Ratings, shmatings...

Postby KISMIC » Fri Apr 19, 2002 9:05 am

JoannaHillier - What we KNOW and what we FEEL are two different things. Sure the ratings haven't ever really been great, but hey, is that really going to stop anyone from hating ABC? Pfft hell no! Lol, while I'm at it, bad people for not tuning in to it...But hey there's always a bright side to everything, at least you all got till the end of season three before it was cancelled, out here in Aus it's been cancelled around half way through season 1.

Anyway if it's been cancelled for good, lets just hope/pray that the stars of the show get some really great movie parts in the (extremely near) future!! :)

I understand that KISMIC, but for the people who say they won't watch ABC again, then they are hurting other ABC shows which would start to lose ratings, and future shows that ABC might think about putting on. I just don't think punishing ABC will accomplish anything except for other shows to get cancelled before their time is up. Once and Again has had three seasons which is a long time for a struggling show and yes I know ABC moved the show alot.

Re: well

Postby Kieli » Fri Apr 19, 2002 12:54 pm

I have to agree with Rane. Nothing about ABC has ever even remotely drawn me to watch their shows except maybe Dharma and Greg. Other than Once and Again, those two shows are the only ones that I ever even bothered with. So, in retrospect, ABC was really shooting themselves in the foot. Sure the ratings were going to bad when you're pitting Once and Again against other Monday night faves such as Crossing Jordan, Third Watch, Ally McBeal, Boston Public and The American Embassy (well that one is my personal favourite and not necessarily others but you see my point). It's tough for a show like that to be competing with all the other dramas that are thrown at us on Monday nights.

The studios own poor judgment killed the show, IMHO. It was a good show that deserved better chances than it was given. It seems like they practically doomed it from the start, sticking the show in slots that were known to be tough for competition. Yes, it's a great show and yes it should have been handled better. I'm not going to berate someone for hating ABC. *shrug* Whatever makes them feel better. Fact is, Once and Again was given the short end of the stick (sounds very much like our own beloved character this season) and while not fair, it happens and people feel strongly about it. Which can either spur them into action or just allow bad feelings to come out. In any case, people have a right to feel as they choose. Which was my point somewhere in all this rambling.

I agree with you Kieli that I believe ABC killed their own show. They didn't have good advirtising and how are they supposed to expect people to tune in every week when the time slot kept shifting! I mean I'm an avid watcher of the show, or I was, and it was still hard for me to figure out when the show was doing. And like you said of course its extremely stupid to pit a struggling show like O&A against other Monday night favorites. Plus the added stupidity of putting O&A right after a stupid show like the Bachelor? Did they really think the audiences for those two shows were doing to be the same? That's one reason that I can't stand ABC right now, because they're the one's that killed the show.

adresses?

Postby An » Sat Apr 20, 2002 8:41 am

Hey,

there was a website a while ago from where one could easily send real letters to companies in the US. Does someone know the url of that site? I would really like to let those people at ABC know about my wishes to continue the show. So if someone has their adress instead... After a few months of not being able to go on the Kitty I'm very saddened to learn about the cancellation. :(

On a very very naive side of things, can't we all write UPN? ;) At least they show an appreciation of good quality shows and taking fans seriously.

A chance?

Postby shellybean » Sat Apr 20, 2002 2:28 pm

There still may be a chance! Ok, I know that I keep going back and forth saying that its over and then there's a chance and then its over again. But I just heard on the JessieKatie group that there is an slim chance that Once and Again can be brought back! Ok, its true that the sets are coming down but they aren't being destroyed, they're being put into storage. If we keep doing what we're doing there's still a chance until May 14th when the fall lineup is announced! That's still a lot of time to convince ABC that Once and Again is a show worth bringing back!

I think some episode or other has the prhase "in denial much?" mentioned, heh. This is a proffessional network with people who take their jobs very seriously, I cant fathom how a cpl moe msgs can do something that hasnt been accomplished with all the revival work allready done. It's not like they have a magic limit of say 100k post cards and they only need 3 more and all will be ok again.

once and again shocker

Postby kimbers » Mon Apr 22, 2002 12:01 am

I found this on tvguide.com this weekend, I thought maybe some of you would like to see it. It gives a little hope. Maybe :) but who knows I've heard tons of rumors since the day it was canceled, even that the set has already been taken down.

In The News: Once and Again Shocker!

