Title: The Wiccan Chronicles

Author: Tinna Karen

Disclaimer: All characters from Buffy The Vampire Slayer belong to Fox, Mutant Enemy and Joss Whedon. Some dialog has been borrowed from BtVS scripts.

Rating: PG13

Summary: Willow and Buffy start their freshman year at U.C. Sunnydale.

Notes: Set in an AU season 4. All you need to know is that there is no Oz. I have taken some serious liberty with the season 4 storyline. This won't be a story of season 4 where I integrate Tara sooner than the show did. This will be a semi-rewrite, where storylines from season 4 are up for grabs, but I won't be using all of them. Oh, and thanks to my fantabulous beta reader: hellyeahallday

Chapter 1: Roommates

So far, Willow's day had been a good one. Buffy had arrived at her house at 8 am, on time for once — which surprised Willow so much that she had actually asked "Buffy, what are you doing here?" — then they had loaded her neatly packed stuff in Joyce's jeep and set off for U.C. Sunnydale. The drive took less than 15 minutes.

They went to the housing office first and got their room assignments. They were happy they had been assigned rooms in the same dorm, Stevenson Hall, and only a floor apart. Hoping to have been assigned each other's roommate was too much to ask for, and they accepted that, gracefully. Buffy's room was on the second floor, Willow's on the third, so they decided to move Buffy in first. When they finished, around 10 am, Buffy's roommate still hadn't arrived, and Buffy wanted to wait and see if she'd show up soon, but they had no time to dawdle — Willow's words, to which Buffy replied: "You've been spending way too much time with Giles." — so they set their sights on the third floor.

"How did we miss that vamp last night?"

"I'm not sure, but I think American Pop Culture had something to do with it." Buffy said as she carried the three boxes towards Willow's dorm room.

"Oh, here...let me get the door for you Buff." Willow ran a few steps ahead and opened the door to her room.

"Thanks Will." Buffy grunted. "I'm glad that piece of paper you're holding isn't too heavy for you — someone had to open the door."

She stepped into the room and put the boxes on the empty bed, on the right side of the room. She sighed with relief, false relief, the boxes were no more than paperweight with her slayer strength. As she took in the sight of Willow's room she noticed that the other side of the room was almost barren, but not empty. The bed had been made, and few boxes were next to the bed and on the desk. "I guess you're roommate's already here. Have you met her yet?"

"Nope, especially on the account of this being my first time in this room and all."

"Oh, right."

"So, should we get the rest of my stuff?" Willow asked. She was leaning on the door, holding it open.

"Sure, where is Xander anyway? Why isn't he helping us?" Buffy asked as she made her way past Willow and through the door.

"He's still on his cross-country trip, said he'd be back in a couple of days."

Willow followed Buffy out of the room and they headed downstairs to the lobby. Students and parents were bustling about the whole building. A group of middle-aged men — fathers presumably — had congregated in the sitting area in the lobby, with a cold drink in their hand, taking a breather after having carried boxes and suitcases up flights of stairs. Mothers were helping their offspring decorate. You could hear exasperated 'Mom!' and indignant 'Oh don't take that tone with me' from almost every room. As Willow and Buffy reached the main entrance and stepped outside a girl carrying two boxes was nearing the entrance.

"Here, let me get the door for you." Willow offered, and held the door open for the girl.

"Oh, um, thank you." She responded, her face hidden behind the box.

"No problem." Willow watched the girl try to navigate towards the three steps leading to the door. As she got to the last step a student bumped into her causing the top box to topple off the bottom one. Buffy was the first one to react and caught the box before it crashed to the ground. "Got it."

"Um, thank you. Thank you so much." A blonde haired girl came into view when the box had fallen; she smiled at Buffy, appreciating the help.

"Sure, I mean, you're welcome. Let us help you with those boxes. Where are you heading?" Buffy asked, as she and Willow followed the girl into the dorm.

"Uhmm, 313."

"Hey Will, that's your room."

"It is?" Willow looked at the piece of paper still in her hand. And sure enough, in the top left corner, in the box under the word 'Room' it said 313. "Oh, yeah..." Willow looked up and turned towards her apparent roommate. "Hey roomie." She grinned.

The girl smiled shyly back at Willow. "Hey."

"Oh Buff, why don't you give me that box and you go get my suitcases?"

Buffy half-glared at Willow, "Since when did I become your personal servant Will?"

"Since sophomore year in high school." Willow grinned and picked up the box from Buffy's grasp.

"Right." Buffy mumbled and turned around.

Willow smiled as she watched her best friend jog out the door and towards her mom's jeep that was parked by the dorm entrance. She turned towards her new roommate. "So...I'm Willow by the way."

"Tara."

"Nice to meet you Tara."

"Nice to meet you too Willow. Oh, and um, thanks for, you know, helping." She nodded towards the box Willow was carrying.

"Again I say no problem. That's what friends are for right?" She started walking towards the main stairway that would lead them to the third floor. Tara followed. I wouldn't know.

***

"So that's everything, right Will?" Buffy asked. They had finished moving all of Willow's stuff inside, and even helped Tara with the rest of hers. Clothes had been hung up or placed in drawers, a bed had been made and a computer set up.

"Yup, I think so." Willow looked around her half of the room and nodded. Everything looked in order.

"So what do you wanna do now? I'm voting mochas first and foremost, then I'm open for suggestions."

"Definitely mochas. Ohh, and muffins." Willow bounced and clapped her hands.

"Alrighty." Willow looked at Buffy and nodded towards Tara, and Buffy nodded in the affirmative. Willow turned to Tara who was just finishing hanging up her shirts and sweaters. "Hey Tara?"

Tara turned away from her closet. "Um, yes?"

"Do you wanna come with us to the Espresso Pump for mochas?"

"Mochas?" Buffy and Willow nodded excitedly. "I've never had a mocha."

Willow's eyes widened. "Buffy!" She looked aghast. "She's never had a mocha. This is horrible. Unthinkable." Willow mock fanned herself. "I can't breathe." The slayer turned to Willow and placed both her arms on the redhead's shoulders.

"Will, breathe, don't panic. We can still salvage this." Buffy played along. She looked towards Tara. "Tara, I think it's for the good of Willow's health that you come with us." She looked back at Willow, who was paler than before. "Will, it's okay. Just keep breathing. I think we got her just in time, she can become a mocha addict yet." She let go of Willow's shoulders and turned her attention back to Tara.

"So what do you say Tara?"

"Um..." Tara giggled. "Sure, if it's um, in the best interest of, um Willow."

"Good. You ready?" Tara nodded. All she had to do was grab her jacket and her wallet.

"Will?" Buffy asked.

"Yeah, I'm good." Willow said with a grin. She walked towards her door and held it open. Buffy walked out, then Tara, then finally Willow stepped out, and the door clicked shut.

"That was a, um quick recovery Willow." Tara grinned as they walked down the hallway.

"Uhhh..."

"So Tara," Buffy laughed and decided to come to her friends rescue. "What classes are you taking?"

***

"So now you know all about me and Willow here. How about telling us something about yourself?" Buffy asked. She and Tara were sitting side by side inside the booth at the Espresso Pump, and Willow was sitting opposite. They had already received their mochas, and Tara expressed her appreciation of the concoction with an exclamation of "Oh, wow, that's good." Willow and Buffy heartily agreed with a synchronized chorus of "Oh yeah."

Tara immediately ducked her head, obviously not comfortable with the sudden shift of attention.

"Um..." she mumbled.

"Let's start with something easy. Like, where you're from?" Buffy said.

"Alabama." Tara answered.

"Alabama? Really? That's so cool." Willow smiled at her roommate. "So do you say any southern um, words, like uh...howdy or y'all and stuff?" Willow inwardly groaned at her choice of words. Howdy and y'all? Geez Rosenberg, predictable much?

"Um, not really. But um, my mom, she used to say that I sometimes um, have a s-southern accent when I'm talking in my s-sleep."

Willow giggled and Tara ducked her head again, a lopsided smile on her face. That is so cute Willow thought. She's adorable.

"So I'm gonna be hearing 'howdy y'all, how 'bout them Yankees' at night?" Again, Willow groaned. Don't I know any other southern words?

"Um, p-possibly." Tara met Willow's eyes and they grinned at each other.

"That's so funny."

"Who are you to talk about funny Will? You talk in your sleep all the time." Buffy piped up. She had been enjoying herself so far, but Willow and Tara had been monopolizing the conversation and it was time for her to reintegrate.

"Oh, don't you dare Buffy!" Willow warned her friend.

"Will, she might as well hear about this now, instead of tonight...I think it's my duty to warn her. The tadpoles might scare her, you know." Buffy smirked mischievously at the redhead.

Willow shuddered at the mention of the tadpoles. Those damn icky, slimy, thingies...yuck.

"Um, am I missing something?" Tara asked. The banter between the two best friends was fun to watch. She hoped to experience that kind of friendship sometime as well. But Willow's visible shudder wasn't as amusing.

"Will?" Buffy asked for permission.

"Fine." Willow grumbled, and sunk low in her seat.

"See the thing is Tara..."

***

After a long first day at college Willow was finally winding down. She lay in her bed, with her laptop, exploring the university neighborhood with her very fast Ethernet connection. Her laptop rested partly on her thighs and partly on her stomach, her knees bent so she could see the keyboard better.

After the mochas and the muffins she had been downright hyper for the rest of the day — and classes hadn't even started — wearing even the slayer out in the end. But it had been a great day. She'd met Tara, who was just adorable in Willow's opinion. She was very shy, that's for sure, but witty. Sometimes Willow wasn't sure whether Tara was joking or not, she had incredible control over her emotions. Well, maybe emotions wasn't the right word, expression was probably better, because while she could say, deadpan, the weirdest things, her eyes gave her away. When she was joking her eyes would sort of twinkle, and she'd be able to maintain eye contact, but when she was serious she'd eventually glance away, like she was almost embarrassed by her admission.

The door to the room opened and Tara stepped in. She closed the door behind her, and turned the lock. She tossed her toiletries bag on her desk and made her way over to her bed. She crawled under the covers and lay down on her back, staring up at the ceiling. She took a deep breath and exhaled. She couldn't stop the smile from appearing; this had been one of the best days of her life.

She had been scared and excited at the same time coming here. Excited to escape from her so-called family, escape from that room, but scared all the same. Scared it wouldn't be any better, scared she wouldn't make any friends, and scared they'd find her before she got here. But she had been scared for no reason apparently. They hadn't found her; she had made it across the country, to Sunnydale California and it was better than she could have ever imagined. She wasn't sure if she'd made a friend yet, acquaintances — yes, but friends? Tara turned on her side and looked over at Willow. I'm working on it.

Willow could feel Tara's eyes on her so she glanced over. "Hey, tired?"

"A little." The blonde answered, yawning as she said this.

Willow giggled. "Wanna go to sleep?"

"Um, no, I'm okay. Unless, you are then, um, okay." Tara smiled.

"I'm still kinda wired so I was gonna watch a movie, wanna watch with me?"

"Um, Willow," Tara looked around the room, "we don't have a TV in here."

"No, I mean..." Willow giggled as she closed her laptop and got out of bed. "I know we don't have a TV but," she walked over the room to Tara's bed, "we can watch it on my PowerBook."

Tara raised one eyebrow. "PowerBook?"

"My computer."

"Ohh..." Tara got it, yet she didn't. You can watch movies on computer's these days? She wasn't a big computer wiz. But apparently Willow was.

"Yeah, so you wanna?"

"Sure."

"Well, then scoot over roomie."

Tara did so and Willow handed her the laptop while she crawled under the covers. She grabbed the laptop from Tara and opened it up.

"I have a few movies on my hard drive, but I was browsing the servers on campus and there's a lot of stuff on there. Here..." She clicked on a few keys on the keyboard, a shortcut combination she had created, and her movie folder opened up. She double clicked the file called Movie Lists and a document with a long list of movies opened up. "I've sorted the movies by genres and then alphabetically. What are you in the mood for."

"Um, something non-horror-y."

"Okay, no slash...well that narrows the list down considerably." Willow giggled, "Most of these come from Xander."

"Xander?"

"Oh, he's my best friend since kindergarten, and also a big horror movie fan."

