Gulp, my first daily thread :yikes

I know that there are a few people here who have started to break the chains of Microsoft tyrany and to move towards computing liberation...

Um, I mean there are a lot of people here who use the Firefox so this is a thread to discuss why you love it, and want to marry it and have it's children (or maybe that's just me :p )

You can also discuss which extensions and themes you use regularly.

I use the sage extension, an RSS (rich site summary) aggregator in order to read the news from the BBC website.

I've recently downloaded webdevelop which has a lot of useful tools if you have your own website.

To those people still using IE I say, Join us, join us, join us...

I still have Mozilla as my second browser, I use it for non board related stuff. I use IE here because I like the lay out more and there are also sites I occasionally visit that only work with IE.

OK, it's not Firefox, but it's not IE either: I love Opera. The mouse gestures are the best thing ever invented in the history of web-browsing.

And it's not IE, which is a big plus in itself :p

My wife is a Visual Basic developer so we need IE on our system. but you know what, that is fine with me. I like IE and I like Microsoft.

Hell, I have logged over 10,000 hours in MS Word since version 1.1 alone.

So yeah I am happy to be part of the Collective! :p

OK, I downloaded Firefox yesterday & installed it. So far, I like it, but I haven't found the new tab button, so I'm +t 'ing it. I'm sure that it's here somewhere!!

Where do I get the extensions?? I didn't see them at the mozilla site, but I wasn't looking hard at the time. (plus, I was tired)

please explain, because I use the BBC News site news.bbc.co.uk/ and didn't know there was a way to improve it.

I have been using Netscape as my primary browser (98%) and IE for two or three sites that don't like Netscape. (stupid gits) I love the pop-up blocker & the cookie control that I get.

Another question: I use Ad-Aware SE, but it doesn't check the non-IE cookies, so I'm wondering if another anti-spyware/adware program out there does support the mozilla based browsers. I can go into the cookies quite easily & pull those that I've accidentally accepted, but I wonder about other things that might be getting through.

In order to get the new tab button you need to right click on the toolbar and select customize. This will bring up a window with all the available buttons. Just drag the new tab button onto the toolbar then click on done.

In the tools menu there's an option Extensions. This will open a dialog box for managing any extenstions you have installed. At the bottom right there's a link saying "get more extensions" Clicking on this will open up a new browser window with a list of available extensions.

RSS is a way for sites to provide a summary of their content. In the case of the bbc site they give a list of the latest headlines and a brief description. I find it useful as I can quickly scan the latest news and see if there are any interesting stories. I find it quicker than using the web interface. Anyway I'd recommend trying it out.

Another interesting extension is RadialContext. It seems to be designed for people who wish that Firefox was more like The Sims. I couldn't get the hang of it but other people might find it useful.

I found the RSS when it popped up in my status bar, clicked it & WOW! not sure I like it yet, but I will try it.

I will check out the extensions... some sound great, but I'm a geek, what do I know??

I. LOVE. FIREFOX!

This browser rocks.

The fact you can customize basically everything makes this browser so much more than IE ever could or will be. I could not live without the extensions, and all-in-one mouse gestures are the best, as are spoofstick, download manager, cutemenues, firesomething....I could go on, but you get the point. It's nice to live mostly problem free not having to use IE.

Skittles, try Spybot Search & Destroy www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

I like this program in conjunction with Adaware SE. It seems to catch what SE does not.

For all of you not using FireFox, you will learn.

Firefox is the bomb! Why do I love it? It's MY browser. I can customize it to be just the way I like it. I guarantee mine looks much different than other people's. Block images from certain servers, if you disable cookies, and you set only certain exceptions, those are the only cookies you'll ever allow! Pop up blocker works like a charm! Find as you type!! Just start typing right on your browser and it will find the word in the document, and now you can highlight that word! Tabs, sigh, bookmark an entire set of tabs and open them all at once. I love the way that secure sites show up in yellow in the addressbar and verisign ones show up green!

I love extensions so much, I cannot describe. I use tons of them.

My favorites:

Tabbrowser Extensions. I know some people don't like this one but I find so useful when dealing with tabs. I like clicking on a bookmark and watching it open in another tab. Things like that.

Link Visitor - Sigh :heart . It marks links visited or unvisited. I love that control.

Calendar - especially since I can transfer ICal files to it.

Calculator - I need a calculator that opens in my browser, end of story :d

chatzilla - IRC on your browser, hell yeah!

gmail notifier - little cute gmail icon at the bottom of the browser

download statusbar - download files straight to the statusbar, less inobtrusive than the download manager. I love this one!

statusbar clock - See the date, day and time right at the bottom of the browser. I looooove this one.

