First off, thanx so very much to everyone for the very welcomed and much needed positive feedback, I was sooo nervous about posting this fic. And I know everyone has a lot of questions about Slayer Tara’s reality, and believe me I have the answers, but all in good time. I’m guessing ya’ll figured out Buffy’s role in that reality or at least who’s character she takes the place of, which in itself throws things in a whole new direction, and details will come, but sorry, not so much in this one. Also I will try to update as much as I can, or at least as fast as I can write.
More notes: okay I’ve decided to make this an AU fic after S6, just thought I’d mention that
And yes there is W/T interaction, but more towards the end.
PART TWOTara sat on Giles’s couch while two sets of eyes watched her fixedly, if she hadn’t been so dazed from what had just transpired she would’ve laughed, it seemed like Buffy and Giles were waiting for her to do a trick or something. She took a deep breath and continued, “So, you’re saying that this isn’t my world?”
Giles coughed and Buffy tore her eyes off of Tara for a split second to look at him and waited for him to explain.
“It would appear so, you’ve…” he took off his glasses and waved towards Tara, “somehow, crossed over into this world, for reasons unknown…” he trailed off.
When she realized he wasn’t going to continue, Tara sat back and took an even deeper breath and sighed as she exhaled, “So, what now? I mean I guess we should find out how but…” she tried to think of something to say, but couldn’t think past all the jumbled questions in her head and it left her completely wordless.
The watcher decided to start from the beginning, “Um, uh, what was the last thing you recall? Uh, before the fight.”
Finally, something she could answer, “I was patrolling, it was slow so I decided to call it a night. I was heading back to your place but then everything started to spin and I guess I just passed out?” everyone remained silent so she went on, “Then I woke up in the same place –well I guess it wasn’t the same place, but I thought it was and I saw the vampires attacking Buffy and you pretty much know the rest…” she shrugged as if there was nothing else to say.
Buffy nodded at Giles, confirming that that was it.
Giles looked away into the distance like he was mulling this out in his head. He was completely dumbfounded. At first when he had opened his door this evening it almost seemed as if he were dreaming, there was Buffy which he had expected but what he hadn’t expected was to be confronted with the blue eyes of a girl who he knew he would never see again. He didn’t say anything, couldn’t even move, until the girl spoke to him, she had said ‘hey Giles’ the part of him that registered the words realized it wasn’t right, Tara had always called him ‘Mr. Giles’ not just ‘Giles’. The only thing he could think to say was “Tara?”
Tara nodded; everything was different, her watcher just looked at her as if she shouldn’t be there. Why shouldn’t she be there, she showed up at his doorstep all the time, he would just open the door and wave her in as usual, but this time he just stared at her. She was becoming very frustrated. Shouldn’t he be looking at Buffy that way?
When Giles looked at her with pleading eyes, all Buffy said was, “We have a situation.”
And now thirty minutes and about eight ‘oh dear lords’ (Buffy counted) later, they had put two and two together and realized that this Tara didn’t belong here. Putting aside the fact that their Tara was dead; when she told them that she was the slayer and Giles was her watcher and Buffy was killed by Drusilla; remembering when vamp Willow had graced them with her presence, it wasn’t hard to figure out.
Now it was the how. “Obviously, it must be some kind of magick or some sort,” Giles suddenly said, as if the other occupants of the room were in on the conversation inside his head, “We must figure out whom –or what, brought you here.”
“Giles?” Buffy hesitantly ventured and when everyone was paying attention she continued “Um I hate to ask this but, do you think, uhm maybe Willow…” she left it hanging the air and gestured at Tara.
It didn’t take Giles long to consider it, “It is a possibility I’m afraid, but given her current state I… I find it highly doubtful.”
Buffy nodded once and relaxed as the relief went through her.
“Willow’s here?” Tara said a little more excitedly than she had meant; the thought of seeing the redhead again almost made her giddy. But some of the things they said made her very curious, what did Giles mean by Willow’s state, how would Willow bring her into this world and why was Buffy so hesitant to ask and then so relieved when Giles canceled out the notion.
Once again the two sets of eyes were looking at her that way; Tara was seriously considering just keeping her mouth shut from now on. Then Buffy and Giles gave each other a look that made her feel even more out of the loop. She couldn’t stand it anymore, “What?”
Giles shrugged, “It’s going to come out anyway.”
