Part 52
"We are still going shopping today, right?" Anya asked as she and Tara sat in the waiting room at the doctor's office.
"Yes, after my appointment we will go shopping," Tara said smiling despite her nerves. Sure, she and Willow wanted a baby, but they had been thinking a year from now, once Jesse moved out, not a month after they decided they wanted another child. They had only tried the spell a few times and they were both fairly certain that they did something wrong and the ingredients were off. Tara never expected to be pregnant so soon. It usually took much longer to get pregnant, which is why they had started using the spell so early, so they could get it perfected before they started trying for real. Apparently the Goddess had other ideas.
"Are we shopping for baby things?" Anya asked, nudging Tara.
"You're joking right?" Tara said, "Have you ever been in our basement? It's like a baby thing's warehouse. We have clothes, toys, cribs, strollers, everything."
"Yeah, but most of that is girl stuff, what if you have a boy?" Anya asked.
"We have Rupert's things," Tara said, "Oh, what am I talking about? There's nothing to discuss or shop for until I find out for certain, and that won't happen for a few more days."
"So what do we do now?" Anya asked, obviously bored.
"We wait," Tara said.
"So let me get this straight," Buffy said as she drove Willow to the doctor, "You think you made a mistake with the spell, and you think that mistake was that you're pregnant not Tara," Buffy said recapping in less than thirty seconds what had taken Willow the better part of the last ten minutes to say.
"Right," Willow said.
"I didn't even know you wanted another baby," Buffy said.
"We always planned on having one more after Rhiannon, but when we got Mitchell, I just assumed that was it," Willow said, "but I could tell Tara really wanted another baby, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized I really wanted one too. So by the time Tara brought it up to me, I already had my heart set on it."
"I don't know how you do it," Buffy said shaking her head. "I've baby sat for you, and I can barely handle it for the few hours you're gone. I really don't know how you do it all day, every day."
"Sometimes, I don't know either," Willow said smiling. "I think it's Tara, she keeps everything all together. And it's so much easier now that Jesse and the twins are older. Rupert and Mitchell can do most everything on their own, and even Soleil and Rhiannon are becoming more independent. All that's left for us to do is make sure things get done, and chasing away the occasional monster, strictly of the metaphorical kind," Willow added.
"Do the kids know you've been planning this?" Buffy asked.
"I think Jesse knows something is up, but I don't think she's knows what. As for the other kids, I don't think they suspect a thing," Willow said.
"When are you going to tell them?" Buffy asked.
"Sometime after I tell Tara," Willow said, "but first things first, I have to find out."
"Right," Buffy said turning into the doctor's office parking lot narrowly missing another vehicle turning out. She couldn't be sure, but that looked like Anya's car.
"So I'm gonna do it," Alex said pacing back and forth in Jesse's room, "I'm gonna tell my dad now."
"Sure," Jesse said flipping the page of her magazine. Alex had been saying that for the past hour.
"No, I'm serious, I'm telling him now," Alex said.
"That's great," Jesse said turning another page.
"Will you listen to me?" Alex said grabbing the magazine and tossing it aside. "I'm going downstairs now to tell my father I'm gay, and I have a boyfriend."
"For real? You're going now?" Jesse asked sitting up.
"Yes, for real," he said moving toward the door. "Okay, I'm going," Alex said opening the door and stepping out, followed by Jesse. She followed him all the way down to the family room where Xander was having a tea party with Soleil and Rhiannon.
"Dad, I need to talk to you," Alex said very seriously.
"Okay," Xander said sipping his imaginary tea.
"Come on guys let's go upstairs and play," Jesse said.
"We like it here," Soleil said.
"You can play in my room," Jesse said trying to lure the girls out of the room. Soleil and Rhiannon looked at one another and then jumped up from the small table and ran to Jesse. She gave Alex a good luck look before taking the girls upstairs.
"What's up?" Xander asked motioning for his son to come sit next to him on the sofa.
"No, thanks, I'd rather stand," Alex said beginning to pace nervously. "I don't really know how to do this except to come right out and say it, so Dad, I'm gay."
"Are you sure?" Xander asked, standing and pacing.
"I'm very sure. I have a boyfriend," Alex said.
"A boyfriend?" Xander said trying to take it all in.
"Yes, his name is Gabe," Alex said, stopping to look at his father. "Are you okay?"
"Me, I'm fine," Xander said, and then he stopped pacing and looked at his son. From looking at him it was clear that he had been agonizing over telling him, and thus far Xander had not handled this well. "Hey," he said walking over to Alex, "I love you, I just want you to be happy," he said hugging him.
"You're not mad? You don't hate me?" Alex asked pulling away from the hug.
