I just saw Dogville. It was an intense and unpleasant passion play. It was a good movie too. The ending was better than Dancer in the Dark.



Nicole was incredibly beautiful in it. Look at this picture!

Yes... it's another dark movie by Lars von Trier. He totures his heroine again. And the ending is quite brutal. But it isn't unbearably melodramatic and Nicole's character doesn't die. (It isn't a spoiler because it's the first part of his USA trilogy.)



It looks like he made an Anti-American movie but I don't know... the story is too universal. We are not pretty animals, don't you think so?



The movie is an interesting experiment. It's like a three hours stage play. No real houses or trees. There are no real doors either. They just act like there is a door.

Actors are wonderful. Specially Nicole. It's one of her best roles. She is like a lost angel or Jesus. It's a real Passion play.



Still many people will hate the movie and I can't blame them.

I've never seen Dancer in the Dark, but this also sounds like one of his earlier films (and one of my faves, in a disturbing way), Breaking the Waves.

It's not a recommendation. On the contrary, it's a warning. (BTW, it's a heavy spoiler.)



Haute tension is a rare movie. It's a brutal horror movie from France. Here is a basic story. Marie and Alex are roomates. One day, they visits Alex's farm house. But that night, a bloodthirsty psycho intrudes the house and kills everyone and kidnaps Alex. Of course Marie is trying everything to save her. BTW, Marie is lesbian and has a crush on Alex.



Here is its 'suprising' ending. The murderer didn't existed. Marie was the murderer. A crazy lesbian psycho killer raped her roomate and killed her family. The end.



Marie is C?ile De France's second lesbian role. The first one is Isabelle in L'Auberge espagnole.

Hyo Shin, maybe you should post that in the lesbian cliche faq thread as well. That is just positively delightful. A psychopathic lesbian rapist murderer, I bet she was miserable as well and died in the end, just to complete the whole thing. This makes Gigli sound like a great lesbian movie.

Of course she was miserable. No, she didn't died. Her raped roomate impaled her with a big metalic stick but she survived. Maybe they want to make a sequel.

Oh she didn't die, well what a daring cliche breaking movie. I will recommend it to anyone I'll meet in the next two seconds.

Anyway, thanks for the warning, it probably would not have crossed my path, but you never know, and now I know what to avoid.

Actually I heard that Gina's character is bisexual and I think has a girlfriend in the movie. Also I read over at ELMS that her character has a sex scene with some model whose name I can't remember.

Just a little FYI I was watching one of those news entertainment shows a while back, and they said after Gershon made this movie she was planning on releasing an album. She would be getting a little help from Linda Perry, who has written songs for/with Pink and Xtina.

When did you last see Hollywood actresses on TV talking -- as opposed to talking something up?



You know, gushing about their marvelous director or wonderful co-star in their latest project, rather than really talking -- up close, with their pores and crow's-feet revealed, smoking and sipping wine and grousing about life.



Sexist dealmakers, the pain of being away from their kids, the fear that at age 30 the end is near -- there's all that and more in "Searching for Debra Winger," which premieres at 8 tonight on Showtime. Rosanna Arquette's revealing documentary is a melancholy and sometimes painfully funny exploration of the Hollywood female afterlife.



Watching the rich cavalcade of women who pass by Arquette's lens -- Laura Dern, Teri Garr, Whoopi Goldberg, Melanie Griffith, Daryl Hannah, Holly Hunter, Diane Lane, Meg Ryan, Sharon Stone, Tracey Ullman, JoBeth Williams, Alfre Woodard and Winger -- a middle-aged viewer can't help wondering: Where have they all gone? How come we don't see more of these brainy, beautiful women at the cineplex?



Roger Ebert offers the dispiriting answer: "The whole American movie industry is skewing toward the teenage male demographic," and that group has "lost interest in sex altogether."



What teenage boys want in a woman is "somebody really tough who's going to kill everyone," the Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic says, and gestures to a larger-than-life poster of Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in the new "Tomb Raider" movie.