"Oh, okay...well, let's see." Tara scanned over the list. There was a list where the genre said 'unknown'. She recognized few of the titles, some she'd seen, some not...ooh. Fucking Åmål, I've always wanted to see that one.

"Um, Willow, can we watch this one, um Fucking Åmål?" Tara asked as she pointed to the name of the movie on the screen.

Fucking what? Willow's eyes widened. Fucking Åmål was one of the titles she hadn't recognized when ordering the list, and she had assumed it was... "Um, Tara...I'm not really, um, into, you know...porn."

Tara looked at Willow, an unrecognizable expression on her face, and then she burst out laughing.

"Oh my stars, Will..." she guffawed.

Willow watched Tara trying to stop laughing and almost succeeding but then the laughter bubbled up again. Adorable. Willow thought.

"I said something funny?" Willow asked. Tara had managed to control her laughter, but few giggles escaped.

"Fucking Åmål isn't, um, p-porn Willow, it's a Swedish movie, about two girls in high school, who, um, fall in love."

"Swedish — two girls in high school...are you sure it isn't porn?" Tara just rolled her eyes and Willow giggled. "Okay, so not porn, my mistake. But the title is kinda, you know, sketchy?"

"Yes, I think they renamed it to Show Me Love when it came out here."

"They went from Fucking...something, to Show Me Love?"

"Åmål, and yes."

"Okay..."

Willow opened up her network neighborhood and connected to the server who had the movie Tara had chosen. It only took a minute to download it to Willow's computer and soon it was playing. It had subtitles, to both Willow and Tara's relief — neither one of them verse in Swedish — and they snuggled down and got comfortable for the rest of the night.

***

Buffy stood in the middle of the quad and turned around in circles. She was completely disoriented, which was ironic given the fact that it was orientation day. She had remembered to bring her folder she had gotten from housing yesterday. It was yellow, and included supposedly valuable information; like a map of campus, where to go to take your math and foreign language placement tests, and where to register for classes if you hadn't already done so. And yet, Buffy spun in circles.

On the other side of campus, at Weisman Hall, Willow and Tara had just gotten their ID cards and were heading over to the Math and Science Building, a.k.a. Bear Hall to register for their classes. When they walked out of Weisman they noticed the long line of students waiting for their ID card.

"Wow, we just missed the line." Willow said. They had gotten there early and only a handful of students were waiting when they arrived, so they didn't have to wait long, now however, the line wrapped around the entire building. And it wasn't a small building.

"Yeah, I think, um, your colorful schedule will really come in handy, um, today." Tara said, and bumped into Willow's shoulder playfully.

"Hey! No mocking the schedule. By the end of the day, you will be worshipping said schedule."

They entered Bear Hall and went their separate ways, promising to meet each other outside the building when they were finished. Tara entered the room with the K-O sign above, and Willow went to the one where it said P-T.

***

Buffy had finished registering for her classes and was heading over to Weisman to get her ID when she saw Willow and Tara walking towards her.

"Buffy, hey!" Willow skipped over to her, Tara following at a more sedated pace.

"Will, Tara. Boy, am I glad to see you."

"Hi, Buffy."

"Isn't this great Buffy? There's so much going on." Willow enthused, bouncing on her feet with excitement.

"It is...something alright."

"I got all my courses, except for 'Modern Poetry', I had to switch to 'Ethno-musicology.' But that's cool, West African drumming; I think it's going to change everything. Oh, and Tara's taking psych with us."

"Great...I see you guys got ticketed as well." Buffy said, indicating the different colored flyers Willow and Tara were holding.

"Yes! I've heard about five different issues and I'm angry about each and every one of them." Willow frowned playfully. "What'd you get?"

"Jello shots."

"I didn't get 'Jello shots!'" Willow pouted and turned to Tara, "Tara, why didn't we get 'jello shots'?" Tara shrugged. The redhead turned back to Buffy and handed her a flier from her pile. "I'll trade you for a... 'Take Back the Night.'"

Buffy let her have all of her fliers with a smile.

"Yay!" Willow jumped. Tara and Buffy shared a smile. Willow was like an adorable, bouncy puppy.

"Are we heading anywhere near Weisman Hall? I still need to get my I.D. card." Buffy asked.

"Oh, we got ours this morning. The lines are really long now, you should have gone early." Willow stated.

"Yes, um, Willow made a s-schedule." Tara added.

***

It was nighttime in Sunnydale. A seasoned citizen would know better than to be out after dark, but this was the U.C. Sunnydale campus — freshmen were all over the place. It was like a feeding ground for vampires, and for that reason Buffy patrolled.

"How am I supposed to patrol here Will? Don't these people have homes to go to?"

"Uh, Buff. We're on campus...this pretty much is their home."

"Smartass."

Buffy and Willow navigated through the throngs of students that populated the narrow walkways at campus. It was the night of orientation and the craziness from this morning had not yet abated. The lines of freshmen waiting to get their ID cards earlier that day had only shifted to a new venue. Now they were waiting to get into the auditorium for the 'Welcome Freshmen' concert.

"Is Tara going to the concert?" Buffy asked.

"Yeah, I'm meeting her there in..." Willow checked her watch, "45 minutes. The concert doesn't start for another hour or so, right now they just have this cheesy 'Welcome Freshmen' stuff."

"Will, I gotta tell ya, you completely lucked out on roommates. Tara's great."

"I know — she's amazing..." A bright smile lit Willow's face. Buffy waited if any further information was forthcoming, but when Willow had smiled dreamily for nearly a whole minute, Buffy spoke. "My roommate on the other hand is a complete psychopath — as far as I can tell."

"What makes you say that? I thought you said Kathy was alright." Willow asked. She distinctly remembered Buffy saying those exact words. ("Met your roommate yet?" —"Uh-huh. She's alright.")

"I was wrong." Willow chuckled and raised an eyebrow at Buffy. She shook her head at the redhead. "Don't ask." Willow waited. "Okay, so do you know what she did last night? All night?" Willow shook her head. "Listened to Cher."

"Oh, really?"

"I'm serious Will. All freakin' night — and it was the same stupid song too...all night."

"Well, maybe she's just a big fan?"

"Being a fan is one thing, being a psycho lunatic is a whole other card game."

"Ball game."

"Whatever."

Willow and Buffy headed away from the auditorium to the less populated areas; Buffy was convinced that the vamps and demons would hide there in the bushes for lost freshmen trying to find their way. A rustling noise caught Buffy's attention.

"Did you hear that Will?"

Willow looked from left to right, and, like a well-trained Scoobie, behind her. She didn't hear anything.

"I'm chewing my gum pretty loud."

"Something else."

"My sneakers are squeaky."

"Will, I'm going for something lurk-y."

Willow stopped and listened for a few seconds..."Sorry, no."

Buffy sighed. "Where are all the vamps?"

"Maybe they found out you were coming here and decided to stay away?"

Buffy pouted. "But...Hello, slayer here...it's like their mission statement to kill me. I am so not down with this avoidance-y."

"Who said anything about avoidance?"

Buffy and Willow whipped their head towards the sound of the voice. A blonde haired vampire, dressed in black from head to toe, and four lackeys stood on the other side of the bushes, which separated them from the Buffy and Willow.

"Shit," Buffy whispered.

"And you thought they were avoiding you..." Willow whispered back.

"Will, on my word, run. There's too many of them for just the two of us. I'll try to stall them."

"Okay." Willow breathed.

"So..." Buffy turned her attention to the blonde leader, "you go here? I thought this was a dead-free zone?" Willow started walking slowly backwards towards the auditorium.

"Slayer, I heard you went here. Won't do you much good though, seeing as you'll be dead in 5 seconds."

"You're not the first one to make me that offer, and you won't be the last."

"You sure about that?"

"Will, go!" Buffy said, right before she jumped over the bushes. Willow turned around and ran as fast as she could towards the crowd of students up ahead.

One of the lackeys started to chase after Willow but Buffy caught him with a low sweep, sending him face first into the ground. She quickly staked him and got up facing the other four vampires.

"Nice move." The leader said, then she charged Buffy. They traded kicks and blows, Buffy being on the receiving end more often than not. She got the upper hand at one point and managed to drive the vampire down to the ground, but a stake-break never came, and the blonde fought back — effectively. After the vampire managed to dislocate Buffy's shoulder, the slayer accepted her defeat and ran.

***

Buffy had been in a major funk after her defeat against the vampire gang. And it only got worse after they cleaned out her dorm room, taking all of her stuff, and planting a fake note saying that Buffy had moved out, not being able to handle the pressures of college life. Buffy had gone to the Bronze to drown her sorrows, only to meet up with Xander, who convinced her to snap out of it, and go kick some demon ass. With the help of Willow and Xander she cleaned out the nest, and got almost all of her stuff back.

***

"Oh my god Tara, you would not believe this girl." Buffy complained. After ordering their mochas that first day (Buffy and Willow staring in rapt attention as Tara took her first sip, and almost high-five-ing each other at the smile that lit up Tara's face afterwards) Buffy, Willow and Tara had made it their daily tradition to come to the Espresso Pump — in actuality, it already was a daily tradition for Buffy and Willow but they warmly welcomed Tara into their fold.

Now four days into their first semester at U.C. Sunnydale, Buffy was telling Tara all about her roommate Kathy, with Willow giving the affirmative nods now and then to support her friend's story, and the occasional "It's true" when Tara needed something more than a nod to believe the anecdotes about Kathy's antics.

"Seriously, she labeled every single item of hers in the fridge...every egg included. She'd already labeled the box, but oh no, that wasn't enough. She had to label every egg as well." Buffy paused to take a sip of her double-mint, extra foam mocha. "I told you about the pencil's right?"

"Yes, you did. And although I agree that um, sharpening ones pencils and using a ruler to make sure each pencil is the same length is slightly um, obsessive..." Tara said.

"Just slightly?" Buffy interrupted.

Tara giggled, "however, there are some um, pen obsessions that are..." she glanced over at Willow, "very cute."

"Oh, you mean Willow's system of different colored pens?" At Tara's nod, Buffy said, "Yeah, you're right, it's completely insane."

"Hey!" Willow protested.

"I'd say quirky." Tara smiled at Willow who smiled brightly back, then turned to Buffy and stuck her tongue out at her. "Ha! If Tara says it's quirky, it's quirky, not insane."

"And Tara is an authority of quirky versus insane?" Buffy questioned.

"Well yeah, she has to live with me after all." Willow giggled, soon followed by Buffy and Tara.

***

"That's all you're having?" Willow asked. She looked down at her tray — it was stacked with food, Tara's tray, however, was only holding a bowl of soup, a biscuit and a glass of water.

"Yeah, I'm um, not very hungry."

They made their way to an empty table in the dining hall. It was still rather early, 5:30 pm, and with the dining hall being open till 7:30, not many students had arrived. Willow and Tara preferred being early rather than late. The food was still hot rather than lukewarm and there were more choices available.

They found a table by the windows, the sun casting a warm glow over the area.

"You know," Willow said as she sat down, "Buffy met this cute guy earlier today and he advised her to take advantage of the food system here."

"What do you mean?"

"Um, well, he said to stack your tray with as much food as you can possibly get away with — what you don't eat can serve as a nice snack later that night, or even breakfast the next morning. That way you save your meal plan — make it last all semester."

"Oh, I see what you're, um saying. So I should go back and get some, um apples and yogurt — stuff like that, and just put it in my bag."

"Exactly. Oh, could you get some bananas too?" Willow grinned.

"Sure." Tara giggled, and got up from her seat.

She returned a minute later with assortment of fruits and yogurts, and even some cookies.

"Oh, cookies...good choice."

"I thought you'd like it."

They ate their meal without a hurry, enjoying each other company. Despite the mountain of food on Willow's plate, she still went back in and got some more. Maybe the reason being she'd only taken a bite out of this and that — never actually finishing a whole dish. She came back with a big bowl of frozen yogurt and chocolate fudge. She even produced a second spoon for Tara, who accepted with a smile, and they dug in.

"Oh, yumm..." Willow said, her mouth full of frozen yogurt. "You know, for a dining hall dessert, this ain't so bad." Tara looked up at her friend and giggled.

"Um, you've got a little fudge right..." she pointed at the side of her mouth "there."