"Of course I don't hate you. You're my son," Xander said. "Did you tell Mom yet?"
"No, you know she can't keep a secret," Alex said smiling.
"I was the first one you told," Xander said excitedly as if he'd won some contest.
"Well actually... I told Jesse, and Willow and Tara, cause Jesse's my best friend, and I needed advice from Willow and Tara."
"I guess that's close enough to first," Xander said.
"I don't mean to interrupt," Harris said coming into the room, "but Summer and Rupert are fighting and they won't stop. Jesse's trying to get them apart, but she can't."
"I'll take Summer, you take Rupert," Xander said to his son, as they headed to the stairs.
"Sure," Alex said smiling. Willow had been right, nothing had changed. The kids were still fighting, his dad still relied on him to help separate them, but most importantly, he was still Alex. He had come out and the world hadn't stopped. Things were just like they always were, and just like they should be.
Part 53
Willow stood at the island in the kitchen absent mindedly stirring a pitcher of kool aid, while Tara made sandwiches for lunch. Willow had been stirring the kool aid for about ten minutes. She was expecting a call from the doctor today confirming what she was already ninety percent sure of. The hardest thing was going to be telling Tara. Willow knew how badly Tara wanted to have a baby, and how disappointed she would be when she found out Willow was the one who was pregnant.
"Baby, can you hand me a napkin?" Tara asked looking at her wife.
"Baby... What baby?... There's no baby," Willow said almost knocking the pitcher over.
"You, Will, I was talking about you," Tara said, "Is something wrong?"
"Wrong...wrong... There's no wrong here... All good," Willow said smiling trying to convince her wife she was fine, "here's the napkin."
"You're up to something," Tara said suspiciously, taking the napkin from Willow.
"Me?" Willow said innocently.
"Yes, you," Tara said pecking her wife on the cheek as she walked past to call the kids to lunch.
Willow breathed a sigh of relief and slumped down on the counter, she almost had a heart attack when the phone rang. She tried to quickly grab the phone, before one of the kids answered it, but she wasn't in time.
"Mom, phone," Jesse yelled, "and could you hurry I'm expecting a call."
Willow picked up the phone, and breathed deeply, preparing herself for the news she was about to hear.
"And then the dog says, 'only twice," Soleil said laughing as she came in the kitchen with Summer and Rhiannon, finishing a joke.
"That wasn't funny," Summer said, still trying to comprehend her little sister's joke.
"Yes it was, cause dog's can't talk," Soleil said rolling her eyes.
"It still isn't funny," Summer said grabbing a sandwich for herself, as well as one for Soleil and Rhiannon.
"Where's everyone else?" Willow asked hanging up the phone.
"Coming," Soleil said grabbing a bottle of juice from the refrigerator, and a bag of chips off the counter.
"Where are you taking that?" Willow asked watching as her daughter collected various items.
"We're eating at the picnic table," Rhiannon said excitedly, "Summer is having a picnic with us."
"That's very nice," Willow said, "but I think we need to leave some of that inside for everyone else."
"Okay," Soleil said placing it down on the counter. "What can we take?"
Willow poured some chips into a bowl, and put three pieces of fruit in a baggy and handed them to Soleil, and then grabbed three juice boxes and gave them to Rhiannon. Summer had already taken paper plates, and napkins, plus the three sandwiches.
"All set," Willow said smiling.
"Are you serious?" Harris said following Jesse into the kitchen, as Summer, Soleil, and Rhiannon went out.
"Totally serious, I couldn't believe it either, but then I... What?" Jesse asked noticing Willow staring at her.
"I was just listening," Willow said smiling, "What couldn't you believe?"
"Nothing," Jesse said looking over at Harris.
"Oh, I get it," Willow said, "it's okay, leave out poor old Mom."
"Okay," Jesse said laughing grabbing her lunch and turning to leave.
"Where are you eating?" Willow asked wondering why all the kids were eating elsewhere.
"Outside, it's summertime," Harris said, "We don't want to be cooped up inside all day."
"I suppose you two are going outside too," Willow said to Rupert and Mitchell who just come into the kitchen.
"No, Momma said we could eat in the tent in our room," Rupert said.
"Where is Momma?" Willow asked wondering why Tara hadn't come down with the kids.
"She's on the phone," Mitchell said.
"What is she doing on the phone?" Willow wondered out loud.
"I didn't ask," Rupert said.
"Oh, I wasn't asking, I was just thinking," Willow said.
"No, you asked," Rupert said grabbing juice boxes for himself and Mitchell.
"I know, I just meant I wasn't really asking, I was just, oh never mind," Willow said too consumed in her thoughts about Tara to explain it to the boys.
