Title: Afterburn

Authors: robotguru (Chris) and ambersagoddess (Rei)

Rating: Knowing us two, soon to be NC 17

Disclaimors: All BtVS characters belong to the usual people, tracks, teams mentioned and SINN (Sports Interactive News Network) belong to Aklaim, producers of Xtreme G Racing and XGRA for the PS2

Summary: Yes, this is another crossover fic. The year is 2080 and motorsports has evolved to supersonic speeds with brutal weapons and even more brutal riders

Words in italics are usually thoughts, use your discression on that however

***

Bikes zoom past the stands as a small crowd cheers. The XGRA were hosting invitational races as riders went all out to earn contracts with the biggest teams in the XGRA championship.

In the stands were scouts watching how the riders handled the relatively slow bikes, they were by no means push bikes but still, they would stand no chance even against the sub sonic class, the lowest class in the XGRA professional circuit. Among these scouts was Alicia Raye, the manager of the all girl team, Vixen. Next to her, wearing the purple team colours of her team, was the rookie sensation, Willow Rosenberg.

“I know you have to be here, but I was due an off day.” Willow, evidently, wasn’t too happy to be watching the rookies. Alicia would normally have agreed, however, Team Vixen had ridden a rider short since the death of Willow’s last teammate, Amy.

“There’s two reasons I’ve “dragged” you here Ms. Rosenberg, firstly, you need to see the talent here just as much as I do.”

Willow looks across at Alicia, “And I assume a “firstly” is closely followed by a “secondly”.”

Alicia looks grim, “As good as you are Ms. Rosenberg, even if you win, we get outscored if a team manages second and third place, if you are unwilling to work with another partner, you’ll soon find that these are the only races you’ll take part in, I wanted to wake you up to that fact.”

Willow looks a little shocked, sure she had never been much a team rider, but she had always been around the top riders, she did see Alicia’s point though. “So, who are you looking at?”

Alicia smiles, point made, “There is one rider I’m keen to sign, a young Ms. Maclay, she did quite well on the Peaks.” Alicia was talking about Vostok Peaks in Antarctica, a mountain track that wound it’s way through a military base. “Rumour has it that Starcom are after her, there’s no way I want to lose her to those guys, and considering most of them are misogynistic pigs, she oughta be good of they’re after her.

Starcom were Vixen’s main rivals, the most brutal rider in the championship rode for them, Angelus. Willow shivered, remembering that fateful day, the worst thing about it was Amy on the radio, she knew that she was going to die.

The riders raced past the finish line of Dunroth’s Folly to start the second and final lap, since this was pure racing with no weapons, the riders could only jostle for position, banging bikes together as they sped along a loose hairpin corner before hitting a tight loop the loop right corner. The commentators kept the crowd informed with a constant play by play.

“We can already see rivalries starting to develop, Maclay and Warren have fought tooth and claw all throughout this series.”

“Warren’s bike is heavier and he is using this to his advantage, Maclay isn’t gonna just let herself get pushed around however, her extra speed is ideal, especially when they meet the speed strips.”

Warren’s tighter handling gives him an edge as the two lead bikes exit the tighter corners. A full two seconds ahead of the third place bike, Tara isn’t about to give up as they pass the giant bronze statue of Hercules that guards the valley. Warren hits a speed strip half a second earlier than Tara but now that the track is straighter, Tara has the advantage.

“This part of the track is ideal for Maclay, we haven’t seen a woman with this much attitude since Rosenberg when she was in this situation two seasons ago.”

“Don’t count Warren out yet, Maclay will need a good two second lead before reaching the split track if the last lap was anything to go by.

“Yeah, that figure of eight crossover is brutal, I remember the collisions as one path crosses another.”

“And right before the finish line, it promotes superior handling. Beautiful! Maclay nailed those two speed strips, using every inch of them, that should give her an edge.”

Back in the stands, Willow and Alicia watch away on the big screen, sometimes finding it hard to keep track of who is who as all bikes are grey considering that none of them have team colours. Usually, only the top couple in an invitational series will get a contract. In Scavenger City, Warren had steamrolled Tara into a wall leaving her to finish in fifth of the eight hopefuls with Warren in third. At Vostock Peaks, Tara proved that she has the speed and reactions as she won by two seconds over Warren. The points gap in both cases was ten points. This left the clincher between the two of them lying here at Dunroth’s Folly with third, another woman, a mere five points behind the two.

“She’s doing quite well, The Folly isn’t the best track for the smaller bikes,” Willow observed.