Friday, April 19, 2002

ONCE... AGAIN?: Once and Again actor Billy Campbell is confirming rumors that his acclaimed ABC series may return in the fall for a fourth season — despite the fact that last Monday's episode was billed by the network as the show's series finale. Campbell's leading lady, Sela Ward, broke the news to him last week. "She called and said, 'Have you heard? It's not definite that we're canceled,'" he tells TV Guide Online. "Apparently, on the same day that they cancel us, [ABC] called the studio and said, 'Don't knock down the sets, don't release the actors, and why don't you work us up a tentative budget for a Year Four.' I don't know what to think.... They can't even kill us with dignity."

still a chance

Postby ennui24 » Mon Apr 22, 2002 1:25 am

Given how bad ABC's overall lineup is at present and how weak its pilots are shaping up to be, I can believe that there is still a possibility that they will reverse their decision. It's not as if no one was watching O&A - in terms of numbers, as many people watch O&A as watch Buffy. It's just that major networks have different expectations and costs. So a top quality show with a small but rabidly loyal core audience that has a chance at syndication is better than a bunch of loser pilots that can never be rerun and will never gain any audience.

While of course Disney/ABC will make the final decision for practical reasons, if fans can keep up the public pressure, this can only be of the good.

The 'Save O and A" campaign is planning to buy a billboard right across the street from Disney/ABC, and has started a mail in "Save Baby Sammler" campaign - all of these are good strategies, I think, that can only help the cause.

I got all excited about this too but then I realized that they did make the call to tear down the sets(even if only to put it in storage) so this article may be late. I mean God! can't they just make a decision already! This thinking its over and than thinking its not and going back and forth is not emotionally good for me! I just want a final word one way or the other. Ok, not one way or the other but the final word that it WILL come back!

Funny, Joanne, if you're actually an O&A fan, what is your point exactly other than being just snarky? Let people believe what they want...what is the harm in that other than looking down your nose at them and saying "So there!"? :|

This is what I should have said: I'm very sorry, my life isn't very good right now and it was easy for me to come here and just take it out on people, for a little bit of time, it helped me release my angry and well I just been upset lately about my life which is my own fault.

You should join the JessieKatie group because it has a few clips in the files section. I don't really know how many and which one's because I have them on tape so don't really need to download them.

I also think that its pretty much decided that Once and Again isn't coming back but fans like me are just clinging to any type of hope that's left. We're just hoping that ABC would see what idiots they are and bring the show back. I guess big networks like that don't listen to fans huh? No, I'm not upset. Can you tell that I'm a little obsessed?

Possible Hope?!?

Postby JodiMnstr » Tue Apr 23, 2002 2:39 pm

I know that there's lots of rumor flying around. I don't know if this will help or not, but as I was driving in to work this morning, the radio announcer commented that there was a possibility that Once and Again would be coming back next season and that it was silly that it had been cancelled in the first place. She said that they should find a night, leave it there and let people know when it was on so it could gain an audience.

Now, I'm in the Triangle area of North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), and as I said, she didn't mention where she'd heard it, but I thought it very interesting that it was something being commented on by a radio announcer way on the other side of the country.

Make what you will of it.

media ripple effect and more signs of hope

Postby ennui24 » Tue Apr 23, 2002 8:53 pm

It seems like various mainstream media outlets - radio, television, and print - are picking up this story and are echoing each other. I think the publicity is a good thing, and if it helps pressure ABC into changing its mind, all the better.

Picked this up from the TWoP boards - another sign that there may still be hope:

Quote:
POSTING WESTSCOT'S comments today (Tues.):

Word coming from someone working at ABC:

NOTHING is safe. EVERY show in their line-up is not assured that it will stay. Even The Practice & NYPD are struggling in the ratings. Just because Drew Carey & Whose Line Is It Anyways have already signed 1-2 year contracts DOES NOT mean that ABC will keep those shows on the air.

ABC is in CRISIS!! Nothing they have is working. What happens after The Bachelor ends its run? What does ABC fill up that hole with?

We are still being told by someone who works at ABC that it's not too late. We MUST keep up the pressure. Our calls and letters are still being counted. The Variety ad had everyone talking at ABC yesterday and they ARE NOT happy!!

They are urging us to keep fighting. Another PUBLIC outcry from the fans will keep Eisner & Company squirming.

WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW!!!