"Okay, Mom," Rupert said heading out of the kitchen, waving for Mitchell to follow him.
"Hey," Tara said coming into the kitchen looking at Willow who appeared to be lost in thought.
"Who were you on the phone with?" Willow asked.
"Is that what you were thinking about?" Tara asked a little startled by the question.
"Sort of," Willow said, "that and a lot of other things. I'm sorry," she said realizing how her question must have sounded. "I'm stressed."
"I can tell," Tara said moving over to stand next to her wife. "Do you want to talk about it?"
"Yes, and no," Willow said smiling.
"I have something I need to tell you, maybe it will help with your stress," Tara said taking Willow's hands and leading her to a chair.
"Is this bad news?" Willow asked sitting down, "cause bad news doesn't relieve stress, it actually does the opposite."
"I'm pregnant," Tara said.
"What? You are?" Willow said jumping up and wrapping her arms around her wife, "That's fantastic."
"I thought you wouldn't be happy," Tara said, "cause it's so soon."
"Are you kidding, I'm beyond happy," Willow said, "but,"she said her mood shifting, "I have something I have to tell you too."
"Should I sit?" Tara asked.
"Maybe," Willow said, "I'm pregnant too."
"Willow this is no time for jokes," Tara said shaking her head.
"I'm not joking. I went to the doctor yesterday, and I'm pregnant."
"We're pregnant," Tara said just trying to get a handle on the situation.
"We're pregnant," Willow repeated. "I was scared that you would be really disappointed because I knew how much you wanted to be pregnant, but now that we both are, it's so exciting."
"Are really listening to yourself?" Tara asked, "Will, we're both pregnant."
"I know," Willow said.
"Two pregnant women, means two babies, and Jesse isn't even out of school yet, these babies are going to born before she graduates, that means NINE children in the house," Tara said stressing the word nine.
"Nine?" Willow said sitting back down, she hadn't thought of that.
"Yes, nine," Tara said smiling.
"Well, we were ready for eight, so what's nine," Willow said smiling at Tara. "I have all the confidence in the world that we can handle this."
"Plus we get to go through everything together," Tara said, "all the morning sickness, and aches, oh and maybe we'll give birth at the same time too."
"Oh, God, I forgot all about giving birth," Willow said.
"It'll be great," Tara said excitedly.
"What'll be great?" Jesse asked as she and Harris returned to the kitchen with their glasses.
Willow and Tara looked at one another. They had completely forgotten about telling the kids.
"I'm gonna go get some work done," Willow said kissing Tara before leaving the kitchen.
"What was that all about?" Jesse asked, "Did we interrupt something?"
"Not at all," Tara said smiling, cleaning up the island. Tara watched as Harris patted Jesse on the back and gave her a supportive glance before leaving the kitchen. She would have asked what it was about, but she was fairly certain Jesse was going to tell her.
"Do you need any help?" Jesse asked.
"Sure," Tara said handing Jesse the sandwiches she was wrapping, so Jesse could place them in the refrigerator.
"Can I talk to you about something important?" Jesse asked closing the refrigerator door and sitting on a stool at the island.
"Always," Tara said stopping and looking at her daughter.
"Well, you know I've been going out with Dylan for a while and we're pretty serious about each other," Jesse said looking down at her hands as she fiddled with a twist tie that was on the island. "I'm almost 17 now, and I think maybe it would be a good idea for me to start taking birth control," Jesse said looking up at her mother.
"Are you already..."
"No," Jesse said quickly, "It's for just in case."
"I know we've talked a lot about sex, is there anything you want to ask me about that we haven't talked about yet?" Tara asked trying her best to grasp the fact that her sixteen year old daughter wanted to take birth control. It wasn't like Tara thought Jesse would be a virgin forever, but she wasn't ready for her to do anything now.
"No, I understand everything," Jesse said, "and I only want to take them just in case I decide I'm ready. I promise you I'm not having sex, not yet, but I really like Dylan, I think I might even love him, and when I'm ready to make that commitment I want to be prepared."
"Okay," Tara said smiling adoringly at her daughter, such wisdom for someone so young, "I'll make an appointment. Do you want your Mom to know?"
"I was kinda hoping you would tell her," Jesse said, "I know she's gonna freak out about this."
Tara smiled, knowing Jesse was right about Willow's reaction, "Okay, I'll tell her, but when you do decide to have sex, I want to know," Tara said, almost not believing she was saying it, but she would rather know what was going on in her daughter's life then have to guess.
"I promise," Jesse said standing and hugging her mother, before leaving the room.
Tara took a deep breath calming herself as she went back to her cleaning, that would help calm her too. Then like a lightening bolt striking her, she realized Jesse had been talking to Harris about this. Harris who was only 12, not even a teenager yet. She might just have to clean the whole house.
