Fic - What if....?

Postby Ginner » Sun May 05, 2002 12:43 pm

Haven't posted here in what seems like forever. I'm a regular lurker now....;) But i decided to slink out of lurkdom for a sec to post the first part of my new fic. I hope you guys like it.

What If…?

Part 1

Rating: Between PG and PG-13 I guess.

Disclaimers: The characters in this story do not belong to me. Nor do the actors/actresses (unfortunately). They are the property of Mutant Enemy, UPN and the man himself, Joss Whedon.

Summary: What if things had been a little different in Sunnydale? What if Sunnydale didn’t exist?

**********

Willow Rosenberg rushed through the front doors of Darwin High School, bag slung over her shoulder and a determined look on her face. The crowd of people packing into the corridor parted to let her through and some tried to slink into the shadows, afraid it was them she was looking for. The fire in the girl’s eyes was as read as her hair, and enough to make a grown man shake with terror. Willow pushed past a small group of people in her way and grinned evilly when she saw her target. Jonathon Levingson was collecting books from his locker, when the door to it slammed shut and a shadow was suddenly cast over him. He turned around as quick as lightening and swallowed hard when he saw the person in front of him.

Willow: Good morning, Jonathon.

Jonathon: H-hey Willow.

Willow: How are you this morning?

The “small for his age” boy nodded, shakily.

Jonathon: Fine thanks.

Willow stood there, expectant, while Jonathon stared blankly at her, still terrified. His eyes widened when he realised why Willow was looking at him the way she was.

Jonathon: H-how are you?

Willow: Me? I’m kind of annoyed actually. You see, I was out last night with the gang, minding my own business, when a cop car pulled up beside me. The nice police man got out of the car and asked me if I had anything to do with the Hemery incident. You know the one. Warren Hemery was taking into hospital after someone beat him up?

Jonathon nodded.

Willow: You wouldn’t have anything to do with them questioning me, would you?

The boy began to shake his head vigorously.

Jonathon: No! N-no I w-wouldn’t d-do-

Willow slammed her hand onto the locker and moved even closer to Jonathon.

Willow: You better not be lying to me, Johnny. Because if you are….

Willow’s voice was threatening and full of warning.

Jonathon: I’m-I’m not.

The redhead backed off and smiled and Jonathon.

Willow: Good.

She punched his chin lightly and walked off. Eyes of everyone in the corridor followed her.

**********

The beel rang, signalling first period, and willow got up off the couch in the corner of the sitting area. As she started to walk down towards the science block, she caught site of her best friend and called out to the taller girl, who was about to pummel “Mr Popular”, Percy West.

Willow: Hey Faith!

The brunette looked up and smiled. Shoving Percy into the row of lockers behind him, faith’s smile grew wider as she walked towards Willow.

Faith: Will, looking great as always.

Faith growled and winked at Willow, who just stood there shaking her head and smiling.

Faith: What’s with all the leather anyway?

Willow: I decided a change of wardrobe was in order.

Faith grinned and put her arm around Willow’s shoulders as they started to walk down the corridor.

Faith: Welcome to my world.

Willow rolled her eyes.

Faith: Did you have that talk with Johnny-boy?

Willow: Yeah. He didn’t blab.

Faith: You think he’d tell you if he did.

Willow: Well, no, probably not. Doesn’t matter anyway. Warren’s in hospital. That’ll be the last time he tries to cut my arm with a broken glass bottle.

Faith: Still can’t believe he did that. Never thought he had any guts. Plus, starting a fight with you, even I wouldn’t do that.

Willow: Damn straight.

Out of the blue, a voice surfaced behind them.

Voice: What’s on today’s agenda?

Both girls turned around and came face to face with a short, spiky-haired, solemn looking boy.

Faith: Oz, man! Where’ve you been hiding?

Oz: I stay under my rock a lot nowadays.

Willow: Oh really?

Oz: well, when the trout hasn’t got me locked in the basement for something I didn’t do.

Willow and Faith looked at each other, then at Oz.

