Hey Union,

Back from vacation and doing checkbook/laundry etc. Caught up now and loved this. Not just the kiss but more importantly the talking. They connect so well. Great job. Debra

Not Dead

Postby unionjill30 » Mon Jul 14, 2003 9:35 pm

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm still alive and stuff and working on updates. I have the next one done and beta'd but I'm all tired and have been lazy with revising it. I'll do the reply thing tomorrow most likely because I'm ultra-tired again tonight. I worked almost 56 hours last week, and I'll probably work close to that this week. It's almost over, and I can't wait. Thanks to everyone who's still reading and waiting for an update.

Hey UnionJill!

Just wanted to say, that I love this fic.

The conversation in the last update was really great. Our girls getting to know each other and getting closer is always the best part.

And I so hope, that when they wake up, it will not be all awkward and avoidy.....

Re: Replies

Big oops on my part. I said I'd do replies last night but my hour long nap at 5pm sort of turned into a nine and half hour long nap. My bad. Fortunately I actually woke up and didn't sleep through work. That would have been really bad. I did have time for the replies this morning though; it's just that it's not even 4am yet so who's going to be here to read them? Anyway, I talk to much, so here are the replies...

reyjawk – Glad you like this AU. The update shouldn’t be too far away, so you shouldn’t have to keep a lookout much longer.

allykat – Update should be soonish. I’m just really tired and lazy otherwise it would have been posted already.

Brooke – Great to hear you liked that little twist with Oz. I love the whole coincidence factor, and I agree with you on the “what if they’d met sooner…” thing. It always keeps you wondering.

nika – I’m happy you liked this date. Hopefully you’ll like the next one and the next one and… Okay I’ll stop now and just trust you get my point that there are more fun dates to come.

TemperedCynic – Yes, it’s never a good idea to say, “I’ll have what you’re having.” Too many things can go wrong. Of course I’m stupid and always say it. Obviously I’ve got some stories. I’m glad you appreciate the humor I threw in. Nothing beats a little Celebrity Jeopardy parody. Good times. Not many people get it. The next morning should be slightly interesting, though don’t predict too much… you never really know what’s going to happen. Trust me.

peebrain – Gradual is good, though I hope I don’t take it too slowly. I’m not sure that original piece is ever going to see the light of day. First, it was nowhere near as long as this. Second, I’m not sure which disk it’s on as I never was one to label things. And third, I’m self-critical and always hate my work, so it’s a rare day when I let people read my stuff. Posting this is helping me get over it. As for my music selections, I’m doubting I’ll be featuring those bands due to the fact that I’m mainly only featuring songs from albums I own. There are those that happen to slide in from albums I don’t own as of yet, but so far I haven’t thought of many outside my own collection.

sailor80 – Sweet like a summer romance, yes. Summer romance, no. This one’s gonna last. I can feel it ;) .

Stroke of Luck – No worries on getting drunk causing too many problems. Nothing that can’t be fixed. The next part will be soon so you shouldn’t have to wait much more.

xita – You’re welcome for the long update. I hoped it would hold people over for a little while longer. I’m glad you like the pacing, and yes, the alcohol kind of rushed things which can always be interesting. I’m not big into the drinking for exactly that reason. Too many consequences. Tara and Willow have a few of those to think about. Yeah, gay Oz. That one is a really funny thought. I personally don’t see him as having any gay leanings, but it’s it was one of those “you know what would be funny?” moments. Plus, it added some back story. The plan is to bring that up at a later date so we can explore just how Oz feels about this whole situation because I’m sure you’re not the only one who was curious.

littlecrazy80 – LOL. You wouldn’t regret your actions? Well, maybe Tara does and maybe she doesn’t. How vague am I?

sam darls – Hey, you’re welcome. I’m glad you liked it.

When You Were Mine – Good to hear you liked the update and glad to know the kiss was good as well. Also good to hear you enjoyed the movie selection. Umm… have fun at that Stampede thing cause I have no idea what you’re talking about :) .

JustSkipIt – Yay for enjoying the talking over the kissing. You’re my kind of person. Kissing is always good, but if the talking is lacking there’s nothing to build a relationship on. Does that make me sound all old or something? I hope it doesn’t. Hope that vacation was fun.

Insanity – Of course we’ll have to wait and see if it’s avoidy in the morning, but I’m glad you liked the night before with the talking and getting to know each other. Like previously mentioned to someone, I agree that it’s the best part.

Hopefully I won't nap too long tonight and I'll finally get that update done that I keep talking about.

Track 8: I’m Not Drunk by Judy & The Loadies

Tara was half-conscious as she dreamt about Mario and Luigi deploying Galaga aliens to defeat Donkey Kong. It was incredibly insane, but she tried to hold on to the dream just to see where else it might lead. Just as Donkey Kong was forming an alliance with the Paper Boy and Q-bert, the dream began to fade, and she started to climb into full consciousness. She smiled to herself , curious to figure out the source of her Nintendo Land dreamscape.

With her eyes still closed, Tara tightened her arms around the pillow she was holding and nuzzled her head into the one it was resting on. She noticed the padding strangely wasn’t as fluffy as usual but decided not to worry about it. Suddenly she heard a small sigh that obviously hadn’t come from herself, and something lightly brushed her arm. Cautiously she peeked one eye open to investigate and was greeted with the sight of another body snuggled very closely with her own. Both of Tara’s eyes were instantly wide open in search of who was in bed with her. Making out first red hair then a face, she knew who it was. Willow.