Tara approached the figure of eight section of the track about a second and a half ahead. In the last lap, she had made a mess of this section, Come on Tara, make it happen. She opts to go right at the first turn leaving her a natural left at the next, she crossed the middle, her back tire being slightly clipped on the way out. Tara fishtails her way into the left turn keeping control by the skin of her teeth, riding up the bank of the track. Half a wheel behind Warren, she hit the one hundred metre sprint to the finish as the fans will on their favourite rider, bit by bit, Tara makes up the gap and the two cross the line in a dead heat.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen this folks, Maclay and Warren tie the invitational series.”

“Both Starcom - the reigning champions - and Vixen are headhunting today, I’d say this rivalry can only intensify.”

“With the season soon starting, imagine if two riders already with bad feelings towards each other end up on two teams that hate each other.”

“This is all we have time for today folks, from all at SINN sports network, goodnight.”

On the track, Alicia runs down to meet Tara as Willow watches on. The pod at the top of Tara’s bike opens and Tara presses the button that pops the bike on its stand. She opens her facemask and takes a deep breath before unbuckling and removing her heavy grey helmet and shaking loose her blonde hair.

As Tara begins to stand up, she sees a shadow standing over her. She looks up to see Warren with a look of anger on his face. “You got lucky this time bitch, you won’t be so lucky when I come out with all guns blazing.”

Tara raises an eyebrow but decides to save the trashtalk as she sees the instantly recognisable face of Vixen boss, Alicia Raye walking towards her. “Ms. Maclay, a word if you will.”

***

Willow sits on her bed in her hotel room, one leg curled under her body, tears running freely down her face. She holds a photo of her former team mate and childhood friend, Amy, showing them in happier times. Before that bastard killed her. A “kill” in the XGRA usually meant the destroying of a bike and the rider relying on life support for the rest of the race, in this case…the crowd may like it when a rider sadistically makes a shield crash before using a powerful weapon but it occasionally ends with a fatality, Amy was one of the unlucky ones. It’s my fault, I convinced her to try out. I’ll never forgive myself…nor him.

***

“Two new signings in the XGRA today folks, Tara Maclay has joined Team Vixen to race alongside crowd favourite, Willow Rosenberg. Starcom have snapped up Warren to race alongside the current XGRA Global Champion, Angelus. Tara and Warren already have bad blood and they now take their places in the biggest team rivalry in XGRA history.”

Representatives from both teams are around the room as both give a press conference over their newest signings. Already, the tension can be felt. Tara officially signs a contract as she wears the logo of the Vixen sponsors, Inoca, emblazoned across her chest. Willow puts her arm around her as both girls give a “V” sign with their fingers as they smile for the photos. As the cameras turn away, a red and yellow clad figure approaches them.

“So, I have another Vixen playmate huh? Should I kill her first Rosenberg, or should I put you out of your misery?”

Willow’s shoulders tense as she hears the voice, remembering the maniacal laughter that had sounded down her radio that terrible day. There was a reason Angelus was nicknamed “Soulless”, he had enjoyed himself that race as he took down his one remaining rival for the XGRA crown, permanently, this type of brutality had made him a fan favourite but not many other teams appreciated Starcom’s violent tactics.

A green clad woman with blonde hair walks towards the group, “Hello Angelus, hi ladies, just thought I’d scope the competition.”

Willow gave the newcomer a grateful smile, though rivalries were fierce on the track, Willow and Buffy had always got along off the track, Buffy knew exactly what she was doing by interrupting this little conversation. “Come to see the new gal who’s gonna kick your ass week in week out Buffy? I hear that Terranova think they have a chance against the Vixens this year.”

Tara gives a half smile as Willow and Buffy engage in light hearted banter but then shivers as she catches the cold look in Angelus’ eyes, a look that says “I am gonna make what remains of your life a living Hell.”

I love the concept. Warren seems like a jerk per usual, and Angel is bleh... -rolls eyes- can't wait to see where you head.

I love this concept and like other have said, very interested to see where this goes.

Also as a side note (and others please don't hang me or anything, but...) I enjoyed that fact that as soon as Willow and Tara met -- it was like meeting any other person. No glitters or flowers blooming in the background, or words of the love and first sight. Not that I don't want the inevitable duo to become a duo, but I enjoy the idea of falling in love and characters sort of working for it for a change (heh). Also it's just plain fun (some might say mean) when two people are in love and don't know it.

Hopefully I'm not presuming too much!