Willow blushed and licked her lips and the sides of her mouth. "Did I get it?"

"No, um..." Tara leaned over the table and wiped the fudge off with her index and middle finger. "There, all gone." To her own surprise she sucked the fudge of her fingers. Willow's eyes widened at the display and again she blushed.

"Uh..." Willow started, but finding herself to be speechless — a rare occurrence in her life — she grabbed another spoonful of frozen yogurt. They finished the yogurt in silence, stealing glances here and there. When it was all gone, Willow found her voice again. "So, ready to go?" Tara nodded and put the fruits and the cups of yogurt she'd grabbed earlier in her bag. She got up and picked up her tray and then left the table. Willow grabbed her tray as well and followed Tara to the conveyor belt. They dropped their trays on the belt, watching them disappear under an opening in the wall, leading towards the dining hall kitchen.

They exited the building and started walking side by side towards Stevenson Hall. It was a nice night, and the sun was still up, so there was no need to hurry inside. They took their time strolling along the path leading to the dorms.

"What's your family like?" Willow piped up.

Tara winced, and she hoped Willow hadn't noticed. "They're um, t-they're okay, I guess."

"Touchy subject, eh?"

You have no idea. Tara thought. "Yeah, a little. You?"

"I'd rather just forget about them sometimes if I could, you know?"

Tara nodded. "So should we, um, should we just agree n-not to talk about them for now?"

"Okay Tara, but..." Willow slowly took hold of Tara's hand and interlaced their fingers, "if you ever want to talk about it, you know, with me, you can." Tara looked down at their interlaced fingers, a lopsided smile on her face. She squeezed Willow's hand gently. "I will."

***

"Hey Tara, are you doing anything after class?" Willow asked as Tara came into the room. She had just finished getting dressed this morning when she remembered that she had promised to meet Buffy after class so she could help her with her psych assignment 'which is due today' Willow thought and shook her head, but she had also signed up for the Wicca group whose first meeting was today, right after class. "Not to say you never not have anything to do after class. I mean, not that you're not a very social um...but I, uh...well are you doing something after class?"

Tara rolled her eyes at her roommate and smiled. Sometimes Willow would just keep going, even though there was no need for it. It was very cute.

"Actually, yes I am. I have a, um, meeting, but it should only take about an hour or so. Why?" Tara grabbed her book bag and slung it over her shoulders. Willow did the same and they walked out the door.

"Oh, it's nothing." Willow said as they walked down the hallway towards the stairs. "I just remembered I promised Buffy to help her with our psych homework, but I have to be somewhere after class, which only takes an hour too, I should be free at 4, but Buffy has that class at 4 and the assignment has to be in before 5 o'clock. And I was just wondering if you had time to help her, but I guess not."

Tara opened the entrance door and they stepped outside into the sun. It was a good day — weather wise, but then again, most Sunnydale days were good in that respect. They headed towards Bear Hall.

"And yeah, I realize she's had three days to work on it, but she's been busy with p-" Willow stopped. Not ready to go there yet. "Well, you know how her stuff got stolen two days ago?"

Tara nodded. "Well, apparently her notebook wasn't among the things found. So no helpful notes for the sl-" Hello, secret identity Willow. Spill much? "Um, for Buffy."

"Oh."

"Yeah..."

"I'm sorry I can't help her, but she can have my notes after class — the assignment isn't very hard, I'm sure she can do it within the hour."

"Hey, that's a good idea. With our notes she'll no doubt finish the assignment in time, and if not...she can always ask the T.A. for help."

"Yeah, Riley's a nice guy, if she asks he'll definitely help her."

"You know Riley?"

"Oh, um, yeah, I've seen him around campus a few times. And we've talked then."

"Oh, neat."

When they got to the entrance of Bear Hall Willow held the door open for Tara. She smiled, appreciating the gesture. "So what's this meeting you're going to?"

"Oh, it's um, just some art stuff. You?"

"Computer stuff."

They stood there, avoiding eye contact for a moment — neither one comfortable with lying to one another.

"Well, this is me," Willow pointed towards her classroom, "Calculus."

"Yeah, I know. I'm upstairs. Trig."

"Yeah, I know." They giggled. Then Willow started walking towards her classroom and Tara watched her go. "See ya later, Tara."

"Bye Willow."

***

Three o'clock rolled around and Willow was already sat in of the chairs where the Wicca group met. The president of the group, Carol, was going to say a prayer to the goddess, and then the meeting would start.

"We come together, daughters of Gaia..."

A late arrival managed to sneak quietly and take a seat on the floor without disturbing Carol. No one noticed except Willow. The rest of the Wicca group had closed their eyes but Willow had sneaked a peak after the first syllable. When she saw the familiar blonde sit down at the floor she was shocked, and thrilled at the same time. Tara.

Tara looked around the group. She started on the girl to her left and worked her way to her right. She didn't recognize anyone, except... Willow. Tara's eyes widened as she locked eyes with Willow. At first they just stared at each other, motionless, but then a slow smile crept up on Willow's face, and an answering grin from Tara. They knew. Pretty soon they were smiling goofily at each other.

Carol finished the prayer and started the meeting.

***

Willow and Tara walked silently to their room after the Wicca group. They kept stealing glances at each other, but never making eye contact. As they reached their door, Willow was the first one to grab her key so she opened the door and held it open for Tara. She watched the blonde walk in and sit down on her bed. They stared at each other for a moment, before Willow stepped into the room and closed the door.

The redhead kicked off her sneakers and tossed her jacket on her bed. She made her way over to Tara and pointed to her bed. "Do you mind?" Tara shook her head so Willow climbed onto Tara's bed and sat Indian style, gazing at the blonde. Tara felt Willow looking at her, so she turned to face the redhead, tugging one leg in front of her, leaving the other by the edge of the bed, touching the floor.

"So..." Willow started.

"So..." Tara echoed.

"You're a witch." They said at the same time. Willow giggled and Tara ducked her head down, hiding behind her hair, as she smiled shyly.

"Hey," Willow reached out and lifted Tara's chin up so they made eye contact again. "You have a beautiful smile Tara, don't hide it."

"I'm just..." Tara sighed. "What?" The redhead asked.

"I'm not, um used to...all of this." Tara whispered. Willow scooted closer to the blonde.

"What do you mean Tara?"

"I'm not used to having a friend, or someone saying I have a beautiful smile...or someone knowing I'm a witch, and not um, running the other way." Tara giggled self-consciously.

"Well, I'm your friend, so you better get used to that." Tara barely nodded but Willow caught it so she continued. "And I also think you have the most beautiful smile I've ever seen, so get used to me saying that a lot." Tara smiled — she couldn't help it. "And I'll never run away from you Tara." The blonde let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding. Willow had truly become her friend. "Thank you Willow," she whispered.

Willow smiled at Tara, but when she noticed Tara's eyes glistening with unshed tears she became worried. "Hey," she cupped the blonde's cheek and wiped away a single tear that had managed to escape. "Are you okay Tara?"

Tara nodded. "I'm just...um, happy, I guess." She sniffled and brought up her hand to dry her eyes.

"Tara?" The blonde looked up at Willow. "Um, hug?" Willow offered. Tara smiled shyly and nodded again. Willow scooted even closer and wrapped her arms around her friend. Tara slowly brought her hands up around Willow and reciprocated the hug. They stayed like that for a long while but then a sharp knock on the door, and the door being opened brought them out of their reverie.

Buffy walked in with a determined look on her face. "Will, I've figured it out."

"You have?" Willow had a confused look on her face. What was there to figure out?

"I have. Kathy is evil and she must be stopped." Willow rolled her eyes. Oh, Kathy.

"I'm going to have to kill her."

***

"Buffy, wait up."

After Buffy had so abruptly left after announcing her plan to kill Kathy, Tara and Willow had stared at each other, eyes widened, until Willow had finally scrambled out of bed, yelling "I'll be right back" before following Buffy out of the room.

Buffy turned around at the sound of Willow's voice, and waited while the redhead caught up with her.

"Um...hi!" Willow started, then "Are you insane?"

"Will, she's evil. And I have proof. Check this out." She opened the front pocket of her book bag and pulled out a plastic bag. Willow stared at it before commenting. "Toenail clippings?"

"Evil toenail clippings." Buffy stated. "She cut them last night and I collected them while she was in the bathroom — she thought I was sleeping — anyway, I measured them before I went to bed and again this morning and they grew Will. That's totally a demon thing."

"Okay...well, will you at least talk to Giles before you do anything rash?"

"Of course, I'm not stupid."

So you say. Willow thought, out loud she said, "Great." And then she watched Buffy walk away from her down the hallway and disappear around the corner. Willow turned on her heal and ran to her room. Without saying anything to Tara she picked up the phone and called Giles.

"Giles, it's me...Buffy is on her way and she's gone a little, um...insane."

She listened to what Giles had to say. "Right, okay bye." Then she hung up.

***

As it turned out, Buffy was right. Kathy was a demon, who had escaped from her overbearing father in another dimension to come to Earth to go to college. She needed a soul to hide from her father so she had been secretly performing a ritual every night to suck parts of Buffy's soul into her, almost succeeding. Only Willow and Giles performing a spell at the nick of time stopped the ritual from completion. Buffy and Kathy had fought, wrecking the room in the process, until Kathy's father had shimmered into existence in their room and had taken his daughter home with him through a dimensional portal.

"Obsessive-compulsive schizophrenic?" Tara asked. She was lying on her bed, on her stomach, having been in the middle of writing a paper when Willow came in, sat down on the bed next to her and told her about what had happened with Kathy.

"Yup, turns out she'd escaped from some, um, mental hospital and disguised herself as Buffy's roommate. Pretty scary stuff." Willow said. She was lying through her teeth, and hating every minute of it. But Tara still didn't know of the dangers that lurked in Sunnydale, and while not telling her might be dangerous as well, Willow wanted to shield Tara for as long as she could from the very real nightmares the knowledge of vampires and demons brought to the surface.

"Wow, Buffy must be freaked?"

"Totally — and when they, um, the people from the hospital, came to pick her up, Kathy kinda went nuts-o and wrecked the place."

"Not so good." Tara surmised.

Willow giggled. "No, not so good, so I'm gonna go help Buffy fix up the place. Wanna come?" She stood up and walked backwards to the door, keeping her eye on Tara.

"Oh, um, I'd love to help, but I have s-some homework I need to finish?"

"Oh, of course...school comes first I always say — and that's really lame — anyway, it's not a problem. I'll see ya later then?" Willow opened the door.

"Okay, oh and, um tell Buffy I'm sorry."

"Ah, sorry, schmorry...there's nothing to be sorry about. Later." Willow grinned, and closed the door.

"Bye Willow."

***

"Buffy, I'm sorry I didn't believe you, you know, about Kathy." Willow said. She was sitting on the empty bed in Buffy's room. Buffy was trying to fix the shelves that had been smashed in her fight against Kathy. "It's okay Will. It was understandable. Even I didn't pick up on her demon-y ways, well, not immediately. But there was always this small tingling, you know..." Buffy scratched the back of her head, "like right here," she pointed at the place she had been scratching, "but my spider sense didn't kick in until the 27th time of listening to 'Believe' ... then I knew she was the spawn of Satan."

"Yeah, well I'm still sorry, Xander and Giles are too. We feel terrible." Willow stood up and walked over to Buffy and helped holding up a piece of board while Buffy screwed one end to the wall fastenings.

"Anything we can do to make it up to you? Just name it."

"Well, you could move in." Buffy grinned at Willow but when an answering grin wasn't forthcoming — an apologetic look instead, she frowned. "Oh."

"It's not that I don't want to room with you Buffy, really, I would love that, it's just that well..." Willow started to turn around — she needed to pace. She let go of the board she was holding, but immediately regretted it when Buffy yelled, "Will!" But it was too late, the board crashed down and landed on Buffy's feet.

"Ow!" Buffy pouted.

"Oops!" Willow giggled.

"It's not funny."

"Yes, it is." Willow bent down and picked up the board and held it in place for Buffy again. The board was chipped where it had broken off from the fastening, but still usable.

"It's because of Tara isn't?"

"Um, well...yes." Willow hesitated.

"You like her?" It sounded more like a statement, than a question.

"Of course I like her, she's a wonderful person." Willow said matter-of-factly.