Seeing she was still asleep, Tara started to gently extract herself from the embrace as she began going over what had happened the night before. Okay, we came home, she helped me up here, we fell, we kissed…Oh god, I kissed her. She started to panic at her out of character move. Once off the bed, she looked at the clock, which read just before five o’clock, before looking back at the sleeping woman. All right, she’s dressed. I’m dressed. Nothing else happened. But I would remember if anything else happened. Not sure of what to do, Tara walked out of the room and into the bathroom across the hall.

In the bathroom, Tara just looked at herself in the mirror for a moment. Her hair was disheveled and she realized her mouth felt disgusting. She straightened the mess of hair before tackling her teeth with a toothbrush. As she rinsed her mouth she suddenly had to fight the urge to vomit in the sink. Once she got her stomach under control, she crept back into the bedroom for more comfortable clothes to change into. She also grabbed a blanket and placed it over the sleeping woman. Leaving the room again, she closed the door as to not disturb Willow.

After changing into a t-shirt under a hooded sweatshirt and a pair of cotton pajama pants, Tara rounded the corner in the hallway and went into the kitchen. She grabbed a glass of ice water and a package of saltine crackers for her stomach before going downstairs to lay on the couch and watch cartoons. She curled up under a blanket and turned on the television. Scrolling through the channels she landed on Nickelodeon where Tiny Toon Adventures was just starting. After nibbling on a few crackers her stomach began to feel better and she took a drink of the water before snuggling into the couch to watch the TV. Halfway into the show, Tara had fallen asleep again.

As Willow began to wake up she tightened the blanket around her body and noticed something was wrong. Her normally fuzzy blanket had a slightly different texture. She pulled her eyes open to see what was going on. Not only did the blanket feel off, but it was the wrong color as well. Confused, Willow looked around and saw that the entire room was incorrect. Panicking for a second, she finally realized that she had been sleeping in Tara’s bed and began to relax. Another moment later she was panicking again. Tara’s bed?! We didn’t…?

Willow lifted the blanket and saw she was still wearing the clothes from the previous night. Of course you didn’t, stupid. You just met her, and it’s not like you’d forget if something like that happened.

She started to relax once more then remembered the night before. She kissed me, she thought, smiling to herself. Rolling over onto her left side, Willow saw Tara wasn’t in bed anymore. Looking at the clock she saw that it was a little after nine o’clock. She decided to get up and find Tara.

Willow crept out into the hallway and looked around unsure of where to go. She could turn right and go towards the staircase, or she could move forward and go into what looked like a kitchen. She settled on checking upstairs first, but didn’t find the blonde. When she made it downstairs, she found Tara asleep on the couch with SpongeBob SquarePants playing on the television. Not sure whether to wake the other woman or not, Willow sat down in the armchair to watch TV and wait.

The episode was one Willow had seen before, but she chose to watch it again because it was cute and funny. Plankton had switched lives with Mr. Krabs, and Willow was trying not to giggle out loud. She was successful until Mr. Krabs came flying in wearing nothing but a bra. She covered her mouth to cover the noise but a few sniggers escaped.

Tara woke up hearing first laughing then the television. She opened her eyes and saw Willow sitting in a chair with her eyes on the TV.

Willow glanced over to the couch to see if she’d woken Tara or not. The blonde was looking back at her with a small grin on her face.

“Am I missing something funny?” Tara asked.

“Mr. Krabs in a bra,” Willow said with a smile and pointed at the screen.

“Oh, I love that episode.” Tara smiled as she started to sit up.

“Me too,” the redhead said.

The blonde pulled the blanket off of herself and began to fold it. “Did you sleep okay?” she asked.

“Pretty well,” Willow answered. “Though I have to say, skirts aren’t exactly the best in sleep attire.”

“I wouldn’t think so,” Tara said with a grin. They sat smiling at each other for a moment before she continued. “Do you want breakfast or anything? I can cook whatever you like.”

Willow thought for a moment. She wanted to stick around with the blonde for a while longer, but the need for a shower and a change of clothes was fairly strong. “Food sounds really great, but I think I should probably head home and get out of these clothes.”

“Okay. Let me put on some shoes and I can drive you home,” Tara said, trying not to sound disappointed.

After Willow gathered her belongings and Tara found a pair of sandals, the two got into the car and headed towards the redhead’s home. The drive was fairly quiet, as neither knew exactly what to say. Both were thinking of the kiss and wanted to talk about it. Tara wanted to apologize for what she considered a stupid move. Of course she had enjoyed the kiss, but she felt it was too bold a step and worried it would ruin the process of getting to know each other. Willow wanted to ask what the kiss meant for the two of them. She was unsure if there was now something between them or if it was all an accident from lack of inhibition. From the way Tara wasn’t talking about it, Willow was heavily considering the option of the blonde not even remembering the incident.

Willow pointed to the entrance of the funeral home and Tara turned into it. Pulling up beside the delivery door, the redhead directed the other woman to stop.

“You live in a funeral home?” Tara asked in surprise as she looked out the windshield at the beautiful building.

“Yep. Buffy’s a funeral director here and the three of us live upstairs,” Willow explained.

“That’s really neat,” Tara said with a grin as she turned toward the redhead.

Willow smiled. No one had ever told her it was neat that she lived in a funeral home. “I’ll have to have Buffy give you the tour sometime.”

“That’d be fun,” the blonde smiled back.

“So… I should go,” Willow said, suddenly unsure of herself for some reason.

“Yeah...” Tara trailed off.

The two women sat motionless for a moment without saying anything. At the same moment both started to speak. “I’m sorry about last night,” they said in unison before giggling nervously.

“You first,” Willow said.

“No, that’s okay. You first,” Tara argued.

“I totally insist. What were you going to say?” the redhead pushed.