Faith: Trout?

Oz: Yeah. You know, like salmon.

Oz turned and casually walked into the classroom, leaving Willow and Faith looking confused.

Faith: Oz has an evil pet trout that locks him in his basement?

Willow: I think he meant his mom.

Willow stared blankly ahead.

Willow: I think.

**********

Willow tapped her pen on the table, rhythmically and yawned. History first period equalled hell in her books. Willow looked up when she felt something hit her on the side of the head. Faith was sitting in her usual seat across from her, next to Oz, looking at her. She mouthed sorry and pointed to the floor. Looking down, Willow saw a paper aeroplane. She raised her eyebrow questioningly and looked at Faith again. The brunette rolled her eyes and scribbled something down on another piece of paper. She held it up so Willow could see.

“Open it.”

Nodding, Willow bent down and picked up the paper aeroplane and unfolded it. Faith had written something on the inside.

“Wills, the Oz-man just told me that

Percy West wants to ask you out on a date!”

Willow frowned and began writing her reply. She sent it flying back to Faith and the brunette opened it.

“Why does he want to ask me out?

And weren’t you getting ready to pummel

Him this morning?”

Faith chuckled quietly and sent the plane back once she’d wrote on it.

“Yeah. But only cuz he tried to

Grope me in the lunch line yesterday. And

What do you mean ‘why does he want

To ask me out’? Have you

Looked in the mirror lately?”

Willow raised her eyebrows at Faith, who held her hands up in defence and indicated Oz. The spiky-haired boy nodded his head in agreement. Willow scrawled down an answer and sent the plane back, wonder how the teacher hadn’t caught them yet.

“What do you think I should say?”

Faith rolled her eyes again and looked at Willow who shrugged. She wrote a reply and sent the aeroplane flying again. Jonathon sat in the corner of the room watching the interaction between the two.

“Hell, I’d say go for it. I’d bag him if I

didn’t swing the other way.”

Willow covered her mouth to stop a laugh escaping and Faith stuck her tongue out at her.

“I don’t know. Sure, he’s honey…

But you heard what happened with him

And Cordelia. He asked her out, they

Went on a few dates, next thing she new

Rumours about him, her and the back seat

Of a car were flying around the school.

And everyone knows Percy made them up.”

This time when Willow sent the plane back, Faith wasn’t ready and it flew into the back of her head. She jumped, startled and almost yelped. Giving Willow a mock angry look, she picked up the plan and read Willow’s reply, writing one of her own and sending it back.

“Then I’ll get Oz-man to tell him no.

don’t worry about it. He isn’t worth

the hassle anyway. And you’re way

too good for him.”

The plane took off one last time and Willow smiled when she read what Faith had put. She mouthed ‘thank you’ before putting the paper plane in her bag and began tapping her pencil on the table again. Someone knocking on the classroom door made Willow look up. She watched as the teacher walked to the door and accepted a note of the person standing outside. He read in and told the person to come in.

Teacher: Well class, it seems we have a new student joining us today. Tara Maclay.

Willow saw Faith’s eyebrows shoot up as the girl walked into the room and she turned to Willow. She made panting gestures and Willow tried hard not to laugh. Tara dropped her head and Willow watched as the girl’s blonde hair covered her face. Her head tilted to one side, Willow continued to look at the girl until Faith threw a paper ball at her head, making Willow look up. While they mouthed out a conversation, Tara’s eyes swept over the room, looking for a place to sit. There was a table at the very back of the room, where no one was sitting. Walking down the length of the classroom, Tara sat down in the seat. The desk was three chairs back and one across from where Willow was sitting, the same as Faith’s. Only Faith’s was three in front and one across. Willow glanced behind her too look at Tara. The girl’s head was drooped again and she was reading from a study book just like the one Willow was supposed to be studying from. After Faith managed to catch Willow’s attention with another paper ball, she wiggled her eyebrow and made more panting gestures. Willow rolled her eyes and turned her attention back to her book.