Anyone interested in contributing to the purchase of the billboard can go to www.saveoanda.com. If nothing else, it will be a great way to publicly embarass the ABC execs. :)

Vote for O&A at E! online

Postby turtlesrcool » Thu Apr 25, 2002 12:42 pm

Ok, so I know there's been a lot of conflicting statements lately, on the future of O&A. But in the event that it isn't dead yet, let's give it one last push! Wanda, over at E! online is running a "Save your Fave" campaign for shows that are on the brink. All you need to do is to send her an e-mail at wanda@eonline.com with "Once and Again" in the subject line to vote for it. (Also, feel free to express your feelings why O&A should be saved) Whichever show receives the most votes will get some help from her. She wrote,

Below are the series that haven't received pickups--but haven't yet been canceled. (If you haven't heard, Ally recently got the boot.) Simply look over the list, and email me with the one you would miss the most--with the series' name as the subject.

I'll reveal the winner in next week's column--including your comments on why the show should be saved--and ship off color copies to the execs who are deciding the show's fate

If you want to read the article in full, go to http://www.eonline.com, click on the "gossip" section and then the "watch with wanda" column. You'll see this part after the stuff on David Boreanaz. I'm a bit late on posting this, as I only just recently found it myself, so there probably isn't much time left to vote.I know this is Wanda we're talking about, she's not exactly my favorite either, but what the hell, if she can help out, it's worth a shot right? As such, if you're serious about making a last ditch effort to save the show, PLEASE e-mail wanda and vote for the show.

Thanks

Billboard Campaign

Postby shellybean » Fri Apr 26, 2002 3:30 am

That Wanda thing is great but I think the thing that may make the most impact is the whole billboard campaign. I don't know if it was mentioned here before but the Save Once and Again people are trying to rent one of the large billboards directly facing the ABC offices to put messages about saving Once and Again. the thing is that it costs $6000 so they're taking pledges. even pledging $5 can help. and it'll really make an impact because the billboard will the staring the ABC execs in the face. go here for more info:

Postby Cipher » Mon Apr 29, 2002 6:54 pm

Thanks, GrrArrgh, I just noticed it was on last Saturday and had to rush in a tape (fortunately not one I'd need to keep, as I missed the first few minutes and didn't put it on my O&A tape anyway). 4/27 was the baby shower, was that season 2 or early season 3? Anyone know the title, or what's on 5/4? There was some mention of the school play (I think), but I couldn't tell if it had happened or was coming up (seemed to be coming up). Is 5/11 the start of season 3?

Do you know which episodes are the Jessie/Katie ones to particularly look for and when they'll be? (I want to be sure to save them.) I hope this means the Saturday run on Lifetime will cover J/K for those of us that missed the first run and that we haven't missed anything yet.

Unfortunately there's some crackle in the audio on Lifetime and I'm not sure if it's from them or satellite/cable. Anyone else (Pacific and/or Mountain in particular) notice that?

Save That Fave w/ Wanda results

Postby kumarihpx » Tue Apr 30, 2002 8:51 am

O&A got the number 1 show that viewers couldn't live without with almost double the amount of votes as the number 2 show.

www.eonline.com/Gossip/Wa...0426b.html

From her column:

So, even though it's still pretty unclear whether Once and Again is salvageable (check out our news section for the latest), I'm going to follow the lead of you ever-hopeful fans and send the alphabet peeps a last-ditch plea to save the show. Here goes:

Dear ABC,

The fans aren't giving up on Once and Again--and neither should you.

This week, in E! Online's Save Your Fave poll, more than 12,000 users voted for the one TV show they can't live without. Once and Again blew everyone else out of the water, claiming nearly twice the votes of any other show.

We beg you to reconsider placing Once and Again on the fall schedule, before it's too late, while you still have the sets intact and the actors under contract. With a little promotional TLC and a permanent time slot, the most talented cast on the tube might finally get the ratings they deserve.

O&A needs another season. Just listen to the fans:

"Once and Again is a damn fine show. The fans know this and so do the critics. It's so rare that a show of this caliber and a cast with so much chemistry and talent comes along."

--Candace, Hawaii

"Once and Again is one of the only shows on television with the guts to show life the way it is. Messy, disappointing, surprising and sometimes even predictable. True reality TV."

--Morgan

"There isn't one actor in this show, from the youngest to the oldest, who doesn't embody the essence of his or her character, so much so that we fans have been completely taken in by them--hearts and minds. We really care about them, as if they're real people. Once & Again is more than 'just TV,' it's like our extended family."

--Keith A., Houston

Perhaps Grace Manning said it best in the finale: "You don't understand. It's just such a beautiful story."

Give Once and Again another chance. It's not every day you get to be a hero.

--Wanda, E! Online TV columnist
