New Fic.....The Taming of Willow Fear.

Spoilers....none.

Rating....PG-13, but as with most of my fics it will grow as the relationship does.

Copyright Disclaimer-All the characters belong to Joss and ME...I just like to borrow them and put them into better situations.

Author's Note- I have been wanting to write this one for a while. It is an easy going little fic set after high school. Willow is at UC Sunnydale and Tara runs a farm and stables. Willow wants to learn to ride...well kind of...Guess who is going to teach her.

*************************************************

"The Taming of Willow Fear"- Chapter 1.

"You don't have to do this Wil." Xander repeated turning up the long drive towards the farm and stables.

"Yes Xander, I do."

"But, but they're horses Wil, you know, horses...big ponies with even bigger teeth. Don't you remember?"

"Of course I remember, stop talking about it okay."

"I just don't understand. If you are so afraid of horses why are you doing this, don't you get enough spooks and scares day to day just living the scooby life?"

"That's just it." Willow answered turning to face Xander as he stopped the car. "I do get scared every day and I am able to work my way through it. I can fight demons and vampires, death and destruction. I can even face the end of the world...more then once. But I can't ride a horse?"

"You could try frogs Willow, they're smaller."

"Ewwww," Willow shuddered. "Never. Stop it, you are not helping with this at all. Horses, gonna do horses, just horses, non slimy, non amphibious horses. I think I can do horses, yeah horses, just need a good instructor, right...horses."

Xander listened to Willow continue her mantra as she got out of the car. "Okay Wil, if you say so....back in two?"

Willow took a breath and nodded her head forcefully resolving herself to do this. "Two should do it. I think the lesson should only take an hour but the owner said that I could stay around and familiarize myself with the place if I wanted."

"Or recovering." Xander mumbled under his breath giving Willow a last smile and putting the car in drive. "Better be a good teacher." He said quietly behind his teeth giving willow a final wave.

Willow watched the cloud of dust dissipate as Xander disappeared back down the road. She planted her feet firmly and suppressed the urge to chase after him. "I am going to do this" she said to the cloud, "I am."

Willow took another deep breath and began to scan her surroundings. There was a big house with a garden, a big barn and stable, a big big riding ring. There were pastures as far as the eye can see. Willow smiled, 'this is pretty' she thought, 'it's not so bad'.

Willow did not see any horses, she did however see a woman working quietly by the riding ring. Tall, long hair, with blue jeans, boots and a barn jacket, the woman was working the cinches on a saddle hanging on the fence.

Willow drew closer, she wasn't sure if the woman knew she was there. "Excuse me."

"Ill be with you in a moment."

"I'm looking for T. McClay."

The woman gave a final tug at a piece of leather and turned with a smile to face Willow. "I'm T. McClay or Tara, you must be Willow."

Willow took a step forward to accept the outstretched hand. Her palm met the leather of Tara's calfskin glove, it was soft.

"Oh, I'm sorry" said Tara looking down and pulling off the glove. "Sometimes being around animals all day makes you forget your manners."

Willow took the hand again this time skin to skin. She was amazed to find it softer.

"Willow Rosenberg, I am here to learn how to um...ride."

"I know, I'm the one that talked to you on the phone. I own this place, inherited it after my grandparents died."

"Oh, I'm sorry."

"Don't be, it was a long time ago and they lived long happy lives here. I just continue on."

Willow liked this Tara's face, the way she smiled, the quiet tenor of her voice.

"Willow....that is an interesting name, reminds me of the song by Joan Armatrading."

"Joan who?"

"Joan Armatrading" Tara repeated pausing a moment. "Sorry, I just thought you might know her...or maybe the song, its a lovely song."

"I like music, songs. I do a lot. But I can't sing, no sir, not a note. I used to play the piano though and I always wanted to play the flute. I always thought it would be fun to go to band camp." 'Dear god I'm babbling' thought Willow. 'Why am I babbling?'

Tara just smiled patiently looking clearly amused. 'I like this woman' she thought, 'I like her a lot.'

There was a moment of silence between them as they just stood and looked at each other mutely.

"Well I should show you the horses then, that is why you came, right?"

"Oh yes, right, right, right behind you here, right behind you to the horses, gonna go see the horses with their manes and tails and big teeth." Willow could not make herself stop talking.

