Playing House Part 1

By Cherry Avenger

Feedback - always welcomed

The sun filtering in from the bay window of the Rosenbergs' living room warmed wood surface of Sheila's mahogany desk as she sat finishing some paperwork. A gray SUV slowing and stopping in front of her house caught her attention, and her lips curled up ina small grin. She watched a blonde woman her age let a small girl out of the front seat. The little bundle of energy started to race up to the porch, but her mother called her back. She handed the girl a petite pink suitcase with a design Sheila couldn't quite make out at that distance. Hand in hand the girl and her mother walked slowly up the path, though it was obvious the girl wanted to hurry.

As the doorbell rang, Sheila listened as fast-paced pitter-patter of feet came clambering down the stairs to the entry hall. Sheila watched her red haired daughter come to a screeching halt at the door. The girl looked like she was about to open the door, but then remembered she was not allowed to. Green eyes looked over at her mother. "Mommy, the doorbell rang," she announced as she pointed at the door.

"It did, Willow dear?" she pretended as she kept her eyes on her paperwork. "I didn't hear it."

"It did, Mommy. It did." Willow jumped up and down in excitement.

"Maybe you were hearing things, dear." Sheila was having trouble hiding her grin.

Willow put her hands on her tiny hips and tapped her foot impatiently. "But Mommy..." The doorbell rang again. Willow pointed in triumph. "See, Mommy. It did ring. It did." She started jumping again and clapped her hands together.

Sheila went to the door and ruffled Willow's long hair. "Aren't you just the smart one?" she said affectionately. She opened the door the pair of blondes. "Jennifer, Tara, please come in." She held the door as they walked in. After shutting the door, Sheila watched as Willow nearly mauled her friend with a hug. "Willow, why don't you and Tara put her bag in your room, and then come right back down, okay?"

Willow grabbed Tara's hand as they raced up the stairs with Tara's Carebear suitcase banging each step.

Jennifer Maclay chuckled as she watched the two girls disappear. "Thanks so much for having her for the weekend. Donald and I needed the break."

"It's a pleasure. Tara is such a delight, and Willow just adores her. Where's Donnie, though? He could have stayed here, too."

"He's at the Osbourne's house. Despite Donnie breaking his toy guitar, him and little Daniel are getting along again." Jennifer sighed.

"That's good," Sheila said as the girls came back down.

"Mama's gonna go now, Tara" Jennifer kneeled down and opened her arms to hug her daughter. Tara kissed her lightly on the cheek. "Be a good girl for Mrs. Rosenberg, okay?" Tara nodded vigorously. Jennifer stood and went to the door. "Sheila, if you and Ira ever need a break, let me know," she offered as she waved goodbye.

After the door closed, Sheila turned to the girls. "Well, I figured you two could go play in Willow's room while i get started on dinner. I'm thinking fish sticks and french fries. Whatcha think?" Both agreed instanteously. "Then, maybe afterwards, we could watch a movie with either popcorn or sundaes." The girls' grins got wider as they nodded some more. Sheila laughed. "Go and play. I'll call you when it's ready." The girls took off without a backward glance.

The Rosenbergs had a big four bedroom house. Willow, being an only child, had been granted 2 of the rooms. One was her bedroom and the other, her playroom. Her father had built a mini replica of a kitchen in the corner. There was a small table and chairs near it, and a tiny 2 kid couch that faced 5 inch TV/VCR combo. Various other toys littered the remaining floor space. "Wanna play house?" Willow asked Tara as they reached the room.

Tara smiled lop-sidedly. "Who's gonna be the mommy?"

"You'd make a good mommy." Willow handed her a baby doll dressed in light blue coveralls.

Tara cradled the doll close. "Who you gonna be?"

Willow grabbed her red, yellow, and blue stethescope. "I'll be the daddy and bring home lotsa money." She grabbed an old white button up shirt of her father's from the corner of the room and put it on as her lab coat.

