Title: Living in Shadows

Author: Puff

Feedback: This is my first and only attempt at a long story so if it sucks sorry. Please send comments etc to puff614@hotmail.com

Summary: Dark Tara centric story. Willow does appear but I am warning you there will be some badness. This is AU as well. That stands for my reality.

Spoiler Warning: None at all.

Disclaimer: I didn't create these characters. I do, however, love them. I'm not making any money off of them though.

Rating: R – G This part is a PG-13 I think.

Notes: Thanks to my wonderful beta reader Drakkenfyre who has made it possible for me to update daily. And love as always to spuckie. It's lighter than the last part but still not pleasant.

Part 13

“Hi.” Tara clutched her towel around her tighter as she took in Willow’s wide-eyed gaze.

She had decided to go and take a shower and opened the door only to find herself almost running into the redhead. “Um… Would you like to come in?” she offered pushing the door open a bit wider with her foot and taking a step back. Tara noticed they were starting to draw a crowd in the hall and might very well be the topic of conversation in the dorm for today.

Willow stepped forwards and Tara turned and closed the door behind them. Catching the towel deftly as it slipped from her shoulders and then clutching it to her again.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, you were just going to go and shower right? I could come back later?” Willow suggested her eyes still wide like saucers.

‘Was she even blinking?’ Tara wondered. She sure was looking over her rather openly. Although Tara wasn’t quite sure what the look in those green eyes could be described as. That was until they opened even wider, then that look could not be misinterpreted, it was pity.

Tara’s head dropped down and she took a step back as Willow stepped towards her.

“That’s some bruise you have there.” Willow said softly.

“I fell.” The lie was automatic and Tara hated herself immediately for using it. But the redhead didn’t let her off so easily by actually accepting this like so many others had in the past.

“How many times?” She asked.

Tara chuckled and looked up, seeing the serious look on Willow’s face she let her head drop again, the blonde hair creating a curtain that blocked her face from the redheads.

“What happened Tara?” The voice was so quiet and soft that Tara almost didn’t hear it. Maybe she could pretend she didn’t? “Please. Who hurt you?” Willow continued to ask letting her voice increase in volume slightly, although it lost none of its softness.

“I’m alright now.” Tara said instead of answering the question.

“Tara. Please. I want to help.” Willow said, her voice sounded so sad and hurt that Tara found herself looking up once more. Willow had tears running silently down her face and was so close now that Tara could hear her breathe. Reaching up, she slowly wiped away the tears letting her fingers trace the lines of Willow’s face for just a fraction longer than was really necessary before falling back to her side.

“You are helping Willow. I want to tell you what happened to me, I really do. But I am not sure I’m strong enough to yet, it’s still too painful and fresh in my mind.” She searched for the right words and then continued. “Remember last night when you said you wanted to share things with me?” Willow nodded “Then you understand how much I want to tell you this, but please not now.” Tara searched Willow’s face for understanding and saw that she had it.

“But you are alright now?” Willow asked a look of worry crossing her face.

Tara nodded and found she was reaching for Willow’s hand. She held it in between hers “Yes, now I am alright.”

That was a lovely moment between the girls. Willow concerned, Tara reassuring. This is good.

I've been hoping for a fic that addresses how Tara (and Willow) deals with her abuse by her family. Before she met Willow, it was a huge part of Tara's self-image. Seeing her recovery and growth is one of the key things I love about this character. Seeing how Willow and Tara face it together is something I've been wanting to see for a long time.

I am also an incorrigible fan of angst - provided there's a happy ending, of course. You've managed to capture that as well.

Thanks for tackling such a difficult subject with such compassion and love. I look forward to your next update.

Yeee i am so glad that Tara has Willow now, so she can help her get past all the badness of her past.

It's great to see how they react to eachother, can't wait to see how things will progress between them.

Can't wait for more.

Oh, that was sweet. Only about five more chapters to go, huh? Glad I found this when I did then. :)

I love how at ease they are with each other even though they just met. They have such a tight bond right from the start. Beautiful!

Looking forward to more!