'She's cute' thought Tara, 'in a peculiar sort of way.' "I thought we would start with Alice, she is older and very docile. If she were a person...I would classify her as bookish."

"Bookish?"

"Yes, bookish, horses have personalities like people. Alice is quiet and studious. She watches and is very patient and smart. She is a good choice for new riders unlike her stallmate Gertrude. Gertrude is a little more headstrong. God forbid if you try to keep her from Alice...once she almost kicked down a stall door just to get to her. They like to be together."

Willow saw Alice as they turned the corner by the stable. She was at the far end of the ring and lifted her head as she heard Tara's voice.

Willow followed Tara hesitantly as Tara went to the fence and clicked her tongue against her teeth. She reached out her hand to Alice holding baby carrots from inside her pocket.

Willow suddenly realized that the saddle on the fence was for her. That realization coupled with the big horse trotting towards them made her step back....quickly.

Tara heard the "aggh" and turned only in time to see Willow land in the dirt, butt first creating a cloud of dust around her.

Willow sat on her ass feeling like one. She hardly heard Tara ask if she was okay through her embarrassed astonishment. "This is not going as planned." Willow mumbled brushing off her hands.

"Nothing ever does" came Tara's soft voice as she crouched down to look at Willow's face. "So how long have you been afraid of horses?"

Willow looked up into the most gentle eyes she had ever seen. She felt as though she could tell this woman anything. "Since forever, I had a pony think that my arm was a big carrot at a birthday party when I was little."

"Well," Tara said smiling sweetly still looking into Willow's eyes. "Horses are not ponies....and you are not a carrot."

"Some might disagree with you there." Willow answered blowing a wisp of red hair out of her face.

Tara laughed, "Come on, we don't want you to take root there." She said standing and reaching for Willow's hand pulling her to her feet.

Willow now upright began to teeter backward. Tara caught her quickly and held her tightly with both hands. She felt her voice leave as she was again met with the beautiful emerald eyes before her.

"I think I broke my heel" said Willow reluctant to break the spell.

"Your heel, like Achilles?"

"No my heel on my boot, it must have caught and snapped when I fell."

Tara looked down at Willow's feet and then back up to her face again still holding fast to Willow to steady her. "Well, we will just have to get you some new footwear then." She smiled. "Let's go to the house and I will make you some tea."

"Great" Willow answered filled with relief. Even with the ass falling and the horse scaring and the really embarrassing cloud of dust she could see that there were some advantages to her trials. She looked in Tara's eyes, 'yup, some real advantages.'

Chapter 2 coming next....hope you like it.

Willow went to horse-riding school in heels ?? :D

Very brave of her to try and overcome her fear. I don't see why she wants to really, there aren't THAT many horses in Sunnydale after all. I can see her point about fighting demons so she feels stupid being afraid of horsies, still direct confrontation like this is well.... not a guaranteed way to success :)

Having a good teacher helps of course, heh.

The Taming of Willow Fear.....Chapter 2.

"Mmmmm, this is good, what is it?"

"A special blend I grow in my garden."

"A blend of what?"

"Mostly herbs and flowers."

"And you make it yourself?"

"Don't worry," Tara chuckled, "it's medicinal not poisonous."

"It's very soothing."

"That's the idea" said Tara turning to smile at the red head at her kitchen table.

"Okay healing woman...what else do you grow in that garden?"

Tara smiled again and turned back to straining her own tea. "You know," she said now changing the subject "that while your boots are really quite fetching and I am sure quite stylish around Sunnydale proper....they are not very practical here. You need something with a lower wider heel."

'She thinks my boots are fetching' thought Willow pleased with herself. 'She noticed my boots.'

"Of course I noticed your boots, they are what caused you to fall."

'Did I think that or did I say that' Willow thought watching Tara approach the table.

"Boots are important," Tara continued not noticing Willow's puzzlement, "boots and one other basic principal of riding."

"What's that?" asked Willow.

"In order to get on a horse...you need to be able to get near one."

Willow couldn't help but laugh. "Well, I can certainly see the logic in that." She looked down at the large green Wellies on her feet smacking them together under the table. They made a loud thwapping noise that she enjoyed.

'She is so silly' thought Tara, 'even when unsure, she seems to have a sense of humor.' "I don't think we need to worry about riding boots just yet. Lets just see if we can get you used to being around horses."

"Okay" said Willow hesitantly.

"We can go meet the horses after we finish our tea."