Each went about setting themselves up. Willow lined up her many stuffed animals and started examining them. Tara grabbed a plastic stoller and placed the baby in it. "Willow, what's our baby's name?" Tara asked as she began to make a pretend dinner.

Willow paused for a moment. Her eyebrows scrunched up as she thought. "How about She-ra?"

"That's not a real name," Tara countered as she grabbed one of the plastic pans.

Willow looked even more perplexed. "Jem? We could name her Rainbow Brite?" Tara shook her head at the choices. "What's your favorite name?"

        Tara grinned. "Willow."

"What?" she asked as she placed the stethescope over a teddy bear's heart.

        "Willow."

"What?" The red haired girl looked at her friend.

"Silly. My favorite name is Willow."

"Oh, okay. But we can't call her Willow. I wouldn't know if you are talkin' to me or the baby. It would be confusing. Another name is better. Yeah, another name." Willow nodded to herself.

"How about Rose? My granny's name Rose," Tara suggested. She pretended the baby had started crying and went to pick her up and rock her.

Willow smiled as she looked at her friend. "Rose Rosenberg."

Tara giggled. "It sounds silly. I like it."

Willow came over to them. She poked the baby doll lightly in the belly. "Hi Little Rose." The girls giggled some more before starting their game again.

After dinner, Sheila and Ira sat down and watched The Chipmunk Adventure with Willow and Tara. The girls shared a big chocolate sundae and sang along with the various songs in the movie. Now they laid all tucked-in in Willow's bed. Tara gazed at the glowy stars all over the ceiling. The only other source of light in the room was Willow's Smurfs night-light by the door. "Today was fun, Willow," Tara said a little drowsy.

"Tomorrow should be funner. I heard Daddy say to Mommy that he was gonna take us to the park to feed the ducks." Willow yawned. She turned on her side towards Tara.

Tara turned to face Willow. "Cool." Tara closed her eyes. "I love ya, Willow."

Willow mumbled back. "I love ya, too, Tara" The girls fell asleep with their heads nestled against one another.

Playing House update

Postby Cherry Avenger » Wed Mar 24, 2004 3:00 pm

disclaimers the same as in first post

Part 2

Willow and Tara are hanging out in the big playhouse Willow's father had erected for them when they had gotten big enough to play outside in the backyard by themselves. Tara sat with her composition notebook in her lap as she leaned back against the wooden wall. "Do you think junior high is gonna be that different, Will?" She looked up from her poem to see the redhead staring intently at the screen of a very old laptop of her father's.

"Oh man," Willow sighed when her turtle program didn't produce the right shapes and colors. "Except for the switching classes and having multiple teachers teach us, it should be the same. Same old people we know and the same old subjects to learn."

Tara set aside her writing. "True, but it's supposed to be the next big step. We're supposed to start growing up. Act more mature. You know?"

Willow turned to fully face the blonde. "Personally, I think we are pretty mature already. Epecially compared to some of the other kids our age. We are still kids. Dad says we better enjoy it while it lasts." Willow's face lit up as an idea sprang to her head. "And as an homage to us being kids, we should do something we haven't done since we were little."

Tara's eyebrow shot up in the air skeptically, but she did grin. "And that would be?"

"Let's play house," Willow said simply. Tara started laughing. Willow joined in, but after a few moments, she asked, "So wanna play house?"

"Sure," Tara agreed. Willow grabbed an old teddy bear from the corner of the house. Tara shook her head at her friend. "You come up with some quirky notions, Will."

Willow just smiled in response. She handed the bear to Tara. "Here's baby Rose, Mommy." Tara cradle the bear as though it was a real baby.

"And where is Daddy going off to work now?" Tara asked remembering all the different occupations Willow had gone through. "Vet, accountant, doctor, or scientist?"

"Computer programmer," Willow answered pointing to the laptop.

"Gonna make the big bucks by having the turtle make a star shape and turn the screen rainbow colors? Cool," Tara held the baby as Willow went off to work. She started singing very quietly to the baby so she could put her to sleep.