“Umm...” Tara wasn’t sure what to say. It took a second to gather her thoughts. “I just want to tell you I’m sorry for getting all aggressive and kissing you last night. I’m not sure what came over me, but I’m not normally so forward like that,” she tried to explain.

“No! Don’t blame yourself,” Willow said. “If I had half a brain I would have used it and not let you get all drunk. It was my bad, and I’m sorry.”

“You can’t take all the blame. It was a duel effort,” the blonde reasoned.

“Okay, so how’s this,” Willow started. “We agree that we kissed each other last night, and it was a mistake that we both take the blame for.” Realizing her words might be taken the wrong way, the redhead started to backpedal. “Not that it was a bad mistake, mind you. Because, hey, I was totally enjoying myself. It was an amazing kiss.”

Tara felt herself blush as Willow continued.

“And I probably wouldn’t object to it happening again. Except maybe under better circumstances. Because then we wouldn’t be all worried that it was a bad thing afterward.” Willow was silenced by a finger pressed to her lips.

“I get what you’re saying,” Tara said with a shy smile as she slowly removed her finger from the redhead’s lips. “And I agree with you. Especially the part about it being amazing.” Her own words made Tara blush again.

“We’re agreed then,” Willow reiterated.

“Yeah.”

“So I should probably go for real this time,” Willow said even though she made no movement to exit the vehicle.

“Yeah,” Tara said once more.

“Okay.” Willow hadn’t moved.

“Oh! Hang on,” Tara said suddenly, causing the redhead to jump slightly. She began looking in the front console for a pen and something to write on. She found a marker and an old ticket stub from a parking garage and scribbled her phone numbers on the blank side before handing it to the redhead. “That’s my home number and my cell phone number. Feel free to call anytime.”

Willow took the piece of paper and started going through her purse. She located a pen and a piece of paper and wrote her numbers down for the blonde as well. “We should get together again soon,” she said.

“Yeah. Soon.” Tara smiled.

Unsure of what to do, the two women went back to sitting motionless. A moment later they began to slowly to lean across the console between their seats and eventually ended up in a hug. It was a simple warm, friendly hug, but it sent jolts of electricity through them both.

After breaking apart, Willow finally opened the door and climbed out of the vehicle. “Bye,” she said with a small wave.

“Bye,” Tara returned with a wave of her own.

Willow unlocked the delivery entrance and stepped inside the building. After closing the door behind her, she leaned against it and let out the breath she’d been holding since she began walking from the car. “Wow,” she said out loud just as Walter, the owner of the home walked past. He gave her an odd look and she managed to squeak out a, “Hi.”

“Hello,” he said in his extremely deep voice before continuing to walk to the stairs that lead to the basement.

As he disappeared down the stairs Willow sprinted up the steps to the second level. Walter had always frightened her for some reason. Maybe it was the fact that he looked and acted very similarly to Lurch from The Addams Family. She wasn’t sure, but she never liked to be caught alone around the older man.

In the kitchen, Willow found Liam sitting on a stool at the island reading the newspaper. “Hey,” she said, wearing a large grin, as she put down her purse and walked to the coffee pot to pour a cup.

“Hey,” he said, looking up from the paper. “You just getting in?”

“Yeah. I stayed at Tara’s last night. Is Buffy around?” She wanted to talk to her best friend about the previous night.

“She’s out on a body run. I’m not sure when she’ll be back.”

“I forgot she was on-call this morning,” Willow said as she took a seat next to Liam with her cup of coffee. As she took a sip from the mug she visibly shuddered and almost gagged.

Liam tried not to laugh as he pushed a bowl of sugar toward the redhead along with a small container of cream. “Sorry I didn’t warn you.”

“Since when do you make coffee so strong it could walk,” Willow asked with a few coughs.

“That would be Buffy’s doing. I think it’s her way of saying that if she can’t enjoy a cup of coffee while she’s pregnant then no one else can either,” he grinned.

“How very nice of her.” Willow’s voice was thick with sarcasm. “I’m going to introduce that to the drain and make a new pot.”

“Works for me,” Liam said. “Did you have a good time last night?” he asked as Willow poured Buffy’s coffee from Hell into the sink.

“Maybe,” Willow said slyly as she started making a new pot of coffee.

“And that translates as?” Liam questioned.

“Well, I’d say it translates into yes I had a good time. Want me to tell you about it?” the redhead asked as she sat back down next to Liam and put her head on his shoulder.

“Why do I have the feeling I’m suddenly going to get roped into girl talk? Isn’t this Buffy’s territory?” he asked slightly unsure whether to say yes or no. He had always avoided the girly conversations

With her head still resting on his shoulder, Willow looked up at Liam with bright eyes. “As Buffy’s husband you’re automatically signed up for girl talk sessions when she’s not around. And as an extra added bonus, after you listen to me tell you about my night, you can tell me all about your night and how it apparently required turning the volume of the telephone ring to off.” Seeing the blush that crept up on Liam’s face, Willow laughed. “Ha, I had a feeling that’s why you guys didn’t answer last night.”

“Always the intuitive one,” Liam said as he wrapped his arm around his wife’s best friend. “Okay, we’ll do the sharing bit, but I swear if this leads to facials and manicures I’m out of here.”

“I’m twenty-three not twelve, you big goof. I promise nothing of the make-over variety,” the redhead agreed to his stipulation. “But I’m telling you, a little wax and we could have those eyebrows looking mighty pretty,” she added as a joke.

“Don’t even think about it,” Liam said. “Now tell me all about your night. I’m all ears.”

Willow smiled and began telling him everything that went on the night before and concluded by saying, “And she gave me her phone number,” as she showed him the ticket stub.

“Wow. Sounds like you had quite a night. Now I can see why you’re so glowy,” Liam said.

