Happily Ever After (sequel to The Outing)

Postby Mainer » Fri Aug 02, 2002 11:20 am

This is a sequel to the The Outing

Title:Happily Ever After

Rating: PG-13

Disclaimer: All characters belong to Joss Whedon.

Notes: Just a short comment about time frame. This story begins a year after The Outing ended.

Part One

Tara hurried around the kitchen putting the finishing touches on Willow's breakfast. She removed the last two pancakes from the pan, and dropped two eggs in. She straightened the table cloth, set the table, and placed a vase with a single red rose in the center. Tara then took a pitcher of orange juice and the stack of pancakes to the table. She went back to the stove and took the eggs off the burner and put them on a plate, carrying the plate to the table. 'There everything looks perfect,' Tara thought.

"What's all this?" Willow asked coming into the kitchen and dropping her bag by the back door.

"A special breakfast for your first day of school," Tara said.

"Is that the reason I woke up to no morning snuggles?" Willow asked.

"You don't like your special breakfast?" Tara asked, her smile fading.

"No, baby, I love my breakfast," Willow said wrapping her arms around Tara. "I just love my Tara snuggles too. We'll just have to make up for the lost morning snuggles tonight."

"You should eat, you don't have that long before you have to leave," Tara said leading Willow to the table and pulling out a chair for her, before sitting down herself.

"I can't believe classes start today. It seems like they just ended," Willow said sipping her juice.

"I'm going to miss you all day," Tara said.

"It's weird not having you go to school with me," Willow said. "Plus I feel like it's all my fault that you have to miss this year."

"Will, it took both of us to do this," Tara said patting her rather large belly. "So what if I miss a year of school. I'll just graduate a year later."

"I know, but you know I don't like alterations to my plans. I wanted to be out of school before we had kids. We just had our first anniversary."

"These things happen," Tara said smiling, "and I couldn't be happier."

"Me too. I mean I'm worried and scared, but I'm thrilled beyond belief," Willow said.

"I'm glad, and stop worrying so much. Everything's gonna be fine," Tara said. "Finish up, you're gonna be late."

"Do I hafta go?" Willow asked pouting.

"You could always stay here and hang out with me and Anya."

"Okay I'm going to class," Willow said taking her dishes to the sink. "I'll be home around one. Have a good day. I'll miss you. I'll miss you too," Willow said leaning down and planting a kiss on Tara's belly.

"Bye sweetie, we'll see you later," Tara said. She could't help but smile as she watched Willow back down the driveway. The fairy tale just kept getting better. She finished cleaning up the breakfast dishes, and then headed upstairs to what was quickly becoming the nursery. They had finished the painting a couple days ago, and Tara was in the process of painting a mural with flowers, trees, and fairies on one of the walls. The furniture was in boxes, still unassembled, but at least it was there. They had yet to by any clothes or toys, mostly because Willow hadn't wanted to jinx anything, but now that Tara was in her final month she was having a hard time restraining herself. She rather enjoyed this role of wife and mother, and though she hadn't told Willow yet, she wasn't sure she wanted to go back to school. She just couldn't picture herself leaving her baby while she attended classes for two more years. She enjoyed the special time she spent with her mother, while her father was at work, and she wanted to have those special times with her own children.

"Tara."

"I'm upstairs in the baby's room, Anya," Tara called down to her friend.

"Well come down, I can't make it up the stairs," Anya said sinking into the sofa.

Tara just shook her head and laughed, and started back down the stairs.

"Anya if I can climb the stairs, you can climb the stairs. I'm bigger than you," Tara said sitting next to Anya.

"Yes, but you were clearly made for this, I was not."

"All women were made to be able to do this," Tara said.

"Well not me," Anya huffed.

"Have you and Xander moved everything into the new apartment yet?" Tara asked not wanting Anya to get into another one of her how much pregnancy sucks speeches.