"No I mean..." Off Willow's confused look, Buffy relented, "never mind. So you wanna keep rooming with Tara?"

"Yeah...yeah, I do." Buffy finished screwing one end of the shelf, and moved to the other, so Willow let go. She moved out of the way and sat down on the bed again. "We had a really good talk last night, and I sort of promised her I'd never leave her, and I don't want to either."

Willow sat in silence while Buffy finished with the shelf but then she sat down opposite Willow. "What do you mean you promised her?"

Willow was quiet for a moment while gathering her thoughts. A slow smile spread over her face. "She has the cutest smile, you know." Buffy nodded. "And she was ducking her head — hiding — in that cute way she does when she gets shy or embarrassed, and I was like 'Hey, don't hide, you have a beautiful smile,' and she said it was because she's not used to all of this, and when I asked what this was she said having a friend, someone telling her she had a beautiful smile, and not running away when they found out she was a witch...Wait, I told you she was a witch right?" Again Buffy nodded. "Oh good, well, after she said all of those things I just kept thinking 'How on earth is that possible?' Anyone would be lucky to have her as a friend, and hello! She has the cutest smile ever, how can you not comment on it?" Willow sighed. "I think she's been really lonely Buffy and I'm afraid that if I do move in with you, she'll draw away from us, and I don't want that. I want to be her friend."

***

Willow walked back up to her room and opened the door. Tara was lying on her bed reading a book. "Hey." Willow kicked of her sneakers, and they landed with a 'thud' next to her closet. "H-hi Willow." Tara sat up and placed the book on her nightstand. "Do you, um, n-need any help with packing?"

"Why? Am I going somewhere?"

"Oh, I just figured you'd be moving in with Buffy."

"And leave this heaven? Now why would I wanna do that Tara?" Willow made her way over to Tara's bed. "Scoot over." Tara complied and Willow lay down next to her. They stared at the ceiling for a moment.

"So you're not leaving?"

"Nope."

"You're staying here?"

"Yup."

"Good."

:lol That was hilarious! Buffy figuring out that Willow loves Tara before Willow does? That's kind of cool. But oh man, did I laugh... don't really know why, but this is funny!

Willow: Hey Buff. One more thing. Buffy: Yeah? Willow: I’m gay. Buffy: Okay, Will. Xander owes me ten bucks.

Hey tinnakaren!

I love your vignette! Buffy figuring out what Willow wants before Willow does is, IMHO, highly improbable considering Buffy's propensity to be somewhat self-absorbed. But that just makes it all the more humorous.

I have several questions for you, however:

  1. First of all, does Tara know that she, herself, is gay?

If she doesn't then when Willow starts making romantic admissions/insinuations to her, then lots of angsty goodness can result from her conflicting feelings over thinking that she should want guys while she really wants Willow, and Willow can be right there with her, a friend who can both comfort her and at the same time be comforted by her, and a potential lover as well.

In almost all of the W/T stories that I've read, at least one of the two girls was very aware of her true sexual preference, and helped the other to discover her romantic destiny with women (or more specifically, A woman). However, I have yet to read a good story in which BOTH women think that they are straight, and then fall in love with one another while grappling with their own expectations and presumptions.

If Tara is just as much in denial as Willow is about their attraction to one another, then it would make for a great, fresh new story filled with angsty goodness and real emotional/intellectual struggles.

  2. your story: Is it going to start BEFORE or AFTER the vignette?

If it starts before, then Yay! Background-y goodness *g*

  3. If after, how are you going to have Willow aproach Tara with her newly-found discovery? Is she going to blurt it out in a long, drawn-out babble fest that puts everything out in the open all at once? will Willow take things slow, try to romance Tara and woo her over to the notion of loving a certain redhead? Or will she tell Tara that she's gay, and let her know that she's interested in a girl that she really likes, but isn't sure how to approach her?

  4. Ok, so Willow has admitted to herself intellectually that she's in love with Tara, but has she dealt the emotional/intellectual ramifications of this fact as well?

Though I've had no experience in this matter myself, I would imagine that the hardest part of coming out is doing so to one's self. Everything that you thought made sense wouldn't any more, and it wouldn't exactly be a piece of cake to deal with.

  5. Also, will she deal with this self-admission by herself, or with Tara?

I have a few more ideas/questions, but I gtg to work *pouts*

later!

Postby tinnakaren » Wed Feb 04, 2004 5:46 pm

Good lord Ryan... this was just a small vignette - that's a whole lotta questions for a small vignette :) j/k

Well, to answer your questions.. you'll just have to wait and see *evil grin* ... no, not really. I'm not evil.

1) Does Tara knows she's gay. To the best of my knowledge...Eh, I don't wanna give that up. What I can say is that Tara's had a rough life, really rough, and has had to deal with issues far more nefarious than the question of her sexuality.

2) When does the story start? Oh, Before baby - no question - chapter 1 starts with Willow and Buffy moving into the dorms. I'm a big fan of build-up ...

Answering the rest would give too much away. I don't even think I have answers to those questions yet. But you've brought up some great points - it really made me think. Even made me make a last minute change to chapter 1 :) Thanks.

Oh, and about Buffy's self-absorption - I've watched every episode till the last 3 min of Seeing Red, turned off the DVD after "hope so, that's the best part" :) - and I watched them over a relatively short period, and what I found out was that I thought Buffy was a great character in the beginning - to me she had a really lovable quality, but she lost it due to some bad plot lines and writing - so when I write Buffy, I write her like I see her - like I would want her to be, you know?

Hi,

I finally got around to reading this story, and I must say, I love it.

It's good to see your Buffy isn't totally clueless. Are you going to continue?

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.

crikey! from a tiny little vignette to pages and pages of W/T goodness. I'm such a sucker for S4 Willow and Tara and you've handled all of the characterizations (even Buffy) beautifully. just the right level of humor and I'm soooo glad Oz isn't in the picture so there's none of that...stuff. plus, I'm really enjoying the different dynamic with Tara being brought into the gang before the relationship with Willow progresses to something romantic.

and... Fucking Amal!!! extra credit for including my fav film of all time.

thank you for a wonderfully stress-free (well, okay, there's stress, but it's the good kind) fic. *sigh*. I so needed this today.

lipkandy: Crikey - couldn't agree with you more. This is the longest thing I've written ever since I was 4 when I wrote pages and pages of my name - I had just learned how, you see. And who needs an Oz these days anyway? I'm glad you're enjoying this...makes me all kinds of happy.

Absolutely lurve this fic! Want more! :clap

I, too, think Buffy was an essentially great character masked and weakened by bad plot and writing, particularly during the later seasons. To me it's very believable that a pre-Riley Buffy, one with more interest in keeping her high school friendships intact, would have noticed something a little 'sparkly' about Willow's attitude towards Tara. Plus, the absence of Oz would have left her with fewer preconceived notions about Willow's sexuality.

Really like your characterization here, particularly when it comes to Tara's thoughts. They really show the Tara behind the stutter and the self-confidence issues. Quirky and kind, but also deeply hurt by her past.

Keep writing!

Chapter 2: Vampire 101

Postby tinnakaren » Mon Feb 23, 2004 7:28 am

I finished this last night, and it's already beta-ed. Amazing. Thanks Charlie!

Chapter 2: Vampire 101

Willow and Tara sat on Willow's bed, an array of cards between them. It was early Friday evening and the sun was just about to set, which caused an orange glow to be cast through the open window. And since there were no classes to worry about the next morning they decided to forgo any reading for a little fun.

Tara looked at the cards in her hand then over at Willow, studying her, then glanced back at her cards. "Do you have any...eights?"

Willow rolled her eyes and groaned, but handed Tara all three eight cards. "Here."

"Yay!" Tara placed the three cards she got from Willow along with the eight from her hand on the bed. "I guess that means it's my go again," she giggled.

"Do you have any...jacks?"

"Oh my god...here!" Willow thrust another three cards to Tara.

Tara grinned, "Thanks." After she placed the win on the bed she asked, "how about some sixes?"

"No! Go fish lady!" Willow gleefully exclaimed. "My turn...give me them twos missy."

Tara frowned, but gave Willow the pair of twos she had in her hand.

"Only two cards?" Willow asked with a disappointed scowl. Tara shrugged her shoulders. "You've been asking about a two constantly...how can you not have three cards?" Willow pouted. "I think you're cheating. You're cheating aren't ya, with the a whole ball 'o cheatin...ness."

"Willow! I am not cheating!" Tara proclaimed. Willow stared at the blonde intently, studying her. She'd gotten to know Tara pretty well these first two weeks and she knew when she was being all sneaky. She recognized that mischievous glint in Tara's eye immediately.

"Oh yeah? Show me your cards?" Willow challenged.

"No!"

"I demand you show me your cards!" Willow stated, a smile tugging on her lips.

"Not a chance." Tara shook her head and drew both of her hands closer to her, shielding the cards.

"Come on, show me." Willow laughed and grabbed a hold of Tara's right hand, trying to pull it down to reveal the cards.

"Willow! Get over yourself, I'm not cheating." Tara laughed and resisted the pull. Finally she let Willow pull her right hand down, relinquishing her hold on the cards at the same time, leaving them all in her left hand.

"Hey! Now that was just sneaky." Willow stated, eyeing Tara's left hand.

Tara held her left hand behind her, away from Willow. "I'm not showing you my cards Willow. If I show you you'll know what cards I have, which will leave this game slightly to your advantage."

"That's insane logic if I ever heard any."

Willow made eye contact and raised her eyebrows. Tara raised one eyebrow in reply. Willow smirked. Tara bit her lower lip. Then Willow made a quick grab for Tara's hand. She caught it before Tara could retreat. They both snickered as they wrestled.

"Show me those cards or I'll..." Willow threatened.

"Or you'll what?"

"Or I'll..." Willow pounced on Tara, sending the cards flying from Tara's hand onto the floor. She attacked with nubile fingers, tickling Tara all over.

"Willow!" Tara laughed, and squirmed underneath the redhead. "No...no...please, stop...no more!" She guffawed.

Willow laughed along with the blonde, and managed to pull Tara's hands above her head, holding them there in place with one hand while tickling her with the other. She straddled Tara, who writhed between her legs, trying to twist and turn to get the redhead off her.

"Will...stop, I give..."

"Ah-ha!" Willow grinned and stopped tickling. She brought her other hand up above Tara's head and held both her hands in hers, interlacing their fingers.

"No more cheating?"

"I didn't cheat!"

Willow raised one eyebrow, and quickly tickled Tara's sides one more time.

"Ah!" Tara squealed. Willow grabbed hold of Tara's hands again and held her down on the bed. She leaned a little to the right to look down from the bed. Tara's cards were in disarray next to the bed and in the pile a two of hearts looked up at Willow. "I knew it!" Willow exclaimed. "You sneaky little..." Tara smirked at the redhead.

The door to their room opened abruptly. "Will, it's ti...oh my god!"

***

When Buffy entered Willow and Tara's room to get Willow for patrol, the scene before her was definitely not something she was expecting. Willow and Tara were on Willow's bed. Tara was lying on her back, her head by the foot of the bed, with Willow straddling her, facing the door. They were both breathing heavily , slightly flushed and Willow was leaning over Tara holding both of her hands above her head. Nope, not something Buffy was expecting at all .

"Buffy!" Willow quickly sat back on her heels and Tara raised her self up on her elbows looking behind her shoulder at Buffy. "Um, hi Buffy."

Buffy looked at Tara, then at Willow, then at Tara, then at Willow...her eyes moved rapidly back and forth in a state of confusion.

"Um, hey." Were they? Buffy thought. "What's going on?" Buffy asked awkwardly.

"Hmm?" Willow sounded.

Buffy moved her index finger in small circles indicating Willow and Tara. "What's all this?"

"Uh, what do you mean?" Willow asked. She wasn't sure what Buffy was referring to. What's all what? She took in Buffy's first reaction, then her question and finally her and Tara's compromising positions and... Does she think we were... "Oh. Oh! No no no..." She quickly scrambled back, off of Tara. Tara followed Willow's retreat with a frown then her eyes suddenly widened. "Oh! Um, no."

"No?" Buffy asked.

"No!" Willow shook her head from left to right.

"No." Tara added.