“I’m not glowy,” Willow said with a playful shove to Liam’s shoulder. “Am I?”

“Completely.”

“Well I have a good reason to be.”

“So are you going to call her?” Liam asked.

“Right now?” Willow shouted incredulously. “Wouldn’t that look extremely desperate?”

“I didn’t mean this very second. I meant today or tomorrow. Soon,” he explained, laughing slightly at the redhead.

“Oh. Well why didn’t you say that? Of course I’m going to call her. Today probably. Hopefully.” Willow began to look nervous. “What do I say when I call her?” She looked at Liam with wide eyes.

“Generally a ‘Hey, Tara. I had a great time. Let’s get together for dinner or something,’ would suffice,” he said.

“And that’ll work?” the redhead asked.

Liam smiled. “Of course.”

“So I should ask her to dinner?”

“Yep. Tuesday. Here. Buffy and I will clear out,” he told her.

Willow laughed at his plans. “And what should I cook, oh great date guru.”

“I’m envisioning some sort of food. Something edible,” Liam joked.

“I think I can handle that,” Willow said.

“Handle what?” Buffy’s voice came from the entryway to the kitchen.

“Hey! You’re home.” Willow said, turning to face her friend.

“Which isn’t where you were when I left this morning,” Buffy said. “I take it last night went well?”

“Very well. C’mon, I have loads to tell you,” the redhead said excitedly as she grabbed her best friend’s hand and began pulling her towards the direction of the stairs.

“Ooh, I get to find out why you’re all glowy,” Buffy said as she let herself be pulled from the kitchen.

“Told you!” Liam shouted from his seat to Willow causing her to laugh.

After dropping Willow off, Tara decided to stop by Kim’s apartment to talk to her about the previous night. She knocked for a moment before Jeremy answered the door.

“Hey, Tara. Come in. Kim hasn’t woken up yet,” he said, moving aside so the blonde could enter the apartment. “So what are you up to today?” he asked after closing the door.

“Not a whole lot. I just came by to see what Kim was up to,” Tara told him as they walked over and sat on the couch. “Are you working today?”

“Yeah. You should stop by sometime this afternoon. This guy ordered a five string Fender Custom Classic Jazz Bass and it’s sweet. He’s not supposed to be in until tomorrow to pick it up. I think you’d really like it,” Jeremy said.

“What color?” Tara asked, somewhat intrigued.

“Ice blue metallic body with a white pearloid pick guard. It’s gorgeous.”

“Sounds like it,” Tara agreed. “Oh, speaking of the shop, I need to come in there sometime anyway. There’s this overdrive pedal I was looking into and wanted to check out my options.”

“I thought I heard voices,” a bleary-eyed Kim said from the bedroom door. “Hey, Tara.”

“Hey, sleepy-head,” Tara said.

“Well, that’s my cue to head out. I have to stop by my place before I go to work,” Jeremy said as he stood up from his seat on the couch. He walked over and gave Kim a quick kiss before making his way to the door. “Bye, hon. Bye, Tara. We’ll talk about that pedal later.”

“Bye, sweetie,” Kim said with a small wave.

“Bye, Jeremy. I’ll be in sometime later today,” Tara said as Jeremy nodded and walked out the door.

“So, what are you doing out this morning? I thought Saturday mornings were quality alone time moments,” Kim asked curiously.

“I was just taking Willow home and thought I’d drop by,” Tara said, trying to sound casual.

“Don’t tell me she wakes up at the crack of dawn too and you both went out this morning,” Kim sighed. She liked to sleep in extremely late and never understood how or why Tara got up as early as she did nearly every day.

“No, actually, I slept in until nine today. I’m not sure exactly what time she got up,” Tara said, unsure of how to start explaining what all had went on.

“Well then why were you taking her… Oh,” Kim said with sudden realization. “She stayed at your house last night, didn’t she.”

“Yes,” Tara said, blushing.

“Way to go Tara! You finally got some!” Kim shouted her congratulations.

“Whoa, hold up! You think I… that we…? No way, I only kissed her!” Tara was almost appalled that Kim would think she had slept with Willow. “What kind of person do you think I am? I only met her not that long ago.”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to assume,” Kim said with her hands up in a surrendering fashion. “I just figured. I mean, you said she stayed with you last night. Why else would she stay there?”

“I wasn’t exactly in any condition to drive her home,” Tara explained.

“What does that mean?” Kim asked.

“We went to The Bronze and I might have gotten a little drunk,” Tara said almost shamefully.

Kim looked shocked. “But you haven’t done that since...”

“I know,” Tara interrupted. “But it was an accident. I didn’t tell her I don’t really drink and I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. But it’s fine. Nothing happened. I just couldn’t walk straight. That’s all.”

“You said you kissed her,” Kim realized. “Was that before or after you’d been drinking?”

“After,” Tara said.

“And was she drunk as well?” Kim asked. She was trying to piece together the puzzle.

“She only drank a little bit, so she was pretty sober,” the blonde explained.

Kim looked dumbfounded for a moment. Never in a million years would she expect a story like this from Tara. It was hard to comprehend. “Well you’ve thrown me for a loop. So you were drunk and you kissed her. Did she kiss you back?”

Tara let out an almost dreamy sigh. “Yes.”

Kim couldn’t help but smile. “It was that good, huh?”

“You have no idea, Kim. It was the most incredible kiss of my life,” Tara said with a glazed over look on her face.

“Even though I’m still so confused and you have so much more to tell me, I will say congratulations and I’m happy for you,” Kim said. “So when are you two going out again?”