"Yes, he finally got all of his stuff out of the basement. I wanted to use the second bedroom as my closet, but he insists that the baby has a room," Anya said. "How selfish is that? I carry this thing for nine months, it pops out and gets its own room, while I'm stuck sharing closet space with Xander."

"The baby does need somewhere to sleep," Tara said gently, not wanting to upset Anya any further.

"But an entire room for such a tiny human?"

"They do grow," Tara said trying to hide her amusement.

"I'm happy you can mock me. You're lucky you know. You have this large house, and a husband who takes care of you. Willow is the husband right?"

"It doesn't really work that way," Tara said, "but if what you're getting at is that Willow is the one with the job, then yes. Xander has a job, a good job, and isn't he the one who pays the rent?"

"Yes, but he didn't buy me a pretty house, or an engagement ring," Anya protested.

"Xander proposed?"

"No."

"Then why would he get you a ring?" Tara asked.

"Because I am carrying his child," Anya said. "Is it not traditional to marry the woman you've knocked up? I've eviscerated men for doing that."

"It's not mandatory anymore. I think he'll propose after the baby is born. Does it even really matter if he never marries you as long as he loves you, and takes care of you and the baby?" Tara asked.

"Yes it matters. Do you know how much money you can save on your taxes by being married? Of course you don't it doesn't work that way for you and Willow."

"You can save money on your taxes for that?"

"After we have these kids I'm going to teach you all about the fine art of accounting. That way you'll be better at maintaining your household budget, and I won't have to do your taxes for free every year," Anya said. "Isn't it time for lunch yet? I'm starving."

"It's ten thirty."

"Close enough," Anya said. "Let's dock this pregnancy ship in the kitchen."

Willow walked through the back door into the kitchen and dropped her bag. She grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and padded through the house looking for Tara. Today had been way too long. She wasn't used to having lunch without her, or not being able to grab some afternoon smoochies, but part of her kind of liked coming home and knowing Tara was waiting there for her. Even though currently she couldn't find her. Willow thought she heard the television coming from the family room and headed that direction. She peeked into the room and saw Tara laying on the sofa sound asleep. Willow tip toed over quietly to where Tara lay sleeping. She knelt down next to the sofa and just watched her sleep for a few minutes. She gently brushed away some stray hair that had fallen across Tara's face.

"Willow," Tara said smiling.

"Hi, baby. Did you have a good nap?"

"Yeah, I missed you," Tara answered groggily.

"I missed you too. You still look sleepy, why don't you go back to bed," Willow said.

"No, I promised Dawn I would have cookies for her when she got here. It must be almost time for school to get out. I have to make them. I must have fallen asleep after Anya left."

"You can make cookies for Dawn another time," Willow said. "She'll probably be coming here getting baby sat until she's eighteen."

"No, I'm awake now," Tara said. "Plus I kinda have to use the bathroom. You know baby sitting on bladder. Help me up," Tara said sitting and reaching her hands toward Willow. "It's a good thing you're home or I might never have got off the sofa."

"I'm glad I could help," Willow said.

"Are you gonna call Xander and have him put togther the baby furniture?" Tara asked gathering the ingredients for the cookies. "We really should get that stuff put together soon."

"I'm gonna do it this weekend," Willow said popping some chocolate chips into her mouth.

"You're gonna do it?"

"It can't be that hard," Willow said. "If I can build a computer, I should be able to assemble a few pieces of baby furniture, right?"

I knew that everyone was gonna want to know how Tara got pregnant, and that question is sort of answered in the next part which will be up in a couple days. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to reveal the whole story behind it or not.

Title: Happily Ever After

Rating:PG-13

Disclaimer: All characters belong to Joss Whedon.

"Finished yet?" Tara asked coming in to the nursery.

"I would be if these damn instructions were written in English," Willow said throwing the useless booklet across the room. Tara walked over and picked up the instructions and looked them over.

"Sweetie, they are in English."

"No they're not. They're written in some weird carpenter language."

"The pictures don't help?" Tara asked.