Willow found herself concentrating on hearing Tara's singing than her program. After a few minutes, the song was over and the baby was deemed asleep. Willow stood abruptly and walked over to Tara. "Honey, I'm home," she called out loudly.

"Shush," Tara placed a finger over her own lips. "You'll wake the baby."

Willow repeated in a low voice, "Honey, I'm home." She leant in to kiss Tara on the cheek.

Tara backed up a step. "Will, what are you doing?"

Willow wasn't even sure of the answer as she fished for a response. "Mommies and Daddies kiss when they come home," she blurted out.

"We never played like that when we kids," Tara countered. Her stomach fluttered strangely at the thought of Willow kissing her.

"Well, to a five year old, kissing was gross," Willow stated logically. "We're in junior high now. It shouldn't be gross anymore." Neither Willow nor Tara had ever brought up the subject before. The thought never even crossed Tara's mind. "We should play the game more realistically, shouldn't we?"

"Kiss hello like mommies and daddies do." Tara hesitated a moment longer. "Okay..."

Willow leans in and kisses Tara softly on the cheek. To avoid any tension, Willow quickly leaned over and kissed the teddy bear on the nose. "How are my two favorite girls," she asks to the baby. When Willow looks back at Tara, the blonde has a wondering look in her eyes. She shakes herself out of it and picks up Rose. She and Willow sit down to a pretend dinner.

A very short time later, Sheila leans out of the kitchen window and yells out to the girls, "Tara, your mother called and says it's time to come home." Tara gathers her things quickly as Willow shuts down the laptop. Willow walks Tara out through the side gate to the frontyard. Tara's bike sits on the front porch.

The blonde finishes putting last of her things in backpack. She grabs her bike and straddles the seat. Willow leans into give her a hug. Tara loosens the hug but doesn't let go of Willow yet. "Will... Moms and Dads kiss goodbye, too, right?"

Willow felt her chest inexplicably tighten. "Yeah," she answered in a slightly higher and normal voice.

Tara nods as if making a decision. She quickly but firmly pecks Willow on the lips. "Bye," she says as she rushes off on her bike.

Willow watches her ride down the street. Her eyes follow until Tara's turns at the corner. "Bye," Willow whispers as her fingers touch her lips. Not quite understanding what she is feeling, but knowing it's a good thing, Willow walks into her house.

Update 3/26

Here y'all go. Enjoy

Part 3

Hands covered Tara's sapphire eyes. "Guess who," an all too familiar said.

Tara sounded shocked. "Pablo!. That weekend in Mexico was supposed to be a one time thing!" She started giggling.

        "Uh-huh, wanna guess again?"

Tara brought her hand to the side of her face in the classic thinking pose. "Well, if it's not Pablo, and I know it's not Count Viktor, it has to be the brilliant best friend of mine, Willow!" Hands pulled away, and Tara turned to find her red haired friend along with 2 others. The boy was fairly tall compared to them. He had shaggy dark hair and a skateboard in one hand. The girl was blonde and impeccably stylish.

"Tara, this is Buffy and Xander Summers," Willow said breaking her out of her comtemplation of the two strangers. "They're in my english class, and Mr. Giles wanted me to show them around."

Tara smiled. "Nice to meet you both." Tara cocked her head to the side for a second. "You're brother and sister, right? And both juniors?" she asked a little perplexed

"We're twins," Buffy answered. "Fraternal twins."

"We'd look more alike if Buffy would stop dying her hair," Xander explained further. He leaned in conspiratorially and couldn't help but add, "I swear one of these days her hair is gonna fall out."

Buffy slapped him hard in the stomach. As he rubbed the pain away gently, the small group began walking down the hall. "He just has issues whenever I do something different. Twin anxiety, or something," Buffy said. "So what's the scene in Sunnydale?"