**********

Students flooded out of classrooms all around them. Willow and Faith walked out of their history room, talking.

Faith: Did ya see the new girl?

Willow: You know I did.

Faith: Hot or what?

Willow: Yeah.

Faith stopped and turned to Willow, arching an eyebrow.

Faith: Yeah? If I’d asked you something like that yesterday, you would have been all; Faith! You can’t ask me that! In fact… you did say that yesterday.

Willow: Okay, one; I do not talk like that. Two;

Willow was interrupted by Oz. Who had just appeared behind the two girls.

Oz: What’s the dilemma?

Faith: Willow’s converting.

Oz: Oh. Have fun with that. I’ll catch you guys later.

Silently, and somewhat calmly, Oz walked off in the direction of his next class and Willow turned to Faith.

Willow: I am not converting!

Willow’s voice was a strained whisper. Faith just laughed and pursed her lips.

Faith: Whatever.

Willow: Faith….

The brunette began to walk off and Willow followed her.

Faith: Hey, I said whatever.

Willow: You don’t believe me, do you?

Faith: My gaydar must be off today.

Willow: Faith!

Part 2

Willow slammed the front door closed behind her and started walking up the stairs. She stopped when she heard her father’s voice.

MR: Just where have you been?

Willow turned around to face her dad. Not in the slightest bit phased by the anger in his question.

Willow: School.

The redhead’s voice was full of sarcasm.

MR: School finished two hours ago.

Willow: And?

MR: Where have you been?!

Mr Rosenberg’s voice filled the house, making it tremble and shake.

Willow: Out.

MR: Your mother and I told you, you’re grounded until you tell us the truth about the Hemery beating.

Willow: You don’t believe a thing I say anyway, so if I told you the truth, you’d probably think I was lying. Even if you didn’t, I’d still be grounded.

MR: So you did put him in hospital.

Willow: Would you believe me if I told you he started it?

MR: Why should I believe you after you’ve already lied to us?

Willow: Why should I bother?

Ignoring anything else her father said, Willow made her way to her bedroom. She threw her school bag onto her bed and picked up a chair that stood by her desk. She stood it on its two back legs and pressed the backrest into the space between the handle of her door and the door itself, preventing anyone from getting in. She flopped onto her bed and looked up at the ceiling.

Today was complete and utter…. Crap. Being questioned by cops, okay…. so I did do the things they’re questioning me about…. New girl, who for some reason I can’t get out of my head, Larry being his usual self and getting under my skin, Percy West asking me out, grounded and my dad being. Yeah…. Things can’t possibly get any better.

Willow sighed heavily and reached for her school bag. She rummaged around inside until she found what she was looking for. It was a picture she had drew earlier that day in art class. Willow was quite the artist, but she never told anyone of her talent. She hadn’t even showed Faith her drawings. The picture she held in front of her was of the new girl. Tara. She didn’t know why, but Willow had felt compelled to draw her. The solemn look on the blonde’s face in the picture was the same as it had been when Tara walked into history class that morning. Willow’s brow furrowed and she looked hard at the picture. There was something about her.

A loud rapping on her bedroom door woke her up. Willow rubbed her eyes and groaned loudly.

Willow: What?

MR: Tea’s on the table.

Willow: I’m not hungry.

Mr Rosenberg’s footsteps grew fainter as she walked back along the hall and down the stairs. Willow put her hand behind her head and sighed. It seemed as if that was all she ever did anymore. Sigh. Her mind wondered to earlier that day and Tara arriving at class. The look on the girl’s face as she walked to the back of the classroom and the way her hair hung over her face, and she kept constantly tucking it behind her ears, but it never stayed there. Realising if she stayed in her room any longer she’d go mad, Willow got up and moved to her window. Taking her long, black, leather jacket off the back of a chair in the corner of the room, she opened her window and jumped onto the roof of the porch. Carefully and expertly, she climbed down the drainpipe and put her coat on once she reached the ground.

That gets easier every time.

Keeping to the shadows, Willow began to walk further and further away from her house, no set destination in mind. The redhead glanced at her watch.