"The pictures all look the same to me," Willow said.

"Maybe it's time to call Xander," Tara said placing her hand on Willow's shoulder.

"No, this is my job. I have to do this."

"Why?"

"Because this is the way it's supposed to be. Don't you see that? Anya has the baby, Xander builds the furniture, and goes to work. This is my job. You have the baby, I go to work and put the furniture together. That's just the way it is. I can do this. I can take care of you and the baby," Willow said near tears.

"Will, this is not your job. Putting together baby furniture has nothing to do with your ability to provide for our family. I don't care who puts this stuff together. What I care about is who's there for me when I go into labor, and who's there at three in the morning when I'm tired and the baby needs to be fed or changed, and quite frankly I don't want that to be Xander," Tara said pulling Willow onto her feet so she could look her in the eyes. "I want that to be you, and I know that you will be there for me, and the baby."

"Basically you're saying you love me even though I can't do this, and you want me to call Xander," Willow said.

"Exactly," Tara said.

"Fine, you win, but I'm gonna help him, and when the next baby is born, I'm putting this stuff together."

"Guys are you here?" Xander asked walking into his best friends house. "You called me so you should be." Ever since the time he walked in and caught them having sex in the kitchen, he made sure to announce his presence, despite their open door policy with their friends. Sometimes he still couldn't believe this was Willow's house. She seemed so much more grown up than him. Even though they were both going to be parents, she was just so much more confident and sure of everything. He still didn't know how Tara had gotten pregnant, they said they didn't want to share the details when they made the announcement to everyone. All he knew for sure was that Willow was the "father". He didn't understand it, but he was sure it had something to do with magic, unless of course Willow had some rather large secret she'd been keeping all these years. He figured that was the reason Willow and Tara were so calm about this baby thing, because unlike he and Anya, they had planned it.

"We're upstairs in the nursery," Willow called down. She had to stifle a giggle as she looked at Tara. They had figured they had more time before Xander arrived, and now she had a very frustrated Tara glaring at her for having given away their position and for having convinced her to start something in the first place. "We can finish later," Willow said quietly and giving Tara a coy smile.

"If I let you. Now help me off the floor."

"Hey guys, the nursery looks great," Xander said peeking his head into the room before walking in. "Did you paint that?" He asked Tara referring to the mural.

"Yeah," Tara said placing her hands in Willow's so she could pull her off the floor.

"That's really good. Do you think you could do something at my place?" Xander asked. "The walls seem really plain. Anya insisted on painting them a really pale yellow, just in case the room becomes her closet."

"Sure," Tara said now back on her feet. "Is Anya there? I could go take a look while you guys do this."

"Yeah, she's there. She says she's never leaving again, and that even if she wanted to, she wouldn't be able to fit through the door," Xander said much to the amusement of Willow and Tara.

"I'll talk to her. I can bring her back and you guys can stay for dinner," Tara said. "I love you, and when I come back I want to see this room finished," Tara said giving Willow a quick kiss before heading out.

"Why is she not acting as crazy as Anya?" Xander asked.

"Regular Anya is completely insane, so why would pregnant Anya be any different," Willow said. "Now I got orders so where do we start?"

"You are so whipped," Xander said laughing.

"I'm whipped? You're the one at the twenty four hour market every night buying sardines at one o'clock in the morning."

"And how did you know I was there?" Xander asked.

"Fine, we're both whipped," Willow said. "Now tell me what to do."

"Hand me the Phillips head screw driver," Xander said extending his up turned hand to Willow.

"The what now?" Willow asked.

"How do you propose you're going to help me if you don't even know basic tools?"

"For your information Alexander Lavelle Harris, I do know some tools, just not by their fancy names. Now do you want the one that looks like the minus sign, or the one that looks kinda like a plus sign?" Willow asked holding up both screw drivers.

"The plus sign."

"See, not so hard."

"Level with me. How did you get Tara pregnant?" Xander asked having almost completed the changing table in less than ten minutes.

