Tara had listened to Buffy's story, nodding occasionally, and blushing exponentially. "Oh...okay."
"Okay?" Buffy arched an eyebrow at Tara, "so you guys don't mind finding out you just made out with your roommate in front of complete strangers? Well, I know Willow doesn't mind, 'cause you know, she's completely jonesing for you Tara but are you...oww!" Buffy pulled up one leg and rubbed her shin. She glanced at Willow who was shooting daggers at her and she realized what she had said. "Ohh...oops, I'm sorry Wills." She smiled hesitantly at her friend.
"It's okay." Surprisingly it was Tara who spoke first. "I already knew."
"You did?" Willow turned to the blonde at her side, "well, I mean, besides this morning obviously...but you knew?"
"You told me last night, on our date, remember?" She leaned in and whispered in Willow's ear.
"Oh yeah..." Willow had indeed said she was lusting after the blonde while they were waiting for their dinner...she remembered.
Buffy grinned and sat up in her seat. "You knew it was a date?"
"Um, yes."
"And what happened this morning?"
"Oh, um..." Tara ducked her head down and rested it on Willow's shoulder. Willow smiled brightly at the slayer who grinned happily back. "Well, Buffy...this morning I proposed to Tara, and she said yes!"
"Yay...wait...huh?" Buffy went from happy to confused to well, more confused. "You proposed? Will! You haven't even slept together yet...right?"
"Haven't you ever heard of saving yourself for marriage?"
"Well yeah, but who does that anymore? Will, seriously? You're getting married?"
Willow shrugged her shoulders and smiled innocently at the slayer. Tara tried to hold back the laughter bubbling inside her, and lightly bit down on Willow's shoulder. Buffy stared dumbfounded at her best friend, having been taken completely by surprise. "I...ahh, whaa, um...wow, um...congratulations?"
Willow rolled her eyes and laughed. "Buffy, does 'duh' mean anything to you? I'm kidding you doofus." Willow smirked at the gullible slayer. "I can't believe you fell for that."
"Well, I...ahh." Buffy crossed her arms over her chest and pouted. "You're no fun."
"We just kissed. And it was, you know..." Willow shrugged her shoulders and Tara lifted her head up. They made eye contact. "It was wonderful."
"Awww...so are you guys...um, you girls... girlfriends now?"
"Umm," Willow had been wondering about that same question throughout breakfast. Might as well ask now. Willow leaned over and whispered in Tara's ear, "Tara, would you be my girlfriend?"
Buffy picked up the conversation with her slayer hearing and smiled as Willow and Tara's happiness engulfed her too.
Tara nodded when Willow pulled back. She kissed Willow softly, "yes."
The two witches exchanged goofy smiles as their eyes sparkled at each other. After a moment Willow turned to Buffy and nodded, "yes, we're girlfriends now."
***
After breakfast they strolled down Main Street, window-shopping as they went along. Willow was more than aware of Tara's birthday the next day and she couldn't help cataloging everything they looked at and what Tara seemed interested in. Tara had made some appreciative comments outside the Magic Shop, as well as outside a jewelry store and the pet store. Willow was wondering whether a magically inclined kitty with a diamond-studded collar would be an appropriate gift.
As they walked past the Grotto Buffy stopped dead in her tracks. "I want beer. Do you want beer?"
Willow shook her head as she regarded the slayer skeptically. "Not really, no. I actually prefer making out with my girlfriend when I'm a little less inebriated/intoxicated."
"Will!" Tara tugged on their clasped hands and scolded the redhead. "What?" Willow smiled sweetly at her girlfriend, looking completely innocent and unawares. "You don't prefer making out with me when you can remember it afterwards?"
"Of course I do! It's just..." Tara sighed, and continued more quietly, "I'm n-not used to this yet, and I get a little um, embarrassed."
