Title: From Different Worlds

Author: Brandi

Disclaimer: I don’t own ‘em, Joss does. I’m just borrowing them for my own enjoyment.

Rating: PG-13 for now.

Paring: W/T eventually, and maybe some others later on… not sure yet.

How I came up with this story: I found myself wondering what it would have been like if it had been Tara that grew up in Sunnydale, and not Willow. And what if Willow and Faith had been best friends instead of practically hating each other? So, I tossed the idea around in my head, added a few other scenarios and this is what came out. It sounded like a good idea in my head, but so do a lot of things. I hope it turns out alright.

Summary: During her college years, Buffy dies for a brief moment (hmm… sounds familiar), but is saved by her best friends, Xander and Tara. As we all know, when a Slayer dies, another is called. So, Faith is now on her way to Sunnydale to meet her new watcher, Giles, and her slaying partner, Buffy. She decides to bring along her best friend since childhood, Willow.

Note 1: If anything like this has been done before I apologize to the author.

Note 2: The characters are still the same, but their mannerisms may be a bit different. I figure, growing up with Faith, Willow will probably be a little less shy and a bit more forward. I also decided to make Tara more outgoing than when we first saw her on the show. There will be a lot of interaction between all characters, but the main pairing focus will be between Willow and Tara, as it should be. So, with that out of the way, I hope you enjoy.

CHAPTER ONE

The flight from Chicago to Sunnydale was long and boring. Faith stretched her cramped limps and looked over at her companion. She still couldn’t believe that Willow had agreed to go with her. True, they were best friends. No, they were more than that. They were family, the only family either of them had. As she sat back and closed her eyes, she replayed the night that had changed her life.

2 Weeks Earlier

Faith had just gotten home from a long day at work. It was 7:00 pm. Her best friend and roommate, Willow Rosenberg, was in class and wouldn’t be home for another hour. She decided to watch some TV to unwind and had just settled down onto the couch when she heard a knock at the door. Wonder who that could be, she thought. She opened the door to find an older man in glasses staring back at her.

“Can I help you?” she asked, eyeing her visitor warily. She and Willow didn’t receive many guests, especially not old men in glasses.

“Hello. My name is Rupert Giles, and I’m looking for a young woman by the name of Faith. Err… I don’t have a last name, sorry.” The man answered in a thick English accent.

“I’m Faith. What can I do for you?”

“Ah, yes. Well, as I said my name is Rupert Giles, and I’ve come here from Sunnydale, CA. I have something rather important to discuss with you.”

“Well, Rupert Giles, you’ve come a long way just to talk to me. What’s this about?” she asked, her curiosity evident on her face.

“Perhaps it would be best if we discussed this inside. If that’s alright with you.” The Englishman made no move to go inside, but what he had to discuss could not really be said in an open hallway.

Faith hesitated for a moment. She looked her visitor in the eyes, trying to discern whether or not he could be trusted. She glanced at the clock realizing that Willow would be home in less than 45 minutes. What the Hell, she thought. She stepped out of the way and gestured for the man to enter.

Leading him through the entryway into the living room she gestured for him to take a seat. “Can I get you anything to drink?” she asked. She’d never really played hostess before and wasn’t too sure what the rules were.

“No, I’m fine thank…” he was cut off by the sound of the front door opening.

“Faith, I’m home! Class let out early.” Said Willow as she made her way into the living room. She stopped next to Faith and noticed the man sitting on the couch. “Who’s our guest?” she asked.

“Well, from what I know his name is Rupert Giles, he’s from California, and he has something very important to tell me.” Said Faith, never taking her eyes off the couch. “Mr. Giles, this is my best friend, Willow.”

“Please, call me Giles.” Said the Englishman as he exchanged a smile with the redhead.

“Ok. Willow, this is Giles.”

“Hi, Giles. So what’s so important that you came all this way to talk about?” she asked.

“Umm… I don’t mean to be rude, but Faith, perhaps it would be best if we discussed this in private?”

“Whatever you have to say to me, you can say it in front of her. There are no secrets between us.” Faith said, moving to sit on the opposite end of the couch. Willow made her way to sit in the recliner positioned across from them.