"Scene?" Willow asks, then realizes, "Oh the happenin' spots...um...well there's really only the Bronze. It's a danceclub, and everyone goes. Tara and I have only been a couple of times since she got her license."

"We so should go," Buffy practically begs. "I so need to blow off some steam. Xan's motorboy. Wanna go tonight?"

Tara smiles awkwardly as Willow turns to her. Willow nods her head to the blonde. "Okay. We'll meet you guys there at...8?"

Buffy seems to explode with enthusiam. "8 is good. Give Xander the details, and we'll be there."

The small group entered the Bronze. Buffy grabbed her slightly younger sister's, Dawn, hand and immediately headed for the dancefloor. Willow and Tara secured a table while Xander went to grab drinks for everyone. After a semi long line, Xander set down 5 sodas and scooted next to Tara in the booth. Seeing refreshment, Dawn dragged Buffy back to the group and sat next to Willow.

It was kind of a snuggly situation with five people. In an effort to be comfortable Willow moved her arm to rest on Tara's shoulders. Tara smiled sweetly at the redhead and leaned a little into her. After Buffy had downed over half of her drink, she asked, "Who's up for more dancing?"

Everyone scooted out of the booth except for Willow. Tara frowned. "I'll keep watch over the table. You all go ahead," Willow encouraged. Without further ado, the Summers clan went to 'shake their groove thangs'.

Tara stayed back a moment, gazing at the redhead. She reached to grab the other girl's hands. She tugged lightly wanting to drag the girl out with her. "Come on, Will. Please?" Tara attempted to use the puppy dog eyes on her friend.

"Tara, you know me dancing equals spaz." Her embarassment won over her desire to grant the blonde's wish. "I know how much you love dancing. Go ahead. I'll be fine" She regretfully loosened her fingers from Tara's grasp. Tara shrugged and turned to their other friends with a sad smile.

Willow watched her go, a myriad of emotions racing through her body. She sipped on her soda as she watched her friends, old and new, laughing and dancing. For the next hour or so various member of the small group floated back to the table to converse with the redhead only to be drawn back to the dancefloor. Whenever Tara came back, she would sit close to Willow and lean her head in intimately to talk with her, and each time she left, she would take the redhead's hand and ask "Come dance with me" and let go only when Willow shook her head shyly.

Buffy headed for the table and passed Tara on the way. She noticed the slightly sad look on the blonde's face. Her eyes then fell upon the wistful expression on Willow's face. She sat at the table grabbed her brother's semi-full glass of coke. She gulped it down and started to chomp down on some of the ice. Willow barely acknowledged her arrival with a nod, all her attention focused on the dancing blonde.

Buffy watched Tara get lost in the music. She had been able to tell early on that Tara loved dancing. She easily got swept away in it. Xander started dancing closer and closer to Tara eventually gaining enough nerve to wrap an arm loosely around as they swayed to the beat. Tara glanced briefly at the taller boy, smiled, but gave no sign of moving closer. Buffy could see the sparkle of hope in her brother's eyes.

She turned to gauge Willow's reaction, and was almost frightened by the jealousy radiating from her. Her green eyes looked like they were trying to bore a hole in Xander's head. "Willow, you okay?" she asked trying to draw the redhead's attention from the dancefloor.

Willow tried to shake off the slightly sick feeling rolling around in her stomach. She pulled her eyes away from the 'cozy couple'. "Yeah, I'm fine." She forced her eyes to stare intently on the drop of condensation slowly sliding down her glass.

Buffy looked over at Tara and Xander again. "I think my brother likes Tara. Think she'd be interested?"

Willow glanced at Buffy and the others before bringing her eyes back to her glass. She took a sip to water down her inexplicably dry throat. "I'm not sure. I don't really know what type of guy Tara would be interested in," she answered quietly.

"Really? I thought you two have been friends for years upon years," Buffy was astonished. "You've never talked about crushes?"

"It's never really been brought up before."

