Whoever’s In New England

Part Four
The next morning Tara placed another call to Buffy’s to see if the Slayer was home.
“Hello?” A very groggy Dawn answered the phone.
“Oh, Sorry Dawnie, I didn’t mean to wake you. I just wanted to see if Buffy was home.” Tara winced at the idea of waking Dawn up so early.
“Uh, no She…she went to uh…visit our cousin in Sacramento yesterday. She’ll be back in a couple of days. What’s going on?” The teenager didn’t like lying to Tara but she knew she had to keep Willow’s secret.
“Oh, uh…n…no Dawnie…I…um…it’s nothing...r...really. I’ll see her later I guess.” Tara talked with Dawn a few minutes more and then hung up.
The second she hung up the phone rang. Startled, Tara grabbed and stuttered out a hello.
“Hey, Baby! I just wanted to call to say hi and tell you everything’s going good here…the meeting went well and I should be home in a couple of days ok?” There was a noise in the background and Willow took her mouth away from the phone, her voice wavering as she tried not to laugh. She whispered something to someone and Tara’s heart caught in her throat.
“I said,
stop. You’d better quit.” Willow giggled and then put her mouth back to the phone.
“Sorry some people are distracting me.” She told the blonde nonchalantly, not aware of the utter turmoil her lover was in.
“I h…have to…to go Willow…I…just need to…bye.” Tara dropped the phone into the cradle with a sob. She did have someone else. A
female someone.
“T...Tara? Hello? Tara? Honey? Ok, she hung up on me.” Willow stared at the phone in confusion.
“She what?” Buffy gave Willow a concerned look.
“She said she had to go and hung up.” Willow raised confused eyes to look at her friends. “She sounded upset.”
“Maybe she just had to be somewhere.” Faith suggested weakly.
“She’s never acted like that before.” Willow ran her fingers through her hair in worried contemplation.
Willow’s mind flashed back to yesterday afternoon when she had left. Tara was all quiet and mostly non responsive. Willow remembered the brief moment where Tara had stiffened and didn’t look at her. Willow had assumed it was because Tara would miss her but somehow looking back that didn’t seem right. Tara seemed like she was prepared for the worst almost as if…
“Oh My God!” Willow clapped a hand over her mouth as a horrible thought crossed her mind.
“What?” The Slayers demanded their bodies tense and ready to pummel something.
“I think maybe Tara thinks I’m here to see someone.”
“Uh, Will, you are.” Buffy gave her a look of utter cluelessness as Faith’s eyes widened in dawning horror.
“No, B, not just anyone…someone
else.” Faith grabbed Willow by the shoulders. “Call her back!”
“And tell her what?…Oh…I’m planning on asking you to marry me and I’m a big ole chicken and I had to ask Faith for help to get everything put together for the perfect proposal and I made you think I was cheating on you! That is sure to go over well!” Willow huffed.
“Call Dawn.” Buffy said as Willow opened her mouth to continue her babbling rant.
“Tell her she has to run interference.”
Willow snatched up the phone and quickly dialed the Summers’ residence only to hear the annoying beeping sound that told her it was busy.
“Dawnie! Get off the phone!” She growled, holding the phone away from her ear.
“Oh, great! Now what?” Willow slammed the phone down, nearly hyperventilating in panic.