"Today? You want me to meet them today?"

"Yes Willow...today." Tara said firmly, placing her cup down. "If you don't do it today, you will come back even more afraid...that is if you come back at all."

Willow shifted uneasily under Tara's steady knowing gaze. She knew Tara was right, she was just...."I'm sure I can do better next time, can't we wait til next time?"

Tara softened her tone and her voice. "I'll be with you, you don't have to go near them, we will just walk through the stable and I will tell you their names."

"We can't do that next week?"

"No Willow, we need to do it today."

"Today?" Willow squeaked.

"Today." Tara purred.

Willow sighed, surrendering "okay, today."

"Think about how good you will feel, we won't even stop, we will just walk right through and I will point them all out."

Willow took a big gulp of tea hoping it would soothe her. Her heart was pounding again and she was somewhere between wanting to run and wanting to stay.

"We will finish our tea and then go, okay?"

"Okay" said Willow in a small voice. Then thinking a moment she asked "what if I can guess their names, do I still have to go?"

"Yes Willow" answered Tara patiently. 'This is going to be difficult' she thought.

"Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen?"

Tara laughed and shook her head.

"Dopey, Sneezy, Bashful and Doc?"

Tara shook her head and smiled sweetly at Willow's attempts at humor. She rose and extended her right hand to Willow. "Come on, it will only take a minute."

Willow took the hand shyly and was immediately warmed by the touch. Tara's presence was centering. Willow felt calmed just by the contact.

Tara lead Willow through the kitchen towards the side door. Willow listened to the thwap, thwap, squeak of her Wellies on the tile. "They are like clown shoes" she giggled following Tara.

'You're adorable' thought Tara still holding Willow's hand and leading her quietly out of the house and towards the stable. Pausing at the entrance she turned to Willow."You ready?"

Willow shook her head no while saying "Yup." She put on her best resolve face and asked "They are staying in their stalls, right?"

"Yup" Tara answered back.

"Even Gertrude?"

Tara was suddenly sorry for telling the Alice and Gertrude story. "Even Gertrude" she said reassuringly.

Willow squeezed Tara's hand and Tara really liked the feeling. 'Careful McClay, remember that she is your student.' "Ready?"

Willow nodded.

"Okay, this is Vita and next to her is Violet. Gertrude is over there and on the other side is Freida and Virginia. Down on the end are Collette, Anais and Eleanor."

Willow held tight to Tara's hand and wrapped herself around her arm as they were about midway through their journey. She just listened, looked and tried to breathe. Once through she took a deep breath and smiled.

Tara stopped and turned to face Willow once she had her safely outside. "Better now?"

Willow nodded still clutching Tara's arm, she did not want to let go. "Better."

"You did great Willow, really, you did great. Maybe next time we can stop and look."

"Or just walk through again?"

"Or just walk through again" echoed Tara.

They stood quietly a moment with Willow still attached to Tara. "They are all girls" Willow suddenly stated with surprise.

"Yes, all girls."

"Wow, an all girl farm...that's kind of cool."

"I like to think so" said Tara feeling a sudden twinge of discomfort.

"I like that" said Willow.

"Me too" said Tara wondering if Willow had any clue what they were talking about.

Willow finally released Tara and stepped back suddenly looking serious. Tara held her breath for a moment worried that Willow might have figured it out.

"Thank you Tara...I mean it, thank you."

"So are you coming back?" Tara asked quietly.

Willow could not imagine not coming back. She could really do without the the horses but this Tara, she would come just to see her again. "Yes, I will be back."

"Good" said Tara relaxing, happy that Willow had not screamed and run away, "good."

*************************************************

Hmmmm...what next? Guess we will have to wait and see.

Be back with 3 in a bit. Hope you like it.

This is a really good start to to the story. I like the idea of Willow trying to face her horse fear, and Tara knowing how to guide her through it.

Heh, I guess the initial bravery faded after falling in the mud :)

Given Willow's reaction to just walking past the horses in the stable... her reaction to an approaching horse would be... not pleasant :) . Slower steps like these are better, gives a good excuse to spend time with Tara too :-)

Well all, I thank you for your feedback. I am having fun with this...it is serious...but not, I love relationship development...it is my favorite part of writing these 2, could just do it over and over and over again.

