American Wedding

Postby BytrSuite » Thu Jan 30, 2003 11:29 am

Review of the American Wedding script is up here.

Quote:
AMERICAN WEDDING

I’m sure this script has gone through various drafts in the last few months. I read one from October by Adam Herz, and my first reaction to it was, “That was sweet.” And I don’t mean that in the slang version of “sweet,” either. I mean there’s a real heart to this, and if this turns out to be the last of the AMERICAN PIE films, then there’s a good chance they’ll close things out on a high note.

This time out, the film opens with a twist on the way the first two films started. Typically, Jim (Jason Biggs) finds himself cornered in an embarrassing sexual situation by his well-intentioned Dad (Eugene Levy), but this time out, it’s the other way around. Jim is trying to propose marriage to Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) and ends up stumbling across a one-way ticket to lifetime therapy, his parents in the middle of incredibly vigorous sex. It’s a funny scene, and it’s a chance for Biggs and Levy to reverse roles in a way that should allow both of them to shine.

The storyline is incredibly simple, and at the risk of being crude, I’d sum it up like this: the pie fucker marries the flute fucker, and Stifler throws the bachelor party. Several characters have either been written out or marginalized (Chris Klein and Mena Suvari are off in Europe for most of the film, Tara Reid and Natasha Lyonne are simply gone, and Thomas Ian Nichols is underwritten to the point that he might as well not be in the film), but that’s a good thing. It allows the script to focus on the dynamics that work best. Finch and Stifler step up their antagonism this time as they find themselves competing for the affections of Cadence, Michelle’s sister. I don’t know who they’ve cast as Cadence, but she needs to be a mega-honey if she’s going to be convincing as Michelle’s sister. Hannigan has that rare mix of Disney heroine-cuteness and grown-up sex appeal that has only gotten more pronounced over the last few years, and making her one of the film’s main characters is the single smartest thing about the film. It’s also great that there’s no wager or agreement or pact to fuel the film. The one time Kevin brings it up, the others shout him down and tell him to shut up. Instead, the threat here is that Jim simply isn’t mature enough and capable enough to give Michelle the wedding she wants, the one he feels like she deserves.

That’s a very real fear, too. I came very close to getting married once (and there are days I thank God himself for reaching down and putting a cataclysmic stop to things), and just the gearing up to it was exhausting. Left to my own devices, I’d plan a full tank of gas, nice weather in Vegas, and a phone call afterwards to the folks to let them know. That doesn’t fly with most girls, though, and it’s because of the incredible importance placed on a wedding their whole lives. As Michelle puts it, “It’s this one day... one day where every eye is on me for a change, and I’m all pure and beautiful. Don’t get me wrong. I kinda like being the quirky nympho chick. But... well... I’ve never walked into a room and had everyone go ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ and ‘isn’t she elegant!?’” Jim promises to give her just exactly that, and then spends the rest of the film trying to overcome his omnipresent bad luck and make it happen.

Have no fear, though... the film’s raunch factor is enormous, even with all this sweetness going on. Stifler’s version of a bachelor party is pretty unbelievable, and wait until you see why Finch can now call Stifler a “grandmotherfucker” with impunity. Pubes on a wedding cake, the search for Leslie Summers, Stifler’s dancing skills, and Michelle’s mother’s love for chocolate truffles are just a few of the more outrageous elements along the way, and I hear they’ve done a lot of punch-up work since this draft.

Long story short, this is the model of how to learn from what worked in the first film and didn’t work in the second film, and Jesse Dylan (HOW HIGH) just needs to create the right atmosphere for these actors to really let loose. Just as marriage is a major step into a new life for young people, this film could serve as a great conclusion for these characters and set this cast free to pursue other interests in the years to come.

Oo, it sounds fabulous. Which I'd never really thought I'd ever say about an American Pie movie! And the author really does hit the nail with his description of Alyson

Hannigan has that rare mix of Disney heroine-cuteness and grown-up sex appeal

and about learning from what worked in the first two movies and keeping those characters that actual have... well character. So it sounds like they are filming this right now, while Buffy is still filming. Poor Alyson, no sleep for a while I suppose! Also, is there any real doubt she'd do any Buffy related things after this season (spin off) I mean they've all but molded a money making movie around her character that was originally on screen what, 15/20 minutes at most!

Go Alyson!

Oh god, I can't wait to see this. :) And I'm with Dri, here. I'm so proud of Aly, stealing the show as a minor character last time around and getting big billing this time around. Woo!

We always knew she had that mix of Disney heroine cuteness and grown up sexiness. ;) Such a great way to describe the goodness that is Aly.

Spank me, I'm Julia.

Aly is amazing, and I think for the first time I'll catch one of the AP movies at the theater and not wait for video. Have to support Aly!