"No?" Buffy asked again.

"No!" Willow and Tara said in unison.

Then there was silence. The three people took turns making clumsy eye contact with one or the other...then there was snickering.

"You thought me and Tara...with the...and the...I can see where...but the..." Willow over gestured. She chuckled and shook her head. That's crazy.

"Yeah Buffy, w-what were you thinking?" Tara questioned .

"Well, you were all with the straddling and the heavy breathing... what's a girl to think."

"How about something a little less penthouse-y maybe?" Willow countered.

"Hey! Just be glad that I'm not Xander. Then there would have been ogling and drooling, and probably a request for an encore . And eww, I just got a scary visual."

Scary visual, huh? Willow thought. She glanced over at Tara's still lying form. Yup, got the visual, and yeah...it's a little scary. What with the straddling and the leaning over, and the heaving chest and...

Willow quickly averted her eyes away from Tara. She could feel herself starting to blush, and her stomach was fluttering. Huh? Now that's unexpected. She could remember feeling like this once before. It was that last day of summer before junior year. She and Xander had been eating ice cream and she had gotten some of it on her nose. Xander had leaned in, and almost kissed her until they were interrupted by Buffy. And now she's interrupting again...bad Buffy. Wait, what? Willow was confusing herself with these thoughts, and she needed a distraction.

"Say, did you say Xander? He's here?" Willow suddenly piped up.

Buffy had noticed the emotions filtering through Willow's face. She knew something was up with her friend. Maybe they could discuss it while patrolling?

"Yup, he's waiting in my room — ready to go patr...eey?"

"Patrey?" Tara asked and looked at Buffy. "What's patrey?"

"Um...party?" Yes, party! Go brain! "I meant to say party."

"Party?" Willow mouthed behind Tara. Buffy winced at her abhorrently bad choice of word. Willow got up and walked over to her closet. Buffy's slaying gig could be dangerous, very dangerous, but she was thankful for the distraction. There were thoughts and feelings she was having, ones she didn't think she should be having. She put on her sneakers and her jacket, then turned and looked at Tara. Whatever it is, it doesn't feel wrong.

Tara sat up and turned to lean on the wall, knees drawn up to her chest.

"Okay, I'm ready." Willow said to no one in particular.

"To go to the... party?" Tara questioned and smirked.

"Uh, um, yes?" Willow hesitated and looked at Buffy for reinforcement. Buffy just shrugged her shoulders.

"You see Tara, the party is uh...well, it's kind of a gathering... of um people with similar... interests and-" Willow twiddled with her fingers, trying to come up with something, anything, but wasn't succeeding.

Will, you're sinking. "Gee, Will...look at the time, we gotta go." Buffy said and dragged Willow out the door. "See you at the Bronze in three hours Tara — be careful on the way. Later." She yelled as the door closed behind her.

Tara stared at the closed door. She could faintly hear Buffy spit out "Similar interests Will?" and Willow countering with "Party Buffy?" from the hallway. She shook her head and sighed. Wherever they were going, it seemed obvious to Tara that she wasn't welcome. Tears threatened to form, but she took a deep breath and swallowed the lump in her throat, forcing both back down.

***

"Buff...Will!" Xander chocked out. The vampire on top of him had just finished beating the crap out of the dark-haired boy and was now choking him as it leaned down preparing to bite. Buffy was busy with three vampires and Willow was still on the ground after having gotten the wind knocked out of her earlier by that same vamp. She scrambled to her feet and grabbed the stake next to her, which she had dropped earlier. She ran over towards Xander and jumped on the vampire's back thrusting the stake through skin, muscle and bone, and finally the heart. The vampire exploded between them and Willow was left hanging in mid air. She plopped down on Xander with an, "Oof."

The redhead was sprawled over Xander, her head resting on his chest. "You okay?" she mumbled.

"Yeah. I'm okay." Xander croaked out. He wrapped his hands around his best friend embracing her. "Thanks Will."

"You're welcome." Willow reciprocated the hug for a minute. She waited for the familiar tingle that always accompanied a Xander-hug. She had felt it the first time when she was 13 and it hadn't gone since. There was a feeling of warmth and security and a tiny bit of arousal. She closed her eyes and waited, but nothing happened. Huh, does this mean I'm over him? Willow frowned, then pulled back and crawled off of Xander.

They dusted themselves down as they got up . Vampire dust covered their clothes and most of their hair and Willow shook her head from side to side, she brushed her hand through it, in an attempt to rid herself of the nasty ash. Buffy stood a little way ahead twirling Mr. Pointy in her right hand after she had finished off the three vamps.

"You guys alright?" She asked as she noticed her two best friends scrambling to their feet. She walked over to them.

"We're good. Willow here saved me." Xander said proudly and patted Willow on the back.

"Go Will!" the slayer announced as she put her arm around Willow's shoulder.

"Yes, yes, go me. Yay." Willow said dryly.

"Hmm, you don't sound too pleased?"

"It's just, you know...the whole Xander almost dying thing. Kinda takes the fun out of slaying."

"Oh." An awkward, somber silence fell over the three monster fighters. They glanced back and forth amongst each other and shared a thankful smile. They were all grateful for the friendships they had and even though they didn't say it often or showed it directly, actions spoke louder than words. However, sometimes wry humor and mocking quips were just what they needed to get through the day.

"Hey!" Xander suddenly piped up. "None of this somber business alright — I'm alright, Will's alright...we're alright, right?"

"Right..." Buffy hesitated.

"So, let's stop thinking about what could have happened and let's start thinking about what the hell I'm going to do about Anya."

"Anya?" Willow looked up at Xander. "Why are we talking about Anya all of a sudden?"

"Right...I didn't tell you guys did I?" Xander explained. Both Willow and Buffy shook their heads. "Well, she's back, and she came to see me, to...you know, see me."

"Um, seeing you how?" Buffy asked, although she wasn't sure if she really wanted to know.

"Well, nakedness was mentioned."

"Xander! Eww, too much information," the slayer whined, and Willow nodded in agreement.

"Eww? Me naked equals eww?" Xander complained.

Buffy and Willow exchanged sheepish looks, and shrugged their shoulders. Xander felt his manliness dissipate a little more with each added second they kept the expression on their faces. "Gee, thanks," he mumbled.

"Xander, you really set yourself up for that one."

They left the cemetery and headed towards the dorms. Buffy and Willow needed to change clothes before going to the Bronze. Their current outfits smelled like mud, dust and grass topped off with a little death. They reeked. And Xander wasn't faring much better in that department.

Willow slowly opened the door to her room, still regretting her lying to Tara, and not looking forward to the confrontation — having to lie even more. The room was dark and empty; Tara wasn't there. Willow didn't know if she should feel relieved or guilty. She quickly changed clothes, and then ran to the bathroom to freshen up. As she walked downstairs to meet up with Buffy again, the slight relief she had felt was rapidly being replaced with guilt, and growing with every step she took. She knocked on Buffy's door and when Buffy opened up the first thing Willow said was, "I wanna tell Tara."

"Oh?" No one ever accused Buffy of being very articulate.

***

Buffy and Willow met up with Xander in the lobby and they walked to his car. Xander drove them to the Bronze.

"You know, that vampire kinda kicked my ass. I think I'll skip the Bronze tonight," Xander said as they pulled up outside the club.

"But why? We were gonna hang out and do the whole pool thing." Willow pouted.

"Will, numero uno — I stink. Numero dos — my arm is hurting, bad. And numero tres — well, I stink. I've had my manliness shot down enough for one night don't ya think? Don't feel like getting shot down further for smelly B.O. too."

"Xand, we were only joking." Willow promised. Xander looked over to her and nodded his head. "I know Will." He pulled her towards him and kissed her forehead. "I'll see you guys later."

"You sure?"

"Yeah, I'm good."

Buffy and Willow got out of the car and went inside the building. A full-packed Bronze greeted them and Willow stopped. "What's up?" Buffy asked. "I think I'll wait outside for Tara. It's kinda crowded in here and I don't want her to miss us, you know? " Willow answered.

"Sure thing, Will. Just be careful. If anything bumpy comes along, run inside, scream...or you know, come get me?"

***

Willow was sitting on top of some wooden crates that had been stacked together outside the Bronze when she heard her name being called further down the alley. She jumped off to investigate and saw Harmony come jogging towards her.

"Harmony, hey! I haven't seen you since —"

"Since graduation." Harmony interrupted. "Big snake huh?"

"Yeah." Willow replied, with an insipid undertone. Big snake really covers it. "So, what have you been up to since school-go-boom?"

"Well, I was gonna go to France. But I didn't. I was dying to see the stores."

"Yeah, and the museums." Willow responded excitedly, but not for long.

"Museums?"

"Yeah, I heard they have them." Willow said dryly. Then a little more playfully she added, "You know, just a rumor you pick up on the streets."

Harmony laughed. "You were always so funny Willow. You haven't changed a bit."

"No, you neither."

"Oh, maybe a little." Harmony replied and took a step towards Willow. She vamped out and grabbed a hold of Willow. Harmony pulled Willow's head to the side and sank her teeth into Willow's flesh.

***

Tara walked briskly to the Bronze, following Willow's earlier instruction of keeping to well lit and populated paths. No shortcuts — Willow had been adamant about that. Whatever the two friends had been doing earlier tonight, in secrecy, Tara didn't care. Willow had invited her the day before to come to the Bronze with them, and she planned on being there, no matter what. She knew there were things Buffy and Willow didn't want to share with her, and she understood that. They had been friends for a long time — and she had only known them for two weeks.

When she got closer to the Bronze — the black and white sign announcing its proximity — she saw Willow sitting outside waiting for her. Her dismay from earlier that night vanished at the sight. Willow looked adorable as she sat on the wooden crates, swinging her legs from side to side. Tara saw Willow jump off the crates and walk further down the alley next to the Bronze. A blonde girl approached her and they seemed to know each other. They laughed and the blonde leaned closer to Willow... kissing her neck?

Tara stopped walking. Oh. Willow's gay? And she obviously has a girlfriend and didn't think she could tell me. Tara started to turn around but then she heard Willow yelp, and it wasn't a good yelp. Tara tried focusing on Willow. She closed her eyes and blocked out everything except the redhead. An image of Willow appeared in her mind. Red hair, sparkling green eyes, cheeky grin and a bouncy playfulness, then surprise, terror, pain...Willow! That's no freakin' girlfriend.

Tara ran as fast as she could towards Willow and finally saw that she wasn't necking with that other girl, that bitch of a blonde was attacking her. Tara thought of the first spell that came to mind — "Ignis Incende!" A small flame burst into life, growing in strength as it covered Harmony's jacket.

Harmony snarled and pulled away from Willow, pushing her down. Willow's head hit the ground, hard. The last thing she saw before her world turned black was Tara running towards her. Harmony stripped off her jacket and tossed it on the ground. Her hands were singed where they fire had caught her. She growled at the intruder — at Tara - stomping on the jacket at the same time to put out the flames. "Hey!" She yelled. "That was my favorite jacket you bitch!"

Tara ignored her and went to Willow. She knelt down next to the redhead and cradled her head in her hands. "Will?" She whispered, swallowing the lump in her throat. The redhead was unconscious. Blood seeped from her neck wound, and from the fresh cut at the back of her head. Tara used the sleeve of her shirt to stop the flow of blood from Willow's neck. The bite was thankfully shallow and hadn't cut into her carotid artery. Tara checked for her pulse, and panicked when she couldn't find it — but Willow's steady breathing calmed her. She smiled sadly, running her fingers over Willow's face. Few locks of hair were in Willow's eyes so she brushed them away. She took a deep breath then checked for Willow's pulse again — and found it. It was weak — Tara knew she'd have to get Willow to the hospital soon.

"Hey, loser, I'm talking to you. You owe me a jacket!" Harmony complained.

Tara snapped her head towards Harmony, steeling her gaze on the vampire. "Willow's still alive, so you're safe for now. But if you ever, ever , come near her again, I'll kill you."

"Fine, take care of your girlfriend. But you know, I have a boyfriend, and he's not gonna like that you were mean to me."

Harmony turned around swiftly, and stalked into the night.

So there are vampires in Sunnydale. Who knew? Tara thought as she watched Harmony walk away. She turned her attention back to Willow. Willow knew. And I think she was trying to protect me. A flash of memories came to Tara...

