Yeah, it's true that OMWF in French is really awful, though it kinda made me laugh... Since i'm also a translator (or at least, will be in september after my thesis is done), i also have fun compairing the French and English versions, and sometimes, it's really terrible... Like for the translation of "slayer" in french, they waited almost 2 seasons before they decided which term to use. which was quite disturbing, cause before they would use many different words to refer to the same concept. At the moment, i'm truing to subtitle season 6 for a friend who doesn't speak English, so that she doesn't have to wait to see it. It's really funny to do it and at least, i can do it as i want, cause sometimes, the subtitles leave much to be desired too. As for the Tara's French voice, i only heard it in season 4 since i saw seasons 5 and 6 in english, but it's true that it's quite awful...

BtVS in French

Postby saule77 » Wed Aug 07, 2002 6:22 pm

I have to say the following: I used to watch BtVS when I lived at home in France (well, the first 2 seasons anyway, it's been a while since I moved out of the country...) and never thought anything of the dubbing.

Now, I live in Ireland and I watch Buffy in English, own videos / DVDs in English and would never have it any other way.

This was just reinforced by my experience this Saturday night. I saw a double bill of Buffy scheduled on my TV guide and I thought "Marvellous"... I had to switch it off after 3 minutes. It was too much for me: Willow sounds so stupid... At least in English, her insecurities are cute and endearing. In French, they're nothing but annoying.

And believe me, it breaks my heart to say that. You couldn't find another W/T shipper like me this side of the Atlantic!

Anyway, back to the subject:

Ever since I first saw her in Buffy, Amber Benson has owned my heart. I've never met her (very jealous of all the American Kittens who have met her several times... I mean, she even remembers Xita and calls her by her name! Every Kitten's dream...) but she seems so charming, easy going, funny, clever and can I say HOT??? drool :drool And an amazing actress...

Gotta go to bed right now (2.15am) but I'll be back for the rest!

You can tell it's not gonna have a happy ending when the main guy's all bumpy (Tara in "Crush")

*************************************************

Like you, back in my X-Files days, I couldn't watch it dubbed in French, because I was so used to wtaching it in English ;)

But I like Btvs in French, and the dubbing is really good :)

Some jokes are even better in French, IMHO ;)

About Amber, I'll double the :drool

Salut, Chris!!!

Ça alors, une autre traductrice? :)

Christine

Just talking some more about Btvs dubbed in French (I wish I could make a video clip of W & T in French but I don't have the equipment... I'll see what I can do ;) ) and about translation, since I also work in this field ;)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I think the best word for "Slayer" in French (by analogy with the English version of the St. George story,

wherein he "slays" the dragon:) ). I don't like "tueuse" [the word is the feminine version of "killer"]; at least "chasseresse" [="huntress"] is more poetic (and would then be the equivalent of the word used in the Swiss/Austrian versions of the show).

Re: BtVS in French

Et Faith se fache et dit "i'm not the killer, i'm the slayer!"

Yet an other post about the way BtVS is dubbed in French and the inappropriate words they sometimes chose...

Hello Sagi ;)

Voilà, si tu as des questions, tu peux m'e-mailer (dolipranvero@noos.fr) ;)

Good evening.

I've been watching Buffy since they started showing it here and pretty much fell in love with Willow from the beginning. I like Willow and Tara because they're so romantic and beautiful together. I hope I might someday have what they do. I read some of the posts about dubbing and am very glad that here only children's shows are dubbed. The situation with Btvs is kinda odd here: two different channels have shown seasons 1-3 of Buffy and one of them has also shown seasons 1 and 2 of Angel. I've only heard rumours about when they might show more.

Good night.

Salut aux kittens francaises!!! :)

Merci. :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phew, just tried to write that in French which was really hard for me. :rolleyes I asked if the French-speaking kittens know a website where I could download BtVS-episodes with the French dubbing as they made me quite curious what Tara, Willow and the other characters sound like, especially in the musical "OMWF".

Tara:"No, it´s okay. Lost is good. Willow and I always know how to find each other."