Adblock - blocks ads, but most importantly, I can block any image I want, permanently.

Cards - Need to play solitaire on your browser? Very useful especially in my little work ibook because it doesn't come with any kind of solitaire. I have to get meetings somehow, don't I?

Bookmark Backup - make automatic backups of your bookmark files each time the browser closes! It's useful for me as I like to keep a current backup of important files and what is more important than the bookmark file!

IEview - for those who say that Firefox doesn't always render a site properly. I admit that there are a few sites out there that people insit on coding for IE only. This extension lets you right click on a link and open it on IE. THis way you don't open that nasty browser unecessarily :p

Other ones I have:

toolbar enhancements - more cute buttons for the toolbar!

favicon picker - easily change the favicon for a bookmark

Permit Cookies - easily change the allow/block cookies for each site by pressing alt-c

cute menus - cuteness for right clicking menus

blockfall - like tetris

downthemall- a great extension for downloading all links in a page, like a page with lots of picture links. The new version for the latest version isn't out yet, but should be really soon!

Did I tell you, I love extensions?

I understand though that if you aren't a tweaker, you won't love all the extensions.

Oh man, this is so freaky. Last night I was thinking that if there was no weekend thread when I wake up, I'll start a 'I love Firefox' one :lol

I have been using Mozilla since before 1.0 came out and I have been using Firefox since it first came out too. When it was called Phoenix, then Firebird, and now Firefox.

Saying I like this browser is like saying this board kinda likes W/T :p

I LOVE this browser. It does so much more then IE and is infinitely more secure.

While no browser can be completely safe from any attack or security hole, I feel much safer using Firefox than I ever would using IE. I mean when even the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team tells you to dump IE, it's something to take seriously.

And for those who use browsers like Avant, Maxthon (use to be MyIE2) etc… These are just shells built on IE. So all the security problems that are in IE, are in those browsers as well.

I love how Firefox is so customizable. With all the extensions and themes. You can customize this browser till the :moo come home.

While using Opera is much better than using IE, if mouse gestures are the only thing holding someone back from trying Firefox, you can get mouse gestures for Firefox right here.

To anyone who hasn't tried Firefox yet, go ahead, try it out. You know you want to :wink

Well you know what they say, "great minds think alike" :D

The reason why I love Firefox isn't the customizabilty (though that is very cool) or the fact that it runs quickly on my trailing edge hardware, it's this quote from spread firefox.com

Quote:
Firefox is not just another piece of software. It is built by a community of volunteers passionate about maintaining innovation and choice on the web, and preserving the standards that make the Net so different from gated online communities that preceded it. Our source code is free available for anyone to inspect and hundreds of experienced developers help us make our code more secure and add the exciting new features Firefox users have come to love.

Regarding Opera, while it is better than IE, it still has the disadvantage of being closed source and as they say at NASA, if it's not source it's not software.

You're right, I do. And open source is a big plus, but I'm not sure I'd want to switch my email client again. I kinda like Opera's. Mmmh, decisions, decisions...

Firefox does not come with an email client. The email client is Thunderbird. I use that as well. I love it. I think Outlook Express is way less secure than IE even. It is apparently possible to import opera mail into thunderbird.

Apparently the Mozilla foundation wanted to have 1,000,000 downloads of prelease 1 in 10 days. They actually reached that figure in 4 days :)

wooo hooo! Competition is healthy! If IE had a real competitor it would be a much better browser by now. Instead, it's been essentially the same browser for like 5 years. Meanwhile, with the open source, Firefox continues to develop and they actually take input from anyone with good ideas on how to improve the browser. It's good for everyone!

Tabbed browsing is just the best. Particularly if you're running a search through google, and you can just click the middle mouse button and it automatically opens the result page in a new tab.

The fact that all your bookmarks are in a single html file make it much easier to store off-site. I know Netscape had this function too, and I always used it. I email the bookmark file to one of my webmail accounts as a backup. It's also handy if you're in a web cafe, or using someone else's computer - you have access to all your bookmarks.

kukulaka, Mozilla browsers support mouse gestures too. The first place I saw mouse gestures was actually in CAD software before either Opera or Mozilla had them, but I'm not sure where they started from.

WebWarlock, I can't do IE because MS won't patch their security holes. Firefox is faster and has a better set of features too, but that's just icing ont he cake.

RSS:

If you aren't using an RSS aggregator, then you're using the net the hard way. An RSS aggregator can manage dozens of Internet sites for you from blogs to mailing lists to news web sites. If a regularly updated site doesn't support RSS, I don't read it. It's great for keeping up without putting in much effort.