11:30. I wonder if Faith’ll still be up.

Willow’s head shot up as she heard a noise coming from a dark alleyway in front of her. She thrust her right hand into her pocket and pulled out her gold pocketknife. Pressing the button on the side, the blade shot up and Willow began walking closer towards the alley. Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows. Willow brought the knife up, ready to attack, when the sound of something hitting the ground and a loud gasp filled the street. Standing before Willow was the new girl. She had been the one in the alley way and she was the one currently being held at knifepoint by Willow. The redhead let her knife fall to the ground and her mouth hung open. She tried to apologize, but she couldn’t form any words. They looked at each other for a long moment, before Tara bent down, picked up her book and ran off in the direction Willow had been walking.

Willow: Wait! Hey! Wait!

No matter how loud Willow called after her, the blonde didn’t stop or look back.

Part 3

Faith hadn’t showed up for school that morning. Which wasn’t that unusual seeing as how this was Faith and Willow would be shocked if she turned up for school at all, but things always seemed different without the brunette around.

Willow collected her lunch from the lunch lady and walked towards the table Oz was already occupying.

Willow: Faith not showed up yet?

Oz looked up at Willow and shook his head, and then arching an eyebrow he nodded towards Willow’s outfit. The redhead was dressed in a black tank top and black leather trousers. Her long leather coat reached her ankles and the black streaks in her hair went with the outfit perfectly.

Oz: Dare?

Willow: I wanted a change. Why can’t people, meaning you and Faith, get that?

Being the master of solitude that he was, Oz went back to his lunch without another word. The lunchroom buzzed with multiple conversations the students were having. Laughter and giggles, mixed with some angry words ceased when a loud crash filled the room. Head’s turned in the direction of the crash and Willow looked up from her food. Standing next to the lunch counter was a blonde girl. At her feet were the remains of her lunch she had seemingly just collected. Willow shifted in her seat to get a better look at the girl and her eyes widened when she saw that it was Tara. Watching the girl bend down to clean up the mess she made, Willow fought with the decision whether to help Tara or not. It wasn’t the sort of thing Willow did. Usually she’d laugh when something like that happened, but for some reason this time was different. Making her decision, she stood up and began walking towards the front of the lunchroom, but before she got even five paces, Tara had left. Willow sighed and sat back down. It took her a moment to realise Oz was looking at her.

Willow: What?

Oz: You were going to go and help her then.

Willow: No I wasn’t. I don’t help people who aren’t groupies remember?

Oz: Ah yes, the group motto. Look out for yourself and those alike.

Willow: Meaning you and Faith.

Oz shrugged and finished off his lunch before standing up.

Oz: Meet you outside the gates?

Willow: Same as always.

Oz nodded and slipped his bag onto his shoulder. He left the lunchroom, high-fiving Devon Macleish on his way out.

**********

Lunch had ended and Willow was on her way to her next class. Faith still hadn’t shown and it was unlikely she would. Walking into the room, her mind occupied with a number of thoughts, she didn’t notice the pair of eyes that followed her until the redhead took her seat. She took out her book and opened it, but didn’t read anything on the pages. She just stared at the mass of letters and numbers in front of her, her thoughts somewhere else. It was then she became aware of someone looking at her. Lifting her head, she saw Tara sitting two desks in front and one across from her. The blonde’s head snapped back to her book as soon as Willow looked up. Tilting her head to one side, she fixed her eyes on the back of the other girl. In idea suddenly came to her. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out some paper and a pen. Willow scribbled something down on the paper and folded into the shape of an aeroplane. Praying it would fly to its target, she launched it. It flew straight at the window on the right hand side of the room, hit it and landed on Tara’s desk. Willow smiled triumphantly and lowed her head, but kept her eyes on the blonde.

Tara looked down at the object that had just landed in front of her and frown. She put her pen down and unfolded the paper aeroplane.

“Hi.”