“Again I ask what?”
Buffy exhaled the breath she was holding, “Look Tara, how… what is Willow like in your world, obviously you know her…” she trailed off and waited for Tara’s answer.
“Well actually it’s more like I
knew her, we went to high school together, I saved her a few times but, we weren’t that close and then she went to college. Why?”
Buffy looked over at Giles hoping he would know of some way to do this but it was obvious that he was being ‘helpless Giles’, she sighed and turned back to Tara, “Well remember how we told you that the you in this reality died?”
“Yeah,” she nodded, “you said I –she, was shot by some guy named Warren.”
“Well when you –she died, it was really, and believe me when I say that this is the understatement of the year, really hard on Willow, that’s because…” she looked back to Giles to make sure she should go on which he nodded, “because you two were, um together, like together-together.”
Tara let it sink in for a minute then her eyes shot open, “OH, uh oh, you mean… that she and I were… uh…”
“WOW! This is like… wow!” She couldn’t help the little smile tugging at her face, the her in this reality was lucky enough to get the girl of her dreams, well not that lucky because… the smile quickly faded, she died and Willow lost her. It was the hardest thing for her to take in, that this Willow loved her and then lost her, if it had been her losing Willow she would’ve…”What happened?”
Buffy and Giles shared another look before the slayer went on, “Well Willow, uh went all black magick and killed Warren, and then she tried to destroy the world, but obviously she didn’t because well, here we are.” Once again,
“Understatement of the year.” Her answer was automatic, but it was the only way she could get it out, just stick to the facts. It still hurt Buffy to think about it, but not once was she ever mad at Willow for what she had done nor did she love her any less, if anything she completely understood why the redhead did it, and thinking back to Angel, didn’t blame her at all.
This was a little too much for Tara, not only was she and Willow together but Willow had killed a person and tried to end the world because this world’s Tara had been killed. That was too much and almost unbelievable, but the look the two people in front of her had seemed to prove it was real. Again Tara sat there not knowing what to say.
After what seemed like an eternity of silence, Giles concluded that it was late and enough was said for now. He cleared his throat, “Ahem, well yes I think we’ve done all that we can for tonight, tomorrow we should begin researching to find out what could’ve brought you here and decide what to do then.” He received two silent nods. “Right then, Tara I think it would be best if you stayed here tonight, I’ll go fetch you some extra linens.” He nodded and headed upstairs without waiting for an answer, which was fine because Tara didn’t have one.
Buffy felt she needed some private slayer/watcher time and excused herself to follow Giles.
“Giles, what do we do about the others, I mean,” she looked in the direction of Tara, “Do we tell them or what?”
Sighing, Giles grabbed an extra blanket and turned towards her, “I really don’t think we have a choice here, Buffy. Lord knows when we will figure this out and I don’t think they will appreciate keeping this a secret for too long.”
“Right, but Giles…” she looked almost desperate, “what about Willow?”
“I know.” He sat heavily on the edge of his bed, “I know but, I’m afraid that Willow will just… have to deal with it. Dear lord that sounds so cold, doesn’t it”
Buffy placed a hand on his shoulder, “It’s okay, I get it.”
He gave her an appreciative smile before standing back up and continued to grab more sheets. Before they started heading back down the stairs, Buffy asked, “So we bring the gang over tomorrow then?”
“Yes, I must say I am not looking forward to explaining this at all.” He started to turn but was stopped by Buffy’s hand on his arm.
“Giles, I know it’s not her but, she is, you know…”
Giles smiled knowingly, “Yes Buffy, I miss her too and it certainly is good to see her again.” They exchanged nods and small smiles before continuing down the steps. “Even if it isn’t her.” He added.
Tara looked up as they entered the living space, “So, I’m meeting the gang tomorrow?”
The two of them stopped, their eyes widening, “How did you…?” Giles asked.
Tara lifted her finger towards her ear, “Slayer hearing.” she half-smirked.
A small sheepish grin appeared on Buffy’s face, “Oh yeah, I forgot.” This was definitely going to take some getting use to.
~
“Rise and shine, sleepyhead.” Buffy entered her old room, currently occupied by her best friend.
Willow stirred as she made her way towards the window to open the curtain casting the morning light into the room.
“Mmm-early.” Willow mumbled as she wiped the sleep from her eyes then winced at the offending brightness.