"Not used to what? Us?" Tara nodded in reply. "Oh, so you want us to take it more slowly?" Willow started letting go of Tara's hand but the blonde clasped their hands more tightly and shook her head. "No, not more slowly, just um..."
Willow took a step closer to her girlfriend, and put her arm around her waist. "Yes?"
Tara leaned in and whispered in Willow's ear, "more privately."
Willow had a questioning look, so Tara nodded towards the slayer who was already halfway down the steps leading to the bar. The light dawned on Willow, "ohhh...you don't want me to broadcast our snuggles to Buffy?"
"Um," Tara giggled at Willow's usage of 'snuggles', "no, just to me. I mean, you can talk about it, but can you do it behind my back?" She pulled Willow towards the entrance of the Grotto so they were partly hidden from people walking up and down Main Street.
"You want me to talk behind your back? You realize how weird that sounds?"
Tara smiled. "I know. It just saves me the embarrassment, until I get used to it. Although there are some things we shouldn't discuss with anyone."
"What kinda things? Naughty things?" Willow smiled elfishly and Tara could do nothing but kiss her. She nodded and said quietly, "yes, because I wanna be the only one who knows what kind of sound you make when I kiss you right here." She traced a spot just above Willow's collarbone then leaned in and kissed it. Willow let out a half-whimper half-moan from the sensation, which drove Tara crazy. She pushed Willow up against the wall, "I love that sound."
***
Buffy sat next to her four male friends and drank beer. She wasn't sure why. She didn't even like beer all that much. But something was nagging at her, making her grave the alcoholic substance. With every sip her IQ dropped, with every mug her brain capacity diminished and with every pitcher any resemblance of a vocabulary became nonexistent.
When Willow and Tara entered the bar they saw the slayer in the back and frowned. They went to the bar and Xander came over. "Xander, why do you keep giving Buffy beer?"
"My boss won't let me cut them off. He tells me to keep serving them."
"What kind of a money hungry proprietor is he?" Willow sighed and sat down on a barstool. Xander leaned on the bar and employed his empathy face, "Rough day?"
"Best day actually...so I think we should celebrate, Tara?"
Tara sat down next to Willow, "Um, I don't want to drink Will."
"Oh no, nothing like that. Just some...Xander, give me two virgin scotch on the rocks."
Xander looked like he was trying to divide 11 by 3 without much success. "And that would be?"
"Ice chips. Two glasses."
"Oh, right."
"And give me a small bottle of Sprite as well."
"Sure thing Wills."
Xander came back with a bottle of Sprite and two glasses. He scooped up some ice cubes and filled each glass two-thirds of the way. "Will, what's 11 divided by 3?"
"3 and 2/3."
"Ahh...so, anyway...what are we celebrating?"
Willow filled both glasses with Sprite and then handed one to Tara. "We are celebrating the fact that today is the best day in all of existence, and that Tara is now my girlfriend. Of all the people at UC Sunnydale...of all the people Tara could be with...heck, of all the people in the world...she chose me." She smiled at Tara and tried to convey everything she was feeling with her look. "You chose me."
Tara ducked her head as she felt herself blushing furiously and gave an imperceptive nod. She took a deep breath and looked up with bright blue eyes. "You're the only one Will," she said quietly, "I've never wanted anyone else."
"Really?" Willow leaned closer and was about to kiss Tara when something caught her eye and she frowned. "W-what's wrong?" Willow drew back, "hold on." She took one sip of her Sprite then threw the liquid in Xander's face.
"Hey!" Xander spluttered and wiped his face with the back of his hand.
Willow glared at her friend. "I'm just gonna say this once Xander, so listen up. I know what you did last night, and I saw the look on your face just now."
Xander protested, "but I ju-"
"Get. Over. It! Okay? I mean, for crying out loud Xander. You're being a complete jerk. Tara's my girlfriend... Don't...don't look at her that way and stop thinking like that!"
