Oscar Race

So who are you're picks for Oscars? In all fairness, I'll start

best pic - LOTR-Return of the King (its inevitable)

best actor- should be Sean Penn, but might be Bill Murray

best actress-better be Charlize Theron (though I will admit i was quite taken aback by the 13 year old Castle-Haynes's performance)

supporting actor-tim robbins

supporting actress-Renee Zelwiger

director-tough call

screenplay-also a tough call

song-i dont care as long as its one of alison krauss' 2

so who are you're pics??

I can´t pick because I have not seen the movies, except LotR, though I sometimes get the impression that the oscar voters have not seen the movies either.:p

I´m not convinced LotR will win because it´s probably not depressing, melodramatic or boring enough to meet the standards for best film.

Every year LOTR has been nominated for an oscar and not won I do a big song and dance about not ever watching the oscars again because they stink. I mean, in what universe is a Beautiful Mind a better film than LOTR!

Sorry, us Kiwis are intensely patriotic about our little films since almost everyone in the country had involvement in them in some way or knows someone who did.

I'll always watch the Oscars anyway! There's something morbidly fascinating about watching Hollywood congratulate itself.

So, fingers crossed the Academy actually recognises how brilliant the entire trilogy is this year.

As for the other awards, as long as Lost in Translation gets best original screenplay, i don't really have much of an opinion. But I do have to support the talented young Kiwi Keisha Castle-Hughes because she's a very nice young lady and her performance in Whale Rider was spectacular. But apart from those, I'll just watch and be surprised on the night.

Alcy

I just watched Whale Rider a few nights ago and i was stunned at Castl-Haynes performance. I would throw something at my TV if she beat Charlize Theron, but i have little doubt that if she keeps it up, she will find herself in the nominee pool again. Beautiful young woman with all that talent... and a Kiwi to boot!

Yes, I am rooting for LOTR too. I took my roomate to the midnight showing of Return of the King and she started crying saying how I was her Sam. (mushiness) How can i not want that one to win?!

Speaking of Whale Rider, I was blown away to see that Oxygen will be running it March 1. A gift to po' folk (living in boondocks towns) like me! :banana

GG Why Oxygen? There couldn't be a Xena connection, could there? ;) (The grandfather character who was in the ep "Legacy", not to mention everything else Kiwi) Out

Charlize and Johnny won the SAG. I wouldn't mind Johnny winning but really for a career not for pirates. The esemble for for LOTR won, should be a sign for good things on oscar night!

Peter Jackson had better get the Best Director. The man's bloody brilliant.

Oscars

I can't believe that the Academy dropped the grudge against Penn long enough to give him the award. Didn't see the movie, so I've no idea specifically, but for his body of work, I think it's been a long time coming.

At the risk of being slightly offtopic. Who was it that sang the song from "triplets of belleville". I missed that, and then perked up when I heard the song.

I enjoyed watching the oscars, Billy Crystal was hysterical and the opening sequence was brilliant. I'm glad that ROTK swept the board although the pervious two movies deserved more as well. Overall though a very funny night.

So, the day started and I knew my name and had my pants on. So far, so good. Yay.

Yep it was an 11 for 11 sweep for ROTK. I'm so happy for Peter Jackson and all the other hard working folks from his crew. It was a monumental achievement to do three great films at once. Yay ROTK!

Still, I wish that Bill Murray had taken home the Oscar for best sctor but can't have everything.

drlloyd: ack! It's been royal pain Googling the answer to your "Belleville" question (and I didn't tape/don't remember who). I can tell you this much: nominated were composer Benoit Charest and lyricist Sylvain Chomet. Charest performed the song, w/ able back-up by the group "Betty".* I just can't find out the lead singer! It might Chomet's wife. According to CNN "Chomet said he created the song with his British wife, incorporating onomatopoeic sounds with words from both their native languages" . . . but I can't find out her name. Billboard also reports someone named (?) "M" but I'm not sure if that's an error! (And Oscar.com doesn't report the performers)

[* I've had a special fondness for Betty, since I heard them at the '93 LGBT March on Washington]

Now, what I wanna know: what the heck was Sting playing on "You Will Be My Ain True Love"? It wasn't a dulcimer. It wasn't a lute. It wasn't a zither. It wasn't a mandolin. Whatever it was, it was cool! (By a nose, "My Ain" was my personal fave of the bunch---can't fault them for picking Annie Lennox, though).

GG Some kind of hurdy-gurdy? I think of that as having a crank. :confused Out

Anyone else feel a strange kind of pride re: Allison Krauss? It's like "Willow and Tara fans had her first w/ 'That Kind of Love'"! (Just the way I feel about Ngila Dickson's big win: Xena fans had her first!) :heart

heya kittens,

my congratulations to the LOTR gang and their huge success, fancy winning all 11 of the awards they were nominated for! The awards were on TV while I was at work last night and I'm sure I annoyed my team by dancing around after each win.

This is cool for Peter Jackson and all those Kiwis who put in so much effort.

And I'm pleased to see that I was spot on in saying Sofia should win the Oscar for the Lost in Translation screenplay.

Ah, very happy right now :party

Apparently his wife's name is Betty Bonifassi, but I can't find any pictures of her.

I also quite liked that Belleville song, the best of the night I thought. And that's despite the fact that I love Alison Krauss, have always liked Annie Lennox and thought Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara did a great job. And I have no idea what that damn thing Sting was pretending to play could be, except maybe a hurdy-gurdy as you guessed. I dimly recall seeing someone at a folk festival playing something similar.

For me the high points were Barbarian Invasions winning, the Jack Black-Will Farrell song, the Blake Edwards tribute, seeing Bill Murray present Lost In Translation, and seeing Scarlett Johannson and Angelina Jolie looking so beautiful. Loved the Adrien Brody breath freshener gag too. Low point was Bill Murray losing - I actually booed the screen, which is pathetic really - and the fact that it took them a damn hour to give out the second award.

My main reason for posting though is to see if anyone saw the Indie Spirit awards. I thought they were great last year, missed them this year and all I've heard is that Lost In Translation did great and Charlize won. Were there any good political speeches like last year? Was John Waters funny?

"Learning, playing and loving, and combinations thereof, are a good way to spend a lifetime. Admittedly, a difficult regimen, but nonetheless not beyond attainment.