“I’m not sure,” Tara said. “I gave her my number and she gave me hers. I thought I’d give it some time before I call her so I can think of what to say. I’m either going to call her tonight or early tomorrow.

“So tell me what all happened,” Kim prodded. “That way I can call the nuns and tell them you won’t be joining up after all,” she teased.

Tara gave her friend a playful shove as they both began laughing. She didn’t mind Kim’s joking about her lack of a love life. As their laughter died down, Tara began telling the story.

Right. You're richer. Now weren't you happier when you were shit out of luck? You've got so much, but you've forgotten it's more fun when you don't give a fuck.

Hey Sarah,

Thanks for the quick update. I'm glad the morning after went so well. It's especially nice to see them talking and that they share the same sense of humour. And I'm so glad that they didn't have a big misunderstanding about the kiss. So now the question is who will call who first? That should be great. Good update. Debra

Hey Sarah,

Good update. I liked it this much .

Maybe one day in the near future you will update and I will like it this much . But I'm not sure.

You are a very well righter. I hope you get to keeping us supplied with reading material, like you keep people supplied with printers. I look forward to the next update, as I cannot even begin to think of what will happen next.

Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful story.

I'm back with some replies. The update will be ready sometime in the near future. I just need to edit it and all that. Officially my summer job has ended allowing me four uneventful weeks before classes start again. I'm very excited. This should give me extra time to actually get things accomplished. Everyone cross their fingers. Here are the replies:

sam darls – Hey. Glad you liked the update. More on the way soon.

littlecrazy80 – They’ll go out again… soon. I promise.

Insanity – Exchanging numbers is always a good thing. I’m happy you liked the update. Thanks.

JustSkipIt – Sorry this update isn’t as quick as the last (though I don’t think the last was very quick either). I agree it’s good that they have the same sense of humor. That’s always a good thing for a relationship. It’ll have to be a race to the phones to see who calls who first though.

reyjawk – I’m glad to know the story is good enough to read even while rebuilding a laptop. That’s reassuring for me. Thanks a bunch. The next update is soon.

TemperedCynic – Kim is gonna be our main comic relief in the story I think. I’m glad you think she’s funny. About that Fender bass. Hmm… well, I’m not so sure it’s going to pop up anytime later, but man is it a sweet piece of equipment. I get to stare at it every day because I have a picture of it tiled on my desktop. It’d be even sweeter to stare at it everyday in my hands, but I’ll just have to settle for my black Ibanez guitar with tortoise shell pickguard (nowhere near as killer as that bass). Anyway, I just threw it in there because I really like it. Here’s a picture. I’m glad you like my sig too. Gotta love the Bosstones.

When You Were Mine – It’s not hard to forget the Buffy issues with all the Tara/Willow stuff going on. The next update is soon, and I’m glad you liked the SpongeBob bit.

Kasey – Wow! A dancing banana… you liked it that much?! I think I’m gonna cry from happiness. Now it’s my sole priority to update again and have you like it enough for another dancing banana. You’re a gud righter yerself there sweetie. I’ll keep you supplied with reading material as long as you want me to (note how I didn’t say “good” reading material), but I no longer supply everyone with printers. Remember? They got me that cake and everything (Good luck to me and some nice frosty icing). I bet you’d love to know what happens next in the ol’ story, wouldn’t you? Well, wait a little while longer and you’ll find out. It’ll be fun. I promise. Do I ever disappoint (don’t answer that)? You’re welcome very much for this story.

Stroke of Luck – Woohoo for the little worshippy guy I got. Thanks. I’m sure they’ll call each other just as soon as they pick up the phone and figure out how to use it. Phones are tricky pieces of equipment sometimes.

willowsfrogfear – Pretty sure studying for exams is a little more important than reading my story, but I myself never study so who am I to judge? Thanks for taking the time out for little ol’ me. I’m glad you like it and everything, though there’s no need to yell. We can read you loud and clear. The continuing of the story is commencing in five, four, three….

Arwen276 – Always glad to see a new name in the feedback list. Thanks for starting to read this. It’s greatly appreciated. I’m happy you like it so far. Update is soon.

Drumbly – Yep, looks like Willow and Tara like SpongeBob, though if I’m not mistaken I think that was mentioned somewhere in the actual series at one point. I can’t really remember. Anyway, glad you liked the update and everything. More to come.

Willster – I’m glad you got all caught up. Love the Tony the Tiger “grrreat” subject for your feedback. Funny stuff. Woohoo! I rock. I never knew. Thanks. I’ll try to continue doing well with updates, and now that I’m no longer employed for the summer I’ll have more time to work on it. Yay for unemployment!

Sarah

Right. You're richer. Now weren't you happier when you were shit out of luck? You've got so much, but you've forgotten it's more fun when you don't give a fuck.

Track 9: MOOD 4 LUV by Reggie and the Full Effect featuring Fluxuation

Late Saturday afternoon Tara was at Elemental Music looking at various accessories in a catalogue with Jeremy.

“Personally, I’m thinking you should go with the Ibanez. I’ve only heard good things about it and that’s what Brady was using,” he was telling her.

“And we all know how he loves messing with distortion.” Tara smiled. “Is there anyway you can get it cheaper?” The overdrive pedal they were looking at was listed for a little under a hundred dollars, but Tara hated spending a ton of money. She knew Jeremy had some friends who could probably find it for less, so she thought she’d give that a try.

“I’m thinking I can get it down to at least seventy-five, but I’ll see if it’ll go any lower,” Jeremy let her know.

“That’d be great.” Just then Tara’s phone started to pulsate in the back pocket of her jeans. “Sorry, my pants are vibrating,” she said with a grin as she pulled out the phone. Having already programmed Willow’s numbers, the ID displayed the redhead’s name causing Tara’s grin to grow into a full smile. “Hello?”

