The L Word - Lesbian Series for Showtime Network

Postby Italiangirl » Mon Oct 14, 2002 11:17 pm

Here is the Official Site

Mods, you may want to move this to a different thread, I didn't really know where to put it. It's kind of news, kind of TV, kind of movie, so if need be, shuffle it on!

Apparently, operating on the heels of the Queer as Folk phenomenon, Showtime has cast and began production on an all lesbian ensemble series called "Earthlings." And, no, it doesn't appear to be a Sci-Fi show.

It looks like it has really good cast, including Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey of The Murmurs, Pam Grier, and Laurel Holloman (of The Incredibly True Adventures of 2 Girls in Love).

I wonder if this is happening in part because of the QAF backlash regarding the lack of lesbian screentime? Hopefully, whatever the reason it will provide some positive lesbian portrayals that reach a mainstream audience.

I've always liked Jennifer Beals, and Pam Grier, too. Hopefully, it'll succeed and reach a decent audience.

Thanks for that link Italiangirl. Seems like the show should be fun to watch. I don't have Showtime either, but maybe I'll work on that. I also like this quote from the Mia Kirshner link:

Quote:
"Kirshner is set to star in the upcoming Showtime series "Earthlings," about a group of lesbian friends in LA, and although it is unclear whether her character is bisexual or a lesbian, we can at least be assured that no one will end up dead or in jail this time (at least not right away)."

So that's always good news right?

That's nice of Showtime. I like Leisha Hailey. Hope it gets aired in Israel sometime before 2030.

btw, does anybody else think Kate Moennig looks awfuly like Justin (QAF)? I wonder if that's intentional. :)

i wonder if these episodes will find there way online like QAF has. I hope so 'cause it'll be the only way i'll get to watch 'em.

MIa Kirshner, LAurel Holloman, Karina Lombard, Leisha Hailey and Kate Moenning all together in a lesbian show. *sigh* dreams do come true :grin

I hope the show's good or at the very least won't have someone's girlfriend getting shot in front of them. ooops, bitterness. sorry. :/

I heard about this and was soooo happy. I love Leisha Hailey and was wanting her to do another acting thing, especially because I can not find any music of her band anymore. They changed from The Murmurs to Gush, and Gush is tough to find stuff of. I am slightly disappointed, though, because supposedly she's playing the only one of the group who is bisexual. I can't see Leisha kissing boys, it's just...strange and slightly wrong. No offense to boys, it's just that she's Leisha Hailey and I've only ever seen her do the girl-girl thing. How can I move on past that established norm? *sigh*

i really like mia kirschner, since a movie - if i am not mistaken - called "love and human remains", and laurel holloman, leisha hailey and the other names in the cast only make it seem more attractive... i suppose by the time it is released i will be back in brasil, but i am so crossing my fingers for it to be shown there too... oh well.

I don’t really get too much use out of my Showtime subscription, the only time I ever watch it is when Queer As Folk is on. Its nice to see that they’re finally going to have a series geared to the female portion of the gay audience, as Lindsay and Melanie only have a relatively minor role as they relate to the boys in QAF. I hope they don’t take this series too much into the realm of soap opera though. It would be kind of nice to see a thoughtful, candid drama involving lesbians and treating their day to day lives with respect and honesty.

Laurel Holloman also plays Justine on "Angel" and was in "Boogie Nights".

I have liked here in everything she done in the past, so this might be good as well. Course, I'd have to get Showtime to find out.

Oh, I'm so excited! This is a very good thing. Granted, I don't get Showtime but that can be changed. We need more lesbian characters on TV so desperately. I hope this show is actually good... I guess we'll see.

I should point out that Mia Kirshner (who is gorgeous - anyone remember her in Atom Egoyan's 'Exotica'?) played the evil lesbian plane bomber Mandy in '24'. Let's hope her character in this series isn't so cliched...

Willow worries that the gang won't like her anymore. Maybe she could try to rape one of them, leave a fiance at the altar, and tie up her friends so a demon could kill them. Then she'd fit right in.

Does anyone know who is producing "Earthlings" and what stuff they've done before? It might help to figure out the tone/quality of the show.

I don't get Showtime, but hopefully they'll have DVD box sets like the ones for "Queer as Folk".

How awesome

Postby Iamyouknowyours » Tue Oct 15, 2002 7:14 pm

I really do have to get Showtime now! (I've thought about it because I like QAF, well at least the first season because that's all that's available on DVD).

Here's hoping that none of the lesbian characters die or turn evil.

And that no one from ME is in any way shape or form involved.

It's about friggin time we had a show with happy lesbians.

Sex always leads to bad things on Buffy. Angel turned evil, Willow turned evil, Tara got shot, Buffy ended up dating Riley...

Updates from AfterEllen.com

Quote:
Update: production on the pilot was wrapped in late August, and it is slated to premiere sometime in early 2003.

In the October 29th issue of "The Advocate" magazine, Chaiken provided more details on the plot:

* Karina Lombard's character, Marina, is "the fabulous seductress who rocks Jenny's world."

* Kate Moennig's character, Shane, is the "stud" in the group, who "gets all the girls, all the time."

* Leisha Hailey will play the one bisexual woman in the group

* Pam Grier's character "is the woman who has been through the movement, who probably was in the Stonewall riots. She comments on all of the action and ties the show together."

Also, out actress Guinevere Turner ("Go Fish" ) wrote to this fan site that she has seen a "rough edit" of the pilot and "it looks really good." Although she is not in the pilot, she is hoping to write for or appear in the series if it gets picked up by Showtime. She also indicates that the producers of the pilot are "definitely changing the title, but no one has come up with anything good yet."

On November 3rd, Variety reported that Showtime has chosen Earthlings (and another series called "Dead Like Me" ) for a full-season order for 2003. The number of episodes and the premiere date is still to be determined.

Well officially, of course, I have to say that I have no idea what you're talking about.

boohoo. i dont have showtime... at least *The Complex* (thecomplex.tv/) is on the internet and even though it'll take me hours to download that series i'll be able to see it.

i'm certainly looking forward to more shows out there that show the reality of lbqt women. i know buffy is allegedly all about metaphors and what not but they sure slapped reality (distorted) in there needlessly and insensitively. i hope these creators realize that their words and actions do affect viewers and that it's not all about them. i hope they treat the chracters and fans with respect.

No, it is picked up. They just announced this week that Showtime has ordered a complete season for it, who knows how many episodes that entails. The first two seasons of QAF (Sho) were about 22 episodes each.

I tried to log onto the Showtime site, but access is limited to the US only (pout) - In Canada, Showcase usually pics up some of Showtime's productions (given that their subscriber base more than doubled after the first season of QAF, and with all the queer friendly programming they run, let's hope they pick it up here.) Cdn Kittens, send Showcase an e-mail expressing your interest in the show - can't hurt our chances.

If any US Kittens can dig some info up and post it for you poor deprived northerly cousins, I for one, would be eternally grateful.

Cheers!!
