7:21 pm

Noooooo...

Why did Tara pause? Silly girl! They were nearly with the kissage and all... *frown*

Woohoo! You used my favourite line ever, I Am You Know...Yours. They are so very cute together, and I love your different version of season four.

As for Maggie, I don't know what to think. It was great when Tara's father was stopped by the men (very funny), but she freaks me out.

Great update!

God, yes. Willow's reflections here about trust and friendship just ring painfully true. Especially tonight, on the verge of the new season starting, it seems that you have articulated so well what Tara represented to Willow from the beginning...that unreserved trust that she got from no one else. Finally, someone she didn't have to be afraid would leave her when they found out what she was really like, at least in her imagination.

That's just it. Thanks for getting it just right tonight.

hehe, all that pent up frustration...where will all of it go? *innocent smile* *cough* okay, back!

i liked the flashback about how Tara left home! i like that she stood up for her dad and everything...and i am glad that Maggie helped her out, even if it wasn't for Tara's own welfare. I can be happy with Maggie and still not like her...right?

Ugh! That sort of reminded me of Tabula Rasa. :heart

The scene is sort of a combination of WAY and TR. :heart Good job.

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.
Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Willow: Hi, um Tara. I was wondering maybe you want to go out some time for coffee? food? Kisses and gay love?

Wonderful insight into Willow's mind there, her search for acceptance. Interesting how meeting Tara has shown Willow that her friendship with Buffy isn't as profound as she once thought. Indeed that Willow herself had kept something of herself back, to share with someone more deserving. Someone whose name begins with T perhaps

Tara's thoughts show us that she's aware she should feel guilty for lying to Walsh, her sense of loyalty is strong. But she believes her feelings for Willow are not her only reason for doing this, her instincts are guiding her, and its nice to see her trust them.

The almost kiss reminiscent of Tabula Rasa. So close! And the altered dialogue from "Who Are You" worked really well.

Loved your exploration of Willow's thoughts here. Not just about crushes, (Ms. Calendar, hee hee), but also about friendships, love and such. Buffy and the highlighters was funny too.

OOH BB:

I'm sooo loving Willow's thoughts about finally meeting someone she is willing to open up completely to - could be so true. Always like to hear the words form the "Yours" scene. :drool

And since you have chosen to tease us(poor Tara)it's your turn:

Now....about the "panty throwing" issue(:shock )......( as she slowly unzips her jeans). I've begged before with much success, however I'm excited about the prospect of what might happen when the panties fly :blush

Update soon?

Wonderful update. I always love fics that take the time to stop and look at what's going on in the characters' head. Great insights into what Tara represents for Willow vs. her friendship with Buffy. It's good also to understand what Tara is going through herself, her conflict between her growing attraction to Willow and her perceived duty to her mentor.

The tickle fest part was very cute, great segueway into a brilliant scene from the show. These two are so adorable :)

Great story!