Tara turned her head to look over her shoulder and found Willow looking at her. The redhead smiled hesitantly and Tara turned back to the paper. Just when Willow began to think Tara wasn’t going to write anything back, the paper aeroplane landed on the floor next to her desk. She glanced up at Tara before bending down to pick up the plane. She unfolded it and read the reply.

“Hey.”

Willow smiled at the simple reply and sent the plane back with response. It landed perfectly on Tara’s desk.

“I’m sorry about last night. I didn’t

know it was you in the alley. I didn’t

mean to scare you.”

Tara’s mind drifted back to the night before. She remembered her heart rate increase as she saw Willow standing in front of her. It was only after Willow had dropped the knife did Tara even acknowledge she even had one.

“It’s okay. I shouldn’t be walking

through alleys in the dead of night.

Do you always carry knives

Around with you?”

Willow raised her eyebrow and smiled when she read the question. Obviously she hadn’t scared Tara that much the night before. If she had, she wouldn’t be replying to her notes.

“Only when I’m out alone.

I need something for

Protection.”

The paper aeroplane glided through the air and once again landed gracefully on Tara’s desk. The blonde eagerly opened it up and read the answer to her question. She knew exactly what she was going to put.

“Well, I know who to

To come to if I need

Protecting.”

She sent it back and within seconds it was once more on her desk.

“Willow.”

Tara smiled.

Willow…. Name suits her. It’s pretty.

The blonde snapped out of her thoughts and wrote a reply.

“Tara.”

The teacher at the front of the class stood up and told asked everyone to turn to page 56 in their books and read to page 66 and then sat back down, making it easy for Willow to send the plane to Tara.

“I know. You were the

new girl in my history

class yesterday. Do

you maybe want to

meet up after school

or something? If you’re

not busy.”

Tara’s face broke out in a smile.

Willow’s wants to meet up with me! With me! And she remembers me!

It was at that moment the teacher decided to look up. He caught site of Willow throwing the plane and stood up again.

Teacher: Miss Rosenberg, if you want to play with paper aeroplanes I suggest you go back to elementary school. We do not play with things in MY classroom.

After making himself perfectly clear, he sat back down and continued marking their exams from last week. Willow and Tara smiled at each other and Tara sent the plane back with her answer, just as the bell rang. The students collected their things and began to leave.

“I’d like that. Call me.”

Tara had written her number at the bottom of the page. Willow found herself grinning. She looked up from the note, only to find the classroom empty. Her heart sank as she realised Tara had left, but then looked down at the note and smiled.

She gave me her number.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part 4

Willow threw her bag into the corner and walked into the living room. Her mom was sitting on the sofa watching TV.

Willow: Hi.

Mrs Rosenberg looked up from the TV set and smiled at her daughter.

MsR: Willow, honey. How was school?

Willow: So, so.

Mrs Rosenberg patted the space next to her and Willow moved to sit down next to her mom. She and her mother had always been pretty close, it was only when Willow had started to ‘change’ had things become more intricate between them. Mrs Rosenberg felt her daughter was avoiding her and Willow felt her mother never had any time for her anymore.

MsR: Did something happen?

Willow: Nothing bad. Oh, um, has Faith called or stopped by?

Mrs Rosenberg shook her head.

MsR: She wasn’t in school?

Willow: No. It’s probably nothing. I’ll call her later.

Willow stood up to leave when he mother spoke again.

MsR: Willow…. Are you okay? You seem very distant nowadays.

Willow: I’m fine, mom. Just…. Got things on my mind.

MsR: If you ever need to talk about it-

Willow: I know.

Willow heard the front door slam shut and her father walked into the living room. She turned back to her mother and said goodbye before leaving and heading up to her bedroom.

**********

Willow lay on her bed, holding a piece of paper above her face. It had a row of numbers on it and “Tara” written above them.

Willow: What do I do?

The redhead stared long and hard at the paper, as if waiting for it to give her an answer. It never came. Sighing, she sat up and reached for the phone. She held the receiver to her ear, took a deep breath, and began dialling the number. She felt her confidence rise as she dialled the numbers and smiled. When she got to the last number, she hung up.