Part 54
"Why am I the only one throwing up?" Willow asked climbing back into the bed and snuggling up next to Tara, resting her head on her wife's chest.
"Baby, I'm sorry, I wish I could be throwing up too, but I guess I don't have morning sickness," Tara said stroking Willow's hair.
"That isn't fair," Willow complained. "When we discussed this you said we'd do everything together."
"I really thought we would," Tara said sheepishly.
"I know you did," Willow said turning to face her wife, "It's not your fault, I just don't want to throw up anymore."
"Do you want me to go make you some breakfast?" Tara asked.
"Oh, Tara... Why did you mention food?" Willow said jumping up and running from the room.
"Oops," Tara said climbing out of bed and reaching for her robe. Grabbing Willow's robe she carried it into the bathroom. Kneeling next to her wife, she rubbed her back.
"Thanks," Willow said sitting down on the floor.
"Here have some water," Tara said handing her a small cup.
"I didn't miss this," Willow smiled weakly, sipping her water.
"I did," Tara said dreamily.
"You missed getting sick?"
"I missed it all," she said looking at Willow.
"What's going on?" Rhiannon asked padding into the bathroom, with her stuffed bunny, using her other hand to rub her eyes.
"I'm sorry, did we wake you?" Tara asked sitting Rhiannon in her lap.
"Yeah," Rhiannon said yawning, curling up on her Momma's lap.
"Why don't we all go back to bed for a little bit longer?" Willow suggested.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Tara asked standing with Rhiannon in her arms.
"I'm fine now," Willow said smiling. Rhiannon was already back asleep.
"Peanuts in the middle," Rhiannon said groggily, as Tara sat her down in the bed.
"Give me that," Rupert said grabbing onto the cereal box.
"I was doing it," Soleil said pulling equally hard.
"Hey, both of you let it go," Jesse said taking the box. "Go sit at the table."
"You said we could help," Soleil said stomping toward the table.
"I said if you were good and quiet," Jesse said, "Do you want to wake them up?"
"No," Soleil and Rupert said in unison.
"Then no more fighting," Jesse said handing the box to Soleil, "Go ahead and pour the cereal, and Rupert you can get the juice glasses down."
"Harris burned the pancakes again," Summer said.
"I'm trying, I'm no good at this," Harris said handing the spatula to Summer.
"Can you sneak upstairs and see if Rhiannon has them fooled?" Jesse asked Harris.
"You got it," Harris said exiting the kitchen.
"I'm finished squeezing the oranges," Mitchell said holding up a full pitcher of juice.
"Great, okay so that just leaves the pancakes. How are they coming?" Jesse asked.
"Almost finished," Summer said flipping them expertly.
"They're totally buying it," Harris said coming back into the kitchen. "Rhiannon's talking in her sleep and everything."
"She probably really fell asleep," Summer said smiling, as she plated up the pancakes.
"Okay, little ones in front," Jesse said handing Soleil and Mitchell both a vase with a rose in it. "Okay, Rupert, Harris you guys take the milk and the juice, and Summer and I will carry the trays. Walk very quietly, no noise, we want to surprise them."
"We got it," Soleil said rolling her eyes impatiently.
"All right, let's go."
"Do you hear something?" Tara whispered.
"Yes, I hear you talking," Willow said, "Go back to sleep."
"No, Will, I'm serious," Tara said slowly sitting up so she wouldn't wake Rhiannon. "It could be a burglar."
"Tara, I don't hear... I do hear something," Willow said sitting up as well.
"Go see what it is," Tara said.
"Me, why me?"
"Cause I'm scared," Tara said looking at her wife. "And you're so strong, and brave... And"
"I get it, I'll go," Willow said smiling at Tara. Just as she was getting out of bed, their door opened.
"Surprise!" Soleil shouted, "Hey I said surprise," she said looking at her fellow siblings who had not shouted the greeting.
"We heard you," Summer said, "But we weren't going to yell."
"What's this for?" Tara asked.
"Congratulations on being pregnant breakfast," Harris said smiling.
"Yeah, we realized that Mom must have been pregnant a few days ago, all the barfing you know," Summer said.
"And so we thought we'd make it easy on you guys, and celebrate it before you had to go through telling us," Jesse said handing a tray to Willow.
"You think you're so clever, don't you?" Willow asked.
"Well, yeah," Summer said giving Tara her tray.
"You're not," Willow said smiling at Tara.
"We aren't?" Rupert asked.
"You're not pregnant?" Mitchell asked.
"I am," Willow said.
"So what's the deal then?" Jesse asked.
"I am too," Tara said.
"What!!!"