Domaris- Hi, I am glad you like the beginning. If you are familiar at all with any of my other tales you should be assured that I will have them...um...riding...um one way or another in no time.:blush

Drumbly- You know, Spring is here and I am feeling kind of silly. I am not usually one who goes for the slapstick, I really do not like having poor Wil fall like that...it just kind of fit with the circumstance. It was supposed to be funny and kind of sad at the same time. She is afraid, that is why she is there, but a lot of good stuff will come out of her attempts to manage her fears. :grin

LostwithoutTara- Ahh you caught me...I have hidden a few little tid bits in here. Band camp, frogs, a garden full of mysterious herbs, come on....Gertrude and Alice? Feeling kind of playful...will try to keep it interesting.

justin- ain't it the truth. they are perfect together. Tara knows all kinds of ways to help our Wil too. Yup...she does.

Willntlover- They are in their 20's sweetie. Wil's in college and Tara has her business. Their time is parallel to what we are used to, it is just an alternative setting and way of having them meet...and perhaps fall madly passionately in love?:blush ....hmmmmm? what about that.

Grimmy, Grimmy, Grimmy...such a smarty, you are on to me aren't you. First you catch me on Willow's heels... hey now I am sure you are well aware of what she usually wears. And then you very accurately and sensitively point out how hard it is to heal from a trauma that causes such fear in someone.

You are absolutely right...but she does have a good teacher...kind of makes one wonder what the story is really about though. :hmm Fear? Frogs? Horses? Boots? Relationships? The Journey? Whoops...shhh, don't tell anyone.

I will post Chapter 3 as soon as I get a chance. Thanks for your readership and all your thoughtful responses.

Back soon,

Athame.

I'm truly grooving on the setting for this new fic of yours. Being raised around the equus-type thing I always identified with Tara's desire to share it with Willow. Too bad those pesky poltergeisty kids had to interfere with a nice moment.:whistle

References from the 1st installment in which I reveled:

1. Joan Armatrading - what a nice blast from my past;

2. Alice (the bookish) and Gertrude (the headstrong). I thought this might just be a fleeting thing with the horsey names *until* update the 2nd...make me :rofl why doncha?;

3. Carrot-taking root-what a hoot!:D You've always proven to be deadly with a pun.

An all-girl horse farm...what's not to like?:glasses

Goodmorning all...just checking in. I have Chapter 3 completed and am just waiting for a block of time to post. Until then, a few responses:

Tara shadow- Hi, I am glad you like it. I have been wanting to set them here for a while now...I am happy to know it is working.

Cindy Lou Who- Yay...I always wonder if people catch some of the little subtle and sometimes not so subtle gems I try to weave into my stories. Thank you for letting me know. It is part of the fun I have in writing these stories.

Mocha Fiend- Hi there and thanks for reading. I am so glad you like it. I like the horsies too...they are filled with endless possibilities:grin

Stroke of Luck- Touching...it is always the touching...they are leading themselves unconsciously into something...well Willow anyway...with all this touching. Funny how these two are always drawn together this way. As for the all girl farm...I promise all girls, all the way.:wink

LostwithoutTara-Yes, our Willow always the fashion queen...sexy, sexy girl even in the mud.

Xita-I am so happy you like this. I always like bringing out the strong and confident Tara. I have always had the sense that although she is shy, she is comfortable with who she is as a lesbian. She may not seem so shy here...but that is because it is her turf...her own natural environment where she feels more comfortable with being who she is on all levels. I like her here and am having fun with this...glad you are enjoying it too.

Thanks for your thoughtful responses, they always feel good to read and they put good fire in my engines.

I will try to post later today...if not, I promise to have it up tomorrow am.

Will see you all soon,

The Taming of Willow Fear....Chapter 3.

Tara sat back on the flat bed of her truck leaning against a bale of hay. She let her feet dangle and swing, she let her mind wander. She was thinking of Willow, again. A week had passed and it was time for Willow's return. All week long Tara had waited, all week long she had thought of Willow. 'I'm her teacher' Tara would try to remind herself, 'I shouldn't get involved.' Yet Tara could not get Willow off of her mind. Something about Willow had moved her. Something beyond Willow's beauty or fear. There was something compelling about the lithe red head, something connecting, something completing.