“Alright, then. What I have to tell you will be hard to believe. All I ask is that you hear me out, and let me explain. I will answer any questions you may have when I have finished. Ok?”

Both girls nodded and sat back as Giles began his explanation. He told them the history of the world, of vampires, and of slayers. He was surprised to see both girls nodding as he mentioned vampires. He’d expected them to be shocked to hear of such a thing. He continued his tale, and as he neared the part of Buffy’s brief death, he shifted in his seat to look directly at Faith.

“When one Slayer dies, another Slayer is called. Since Buffy’s death was only momentary, we hadn’t expected a new one to be called. We were wrong. That new Slayer, Faith, is you.” He finished.

Faith was silent for a few moments before she burst out laughing. She laughed so hard that tears formed in her eyes. When she finally caught her breath she looked at Giles and said, “You’re joking, right? I mean, the stuff about vampires, that was believable. Willow’s a practicing witch, and we’ve seen enough to know that there are things like vampires that exist, but come on. Me? A slayer? That’s ridiculous.”

“I’m afraid it’s not.” Giles said. “May I ask you some questions? If I’m right, it may help prove to you that I am not completely crazy.”

“Sure, ask away.” Faith said, the laughter still in her voice.

“I’ve noticed several pictures of you and Willow wearing Karate uniforms. Have you recently discovered a new strength that you hadn’t possessed before? Are you suddenly able to sense movement even though you can’t see anything, or anyone? Has your coordination improved? Do your senses seem to be on hyper drive?” he asked.

Faith and Willow both looked at each other. They had recently discussed everything Giles had mentioned. They had come to the conclusion that it was due to the ten years of Faith’s martial arts training. They shared a meaningful glance, both realizing that what this stranger was telling them may actually be true.

“How do you know that?” Faith asked as she looked Giles in the eye again. Her expression was more serious this time. A look of utter confusion was now etched upon her features.

“That is part of being a Slayer. They possess super human strength and senses. From the looks on both of your faces, I assume I am correct?” Their silence answered the question for him. “I realize this is a lot to take in. I must return to Sunnydale tomorrow, but I will leave you my phone number. Please, consider everything I have told you carefully. I cannot force you to accept this calling, but I must stress its importance. Take a few days and discuss this together. Please, promise you will call me.”

Faith looked at the man once again. She was still trying to find some sort of hint in his features that this was all a joke. All she saw was seriousness and urgency looking back at her. “I can’t promise you that I’ll accept this, but I will discuss it with Willow, and I’ll call you in a few days. That’s the best I can do.”

“That’s more than I could ask for. Thank you for hearing me out.” Said Giles. He stood and shook each girls hand before making his way out the door and back to Sunnydale.

The girls spent the next few days going over what they had been told. They still found it hard to believe, but the more they talked about it, the more they began to wonder at its truth. Finally, they decided that Faith would go to Sunnydale and find out in person if it was true or not. She had objected to Willow going with her, but her friend gently reminded her that they were family, and where one went so the other one went as well. They had called Giles, and agreed to meet him in Sunnydale in a little over a week’s time.

Present

She was pulled out of her thoughts by a voice on the cabin speaker.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are now arriving at Sunnydale Airport. Please fasten your seatbelts. Thank you for flying American Airlines. We hope you have enjoyed your flight.”

As Faith fastened her seatbelt, she noticed Willow doing the same. Looking up at her friend, she smiled. “Thanks for coming with me, Red. I don’t know if I could do this without you.”

Willow smiled back at her long time friend. “You don’t have to thank me Faith. We’ve seen each other through everything. I’m not going to let you do this alone.”

Once the plane had landed the girls claimed their baggage, made their way outside the airport, and hailed a cab. Willow gave the driver the address Giles had given them. When they pulled up to the house at 1630 Revello Drive, Faith let out a long sigh. Willow reached over and squeezed her arm.

“You ready for this?” she asked.

“As ready as I’ll ever be.” Faith answered.

With that, they paid the cab driver and made their way to the front door, both knowing that what waited on the other side would change their lives forever… again.