Poor Tara, her life has gotten better, but she is still tormented by her past via the dreams. The detail her father put into the story of the demon makes me hate him more. As if her Mother's death hadn't been trauma enough.

I love how Willow and Tara keep reaching out to hold hands, as if its the most natural thing in the world, and I suppose it is!

I'm finding it nice that Tara is waiting to tell Willow certain things. That might partly be because...well, she's in a towel and is feeling bad, but it also seems that it's acknowledgment of the coming intimacy between them. Like they're both being careful with this thing that they've discovered between them. Very sweet. And nice to have the question of this abuse out in the open from the very beginning, so Willow knows about it.

Part 14

Orientation week was over far too soon for Tara. She had enjoyed spending almost the entire week with Willow. They would meet in the cafeteria for breakfast and decide what they would then do that day. Sometimes they would take a walk and Willow would show Tara any of the “sights” of Sunnydale such as the Bronze and the Magic Box, their hands would always find a way into each others. During this time, they would think nothing of walking along with them entwined. Both girls valued the contact too much to let go ever.

Sometimes they would just lie in Tara’s room talking and telling small stories. Tara even fell asleep one day and woke up to find Willow watching her. She was embarrassed at first but the redhead had given her a look of such tenderness that Tara just found herself staring back at Willow. They were just mere inches apart. The moment was, of course, broken in some way…normally by Buffy. Who this time called and invited them to the beach with some of the other ‘Scooby gang’ members.

Tara wasn’t sure what to make of the group. They seemed just like regular people until you realised they stayed up nights to keep the world safe for everyone. That and that fact that Buffy’s little sister was apparently a ball of energy. Of course she also got to meet her first demon, or ex-demon. Although Anya wasn’t exactly what Tara would have pictured as a demon at all. She actually rather liked her by then end of their brief time together.

The beach trip mainly stuck in Tara’s mind because her and Willow had shared a towel on the beach and lay close together on it all day. It seemed to Tara as though they found any excuse to touch each other at the moment and sometimes Tara was frightened by her feelings for the redhead. She was almost sure everyone could tell what she was thinking by the look on her face. The scoobies however seemed oblivious to everything.

‘Not that there is anything going on between Willow and I,’ Tara reminded herself. She sighed, her life was slowly starting to form and Willow played a huge part in making all of it happen. Still she had things to tell Willow, important things that needed to be said. Maybe tonight when Willow came to her room she would be able to say some of the things on her heart at the moment. Sometimes you had to take a chance; Tara knew this as well as anyone. She had gotten to this point in her life so far purely on taking chances.

Maybe it was time to take one more.

Ok here's the replies to the feedback for part 13

MadeinNZ

Thanks I am glad you enjoyed it :) I love the way they are always there for each other.

Drakkenfyre

LOL Dragon dance of happiness? There's a dance? :D

Muttley

Larger is a wonderful ice breaker ;) I am very gald that you are enjoying the story and hope that you continue to do so. Getting response from people that don't post very often is very nice as I know it takes a lot of guts to do it. But don't be scared I won't bite :)

Steph

Future angsty updates will have a disclaimer just for you :) I'm Glad you like the story.

Caoilin

Thank you so much for those kind words, I hope that the ending of this fic has answered a few questions, it was always a shame that they never went into Tara's past very much on the show...she came such a long way.

TareBearRS

I'm glad Tara has Willow as well, they are meant for each other. I'm glad you are enjoying the story :)

Thanatopsis

It's a huge step for Tara to accept help, Willow is there now to help her throught things as well. Nice to see you are still reading the story and thanks for posting :)

Sweets :D

Ah thanks. How's it going?

Scout

Yes the story ends at chpater 18, although I have a sequel in my head if people are interested in reading it I will write it. I am glad you are enjoying the story and I hope you like the last few parts :)

Mollyig

Sorry if I traumatised you. I wanted to write a way that gave Tara even extra guilt over her mother. I agree with what you said Willow and Tara's attraction to each other is just natural.

Tulipp

Thank you I like the insightful comments you make, I didn't think it would be right for Tara to tell Willow everything. But there will be a time when she will want to tell her eventually. i hope you are enjoying the story.