Tara rose to her feet pulling her gloves from the back pocket of her jeans. She needed to occupy herself while waiting. She needed to distract herself from the fear that Willow would not come. Working always helped Tara, it was in her work that Tara felt most at home and balanced. She lifted a bale and swung it easily off the end of the truck onto the pile on the ground. She loved the way her muscles felt when in action. When she did this kind of labor she loved the feel of her body as it moved. Tara was never one for sports, she always felt too uncoordinated. She could never join a team, she was too shy. Tara liked individual physicality, she preferred her own quiet activities like horsemanship. She liked to feel close to nature. Here she was her own master, here she could do anything.

Willow and Xander saw Tara on the back of the red pickup as they pulled up into the yard. In blue jeans and a white tank Tara's muscles tightened and shifted as she easily tossed a bale onto the ground. Willow was mesmerized, all she could do was stare. Tara's hair was back today and she looked like a goddess standing a top her mountain stopping only to wave a gloved hand, her tanned skin shining in the sun.

"Wow" said Xander.

"Yeah" said Willow unable to take her eyes away. 'She is more beautiful then I remember' Willow thought biting her lip.

"Hey, aren't I supposed to be the one who is all with the wow, I'm the guy here. You never told me she was so, uh you know, hot... in an outdoorsy, horsy, girlie kind of way."

"Yeah" said Willow again not really listening. Tara was jumping down from the truck. Willow was awestruck, her heart pounding. She wanted Xander to shut up so she could concentrate on the vision now coming towards her.

"Introduce me Wil" said Xander.

"Huh?"

"Introduce me".

Willow shook her head snapping out of her hypnotic state. "Huh? What? Uh, no, sorry no, uh, I gotta go, can't be late. Sorry. Bye".

"But Wil..."

"See you later Xander, bye." Willow said rushing desperately to get out of the car, closing the door quickly. She wanted to get to Tara before Tara reached the car.

Xander was confused. Willow had always helped him with his girl quests before. All this horse stuff sure had her addled. 'Yeah' he thought, 'it must be the horses'. Xander shrugged his shoulders and put the car in drive. Xander had learned to be patient with Willow's eccentricities over the years.

"Willow, hi I am glad you came back" Tara said smiling as she approached. She stopped several steps away to appraise the new and improved Ms. Rosenberg.

Willow was wearing boots, riding boots. She had on Levi's and a western style shirt buttons open down to almost reveal her cleavage. Willow was grinning from ear to ear. She was clearly proud of herself.

'Oh great goddess' thought Tara, 'why are you testing me so?'

Willow looked adorable again, and sexy. She was more beautiful then Tara had remembered. Willow had such spirit, such light. She was gorgeous and cute, sexy and vulnerable all at the same time. Tara's heart began to pound, her hands began to sweat. She needed to think of something to say, quickly.

Willow thankfully beat her to it. "Howdy partner" Willow drawled swaying forward and tucking her thumbs in her belt loops.

Tara laughed. "Well howdy there Miss Willow, you sure are looking fine today in your riding clothes. Where's your six-shooter?"

"Left it back at the jail Miss Tara, didn't think I'd need it now that Black Bart's in jail. No more stealing your horses ma'am, his horse stealing days are over. So no more guns for me, I'm retiring now that your girls are safe."

"Oh thank you Sheriff Willow" laughed Tara again marveling at how silly Willow could be, "How about you and me go visit the girls so you can see for yourself what a wonderful thing you've done".

Sheriff Willow took a deep breath and went a little pale, "visit the girls?" 'Uh oh, not working as planned again'.

Tara smiling reached out and took Willow's hand. "Good, I thought you would want to go see them."

"Tara, I uh..."

"That's right Willow it is always better to get these things over and done with first."

Willow found herself suddenly mute. There was no joking her way out of this, she saw the determined look in Tara's eye and instinctively knew not to protest. She followed quietly as Tara led her by the hand towards the stable. She could just barely smell the scent of fresh air, hay and spice coming off of Tara's skin. Willow focused on a freckle on Tara's shoulder. 'What is it about this woman?' Willow wondered feeling she could do almost anything for her.

Tara's eyes flickered, she had heard Willow. 'She's thinking about me' she smiled.

Tara led Willow to the stable and with little to no bravado this time quietly walked her through simply holding her hand.

Willow wanted to close her eyes but didn't. She focused on the feeling of Tara's warm hand in hers. She liked touching Tara, it was comforting and safe. As Willow walked through she realized that her panic was not nearly as great as the first time. She didn't want to run but she also did not want to let go of Tara's hand. Was it the fear or was it Tara?