I'm truly intrigued! :clap

You mentioned that Faith has had an emboldening effect on Willow. It seems like Willow has maybe had just a wee bit of a softening one on Faith...I'll wait and see though. :eyebrow

Interesting setup you got. I'm wondering about Willow and Tara's parents, hopefully Tara did get a set of nice parents :)

Willow learned martial arts, good girl... at least something solid to fall back on after magic. She's already a practicing witch hmm ? Interesting, did she burn the house down already or is she's less experimental then the Willow we know ?? :)

I've never liked Faith much, to impulsive for my taste but maybe living with Willow has put sense in her... heh :D

Please do continue, I like this setup and want to see where it leads us. (hopefully to a long story :) )

Wow, such wonderful feedback!

Nick: Glad to see you're liking the fic. Hope you enjoy this update. There's a little something in there just for you...

funkyasian: Thanks! I'm glad you like. Assertive Tara is just... yummm!!

C.L.W.: Charming.. heh.. thanks. So, you noticed that Faith was a little bit softer here, huh? I think we'll see a little bit more of the Faith we know when it comes to slaying, but for the most part, this is a different Faith. She knows what it's like to care for someone, and to be cared for. I figure, that's gotta have some sort of effect on her. Enjoy the update!

deixs: Thanks!!!!! Nice to see you again!

snuggle79: I'm glad I'm not the only one who found this idea interesting.

pikescoob: It's nice to see you agian too! Glad you're liking!!

Grimmy: Hee... I appreciate all of your questions. They will all be answered in good time. I'm really happy you're liking. So far, I am seeing this as being a pretty long fic.. at least a lot longer than my first one.

CHAPTER TWO

They stood outside the door for what seemed like an eternity. Faith kept looking down at her outfit, and then back up to the door again. After about five minutes of this, Willow had finally had enough.

“Faith, what are you doing?” she asked.

“I know this is gonna sound weird, especially coming from me, but… do I look ok?” She was dressed in her typical black leather pants and black boots. A red tank top that just barely touched the waist of her pants was placed underneath her black leather jacket.

“You look fine, Faith. What about me?” Willow was dressed in a pair of loose fitting jeans. She had on a black Foo Fighters T-shirt with a long-sleeved white shirt underneath. Her feet were covered in black and white Adidas campus shoes.

“You look fine too. Alright, enough stallin’. Here I go.” Faith said as she raised her arm and knocked twice on the door.

They didn’t have to wait long before it was answered. Once again, they stood face to face with Giles. Both let out a sigh relief, having feared that someone else would answer the door.

Giles motioned them inside as he said, “Faith, Willow. It’s a pleasure to see you again. I trust you had no trouble getting here?”

“Nice to see you too, Giles. No trouble at all.” Faith answered.

She stepped into the house, followed by Willow. They both took an appreciative look at the parts of the house they could see. It wasn’t fancy, or anything, but it was a definite step up from what they were used to.

“Nice place you got here, Giles.” Said Willow.

“Ah, yes. It’s actually not my house. This is Buffy’s home. In fact, if you two want to leave your luggage here, everyone is waiting to meet you in the living room.”

The girls sat their luggage by the front door and followed Giles into the next room. Walking in, they were greeted by five unfamiliar faces. There was a blonde girl seated on the end of the couch closest to them. Next to her was a younger looking girl with long, dark hair. On the other end of the couch there was another blonde with the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen, thought Willow. Seated across from the couch in a rather large lounging chair, there was yet another blonde, and sitting next to her on the arm of the chair, there was a man with dark brown hair.

“Everyone, I’d like you to meet Faith and Willow.” Giles said. He then went and pulled two chairs from the dining room table so they could have a place to sit.

Faith gave a little wave to the group and said, “Hey, I’m Faith.” She then sat down in one of the chairs Giles had provided for them.

“I’m Willow. Nice to meet you all.” Said Willow as she sat down next to Faith.

The first blonde that they had seen stood up and walked over to them. Extending her hand to first Faith and then Willow she said, “I’m Buffy. It’s nice to finally meet you both.”

“So, you’re Buffy. We’ve heard a lot about you. I expected you to be taller.” Faith said.