Wow! This is something different, no question about it. Tara's a speedster, huh? Well, in my racing game days I always used to prefer stability and handling (although it'll give you some idea of how ancient my racing skills are when I say that they date back to F-Zero - the original), but if that's Warren's specialty, I hereby renounce it and wholeheartedly embrace the idea of going as fast as humanly possible :) I certainly wouldn't be sorry to see Tara finesse her way through the tracks while Warren and his ilk get increasingly frustrated and being unable to catch her no matter what weapons they pack, and eventually wipe themselves out trying.

Also, I'm really looking forward to seeing more of Angelus. Recent events have turned me right off Angel, the hero, but Angelus is a different matter - he's great to hate. And Warren's exactly his kind of hench-slime... a great contest in the making between his thugs and our beloved superspeed girls.

It is actually different to see Willow and Tara meet without harps playing and glitter forming in the air - we Kittens love our romance cliches :) - but it's more than understandable, from what I grasp of their situation. Willow's recent loss aside, even in ordinary circumstances they must have developed the mind-set of early air aces - adrenaline and emotional detachment. Death could come at any moment, so they wouldn't be quick to form attachments to anyone else, when it's possible they'll be gone in an instant. Of course, that makes it a tough road for Willow and Tara to open up to each other - a good thing, then, if they develop more than a passing fancy for each other - they'll need it to get past the fear of losing each other on the track.

I'd love to see more of this story. If you'd agree, I'd very much like to host it on Through the Looking-glass (alia.customer.netspace.net.au/glass.htm ) as well. Would that be okay with you both? Best wishes, and bring on the racing action at your leisure :)

Hey all, thanks for the feedback

I might as well say that i've changed a few of the team colours (ok, i shoulda played a little bit longer :p ) and a few things are gonna be different from the game. On the matter of team colours, i think the original Vixen colours were much better than XGRA's weak orange and white so i've gone with purple :p

Sure Chris (Cook) host ahead, and as Rei mentioned in her fic, QoT isn't being discontinued, i'm just waiting a week till i have the house to myself so i don't get teased for watching Aladdin :p There will be an update on that soon.

Rei, i just wanna lay the framework, then you'll have more to do, don't worry :p As for the wrestling rants, the indy feds are much better than the overrated WWE...i'd watch Doug Williams vs CM Punk over HHH vs HBK any day of the week :p I'll shut up on that now :p

As i work on an update, i'll leave you with something i said to a swine that tried to nick my coke, "I'm very ill and very contageous, if you come anywhere near me, i'll breathe on you". He backed off quite quickly :p

Thanks! :) Good call on the team colours too, purple is much sexier than orange... orange? Honestly, what were they thinking...? I do have one question though, is this story called Overdrive or Afterburn? The thread title is the former, but the header info says the latter, and I don't want to go putting the story on site with the wrong title :) Good to hear there's more Queen of Thieves on the way; I sympathise with your problems being caught watching Aladdin, I've got this odd habit of watching old She-ra tapes myself...

This is basically an info chapter, it gets better :p

***

The garage doors opened as Willow, Tara and Alicia headed for the Team Vixen lockup. Willow walked straight to her bike and put opened the hatch, she then placed her hand on the middle of the screen. A bar of purple light moved underneath Willow’s hand, this soon stopped and the bike did a self diagnostics as a cool female voice welcomed her. “Systems online, good Morning Willow.”

Alicia looked across at Tara, “As you can guess, different teams configure their bikes in different ways, they don’t want any other teams to find out any advancements they have made. All XGRA bikes require a hand scan for the rider, this matches fingerprints, hand span and DNA. Only when a bike is online can changes be made to the bike or specifications viewed.” Alicia shows Tara another purple bike, “This one is for you,” Alicia takes Tara through setting up her bike after using her own hand print, as a team boss, she has the right to access any Vixen bike.

Willow sits on her bike and presses a button to close the hatch around her, Alicia tells Tara to do likewise. As the hatch closes, Tara can see that a screen rises up as the hatch seals. The screen shows what she can see in front of her and a few other things. Willow’s voice comes out of the speakers in Tara’s bike. “This is a little different to the bikes that you are used to, so I’m gonna take you through it. First the comms, you can switch your comm to two frequencies, one that all riders share and a separate one that only the teammates and bosses can contact each other on. I am currently talking to you on the all access channel. If I press the radio button,” there is a click on the comm, “Now only you can hear me.”

“Got it.”