"You've never needed to talk about how cute you think somebody is? Or whether so and so might like you or her?"

Willow shrugged a little uncomfortable at the topic of conversation. "It's always just been Tara and me. Off in our own little world. There's never been anyone who has caught my eye."

"Because Tara is all you see," Buffy smiled. "You've got it bad, Will." Tired of ice, Buffy grabbed what was left of Dawn's drink.

Willow turned her gaze on the blonde. "What are you talking about, Buffy?" in a freaked out voice.

"Don't take this the wrong way, and let me know if I'm totally wrong, but I've seen how you two interact. I can also tell you want to break my brother's arm for touching her." Buffy smiled to help alleviate some of Willow's apprehension.

"We're not like that..." Willow started to say.

Buffy interrupted. "I think you care deeply about her, maybe even love her. And it's obvious from the way she looks at you that she feels the way"

"What? Do you have some kind of lesbadar?" Willow said a little defensively. She wasn't used to anyone, but Tara, reading her so well.

"Well there is a better word for it, but yeah, I do get the vibe from you both." Buffy smirked.

"They just look cuddly over there, and I want her to be happy no matter what."

"Willow, if you don't do something about it soon, you may well lose her to Xander or some other girl. All you can do is try and see."

The song ended and a slow one started. Willow watched Xander hold out his hands asking Tara to dance with him. Tara smiled, but shook her head and walked off the dance floor. She kept her head down as she walked, and when she finally looked up she froze in her tracks. Willow had gotten up and was walking towards her, the infamous 'resolve face' in place.

"You okay?" Tara asked as Willow stopped very close in front of her. Willow grinned and took Tara's hand leading her back to the dance floor. Still unsure of what was going on, "Will?"

Willow stopped near the center of the floor. She placed a finger on the blonde's lips silencing any more questions. Then she held out her arms. "Dance with me?" Tara's blue eyes widened. Rendered speechless, she could only nod and move into the other girl's arms. They embraced gently with Tara's arms around Willow's waist and Willow's arms around the Tara's neck. "Are you okay?" Willow checked.

Tara gazed deeply into Willow's eyes looking for an answer. Willow let all the love she had for her dear friend shine in her own emerald orbs. Finding what she needed, Tara leaned in to rest her forehead against the redhead's. "I'm so much better than okay."

Xander had made his way back to the table after checking on Dawn who had run into a few people she had met from school. He sat across from her twin and turned to see what she was staring at. He saw Tara's arms wrapped around Willow as they danced closely together. "There that went flying out the window, didn't it?" he asked Buffy.

"Sorry, Xander. You really had no chance." Buffy kept her eyes on the new couple.

Xander shrugged. He gazed at the dancing girls for a few minutes. Eventually he turned back to his sister to find tears threatening to fall. "You miss Faith, dont you?"

Buffy wiped at her eyes before the tears could find their way out. "Yeah, why do you ask?"

        "'Cause you're playing matchmaker..."

Buffy interrupted, "Not really. I just said the right thing at the right time. A slight nudge really. They were a match already made."

"I know you, Buffy. You only do that to avoid thinking about your own lovelife, or lack of one."

"Just 'cause we're twins doesn't mean you know me that well."

"Yeah, it does." Xander smirked. "There's only one other person in the world who might know you just a little better than me, and she is 2 hundred miles away."

Buffy looked down at the empty glass in her hands. "I talked to her on the phone after school. She says that we just need to get through the next year and a half. Then we can be together at the same college." She looked back at her brother. "Do you think we'll last that long?"

Xander thought a moment, then answered. "The important question is do you think you will last that long? I think that if you both believe it and work for it, you'll be together forever." Buffy scooted over to him and they hugged tightly. When they released each other, their eyes went back to the blossoming couple.

"Tara, I need to tell you some stuff," Willow began, but was silenced by Tara lightly kissing her on the lips. It was a quick kiss, but it filled both Willow and Tara with happiness.