"Yeah, apparently she escaped from a mental hospital."

"She's been busy with pa-"

"No notes for the sl-"

"Ready to patr...eey."

Tara chuckled at the last one — it had been pretty pathetic. So is this what you do at nights Willow — fight vampires? Willow didn't strike her as the legendary slayer she'd read about. And she doubted a slayer wouldn't have easily killed that vampire bitch queen — if only to stop her from talking. Which just made her admire Willow even more. Brave Willow — Willow the Brave. It has a nice ring to it. Just then Willow the Brave stirred and Tara's heart skipped a beat. "Willow?"

Willow's eyes flickered open and she groaned. "Ugh...the frogs ate the puppy Tara. You have to stop them."

"Okay Will." Tara smiled. If this would have been anyone other than Willow, Tara would have suspected brain damage — but she had grown accustomed to Willow's subconscious ridiculous ramblings. She had even purposely woken up a few times before Willow's alarm clock went off just to listen to Willow's early morning babble.

Willow looked up at Tara. She was hovering above her, cradling her, and softly stroking her hair. Willow sighed and closed her eyes once more . Tara thinking she might be losing conscious again lightly shook her. "Will, stay awake! You can't go to sleep okay," she implored.

"Mmm...okay. I'm not sleepy." Willow yawned. She wrapped her arms around Tara and pulled her down, "snuggle with me, baby." Tara let the redhead pull her down willingly. She needed this too. The thought of losing Willow was too unbearable to even contemplate. She'd only known her for two weeks, but already the redhead had become her closest friend. Only her mother had known her better. Tara closed her eyes and reveled in the hug, but when Willow's arms loosened in the embrace the blonde pulled back and helped Will up to a sitting position. She knew the importance of keeping the redhead alert; falling asleep was a big no-no. "Will, come on. We have to go to the hospital."

"Okay." Willow sighed.

Tara chuckled. "Come on sweetie, let's get you up." She assisted Willow with getting to her feet and held her as she wobbled.

"Wow, head rush. And can I just say 'oww'" Willow grabbed the back of her head. It was throbbing and she had the biggest headache. When she found a wet spot, she brought her hand back. Her fingers were bloody.

"Owie." Willow pouted.

Tara smiled. "Yes, owie Will. Which is why we're going to the hospital now." Willow nodded her acquiescence . Tara led them towards the entrance of the Bronze. "Let's call a cab from inside, you're in no condition to walk."

***

When they got inside they found Buffy playing pool with her newest boy-toy potential, Parker Abrams. Willow pulled Buffy aside and told her how she had been attacked by a 'paler-than-usual' Harmony. Buffy ditched Parker and went to the hospital with Willow and Tara.

It took 3 stitches to close the cut on Willow's head. Thankfully the doctor hadn't shaven a big patch around the cut, so it could be hidden. She was diagnosed with a mild concussion after the doctor performed an MRI scan and a neurological exam then was ordered to stay in bed for the rest of the weekend. The doctor also made her promise to come back if any headache, nausea or other symptoms arose. When Buffy asked what those other symptoms were, the doctor handed her a pamphlet containing all the information she needed. Buffy glanced through the pamphlet with Tara, and they both agreed to keep an eye on the redhead. Willow's neck wound was finally cleaned and bandaged and the three girls returned to the dorms.

Buffy camped out in Willow and Tara's room that night and she and Tara took turns fussing over Willow.

Buffy: "Are you thirsty?"

Willow: "A little."

Buffy: "I'll g..."

Tara: "I'll get it!"

Tara: "Any nausea?"

Willow: "No."

Tara: "Headache?"

Willow: "No, I'm good, thanks."

Buffy: "How about now? Any nausea?"

Willow: "Holy Moses, No!"

Buffy: "Geez Will, no need to get snippy."

Willow: "You wanna see snippy?"

Morning came and Willow was the first one to wake up. It was still dark outside, and when Willow looked at her alarm clock the red digits blinked 6:37. Eugh! She was ensconced in a nest of blankets and pillows — courtesy of her two caretakers the night before. She felt hot, sweaty and a little nauseous. She suspected it being due to the heavy covering around her, rather than the attack last night, so she kicked the blankets off and caught her first deep breath since the night before. A glass of water sat on her nightstand, and she reached for it and gulped it down. The nausea quickly dissipated.

She had been dreaming about the attack and she was actually rather pissed off at herself for letting Harmony, of all people, rattle her. Her dream flashed before her eyes — Harmony vamping out and biting her; Harmony hitting her causing her to crash to the ground; Tara running towards her casting a spell ; Harmony bursting into flames... Wait, what? Willow shot up in her bed. Tara cast a spell? She looked across the room where Tara was sleeping fitfully. She was twisting and turning in the bed, mumbling in her sleep. Ignis incende! Willow heard in her head. Oh my god, Tara! She saved me!

Willow felt an urge to be next to the blonde so she slowly got out of her bed, careful not to disturb the sleeping, snoring slayer on the floor — a sleepy slayer, was a cranky slayer — and made her way across the room. Tara was lying on her stomach, hugging the pillow and her face was turned towards Willow... which makes it so much easier to stare at her... Wait, what am I doing? Willow wanted to crawl into bed with Tara. She remembered feeling scared in her dream, terrified, but seeing Tara had made it all go away. It was strange. On the floor the slayer slept, and would be awake in a second if any evil were lurking, to protect her, yet she felt safe with Tara. Willow eyed the space on the bed next to Tara with longing. Oh come on Rosenberg, just do it. What's the worst thing that can happen? She wakes up and sees you snuggling up to her. What is she going to do — kick you outta bed? It's not like you're doing anything naughty. Willow nodded at her internal reasoning. It seemed to make sense, and the sooner she accepted it the sooner she'd be all snuggle-y and safe with Tara.

Willow crawled into the bed, careful not to disturb the blonde, or get to close and accidentally have Tara roll into her, or even... on top of her. The blonde was still a little restless and all Willow wanted to do was calm her, comfort her and to say thank you. Tara was mumbling softly in her sleep; Willow could hear a word here, and a word there but it didn't really make sense. "N-no", "Mama", "P-please d-don't-" That got Willow's attention. Subtlety be damned! She scooted closer and took hold of Tara's hand. She stroked her thumb over the back of it in a soothing manner, hoping to give the blonde some comfort. "Sssshh, it's alright." Willow whispered and softly kissed Tara on the forehead. Tara visibly calmed down in front of her and stopped turning. Her breathing changed and her eyes flickered opened. She looked into Willow's eyes, a curious expression gracing her features. "Willow?" she whispered.

"Hey," the redhead whispered back with a smile.

The last thing Tara remembered before falling asleep was watching Willow on the other side of the room, sleeping in her nest of blankets. She certainly didn't remember crossing the room and crawling into bed with Willow, so that meant Willow must have crossed over. But not like in that TV show. It's just a regular crossing a room kind of over. And why am I thinking about this? And what is Willow doing in my bed? "Are you alright?"

"I'm perfect...You saved me." Willow awed at Tara.

"What?"

"You saved me." Willow repeated. "You made that vacuous vamp go away...you're my hero," she smiled.  I mean you're my heroine. See me, all with the political correctness?

"H-heroine ?" Tara blushed slightly.

"Yeah, you're my quiet, unassuming, all with the witchy action heroine...with a cute smile to boot." Willow giggled and Tara joined her.

"You remember?"

"I remember." Willow nodded. Sure she remembered. Tara saved her life. Tara was her life-saver. Heh, life-savers, yummy. But before Willow could indulge in any juicy, tasty candy-like comparisons she quickly added, "Thank you."

"You're w-welcome," Tara whispered. This was turning into an unexpected, yet welcomed visit. Willow was being very accepting of her Wicca heritage and maybe that meant Tara could finally unpack some of her boxes. She'd kept all of her magic supplies hidden in her closet, and some under her bed, and had been unable to practice like she wanted. Initially she had signed up for a single dorm room, but in the end, her budget hadn't covered that kind of luxury. She was glad though. Practicing her magic still made her feel like she was connected to her mother, but it didn't compare to the feeling of being Willow's friend. She doubted she would have met the wonderful redhead if they hadn't been assigned as roommates. And now, with Willow knowing she was a witch, and actually sounding proud, she hoped she could start practicing her faith again. She hated keeping it a secret from Willow, and it seemed like Willow had hated keeping her nightly activities a secret as well.

Willow watched as Tara fell silent, deep in thought. Her expression changed from surprised to sad. Then finally she looked up at Willow again, with such hope in her eyes. The urge to hug Tara came back ten-fold and Willow couldn't fight it. "I, um, Tara?" Willow pleaded. "Can I...can I just hug you now?"

A shy smile from Tara was all the confirmation Willow needed, but she still asked, "Okay?"

Tara nodded and Willow snuggled closer to the blonde, wrapping her arm around Tara's waist pulling her near her. Tara laid her head on Willow's shoulder and after careful consideration on where to place her arm she rested it around Willow's waist, completing the embrace.

Re: Chapter 2: Vampire 101 - Continued

Postby tinnakaren » Mon Feb 23, 2004 7:33 am

The rays of the sun, peeking through the blinds, tickled Buffy awake. She opened one eye, and closed it, opened the other, and closed it, then did a full body stretch and yawned. Her eyes fluttered open and she sat up on her elbows. Why am I on the floor? She pouted, but then she remembered. Oh, right. Will. She looked up onto Willow's bed and noticing it empty she raised an eyebrow. Will? Where did ya go? She frowned, deep in thought, but then she turned her head to the right and looked over at Tara's bed. The red hair peeking up from the covers made her smile. There ya are. Buffy returned to lying on her back . Another frown settled in. She looked back towards Tara's bed. If Will's over there, where's Tara? "Ahh," the slayer groaned. Too much thinking in the morning is not good for my complexion. This is why I didn't sign up for morning classes...and damn, I have to pee. But I don't wanna get up. I'm the slayer — I can hold it...only I really can't. The slayer groaned again and got up. She walked straight out the door and headed towards the bathroom at the end of the hall.

Buffy returned a few minutes later and when she did she found out where Tara was. Uh-huh... Buffy thought as she saw the two roommates asleep under the covers, snuggling. Tara was sprawled over Willow's chest and the redhead held the blonde firmly against her. Buffy smiled at the sight. They look kinda adorable. She went to Willow's bed and crawled under the covers. Since Will's not using it — I might as well get comfortable. Then she fluffed the pillows and kicked the blankets around until she found an acceptable position. Ahh, an actual mattress. No more hardwood floor for Buffy. She closed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep. She took a deep breath and exhaled. Then she waited. Nothing. Huh? Usually that did the trick. She tried again. Deep breath and... What in the world is going on? Is my brain actually keeping me awake? Buffy felt a tingling at the back of her head. That same tingling she got when something bothered her and she couldn't figure it out, or when she had to do math. Well she obviously wasn't doing math right now so that meant only one thing. Oh phooey. I wanted to sleep some more.

The slayer turned on her side and faced Willow and Tara. They were fast asleep, and still intertwined with each other. Buffy smiled sadly. She could remember the last time she was wrapped around someone. I wonder what he's doing now? Angel was still a touchy subject for her. He had left so abruptly — again — and again there was no real closure. She knew it would never work between the two of them, the term 'safe sex' came to her mind unbidden and she laughed. Now that's never going to happen . She wouldn't call bringing Angelus back being safe. But even with the lack of sex it had still been wonderful. They had snuggled and slept next to each other, kinda like Will and Tara over there , and it had been almost as satisfying. Almost. But the snuggling had been nice, really nice. It had been all warm and cuddly and hot and sexy and frustrating and sexy and... Buffy looked over at Willow and Tara again. They were being awfully snuggle-y. Intimately snuggle-y. She couldn't remember snuggling with her friends like that. What if...oh my! She remembered the conversation the three of them had had yesterday. First they're with the straddling and now the snuggling? 'No' my ass. Willow so needs to spill. With that thought in mind the slayer was finally able to fall asleep again.

"You sure about this?"

