Alyson Hannigan in Beyond the City Limits / Rip it Off

Anything about Willow & Tara, Alyson Hannigan and Amber Benson.

I saw it the other night, and as always, Aly was wonderful, but this movie was not.

A bad movie, a real bad movie, but hey, it's Aly, so I had to see it, but I won't be watching it again, that's for sure.

Beyond the City Limits

Postby elessar007 » Mon Apr 07, 2003 11:08 pm

I just watched a tape of this movie the other night and I want to thank all the Kittens of this thread for warning me. This was a bad film. The only bright spot was when Alyson's character said "You know who I love." It was a bright spot because it made me think of Willow and Tara's fantastic relationship. Thanks again for the heads up. It kept my expectations low thereby minimalising any disappointment.

Willow:In my world there are people in chains, and we can ride them like ponies.

Tara:You should ride with me some time. I guarantee safety and fun.

Just wanted to let everyone know that TMC is going to be showing "Beyond the City Limits" (or "Rip It Off" - whichever title you prefer) on Friday, April 12th at 2:30 am and then again on April 16th at 9:00 pm.

yay! I have TMC

Postby Amymlc » Wed Apr 09, 2003 10:30 am

I totally didn't know I had it, but I had to watch something for class and was flipping through the channels to get to my school channel and low and behold: There's TMC!! Yay! I'm going to tape it on Friday and watch it this weekend. Is anything missing from the televised version?

ok, so i taped it last night while i was at seder (well, my brother taped it for me ;) ) and watched it once i came home. it wasn't that terrible. but then again i only fast fowarded to the nastassja kinski parts and was quite drunk to begin with. so maybe that was it... dont know whether i'll see the whole movie though. lol...

all i know is i had a couple of deja vu moments when Lexi's all high and crying about her *love*. hhhmmmm..... wonder if joss read that script before breaking the story arc for season 6

"Take care of my heart, won't you please? Take care of it because it's all that I have. And if you let me, I'll take care of your heart too." Pure sweetness in the look between Willow and Tara.

DVD out in US

Postby NickDDP » Thu Apr 24, 2003 5:44 pm

I heard that the Rip It Off dvd is out in the US now. Since most of us have already seen it I just need to add that I've been told there are no extras on it worth anything. Bah.

I rented this from block busters this weekend

as most have noted the movie was not very good - but Aly did a great job with what she was given

I couldn't help but wonder did ME didn't rip off this movie or did this movie rip off ME? or both

spoilery stuff about aly's part

follows

you

been

warned

so anyway - the fact is aly was great but I've seen aly play these scenes before as willow

she plays a charater who is with a guy

but she falls for a girl

there is a bad break up with the guy

see aly walking down a street dazed hurt confused (much like she did after her break up with oz)

she's got a drug problem she is trying to kick (check)

falls off the wagon and ends up with another guy who gives her a fix and we see her do the psychadelic bit (think rack and his taste/high willow )

gets back with gf and gets through withdrawal with help of friends

things look good for the gfs

gf tells aly's character "we can do this"

male baddie who has a big problem with women shoots her gf

aly cries over dead gf's body

different story but lots of same elements in aly's characters arc

and same result - leave guy for girl and just when things look good - baddie kills gf

Thank you, helpful information perhaps, I haven't thought about all that. The final part did get me thinking a bit, though.

Maybe the fact that the only time I watched this movie the tape was really bad and I could barely see the actors... then I taped from TV, but never watched it. I got the DVD yesterday, I think I'm going to give it a try tonight.

Oz release

Postby Indygo » Tue May 20, 2003 9:52 pm

I know I talked to heaps of Aussies about this film earlier on... Did anyone ever happen to find out if the movie was getting a sell-through DVD release as well as the rental release? My search to find an ex-rental copy of BtCL has so far been in vain, and believe me I feel like I have scoured every video store in Sydney.

(And call me pedantic, but the whole point of the search is that I kinda want the Australian version with the original title and the orange-y coloured artwork. The green "Rip It Off" version from the US doesn't look as nice :) But I will buy that one if I have to...)

For my fellow Aussie fans, if you have a Civic Video store near you they have this movie for rent. I was talking to the manager of the one near us and if you want to get any movies that they have they are happy to order you in a copy if you want to buy it. I don't know how much they would charge you for it though but hey still a good way to get it as retail stores don't seem to stock it.

So, I got a curious bee in my bonnet after checking out Dr.G's screen caps. I went to eBay and saw that "Rip It Off" is listed there.cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...eName=WD1V

Then I did a bit more research, in spite of really horrid reviews, and saw it was directed by a woman named Gigi Gaston. Hmmm. I googled. Wow.www.thecreamwillrise.com/cream/gigi.htm

Then more wow.www.docurama.com/filmmake...5&bid=1653

Very interesting, talented and goodlooking woman. But this last part is best:www.sdbuzz.com/entertain/...wkins.html

Dang it, some reason, I couldn't get in everything I wanted to include aout Aly's director, Gigi Gaston. The cool part about the last link I posted above is that Gigi and Sophie B. are now a couple. So I went a bought Rip It Off on eBay. :grin .

Even if it's bad. Some of Amber's films haven't been too great, but heck, gotta support Aly and Amber even if it's not such great stuff, ya know what I mean??

Edited to add two more pieces of trivia. 1.Alexis is also in the film. 2. It was released by Lion's Gate films, the guys who wound up releasing Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 911."

Oh, sorry. There's a number three, a link to the trailer to "Rip It Off:"movies2.nytimes.com/gst/m..._id=273891

Off to bed now, really!

Edited to add "Thanks for the edit, Warduke!"

I purchased this DVD off of Ebay for $6.00 with shipping. It is a horrible film but Aly rocks! Her character is very different from any of her other roles. I know I'm biased but she is seriously one of the best actresses I know. Her range of emotion astounds me, and when she gets into the gut-wrenching crying stuff.... :bow .

If you like Aly you should try to see this movie. Honestly, the woman could make any movie (re: Date Movie) worth watching.

And it's pretty cool to hear her say "fuck." :blush
As one, they turn to the soda machine. It flies back into the door like a cannonball. Willow looks at it, at Tara. She doesn't let go of her hand.

I've watched this movie as well. I wouldn't put it in the "OMG it's horrible!" category, but it's certainly not a great film.

Aly herself has said that working on that movie was a big mess...and she wasn't really happy with the process or the product.

However, Aly's performance makes this worth watching. It is different from what we've seen from Aly in the past. And it stretches her acting muscles a bit more than the AP movies or HIMYM. Just Aly's performance in the last scene was enough to make me tear up...but only because of her performance. Based on the script and the fact that the other actors didn't seem to care much about developing their characters, I probably would have watched the final scene and said, "eh!"

Anyway, my two cents.
