Tipping The Velvet Thread

Salem Witch Trials, koala bears, SpongeBob: what's on TV and at the movies!

Re: ...

Postby Puff » Tue Dec 17, 2002 6:54 pm

Just wanted to send a huge thanks to Di for sending me a tape of Tipping the Velvet. I loved the book and the series certainly lived up to it. And all of the hype that was surrounding it.

I just can't see why anyone would think that Nan should be with Kitty though at the end. Flo is just wonderful.

Working through Affinity at the moment and Fingersmith arrived the other day. Happy reading for me.

I think I'm doubly jealous...

All these Kitties watching TTV (although at this point I'm more in the "Rachael Stirling, Yum!" club than the"ooh Jodhi May!" club) and I'm so jealous about Kitties who get to read Fingersmith for the first time! It's one of those that would be great to come back to fresh. Although rereading it should be just as great.

And some BIG Affinity spoilers:

Ok, so Sarah Waters really suckered me in. I was racking my brain when the "spirits" were bringing things to Margaret. I could NOT figure it out! And of course Selina had to be a fraud, but just maybe what if she wasn't?! Suckered in!! I'd heard that the ending to the book wasn't so happy and with all the hints, I was wondering if "that" was in the air :( Just amazing and so sad. If she'd have told the story from Selina's point of view, it may have been somewhat happier, but I wonder if she could be made sympathetic? Hmmm.

lol, cicca. rachael totally blew me away with her beauty (she is stunning!) but it's one of those cold beauties that some women have. does that make any sense? Jodhi is warm to me... :heart

on the bbc drama website today the advent calendar window is a vote for the drama starring man/woman you'd most like to kiss under the mistletoe... rachael is on the women's one (as well as keeley but no jodhi :( ) currently rachael is in the lead :D

I suspect I'll "get" Jodhi May once I see her in TTV. Pictures on the web haven't really done much for me.

Rachael Stirling though... *coughing nervously* Maybe it was the gold... Maybe I just have a thing for gold. In that case, I should be lusting after Goldmember and I SO am not!

Yeah, I do understand about cold beauty... Or maybe I should say "cool". Cate Blanchett has a cool beauty. She's just stunning. And then of course our Amber is very much of the warm beauty variety... Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I also need to go read Fingersmith again and fanta... er... um, keep myself busy wondering who would be good to play Sue and Maud. I'd really love to see it made into a movie that knocks Oscar on his big gold ass.

Oh again with the gold! What is wrong with me?! :laugh

Happy birthday Hanki! May you kiss someone lovely under the mistletoe! Jodhi May painted gold perhaps?

oh, I'll apologize. Gold fever. That's the only explanation.

Jodhi is like Amber in her beauty..they would never be Playboy models, which is a compliment, but they have a natural beauty..You could put them on screen, sans makeup and wearing a sack, and they would still take your breath away....:thud

I saw the Stuff photo shoot and yes, yum...but Amber looked like a real woman.. A beautiful, healthy and voluptuous woman..You see that automatically disqualifies her. Cause in the Playboy model world you have to be a silicone injected barbie doll...36-24-36. Same thing with Johdi......Kendahl

I'm hoping I'll get to experience the Jodhi May affect sometime soon...

Now, no laughing or pity or throwing things, but my Amber-Haze was something that just sort of dawned on me over time. It wasn't a kaboom head over heels thing during Hush. Yeah, I immediately loved Tara, but that particular drooling sensation didn't happen right away. *feeling sorry for myself* So, maybe it'll be something similar with Jodhi May.

And it'll be interesting to see if Rachael Stirling really does knock my socks (or anything else!) off. Yum!

Then again, someone sent some amazing photos of Keeley Hawes, so it may be three for three. ;)

Amber in Stuff...

i have to also agree with the amber thing, i didn't really go "god that woman is gorgeous" until about fifth season... of course that was when i actually realised i was gay and had bene pining after her for the past year :wink

I wonder if Amber deserves any toasters? :grin She must!