Wooooooooohoooooo I love it that Alyson is doing AP3 :D I loved the first two movies, they're hilarious (especially after a few beers ;) )

There was this Aly pic of her+mobile phone somewhere in the Alyson pics thread but can't remember the link...

The pic was from filming AP3 if I'm correct

I am looking forward to this very much. Alyson's star billing is well-deserved - she's the best actress of the whole crowd from the first two movies.

It's her timing and delivery which makes me anticipate lines like:
Quote:
Don’t get me wrong. I kinda like being the quirky nympho chick.

She and Jason Biggs have great chemistry (taking notes, Joss?), and Eugene Levy is just priceless.

Postby Willowlicious » Fri Jan 31, 2003 9:21 am

I'm really looking forward to this film. The thing about the AP movies is that, even though they are immature, gross-out, teen sex movies, they haven't been afraid to embrace genuine sweetness. Having Jim's challenge making the wedding perfect for Michelle instead of having him wonder if he wants to marry her is a good move. Seeing a character Alyson plays have a happy ending will be a lovely change.

I know it won't be high art, but I hope it's well-written for what it is supposed to be and does well at the box office. Even critics who hated the other AP movies thought Aly did great work, so I know that Aly will do her part to make it successful. Her talent has been sooooooo wasted on BtVS the last year and a half (at least). She deserves bigger and better opportunities. I hope this is a nice showcase for her abilities and leads to more good things for her.

Although much of it is still unofficial, there seems to be a very interesting coincidence...

Michelle's sister will be played by January Jones, who is in "Taboo" with Amber.

"I am looking forward to this very much."

If only I could. But I guess I've seen too much of the Show That Shall Not Be Named. I can't help, but whenever I see one of its current cast members elsewhere, my brain automatically associates bad writing, lame storylines, laughable characterizations, cheap production values and uninspired acting. And that spoils all the fun I could have watching Aly, SMG, EC, ASH or JM. So I switch off tv, I don't go to the movies and I don't buy any DVDs. And this pisses me off, because I'd love to watch them on the small or big screen. If only I could.

At the same time I think especially Aly deserves only the best. She doesn't deserve to lose a single viewer for her future projects because of her current contract from which she cannot get away. Therefore I'd like to ask everyone who has or might get the same bad-quality-connotation problem, to do a single and actually very simple thing: Stop watching the Show That Shall Not Be Named.

I won't go into any details, knowing that this would be off-topic on this board. But let me tell you this: Stop watching the Show That Shall Not Be Named has become a good idea in itself. But there have been two outstanding, almost perfect moments to do so in the past: The best was immediately after "The Gift", the second best was about fourty minutes into "Seeing Red". And right now it's the third best moment to stop watching. For everyone. But especially for all of us who want to enjoy Aly in all her future roles (and here's hope that there will be many great roles for her to play in the years to come). It would be such a waste if any old bad feelings were tainting the enjoyment of watching this gorgeous actress.

And therefore:

Stop watching Buffy. Now.

From Dark Horizons:

www.darkhorizons.com/news.htm

American Wedding: 'Jon Movie Man' worked on the third "American Pie" flick over the weekend and has this SPOILER-filled detailed report:

"It was a three day shoot at a lovely greenhouse location, it was the wedding of Jim and Michelle. The wedding goes off without a hitch, they exchange vows, and kiss. Then we filmed the reception party and there was a lot of dancing. Jim and Michelle go out onto the dance floor for their first dance, it's a lovely dance scene. Then Jim motions for everyone to come out on the dance floor and join them. We all do, and there are many cuts to each of the charaters discussing the newlyweds.

Paul Finch also gets up and leaves the wedding at this time because he has to go and break up another wedding in order to get the woman he loves (MILF ALERT!). Also, Stifler's mom was on the set in her wedding dress and we almost went blind staring at her, she is literally busting out of her dress at the chest area. WOW!".

Just a head's up -- I will be on set next Wednesday as they shoot at a local college (I'm sorry to say that I've been sworn to secrecy as to which one and the times).

I will post as detailed of a description as possible. I was told Aly and Jason will be here ... I've yet to get confirmation on that.

Anyway, I'll come back a week from today and fill you all in one what I see (and if I was able to bring a camera, lol).

I love all the AP films and have AP1&2 on dvd, will definitely be buying number 3 as well. Hoping that they will have Aly's commentry on this one though as I was disappointed that she wasn't a part of it last time. Love the out-takes on AP2 and I'm guessing there will be just as many great moments on this one. Aly just looks so much fun to work with.

Think the wedding is a fanastic idea and it's obvious that this was going to be all about them as Jim stole the film in AP1, and Aly did in AP2. Maybe this will be the best one of all.

Cannot wait, just hope we have a august release in the UK too as that happens sometimes with the big films, if not then as soon as possible afterwards.