"Xander, do you really think that's appropriate? You're starting to sound like Anya. That means you're spending way too much time with her. Have you considered taking a break from her? You could stay here and sleep in an extra room. I'm sure Tara wouldn't mind. Buffy stays here sometimes and she doesn't care about that. Speaking of Buffy, did you know that we have two classes together this semester? Which is weird cause last year we didn't have any."

"Will," Xander said putting up his hand to stop her. "I don't need a break from Anya. I had no idea you and Buffy have two classes together, and you're dodging my question."

"Okay, I'll tell you," Willow said taking a deep breath. "We had sex."

"You're not funny," Xander said.

"I'm serious that's what we did," Willow said.

"No, Anya and I had sex, you and Tara had to have done something different," Xander said. "I may have only passed science with a D, but I know that a woman can not get another woman pregnant without doing something out of the ordinary."

"There might have been some magic involved," Willow said.

"I can't believe you guys planned this now," Xander said.

"We didn't," Willow said.

"How could you not have?"

"Look, I can't talk to you about this. Tara and I decided we don't want anyone to know the details. It's a very private thing. It would be like me asking where you were and how you did it when you got Anya pregnant, and before you answer I don't want to know," Willow said. "I'm not keeping this from you. It's just something we don't want to share. It's something that's just ours. Do you get it?"

"Yeah, I get it, and I'm sorry I asked. I guess I just wasn't thinking about how personal that question was," Xander said. "So changing table is done, dresser is done, what do we have left, just the crib?"

"And a special gift for Tara. It's all in one piece, but it's a little old," Willow said.

"You're amazing."

"Do you think they're finished?" Tara asked as she and Anya pulled in the driveway.

"Xander is very handy, unless Willow slowed him down, it will be finished," Anya said. "You seem excited."

"It's weird. It's been the nursery for awhile, but it was just bare walls and boxes and now it's gonna be finished. Just waiting for the baby," Tara said. "That must sound so stupid."

"It sounds normal," Anya said. She herself was feeling a bit abnormal, not having any warm motherly feelings yet.

"Shall we?" Tara said opening the kitchen door for Anya.

"We were just getting ready to call you," Willow said hopping off the stool at the island and meeting Tara at the door. "We put the lasagna in the oven, and made a salad. Are you proud?"

"Very," Tara said, "but more importantly did you finish the room?"

"Yes, it is officially a nursery," Xander said.

"Do we get to see it?" Anya asked.

"Sure, we have time before dinner," Willow said. She lead Tara up the stairs in front of Xander and Anya. She stopped in front of the door and turned to her love. "Now remember if you don't like where we put things we can always move them," Willow said. She stepped forward and opened the door. Tara walked into the room and tears formed in her eyes. The crib had all the bedding to match the mural on the wall, with matching curtains and matching lamp. There was a rocking chair in the corner, with cushions that matched the bedding. The dog that Willow had slept with every night since she'd met her, and from what she understood from Xander every night since she was four, was resting comfortably in the crib. The thing that stood out most to Tara was a little green baby outfit hanging in the closet. To her knowledge neither one of them had bought any clothes for the baby yet.

"When did you do all this?" Tara asked.

"Buffy helped get all the bedding and everything, and the outfit is what I came home from the hospital in. I thought it would be nice if we brought the baby home in it, and the rocking chair is a present for you."

"I love it," Tara said wrapping her arms around Willow.

"Xander I want our baby's room to look like this," Anya said.

"Yesterday you didn't even want the baby to have a room," Xander said.

"Yes, but my maternal instincts have kicked in now, and the baby must have a pretty room."

"Well, is everyone ready for dinner?" Tara asked finally pulling away from Willow and drying her eyes.

"I'm always ready to eat. This baby must take after Xander," Anya said.

Poor Willow the over-achiever, although I'm glad she can admit to Tara that she is not able to do something, shows the implicit trust she has in her.