And it does my lil heart good to know that lots of teenaged girls in the UK must've seen TTV and zing went their heartstrings! Hooray! Really...

I wish I'd have had something like that when I was in high school. It would've been nice to have clued in a whole lot sooner!

Gold Rachael Stirling under the christmas tree with a big ol' bow around her... Jodhi May painted gold under the mistletoe... Ammmmmmmmmber dusted with gold... :drool

Tipping in America?

Postby willowlove » Mon Jan 06, 2003 12:24 pm

I was reading an article in the Seattle Times about midseason TV and it claimed that Tipping the Velvet would air on BBC America sometime this year. I could find no confirmation of this at the BBC America website however, so take this with a grain (or twenty) of salt.

And to think that the BBC cut Willow and Tara snuggling in bed from Family once upon a time. I hope these results will help them to lighten up in the future and that more series like these will see the light of day. It does not look like the entire British population threatened to boycot the beebs nor did most viewers seem to be less entertained by the fact that no one died.

It's not fair of me to complain, since I haven't actually seen TTV yet... But shouldn't Nan and Flo at the end be the top romatic moment? Really? Shouldn't it?!

Nice to see that people enjoyed the show so much. :)

And Rachael Stirling as Most Fanciable Female? Fancy that! Yum.

I'll be crossing my fingers that the BBC behaves itself and leaves Entropy alone.

If they can show big huge dildos, they can certainly show a tame little smooch. Did I say tame? Little? Oops. How about long and hot.

Cicca I have to agree. Nan and Flo should have been the best couple, I think that is even clearer in the series than in the book.

I'm trying to be patient waiting for TTV to get over here... Wouldn't it be fun for one of the big networks to air it uncut? Just put in a few disclaimers for lovely naked bits so people don't have to see more skin than they'd like. ;)

Works for me. :grin

I'm looking forward to seeing how each of the relationships got translated. I've already heard all about it, but that's not the same as seeing.

I just got back from London and managed to see Jodhi in 'The Talking Cure' ... and she is absolutely amazing! So unlike anything I've seen her in. The theater is part of the National Theater, but it's a small, intimate space. I think it only fits about 300, maybe less. I got standing room tickets for an afternoon performance for only ten pounds. And it was so worth getting sore feet!

I will write a long, rambling post about the play, Jodhi and the also very impressive Ralph Finnes (who is also very easy on the eyes), but only if anyone is interested. :)

Also managed to get a hold of 'Tipping the Velvet' on DVD which I have been watching non-stop. Ahh... I love my region free dvd player!

Re: Tipping the Velvet TV marathon

Postby xita » Sun Feb 02, 2003 11:41 am

Well I saw this finally not too long ago.

The first part really didn't sit too well with me, too much like farce. The book is so beautiful , I felt this part almost mocked that. It was almost all I could do not to turn it off. I was embarassed I had touted this to my gf. The acting was way over the top and I was having flashbacks to claire of the moon. Yeah, the sex scenes were something else in that part and that was the only redeeming quality.

By the time the second part rolled along and Nan was walking around wailing over kitty, I just wanted to slap her. However, this part improved greately. It took on a more traditional approach which worked better. I couldn't believe they were showing dildos, :lol . Plus nan in drag, gosh is there anything better than that? It has been a while since I'd read Tipping the Velvet, so parts of it were coming to me and one can't help but compare. This part held up better.

The third part is my favorite mostly because Flo and Nan rocked. I liked the little dramatic ending, though of course I liked the book version better.

Interesting how age and experience change you. Back in the day when I read it, I was cheering for Kitty. Now perhaps the book was more ambigious about kitty and made you like her better. The movie clearly shows kitty as someone that is not good enough for the long run. Flo is the keeper and who would want to break her heart :heart Or maybe it's because I am older and I prefer the woman you are going to keep and not the one you play with. I value different things now, and the love and devotion of a woman, cannot be traded for the fun and excitement of an indecisive one.

If I had to live my life again, I'd make the same mistakes, only sooner.
