Chapter 2: Miracle Number One
After about an hour of sitting with her mother, Tara went downstairs to tell her dad and brother what had happened. The police were called, the ambulance came and her mothers body was taken away.
The next few days were a blur for Tara. So many people where coming and going, saying how sorry they were for what happened but all that Tara felt was anger. She was angry for the pure fact that her mother was taken from her but she couldn't stop thinking about what the angel said. It was her time...yeah I understand that but but did it have to be her time. How was she supposed to go on with her life now without her mother? She didn't know. All that she did know was that she had to get through the next few weeks and then she was going to go on vacation, one that was planned before her mom died, to go see her aunt that lives in Sunnydale, California. It was supposed to be Tara and her mom but her dad told her that she could still go.
The day finally came. Tara got all packed and her dad drove her to the airport.
“Thanks dad for letting me go visit Aunt Connie.”
“You're welcome. I know that you had planned it to be a mother/daughter trip but I hope that you have fun while you are there.”
“I will dad.” Tara said.
“Hey, bring me back something from sunny California.”
Tara gave her dad a hug and made her way to the terminal. For the 6 hour plane ride all that Tara could think about was her mom. She so wanted her to be sitting next to her and be talking to her but things were going to be alright.
“Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Allow me to be the first to welcome you to the sunny state of California. I need everyone to make sure that their seatbelts are buckled and that your trays are in their upright position cause we will be landing very shortly. Thanks for your attention and I hope that you have a wonderful stay in Los Angeles.” The pilot said over the PA.
Tara put on her seatbelt, put her notebook in her bag and waited for the plane to land. Once it had landed, Tara made her way through the terminal. Just as she got to the end of the terminal, she saw a woman holding a sign 'Tara Maclay'. Tara walked toward the woman.
“Hi, I'm Tara.”Tara said as she reached the woman.
“Hi Tara, my name is Mackenzie and I am a friend of you Aunt Connie's. She got called into work for a few hours so she ashed if I would come pick you up.”
“Oh that's cool.”
“She wanted me to ask you if you would rather go straight to her house and wait there for her or I could take you on a tour of the city and then bring you to her work. She should only be a few hours at work but it's up to you.”
“I would love to see Sunnydale if you wouldn't mind showing me.”
“I don't mind at all. Let's go get your luggage and then we can get going back to Sunnydale.”
The two women made their way to baggage claim to get Tara's stuff and then headed to Mackenzie's car.
“I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am about your mom. I know what you and your family are going through.”
“Thank you. It is very hard but it is getting easier every day. I miss her a lot but I know that it was her time to go and that she is never far from me.”
“I lost my mom about 3 years ago.”
“Wow. I am sorry.”
“It's ok. I understand what you mean about it being her time cause that is how I feel about my mom too. She was killed in a car accident but she also saved the life of a little boy before she died. She was able to pull a 5 year old boy out of another car before she had a massive heart attack. So I know that she was meant to be there and meant to save that boy.”
“That is so great how you are dealing with it.”
“Yeah it was all I could do to just get through the first few months but I will tell you this, it will get easier so just give it time.”
The two talked the entire hour drive from the airport to Sunnydale. When the got there, Mackenzie started at the City Hall and eventually got all the way through town and to my Aunt's work.
“Well here we are. This is where your Aunt works. Let me go see if she is done just take a seat out here.” Mackenzie said as she pointed to the chairs in the lobby outside her Aunt's office.
A few minutes later, her Aunt came out.
“Tara!!” Her Aunt said as she walked over to Tara and gave her a hug.
“Aunt Connie.”
“Honey, I am so glad that you are here. So what do you think of our fine city?” Connie laughed out.
“It seems cool. Small but good.”
“Yeah it has it's good points and bad points. It grows on you after awhile I guess.” Connie said as she turned around to grabbed her coat from the coat rack. “Stephanie, I am going to be gone for the rest of the day but if there is an emergency, you can call me on my cell. It better be an emergency though!” Connie said to her secretary.
“Ok Mrs. Maclay. Have a good day and I will see you tomorrow.”
Tara and her Aunt walked out of the building and headed to the parking lot.
