Mulholland Drive Confusion ?????

Postby LovePuddle » Tue Apr 16, 2002 8:29 pm

I'm new and dont know if this is where I can discuss this, but.... I loved the movie but was so utterly confused at the end that I didn't know what to do with myself. I went to bed every night thinking about it and got up every morning doing the same thing. I just cant figure it out and thought I would ask the kittens for a little insight.

Mulholland Drive Confusion ?????

Postby Sweetjane » Tue Apr 16, 2002 8:30 pm

Let me see if i can help you ,

well i went to see the film as well and i found myself thinking about it for days , but i have come to a general conclusion that up to the point where they open the blue box , the whole thing is a DREAM in the head of Naomi Watt's character (the blonde one) . Because 'Rita' in real life had an affair with her and then left her to marry The Director and i assume also having a fling with the 'Girl' she kissed at the Dinner Party at the end , thats why The Director guy finds his wife in the dream cheating on him with Billy Ray Cyrus and making a fool out of him and the 'Girl' is the 'chosen one' . in a way the dream is retribution for those the character hated in real life and what she wanted to happen as well as bizarre occurances from random things she has seen.

Also - the part where she recites the script in the dream audition very differently to how she rehearsed it with 'Rita' represents how different interpretations of the same words can be presented , this relates i assume to the interpretation of the importance of their actual relationship in real life , which is so different for each character.

I saw it a while ago and so have forgotton much of the imagery and details , however , you may have noticed that everything in the DREAM appeared in the reality part after the blue box was opened and she woke up in a sense. for instance , the cowboy that appeared in the dream walked by them at the dinner party briefly . This means that the dead body they found in the dream , was foreshadowing and a symbolic gesture that the relationship lead to Naomi Watt's hiring the killer to kill her loved one after she ended the affair and following that, shooting herself as she could not handle the pain of killing someone she loved ----

*this is where the blue box comes in as the killer said that the 'job would be done' when she found a blue key on her table - hence the prevelance and the dramatic change instigated by opening the blue box with the blue key in the dream.furthermore i think Club Silencio was the pain of the breakup represented .

i can think of lots more but i'm afraid i haven't made much sense anyway , oh well , i hoped i helped a bit :)

WOW!........You are....sweet.....Jane.

can't believe I just said that but anyhoo......I really appreciate your explanation and It really helps. I was thinging it was a dream sequence but then I thought I was thinking about it too hard because I quess I wanted It to end with them getting together. But I guess if every movie ended on a happy note then life would be very boring.

Anyway....YOU ROCK!!

David Lynch is a geniius. :-D

Though, has everybody heard, on the DVD and Video rental release he will 'blank out' the ,ahem, private regions of his cats for "modesty's sake".

Thats all very well except that anyone who saw it in the cinema can see everything anyway! WTF?!?

SweetJane! you wanna get married! ;) I love David Lynch to no end and i try to always be prepared for the fact that he likes to walk you up to a cliff and then drop you. Somebody else said it best, but you have to watch this film a couple of times.

Even though it threw me for a crazy loop, i like this one almost as much as i dig Blue Velvet (and that one's just freaky).

Again Sweetjane, peace and blessings to you for that wrap up.

Howdy. I too loved Mulholland Drive, along with all things Lynch. This movie was a real brain tickler. And follows that very Lynchian credo that all things don't have to make complete sense.

Though, if you have any more questions about the film, I found this Salon article most useful in easing the confusion.

But Camilla in the first reality was not just a random girl. She kissed Camilla in the second reality.

i really see your theory Xita, to me the blue box could have been death also ,and i see now that the monster thing behind the cafe was death . - it may be a a good girl ending but i also feel that Camilla did want Diane , but like the audition presented , it's all a performance , with Camilla choosing a 'hollywood' over Diane .

Principally , the dream parts could be interpreted as an amalglamation of both woman's psych and journey to death - the fear of it - in the monster behind the cafe AND i noticed how the blue key or box i can't remeber lay in the handbag with all the *money* - probably making the prosaic point in my mind of placing money and success on Camilla's part over Diane.

............or something like that

De-lurking to say:

My interpretation is that the first part of the movie is Dianne's life, *as she wanted to have lived it*, glamorous Hollywood-fashion, flashing before her eyes as she dies at the end of the second part.

Whats with the crap DVD transfer?

Postby superZONic » Wed Apr 17, 2002 5:56 pm

Having purchased and watched the dvd, i am baffled as to the complete absence of extras but more importantly, WHY WHY WHY are there no chapter breakdowns even? All you can do is watch it from beginning to end (or sit there and fast forward for 45 minutes). And then there's that weird punani blurring during the love scene (GOOFY)! I scanned through the postings and couldnt find it mentioned, but does anyone know if a better dvd version will be released in this lifetime?? Great great movie, but crap effort with the disc. Im sure Lynch made it this way with some freakazoid artististic rationalisation too. Grrrr (arrgg).

Yeah Lynch won't allow it. He's kind of weird about DVDs.

