Buffy Location Shoot - 3/14

Postby BBOvenGuy » Wed Mar 13, 2002 7:54 pm

Another bit of info from my new contact with the password to the eidc shoot sheet:

quote:
3/14-3/15 Griffith Park

From 17:00 to 6:00 the next morning

For those of you who don't know LA, Griffith Park is very, very big. Finding the shoot will involve driving around the whole place and looking for the fluorescent green "V" signs.

The Buffy crew has been there many times before. They were at the merry-go-round for "Shadow." The scenes in the woods with the motorcycle demons were shot there. I'm sure they've been there other times as well.

Access in Griffith Park varies. Sometimes you can see everything. Sometimes you can see nothing. Sometimes you can see only the base camp and not the shoot.

What am I saying here? It's luck of the draw whether or not this shoot will have anything to offer. But then, that's pretty much true with every shoot.

Also, I'm not sure if the listing means the shoot will start Thursday night and go to Friday morning, or if it means it will go from 17:00 to 6:00 on both Thursday and Friday. I imagine if we find the shoot tomorrow, the PA's or the Security people will be able to tell us.

Supposedly this is going to be the shoot of the scene where _________ does _________ to _________. Those of you who have been following the spoiler thread shouldn't have too much trouble figuring out what I mean. quote:

I am dense.
I’ve been reading the spoiler thread and can't quite find the exact words to fill in those blanks. Could you be a sweetie and post a small note at the spoiler thread for me please?

Well, perhaps that's not the best way of wording things, but it's difficult being cryptic.

I could say it's the scene where blank blanks blank. Does that help?

Nope Bob that does not help, my mind is sort of blank blank right now, as opposed to always, so like Epicurus asked could post this in the spoiler thread as well, only without the blank blank blank? Pretty Please?

If that's the way its written, I'd say it's just the one night's shooting.

Question: What's the significance of the flourescent "V" signs? Well, the significance is obvious, but why a "V", what does it stand for?

Over here in the UK, its usually "UNIT" or something similar.

I would assume that "V" stands for "Vampire." That's on the signs that the crew puts out so that everyone working on the shoot will know where to gather.

Here's what one looks like:

Just as a bit of useless trivia, Roswell uses orange signs that say "Area 15."

That's quite a sensible thing I guess, especially in areas where lots of different shows/movies might be shooting at once. As I saud, over here its usually "UNIT" or "FILM UNIT" for evrything. Ony differentiation would be the production title or company name as an addition - I guess it helps keep things mysterious as to what's being shot!

So Bob, are you going out there tonight?

If so, I'm sending you over virtual RedBull adn Pro-Plus tablets (do you have those in the states? I'm sure you do but they might be named differently!)

Ahhh, memories of Location Shooting... makes me want to get back into it

Alas, no luck at the location shoot tonight. They were up in the hills near the Greek Theater, and the mountain road leading in there was blocked by Security. A similar thing happened during the "Bargaining" shoots last summer.

I'll hop over there tomorrow, just to check. Griffith Park isn't that far away. We might be out of luck until I get new shoot info, though.

Bob - Thanks for posting the location info. I went over to Griffith Park at about 7:00. I found the signs at about 7:30 (we drove all around the 134 freeway side of the park first).

When we got to the gate there was no guard. I drove quite a ways up the road, but I eventually chickened out and turned back. On the way out, I saw that a guard had been posted at the gate. He must have just been posted or maybe he was on a break when I came in.

It was pretty much impossible to be inconspicuous as the only vehicles up there were crew vehicles. There was also nowhere to park the car to continue on foot. It was just a narrow winding road.

So anyway, all I saw was a couple of cranes with floodlights attached. Woo hoo!

Too bad I didn't have your cel phone number or something - I could have called you when I got in. Since you do this all the time, I'm sure you're braver than I am and would have kept going. : )

I've got a question...
Is this Griffith Park a public park? I lived in Newport beach for 3 years, and kinda figured out the "LA Shooting Permit" thing...but can they actually secure and make private something that is public? (if Griffith Park is indeed public)! I had friends that were Rave Promoters that would get a shooting permit from the city of LA to shoot a movie scene...but it would really be a Rave...with movie cameras as a decoy! This, of course was way back in the early 90's!!! The LA-50 got hip to this trick!
So anyway...I am just curious...is Griffith Park is a Public Park???