Willow:"I´m a breast gal myself, but then again you knew that."

Miaou!

------------------------------------------------------------

I feel like I should try this, even though I live in the US, and I don't have a keyboard that can do french accents. I'd also like to hear OMWF in French. Even if it's terrible, now I'm all curious. :) It's also good for me to practice my french, since my mother made me learn it, and I'm going to see her again in September. But I would like to say that I'm really happy to see how many international kittens we have. (do I translate Miaou or not? :) )

Yup, it sure is. I can't believe that entire paragraphs of French translate into one sentence of English, heh, it's just like with subtitles, someone will talk for 5 minutes and you get one sentence of translation. Always makes me feel like I am missing something. :p

In any case, please do post the complete translation to your posts, and also please keep it a bit more on topic, i.e. about WT and AA and what they mean to you etc. :)

For OMWF, the only place where i managed to listen to it in french was here www.zemok.com. It's a radio, and it's in streaming (you can't download it), so you just have to be lucky enough to listen to it when they air OMWF. Anyway, i think the best moment it's on frindays (in the evening, GMT), cause it's a live a live show and they air what people request. Anyway, it's really worth listening to even when OMWF is not on, cause they air all the BtVS songs, and i thatks to it, i got to know ots of artist i'd never heard of before and who are really cool.

I never saw any website with episodes in french to download, but sometimes, french website have an MP3 section where you can find some dialogues in French. i'm gonna check if i find some and if so, i'll post the link;)

Trust me, you don't want to hear OMWF in French!!!!! :puke

I don't think there's a place to download Btvs episodes in French, but I'll keep looking ;)

There should be some audio files though...

Here you go! This is Willow & Xander (Alex in French) arguing when Willow finds out about him and Cordelia in "Innocence" (Zipped mp3 file) :

bouche.enfer.free.fr/down..._cordy.zip

I'll try to find Tara & Willow audio clips, but I can guarantee anything... Maybe I'll try to make one myself ;)

*********************************************

In Britain they don't bother translating the eps into English, as most Brits speak pretty good American. ;)

(I am thrown by some things though. Reading Chris Golden's "The Wisdom of War" I was utterly bewildered by suggestions Spike had a "duster". That's his leather jacket, right?)

I'm glad I get to see and understand the original versions, a lot of the acting is what you say, not just how you look or move on-screen, and so thank goodness the USA and England kinda share a language and I can hear AB and AH's voices and understand them.

One thing is that "Tara" is pronounced differently over here. Americans say it like "terror" whereas Brits would say it the way Giles does, with longer "a" sounds.

It's weird, because the vast majority of times you hear it said on the show (i.e. when Giles isn't saying it - I'm not sure Spike has ever said Tara's name) it is pronounced in the American way, but my head automatically corrects it, so that if ever I read the name or think it, it's "Tahra."

HI Kitten!

The only thing is that the german translation sucks sometimes. I wonder how they are going to translate :coffe, food, kisses and gay love. :lol

and as I'm rewatching OMWF for the thousandth time, when Buffy is singing "Something to Sing About", Giles says "she needs back up - Anya, Tahra"......

In fact I think I only ever hear Buffy/Willow and maybe Xander say "Tearha". It was interesting reading an article where Alyson Hannigan said Joss Whedon had insisted that there was no "Tearha" on this set....

Re: pronunciation

Postby themagicpixie » Thu Jan 16, 2003 8:33 am

Hmm. Well I know Anya tells Willow "We all know Tara up and left you" and I think she may lean slightly more towards the "Tahra" than the others, but I can't quite remember...

It's funny, I was thinking of OMWF as an example of an ep where Giles uses Tara's name. I guess it doesn't get said very much :(

Edited to add: I'm stupid, atse. Was Joss commenting on there being no "terror" on set, or suggesting how Tara's name should be pronounced, or what? Thanks...!

Giles pronounces Tara in the same way as we do here in Australia. It's like Americans say ass & we say arse.Remember the scene in "The Yoko Factor" when Giles says to Buffy-"You'll never train with me again,he's gonna kick your arse." Hope this helps!