Ebert is the only male with a sustained speaking part in Arquette's 100-minute film. The rest is given over to the likes of Hannah, 42, describing people's shock that she would take the role of a mother of a teenager; Theresa Russell, 46; Jane Fonda, 65; Charlotte Rampling, 57, and Catherine O'Hara, 49.



The high point of the movie comes when some of the women join 44-year-old Arquette for lunch and start dishing. It's not pretty; some of it isn't printable.



The fly-on-the-wall viewer hears Samantha Mathis, 33, describing a "Revenge of the Nerds" syndrome among Hollywood executives -- "These guys that can't get a girlfriend in high school . . . and suddenly they're, like, running these studios."



Patricia Arquette, Rosanna's 35-year-old sister, recalls the humiliation of having to shoot a nude scene while an executive she detests is on the set. Adrienne Shelly, 36, tells how her agent called to say she had a shot at a part and should show up for a casting session looking sexually available. (Actually, the adjective the agent used is unprintable.)



Which brings us to Winger, the three-time Academy Award nominee and star of "Urban Cowboy" and "Terms of Endearment" who became something of a J.D. Salinger by turning her back on Hollywood and disappearing six years ago.



Sitting on her lawn by a river, she exudes a matronly grace. Her unlifted face looks more lived-in. The first years of retirement were tough, she acknowledges. "I felt half-dead. . . . If you're doing housework it's pretty hard to be passionate about it."



But she isn't sorry to be out of a Hollywood which suggested she take water retention pills because in the rushes of "An Officer and a Gentleman" she looked a little bloated.



At 48, she insists she hasn't quit movies entirely and is open to offers, but the roles she wants "don't exist for me at this age."



Well, not quite. Even as she was being interviewed on her lawn, Winger was costarring with her husband, Arliss Howard, in a small movie drama called "Big Bad Love."



And some of those interviewed think age is making them better actresses.



Gwyneth Paltrow feels "that my whole career is ahead of me in terms of who I will become as an actress . . . I feel like I haven't done anything yet."



That's a 30-year-old Oscar winner talking.

Y'know, I'm already afraid that a Xena: Warrior Princess movie may never be able to be made, as (the only actors I'm remotely interested in seeing in it) Lucy Lawless is "already" 35, and Renee O'Connor 32. (Compare that to the stars of Star Trek, who were in their late 30s and 40s when the show went off the air, and the first movie wasn't made till 10 years later: did anybody care? Hell no! Except for maybe Shatner's rugs )

Further proof that anything out of Hollywood isn't worth viewing to me. I for one am waiting with bated breath for a movie with Jessica Lange in it. One of the finest (and most beautiful) actors out there shouldn't be this long without a role.

I've seen it now and I wanted to comment. It was very sad and depressing to watch "Searching for Debra Winger." I love all those actresses and it's depressing that the industry is just not giving them the work that we all deserve to watch. I would be tired of having to scrounge for the few decent female roles.



I am glad Amber is making her own movies. I am afraid she just wouldn't put up with these people and it's best she writes decent roles herself.

Oh! No wonder why this sounded so familiar! I saw it at Outfest San Diego a couple of years ago!



It was filmed in San Diego by San Diegans, and is thus very San Diego (I didn't realize it when I saw it, because I didn't live here then). The PFLAG people featured in it are San Diego PFLAG people. The woman who made it, Helen Lesnick, 's mother was the president of our PFLAG chapter at the time.

With the film listing at tvandfilmgrrl.com as my guide, I've made a little list of the lesbian-themed ( I hesitate to say "friendly", cause I haven't seen half of them yet) showing on cable in the coming month, and decided to share it with the Kittens. Soul Survivors is the weirdest movie I've ever seen. That and Mulholland Drive. Better Than Chocolate, Catch Me If You Can, Gia, and Ghost World are all good movies.