“Tara? Hey, it’s um, it’s Willow.” On the other end, Willow was feeling extremely nervous. She was unsure whether it was too soon to call or if she should have waited until tomorrow.

“Hey, Willow. How are you?” Tara gestured to Jeremy that she was going to go outside for the call.

“I’m fine. Good even. How are you?” The redhead sat, fidgeting anxiously, on the edge of her bed.

As Tara made it outside, she took a seat on the window ledge. “Good. I’m good too.” The nervousness apparently was leaking through the phone because the blonde was beginning to feel it as well.

“I’m glad to hear that.” Willow began picking at non-existent fuzz on her pants.

For a moment, neither said anything, unsure of what exactly to say. Tara finally decided to bite the bullet. “So, what’s um, what’s up?”

“Oh!” It finally registered to Willow that she had a purpose for the phone call. “I was wondering… I mean, I didn’t know…” She was finding it extremely difficult to get out her question. Just spit it out already!

“Y-yeah?” Tara wasn’t sure what the redhead was trying to get at. Her nerves were getting worse though, so she closed her eyes and attempted to calm them.

“Um… are you busy Tuesday night?” There. I did it. Willow smiled to herself at her bravery.

“Oh… uh…” Tara was slightly taken aback by the question. A part of her had been expecting something like it coming, but the majority was outright surprised. Overall, however, her entire being was excited.

Willow read the hesitation as a bad sign and began to worry. “If you have plans already it’s okay. Or if you have to work…”

“No,” the blonde interrupted. “No plans. And I usually work mornings.”

The smile returned to the redhead’s face. “So you’re not busy?”

“Nope.” Tara began smiling as well.

“Then I was wondering. Would you want to get together and maybe have dinner or something?” Willow crossed her fingers as she waited for the answer.

It didn’t take long for Tara to say, “Sure. That sounds good.”

“Great.” A flood of excitement hit the redhead, and she tried with difficulty to contain it. “I was thinking, if you wanted to come over to my place I could cook.”

“Okay.” Tara was suddenly at a loss for words and could do little more than just smile.

“Does seven work for you?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay. Then Tuesday night at seven.” Willow needed to get off the phone soon or risk jumping up and down with Tara still on the line.

“Great. Tuesday at seven.”

“Alright. I’ll see you then.”

“Okay. Bye.”

“Bye.” Willow cut the call off before she let out a rather loud “Woo hoo!”

Tara flipped her phone closed and put it back in her pocket. She stayed seated on the ledge for a moment smiling to herself. Eventually she stood up to go back into the shop.

Jeremy was still at the counter flipping through catalogues. Hearing the door, he looked up and noticed the smile plastered across Tara’s face. “Somebody’s happy.”

Breaking out of her apparent trance, Tara blinked and looked at Jeremy, not completely sure of what he had just said. “Huh?”

“You look happy,” he reiterated.

“Oh.” The blonde blushed. “I have a date with Willow.”

“That was her on the phone?” he asked for clarification.

“Yeah.”

“Cool. First dates are fun.”

“I guess so,” Tara agreed, though she didn’t have much experience in that category. Not being completely close to Jeremy on a personal level, Tara veered the topic back to the catalogue. “So I think I’ll go with the Ibanez.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Jeremy said as he started writing down the order.

Monday morning Willow woke up and went downstairs to the kitchen just as Buffy was getting ready to go to work.

“Whoa, Will. It’s only eight. You’re up early. I thought your meeting wasn’t until Wednesday,” Buffy said as she noticed the redhead stumbling to the coffee maker, still dressed in her pajamas.

“It isn’t. Tara said she works mornings and I needed to ask her some stuff about tomorrow night, so I thought I’d stop by the bookstore,” Willow explained as she began pouring coffee. Pausing with the mug only half full, she looked at her friend suspiciously. “You didn’t make this coffee did you?”

Buffy laughed. “No, Liam did, so don’t worry. It should be okay,” she reassured while placing a bowl in the sink and walking toward the door. “I have to head down to work, but I’ll see you later. Are you going to be back for lunch?”

“I’m not sure, but I’ll definitely be back when you get done this evening,” the redhead said, as she looked through a bowl of fruit trying to decide which piece she wanted.

“Okay. If I don’t see you for lunch then I’ll see you tonight,” Buffy said before leaving.

Deciding against the fruit, Willow picked up her coffee mug and went back upstairs to pick something out to wear.

After a quick shower Willow got dressed before leaving for the bookstore. She wasn’t completely positive that Tara was working but thought she’d chance it anyway. Walking rather than driving, she passed Penny Lane and decided to stop in.

The morning crowd had filtered out, and Adam was standing at the counter reading a newspaper. He looked up at the sound of the door and smiled at Willow who was coming into the shop. “Hey, you’re here earlier than usual.” He noticed the redhead only carried a small purse rather than the larger bag she usually had with her when coming in to the coffee house. “And no computer. I take it this is a quick stop then.”

Willow smiled back at him. “Yeah. It’s a quick stop. But it’s kind of fortunate that you’re working this morning. You might be able to help me out with something.”

Adam folded his newspaper and leaned on the counter. “What can I do for you?”

“First, do you know if Tara’s working this morning?” Willow said with a hopeful look on her face.

“That would be a definite yes because she brought me to work today. Typically Tara works every morning,” Adam informed her. “Monday through Friday that is,” he amended. “Saturday and Sunday are a bit sketchier territory. Anyway, on to question two. I’m assuming there is a question two.”

“Yep, question two. I could ask Tara herself, but you probably know the answer as well.”

“Go for it.”