**********

Tara glanced towards the phone and sighed. She’d really thought Willow was going to call. Then again, she’d thought all the other were going to call, but they never did. Tara didn’t know why she expected this time to be different. But, if truth were told, she thought Willow was different. She had no reason to. She didn’t even know the redhead. She just had this feeling. Whenever she saw Willow, she had this feeling that the other girl was different to the others. Even if the redhead didn’t know it.

**********

Throwing caution to the wind, Willow picked up the phone for the forth time and dialled in all the number. He heart stopped when she heard Tara answer.

Tara: Hello?

Willow tried to speak, but she couldn’t. She heard Tara speak again and closed her eyes.

Willow: Hi. I-It’s Willow. The uh, the girl from class. With the plane, and the um, notes.

Well, if she didn’t think you were a loser before….

Tara smiled on the other end of the phone. She couldn’t believe Willow had actually taken the time to call. What she didn’t know was that Willow had also spent half an hour staring at the paper with her number on.

Tara: Hi. I, um, I didn’t th-think you were g-going to c-call.

Tara gave herself a mental slap. She couldn’t believe she’d let her stutter slip out. That would be it. She’d here Willow laughing any second and the line would go dead.

Willow: I, uh, I just got in. I would have called sooner….

Tara: I-It’s okay.

She hasn’t hung up yet.

Willow: So um, do you…. I mean, if you’re not busy or anything…. Do you want to meet up?

Why was Willow so nervous around her? This was Willow. Darwin High School’s champion kick boxer. She didn’t get nervous around anyone. Especially not around girls.

Tara bit her bottom lip and smiled.

Tara: I’d l-like that. I mean, s-sure. Yes. That’s fine.

Tara stopped talking before her babbling got out of control.

Willow: I um, I don’t know where you live, so….

Tara: Oh.

Willow: We could meet at Xander’s.

Tara: Xander’s?

Willow: Right, you’re new. It’s a club. Everyone goes there.

Tara: Do you know Lauren Street?

Willow: I live on it, so yeah.

Tara: I’ll m-meet you at the top of the-the road, in…. half an h-hour?

If Willow smiled any more, her face would crack.

Willow: Okay. See you then.

Tara: Yeah.

Willow: Bye.

Tara: Bye.

Willow: Bye… no, wait, I already said that.

She heard Tara giggle on the other end of the phone and suddenly it didn’t matter whether she’d just made herself look stupid or not.

I thought Willow hanging up with only one number left to punch was hilarious...I remember doing stuff like that....certain phone calls can be very nerve racking. :) Excellent job....I love this.

Part 5

As soon as Willow hung up, she rushed over to her wardrobe and pulled out every item of clothing she owned. Picking up a leather skirt and a top, she held them to her body and looked in the mirror. Deciding they didn’t look right, she threw them into the corner. This happened another seven times before Willow suddenly stopped.

What am I doing?! I’m just going out with a friend. Would I do this if I were going out with Faith or Oz? No. So why am I doing this now?

She didn’t have an answer. All she knew was that she wanted to look good tonight.

I want to look good all the time. It has nothing to do with the fact that I’m meeting Tara. Tara!

Willow’s head spun around to look at the clock on her wall. She had to find something to wear, and quickly.

**********

Tara pulled her jacket tighter around her body and rubbed her arms vigorously. It was pretty cold. Her body shook all over, but not because she was cold. It was because she was nervous.

Why am I acting like this? I shouldn’t be nervous. I’m meeting up with a girl from school, that’s all. There’s no need for me to be feeling….

Tara’s thoughts trailed off and she stopped dead in her tracks. She’d been so lost in her thoughts she hadn’t realised how close she had gotten to Lauren Street. Willow was no less than ten paces in front of her, wearing black leather trousers, a dark red tank top and a leather jacket over her top. Her black highlights went perfectly with the outfit. It took Tara a second or two to realise her mouth was hanging open and she was staring. She shook herself and walked towards Willow.

