Xena: The Movie: ITV reports that the film will go ahead with not only "a stunning soundtrack provided by the series' original composer - Joseph Lo Duca" but a special Xena and Gabriel relationship theme song called "When I Look at You" by Mariah Carey.

No, Xita, haven't you heard? Now that everyone over there has decided that Xena is gay, they're really worried about slipping into a cinematic lesbian cliche. So they're introducing Gabrielle's straight twin brother, Gabriel. And Xena is going to fall in love with him.

Oh. Wait...

I'm a Xena fan and damn proud of it. We're a great fandom. So there.

On another note:

Zena, Gabriel, Rosenburg, Terra, MacClay, McClay, Aries, Zander, Katherine (Janeway)...

That's because you English people have so many letters and letter combinations that sound exactly the same or at least very familiar. :p

Xena: Warrior Princess to be released on DVD

Herc And Xena DVD's Due

9:00am ET, 20-February-03

Anchor Bay Entertainment has bought the home video rights to syndicated TV sensations Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Variety reported. The company also plans to release additional seasons of the TV series Highlander to follow up last year's boxed set, which included the complete first season and a special edition of the original 1986 film.

Hercules bowed in 1994 as a made-for-TV movie and went on to six seasons and 100 episodes. Xena, a spinoff that debuted as a series in 1995, aired 130 episodes, also through six seasons. The Highlander feature has spawned three sequels and 140 TV episodes. Dimension is planning a fifth feature film in 2004, and an animated series is also in the works, the trade paper said.

Does anybody watch Six Feet Under?

Tonight seemed to have some subtext between Ruth;the mom,and a new character played by Kathy Bates.

I could be imagining things tho. LOL

Anyone else notice?

Re: The Haunting

I jumped at the chance to purchase the DVD of Robert Wise's "The Haunting", the 1963 film based on Shirley Jackson's novel. It is vastly superior to the dreadful re-make with Liam Neeson, which is nothing but a spfx crapfest.

Anyway, there are aspects to it that I never really noticed before, most notably the apparent subtext between Eleanor (Julie Harris) and Theo (Claire Bloom). Maybe it's my imagination, but I can't help feeling that it is sometimes very obvious. In this particular case, though, it seems to be Theo who gives off the "gay vibe", and seems to be attracted to Nell.

"We're going to be such good friends." says Nell when she first meets Theo.

"Just like sisters" replies Theo, who, to my eye, seems to be giving Nell the "once over".

Later, Theo clearly has no objection to sleeping in the same room with Nell in adjoining beds, and seems positively delighted to be ordered by Dr. Markway to "keep an eye" on Nell. Furthermore, it is Theo who notices that Nell seems to be attracted to Dr. Markway, and she appears to be mightily disappointed and/or miffed about that! Theo herself is clearly annoyed by the attention paid to her (i.e. Theo) by Luke (Russ Tamblyn), and sharply tells him to "keep his hands off" when he touches her!

Finally, Nell becomes noticeably uncomfortable with Theo's attentions and, at one point, calls her a "freak of nature"!! (Remember, this is 1963.)

So, I put it to those Kittens who know and love this classic film as much as I do: is it just me, or do others see this as well??:)

Edited to add: Aha! It turns out that it is definitely not my imagination!:banana I listened to the excellent commentary that comes with the disc, and Claire Bloom specifically states that she played Theo as "a woman attracted to another woman". Furthermore, both Robert Wise and Nelson Gidding (the screenwriter) state in their commentaries that the relationship between Theo and Eleanor is "an implied lesbian relationship".:)

Little bit o' trivia: Lois Maxwell, who plays Dr. Markway's wife Grace, later became the legendary Miss Moneypenny in the Connery/James Bond films.;)

Are these the characters portrayed by Lilly Taylor and Catherine Zeta Jones in the remake? I only saw the remake several years ago and I did like it because of them and probably because I have not seen the original. I thought they had nice chemistry and the subtext was written in capital letters. No maintext though, we probably have to wait for the remake of 2063 for that to happen.

Re: Text vs. Subtext

Postby Hemiola » Thu Sep 09, 2004 3:29 pm

Hi DrG!:wave

I only saw the remake once ('cause it was so gawdawful:puke ) but yes, I do believe we are talking about the same characters.

Concerning text vs. subtext in this story, again it is fascinating to turn to the commentary of Wise and Giddings. It turns out that the original script included much more background information for each of the characters (in the final version, we only got backstory for Nell). In the "backstory" scene for Theo, we were supposed to see a woman looking out of a window, watching Theo load her suitcases into a car and driving away. We were then supposed to see this woman leave the window, enter the bathroom, and find the words "I HATE YOU" written in lipstick on the mirror. This would have left no doubt that Theo was leaving a relationship after an acrimonious break-up. This was cut for being "too racy" (again, one has to recall that this was 1963;) ).