Tara turned and looked at Willow as they exited the other end of the stable. It was another one of those moments coming all to frequently now.. A knot was forming in Tara's chest, she was proud of Willow. Tara was compelled and touched by Willow. 'I hardly know her' Tara thought, 'we just met'. "You did great Willow" Tara managed to say in a low voice.

Willow nodded and smiled. Her heart was in her throat. "Yay me" she said in a breathy voice.

"Yay you" echoed Tara wondering if she should let go of Willow now.

"Look at me now all rough and ready and doing the deed right away" Willow said changing her tone and puffing out her chest.

Tara coughed at Willow's choice of words and fought to turn her eyes away from Willow's proud breasts. She blushed in spite of herself and let go of Willow hand. 'Goddess Tara... stop it, control, control, control'. Tara's brain felt like it was short circuiting, it was clearly trying to separate itself from her body or vice a versa.

Willow frowned unmistakably at the loss of Tara touch. She dragged her foot in a circle in front of her considering what to say next. "So teacher, what now?" she asked peaking up at Tara.

"Well you just took a big step Willow" said Tara finding her voice again, "how do you feel?"

Willow thought about it a moment and then grinned her best Willow grin. "Great, I feel great".

"Good, are you ready to go back in and just be in there?"

"Uh, no, I like the drive by thing...don't you think I have done enough for today? I am satisfied."

"I hardly feel like I am teaching you Willow, if this is all I do."

"But you are, look how far I've come, you are doing great. I couldn't imagine doing this without you. Actually I don't think I could." Willow reached out and touched the cool skin of Tara's arm to emphasize her point. It was also a good excuse to touch her again.

Tara felt Willow's fingers warm her body immediately. It was like the completion of a circuit complete with electrical charge.

"Show me your garden."

"Excuse me?" Tara eyes grew wide, she was blushing again.

"Your garden, you know flowers and herbs and such. You know the fruits and vegetables of your labor" Willow grinned.

Tara was about to drop. Day two and everything was already all about the touching and the energy between them. Tara was attracted to Willow. How could she teach her when she wanted her so much. This was not a casual attraction, not just the appreciation of a wonderfully interesting and sexy female, it was something so much more.

Willow noticed the change in Tara's demeanor. "Did I say something wrong, are you feeling okay? If you don't want to do the garden thing I understand. I can just be done for the day. I will wait here until Xander comes back to pick me up.

Tara shook her head no and tried to move her feelings back into check. "No Willow everything is fine, its okay."

"You sure, Xander will come, we can be done." Willow was worried.

"No Willow, really it is fine. Who's Xander?" Tara could not help but ask.

"My friend."

"Your boyfriend?" asked Tara unable to help herself.

Willow laughed, "Xander my boyfriend? No no no, he is my kindergarten buddy. It is hard to take someone seriously who you have seen in their underoo's."

Tara smiled at the thought of a grown man in underoos. "Underoos?" she said.

Willow grinned again, it was a silly smile. "Yes, underoos. There was somebody once but he uh...we uh..well, I have kind of sworn off men for awhile. It did not end well."

Tara was not sure whether to be happy or sad.

Willow was looking at Tara, she wanted reciprocation."You?"

"Me?"

"Yes you, is there anybody?"

This was getting entirely to personal for Tara. She shifted her feet and tried to think of something non-committal to say. "Men, I mean man, no, no man, I mean nobody. I guess you can say I've kind of sworn off men too." For Tara there had never been any men.

"Oh," said Willow, "I'm sorry."

"It's okay Willow, I am happy."

"I can tell" said Willow looking at Tara intently. "I wish I could be happy the way you are, I get lonely sometimes. I often wonder if I will ever find love again."

"I am sure you will Willow, you will find love and love will find you."

Willow sighed and looked sweetly at Tara as Tara struggled once again to curb her impulses and quiet her mind.

"Garden?"

"Oh yes" Tara said turning towards the house. This was against her better judgement but she could think of no other way to keep Willow near. So many secrets, would Willow know? Willow seemed to sense things without knowing them. What would she say about Tara's garden?

Tara led Willow through the house and straight towards the back. Willow had not realized how big the house was or that the porch wrapped all the way around. When she stepped out of the back door she stopped and took in a deep breath of air. The back opened out onto a large garden or gardens. There were multiple beds that were laid out neatly with brick pathways in between. Flowers on one side for cutting and eating, herbs on the other for cooking and teas. Berry bushes and dwarf fruit trees further back with some espaliered along the fence. There was a dovecote in the center where the paths met and the colors were vibrant, the smell delicious.