Xander winced and looked good and well reprimanded. "I'm sorry Wills. And I'm sorry Tara." Xander apologized sincerely and backed away from the bar. "I'll just um, be over there..." He walked to the other end of the bar and started wiping off the counter.
Willow sighed and turned to Tara. "I'm sorry..." Tara's lips silenced the redhead. "Thank you. That was um..." she grinned, "very b-butch of you."
"Tara!" Willow laughed, "oh my god, you think I'm butch?"
"Goddess, no. You're pink and fluffy and adorable, but you do have your moments...and they're um, very s-sexy."
"Okay, we're going home right now." Willow jumped from her chair and held her hand out for Tara. "Buffy, let's go!"
"Don't wanna..."
"I'll be right back." Willow turned from her girlfriend and jogged over to the slayer. She grabbed Buffy's hands and pulled her up. The slayer protested weakly but Willow managed to guide her away from the beer towards Tara. Tara held her empty glass of Sprite and plucked an ice cube from the glass and sucked on it. She held one out for Willow when she and the slayer came closer. "Want one?" Willow opened her mouth and engulfed the ice cube as well as Tara's fingers. Tara drew her fingers back slowly. Their eyes met and could see a desire for one another that threaten to consume them.
"O-kay," Tara squeaked and pushed Buffy towards the entrance, "let's go, right now."
***
"I don't know how it happened G-Man. One minute they were regular drunk college students, the next minute Cro-Magnon man is attacking me."
Xander had driven straight to Giles' apartment when his boss had revealed to him the secret of the beer he served, and apparently the water too. Xander had been thankful he hadn't served anyone a bottle of water, until he remembered that ice cubes where made of water, duh.
"I'm sure everything is all right." They walked down the hallway towards slayer-central. Xander pointed at Buffy's door.
"Okay? Did I not mention the Cro-Magnon part?" Xander knocked once and opened the door.
"Well, yes you did but I'm sure...oh dear lord."
Tara looked up at the intrusion and stopped drawing. She, Willow and Buffy all stood up from their crouched position on the floor and regarded the two men. They exuded confidence and strength, and it set Giles and Xander back a few steps. "Wow!"
Willow and Tara stepped closer together, and Willow took a slight step forward in a protective stance. Their hair was long and unruly. Even Willow's short crop had grown a dozen inches. It was a quite a sight.
"I guess 'everything is all right' just flew out the window."
"I'd say so, yes." Giles looked around the room and noticed the petroglyphic paintings adorning the walls. Animals and people in different positions (of the non-naughty variety, of course) greeted the watcher. For a moment he wondered where on earth the girls had actually gotten a red-clay pigment in Sunnydale.
"So what's the deal Watcher-man?"
"Well, for starters, please stop calling me that. And close the door."
"O-kay." Xander stepped back and pushed the door shut. Willow jumped at the sound and growled at the dark-haired boy as she stepped back and covered Tara with one arm. She picked up a stake and pointed it towards Xander.
"Um, Giles?"
"It's okay Xander. Just don't make any sudden movements or reach for Tara. I dare say Willow might pummel you to death."
"No chance of that happening. She already set me straight earlier today. Tara is off limits."
"Pardon?" Giles walked backwards to Xander and they both leaned up against the door.
"I may have done some inappropriate leering while Will and Tara were with the smoochies, I'm over it now."
"Smoochies?"
"Girlfriends...Will made her move, Tara couldn't resist."
"It was about time, I say."
"You knew?"
"Well, of course I knew. You just had to see them together to know, or even just hear one talk about the other. It was clear as day."
"Huh...so...we just wait?"
"That seems like the best course of action."
"Do you ever answer in a simple way, like with just a 'yes' or a 'no'?"
"I most certainly do."
"Really?"
"I stand by my previous statement."
"Are you sure?"
"Xander, do shut up."
Xander chuckled and slid down on the floor. Giles followed and they sat side by side and watched their friends with rapt attention. Willow scrunched up her nose and turned to Tara. She grunted and pointed at Xander and Giles. Tara grunted back and dragged Willow to the left wall and pointed to a petroglyph of two men with spears hunting an elephant. Willow huffed and looked at Giles and Xander then back at the painting. She grunted at Tara and shook her head.
"Can they not talk?"
"No, prehistoric people didn't have spoken language."
Buffy moved to her desk chair and sat down. She became intrigued by its rotative abilities and started spinning in circles.
"Did prehistoric people have a brain?"
"A small one, yes."
Willow and Tara crouched back down to the floor and Tara dipped her fingers in a small red puddle next to her. She drew lines and circles on Willow's face and then Willow repeated the act on Tara. The leaned their foreheads together and Willow mumbled something.
"I thought you said they couldn't speak?"
Giles disregarded Xander's question and watched the interaction between the two witches. Quite extraordinary. It was like going back in time, and reliving a moment in history.
Willow traced the lines on Tara's face with her index fingers then she kissed her forehead, both cheeks and finally her lips.
"Wow, they had lesbians in prehistoric times too?"
Giles rolled his eyes, "men and women came together for propagation, but they preferred keeping the company of the same sex."
Willow placed two fingers by her mouth and grunted quietly to Tara. The blonde nodded and they both stood up.
Willow grabbed a stake and Tara picked up a small dagger.
"Giles what's happening?"
"I'm not quite sure."
The two prehistoric witches walked towards the door and Willow kicked the soles of Xander's shoes. He scrambled to his feet and helped Giles up. "I'm thinking they want out."
"We mustn't let them."
Willow tried to push Xander away from the door but he stood still. "No, outside bad. Inside good." Willow growled and pushed him harder, but Xander pushed back. Willow brought up her stake and Xander visible blanched. "Giles..."
"Move away from the door Xander. I'll follow them, you stay with Buffy."
"O-kay." Xander stepped away from the door and backed into Giles. Willow glared at her friend then went to the door. She studied it, feeling her way. She banged, kicked and scratched the door trying to get it open. When she reached the handle she fumbled with it for a moment until she managed to open the door. Tara grunted in appreciation and smiled at Willow. They walked out the door and looked from left to right. Tara grunted and pulled Willow to the right, down the hall. Giles followed them a few paces behind.
"So..." Xander turned towards Buffy, still spinning around in her chair. "Having fun?"
Buffy stopped spinning and looked up at Xander. She sniffed the air and stood up, wobbling slightly from all the spinning. She walked towards Xander. "Boy smell nice." She sniffed at Xander and buried her nose in his collar. He smelled like beer. "Hey, you can talk...and ahh, that tickles." Xander gently pushed Buffy away. "Okay Buff. Let's sit down." He tried to push her towards her bed but she swiped his hands away. "Want beer." She sidestepped Xander and went towards the door. Xander grabbed her by the shoulders and spun her around. "No, no, no...beer bad." Buffy growled and pushed Xander away. Slayer-strength kicked in and Xander went flying to the ground, hitting his head at the side of her nightstand. "Buffy strong." The slayer said, and walked out the door.
"Yes, Buffy is freakishly strong and why am I always the one getting hurt?" Xander got up and rubbed the back of his head. He ran out the door and followed Buffy.
***
Willow and Tara had apparently gone scouring for food and they managed to sniff their way to the student café. They walked away with an assortment of food and a screaming cashier. Giles intercepted just in time before Tara deployed the dagger she was holding. He handed the cashier who stared dumbfounded at the knife in Tara's hand a twenty-dollar bill and pushed her on her way back towards the register. Giles followed the witches off campus as they walked towards the down town area. Trees ran along side the pathway so it was easy for Giles to stay relatively hidden as he followed.
Four gangly looking guys came running towards them and Giles soon realized they weren't gangly as much as they were prehistoric and hunched forward. They stopped in front of Willow and Tara and the six of them had an argument, which consisted of grunts and groans and the occasional monkey-like squeals from two of the guys. One of them made a grab for Tara and Willow hit him by the temple with her stake. He growled at her and pushed her aside with force. The redhead went flying into a tree and broke a low branch in the process. She stood up easily and grabbed the broken branch. She walked slowly and decisively towards the guy who had pushed her. He was clutching his right arm and blood seeped through his shirt. Tara stood defiantly in front of him, her dagger raised up high. Willow sidled up beside Tara and rested the branch on her shoulder.
They challenged the four guys with their looks and posture to try again. The guys looked at each other with baffled expressions. They were used to taking what they wanted, women included, and this wasn't part of their daily regime. Two girls walked past the six of them and the four guys looked from Willow and Tara to the new arrivals. They knew a better prospect when they saw one and seized the chance, but before the first guy could take a second step Willow swung the branch, knocking him out cold. She moved swiftly between the girls and the three remaining cavemen and gripped the branch tightly. If she had a vocabulary, she would have taunted them — 'make your move' her expression said, 'just try it and I'll kick your ass'.
Giles watched with gripping fascination. Who knew Willow could be such a badass. And did I really think badass? Giles shook his head and made a note to himself to associate more with grown-ups for the next couple of weeks.
The cavemen retreated slowly away from the witches and left their fallen comrade lying in the ground. They turned on their heels and ran towards the only place they felt comfortable in: The Grotto.
***
Xander, Buffy and Giles sat on a bench outside the Grotto. A fire truck was parked in front of the bar and firemen and policemen were milling around the area. The cavemen had manage to set fire to their only home and were now locked in a parked SUV few yards away. Buffy had smelled the smoke and dashed into the fire. She had (reluctantly) saved Parker and his latest conquest from a slow burning death then left the premises herself when she realized there was nothing she could do. The fire extinguishers had been a little too complicated for the cave-slayer. Best leave the fire to the professionals.
Xander stretched his arms and yawned. "So, have we had enough fun for one night?"
"Buffy tired." The slayer rested her head on Giles' shoulder.
"And was there a lesson in all this, huh? What did we learn about beer?"
"Foamy."
Xander got up and shook his legs. "Good, just as long as that's clear. Anyways I think that the boys in the car are contained for the time being. This will give them some time to ponder the geo-political ramifications of being mean to me!"
Buffy got up and walked towards the van to her beer buds. She banged on the windows to get their attention. She noticed a club resting by one of the tires so she picked it up and tabbed the window with it.
"Whose van is that?" Giles asked. Xander shrugged his shoulders, "I dunno. Wasn't locked."
Buffy heard a noise to her right and saw Parker walking towards her. She glared at the dust-covered boy but trudged warily towards him.
"Buffy...Buffy, I dunno how to say this. I'm sorry for how I treated you before. It was wrong of me and I'm sorry. You were great tonight, really. I might not deserve this but do you think that you could forgive me?" Parker batted his eyelashes and smiled at Buffy.
The slayer tilted her head to the side as she regarded Parker. She raised the club in her hand and whacked him over the side of his head, knocking him out.
Xander and Giles gathered around Buffy and looked down at Parker. Xander smiled and put his arm around Buffy's shoulder and guided her away.
"Say G-Man, where did the two witches go?"
"I have no idea. I lost them right before the fire...they ran after the Neanderthals and I assumed they were here...but do not worry. I checked with the Fire Marshall. There was no one left inside the bar."
"Huh, I wonder where they are?"
***
Anyone skulking on rooftops or just looking outside a second-story window would have seen the two women lying on top of the fire truck as it drove away from the Grotto. One had short fiery red hair, which sparkled in the city lights, the other had honey-blonde tresses that flowed over her shoulders and shone under the full moon. They were locked in a tight embrace and they rolled around, sighing and smiling, as they kissed the night away.