Tara looked up from her position on the bed. Willow and Buffy stood tall in front of her. Both had their arms crossed over their chest and a hesitant look on their face. Was she sure about this? The cons outweighed the pros by million to one but yes, she was sure. Like Willow said, it was a good fight, and she wanted to help. Determination flashed in Tara's eyes, and she nodded. "Yes, I'm sure."

"Alright. But just remember, you can back out whenever you want." Buffy reiterated from before. "This is not a life-time commitment." She paused, then added flippantly, "well, not for you guys — me on the other hand..." she shrugged her shoulders, "...and Tara, you're just about my favorite person right now. I can't say this enough but thank you so very much. A hurt Will is just bad — very, very bad." Buffy placed her arm around the redhead's shoulder. "I kinda love you, you know that right?" Willow nodded. "I know." They shared a relieved smile then Buffy said to Tara. "We want you in the Scooby gang Tara — but like I said, you can say no or back out at any time." Buffy stopped and looked expectantly at Tara.

A brilliant smile graced Tara's features. They wanted her. It was a wonderful feeling. "I know, but now that I know, I want to help, you know? I can't suddenly not know that I know, um, you know?" Tara grinned.

"Will! You've infected her," Buffy laughed, "she's starting to talk like you."

"And that's a bad thing?" Willow questioned.

"No, actually it's incredibly cute" Buffy said, "but anyway, let's get this started." She walked over to her open closet and picked up her black gym bag. She dropped it on the bed next to Tara and reached in for a stake. "This," she said, and twirled the stake around, "is Mr. Pointy." She handed the stake to Tara who accepted it. "You will not be using Mr. Pointy — F.Y.I. — he's mine. But for practice you can try him out."

"I'm not sure if Mr. Pointy is for me," Tara said and handed Buffy back her stake, "but he's very, um, nice."

"You don't like Mr. Pointy?" Buffy questioned and stared at Tara with a baffled expression. Who doesn't like Mr. Pointy?

"Buffy, not everyone is obsessed with that stake like you. Here," Willow said and grabbed another stake from the bag, "you can use this one, I whittled it myself." She proudly handed the stake to Tara.

Tara smirked. Buffy may be obsessed with Mr. Pointy, but Willow seemed awfully proud of her stake. "Um, thanks Will." She twirled the stake in her right hand, getting a feel for it. "So," she said and stood up, "how does this work?" She made a hand motion with the stake that looked more like a wave than a thrust.

Willow chuckled, "here, let me show you." She walked behind Tara and grabbed a hold of her right arm. "It's like this." Willow lifted Tara's arm up a bit then moved it in a quick stabbing motion. "And aim for the heart."

"Okay." Tara tried it again.

"Yeah, that's it," Willow said from behind her. She leaned in closer and whispered in Tara's ear. "A very successful thrust."

"Um," Tara started and laughed. "Successful thrust huh?" She took one step and turned around. "So, um... So it's like this?" She thrust the stake in Willow's direction stopping directly in front of her heart. Willow looked down at the stake in front of her. "Yeah, exactly like this," she whispered.

Buffy watched the entire scene enfold with a knowing look. Willow was so crushing. But she'd never known the redhead to be so daring. Successful thrust Will? Are you trying to seduce the girl or what? She wasn't sure what Tara was feeling. Willow had told her that she was usually able to tell what Tara was feeling just but looking into her eyes, but Buffy didn't know Tara that well. Oh well.

"So Tara. Ready to patrol?"

Tara turned away from Willow and looked at the slayer. "Don't you mean patr..ey?"

"Ha!" Willow laughed as the slayer blushed. "What? Okay, so I'm not good under verbal pressure," Buffy defended herself, "besides, who are you to talk Will. I don't remember you doing any better?"

Willow stopped laughing. "I..." she pouted. "Well you put me on the spot! It was all you."

"Well, personally I thought it was a pretty p-pathetic attempt on both accounts." Tara piped up.

"Hey!" Buffy and Willow argued.

A grinning Tara just shrugged her shoulders and twirled her stake around a few times. She walked to the door and opened it, then turned and watched the two of them still in the same spot. "You coming?"

Buffy and Willow took Tara to one of Sunnydale's twelve cemeteries. For a relatively small town on the US town scale, there were a whole lot of cemeteries. You would think that this fact would scare potential homebuyers away from the area — if the nasties didn't. But no, people still kept buying houses in Sunnydale. The very low price could of course be the incentive that sealed the deal.

This particular cemetery was a good practice ground — if you could call it that. There weren't any crypts or mausoleums, and it was relatively far away from the downtown area, so vampires usually didn't set up shop here. Newly risen vampires were the only ones around, and Buffy almost always took care of them.

"I checked the paper this morning, and there were two burials here today. One was an old man who died at the hospital, so we can pretty much forget about that one, but the other one was a freshman at UC Sunnydale." Buffy said as she guided Willow and Tara to the fresh grave. "Oh Will?" She stopped and turned, "you remember that guy with the hell hounds?" Willow nodded, "how could I not?"

"Same guy."

"Really?" Willow asked and Buffy nodded.

"How did he die?" Tara asked.

"The usual, neck wounds — a vampire attack." Buffy said as she continued walking.

"No, I mean the old man?" Buffy stopped again. "Um, I don't really know — I stopped reading when I was sure it wasn't vampires."

"Oh, okay." Tara nodded, "that makes sense."

Buffy winced inside. When did she turn into such a cynic? She found herself inwardly cheering whenever she discovered someone's death wasn't nasty related. She never gave a second thought to the deceased.

"I'm sorry Tara, I guess I've seen too much death to give it a second thought. If it isn't nasty related I move on. It's awful." Buffy apologized.

"No, it's okay. I understand Buffy." Tara offered Buffy a smile and Buffy returned it.

"Okay, let's go. I don't want this guy to get away. He was a psycho when he was alive — him as a vampire is a really bad idea."

They trudged on and quickly found the burial plot. "Tucker Wells," Buffy said, "long time no see."

"So, what do you we do now?" Tara asked.

"Well, we wait." Willow answered. "When you see the earth start to move, and a hand push up out of the grave, then we take action." She walked to the headstone and pulled herself up, so she was sitting on it. "But usually we just talk and hang out until then."

Tara took in her surroundings and frowned. "Hang out?" she asked incredulously.

Willow chuckled. "You get used to it after awhile."

"So..." Buffy started. Willow and Tara both looked at her. "Any new hottie possibilities?"

"Um..." Tara blushed, and Willow giggled. "If there was one you'd tell us right? That's the rule. Isn't that right Buffy?"

"Damn straight." Buffy nodded. "Of course, that goes for you too Will. So?"

"Me?" Willow asked and pointed to herself for emphasis. "Um, no?" She knew she was having some sort of feelings for her roommate, but she wouldn't exactly call them possibilities.

"Really? You would tell me if there was someone, right?"

"Of course, you'll be the first to know. Or you know, second. Since obviously I'd be the first to know."

You sure about that Will? Buffy thought, but she let it slide. She was more interested in what Tara was feeling. "What about you Tara?"

The blonde could feel herself blushing again. She never had been very comfortable talking about her feelings - romantic feelings in particular. "I, um...no?"

"No?"

Tara shook her head. "No, I've never r-really felt like, you know, that... um, before. I've haven't even k-kissed anyone, really, before...let alone, um, anything else." She ducked her head down, embarrassed. She wished she had had a 'normal' life, a 'normal' childhood. The only kids she was able to play with when she was younger were Beth and Donnie. Her dad wouldn't allow anyone else in the house, let alone let her go to anyone else's house. And when she grew up her mom had gotten sick — she had been sick for a long time, almost 5 years until she passed away two years ago. And so Tara had spent all her extracurricular time with her mom, and helping around the house, eventually taking over the entire household. She didn't regret it, not for one second, but she had missed her teenage years. Sometimes she still felt like she was 12 years old, but other times she felt like she was 40.

"Oh, don't feel bad about that Tara." Willow jumped off the headstone and walked over to the blonde. "Where's that smile?" she asked, and lifted Tara's chin up. Tara smiled immediately. "There it is," she joked. "I haven't really kissed anyone either. Yeah, okay, there was that fluke thing with Xander. But that's all it was, a fluke." Willow got a mischievous smile, and arched one eyebrow. "Buffy on the other hand... the guys just can't seem to get enough of her."

"Hey! There was only one guy!" Buffy huffed.

Willow cleared her throat then started the list: "Angel, Owen, Angel, Scott, Angel, Parker..."

"You said Angel three times."

"Yeah, well you guys broke up and got back together three times, so it counts."

Buffy pouted, but then her face suddenly lit up. "Ha! You said Parker, I haven't kissed Parker yet."

The expression on Willow's face could be a poster ad for 'Oh, please...'

"Okay, okay..." Buffy admitted. "There was some minor nibbling, but no tongue yet."

"That's still more action that I've gotten lately."

"Um, guys..." Tara whispered, "the earth's moving." She pointed at Tucker's grave. The grass was stirring, and the earth was bulging in the middle, like something was trying to force itself out, which in all fairness, it was.

"Oh, slayer time." Buffy said and grabbed her stake from her pocket. "Stakes ready?"

"Yup," Willow answered and held hers up. Tara fumbled around with her jacket until she found hers, "got it."

"Cool. Will, get next to the headstone, in case he tries to run, me and Tara will stay here to greet the new and not improved Tucker Wells."

"Sure thing, boss." Willow answered and got in place. Buffy motioned Tara to follow her, so they stood in front of the grave. "I'm gonna knock him around a bit, then I'll hold him, you stake okay?"

"Um," Tara hesitated.

"It's gonna be fine, he won't move. I promise."

Tara took a deep breath and nodded, "okay." I can do this.

A hand shot out of the earth, followed by an arm and a shoulder, then a head poked out and the vampire growled.

"Hey there Tucker, remember me?"

Tucker looked up at Buffy and growled some more. "I guess not." She turned to Tara, "it takes a little time for them to get adjusted. First all they can think about his their hunger, and their need to kill. After that, they start to come around."

"Um, need to kill?" That didn't sound like such a good thing.

"Oh don't worry, they're so hungry, they can't think straight. And they're relatively weak for a vampire so..." Buffy trailed off. Tucker was still trying to climb out of his grave; he managed to get his other hand out of the ground and pushed himself up so his whole upper torso was out. He struggled some more but then he stopped moving. "What?" Buffy asked. "Come on, get with the program, I have to see Parker later."

Willow started to say something but Buffy intercepted. "Don't you start!" Willow closed her mouth with a snap.

Tara leaned into Buffy, "Um, you think he's stuck?" she whispered. Buffy looked at Tucker, half out of his grave, struggling to get out every now and then, but each attempt proving fruitless.

"Oh man," she sighed. "Damn you Tucker. Can't you do one thing right? Come on," she pulled Tara with her and made her kneel in front of the vampire. Buffy went behind Tucker and grabbed his arms, holding him in place. Tucker struggled against Buffy who held him firmly in place. "Hold still you idiot. I'm trying to teach my friend here how to stake a vamp." She looked up at Tara. "Okay, now just stake him, right through the heart. Just do it hard, and fast."

Tara nodded nervously. She held up the stake and rammed it into Tucker. "Hey!" Tucker growled, but he didn't turn into dust. He struggled even harder against Buffy who eventually stood up and kicked him hard to the side of his head, knocking him out. "Um, oops?" Tara said and pulled out her stake.

Willow walked over and kneeled next to Tara. "That's okay, I had big problems my first time as well. I just didn't have the hand-eye coordination."

"Right, exactly. I c-can do the thrust, but g-getting it hard enough, and fast enough, and hitting the heart at the same t-time... I think there's a reason why the slayer has those extra a-abilities."

Tara tried again, and the impact woke Tucker up from his unconsciousness. He looked down at the stake sticking out from his chest and then up at Tara. He snarled at her, saliva dripping down his chin. His eyes turned even more yellow and his fangs elongated in front of her. Tara yelped and quickly pulled the stake back out. It was covered in blood. Third time's the charm. She stabbed the stake into Tucker's bloodied chest and the result surprised her. Tucker visibly rotted at breakneck speed in front of her and then exploded in a cloud of dust. Tara sat back on her heels and coughed as the dust settled. "Wow," she whispered. Learning how to kill vampires was one thing. Actually seeing one turn to dust was totally different.