"Wow" said Willow stopping to take it all in, "just wow."

Tara was pleased, she was proud of her gardens but did not share them with many. "This is where I do most of my work. The riding I do because I love it, but it is the jams and jellies, the soaps and the oils that make money."

Willow stood silently on the steps taking it all in. "I want to see" she said stepping down off the porch, "show me."

Tara talked her through the garden. There were common herbs such as rosemary, basil and mint. Then vegetables like tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce and carrot. Willow could not identify them all, there were too many. Berries and flowers, herbs and vegetables they all looked so beautiful and tasty.

"What is back there?" asked Willow pointing to a far corner.

Tara had hoped that Willow would not ask but was not at all surprised when she did.

"Those are my specialty plants that I use for remedies and other things."

'Other things?' thought Willow. "Show me" she said her curiosity peaked.

Tara took a breath and went on faith. She was a terrible liar and she hated secrets. She hoped that Willow would not recognize what she had or perhaps not realize what it meant.

'Gay and a witch' she thought. Time and time again it had proven to be too much, but this time...this time she hoped it would not matter.

Willow scanned the garden and she smiled as she began to recognize the few plants and herbs she had used before. "Witchhazel, feverfew, goldenseal, leopards bane, horehound and coltsfoot." She said gently caressing some of the leaves. She looked at Tara then back at the bed. "Witches broom, wormwood, yarrow, burdock, shepherds purse, angelica, eyebright and lady's mantle." The collection seemed endless. Willow straightened and looked at Tara her eye's wide. Either Tara was a chemist, a botanist, a pharmacist or a witch, Willow voted witch. "Lady's mantle... alchemilla vulgaris in Latin. Alchemilla means magic doesn't it?" Willow asked tipping her head and looking at Tara slyly.

Tara nodded her head slowly watching Willow with wonder. 'She knows,' she thought, her stomach tightening, 'she knows.'

Willow looked back at the bed then to Tara again sensing her anxiety. She smiled broadly and nodded her approval. "This is wonderful Tara" Willow said, carefully measuring her words. "Thank you for sharing it with me." She looked deeply into Tara's eyes feeling her heart open more for this woman. 'I knew there was something special between us, I knew we had a connection. She is a witch, a witch like me.'

Ooooo this is fun. I hope you like it. Ahhhh what to do in Chapter 4? That is the question. I promise to be back soon with the answer.

Willow 'doing the deed' , heh... poor Tara having to keep a straight face :-).

We don't know all that much about Tara in this fic yet, don't know how her familly treated her and such. She seems to have been rejected at least once on grounds of being a witch or gay, which is sad to realise. Willow won't reject her on the witchy part for sure, the gay part will require some adjustment. Good to see she didn't want to introduce Xander to Tara, heh.

Other than that I so like/adore seeing Willow all happy and bouncy, thats how I read her in this fic anyway :) . Fun to see that Willow recognized more 'witchy' flowers compared to the 'regular' flowers, heh.

They sometimes seem to hear each others thoughts, wonder when that will cause trouble. Hearing private thoughts tends to cause trouble, usually... maybe they'll get lucky though...:D

hi,

I'm pretty much the worst reader ever because I never leave feedback. I think I've read most of what you've posted on the board and I really do believe you have a great talent. This is a bit on the lighter side and I always enjoy a story light on the angst. Please keep it up, I'm really enjoying this.

thanks - Katie

OH, ever so enjoying this. It's wonderful, especially as you start to fill in who they are. We know they are witches, that Willow isn't that much different. Very lovely.

And, I have to say I love confused Xander, mr. stud lol.

I like the way Willow and Tara are nervous around each other. It's so sweet. The garden scene was great, Willow recognising more spell plants than regular ones! :lol

Oh yeah...tank-top Tara hoisting bales of hay.:thud

I agree with Xita-poor muddled Xander. This could play out to hilarious effect I think.:lol

Your choice to reveal the mutual witchiness through Tara's esoteric and arcane selection of plants was original and truly inspired.:clap

I'm still musing (based on names) about which horsie is best for Willow's first time.;) Alice seems gentlest...but others might prove good candidates as well!:hmm