"Will, we have the rest of our lives to talk. I just wanna be dancing with you right now." Tara said as she laid her head on Willow's shoulder and embraced her tightly. Willow welcomed the new closeness and closed her eyes to revel in it. They each smiled contently as they continued to dance.

Part 4a

As graduation caps came back down to earth, Willow ran towards her girlfriend. Tara held her arms open and Willow jumped into them. Tara spun a few times with Willow laughing gleefully. Coming to a stop, Tara captured Willow's lips in a passionate lock. The flashing of lights soon broke them away from their world as they turned their heads to find Willow's father and Tara's mother with the offending cameras in hand. Tara's dad and Willow's mother just laughed and clapped. Rounds of "Congratulations" started as hugs were equally distributed among the 2 families. More pictures followed as each girl posed with her parents, then posed together with each family.

All of a sudden Willow felt someone jump onto her and nearly toppled over. "God, Will, we were sitting right next to you. You couldn't wait?" Buffy mock glared at the girl before her excitement bubbled right back to the surface. Xander walked up, too bringing along his mother and younger sister.

"You never ran that fast in gym class," Xander quipped. "Group hug." He held out his arms. The quartet all embraced each other tightly and cried out their jubilation in time with the camera flashes from various parents. They then posed for several nice group shots. Everyone began talking about celebration plans at once.

No one noticed Dawn sneak off only to join them after a moment. She grabbed Buffy's hands to gain her attention. "Calm down a sec. I got a surprise for you. It's actually from someone else, but I did help out a little," Dawn explained to her elder sister.

"What are you talking about, Dawn?" Buffy asked a bit confused at the brunette's words.

Dawn didn't get a chance to answer as a new voice spoke up. "She's talking about me, B." Buffy spun around and her mouth dropped. For the first time in her life, Buffy had been rendered speechless as she stared at the unexpected arrival, Faith. "I know you were gonna come to LA this weekend, but I couldn't wait that long." Within the blink of an eye, Buffy had her arms around Faith and was kissing her like there was no tomorrow. At the slight cough from Joyce, and giggles from everyone else, Buffy broke the kiss but not the embrace. "I need to surprise you more often," Faith joked. Everyone picked up a cap from the ground before they started walking towards the parking lot. Buffy placed hers atop Faith's head and they shared a smile.

Ira Rosenberg tapped his fork on his empty plate to gether everyone attention. "Well, kids, actually i can't really call you kids anymore, can I?" he began as he lifted a glass of punch in the air. "Buffy, Xander, Tara, and my beautiful daughter, Willow. You have all grown into responsible and intelligent young adults. Graduation is not only an end, but a beginning. A new chapter in your lives for which, I as well as the rest of the parents here, believe you are ready to face head on. Our love and congratulations."

"Our love and congratulations," the rest of the parents chimed in. Everyone took a drink from their punch.

Donald Maclay stepped forward, coughing a little to cover his discomfort at talking in front of people. "Well, we all combined our efforts," he gestured at the grown-ups, "and have gotten a joint present for all of you." He then tossed a simple Class of '99 keyring with a single key on it to Willow, Xander, and Buffy and handed Tara her key with a hug.

The quartet looked extremely confused. Tara spoke up first. "What's this to, Daddy?" she held up the keyring.

"We rented you all a beach house for the week starting on Sunday. That's the house key."

"OH MY GOD!" "WOOHOO!" "I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!" "THIS IS SO AWESOME!" The group jumped out of their seats and started jumping up and down celebrating. Buffy grabbed Faith to join in their good fortune. Hugs were once again exchanged all around with a chorus of "THANK YOU!!"

Willow put her arm around Tara's shoulders and kissed her on the cheek. "Beach, here we come," she yelled and was joined by whoops of joy.

Very cute, but I can't help to think we are missing out on some good events!!

I mean the story is great. Its just big gaps in time and we're missing all the yummy W/T stuff . Maybe you can go back? Or give us some soon?