“Yeah, I get that a lot. Lots of power, little package.” Buffy replied. Faith smirked at her description of her size. “I guess I should introduce you to everyone.” She went around the room and introduced each member. They each, in turn, waved and said their hellos.

When Buffy introduced the blue-eyed girl named Tara, Willow couldn’t help but smile. She has a beautiful name. It suits her. Whoa, Rosenberg. Slow down!! You haven’t even said one word to her yet! Yeah, but I sure would like to! She stopped her mental babble as she heard the girl named Anya say “Well, that was fun. Now what do we do?”

“Remind me to explain Anya’s behavior to you sometime very soon!” Buffy said as she shot Anya glare.

“What’d I do? It was just a question.” Replied the confused ex-demon.

“Yes, well. Perhaps we should let the girls get some rest. I’m sure they had a long journey. Are you hungry at all?” Giles said before Anya could go off on another rant of how she didn’t understand human customs.

“Actually, I am a little hungry.” Faith said.

Willow nodded her agreement. “I could do with some food.”

Tara stood up and started to head towards the kitchen. “Will sandwiches be ok?” she asked.

Both girls nodded appreciatively and said their “thanks” as Tara entered the kitchen.

As she made the sandwiches, Tara felt a slight blush creep up her cheeks. Wow. Willow is beautiful. She has the greenest eyes I’ve ever seen. She finished the sandwiches and pulled a coke out of the fridge for both girls. She re-entered the living room just in time to hear Giles explain the sleeping arrangements.

“Buffy has opened up her home to the two of you for as long as you like. She has a spare bedroom that you will have to share, but there’s plenty of room in it.” He said.

Tara handed Faith her sandwich and coke, and then proceeded to hand Willow hers. As their fingers brushed, they both looked into the other’s eyes. “Thank you.” Willow whispered. “You’re welcome.” Tara replied just as quietly. Their gazes lingered for a moment longer before Tara turned and headed back to her spot on the couch.

As the girls ate they learned a little bit about Buffy and her friends. They also discovered that Faith would start her training with Buffy the following morning. Faith asked if she could be allowed to do her morning warm up with Willow. She explained that they both held black belts in Kung Fu and that it was a daily routine for them. Buffy and Giles both agreed, knowing that it would give them a chance to view Faith’s technique, along with Willow’s.

After everyone had left, Buffy helped the girls with their bags and showed them to their room. Seeing that they were settled in, she bid them goodnight and wished them a peaceful rest.

Lying in bed, Faith turned over to face Willow. “So, what’d you think?” she asked.

“They seemed really nice. I’m kinda looking forward to getting to know them. Especially Tara.” She answered.

Faith saw the grin that covered Willow’s face when she mentioned Tara. She had always known Willow preferred women, and it didn’t bother her. It was simply part of Willow. “She was pretty, huh?” she teased.

“Yes, she was.” Willow responded as she playfully shoved her friend.

Faith chuckled and rolled back over. “Night, Red.” She said through a yawn.

“Night, Faith.”

The Next Day

Faith woke to the smell of fresh brewing coffee. She glanced at the clock and saw it was only 7:00 am. Man, I guess these people don’t believe in sleeping in! She looked over at Willow and noticed she was still sleeping. Most mornings, Faith had to pound on Willow’s door just to get her up. Willow was definitely not a morning person. “Here we go again.” She muttered under her breath.

“Willow!! Time to wake up!” she said rather loudly and directly in the redhead’s ear. The only movement made by the sleeping girl was to reach down and pull the covers over her head. Ok, thought Faith. Time to take some drastic measures. “I guess I’ll have to do my warm up without you this morning. Too bad, you’re gonna miss seeing the Magic Shop that Giles owns. Hmmm… I wonder if Tara will be there…” A wicked glint entered her eyes as she saw the bed covers be thrown down and a now half-awake redhead sit straight up in the bed.

“Tara?” Willow sleepily asked. “Do you think she’ll be there?”

“I don’t know. She did say last night that she helped out between her classes. I guess you won’t know unless you get up.” Faith finished, gathering her shower items and making her way to the restroom. She chuckled to herself as she heard Willow hastily get out of bed and start rummaging through her suitcases. “That was too easy.”