"Hey, you did good." Buffy offered her hand to Tara and pulled her up. Tara arched one eyebrow. "Really," Buffy stated, "staking a vamp from that angle is hard. Even I couldn't do it my first try, and staking vamps is like in my genes."

Tara smiled. "Thanks Buffy."

"Yeah, really. You did great Tara," Willow added to the conversation. "The first time I saw a vamp I screamed and I think I may have fainted a little." Willow frowned, as she tried to remember that night in the crypt with Darla. It didn't matter now. "But you...first you light Harmony on fire, then you stake Tucker. That's a very impressive track record." Willow nodded for emphasis.

"...but Blondie Bear, she ruined my jacket."

Buffy, Willow and Tara all turned around as they heard the familiar whine in Harmony's voice behind them. Through the surrounding trees, and headstones they could see two people approaching them, Harmony and...

"Spike?" Buffy couldn't belief it. What in the hell was he doing back in Sunnydale?

"Slayer." Spike spat out. His number one arch nemesis was right in front of him, looking smug as ever. Oh, how he hated her.

"Didn't I kick you out of Sunnydale already?"

Harmony noticing Tara and Willow shouted in excitement. "Oh, oh, that's her, Spikey. She's the one who ruined my jacket. Go kill her." She pushed Spike forward who tumbled a few steps. "Harmony, sod off!" He complained.

"But Spikey..." she whined.

Buffy laughed out loud. "Spikey? Oh that's rich." Spike glared at Harmony, ready to ring her neck at any moment.

"So what brought you back this time Spike? Dru dump you again?"

"Actually, yeah — but now he's with me." Harmony offered.

"Shut the bloody hell up Harm." Spike shouted and trudged away from the other blonde vampire.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I just came to pick up what's mine and then I'll be leaving."

"What's yours?" Buffy asked, "and what would that be?"

"That's none of your business slayer." Spike walked a little closer and noticed the name of the headstone next to Buffy. "Oh bloody hell," he whispered. Tucker had been his kill, but like always the slayer had to mess it up for him.

"This was your work?" Buffy smirked.

"Yeah, what of it?"

"Nothing...it's dust now."

"I'm really going to kill you one of these days."

"Oh come on Spikey, why would you wanna do that?"

Spike growled and charged at Buffy who sidestepped him easily and elbowed him in the back. Spike turned around and attacked again, and he and Buffy started to trade blows. Harmony, noticing the busy slayer, decided to take her chance and ran towards Tara, vamping out in the process.

"Oh no you don't!" Willow shouted and lunged herself at the approaching vampire, sending herself and Harmony rolling on the ground.

Willow ended up on top and punched Harmony in her face. "That's for biting me you bitch!" She punched her again, once, twice, three times until the vampire with her superhuman strength, managed to toss Willow off her. Tara ran over to the redhead and helped her up.

"What's with the two of you?" Harmony huffed as she got up. "I attack one, the other comes to the rescue. It's very inconvenient."

"It's called friendship Harm," Willow retorted, "look it up." She shook her right hand and clenched and unclenched her fist. It was swollen after her punches, but boy, was it worth it. Tara noticed Willow fussing with her hand and cradled it in her hands. "Does it hurt?"

"Yeah...a little." Willow pouted, but inwardly she was cheering. "Aww..." Tara smiled, "that was very brave what you did back there, and hey, you kicked ass."

"Okay, that's it! I am going to kick your bloody British ass!" Buffy shouted all of a sudden. Willow and Tara snickered at familiar phrase and looked over to Buffy where she was pinning Spike to the ground and throwing blows after blows in his face. Spike had managed to rip her new leather jacket and she was thoroughly pissed off.

"Harm, bloody hell!" Spike grunted. Harm ran over and pushed Buffy of him. "Leave my Spikey alone!"

Spike was quick to get up and grabbed Harmony, and dragged her away, "Come on, Harm. It's not time yet."

"Yeah, we're gonna get that Gem of Amara and you'll be sorry."

"Oh, bloody hell Harm, can't you ever just shut up?"

Spike and Harmony disappeared from sight and Buffy visibly relaxed.

"So...Spike's back." Willow stated.

"You think?"

"Um, what's the Gem of Amara?"

***

"The Gem of Amara is a myth." That's what Giles had said, but when Buffy met Spike in the middle of the day, and watched her stake go through his heart and the wound close right back up, she had to conclude that the myth was a little more real than that. Not that she was surprised; vampires were supposed to be just a myth too, until they started hounding her every night.

Buffy placed the ring on Giles coffee table. "The Gem of Amara." The Scooby gang was sat around the coffee table, each eyeing the precious gem.

"I like it." Willow stated.

"It's very, um, s-small." Tara added.

"It's also very dangerous. And we're destroying it." Giles said. He reached over to grab the ring, but Buffy picked it up before he had the chance. "We don't destroy it."

"But Buffy, any vampire that gets his hand on this is going to be essentially unlikable." Giles looked at Buffy as he stated his case, but noticing the look on Buffy's face, he retreated. "Oh."

"I'm going to LA, tonight." Buffy said. Giles nodded.

Xander moved his eyes back and forth between Buffy and Giles, hoping more information would be disclosed, but after a moment he got restless. "What's going on? What's in LA?"

Willow leaned next to Xander. "She's giving the ring to Angel. Don't make a fuss."

"Buffy, are you sure?" Giles asked, wanting his charge to be absolutely sure of this decision. The Gem of Amara could be an invaluable help to Angel, but should he lose it...

"He should have it."

***

"Any idea when Buffy will be back?" Tara asked from her position in her closet. Willow had said good-bye to Buffy the previous night and was now in the process of unpacking her magic supplies, as was Tara.

"She said she'd probably stay the night, and come back tomorrow." Willow answered. She noticed Tara struggling with two boxes she was carrying. "Oh, hey, need some help with that?" she ran over and grabbed the top box.

"Thanks," Tara giggled, "Wow, I'm having a deja-vu moment."

Willow placed the box on Tara's bed. "Oh, you know what would be really cool? If we could transform this whole room to a really witchy place, you know?" She turned around the room, "you know, like candles, and incense, and herbs and stuff."

"I like that...Oh, I could put up my faerie lights. Give the room a magical glow."

"Faerie lights!" Willow exclaimed and her eyes widened in amazement.

"Well, not real faerie lights — they're just, um, white Christmas lights." Tara grinned.

"Oh," Willow pouted for a moment, she would have liked to have real faerie lights...but Tara's idea was great too. "Yeah, that would be so cool."

***

When every book, candle, herb and incense were in place Willow and Tara settled down on the floor in the middle of the room. Willow's collection of different colored pens was laid out between them.

"Ready?" Tara asked.

"Yup," Willow answered and grabbed hold of Tara's hands.

They closed their eyes and took deep breaths. They centered themselves then called on the magicks. Willow felt the familiar shiver run down her spine whenever she did a spell, but now it was much stronger. Her entire body tingled from the sensation. Wow!

Tara was having a similar reaction to the magick as Willow was. She was used to the tingle, but it had never been as strong, not even when she practiced with her mom, and that had been pretty spectacular in itself. This was something else. And she reveled in it.

Slowly they opened their eyes and Willow gasped at the colorful sight. Her entire collection was floating in front of them, some spinning, some twirling...it was wonderful.

"It worked." Tara whispered.

"Oh my god, look at it Tara. I've never floated anything bigger than a pencil before. Well okay, each pen isn't much bigger than a pencil, but all at the same time...this is so cool...oh, let's make them do stuff."

"What kinda stuff?"

"Hmm," Willow looked around her room, while still maintaining her connection with Tara. "Ohh!" she exclaimed when she noticed her notepad on her nightstand. She concentrated on the pad and soon it lifted of the nightstand and slowly floated towards her. "Yay!" she giggled and Tara followed suit. "Okay, draw something."

"Hmm..." Tara thought. She concentrated on a red pen and the cap popped off in mid air. She floated the pen to where Willow was holding the notepad with her mind. The pen started moving on the pad. "Okay, you're turn." Tara said.

Willow looked at the notepad and laughed out loud when she noticed the starting position of tic-tac-toe on the pad. Tara had already marked one box with a 'x'.

They took turns marking of a box — until the game ended in a draw.

"Okay," Willow said and moved the used paper up and behind the pad. She floated her blue pen to the pad and drew in ten straight lines, one next to the other with a little space between the sixth and the seventh line. She started on the eleventh line but quickly crossed it out — there wasn't enough room on the pad.

Then she drew in a picture Tara soon recognized as the game hangman.

Willow finished and grinned at Tara. "Ask away."

"A?"

"Nope." Willow drew the letter A at the bottom of the pad then drew in a vertical line, representing the noose.

"I?"

Willow huffed and wrote in "I" on top of the second line.

"E?"

Willow filled in the seventh position of the word.

"O?"

"Enough with the vowels, geez..." Willow filled in the tenth position.

"Hmm...Y?"

"Darn it." The Y fitted nicely in the sixth position.

"Hmm..i-y e-o. I don't know, R?"

Willow sighed; this game wasn't really going her way. She filled in the ninth position. The word on the pad now said _ I _ _ _ Y _ E R O.

"Um, T?"

"Jesus Christ!" T was indeed the third letter. Willow looked at the almost blank drawing. She had only gotten to draw in one lousy rope.

"It-y ero? Hmm..." Tara sounded. She frowned, deep in thought then a brilliant smile spread over her face. "Oh, I know!"

"No you don't." Willow argued.

"Witchy Hero."

Willow snorted, "as if." Tara arched an eyebrow and Willow sighed, "Okay, fine...you're right. It's Witchy Hero, woo hoo," the redhead pouted.

"Did you know that you're a very sore loser Willow?" Tara grinned.

"Do you want me to pounce on you again? 'Cause I will." Willow threatened and gave Tara's hands a warning squeeze.

Tara drew back both her hands and held them up. "No, no...no pouncing necessary." As soon as she said the words all the floating items fell back to the floor with a clattering sound. Tara laughed. "My bad."

Willow laughed with her, but she hurried to put the cap back on the red and blue pens. "But seriously, all joking aside Tara," Willow said, "I, um...close your eyes."

"Will this involve pouncing?"

"No, no pouncing, I promise." Willow giggled.

"Okay." Tara acquiesced and closed her eyes.

Willow reached back behind her and grabbed hold of her book bag by the edge of the bed and pulled it to her. She reached in and grabbed an item from the bag.

She placed the item in front of her, and concentrated on it, but it wouldn't budge. "Don't open your eyes Tara," Willow said as she took both of Tara's hands in hers, "but I need your help."

Tara nodded, and squeezed Willow's hands. Again the magick crackled in the air around them and Tara felt their floating something, but she didn't know what it was.

"Okay, you can open your eyes now." Willow whispered.

Tara opened her eyes slowly and giggled joyously at the sight that greeted her. A small blue teddy bear danced merrily in front of her. It had a red cape and the "superman" logo embroidered on its chest.

"I tried finding something of the witchy variety, but no luck." Willow shrugged her shoulders.

Tara released their connection and caught the teddy bear before it fell down. "This is so cute. Thank you." Willow was rewarded with a lopsided smile and she felt the same magical shiver from earlier run down her spine. She sighed. I'm in trouble.

Tinna Karen, I hafta say that you are currently on my top 10 Kitten board writers list right now! Your re-write of season 4 is very believeable, and you actually manage to fully integrate Tara into the action, rather than just adding her inbetween lines from the series.

Also, I'm really liking how you're characterizing Buffy: I'm actually starting to like her again! The last time that happened was back when I was in junior high school

But I don't know what Tara's thoughts about Willow are! You sneaky little minx, you're gonna make us wait to learn what she's feeling, aren't you? Oh well, I don't mind ( Much ). That just means more update-y goodness!

And I gotta say that I *LOVE* the fact that you're taking things slow between Tara and Willow. Thank you so much sweetie! Let's hear it for long, descriptive and well-written updates!

HIP HIP, HOORAY! HIP HIP, HOORAY!

Anyhoo, take care and write fast!

TexanZeppo256: I'm all with the blushing now :) Thanks Ryan. And yeah, I'm being a sneaky kitten - keeping Tara all mysterious and stuff - I've always seen her as a mysterious kinda girl, you know? And you think Buffy is likable again? Yay, go me! :)
