Chance now available on VHS and DVD

Anything about Willow & Tara, Alyson Hannigan and Amber Benson.

Re: question

Postby xita » Tue Sep 23, 2003 10:56 pm

None of us can know what Amber has gone through to get this movie out at all and certainly I know she doesn't need my advice on how to run her career. So I am certainly not going to second guess her choices since I don't have all the facts. I am sure she's done the best she could with what she has. I am just going to support her.

And something from Little Willow:

Hey hey everyone!

This just in . . . The PAL version of the Chance DVD is faulty. Just that version, not the VHS, not the other versions. Everything else is fine. :)

Everyone who got the PAL DVD, please keep the DVD box! A new DVD is coming to you in the mail in the next four weeks.

Also, if anyone has problems with any of the items, please email bensonentertainment@hotmail.com so that we can fix and replace anything that needs fixing and replacing.

Xita, thank you for saying what I've been thinking. I don't even have to quote a particular sentence here, because I've agreed completely with your last two posts.

None of us knows the ins and outs of the Chance saga. I do know that I appreciate Amber's talent, her heart, and her integrity. And I don't think it's too much for her to ask that folks not put scenes of HER film on the Web willy-nilly. It's simple in my brain. Me respect Amber. Me no do what asked not to. Ugha bugha.

It's not as if she's asked us to run naked through the streets with "CHANCE, A Film By Amber Benson" written on our bodies in black Sharpie ink. Uhm...on a purely unrelated note, what is everyone doing next Tuesday? :wink

Hey, I just feel pretty good knowing that I've helped a little by purchasing the film/poster/picture and by telling everyone I know -- and a few people I don't (I get the strangest looks!) -- about this excellent movie.

Does anyone know what the problem with the pal dvd is?

I've got that version and I hadn't noticed anything wrong with it. So was I just lucky enough to get a working copy or is it just a small glitch that you might not notice?

kbk3022 - there is a big difference between putting some clips together and making a trailer. As for Amber using her home computer for editing - probably not - she probably used an Avid (rented or borrowed). She is a professional trying to put together a quality product not a fan putting together a clip for personal enjoyment - there is a big difference.

As for contract issues it isn't a no big deal type of thing - festivals are different from distribution. Legalities are different too. The minute you make money off a project everything changes - hence the selling of a poster and a pic instead of the dvd. AB was smart and kind to do it this way and did it because she heard enough of her fans saying - I want - so she accomadated them. (see xita's comments). Also if you don't know anything about how hard it is to make a film, and then how doubly hard it is to get it out there - then ask questions about the process don't just assume its a piece of cake to to this or that. Trust me its not or there would be alot of others out there with films out in the market - its expensive and in regards to contracts, unions and the like near impossible w/o someone big backing you.

As for making the movie availible to a broader scope of indie or digital fans how do we know what her plans are and is it really any of our business how she decided to market or distribute her film. For all we know she is working on a broader plan right now. Even if she isn't though - how is this our business?

It ticks me off that people are questioning a request from the FILMMAKER, who we are fans of, and thinking we know better than her. She asked fans of hers should respect that request. Period.

As for being convinved to buy it - as far as I can see - that isn't the purpose of this release - this release is for her fans who have begged her for a copy of her film and whom for she has graciously accomadated.

I read somewhere, some people have been having problems fast forwarding, well more to the point rewinding, so maybe that is part of the fault, Mine seems fine too, but I havent tried to FFW or RWD, so I may have to try that.

Thanks, T maclay. I haven't tried rewinding or FFing either, so that might be why I haven't noticed anything

J uk I am talking about small bursts of pixelation that appears from time to time when I play the movie. Always the same places, and on different players.

And I had not thought about the rewind or FF deal, but now it's mentioned, then I have to join the people that can't do either of those (which really sucks when you want to hear a part of dialogue again) :(

The images from my DVD aren't sharp at times, the image on screen seems to be cut into horizontal lines that aren't quite aligned and sometimes the movement isn't fluent, it's hard to explain, but it looks like the motion halts briefly at times. It is not too distracting and I would not have mentioned it, if not for this news. I can fastforward and rewind though, heh. I hope they won't have to go through too many expenses having to reprint and resend the DVDs. :(

I personally haven't noticed anything wrong with my PAL DVD... but I asked a friend of mine over at the "DVD department" at one of the companies I work for (I'm in the subtitling department), I showed him my Chance DVD and he explained to me that when you convert NTSC into PAL, the number of frames per second changes (30 for NTSC and 25 for PAL), so in that case they forgot to change this particular parameter... which results in the kind of problems you're referring to ;)

My DVD player is multizone, maybe that's why I don't have any problem... I'll ask my friend for more details when I have the chance (pun not intended but pretty cool :p ) :)

My PAL DVD is generally OK, just a few small glitches, which I actually put down to the 'quirky' nature of the editing of the film itself, so it's no biggie really

Especially when compared to the BtVS S4 Video I had... gremlins galore, but thankfully not at any W/T moments :kiss

Ah, the "I have no idea what's wrong so I'll say something technical and no-one will ever check" explanation.

Just watched my DVD again and I do have some fast forward/rewind problems. I really can't see any pixellation, but my player can handle almost any mpeg so it may well be mastered with a slightly non-standard PAL format (see I can do it too).

As a fellow Aussie, I was wondering which format you odered on DVD ?? ( USA or European )

....... or is your DVD player a Multizone player?

Actually, Victoria, BC, is in Canada. Sorry about that. I have been to Australia once though. :peace

I do have a DVD player where you can switch zones (to a certain amount of times) but NTSC is the norm here, so I got that one and it works great.

bzzt. The DVD is already in 25fps PAL, and even if it was at 30fps that would never cause the problems people have been having.

I'm not the DVD expert, that's why I asked my friend! He didn't have time to look further into it and I haven't seen him since...

Anyway, I just tried to rewind and fast-forward, and it works perfectly, so maybe not all the DVDs are defective... or I have a magic DVD player :p

Edited to rephrase that some of the people who have purchased the Chance posters/and or photos and who received a free copy of the film from Benson Entertainment have already put them up for auction on eBay. I think that's unfortunate, and I hope they don't sell.

Just my two cents.

Um... if they're selling Chance on Ebay doesn't that mean they bought it? Are they burnt copies or are they the original ones? If they're the original then I don't see the big deal in selling them. Amber still got her money. No need for name calling. Just MHO. :)

How can you justify someone being sent a replacement CD in good faith and then going on to sell what is quite possibly a faulty disc, and take money for it that they are not entitled to?

Well, I haven't exactly looked on Ebay to see who was selling the dvds, or what type of dvd they are selling, but if they're selling faulty dvds, then I can't justify that. :)

But, that was not what Ms. Peel had posted. She just said that people were selling Chance on Ebay. Now, I don't see any problem in them selling their copy on Ebay... as long as it's not faulty. :)

Thank you for editing your post emma peel.

Faulty or not is irrelevant really. But you can paint it any colour you like but the way I see it they are either going to have to sell them for less, which is pointless or sell them for more than they paid. Which is 1. ripping off the buyer and 2.taking money from Amber. Whatever way you look at it it's all kinds of wrong.