Totally agree.

And that blurring during the love scene. I'm not sure which blurring you mean, but Laura Harring's nudity was blurred out, I do know that much. (Particularly odd looking when you turn the brightness way up on your tv. Not that I'd know)

Getting back to the transfer though, I do hate it when a good and complex movie gets a crap and simplistic DVD effort. :(

My Bladerunner dvd is also totally crapola and featureless.

these bleedin' dvds are doin' me 'ead in ! oh excuse me , me englishness is showing.

i don't know why but there seems to be quite a few great films with a really bad dvd effort when it could have been so much better . and for goodness sake - whats with the pubic hair thing? i mean Lynch doesn't mind showing us corpses and death personified but brings issue over the marvellous marvellous Laura Harring's special forest of love.....??

oh well . right i'm off to get more disturbed by watching Blue Velvet again .hopefully that way i may go mad and not have to do my pile of exams in about 2 months .

what a capital plan!

What the...? Has anyone seen Lost Highway ? Patricia Arquette can't keep her freakin' clothes on or her sexy self out of a sex scene for more than 5 minutes? And now Lynchy is concerned about his actors privacy? Jeepers that guy is a strange one...

i think i read an interview where david lynch sadi he didn't put in chapter stops because he wants the viewers to watch the film continuously from start to finish because he meant for them to watch it that way.

DVD

Postby JoanneHillier » Sun Apr 21, 2002 7:33 am

Well as Xita said, Lynch don't usually have scene selection, just the way he is. I really doubt there be another version of this DVD, I think this is it which is fine by me.

Here is a quote I got from another website, so don't yell at me about the caps:

In regards to this issue here is a statement from Lynch himself:

"WE DID THAT BLURRING FOR THE DVD ON PURPOSE AS WE KNEW THAT PICTURES OF LAURA WOULD BE EVERYWHERE IF WE DIDN'T. FIRST - IF THE SHOT IS TIMED CORRECTLY YOU SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TELL ONE BIT IF LAURA'S PUBIC HAIR HAS BEEN BLURRED - THIS PROBABLY MEANS SOME VIEWERS ARE EXPERIMENTING TO SEE LAURA'S PUBIC HAIR AND MORE ..... THIS IS WHY THE PICTURE WAS BLURRED - I PROMISED LAURA THAT I WOULD TRY TO PROTECT HER AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND TOLD HER SHE WOULD REMAIN A BEAUTIFUL SILLOUETTE AGAINST THE WARM LIGHT COMING IN THROUGH THE CURTAINS."

Anyways that is what I found on another site, I'm not sure if it's accurate or what Lynch really said but it would explain the reason why.

re: My Theories

Postby Thespia » Sun Apr 21, 2002 7:23 pm

If Diane reconstructed the world so she could be Betty why was Betty the one who was out to solve the mystery. I would think Diane as Betty would not want to find out who Rita really is.

Because this is what makes a tragic hero: s(he) imagines to be walking to salvation when, in fact, is going towards the fall.

I agree with you that the blue box meant death, though (Camilla's death, more specifically). The hitman says he would leave the blue key at the place they agreed to after he had killed Camilla. The key opened the 'box', metaphorically leading Diane/Betty to the knowledge that she had Camilla killed.

I loved this movie! Have to watch it again!

I'm glad he doesn't have chapter stops. I actually agree with Lynch's idea there - movies aren't like music CDs. You should watch the whole thing, otherwise it only spoils it.

Just the blurring-out-nudity issue seems odd, considering it sounds like it was done by Lynch. If it was requested by Laura Harring, that would be totally understandable. But for Lynch to do it was strange, considering the nudity in his other movies. But maybe it was just a style/artistic choice.

im guessing it would have been at Laura's request [i could easily picture ppl putting up the shots everywhere online.] I respect her choice in that [if it was hers] 'cause ppl can be perverse in that way [we've all been hit with those popups at some point in our net lives "HOT SEXT NUDE PICS OF..blah blah"]

OT:

BTW, has anybody here seen Resident Evil? I saw it tonight and it's actually decent *shock.* More to the point, is it just me or is that movie incredibly slashy? [between Milla's character and Michelle's]

It had some interesting kissing scenes though... great use of tongue.

Thespia, in reference to your question about why it was that Betty was the one intent on solving the mystery, I interpreted that as her desire in her dream to be Rita's salvation/hero. I don't think she was after solving the mystery so much as being the one ABLE to solve the mystery.

BTW, another great movie I just saw was Donnie Darko. Very interesting stuff about time travel and such. And, an INCREDIBLE soundtrack.

Donnie Darko

Postby Epicurus » Thu Apr 25, 2002 1:47 pm

I rented Donnie Darko a week ago. It reminded me of BTVS actually. The talk between the teacher/Donnie about worm holes and time travel and the talk between Andrew/Jonathan in Flooded(?) when they are in the basement discussion the tatics of taking over Sunndydale. Darko was another strange movie. It got me thinkin'.