Yes, Griffith Park is a public park, but it closes at 10:00pm, and the mountain roads close at sunset for safety reasons. Thus when the Buffy crew is up on one of those mountain roads, as they were last night, you can't get to them.

They're up there again tonight, too, and alas I had the same results as yesterday. Maybe we'll get 'em next time.

Edited to add: One of the keys to success in the location-shoot-scouting biz is to be as inconspicuous as possible. Thus when the Buffy crew is someplace where a visiting spectator will really stand out, it's not a good idea to be that spectator. You want to be someplace where you can blend in with the background. If you're the only non-crewmember in sight, they're likely to chase you away.

Sounds like you've had experience in the being chased away department!

Maybe you need some 'black ops' gear like Riley!

Now I picture a bunch of people pretending to be trees. Hey! When did the desert become a forest? Did that tree just move? Nah...

Actually, they have their own fake trees, which they use to hide stuff in the shot that they don't want to see - usually signs or sprinklers or equipment or stuff like that. Out in the desert Tuesday afternoon it was pretty funny to see a set of fake Joshua trees all lying on their sides in the dirt while we were surrounded by real ones for as far as the eye could see.

Is Griffith's Park where they had that light show at Christmas? Because I think I went there.

------------------
Willow: "Besides, spells going awry, friends in danger...I'm really nothing special."
Tara: "No, you are"
Willow and Tara's first real conversation - "Hush"

"Hear that baby? You're my always"
Willow to Tara - "Tough Love"

"HEY! You're gonna back off! She said no and thats it, you're not going to make her do something that she doesn't want to. And if you try, you're going to have to go through me. Understood?"
Tara standing up for Willlow and being the protective ex and bad ass - "Older and Far Away"

"Hi Tara, How are you? I was wondering if maybe you want to go out sometime? For coffee? food? kissing and gay love?"
Willow practicing asking Tara out - "Normal Again"

Okay, this afternoon I drove back to Griffith Park, because curiosity simply wouldn't let me leave it alone. I went back to the gate where I've been blocked the past two days and decided I was going to venture beyond it:

It turned out to be a really nice nature hike, but I'm afraid I'm no closer to figuring out exactly where the Buffy crew was shooting. I walked at least a mile up the road and saw nothing that looked like a place where you'd set up a big film shoot. It's more likely they ventured into the woods somewhere along the road.

If you'd like to see the pictures from my walk, click here.

Tenetria, how far up did you go? Did you make it past that big thing that looks like a water tank and has the tree-mural painted on it? Did you make it past that wide piece of concrete up near the top? Where did they put the cranes?

Bob, I did not get to the top. There was a fairly large parking lot on the left. A little further on, the signs indicated to turn left onto another road. I proceeded up that road quite a ways but I didn't see the mural you mentioned.

At the point that I turned around, I could see the lights only. As I made my way back down I could see the crane as well as the fact that they seemed to have a pretty large area lit up. The lit up area was to my left as I drove back down. It almost looked like a little valley or something.

Right. The parking lot is for the tennis courts. The left turn you saw leads to the gate in my pic up there.

I saw the valley down below the road. In daylight it looked like a maintenance area for park vehicles. I didn't even think it was worth photographing, but I could have been wrong.

I guess we'll just have to wait for the episode to see exactly where they were.

BBOvenGuy do you know if they will be filming epiode 21 in the desert again? If they don't then it is a very good assumption that Spike will be back in Sunnydale by epiosde 21.

As far as I know, there are no more plans for the Buffy crew to be shooting in the desert.

That doesn't necessarily mean Spike will be back in Sunnydale, though. He could simply not be in the episode, or they could be filming him on a soundstage somewhere. We'll just have to wait and see.quote:
