Lil boo: This fic rocks? Um, yay! :) Thanks, I'm so glad you're enjoying it.

Doppelganger5x5: Finally updated? Was it really that long? I'm sorry - I didn't realize... damn school, getting in the way. But hopefully the next update will be sooner - I've already written 8 pages. Thanks for reading.

topSmaI: Thanks Chelle. I don't think I've seen you on this board before? Been lurking long? I'm relieved this story is easy to get into - I was afraid I was jumping from one place to the next.

good2cats: You're welcome Karen, thanks for reading. We'll make a system, what do you say? I share, you read? It could work :)

Lol.

Not lurking so much as under another name. Read ‘topSmaI’ backwards…

Had internet troubles and had to get a different name, basically. But don’t tell… kinda ruins the whole reason for a new name…

“I've already written 8 pages.”

*grins* can’t wait!

Chapter 3: Demons 'R' Us - Part A

Postby tinnakaren » Thu Mar 11, 2004 6:13 pm

Well, first of all, sorry this isn't a complete chapter. This chapter has been giving me such a pain in the - you know what. But I managed to finish a part I'm relatively happy with. The rest of the chapter should be up very soon - like this weekend soon - unless my nephew throws my laptop to the floor again :) And man, I think I just jinxed by computer.

Second of all, thanks to Charlie for beta-ing and for just being an all-around wonderful gal.

And third of all, there's an actual warning before you read this chapter - huh, figure that.

- There's a major Ick-Factor which gives me the creeps

- a small cliffhanger in the end.

- and a deja-vu moment for those of you who read the vignette I posted before it turned into the mess it is today.

Anyway, on to the chapter...

Chapter 3: Demons 'R' Us

A knock on the door woke Willow up from her almost nap. She looked at the poetry book in front of her and huffed. Eugh! This is more boring than late night talk shows. Remembering the knock she yelled, "Come in!"

Buffy poked her head through the half-open door. "Hey Will!"

"Buffy! Come in." Willow sat up and tossed the book on her nightstand.

"You busy?" the slayer asked as she stepped into the room and closed the door.

"Not at all," Willow yawned. "English lit just put me to sleep again."

"Oh yeah, I slept through the entire class yesterday." Buffy skipped over the room and plunked herself on the bed next to Will.

"So what's up? You're all perky-Buffy!"

"Where's Tara?" Buffy asked, noticing the absence of the newly appointed head witch in the Scooby gang.

"Class...so?"

"Oh right...well, I just got back from Parker."

Willow's eyes widened and she looked at her Hello Kitty watch. "It's 10 in the morning! Oh my god, did it happen?"

Buffy grinned, smug and satisfied. "Oh yeah."

"Go Buffy!" Willow enthused and bounced in her bed. "Wait, this is a Go-Buffy moment right? I don't wanna be all bouncy if this is Support-y-Willow moment."

"Oh yeah, this is definitely a Go-Buffy-slash-Bouncy-Willow moment."

"Yay! So...how was it?"

"Umm..." Buffy smiled dreamily, "it was nice."

"Nice?"

"Yeah, nice." Buffy nodded.

"And that's good right?"

"That's of the good, yeah."

"Yay!" Willow raised her arms in a mock-cheer. "So when are you gonna see him again?"

"He said he was gonna call later today."

"Neat!" Willow grinned, happy for her friend. Buffy grinned back. Willow was just too damn adorable with her bouncy enthusiasm, but she did come in here for a reason, not that talking about her night with Parker wasn't a reason enough — it just wasn't the reason. "Will, can we talk?"

"As opposed to what we've been doing?" Willow giggled.

"Will, I'm being serious." Buffy chastised the redhead.

"Sure Buff, what's up?" Willow grinned.

Buffy looked at the redhead, studying her. "Well, I've kinda been noticing some things about you lately...and-"

"Yeah?" Willow said hesitantly, not sure if she liked how this conversation was starting. Noticing what?

Buffy grabbed a pillow from Willow's bed and placed it in her lap. She fidgeted with the seams for a moment. "Well, okay...I don't really know how to start..."

"I've heard the beginning works." Willow quipped.

"Smartass!" Buffy replied playfully, but then she turned serious again. "Okay, here goes...umm." Buffy was trying to figure out the right words to say this. She'd been thinking about this for some time now, and the more she thought about it, the more it made sense.

"Buff?" Willow interrupted her thoughts.

"I'm trying, geez..." Buffy huffed.

"Sorry." The redhead smiled and made a gesture for Buffy to continue.

"Well, I've noticed that besides Xander, you've never really had a crush on anyone, right?" Buffy started.

Willow shrugged her shoulders. "I guess."

Buffy sighed, "And you don't think that's, um, slightly odd? I mean I drool over every other hottie that comes a long."

"Every other?"

"Yeah, okay...every, that's not the point."

"What is the point?"

"I'm getting to it..." Buffy insisted. "Well this is the time when our hormones are supposed to be all over the place, right? And please stop me when I start making a fool of myself."

Willow laughed. "Tall order!"

"Hey!" Buffy swatted her with the pillow in reply.

"Okay, okay. You may continue."

Buffy glared at the redhead for moment, until she was sure Willow would behave. "Okay, well, I know mine are shooting left and right — are yours?

"Umm-"

"I mean... are you even attracted to other people?"

"Sure I am."

"Really? Who?"

"What, you want like names?" Buffy nodded. "Of people?" Buffy kept nodding. "That I've been attracted too?"

"Yes Will."

"Why?" Willow grimaced. She really didn't want to get into this conversation with Buffy right now.

"Well, I worry about you sometimes." Buffy explained. She gave the redhead a sympathetic look.

"Worry?"

"Yeah, that you might be missing out on something."

"What? Like having a boyfriend?"

"Yeah, that and just going on a date — kissing — making out...you know, fun stuff." Buffy smiled, remembering her night with Parker. It had been very fun.

"Well, maybe I just haven't found someone worth crushing on recently?"

"Okay, valid point — so who have you crushed on?"

"Oh, we're back to those other people...I don't know Buffy-"

"Oh, come on Will, you have to tell me. I tell you everything." Buffy insisted.

"Okay fine — but you have to promise not to freak, okay?"

"Is it really freak-worthy? It can't be worse than me being in love with a vampire right?"

Willow chuckled, "No, I guess not."

"So spill — and don't leave anyone out."

"Fine...apart from Xander, obviously...well, I had a crush on Faith."

"What!" Buffy exclaimed, surprised. She had always thought Willow had hated Faith.

"And Ms. Calendar."

"Really?"

"And Giles."

"Oh my god!"

"And you..."

"Will!"

"But it was only for like three days," Willow hurried to explain, "once I got to know you it passed."

Buffy gave the redhead a sideway glance and pouted, "Gee, thanks." Willow shrugged her shoulders in reply. Buffy looked a little apprehensive and confused. Willow sighed. "Are you freaked?"

Buffy came out of her stupor with a quick shake of her head. "What? God, no. Will, of course not. I'm glad you told me. I guess I was worried for nothing. Seems like you've been crushing on everyone."

"Buffy!"

Buffy giggled and Willow breathed a sigh of relief. I guess I really can tell her everything. "But really, Giles? He's so old." Buffy asked.

Willow had the decency to blush a little in embarrassment as she explained. "But Buffy, he had all those wonderful books and he knew stuff and we could talk about existential things...but it was only for like the first month, after that he became more of a father-figure type. You know, someone you could actually count on."

"I know...well about the counting on thing, not the book thing...Ms. Calendar?"

"Actually, I think that was more of an admiration than a crush though. She was like this really pretty computer scientist."

"Fair enough, Faith?"

"Oh, please...who didn't have a similar reaction to Faith? She was like this cleavage-y slut-bomb..."

Buffy laughed, "Oh my god, Will. You noticed her cleavage?"

Willow glared at Buffy and punched her in the arm. "Owie," Buffy exclaimed but continued laughing.

"Oh, don't pretend that hurt slayer-girl."

"I-aaa, I kinda know what you mean...about Faith."

"Oh, really?"

"Seriously Will...sometimes I didn't know whether to punch her or kiss her."

"Oh gods, are you serious?"

"And I kinda got this vibe that she was thinking the same thing. But then she turned all evil on us...so those, you know, thoughts kinda went away. But I keep thinking; if only the deputy mayor hadn't been skulking in the shadows — I'm pretty sure Faith would still be on our side."

"You think?"

"Yeah...we were getting kinda close...you know, the chosen two. It was working... but anyway... so that's all of 'em?"

"Them? Crushes?" Of Buffy's nod, Willow answered, "Um, yeah."

"So there's no one new? No one you've met since starting college?"

Willow shook her head hesitantly.

Buffy touched Willow's arm and lightly stroked it in a soothing manner. "You know you can tell me everything Will? I mean it, everything. I'm here for you."

"I know." Willow leaned over and hugged Buffy. "Thanks. If and when I figure this out, I'll tell you." They pulled away from the hug.

"So there is something to talk about?"

"Hmm...mmaybe."

"Okay, I can do maybe." Buffy got off the bed, "listen, I'm gonna go and see if Parker's called before we do that costume thing, meet me at my room okay?"

"Sure."

Buffy walked to the door and opened it. At the same moment Tara reached for the door handle from the other side and was pulled in. She stumbled towards Buffy and the slayer caught her. Buffy laughed as Tara pulled away from the accidental embrace, "hey Tara." Tara looked up at the slayer, slightly embarrassed, but she smiled nonetheless. "Oh, hey Buffy. I'm, um, sorry for, um, c-crashing into you."

"Don't worry about it, I'm sorry too. I kinda pulled you in anyway. Well, I'm off, see you guys later."

"Bye Buff!"

"Bye Buffy."

The door closed and Tara walked over to her bed and placed her shoulder bag next to it. She plunked down on the bed, sighing.

"Hey," Willow said from across the room. It was unusual for Tara not to greet her when she came into the room and that usual meant that she was either blind, angry at her, or having a... "rough day?"

Tara lifted her head up and looked over at Willow, "A little yeah, I'm just so tired from last night. After you fell asleep Xander and I watched another movie, well, technically we watched two, since you fell asleep at the beginning of the first one."

"Hey! I watched the first one." Willow argued.

Tara shook her head and laughed, "Really? What was it about?"

Willow frowned as she tried to remember. "Oh, on the first day of his new school, Cameron instantly falls for Bianca, the-"

"Reciting the text on the back cover doesn't count Will."

"Fine..." Willow huffed, "well, I needed my beauty sleep — we're not all naturally gorgeous like some people."

"What people?" Tara questioned. Off the look on Willows face she instantly blushed, "me?"

"Yah!" Willow breathed out quickly and nodded her head.

"Oh," Tara lay back down and looked up at the ceiling with a lazy smile, "oh," she repeated. Willow smiled because she loved making Tara smile — there was a big smile fest that ensued and it made her smile even more.

"So, do you wanna do that thing now?" Willow asked.

"Remind me again," Tara started then yawned, "sorry, what thing?"

"What we talked about last night — we were gonna do it after your class."

"Oh yeah — can we get some mochas afterwards?"

"Well, duh!"

"Duh?"

"Yeah, I used duh, get over it."

***

"How about this one?" Willow asked as she pulled the costume off the rail to show Tara. Buffy stood next to Will and gave the redhead a question look.

"I don't think so," Tara answered and put the costume back.

"Why not?" Willow pouted, "You'd look really good in this." Buffy snickered at Willow's expression.

"The little mermaid, Will?" Tara frowned, as Willow nodded enthusiastically, "Seriously Tara, this costume is so you." Buffy shook her head and walked further down the aisle looking for her own costume.

Tara rolled her eyes, "Reality check Will," she started and dragged Willow away from the revealing costume. Willow glanced back at the skimpy outfit with a sad look. Damn!

"We live on a hell mouth and we're about to go out at night — you want me to wear a skintight costume that gives me the mobility of a snail? That doesn't, um, actually scream staying-alive Tara."

Willow nodded, what Tara said made sense, but damn it all to hell, she wanted to see Tara wearing that bikini. Her eyes suddenly lit up like a light bulb and she bounced on the soles of her shoes. "Oh! I forgot to tell you — the nasties stay away from Halloween, they think it's lame."

"Lame? What do you mean?"

"Vampires, demons, creepy crawly things that come out at night...they don't like Halloween. It's like their one night of the year when they take a break from their evil doing things. It's their Labor Day...or something."

"She's right," Buffy piped up as she rounded the corner. She hadn't found a costume she liked, and was seriously considering her Little Red Riding-hood outfit, again. "Giles said, um, oh! 'Creatures of the night shy away from Halloween, they find it all to much crass.'"

"Really?" Tara wondered, "That's weird. I'd think it would be like the one night of the year when people won't be running away from them — thinking it's just an elaborate costume? The streets would like a f-feeding ground."

"I know, I always did wonder why they take a break, it's not very logical, is it?" Willow wondered and actually scratched her cheek.

"If I don't have to slay, it's all okay." Buffy said, and smiled at her 'clever' rhyme.

"No, but let's just be thankful the dark side of the force isn't into logic, or we'd all be s-screwed."

"The dark side of the force?" Willow smirked. Tara blushed and grinned back at Willow, "I, um, used to watch Star Wars a lot, when I was, um, younger."

"Me too." Willow revealed and giggled. "Xander made me watch it all the time."

"Oh yeah?" Tara smiled. She wasn't surprised at all. Willow and Xander seemed like just the type of people to enjoy theological sci-fi adventures.

"Oh!" Willow shouted and half the store looked her way. She didn't seem to notice, "You should totally be princess Leia." Images of a bronze bikini and chains flittered through Willow's mind and she almost drooled but Tara's voice brought her back to reality. "If you mention a bronze bikini, I'm going to have to slap you."

"What? You don't think that's a good idea?"

"Will!" Tara mock-scolded. "What's with you and me wearing a bikini? Do you know something I don't? You're not trying to set me up or anything are you?"

"Set you up?" Willow frowned. Set you up how? Then, "Oh! No!" Willow shook her head, "No setting you up of any kind."

"No?" Tara looked at Buffy for confirmation who she shook her head.

"Absolutely not," Willow stated.

Tara mock-pouted. "You don't have to be so forceful about it. Am I not setting-up worthy?"

"Of course you are! You're very setting-up worthy. If I didn't want you fo..." Willow squeaked as she caught on what she was saying. "I mean, um...do you want to be set up?" she asked softly.

"Oh...um," Tara didn't really know. Did she want to be set up? She had been looking around lately, noticing other people. But that was it; she was only noticing and not approaching. Maybe getting Willow to set her up with someone would break that proverbial ice.

"I don't know," she admitted, "yes, no...maybe?" She looked up at Willow and caught the redhead looking at her intently before she glanced away. "Oh," Willow breathed, "anyone in particular?"

Tara watched Willow fidgeting with the hem of her shirt, her graceful fingers playing with a loose strand of thread, then the blonde let her eyes travel up Willow's torso settling on her beautiful face. Willow was pouting and Tara smiled sadly. I'm so confused, she thought. She exhaled loudly and shook her head.

Buffy lifted one eyebrow at Tara's reaction. Interesting.

"Not um, really. I haven't really gotten to know many people here because I'm, um, always with you." Tara's half smile made Willow smile back but it disappeared in an instant. "Oh god, Tara I'm so sorry." Willow apologized, "I'm like monopolizing your time, when you could be meeting people...other-"

"No! I want to be with you." Tara quickly assured the redhead.

"Really?"

"Of course, you're my all-time favorite person, how could I not want to be near you?"

"You're right. It's impossible to stay away, I'm irresistible." Willow's toothy grin made Buffy laugh "Pretty much." Tara smiled and nodded her head in agreement.

They walked around the store in a comfortable silence, the two witches content for the same reason, and both oblivious to that fact. Buffy was the only one who knew where Tara and Willow both stood with each other and the thought made her giggle. Willow looked at the slayer, "what are you laughing at?" Buffy just smiled and put her arms around the redhead. "I'll tell ya later."

An outfit caught Buffy's attention and she stopped dead in her tracks, pulling the redhead to a halt in the progress. "Check it out Will!" She pointed at the black and maroon leather/lace assemble that hung on the top rail. "Frilly heck!" Willow exclaimed.

Chapter 3: Demons 'R' Us - Part A - Continued

Postby tinnakaren » Thu Mar 11, 2004 6:16 pm

Tara looked at the outfit and nodded appraisingly. That's kinda sexy.

"Oh Tara, you are never going to believe this but once a Vamp-Willow came to this reality and she wore that exact outfit." Buffy snickered.

"Oh," Tara nodded, but then as the words registered she gasped in shock, "what!" Willow, in that outfit, ohhh- Vamp-Willow!

"Yeah, she was this evil, skanky and kinda g-" Buffy stopped and looked at Willow, then at Tara and back at Willow. "Ohhhhh..."

It all made sense now. When she had said that the vampire's personality had nothing to do with who the person was she'd been grasping at straws or, more accurately, lying. She, of all people, knew a person's personality was the same when they were turned, only more assertive and void of morality. She had wanted to comfort Willow as much as herself but Angel had really burst that bubble with his half-finished comment, only she had chosen to ignore it, for Willow's sake, and with time she had forgotten it. But now she remembered.

"What?" Willow questioned as she saw the light dawn on her friend. Did Buffy know? She had stopped right before saying the g-word. A word that had been swimming in Willow's brain for a long time now, coming up for air once and awhile until she met Tara. Now it sat on the outer rim of the pool and bathed in the blonde's light.

Buffy was about to answer when Tara interrupted, "Um, Vamp-Willow?" she pleaded with her eyes. Please, tell me.

Willow sighed, "It was a spell me and-" Willow frowned, "Anya did." She spat out the name like it was poison. "It went wrong — surprise — and it brought forth a vampire version of me from another reality."

"Wow, and you had to fight her?"

"Yes, sort of, not exactly...she came after me and well, she sort of came onto me slash attacked me, it was a little disturbing but then," Willow looked over at Buffy, who smiled in reassurance, "I, um, shot her with a tranquilizer gun and we sent her back to her world."

"Yeah, but not until after you and her switched outfits and you helped save the Bronze." Buffy added.

"You wore that outfit?" Tara asked the redhead. She was trying to listen to the story but Willow and Willow in leather kept distracting her.

Willow smiled mournfully and nodded. "It was awful Tara. She didn't even have any underwear on," she revealed and shuddered.

Oh my! Tara chuckled but quickly clamped her hand over her mouth.

"Are you laughing at me?" Willow pouted. Tara quickly shook her head from left to right, pursing her lips together to stop from laughing. Her eyes sparkled merrily making all her efforts in vain.

Willow scolded Tara, "No laughing missy, it was horrible!" Tara nodded her head in agreement, she was sure it had been quite awful for Willow, didn't stop her from snorting though. "Hey!" Willow insisted and poked Tara in the stomach. That did it. Tara burst out laughing and had to grab Willow's shoulders to keep herself from falling on the floor. Willow caught the blonde witch with her arms and helped keeping her upright. She looked over at Buffy for help. The slayer was turned away from her, assumingly looking at another costume but Willow noticed the slayer's shoulders shaking. "Are you laughing too?"

Buffy didn't turn around but she nodded her head slowly. Willow sighed and shook her head. Tara was still laughing in front of the redhead and she was trying to catch her breath. "You're not supposed to make fun of me," Willow argued vainly and wrapped her arms around the blonde pulling her closer. Tara rested her head in the crook of Willow's neck and nodded as she giggled, "sorry." Willow could feel Tara smile against her skin and she shivered at the sensation. "It's okay, now that I think about it...it is kinda humorous." Tara squeezed Willow closer to her, "it really, really is...at least you, um, didn't see anything, you haven't, you know, seen b-before."

"Tara!" Willow was shocked, and tried to push Tara away from her so she could properly scold her but Tara held on tightly as she laughed, "you are so bad," Willow whispered and Tara nodded in agreement.

Buffy had finally composed herself and turned around to the sight of Willow and Tara laughing and whispering to each other while they embraced. She smiled at the sight. Willow had fallen hard and the thought didn't bother her one bit. Which kind of bothered her. She was a little bothered that it didn't bother her, how insane was that? She knew it had to do with Tara and what an incredible person she was. If Willow had announced she was gay just like that, without any prior indication, Buffy probably would have been a little rattled at first, but with Willow and Tara she had followed the progression of their relationship, seen the looks and the little touches. It was incredibly cute and Buffy just hoped they'd find each other soon.

"So..." Buffy said and Willow and Tara pulled away from their hug. "We've found Willow's costume, what about you Tara?"

"I am not wearing that costume," Willow insisted.

"Oh, you so are." Buffy said and left no room for argument.

"But-" Willow started but the slayer resolve stopped her. She nodded dumbly, "alright."

Buffy grinned in victory. "Yay, that just leaves Tara then...lets find you something."

They scoured every aisle for the right outfit.

"This one?" Willow piped up after a long moment of browsing.

Tara smiled and nodded. "It's perfect."

"Why is it perfect?" Buffy asked but Willow just grinned and winked at the slayer. "Will, why is it perfect?" she repeated.

Tara and Willow went up to the cash register to pay for the costumes while Buffy browsed around some more. A voice from the cash register got her attention and she walked across one aisle to look over where the witches were standing.

"Hey, Tara right?" A guy about their age asked as he approached the blonde.

Tara looked up and smiled when she recognized the guy. "Oh, hey Mr. Mears." Willow glared at the guy before moving away from the counter towards Buffy.

"Call me Warren, we're not in the class room right now." Tara nodded and smiled again. The clerk handed her the costume and her change, "Have a good day Miss."

"Thank you. You too." She offered and pocketed her change.

"So, going to a party tonight?" Warren asked and indicated Tara's costume. "Oh, um, yes. I'm going with some friends." Tara scanned around for her friends and found them down one of the aisles discreetly following the conversation. She smiled and waved Willow and Buffy over.

"Willow, this is Mr. Mears, um, I mean Warren." She introduced as Willow approached them. "Hey!" Willow said with forced enthusiasm and a false smile. "And um," Tara pointed at Buffy, "...this is Buffy." The slayer flashed her trademark smile and waved.

"Hey," Warren acknowledged then turned back to Tara. "So, I was wondering, now that the seminar is almost over, if you'd like to go out for coffee or something, sometime?"

Buffy looked at Willow with trepidation. She could actually hear when Willow's heart skipped a beat as the redhead waited anxiously for Tara's hopefully negative reply. Who is this guy? And why is he hitting on my Tara? Willow thought.

"Oh, uh, like a date?" Tara had a shocked expression on her face. She couldn't believe she was being asked out on a date.

"Yeah, I guess so." Warren nodded and gave her a wink and a smile, which reminded Willow of a leering, slithering snake just waiting to unhinge its jaw and capturing its prey. Say no, say no, say no... Willow chanted.

"Oh," Tara glanced back and forth between Warren and Willow until settling her gaze on Willow. Willow was glaring at Warren like she wanted to rip his head off. Not a good sign. "I don't know Warren-"

"Hey, maybe I can just call you sometime and we'll see?" Warren interrupted.

"Oh, um, okay." Tara nodded dumbly.

"Great, bye Tara." Warren said and walked away, "oh and you too," he added and nodded towards Willow and Buffy before disappearing out the door.

"Who is that guy?" Willow asked when the snake was gone.

"He, um, teaches that web design seminar you told me to check out."

Oh great. I'm the reason that snake is circling my Tara. Willow grunted in frustration, "Are you gonna go out with him?"

"Um, I don't know. Do you think I should go out with him?"

No! Willow screamed in her head but she didn't say anything. Buffy came to the rescue, "Is he a nice guy? Do you like him?"

"I don't really know him, he seems like an okay guy. He's a good teacher, there's just something about him, that um...doesn't feel right."

"Well, there you go." Willow said quickly and grinned. YES! "You should always trust your instinct Tara, it's there for a reason."

"Really? Even though my instinct told me to run, flee, skedaddle when I first met you?"

"It did?" Willow's smile faltered. "That's not good."

"No, actually it told me to hug you and never let go." Willow's grin came back full force and she grabbed Tara's hand and pulled her towards the exit. "I like that."

***

The three evil-fighters headed over to the Espresso Pump for some caffeinated goodness before they had to get ready for the party. Just as they were about to reach the open-aired coffee house Tara heard her name being called and she looked around. Willow scowled at the blonde guy jogging towards them. Is every guy in Sunnydale chasing Tara now?

"Hey James," Tara said as he came to a stop in front of her. "Hey," he greeted her with a smile, then nodded towards Buffy and Willow, "hey, what's up?"

"What's up?" Buffy replied and Willow nodded tersely.

"Anyway, I tried to call you earlier," James said to Tara, "to see when we could meet up?"

"Oh r-right, um..." She turned to Willow and Buffy, "You guys go ahead, I'll just be a minute."

Willow nodded, "okay," and she and Buffy started towards the coffee house.

Buffy and Willow walked into the almost full Espresso Pump. Buffy noticing an empty table to her left pointed her friend in that direction. "Will, table, empty...get it." She gently nudged Willow towards the table, and walked towards the long line of people waiting to place their orders.

"Buffy, I think we need to work on your sentence structuring."

Buffy glared at the redhead who smirked in response as she started walking backwards towards the empty table.

"Mocha?" The slayer asked as she got in line.

"Yes, please." The redhead responded then turned and power-walked towards the table before anyone else got it.

Few minutes later Buffy approached the table with two Mocha cups, one in each hand, and a proud smile on her face. "Mocha goodness has arrived."

She took a seat opposite the hacker who thanked her for her drink before sampling the goodness. "Yumm." The slayer couldn't agree more.

Buffy noticed Willow's less than inconspicuous spying on Tara outside the coffee house and smirked. Now's as good as time as any, she thought. But how to start?

She launched into talks about last night's patrol, Giles' sombrero hat and how she thought he desperately needed to look for a job and then slowly she led the conversation to the available hotties in and around the Espresso Pump.

"Uhmm, Will...don't look now but a total hottie is checking you out at two o'clock."

"What?" Willow's head whipped around to the left to check out this hottie.

"I said 'don't look' Will." Buffy hissed.

"Uh-huh, I heard ya." Willow mumbled as she watched the young man four tables over give her a wink and a smile before going back to read his paper. She tried smiling back but it came out a little frown-y. He's not bad looking - but a hottie? I think emphatically not. Willow turned back and took a sip of her mocha. What is my definition of a hottie anyway?

"...a hottie like that."

"What?" Willow had been lost in thought and had missed what Buffy had said.

"I said: I wouldn't mind being stranded on a desert island with a hottie like that." Buffy repeated, trying to catch her friend's attention.

"Really?" Willow looked quickly back at the guy then turned back to Buffy. "He's alright."

"You don't think he's hot?" Buffy asked.

"Not my type I guess." Willow shrugged her shoulders and took another long sip.

"Well, what, or should I say who, is your type then? Really, I wanna know. Ever since you gave up on Xander you've been less than forthcoming concerning your love life - or, no offense Will, the lack there of."

"Didn't we already have this discussion today?" Willow raised one eyebrow at Buffy who had the decency to at least look slightly apologetic as the redhead finished swallowing and placing her cup on the table. Willow licked her lips to clean them of any residue mocha before grinning at the slayer. "It's okay."

Buffy grinned back and then asked, "So?"

"My type?" Buffy nodded. "Uhmm, I haven't really given it much thought Buff. I always figured my type would be whomever I was in love with...or at least crushing on."

"Really? So if you close your eyes right now..." Buffy gestured for Willow to do so. "Good. And picture yourself on a deserted island. It's warm, the sun is up, you're lying on the beach, white sand, clear ocean...sipping on Pina coladas."

Willow had to giggle at that. Where on earth would you find Pina coladas on a deserted island? But she was enjoying the image.

"And let's say someone is lying next to you..." Buffy paused for a minute. A slow smile started spreading over Willow's face. "Who is it?"

Willow thought for a moment before answering. "I... ah, I don't know." There was someone there, but her brain wouldn't let her make the obvious connection, so his or her features were blurred.

"Someone like... Brad Pitt?"

Willow laughed. "Uhmm, no." But blonde hair started appearing on the person next to her.

"Russell Crowe?"

"God, no." Willow frowned. They'd have to have blue eyes like his, but beautiful blue eyes. Like sparkling sapphires.

"Keanu Reeves?" Willow shook her head as she shuddered. Not even close. His lips are too thin. Full, round, pouty lips sprang to mind and Willow smiled again.

"Someone like..." Buffy grinned before continuing, "Tara?"

"Oh yeah..." Willow breathed out.

Buffy grinned mischievously. If she could, she would pat herself on the back right now - but that wouldn't be very cool. There were hotties around after all.

But Willow, realizing what she had said, started backpedaling, "I mean no. Tara? What? Uhmm...no."

"I knew it!" Buffy exclaimed.

"What?" Willow sat up straight in her seat. Could it be? Sure, she thought Tara was beautiful, and amazing and... but it was just a tiny crush, right?

"You like her!"

"I do?"

Buffy rolled her eyes at her oblivious friend. "You are completely jonesing for her."

"I am?"

"It's so obvious Willow."

"It is?"

" Everyone knows."

"They do?"

"You love her." Buffy said softly.

"I do?" Willow whispered.

Her brain finally kicked in and made all the right connections. Memories of Tara flooded her mind: her lopsided smile which would brighten even her worst days - her laugh, her quirky sense of humor, her insane but adorably cute little stories which made Willow laugh herself silly, her eyes... she would get lost in those eyes. Her tummy flip-flopped as she sat and she could have sworn there were tiny people doing somersaults inside it.

"Oh my god Buffy, you're right!" Willow's eyes widened at the realization. "I do, I do love her. " Willow slunk down in her seat. "Wow." I love Tara.

Buffy smiled. She was happy for her friend. Tara was perfect for the redhead and the fact that she was sure the blonde loved Willow just as much was even better.

"Yeah Will, wow."

"What's wow?" Buffy and Willow both looked up at the sound of Tara's voice. "Tara!" Willow exclaimed and sat up as the subject of their discussion just walked in. Tara smiled and placed her hands on Willow's shoulders. "Yup, just me," she squeezed Willow's shoulder and leaned closer to give her a quick backwards hug. "So, what were you talking about?"

Buffy grinned and Willow smiled brightly up at Tara, "hmmm, mocha?" she said, and handed her still warm cup to Tara.

"No really, what were you talking about?"

***

After a masterful avoidance tactic by Willow they all headed to the dorms to change for the party. It took Willow some time getting used to being around Tara, knowing full well what she felt for her. She was sure it was written all over her face; sure that Tara would pick up on it right away. Having a tiny crush on her roommate was one thing; being in love with her was something completely different, and she wasn't sure how to act around the blonde anymore. These thoughts occupied Willow's mind the rest of the evening until they went to the party, and things went haywire from there.

This Halloween hadn't turned out as the Scoobies had suspected. As soon as they stepped inside the frat house, their personal fears had been magnified and almost separated them from each other. Only Willow and Tara were still together, the rest were left to fend off their own demons alone. Willow had stormed out the front room after a nasty argument with Buffy, and Tara had smiled sadly at Buffy and followed Willow.

"Can you believe her? Who does she think she is?" Willow stormed back and forth in the little room she and Tara were in seething in rage. "She's not the boss of me, you know."

"I know," Tara nodded in agreement. "I think she's just, um, a little scared Will. This house...there's something wrong."

Willow nodded as she continued pacing. "'Your spells are only 50/50 Willow'...stupid Buffy," she mumbled, "wait, what's wrong with the house?"

"Can't you feel it?" Tara asked as she glanced around the room they were in. It looked harmless enough, but there was an ominous presence in the air, which left Tara feeling less than safe.

"What?"

Tara looked at Willow. "Fear. It's everywhere."

"Well, this is supposed to be a scary house, and we are on the hellmouth."

"I know, but it's more than that. Plastic skeletons coming alive, toy spiders crawling on people..."

"Eugh! Don't remind me." Willow stopped pacing and sat down on the table in the center of the room. "But you're right, I do feel something. We really should get out of here."

"Yes."

"So should we do that spell I was talking about?"

"Yes, I think that's a good idea," Tara said and sat next to Willow, "Aradia should be able to help." Willow nodded and moved on the table so she was sitting Indian style opposite Tara who took the same position.

"You need to relax Will, clear your mind. This won't work otherwise."

"I'm perfectly relaxed Tara," Willow snapped but immediately regretted it. "I'm sorry Tara...I'm so not relaxed."

"It's okay. Here, take my hands and breathe with me, like this."

Tara led Willow into a mediated state until they started the spell. It worked perfectly and one green light and one blue light appeared before their eyes.

"It worked!" Willow exclaimed, "I mean, um, of course it worked." Willow jumped off the table and Tara follow suit. The lights hovered in front of them waiting instructions. "Right, instructions?" Tara nodded and said to the lights, "lead us to Buffy and Xander." The lights circled one another and bobbed up and down until the blue light made a beeline out the door, into the hallway. Tara made to follow but Willow's voice stopped her, "um, Tara."

Willow's green light started to multiply and soon the lights started circling her and banging into her, "Hey!" Willow twirled around and batted her hands in the air to try to keep the lights away. "Willow!" Tara ran towards the redhead. "Get them off Tara, please!" Willow started shaking and Tara quickly pulled her down, away from the swarms of lights. They tried to scramble away but the lights followed. "Willow it's not real — I think, I think it's your fear. It's m-magnifying. You have to control it."

"Fear of what Tara? Control what?"

"Your magic."

"I'm...I'm not, I'm not a-afraid Tara."

"Willow, it's okay. You've been doing magic for less than two years, and already you're so powerful. It's okay to be afraid. I am too sometimes, and I've been doing this for all of my life."

"Really?"

Tara nodded, and Willow threw her arms around the witch and hugged her. The lights whizzed out of existence and a calm settled over Willow. They embraced for a moment until Willow jumped, "Owie."

"What?" Tara pulled out of the embrace. "Something stung me," Willow said and touched one of her shoulders, then, "Oh my god, Tara!" she pushed the blonde away from her in a moment of panic. Tara watched Willow in confusion, and then she looked down. "Oh no," Tara stared down at her hands. They were dark red and shiny, and black veins pulsed visible under her skin. Long razor-sharp nails extended from her fingers and one was covered in blood. "Oh goddess, no, no, no..." She scrambled to her feet and ran out the door.

Wow. Great update. It is quite a shock Buffy knows before Willow about her feelings for Tara. Buffy is usually so clueless.

I love your spin on Fear, and I know Willow will comfort Tara just as Tara comforts Willow.

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.

Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Chapter 3: Demons 'R' Us - Part B

Postby tinnakaren » Sun Mar 14, 2004 12:02 pm

Here's the conclusion of Chapter 3, which just so happens to be Part B. No cliffhangers this time - phooey on cliffhangers - they're evil and keep you on the edge of your seat - and who wants that?

Chapter 3: Demons 'R' Us - Part B

Tara ran down the hallway looking for a way out but every door she passed was missing a handle. She ran past a mirror and a sideway glance made her scream in horror. A demon stood right in front of her and growled at her. Its red and shiny skin glistened in the overhead lights making it look like it was compiled of blood. Tara stumbled backwards and crashed into the wall as the demon vanished from sight.

Willow stared dumbfounded at the open door, her breaths coming in quick bursts. Oh my god, what in the heck was that? She had been hugging Tara but when she pulled out a demon was staring back at her. A loud growl and a crash from outside made her jump and she got to her feet and ran towards the noise like any insane person would. At the end of the hall the demon was huddled on the floor, quietly growling. Willow quietly made her way closer to the demon, cursing her chosen action. What are you doing Rosenberg? Hello! There's a demon right in front of you. But her body paid no attention to her mind. She reached the demon and stood in front of it, backing as close as she could to the opposite wall until she was pressed against it. "Where's Tara?" She intended it to sound like a demand but it came out as a whisper. Oh god... Tears streamed down her face and the lump in her throat made it hard to breathe. "What did you do..." The demon looked up at her and they made eye contact. She was expecting blood red or black eyes but the eyes that looked back at her were gentle and soothing, sky-blue and full of unshed tears. She gasped in shock and fell down to her knees. "Tara?"

Tara shook as she heard Willow's voice calling her. The tears finally shed with abandon and she couldn't contain the cries within her anymore.

Oh my god, this is Tara, Willow thought and crossed the distance between her and Tara on all fours. She stopped when her forehead was less than an inch away from Tara's and sat back on her heels. She slowly raised her right hand and placed it on Tara's drawn up knee. "Tara? Baby? Are you...are you okay?" Okay? What kind of a stupid question is that? Willow groaned. Obviously Tara wasn't okay.

The fearful witch didn't respond. She just huddled closer, drawing her knees even higher up and shielding her face with her arms. Willow tried again, "Tara, please..." She placed her hand over Tara's arm and pulled on it gently but as soon she did Tara snarled and pushed her away. Willow fell back on her elbows and looked up at Tara's demon features for the first time. "Don't touch me!" Tara warned but it came out as a growl and Willow scrambled back in fright. Tara visibly shuddered and she looked down in shame. I'm so sorry Willow, she made eye contact and Willow could see the sorrow in her eyes but then it was gone and Tara up and ran away. "Tara?" Willow whispered as she watched the women she loved run away from her. "Tara!" she yelled but it was too late. She was gone.

***

Willow sat in Giles' couch and stared at the blonde witch sitting in the chair in front of her. Her arms were crossed over her chest and she studied Tara warily. The blonde's shoulders were hunched and her head was ducked low as she hid behind her hair. She picked at the chocolate bar in her hand, occasionally putting a small morsel in her mouth.

After Giles and Anya had burst into the big attic and Buffy had squished the demon — with her sneakers of all things — they had all headed over to Giles' apartment for a post-battle get-together. Tara had not looked at Willow at all since she ran away from her in the hallway, and she had avoided any confrontation with a duck of her head and a quiet "p-please don't" which broke Willow's heart every time she heard it.

But the redhead couldn't take it anymore. She had cried and screamed out her confusion in the hallway but when the tears stopped flowing, she finally got off the floor and tried to find her friends, her mind had gone to work. And the answer was now clear. She stood up and walked swiftly around the coffee table to where Tara was sitting. Willow grabbed one of Tara's hands and pulled her up, "I need to talk to you," she said and left no room for arguments. She pulled Tara with her through the living room and kitchen areas and into the bathroom. She slammed the door shut.

Tara sat down at the rim of the bathtub and looked down at the floor as she waited for the onslaught. She felt dejected and ashamed and she was sure her appearance broadcasted those feelings for Willow to see. She couldn't bear to acknowledge the look of betrayal and disgust in Willow's face now that her roommate knew. She was used to it, everyone in her hometown would give her that look, when they actually bothered giving her the time of day. Her mother was the only person who had looked at her with love and kindness and she sometimes saw that look reflected on Willow's face. That look made her happier than she ever thought she could be again, and now it was gone. So she waited.

Willow took a deep breath and tried to center herself. Her mind was swarming with thoughts and ideas, theories and speculations and she was having a hard time actually controlling them long enough to say what she needed to say. She looked at the only person that had ever succeeded in making her feel absolutely calm and drew strength from the sight.

"Y-you think you're a demon?" Willow finally got out and she had to steady herself against the sink.

Tara let out a quiet sob as she answered, "I d-don't think t-that Willow." Willow let out a sigh of relief. "I am a d-demon."

"What?" Willow breathed out in disbelief. That's impossible.

"I am a d-de...demon." Tara cried out. She slid down on the floor and buried her head in her hands as the sobs wracked her body. Willow's reaction was instinct and she slid down on the floor next to her love.

"No, you're not." Willow protested as she gathered Tara in her arms. Tara nodded her head against Willow's chest in argument but clung to her tightly, soaking up the comfort.

"No, I don't believe it Tara. You can't be a demon because I..." I love you Willow said but the words failed to move from her heart to her vocal cords, instead she said, "well you just can't Tara. There's not an evil bone in your body. You being a demon is like, like, like Buffy sleeping with, I don't know, Spike or, or me getting addicted to drugs or dark magic or something. It's cosmically wrong Tara, and no way in hell is any deity going to allow that."

Tara sobs had quieted down and she was now occasionally sniffling as she listened to Willows words. She was amazed that the redhead was still here, holding her, instead of running the other way. I wish that were true Willow, she thought and hated having to prove the redhead wrong. "I'm n-not..." she started then sniffled twice.

"You're not what baby?" Willow whispered as she softly stroked hair. "I'm n-not a demon y-"

"I know you're not!" Willow interrupted.

Tara sighed and pulled herself away from Willow. She brought one hand up and dried her eyes before focusing on the redhead. "Willow, p-please just listen." Willow started to protest but Tara put two fingers over Willow's lips to silence her, "please." Willow nodded. "I'm not a demon yet. But I will be, when I b-become t-twenty."

Willow furrowed her brows, "that's ridiculous."

Tara raised an eyebrow in response, "what?"

"You don't just become a demon. Either you're born with it or you're cursed or you accept a..." Willow brought up her hands and made quotation marks with her fingers, "'gift' from another demon which gives you demonic powers." Willow explained.

Tara smiled sadly. Willow was really trying and it lightened her to no end but it was of no use. "I am born with it."

Willow's face was crestfallen, "you can't," she whispered and a lone tear slid down her cheek. Tara sniffled and wiped the tear softly from Willow's face. "My m-mother, she had it. All of the w-women in my family had it. It's um, it's where the magic comes f-from."

"Oh," Willow didn't know what else to say. It was like the air had been sucked from her body and she felt dizzy and nauseous from the sensation. She placed her hands on the cool tile floor and tried to take deep breaths but her throat was constricted and she had to force the air in, which caused her to wheeze from the effort.

"Will?" Tara thought Willow might be getting an asthma attack from the sounds she was making.

"I'm okay," Willow squeaked. "I just need some, um some water."

"I'll get it." Tara jumped on her feet and went to the sink. She dumped Giles toothbrush out of the cup above the sink and filled it with cold water. "Here," she said as she kneeled in front of Willow and offered her the cup.

Willow gulped the water down in one breath then slammed the empty cup down on the floor. Tara's a demon. It felt wrong to think it, let alone believe it. She couldn't. There was no way the woman kneeling before her was a demon. A demon wouldn't jump up to get her water, or look at her with those beautiful eyes or, Willow looked down at her arm and smiled, or stroke her arm up and down in a soothing gesture. These were not demonic traits; these were human traits - Tara-traits.

And what does she mean that's where the magic comes from? Tara's magic is Wiccan magic, light magic. There's nothing dark or evil about it, and it's gotta be impossible for a demon to access those powers, hasn't it? The golden flecks in Willow's eyes sparkled as the thoughts whizzed around in her brain. Her eyes opened wide in realization, "Ah-ha!" she exclaimed.

"Excuse me?" Tara frowned.

Willow smiled, "I'm sorry, I just mean...ah-ha!" she repeated and brought one finger up for emphasis. "You are so not evil!" Willow scrambled to her feet and pulled Tara up with her, "and I'll prove it."

She yanked the bathroom open with force and stormed out dragging a stumbling Tara with her in the process. "Giles!" Willow yelled and made her way into the living room.

The Scoobies were still sitting around the coffee table. Buffy had a mountain of Tootsie-rolls in front of her and was eating them one by one, sharing the occasional candy with Anya. Xander held his stomach as he groaned from sugar-overload and Giles sat in the armchair reading a book. As Willow yelled he jumped up from his seat and nearly dropped the aged book to the floor but caught it just in time. "Yes Willow?"

Willow stomped into the living room and faced the Scoobies. "Tara thinks she's a demon." She almost laughed, so much for segue.

"What!" Buffy jumped up and grabbed Mr. Pointy from the coffee table.

"Whoa!" Willow yelled. "There will be no attacking Tara, you come near her and you'll have to go through me first. And don't think I can't protect myself. I can levitate your ass to the next century!"

"No, Will...I just..." Buffy tossed her stake on the couch. "I would never-" Buffy took a few steps back as she noticed the glare Willow was giving her. "It was just...I was...dammit Will, I hear demon I jump. You know I love Tara. We all do...right?"

The two males in the room nodded their heads with enthusiasm, but Anya just shrugged, "eh, I don't really know her." She glanced at Tara, "She's doesn't talk much." Tara blushed and moved a little behind Willow in embarrassment. Willow moved her glare from Buffy to Anya. "What?"

"Ah, yes...well. You were saying Willow?" Giles interrupted.

"Oh, right." She moved her attention slowly from Anya to Giles, sending the ex-demon a few dozen glares of death before settling on Giles. "Well, Tara thinks she'll become a demon when she's twenty and I don't believe it's possible, and I need you to prove me right."

Giles sat back down. "I see."

Buffy stared dumbfounded at Tara. When she found her voice again she said the only thing on her mind, "You're not a demon."

Willow smiled and glanced back at Tara, "told ya."

"N-no, but I am. Or I w-will be..." she trailed off. She hated being the center of attention and this was certainly turning out to be such an occasion.

Giles gestured to the pillows placed next to the coffee table, which were used as sitting areas for Scoobie meetings. "Please, sit down." Willow dropped down on the floor and pulled Tara with her. They wiggled a little on the big pillows until they were comfortable then looked up Giles.

"Well, I must say, this is quite unexpected Tara, wha-"

"It's a lie!" Willow insisted.

"Yes, of course." Giles nodded in acquiescence. "Tara, please tell us, what makes you think you'll become a demon?" He smiled softly to the blonde witch and encouraged her to speak up. Tara shifted nervously in front of the five pairs of eyes staring at her. She looked down on her and Willow's still interlaced fingers and took a deep breath. Then she told them her horrible family secret, which had plagued the existence of the Maclay women for centuries.

Anya after having interrupted once during Tara's revelation had refrained some speaking with the not so gentle encouragements from the slayer. Her ankle still hurt from that last kick. But as Tara finished her story she could no longer hold her tongue. "That's insane! And you actually believe that crap?"

Willow had to smirk at that. She didn't necessarily like Anya — more like despised her with fiery passion — but she had to agree with the ex-demon's exclamation. It was insane.

"But I um, why.. um, yes?" Tara hesitated.

"Tara, I have to say that I have never heard of this situation before. Demon blood in human heritage is not rare, I'll admit that, but I've never heard of the demon manifesting itself at a certain age, or only affecting one sex." Giles quickly looked up at Anya for confirmation. She nodded abruptly so he continued. "The demon blood gets into the genes so any offspring would be affected, male or female, it doesn't matter."

"But my m-mom, she'd...I mean dad w-would...she wouldn't lie t-to me." Tara whispered.

"Well obviously your mother was lied to as well. Did you even see the demon?" Anya asked.

Tara shook her head as a deep shudder ran through her body. "There was a r-room...my d-dad would t-take her there, b-before it um, happened."

Willow listened as Tara stammered her way through every answer and it made her regret having confronted Tara with this, hearing every ounce of pain in her voice . She scooted closer and released her right hand from Tara's left only to replace it with her left hand. She brought her right hand to Tara's lower back and moved it in slow circles. Tara squeezed their hands together as a silent thank you.

Anya frowned at the awkward silence the settled over the group. "Why has everyone stopped talking? It's very uncomfortable, so please stop it. Or un-stop it." The silence was broken by four synchronized sighs then Giles took the floor. "Tara, I don't really know what else to say. But whatever the truth may be, I promise we'll all help you through it. We'll research and, what are you, eighteen now?"

Tara nodded, "But um, I'm closer to nineteen actually."

"Well, that still gives us a year, at least. That's plenty of time find a cure if need be."

"What's all this about research? Hello! She's not a demon!" Willow almost shouted.

Tara tugged on her arm, "Will, I-"

"No Tara, you're not." Willow insisted. She looked at the non-active watcher, "Giles, demons can't do white magic right? Because they're all dark and evil with the evil demonic powers that are dark and evil?"

"Of course not. Creatures of the night can't touch magic based in light."

"Well!" Willow said and her hand movements clearly emphasized the 'ta-da' sound of her voice.

Giles frowned, and so did everyone else in the room except Anya who just rolled her eyes at the obviousness of the situation.

"Tara's magic is all light and goodness of the very, very, very white variety."

Xander chuckled and leaned over to Buffy, "try saying that ten times fast."

"Xander!" Willow groaned and glared at her friend. Xander smiled sheepishly and leaned back, "sorry."

"Well that could be because the demon hasn't manifested itself, and Tara, you do come from a long line of witches right?" Giles asked and Tara nodded. Willow frowned, "But Tara said that's where the magic comes from, from the demon," Willow turned her head and leaned closer to Tara, "right baby?" Again Tara nodded. Willow smiled and focused on Giles again, "so that's impossible, right?"

"I..." Giles shrugged his shoulders.

"You're shrugging your shoulders?" Buffy asked with a shocked expression. "Mr. Always has something to say is shrugging his shoulders?"

"Do shut up Buffy." Giles glared at the slayer who lifted her hands in surrender, "I'm just saying..."

"Oh!" Willow suddenly exclaimed, "Giles, I need a paper and a pen. Two pens, if you have them...better make it three, and in different colors too."

Giles sighed and stood up, "what do you need these for?" he asked as he made his way over to his desk.

Willow frowned, "I'm going to make a list of course."

Giles nodded and smiled, "of course."

Willow bounced on her pillow in excitement; she loved making a list. Especially when the result of said list proved her right. Tara couldn't keep the grin off her face despite the situation she was in. Willow was too adorable for words. She leaned closer to Willow and whispered, "you're cute when you're being all smart." Willow stopped bouncing immediately, and she felt her heart speed up exponentially. She worried it was going to fly out off her chest at any moment and she automatically placed one hand over her heart in a half-baked attempt to prevent that from happening. She looked at Tara sporting her half-smile and she thought she could feel the pressure under her palm actually increasing. Wow, so this is what being in love feels like? "Really?" she whispered back and Tara slowly nodded. Willow smiled brightly in reply. Is this flirting? It feels like we're flirting... "Well, you're cute all the time," Willow felt herself blush hotly at the admission. Tara's surprised but happy reaction didn't go unnoticed by the redhead who silently cheered. Yay me! I made her happy! "You t-think so?" It was Willow's turn to slowly nod as she found herself leaning closer to the blonde, her eyes locked on Tara's lips, which looked irresistible to the redhead. She wanted to run her fingers over those lips, oh hell, who was she kidding, she wanted to run her tongue all over...

"Here's your paper Willow." Giles said and dropped a notebook in front of the redhead. Willow blinked, then blinked again and found herself face to face with Tara, only a few inches separating them. "Um..." She cleared her throat and backed away quickly, "thanks."

"I could only find you two different colored pens," Giles explained as he handed her the two ballpoint pens he had in his hand. "Unless you want a high-lighter, because I have one of those as well."

Willow accepted the black and blue pens and shook her head, "no, this is fine."

Tara was still in the same position she had been a few seconds ago, still looking at Willow and still wondering what was happening, or what was about to happen if Giles hadn't interrupted. Did she want to kiss me? Tara went over the scenario in her head and giving the lack of personal experience she had in these matters - her only source of reference being books and movies and television shows — she wasn't quite sure what to make of it. She remembered reading about a similar situation in that one book, and then there was that movie she watched and in both the characters ended up... Oh my stars! She was going to kiss me. Tara felt herself blushing uncontrollable and she shifted in her seat when the warmth spreading through her body got too unbearable. She eyed the empty glass on the coffee table and had almost started to transmute water from air through magic when she caught herself and quickly stood up. "I'm g-gonna get some more w-water."

Willow looked up at her and gave her a small smile, then followed her with her eyes as the blonde made her way to the kitchen. I'm an idiot. She turned her attention back to the list she was making. She scribbled a few more notes, switched pens, and wrote some more, switched pens again, wrote even more then stopped with a final exclamation point. She frowned, maybe one more exclamation point. There. "Okay I'm done." Willow said and handed her list over to Giles.

The watcher looked down at the paper in his hand and had to smile. Willow really was the best researcher in the group. Even he had to step down for that title. He knew where to look, but Willow was a master in making all the right connections. "Well?"

"I dare say you might be right." Giles answered. "I am right," Willow corrected him. Buffy glanced back and forth from her watcher to her best friend. "Right about what?" she asked as she snatched the notebook from Giles. She looked over what Willow had written. "Oh...um, no, I thought I had it but I'm lost. What does this mean?"

Anya swiped the notebook from the slayer, "hey!" Buffy protested and made to grab it again but Anya pushed her hands away. She skimmed over Willow's notes, "uh-huh, uh-huh, well now that's never going to happen, uh-huh, um...seems about right. Which is what I've been saying from minute one mind you." Anya noticed Tara making her way back to the living room. "Tara, I hate to burst your demon bubble, but there's no way in hell, and I know hell — been there many times, in fact there was this one time when-"

"Anya?" Xander interrupted. The ex-demon glared at him, "no one will listen to my stories."

"No, we want too, it's just...you were about to tell Tara something, and it sounded important."

"It did? Well, of course it did. Xander, don't be an idiot. Where was I?" Anya searched through her fairly new memory bank for a moment, "oh, right. There's no way in hell that you can be a demon."

Tara sat back down next to Willow and looked up at the ex-demon. "Oh."

"That's it?" Buffy asked. "You've been a demon for a millennia and that's all you have to say?"

"Well, no. I could tell you that there's no chance for a person born with demon blood to practice light magic, or that a demon doesn't just lie dormant for twenty years, a demon needs evil to survive; blood, violence, mayhem and it will seek it at least once a month — you know, like werewolves. I don't know you Tara but you don't look like a person who would go out and kill innocent people once a month."

Tara blanched and grabbed Willow's hand to steady herself.

"And this whole thing about the demon only passing on to the women in the family: Genetically impossible. It actually sounds a lot like the asinine stories I heard during the witch trials. Prejudicial Christians would claim those sweet earth-loving Wiccans to be evil and demons and burn them at the stake. And if those witches had children they'd be called half-demons and the name would stick with them, and their family. I tell ya, I got some serious business during those times."

Anya turned to the slayer and glared at her, "And that Buffy is something that I could have said, but it wasn't necessary because 'Tara, there's no way in hell you're a demon' covered it just fine!" She leaned back on the couch with a grunt and crossed her arms, or at least tried to but the really thick bunny costume was making it impossible. "Stupid bunnies," she mumbled.

Tara stared dumbfounded at Anya during her entire speech. She couldn't and wouldn't believe it. Her mother would have known if she wasn't a demon and she would have told her. Tara's mother had been subjected to ruthless 'treatment' as her father called it one day out of the month, every month. It's not true. Tara herself had been the subject to only an ounce of that treatment after her mother died whenever her father would accuse her of doing magic. It made her heart ache just thinking about it and to now face up to the idea that it had all been a lie...

"Tara?" Willow said for the forth time and Tara finally looked away from Anya. Tears ran down her face as she looked into Willow's comforting eyes. "Are you okay?" Willow whispered and Tara shook her head, swallowing the lump in her throat. "I have to, I have to g-go." She slowly got up and looked around the room like she was lost. She shuffled her way to the front door and quietly opened it and slipped out. Everyone in the room stared at the closed door with a sad smile. "I should go after her," Willow said and got up, "but first..." she walked around the coffee table and stood in front of Anya. "Stand up."

"No, I'm sitting here." Anya huffed.

"Anya, just freakin' stand up, please." Anya glared at Willow as the got up, "fine! What?"

Willow did the unthinkable; she wrapped her arms around Anya and hugged her tight. Anya squeaked and looked sharply over at Xander, "Xander!" she spat out, "she's touching me. Make her stop."

Willow let go of Anya and stepped back, "I'm done. You can sit back down now." Anya did just that and leaned over to Xander, "what was that all about?" Xander chuckled, "Anya, she was thanking you." Anya frowned in confusion, "for what?"

"For Tara," Willow answered as she made her way to the door. "Oh, does this mean you like me now?" Anya asked. Willow stopped in front of the door and glanced over her shoulder. "Let's just say that I don't un-like you and leave it at that." Then she left.

***

Tara hadn't made it very far after she left Giles' apartment. She had managed to take the five steps leading to the patio table and the two chairs in the courtyard before she stopped. She sank down in one of the chairs and rested her arms on the table. She slowly lowered her head down until it was pillowed on top of her arms. The emotional turmoil this evening had caused her caught up with her once again and she was powerless against it. Huge, wracking sobs wrestled from her heart to her throat and she couldn't keep them down anymore. She cried.

That's how Willow found her a minute later when she exited the apartment. Willow pulled out the second chair and placed it next to Tara's. She sat down and touched Tara's shoulder. "Tara?" The blonde buried her head lower to the table as her body shook from crying. Willow did the only thing she could think of, she bent slightly down underneath the table and wrapped her arms around Tara's waist twisting her slightly and pulling her close. Tara sunk into the comfort offered by the redhead who managed to sit back down. Willow held the blonde tight as she continued to cry — all the pain and lies and betrayals of the last eighteen years seeping through her.

Willow couldn't imagine what Tara was going through and she doubted, given all the facts, she would fathom any better. She couldn't offer her advice or understanding but she had much comfort and love to give and she offered those to Tara freely.

"Why are you still here Willow?" Tara had asked a long moment later as she caught her first deep breath for what seemed like hours. Her face was still buried in the crook of Willow's neck and she wasn't about to give up that position without some serious pouting. "Because," Willow answered and continued running her hand in circles on Tara's back, "you're my friend, and, and I love you." Tara snuggled even closer if possible, "I love you too Willow."

The redhead smiled. "I know."

***

They made it to their dorm room an hour later. It was technically still Halloween so they didn't run into any trouble on the way. They both dragged their feet in through the door and simultaneously fell back a step, slamming the door in the process. Willow slid down the length of the door until she sat down on the floor. "Phew!"

Tara looked down and playfully ruffled Willow's hair, "tired sweetie?" Willow looked up with half-closed eyes and yawned, "you have no idea."

"Actually I think I do." Tara went to her walk-in closet and started removing her costume. She still couldn't believe she had actually worn it. She hated wearing anything that revealed too much of her body. However, it had seemed to fit so well with Willow's costume and she had figured one night couldn't hurt, especially a 'dark' night like Halloween where no one would really be paying that much attention to detail. But still, 'Cat-girl' — what was she thinking? Tara shook her head as she tried to reach the back zipper. "Um, Will?" she glanced over her shoulder, "little help?"

Willow quickly averted her eyes away from Tara when she heard her name. Now was not the best time to be caught staring. But then she heard the request and looked up. "Sure," she said and got off the floor. "Where do you want me? Uh, I mean, what do you need me to do?"

"Zipper?" Willow rolled her eyes at her own stupidity sometimes and grabbed the zipper and pulled it down slowly, revealing more and more expanses of Tara's back with every inch. She had to physically stop herself from tracing the path of the zipper again with her finger on Tara's back. And holy Moses, she's not wearing a bra!

"Okay!" Willow squeaked and turned around, "I think you're all good." She hurried across the room and opened her closet. She quickly divested herself from the tight leather and lace ensemble and tossed it into the hamper. She put on her bathrobe and grabbed her bath kit and fresh pair of underwear. "I'm gonna take a quick shower. I feel kinda bleh."

"Okay, I was gonna do that too actually."

Willow tried not to think about the fact that Tara was in the next stall as she showered, but when she started hearing the blonde humming, then quietly singing, the battle was lost. She almost decided to masturbate then and there, but scolded herself for her naughty thoughts just in time and quickly finished her shower. However, she couldn't stop herself from gazing at the silhouette form visible through the white shower curtain, but closed her eyes shut a moment later and hit herself in the head. Stop it! She went to the sinks and brushed her teeth thoroughly then left the bathroom.

When Tara entered the room Willow was already under the covers but she was still wide-awake.