“As far as food goes…” Willow started only to be interrupted by the young man.

“You want to know what to cook for your date tomorrow?” Adam guessed with a smile. Tara had called him as soon as she left the music store on Saturday with the news. He was incredibly happy for her.

Willow blushed slightly and admitted, “Yeah. I’m not so much into the whole meat group except fish and didn’t know if she was cool with that. Because if she’s all about the steak and stuff I could totally swing that and work something else in for me.”

“No worries,” Adam reassured. “She’s ‘not so much into the whole meat group’ either. So that’s a definite no-go on the steak.”

The two shared a smile before Willow raised another question. “So, eggplant parmesan. You think she’ll like that?”

“She’ll love it.” Adam was impressed that the redhead was trying so hard to please his friend. He decided to help out a little more. “You have to promise me one thing though.”

“What’s that?” Willow asked nervously. She had no clue of what he might ask of her.

“You both have to stop in here afterwards for dessert. I’m working tomorrow night and I make a mean chocolate cake,” he said seriously.

Willow let out a sigh of relief and giggled. “I promise.”

“Good,” Adam smiled. “Is there anything else I can help you with?”

“Two mochas to go please.”

“No problem.”

After leaving Penny Lane, Willow continued walking to Maureen’s Books. An older man and woman were standing behind the counter, and Willow looked around in confusion for a moment. Tara came down a set of stairs off to the side of the room just as the pair looked up at the sound of the door. As the woman started to greet the customer, Tara noticed who had just come through the door.

“Willow. Hi.” She waved slightly and smiled. A visit from the redhead was one of the last things she had expected this morning, but she was happy about it nonetheless.

Hearing Tara’s voice, Willow turned and caught sight of the blonde off to the left of the counter. She was dressed in pair of denim overalls and a t-shirt and had her hair in two separate braids, one falling on each shoulder. That is absolutely adorable, Willow thought with a small grin. “Hey,” she said as she started to walk further into the store.

Once the redhead reached the counter, Tara began by introducing her to the other two people in the room. “Mr. and Mrs. Gibson, this is Willow. Willow, this is Mr. and Mrs. Gibson, shop owners.”

“Nice to meet you, dear,” Mrs. Gibson said, extending her hand towards Willow. “You can call me Maureen. And this is Joe,” she said, motioning towards her husband.

Placing the two cups of coffee on the counter, the redhead accepted the handshake. “Nice to meet you.”

Joe smiled and extended his hand as well. “Glad to meet you.”

Willow smiled and shook his hand. “If I would have known more people were going to be here, I would have brought coffee for everyone.”

“You brought coffee?” Tara perked up at the mention of something full of caffeine. She’d been dragging all morning from a long night before and could use a pick up.

“Mochas. You want?” the redhead asked, offering one of the cups to the blonde.

“You’re officially my new best friend,” Tara said as she took the beverage, earning a smile from the other woman.

Maureen could sense something going on between the two younger women and decided to give them some time alone. “Well, Joe and I are going to drop by the bank and then run some other errands. Are you good to go, Tara?”

Swallowing the liquid in her mouth, the blonde turned towards Mrs. Gibson. “Yeah. I’m good. I only have a few more boxes to move upstairs.”

“Alright. I’ll see you tomorrow then,” Maureen said as she and Joe started for the door. “Again, it was nice meeting you, Willow.”

The redhead gave the pair a small wave. “You too.”

Once the Gibson’s had gone, Tara turned back to Willow. “Thanks for the mocha.” She smiled shyly.

“You’re welcome. I didn’t want to come in teasing you with mine, so I figured you might like one as well,” Willow explained.

“Thanks. So what brings you in this morning?” The blonde placed her cup on the counter and put her hands in her pockets, unsure of what to do with them.

“About tomorrow night,” Willow started.

Tara’s stomach dropped at the words. She feared for the worst. She’s going to cancel. It was too good to be true.

“We were kind of vague on the plans,” the redhead continued. “So I thought we could maybe add in a little more detail.”

Relief washed over the blonde. “What kind of details did you have in mind?”

“Well this guy died on Saturday,” Willow said, causing Tara’s eyebrows to raise in confusion. “Oh, I didn’t know him or anything,” the redhead tried to clarify. “But living in a funeral home and all this kind of thing can have an effect.”

Tara nodded her head slightly as she tried to catch the meaning of what the other woman was telling her.

“The viewing is tomorrow night until eight, so chances are it could get a little crowded outside,” Willow went on. “So I thought I could come pick you up at your place to avoid any potential parking problems.”

“That sounds fine,” Tara confirmed. “I’ll just tell Henk what kind of car you drive and to expect you, and he’ll let you through the gate.”

“Ok,” Willow said with a nod.

The blonde had an expectant look on her face as she waited for Willow to tell her the information about the car.

A few seconds passed before the redhead noticed Tara was just staring at her. Sudden realization hit her and she blurted out, “Oh! You’ve never seen my car. Sorry.” A slight blush crept up on her cheeks from embarrassment.

With a small grin, Tara told the other woman, “It’s okay.”

“I’ll be in a silver Jetta. Is quarter ‘til seven okay?”

“Quarter ‘til seven works great,” Tara affirmed.

“I kind of made a promise for after dinner plans as well,” Willow said a little nervously.

“Yeah?” the blonde asked with a little curiosity in her voice.

“When I stopped for coffee today Adam made me promise we’d stop in after dinner for dessert. He said he’s making chocolate cake,” the redhead explained.

Tara’s eyes lit up. “Chocolate cake?! Oh man, you have to try this boy’s cake. He bakes like a god.”

Willow giggled at the blonde’s outburst. “I take it I made a good move with the promise then?”