The slayer sat on the side of the bed and playfully tugged on the sheets currently tangled around the waking redhead. It was a sign that she had had another nightmare, not that Buffy was surprised, Willow had them almost every night since she returned.
“I know, but I need you to go with me on a trip to a certain watcher’s house.” She kept a cheerful mood up, she made it a habit, and at first it was just to do anything to get the redhead to smile, even if just a little. They started off as almost unnoticeable smiles then little by little they grow. It wasn’t that she was trying to make Willow or even herself forget; it was just that the more she smiled, the more of her best friend Buffy could see again.
“Why do you need me to go?”
Buffy leaned over and swept a few strands of red hair from Willow’s face and smiled, “I always need you.” She said sincerely before she sat back up, “Now get up, I made coffee.”
When Buffy left the room to head back downstairs Willow lay in her bed. This was the worst part of the day, waking up alone. It made her wonder, why bother? Why bother getting up at all? She would lie there for a long time just thinking, without really thinking. She didn’t want to think so she tried to keep her head as empty as possible.
The only thing worse was going to sleep alone.
With weary effort, she kicked the sheets off and headed towards the bathroom.
As Buffy made her way down the stairs, she thought back to the phone conversation with Giles this morning. After discussing it, they had decided to just bring Willow first. She felt that Willow should be the first out of the gang to find out. And hopefully it would be easier without the rest of the Scoobies there. Just them, and then they would tell the others. Willow needed more time to process this.
But the slayer couldn’t help but feel like this was still a bad idea.
“I mean, what am I going to say, ‘hey Will, by the way I forgot to mention, Tara’s here, well not your Tara, but someone the spittin’ image of her, don’t like break down or anything, okay.’” She sighed to herself. If only this was as easy as, oh say… deflecting an apocalypse.
She sat at the island and drank from her third cup of coffee waiting for the redhead to come down. To say she was nervous was saying little. When Willow appeared, she quickly handed her a cup already made to her friends liking.
Willow gave a tiny grateful smile before taking a sip. Glancing over at the near empty pot she asked concerned, “What’s up? You’re all caffeine girl.” A worried look crossed her face, “Where’s Dawn?”
“What? Nothing’s wrong. Dawn stayed at Janice’s last night. She went over after you went to bed.” She hated lying especially about something so big; she just knew she had to get Willow over to Giles’ before she went into details.
Willow nodded and relaxed. After they finished their coffee, they headed out towards Giles’.
~
Tara fidgeted with her hands. When Giles woke her up to tell her that only Willow would be coming with Buffy instead of everyone, which she gathered was Xander, Anya and Buffy’s sister Dawn,
“So I guess in this reality Buffy has a sister,” she was kind of relieved. Sure she came a long way from the shy, occasionally stuttering girl she once was, slaying had quickly put an end to that.
“I mean it’s not easy striking fear in the evil hearts of vampires when you’re stuttering every other word.” Which is what she did when she was first called and confronted her first vamp. But the idea of being faced with people who knew her to be dead, with the initial shock and then questions with answers she didn’t have was daunting at best.
But the more she thought about it the more distressed she became. She was going to meet this Willow, and after what she heard last night about her, she knew this wasn’t going be simple.
She picked up the tea Giles had made her. It was somewhat comforting; it was like a routine she knew all too well. Even if this wasn’t her watcher he was still the same old Giles. Taking a sip she decided she couldn’t just sit any longer and stood up to stretch and began pacing.
Giles returned from the kitchen with more tea and some pastries, Tara declined the two when he offered, too tense to eat.
Sensing this he offered, “Nervous?”
Tara stopped pacing and sat back down, smiling she replied, “That obvious, huh?”
“It’s reasonable to say I know how you feel.”
She leaned back and relaxed a little, “Yeah, I guess you do.”
Silence fell between them as they got lost in their own thoughts. A few minutes later, Giles started, “Tara, I…”
He was caught off by the sound of three knocks on the door and they both tensed slightly. Tara looked at the door, suddenly even more nervous than she thought possible. She looked back at the Englishman. “So I guess, this is it, huh?”
“It would appear…” he stood up but then halted and looked at her, “Are you going to be alright?”
She took a couple deep breaths that did nothing to calm her nerves, “It’s not me I’m really worried about.”