“From here, you can also make changes to your bike, you can change the downforce from the wings, the ride height and the power of the airbrakes, you can only do this before a race, not during. You can also call up track maps and telemetry. Now look at the screen. On the top left, there is a counter showing your position and how many bikes are left in the race, top right and you have the lap your on.”

Tara sees these things, “W-what about the b-blank square in the top middle?”

“That is your secondary weapon status, you advance through weapons by picking up portals, these are green spheres, you press the second trigger once to select a weapon and then once more to fire it. On the right of the screen is a straight line, this shows all the riders and the distance they have covered on their current lap, bottom right, you have your speed, current lap time and previous lap time. The bottom is something you never want to see in use, this space is used to warn you that your shields are low. The arc on the bottom right is your shield energy, bottom left is your weapon energy, these regenerate over time.”

“W-what are these s-secondary weapons?”

“On the sub sonic bikes, you have Vampyr, Mines, Accelerator, Invincibility and Full Ammo. When we ride the sonic bikes later in the season, we also get Rapier, Full Shield, Double Hit, Overlord and Deathstrike. Any more questions?”

“No.”

“One more thing, different teams have different primary weapons, ours are the Vulcan Cannons, these fire uranium tipped bullets.”

Alicia’s voice comes over both speakers, “Thank you for that Willow, you ladies are free to socialise at the bar, just don’t get into any trouble. The team seedings take place this evening so you’ll want your uniforms.”

Willow and Tara pop their hatches and climb out of their bikes, Willow looks across at her new teammate, while she had kept away from company since Amy’s death, she wasn’t about to leave her partner alone at first. “Come on Tara, let’s see who’s hanging around.”

***

Willow and Tara wear casual clothing as they enter the bar, there is a hubbub of noise around the room as riders and fans mingle. Security guards stand near the doors in case anything goes wrong.

Sat at a table, Buffy sees Willow and Tara and waves them over to sit with her and a few companions, Tara sits down as Willow heads to the bar. “Hey Tara.”

“H-hey.”

“Just been shown your new bike eh? You’re in safe hands with Willow, there’s a reason that Amy was so good and that’s cos she is, not that that means I aint gonna kick her ass next week.”

Tara gives a half smile, a dark haired woman speaks up, “You gonna introduce us or what Buffy?”

“Oh yeah, how rude of me, this here is my teammate, Faith, trust me, no one is as crazy as this gal.”

Faith mock bows, “I’ll take that as a compliment coming from the head honcho of the insane institution.”

“That you founded darlin’, anyway, those guys across the table are from Team Palus, last years runners up.”

Willow hears this as she comes back to the table, drinks in hand, “Dunno how, Jonathon and Andrew get half their moves from watching Starwars movies, man those are old.”

Jonathon speaks up, “Don’t diss the classics Rosenberg, you may end up with our bombs up your ass. Besides…the speeders were cool and…stuff.”

Andrew nudges Jonathon, “Dude, you just told them what weapons we’re using this year.”

Jonathon and Andrew bicker as a girl looking similar to Buffy but younger joins the table, “Hey Buffy.”

“Hey sis, meet Tara,” the girl smiles at Tara and sketches a wave, “This is my younger, sister, I might add that she’s never beat me.”

The girl pouts, “Well Team Manta are upgrading this year so the Summers on everyone’s lips is gonna be Dawn…wait…that sounded dirty.”

Willow shakes her head, “You’re crazy Dawn, anyway, where’s Harris.”

Willow was talking about Dawn’s teammate, Xander, “He couldn’t keep up, old git.”

Buffy nudged her sister, “Respect your elders missy.”

A young male comes running in and sees this little party so he comes to sit down. “Hey guys! You heard the news?” He receives shrugs from the rest of the table, “There’s gonna be two new teams announced tonight, rumour has it that they’re faster than the Starcom guys!”

Buffy smirks, “Well I’m slower than the Starcom guys and I beat them quite a few times, speed isn’t everything you know.”

A shadow falls across the table, “So a team claims to be able to beat Starcom huh?” Angelus stood above the group, not deeming to sit down, “That’ll be the day,” Angelus gives Willow a cold stare, “I’ll see you on the track bitch, you might wanna watch over your little girlfriend till then cos no one will save her when she is in my sights.” Angelus turns to leave.

Willow bristles but Xander’s hand falls across her shoulder, “Easy Will, save it for the track.”

Willow stood up anyway but had calmed down, “Come on Tara, time we got ready.”

Willow and Tara say their goodbyes as they leave.

***

“So what are these seedings anyway?”