“A great move. Fabulous even,” Tara confirmed. Calming down from the prospect of the dessert, she asked, “So you saw Adam today... he wasn’t still poking fun at me was he?”

“Umm... no. Why?” Willow asked in confusion. She didn’t recall anything being said at the coffee shop that classified as making fun of Tara.

“We both stayed at Kim’s last night and left from there for work. He made fun of me all morning because he said I look like a little kid today,” Tara explained with a grin. Adam’s teasing hadn’t been mean. It had been out of fun, and she didn’t really mind. “I’m shocked he didn’t tell you to tug on my hair. He was having a lot of fun doing that on the drive to Penny Lane.”

Willow smiled imagining the exchange between the two friends. “He didn’t mention anything, but I think you look adorable today.” Realizing what she’d said, the redhead’s cheeks burned to match her hair.

Tara’s cheeks flushed as well at the compliment. “Thanks.” To save themselves from an awkward silence, she continued, “Seriously though, I used Kim’s conditioner today and I smell like a little kid too. Do you remember that powdered candy Fun Dip?”

“Of course,” Willow verified. “I used to make a mess with it, and my mom wouldn’t let me eat it in the house because I’d get it all over everything.” She smiled thinking of the memory.

“Well, my hair smells like the white candy sticks they included to eat the powder with,” Tara explained with a giggle.

“No way!”

“I’m serious. Smell it if you don’t believe me.” Tara took a step towards the other woman.

Willow took the blonde up on the offer and leaned in to smell one of the braids. She felt slightly odd sniffing someone’s hair, but once she caught a whiff of a long forgotten scent she pulled back in awe. “That is so weird!”

“Tell me about it. My sisters and I would fight over those sticks. They were awesome,” Tara said.

“I never really liked them. I’d use my fingers instead,” the redhead explained with a grin. “Which explains all that mess I mentioned earlier.”

Tara couldn’t help but laugh at the mental image of a little Willow running around covered in sticky candy.

At that moment, a young man walked into the shop. Both women turned at the sound of the door.

“I have to...” Tara trailed off, motioning towards the man.

“No problem. I’ll just go look around,” Willow assured.

As Tara went to wait on the customer, Willow turned to look at the shelves closest to the cash register. She noticed that behind the counter were several boxes filled with a number of books and made a mental note to ask the blonde about them later. Finding a shelf of recently released works, the redhead kept herself busy for the short time it took until Tara finished ringing up the customer’s purchase.

“Well that didn’t take long,” Willow said as the patron left.

“Nope. It’s nice when people come in with a purpose and know exactly what they’re looking for,” the blonde said while she reclaimed the mocha she’d left earlier on the counter and took a drink.

“I couldn’t help but notice all the boxes back there,” Willow mentioned, pointing at the boxes she’d noticed a few minutes earlier.

“Oh. Yeah. I’m moving a bunch of books upstairs to storage to make room for CD shelves,” Tara explained.

“For when you switch over to a music and book store?” Willow tried to piece together from the conversation they’d had at their initial meeting.

Tara smiled, amazed that the other woman remembered that bit of information. “Yeah.”

“When did you plan on having it all finished?” the redhead asked before finishing off what was left of her mocha.

Tara held out her hand offering to throw the empty cup away. After placing it in the trash can behind the counter, she said, “From what Kim and I have discussed with Mrs. Gibson, we’re hoping to have it done by the end of the summer. If we get it done before then, it’d be great.”

“Sounds like a big task,” Willow said before offering, “Do you need any help carrying some of the boxes?”

The proposition was incredible. There were only four boxes left, but Tara had already taken that many upstairs earlier in the morning and they were quite heavy. There was a debate going on inside her head over whether or not to accept the offer. On one hand she would love the help, but on the other she would feel bad asking the redhead to take on the task. Looking in the other woman’s eyes Tara could see that Willow honestly wanted to help out, so she acquiesced. “A little help would be wonderful.”

It only took a short while for the pair to get all the boxes upstairs and the books reorganized on spare shelves. Coming back down from the final trip, Tara spoke up offering something to drink. They walked into the back room and to a small refrigerator that stood next to the couch.

“You could practically live here,” Willow said as she realized the shop held most of the comforts of a home. “All you’d really need is a bathroom.”

“And you’d have one,” Tara said, pointing to a door on one side of the room.

“Amazing.” Willow took the bottle of water handed to her by the blonde and opened it to take a drink. “I should probably head back home. It’s almost time for Buffy’s lunch break, and I have some stuff I need to talk to her about.”

Tara was disappointed that Willow was leaving, but she had some work to do before Kim came in later in the afternoon and knew she probably wouldn’t get it done with the redhead occupying her time. “Okay,” she said. “Thanks so much for helping me out and for the coffee earlier.”

“No problem. It was my pleasure,” Willow said as they began walking back to the front of the store. “So I’ll see you tomorrow night?”

“Yep. I’ll see you then,” Tara agreed.

“Okay. Have a good day.”

“You too,” the blonde said, giving a small wave as she watched Willow walk to the door.

Right. You're richer. Now weren't you happier when you were shit out of luck? You've got so much, but you've forgotten it's more fun when you don't give a fuck.

I'm somewhat senile in my advancing years and hope I didn't already comment on this part...

I like two things best about it:

1. Willow's effort. Yeah to a woman who thinks ahead, plans dinner, asks Tara's friends, and plans to pick her up. You go girl. That show real interest and Tara can see it.

2. Their increasing comfort with each other. Tara is starting to see just how genuine Willow is with her offer to help with the books and especially that the girl remembers from their first conversation about converting the store. More points for Willow.

Great job and can't wait for another udpate. Debra