The redhead folded her arms and smiled as she approached the other girl. Tara was dressed in a pair of blue jeans, a pale blue jumper and a long red leather coat over that. Willow felt her heart beat increase as she got closer and begged herself to calm down. They stopped in front of each other and smiled nervously.

Willow: Hey.

Tara: Hi.

Willow: I um, I’m not sure where you want to….

Tara: As long a-as it’s s-some place warm, I don’t m-mind.

Willow: Well, I could take you to that place I told you about.

Tara: Xander’s?

Willow nodded.

Tara: Um…. Okay. Sure.

Willow: Well, lets go then.

The redhead smiled at Tara and they began walking again, side by side.

**********

By the time they’d reached Main Street, the girls had talked about everything from school to the weather, and it was safe to say they felt a lot calmer. Willow was telling Tara about Faith and Oz when she suddenly stopped and squealed.

Willow: Ice cream!

Grabbing hold of Tara’s sleeve, she dragged the blonde towards the ice cream van. Tara giggled at Willow’s enthusiasm and let herself be pulled away.

Willow: What do you want?

Tara: Ch-chocolate.

Willow: I’m a strawberry kinda gal myself.

Tara found herself smiling again and Willow handed the blonde her ice cream. They started walking again, enjoying their ice cream and each other’s company.

Willow: Where was I?

Tara: Um, you were talking a-about your friend. F-Faith.

Willow: Oh right. Well, Faith and me have been best friends since we were six.

Willow giggled.

Willow: An older guy was picking on me in the playground and Faith stepped in. They guy never bothered me again and we’ve been best buds ever since. We do everything together. Gossip, shop, beat up guys….

Tara: Double date?

Willow: We’re yet to do that. She hasn’t found the right girl and I haven’t-

Tara: Girl?

Willow: Oh…. Yeah, she um, Faith’s gay.

Tara: Oh.

They finished off their ice cream in silence. A strange tension hung between them as they walk. As they rounded a corner, Willow pointed towards a large building in front of them.

Willow: That’s Xander’s.

Tara: It’s b-big.

Tara watched as she saw dozens of people walked in through the doors.

Tara: And um, busy.

Willow: It’s Xander’s. It’s always busy. It’s like the only club we have around here, they let any one in, but it’s still the place to be.

Willow glanced toward Tara and noticed the other girl’s uneasiness as she watched all the people flock to the club. Tucking a strand of long copper hair behind her ear, Willow made a decision. She took hold of Tara’s hand and pulled her into a nearby alleyway, much to the other girl’s confusion.

Tara: W-Willow, where are w-we-

Willow: Change of plan.

Tara: B-but I thought you w-wanted to go t-to the club.

Willow: I saw the way you were looking at all the people going in there. You don’t like crowds, do you?

Tara: I’m n-not their b-biggest fan.

Willow stopped walking and turned to look at Tara, still holding the other girl’s hand. She frowned and tilted her head to look at the girl in front of her.

Willow: You know…. You’re different to everyone else.

Tara smiled shyly and dropped her head. Willow smirked and turned around again.

Willow: Common, I want to show you something.

As Willow tried to walk off again, Tara tugged on the redhead’s hand and turned Willow back to face her. They looked at each other for a long moment. The crooked grin on the blonde’s face made Willow’s heart beat faster. Tara felt the shorter girl’s grip on her hand tighten and the redhead smiled. Before she realised what she was doing, Willow slowly began to lean towards Tara. It was as if the next few seconds passed in slow motion. Instinctively, Tara closed her eyes. She knew what was coming, and for some reason, she didn’t try to pull away. As Willow got closer, her mind began to spin. What was she doing?

Willow was so close to her now, she could feel the redhead’s breath on her lips. Then suddenly, she couldn’t. She opened her eyes and looked at Willow. Without another word, Willow turned around and began walking again. Tara tugged on her bottom lip with her teeth and followed her. Thinking about what had just happened, or could have happened between them.