Tara quickly got ready for bed herself and turned off the main lights. She crawled under her covers and turned on her side so she was facing Willow. Just ask her, she thought, the worst thing that will happen is she'll say no, whereas the best thing... "Um, Will?"

"Yeah?"

"Could we...I mean, would you mind...is it possible..." Tara groaned in frustration.

"Tara, what do you want?" Willow asked sincerely.

"Could you sleep here tonight?"

"Here in the room?"

"No, I mean here," Tara said and patted the space next to her on the bed.

"Oh," Willow breathed. Tara just asked me to sleep with her, in her bed, and what am I doing? Get over there. Willow got up from her bed and walked over to Tara's. She lay down next to the blonde, who scooted back a little to give Willow more space. Willow rolled over on her side and propped herself up on her elbow.

"Tara?"

"Hmm"

"About the magic thing...what you saw tonight, that isn't-"

"Willow, it's okay. I understand."

"I just wish I knew more, so I could help you more when there's Scooby-age afoot, but I am learning you know, reading everything I can get my hands on and that coupled with our spell sessions, maybe soon I'll be able to do the bigger spells?"

"Willow, you do help."

"I know, I just, I just wanna do more Tara. Be like a, like a bad ass Wicca, you know. Really do some good."

Tara rolled over on her side too and faced the redhead. She hugged her pillow as she gathered her thoughts. "Magic, um, shouldn't be l-learned in, um, big bursts?"

"It shouldn't?"

"No, it's a gradual p-process, one s-step at a time." Tara sighed. She didn't really know why she was telling Willow this; it's not like the redhead needed to learn from her. Or wants to.

But Willow pressed on. "So, what step am I on?"

"Um, I'd say you w-were a level 2 w-witch, um, an Adept."

"An adept? Really? What's level 1?" Willow reveled in the fact that Tara knew so much about magic. That meant she could teach her.

"Um, some call it a neophyte, or um, just a beginner."

"What step are you on?"

"Level 3, um, a sage."

"How long did it take you to reach level 3?"

"It just requires practice and um, k-knowledge on um, specific areas."

Willow grinned. "Knowledge! You're my kinda girl...what kinda knowledge?"

Tara stared up at wide-open green eyes. "You, um, really wanna know?"

"Absolutely, I want you to teach me."

"Really?"

"Again I say absolutely. I trust you more than anyone Tara."

"Okay, um, but first there are things you um, h-have to do before you can l-learn about those areas."

"Oh, is that one of those steps you were talking about?"

"Yes, but I'm um, sure there are o-other p-people that could teach you better than m-me. Like Giles-"

"No! I wanna learn from you Tara."

"You do?"

"Yes, I want you to teach me everything. I don't know anything about magic really — not the important stuff. All I know is how to do a spell. I don't know anything about the rules of Wicca or the laws of nature, or all that stuff. And you're the big knowledge woman. Please teach me."

"Um, okay."

"Really?"

Tara nodded and Willow squealed in delight. She threw herself over the blonde and hugged her tight. Tara giggled and rolled them over so they were facing each other again, side by side. Willow stared at Tara with awe. How did she get so lucky to have Tara in her life as her friend? And not just as a friend, but now a mentor. She smiled — she liked that.

"What are you smiling at?" Tara playfully jabbed Willow in the stomach.

Willow giggled, "you."

"You're smiling at me?" Willow nodded. "Do I have something on my face?" Tara questioned, and brought her right hand up to feel for any abnormalities.

Willow giggled again, and shook her head. She grabbed a hold of Tara's hand and drew it towards her. "No, you're perfect. I was just smiling because I was thinking...you're like my mentor now. My witchy mentor. And I was just thinking how much I liked that."

"M-mentor?" Tara grinned.

"Yup."

"So that means I get to boss you around now?"

Yes please! Willow thought, but her answer was a little more ambiguous. "If you want to."

"Oh," Tara's grin widened.

"Are you thinking about how you can boss me around?"

"You betcha."

Willow laughed and poked Tara in the stomach. "Don't get any strange ideas now. I'm not doing your laundry!"

Tara bit her lower lip to hold the giggles down, unsuccessfully. "There are worse things than doing my laundry, you know?"

Your underwear and I...together? Alrighty..."Fine," Willow pretended to pout.

Tara laughed, "Will, I'm not gonna ask you to do my laundry, relax."

"I would have done it though." Willow confessed. She was pretty sure that she'd do anything Tara asked of her. Except ride a horse, or touch a frog, because that would just be gross.

"You would?"

"Yeah, I like doing things for you." Because when I do you smile and when you smile it's just like, wow. Tara smiled brightly at Willow. Just like that.

They lay there studying each other's features and wondering what amazing thing they must have done to deserve one another. Then Tara yawned and broke the spell. "I'm really tired."

"Yeah, me too." Willow kicked the covers a bit to get more comfortable then adjusted them again over her and Tara. "I was reading English lit earlier today and it knocked me out — I've been tired ever since." Willow explained.

Tara snuggled under the comforter and closed her eyes. "One of these days, I'm going to teach you how to appreciate poetry," she mumbled.

"Sure you are." Willow whispered and laid her head on the pillow next to Tara.

"I mean it." Tara argued. Willow smiled and nodded her head. She knew. She had a feeling Tara could teach her to appreciate most things in life.

"Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite."

"Well, as long as you don't bite me, I think I'm good." Tara replied.

"Are you calling me a bug?"

"Yeah, you're my snuggle-bug."

bluemote: Thank you so much for the feedback. "Hearing" you say you think I have a descriptive writing style is a great compliment to me - because I just so happen to think that Into the Stars is the most amazingly descriptive story I've ever read. Particularly chapter 1. It's my favorite :)

The Rose24: Thanks. Yeah, Buffy can still surprise you sometimes - it doesn't happen often but when it does it's like 'whoa!'

Hola!!

Postby willowhanded » Sun Mar 14, 2004 6:30 pm

AH! I mean, hi!

-waves so hard she falls off her chair.-

This is um, the first time I've, uh, posted .. about a story .. and I hope I'm doing this right, cause if I did it wrong then I'd feel all stupidy and I'd hafta be all with the big time blushy embarrassment, and such .. so um .. yeah!

I think this story is really special. I love the way you capture the characters, and I adore your Willow. IT'S JUST SO CUTE!! ( I can't wait for their relationship to progress! ) And well .. I just decided I'd post this to literally fall to my knees and beg for more, please?

Hiya Kristi/willowhanded!

Don't hurt yourself now with the chair-falling - a bruised butt is never a good thing.

I'd have to say, I think you're doing this first post-y thing superbly well...well, at least I'm all smiling and stuff now so ya! :)

It's 2 AM now here in Iceland and I really should be sleeping - but I woke up out of nowhere 15 minutes ago - and where do you go when you can't sleep? To Pens, of course. Plus thoughts and ideas about chapter 4 were keeping me awake - or that is, keeping me away from falling back asleep. So yeah, I think you can definitely expect more. Thank you so much for replying - I really appreciate it.

Btw, are you from Hawaii? Besides the whole Hola greeting, I'm asking because of your <3 usage. One girl in my on-line class is from Hawaii and she uses it all the time - and I had no idea what it meant until she explained it to me :blush

Oh, and one more thing - love your nickname .. willowhanded - it's so cute :) How does one get "willowhanded" anyway? Really, I wanna know ;)

I am loving your spin on season four. I love the way W/T's relationship is progressing. You really have Anya nailed. :lol

I can't wait until W/T admit their love to one another.

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.

Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Hey Sheba, thanks for the feedback - me likez :)

Yeah, I'm a sucker for "friends then lovers". Not that I don't like the fics on this board where they're all love at first sight - I'm just a huge build-up kinda girl :) So, I decided to write some myself - hopefully decently - to satisfy my own craving.

Sheba.. mmm, where do I know that name from? :hmm

Update? Huh, I dunno - I woke up at 2 AM last night and couldn't go back to bed until 5 AM because Chapter 4 thoughts kept me up :)

So maybe not too long. I usually get around to writing on Fridays and then the weekends because school gets in the way during the week. But I'm working on the outline right now - and I'm hoping it will be a humorous chapter - there's so much material to use from Beer Bad :)

Well, the tempus fugit serious for one (S4 and S7 - Absolute Zero is still in progress), Camp Flutie, there's a great story on Near Her Always called The Master Willow Series - it's vamp willow/tara story and it's amazing - but hey, e-mail me (email's back in first post) and I'll get you a list of pre-relationship stories and where to find them if they're not on here.

And yeah, okay...update this weekend. It was the pout that did it. Puppy dog eyes are a good start - but man, give me that pout and I give in. So no taking advantage missy!