“So are you hungry honey?”
“Yes I am starving.” Tara said as they got in the car.
“Good me too. So what would you like?”
“I would love a hamburger.”
“Perfect. There is this great burger joint just around the corner.” Connie said as she started the car and they headed to the restaurant.
The two made there way into the restaurant and were seated by the hostess. After a few minutes, the waitress came by and took their drink orders.
“Please excuse me, I am just going to go use the bathroom.” Tara said as she got up from her seat.
'Ok, the bathrooms are by where we came in and to the left.”
Tara walked to the bathrooms but as she opened the ladies room door she collided with a woman that was leaving.
“Oh, I am sorry.” the soft woman's voice said.
“It's ok.” Tara said as she looked up to see the most beautiful red-haired woman standing before her.
“Yes it is ok!” The redhead said as she looked Tara up and down.
Tara walked past the redhead and went into the bathroom. When she was finished she went back to the table. Once they were done with their dinner, they went back to Tara's Aunt's house. Her aunt showed her to the room where she would be staying. Tara got unpacked and then went back downstairs where her aunt was watching TV in the living room.
“I am tired Aunt Connie so I think that I am going to call it a night.”
“Ok. Maybe tomorrow I can take you for a tour of the university here.”
“That sounds good. I will see you in the morning. Good night aunt Connie and thanks again for letting me come visit you.”
“It is my pleasure honey.” Connie said as Tara headed upstairs and to bed.
The next morning, Tara awoke to the smell something cooking. She put on her robe and headed downstairs to see what was for breakfast. As she walked into the kitchen, she saw her Aunt Connie at the stove cooking.
“Good morning!” Tara said as she sat down at the table.
“Oh, good morning Tara. How did you sleep?”
“Good. The best that I have slept in weeks actually.”
“That's good. It will get easier each day.”
“Yeah I know.”
“So I hope that you like bacon and eggs.”
“Yeah that sounds perfect. I haven't had a real breakfast since my mom...” Tara said as she put her head down and looked at her hands on the table.
Her aunt came over to her and placed her hand on her shoulder. “Oh Tara I am sorry.”
“No, you have nothing to be sorry about. I have to be able to talk about her without getting this upset. I know that it will just take time before it won't hurt so much but it isn't anyone else's fault but mine.” Tara said as she got up from the table and walked over the the fridge. “Can I get you something to drink?”
“I am ok. I already had way too much coffee but you can get whatever you want.”
“Coffee...I have been dying for a coffee a real coffee for months now. Is there a coffeehouse around here?”
“Yeah there is actually one just down the street.” Connie said.
“Cool. Would you mind if I went there and got a coffee before breakfast?” Tara said as she turned to her aunt.
“No not at all. If you go down the street to the right. At the first stop sign make a left and it will be right there on your left hand side of the street.”
“Ok, thanks Aunt Connie. I will go be dressed and be back as soon as possible.”
Tara went upstairs to got dressed and then headed out the door to the coffeehouse. Tara walked straight up to the counter and got in line behind a woman.
“Tall Cafe Mocha with extra whipped cream and an extra squirt of chocolate. Please.” The red haired woman in front of her ordered.
Tara just stood there with a total shocked look on her face cause that is exactly what she orders. As the woman behind the counter made her drink, the redhead turned around. She just looked at me and smiled. Oh my god...how could anyone have such a beautiful smile, and those eyes, wow!
“Hi!” the redhead said.
“Hi! That is one great drink that you ordered.”
“Pardon me?”
“Sorry but I just noticed what you ordered and that is the exact same thing that I order.”
“Wow, I thought that I was the only person that would ever order a mocha like that.” The redhead said as she smiled again at Tara. “By the way my name is Willow.”
“T-Tara.”
“Did you just move here?” Willow asked as she turned back around to the woman behind the counter and motioned to her to make another drink like hers.
“I am just visiting my aunt.”
“Oh, that's too bad that you will be here for a little bit.”
“My aunt is trying to get me to move here and go to the university here but I don't know.”
“You should take her up on the office. This is a great place to live and the university is awesome. I would also love to get to know you better.” Willow said as she handed Tara her mocha.