He nodded and headed towards the door. Tara had the distinct feeling wanting to hide or something, not just be there when he opened the door. But it didn’t matter; Willow was going to see her anyway. She held her breath as Giles reached the door…
~
Buffy stopped a few feet away from the door to Giles’ apartment. Willow got one step ahead before she realized Buffy wasn’t continuing, her questioning eyes searched Buffy’s. “Buffy? What are you doing?”
She couldn’t do it this way, just let her best friend walk into that place blind. She had to say something, give her some kind of warning. She had no idea how Willow was going to take this, except that it wasn’t going to be pretty. As her best friend she had to say something.
“Will, I don’t’…” she took a deep breath and gathered her wits and tried again. “Willow, I have to tell you…”
“Tell me what, Buffy?” Willow cut in confused. Why was Buffy acting so weird? That was never good.
Buffy stepped closer to the redhead and gently placed her hands on her shoulders. “There’s someo –thing, in there,” she gestured towards the door, “and you may not believe it when you see it, but there was no other way of telling you, and you need to know this, and I… I need you to know that I’m here for you and that this is going to be really hard…”
“Buffy,” Willow interrupted, “you’re really starting to scare me. What’s going on? What’s inside Giles’ apartment…?” she was cut off by the feel of Buffy’s arms wrap around her in tight hug. Caught off guard by the act, she didn’t continue when Buffy let go and took her hand in her own and finished the few feet to the door.
Slowly she raised her hand and knocked three times.
It took a few moments before they saw the door knob turn and then slowly open, revealing Giles strategically blocking the view inside. “Hello Buffy, Willow.”
“Hey Giles.”
“What’s going on?” Willow didn’t mean to sound rude but all the secrecy was putting her on edge.
Giles slowly stepped aside and gestured that they enter. “Please, come in.”
Buffy walked in first, seeing Tara sitting on the couch, her back to them, and instinctively stood in the way trying to prolong the moment. Willow followed her in and Giles closed the door behind them. Despite the fact that Buffy tried to block the view, Willow noticed the other occupant, the long blonde hair and shoulders, she knew them, could never forget them but, but… they couldn’t be.
Then the hair and shoulders moved revealing more, the back, the arms, she was standing up. The redheads breathing became shallower and shallower. No, no this isn’t real, this isn’t… it couldn’t…
The figure turned, it was all in slow motion and then… the world faded. Buffy and Giles were no longer there, they were no longer in Giles’ apartment. Willow’s vision became narrow, focused only one thing. That face, those eyes. That face that was forever imbedded in her mind. Tara.
Tara.
Willow began to tremble more increasingly.
No. No. No!
This wasn’t real, she was dreaming, it was a dream.
Had to be.
Tears formed in the corner of her eyes. She couldn’t say anything, she couldn’t breathe and then her vision moved –no, Willow was moving. Sinking –no, falling, she was falling and then she was on the floor and crawling backwards until her back was against the door. Her knees were at her chest and she clutched them with all her might. She was shaking and tears were flowing freely.
“This isn’t real, this isn’t real this isn’t real…”“This isn’t real, this isn’t real, this isn’t real, this isn’t real, this isn’t real…” she repeated again and again. Her eyes never left Tara, who was slowly moving toward her.
Tara knew it was a bad idea, but seeing Willow like this broke her heart, her eyes were beginning to water, and she had to do something. She very slowly kneeled down in front of the redhead who was shaking her head and repeating the same thing over and over. Very quietly she said, “Willow?”
It didn’t seem like she heard Tara and continued shaking her head but stopped speaking.
“Willow?” Tara tried again. “I’m not the Tara you knew but….” She raised her hand cautiously towards the redheads tightly clasped hands in front of her knees. Willow flinched slightly and Tara pulled back a split second before trying again. Softly she touched Willow, applying just enough pressure to confirm her existence. “But, I am real.”
The slight touch seemed to jolt Willow out of her trance enough to stop shaking her head. Tara applied a little more pressure before very slowly moving her hand up the redheads arm.
“Ta-ra?” she choked out so quietly Tara would’ve missed it all together if she wasn’t so close, even with slayer hearing. Not knowing what else to say, she simply nodded.
She knew it was probably another bad idea, but wanting to comfort Willow so badly, she did the only thing she could think of and gently pulled Willow into a protective hug and was relieved when the smaller girl let her.
And then Willow let it all go and cried like she hadn’t since the day she tried to end the world.