Willow looks across at Tara, “They’re sortuva handicap system, the best teams start at the back. More time to make up but there is the advantage of less people shooting at you.” Willow and Tara take their seats as a speaker stands at a podium.

“Welcome XGRA riders, I am pleased to see you old hands back and to see a couple of new faces, this should be the biggest XGRA season yet. Now for the seedings. Seeded number one and starting at positions 15 and 16, Team Starcom. Team Starcom has the current XGRA Global Champion, Angelus and a new face in Warren. Seeded number two and starting in positions 13 and 14, a new team this year, Team Templar Racing. Team Templar Racing consist of Spike and Cordelia Chase.”

The room looks around to see two figures clad in red and white.

“Seeded number three and starting at positions 11 and 12, Team Palus consisting of Jonathon and Andrew. Seeded number 4 and starting at position 9 and 10, Team Vixen consisting of Willow Rosenberg and her new partner, Tara Maclay.”

Everyone looks at Tara, Warren glares daggers at her, a look she returns.

“Seeded number five and at positions 7 and 8, Team Terranova consisting of Buffy Summers and Faith. Seeded number six and starting at positions 5 and 6, a new team, Team Scarecrow consisting of Glory and Anyanka. Seeded number seven and starting at positions 3 and 4, Team Manta consisting of Dawn Summers and Xander Harris, last, but by no means least, seeded number 8 and starting at positions 1 and 2, Team Talon consisting of Darla and Drusila.”

Darla and Drusila look a little bummed at being seeded at eight but it was to be expected considering they finished last in last years competition.

“Thank you for coming tonight and good luck this season. The first race is a week today at the Santarem Reactor circuit in Brazil.”

Welcome background - I'd never heard of XGRA before now (luckily Google didn't care whether I knew what it was or not when I went searching for images for the title graphic; glad you liked it, by the way). And nice to see Willow taking Tara under her wing - all very professional on both their parts now, but I shouldn't be surprised if it's paving the way for a closer relationship. Just a wild hunch, you know :)

I have no idea whether it was a salient story point or not, but I do have to wonder whether it's possible to get around the illegality of adjusting a bike's handling in mid-race. Highly unethical of course, but Angelus doesn't strike me as the ethical type - more the 'any advantage, any way I can get it' type... A nasty creature to take to the track against, worse still when he's got genuine skill to back up his ruthlessness.

I'm looking forward to seeing Team Vixen improve on their ranking, preferably at Starcom's humiliating expense.

Oooh, this fic is still cool. I can hardly wait for the race to start. Angelus is such an asshole, he's the one we all love to hate. And Warren. Perfect villain choices.

It's insulting to the whole gender[sic] of rap.

Been a while hasn't it...

Well, that's my fault, just because I had my portion of the update in my locker, which someone locked. Damn them.

Urm.

Right.

Chris and I have been working on another fic, D101 crossover type thing. Still waiting to see if Faith'll let us do that. I probably shouldn't have asked...

Anyway.

Update:

Tara shivered as she stepped out of the doors of the airport, “A bit cold out here isn’t it?”

“Considering we are in Antarctica Ms. Maclay, that is to be expected.” The Vixens had decided to head towards the Vostok Peaks track for a few laps, the mountain circuit would be an ideal place for Tara to get used to the Sub Sonic class bikes, bikes that went two hundred miles per hour faster than the bikes she was used to. As Tara, Alicia and Willow got to the track, Willow and Tara headed towards the check in area while Alicia took a left turn towards the garages to see if the bikes had arrived.

Willow had just finished checking herself and Tara in, she turned to see the familiar faces of Buffy and Faith. “Hey Buffy, Faith, I thought you Terranova gals were going down to the Coast down the road.”

Buffy shrugs, “So did we, turns out the XGRA guys are doing something top secret down there.”

Faith reads a message on her phone and smirks, “Coulda been worse, we coulda been on our way to Culver instead. Jonathon just sent me a message saying the same sorta thing is going on over there, the team boss was livid, they were halfway to Mars when they found out.”

“And Dawnie said that she and Xander are on their way over from Santarem. So, we’ve several tracks off limits and no answers. Anyway, we gotta love ya and leave ya, Giles gets stiffy if we’re late.”

Buffy and Faith walked towards the front desk as Willow and Tara headed towards the changing rooms.

***

“You were a little off on that last lap Maclay.” Tara grew a little frustrated, she had checked her maps to find the shortest route, yet Willow still had two seconds per lap over her, and this was a track she had won on in the invitationals.

Both of the Vixen bikes slowed as they neared the pit area, Tara popped the hood on her bike and Willow was standing beside her bike. “Let’s take a look at your map.” Tara ordered the computer to bring up the Vostok Peaks map, Willow smirked as she saw what Tara had missed. “Computer, zoom in here,” she pointed to the screen, “Show speedstrips.” Tara clicked her fingers as she saw where Willow was gaining the time over her. In one area of the track, the track splits off into three tiers, a track on either side runs down towards the bottom area of the track, two middle tiers are shorter and take a slight upward path, the middle is even higher and shorter still.

However, unless you hit the top tier perfectly, whatever you do, you’ll end up at the bottom sooner or later, and Willow who had taken the bottom left route each lap was hitting five speedstrips in that area per lap, Tara was only hitting three. Willow flashed Tara a small smirk, “Shorter doesn’t always mean quicker.”

“Hey ladies, heard there was a little party on the Peaks so we thought we’d check it out.”

Willow turned her head to see Xander grinning at her, standing at the entrance to the garage, but, keeping to etiquette, not venturing close enough to the bikes to see any of the performance data for the Vixens. “Hey Harris, ’sup?”

Xander gave a small yawn, “Man, gotta love modern technology, we can get from Brazil to Antarctica in two hours but still no cure for jetlag.”

Tara smiled and gave a small laugh, Xander took a little look at Tara, not having heard her say more than two words since he met her. “J-Jetlag is psychological, s-so I doubt there w-will be a cure too s-soon.” Tara blushed a little, embarrassed with her stutter.

Xander either didn’t notice, or knew not to make that big a deal of it, “True I suppose, anyway, we’ll see you in the bar later.”

Dawn’s voice came from the other end of the pits, “Harris! Dave said to get your butt on the track right now!”

Xander gave Willow and Tara a small wink, “That’s my cue.”

***

The bar at near the Vostock Peaks track was a popular hangout for riders, travel time had decreased dramatically and since Antarctica was so remote, it was the last unpolluted place on the planet, the beauty of this place could not be brought elsewhere. Sitting around a table, Cordelia was bragging about the technology the Templar Racing team had to offer.

"Our newest technology combines offensive and defensive, high powered weapons and shields." Cordelia gloated as she sipped her expensive drink.

"Don't spill everything, Pet. We'll get our asses kicked if all the teams know our tech, Luv." Spike swooped in, his leather-duster billowing majestically behind him. Sitting, he ordered a Jack Daniels.

Willow smirked, Templar Racing's only downfall was Cordelia Chase's big mouth. Cordy’s last racing team, Talon, had lost three members in the previous season to Angelus because he knew their technology and how to defeat it. This was the reason for their low seeding.

Tara exited the bathroom and sat down on her barstool reserved next to Willow.

The redhead ordered up two Pepsis and clinked glasses with Tara.

"To your career." Willow grinned.

Tara smiled back.

Cordelia looked across at the Vixen team-mates, "Are you even listening to me?!" Cordy shouted at the two.

"Oh knock it off!" Sighed Spike, angrily.

"Yeah Cordy, you might tell the bad guys just what they need to know to kill another one of your team mates." The heated voice froze the group's spines.

"Angelus." Spike growled dominatingly.

The bleached blonde rider stood, glaring at Angelus, and his new lapdog Warren. Spike raised an eyebrow at Warren as his shoulder muscles tensed. Spike smiled thinly

"Watch your back, Peaches. We're not newbies, nothing's holding us back, your little pussy cat's got you on a chain." Spike spat in Warren's general direction.

The new Starcom rider lunged for Spike, Angelus' hand the only thing stopping him. "Save it for the race, Kid."

Spike smirked, not flinching. He wanted Warren to hit him, the promise of the newbie's race disqualification dancing in his sights. Warren looked about ready to oblige as well, but Angelus headed for the exit, Warren following, “We don’t need to drink with these losers anyway,” with one final glare from each rider, the Starcom team headed for the door.

Spike gave a short laugh, “Well…he was chipper.”

Well, one thing's for sure, Angelus is certainly a good rider - otherwise, what with everyone hating him (and with good reason), he'd definitely have found himself splattered across a safety barrier ages ago. It's good to see Tara getting the help she needs to adapt to a new class of racing from Willow. She seems to be approaching things in a fairly literal manner, looking for the shortest distance around the course and so on, while Willow's used to more esoteric elements in the race like the speedstrips.

As for Warren... it's not like I'd ever feel sorry for the little creep, so I'm actually looking forward to the first time he screws up. I doubt Angelus will be very forgiving :)