FaithWL

*waves* Tara in a towel mmmm was the update about anything else after that? ;) Glad to see you are so enthusiastic about the story.

I'll do replies for any feedback to part 14 tomorrow, thanks for still reading :)

Part 15

The first day of classes had gone well. It had actually been just a case of attending the class; collecting a sheet that said what the course was about, what books were required and then making sure your name was actually on the lecturers’ sheet. Tara decided to get her textbooks at the campus bookstore. She was stunned to see that many people crowded in such a tiny space. ‘Oh well at least I have 2 hours before Willow comes over. That should be enough time.’ She entered the shop and began to search among the shelves for any of the titles on her lists.

An hour later Tara finally exited the store. Her arms already ached from carrying the books around and if another person ran into her body she was likely to drop the books on their feet. She made a mental note to avoid the bookstore on the first day of classes in future and began to wearily walk back to her dorm.

Halfway back to her room she felt it. Willow. She was near. Tara looked up from the gravel path she was following and quickly spotted the redhead walking towards her. Not able to control the smile that sprang to her lips whenever the redhead was around she found she was grinning. Seeing Willow always made her feel like everything in her life was perfect. Nothing could be wrong if Willow was around. It sounded silly but she felt lighter somehow, as though all of the worries on her mind or in her heart were no longer pulling her down.

Tara watched Willow speed up her pace and walk towards her. Her eyes wandered over Willow’s body before practically having to force herself to look at the redheads face.

“Hi Willow.” She smiled softly and ducked her head in greeting.

“Hey, can I help you carry those?” Willow asked. Immediately reaching for some of the books in Tara’s arms, her hands brushing the blondes arms before collecting three of the large books and settling them into her own arms. “How were your classes?” Willow asked as they set off towards the direction of Tara’s room.

“They were good, hopefully they’ll be interesting. How were yours?” She asked sneaking a sideways look at the redhead. She watched Willow’s brow crinkle and smiled at her concentration. ‘She’s just so adorable.’

“They were awful,” Willow blurted out a blush coloring her face. Tara stopped and stared at Willow waiting for an explanation. “…I missed you.”

Tara smiled and shifted her books into one arm, reaching out to touch the redhead with her free arm, she let her hand run up and down Willow’s arm luxuriating in the touch of the other girl.

“I missed you too.” She said.

“Really?” Willow asked uncertainty creeping into her voice.

Tara wasn’t sure what to do. She knew what she wanted to do but what if now wasn’t the time? She’d thought about this often and it had to be the right time. Didn’t it? But Willow needed reassuring and Tara felt at that moment that she could be sure enough for both of them.

Slowly, she turned Willow to face her. Not caring when she heard the books fall and bounce on the gravel. Only really caring about one thing at this moment in time and that was standing right in front of her.

Tara gently tilted Willow’s face up so she could look into those green eyes that she was growing to love so much.

“I missed you Willow.” She said trying to convey with her eyes and her voice just how sincere she was “I miss you whenever you’re not with me. Even if it’s just for a second.” The emotions that were playing across Willow’s face gave her hope and she continued, praying that her voice would hold out. “I know that I haven’t told you much about me and I know you said you’d wait. Willow I want to tell you. Everything.” She paused to let the words sink in and was overcome by emotion when she saw understanding light up the green eyes. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you and well I want to make it up to you. Starting right now. Is that ok?”

“Oh yes.” Willow sighed, her hands encircled Tara’s waist and pulled her closer until they were inches apart. “You did mean like this didn’t you?” Willow asked softly and gasped when she felt Tara’s arms close around her waist until they were holding each other.

The embrace felt perfect. Like nothing in her life had been right up until this moment.

Tara smiled ‘This is how every moment should be.’

Yeah, I thought for a second we might get a smoochie there. Probably soon.

Reading about Tara's bookstore adventures reminded me too much of mine. I'll never understand why big university bookstores have tiny aisles and cashier areas. It's always a madhouse at the beginning of the semester. Buy online! ;)