An hour and a half later the girls followed Buffy into the Magic Box. When they had been told Giles owned a Magic store, Willow had been excited by the idea. There had been nothing like that back in Chicago. All her supplies had come from online catalogs. Walking into the shop, she was amazed at how many books and artifacts she saw. When she finished her appreciative and thorough look around the shop, she walked over and said “Good morning” to Anya, who stood behind the cash register. She chatted with Anya for a few minutes until she heard the bell of the front door ring. Looking up, she smiled when she saw Tara walk into the shop. She had on a pair of low cut jeans, some black boots, and a long-sleeved light blue shirt that showed off enough of her stomach to make Willow subconsciously lick her lips as she took in the sight.

Tara smiled when she saw Willow. The redhead looked really hot in the outfit she had chosen to work out in. She had on a simple pair of gray sweats, a white tank top that accentuated her curves nicely, and a pair of white sneakers. Her red tresses were pulled up into a loose ponytail. Tara had to slow down her breathing before she walked over to the other girl and said “Good morning, Willow. How are you?”

“Morning, Tara. I’m wonderful. How are you? I wasn’t expecting to see you here this morning.” Did that sound like I was at least hoping to see her?

“Well, I don’t have class until 11:00 so, I decided to come in this morning and see if Giles or Anya needed anything done.” I was also hoping to get a chance to watch you warm up.

“Oh, that’s cool. I was actually planning on heading over to the campus after I finish here. I’m hoping they’ll let me transfer my classes here. Maybe I could walk over there with you when I’m done?” Please say yes, please say yes!

Yes!! “Sure, that’d be great. I’ll be around the shop, so just let me know when you’re done.”

“Great, I’ll see you in a little bit.” Willow headed into the back of the shop, which she had been told was the training room. Inside she found Giles showing Faith his various weapons. Buffy was sitting on one of the mats stretching her legs.

Faith looked up when she heard Willow walk in. “Hey, Red. You ready to get warmed up?” She smirked, seeing the smile that graced Willow’s face. It was obvious she had seen Tara.

“Yep, all ready!” Willow answered a bit too cheerily. She joined Faith on in the center of the room where they began their work out.

Ten minutes later, Tara came through the door carrying some weapons she had just cleaned for Giles. As she lay them down on the weapons table, she took the opportunity to see what Willow was doing. Her jaw dropped as she took in the scene before her. Willow and Faith were doing what she could only assume was some sort of form. They alternated between various kicks and punches. Willow’s movements were graceful, yet Tara could see the power behind each thrust. Her brow was knitted in concentration. She could tell that Willow was sweating. Her skin glistened with the moisture. Tara gulped as she watched Willow do a jump kick and land in the splits, only to jump back up again and come to rest firmly on the ground with her feet shoulder width apart. Deciding she had better leave the room now before she drew attention to herself, she walked back into the shop to finish helping Anya.

Half an hour later, Willow emerged from the training room dressed in a clean pair of clothes. She saw Tara polishing one of the counter tops and walked over to her. “Hey. All done.” She said.

Tara stopped her polishing and smiled at Willow. “Just let me finish up and I’ll be ready to go.”

“No problem.” Willow took a seat at the table and waited for Tara to finish. When she was done, the girls gathered their belongings and headed to the campus. They made with the small talk on the way. When they reached the Administration building, Tara told Willow where she needed to go. She wanted to walk with Willow, but knew that her class would be starting in a few minutes. Racking her brain, she came up with a plan that would allow her to spend more time alone with the redhead.

“I have to go to class now, but umm… I can meet you back here when I’m done. It will only be an hour. Maybe we could have some lunch afterwards?” she crossed her fingers.

Willow’s smile went from ear to ear. “Sure, I’d love to! I’ll meet you back here in about an hour then.”

“Great! See you later, Willow.” She smiled as she turned and headed to her class.

“Bye, Tara!” Willow called after her, silently doing a happy dance inside her head.

Boy, they must have started training Kung-Fu at a REALLY young age to reach black belt already :) Tough childhood or Willow being overarchiever as ever ?

I was wondering if Tara already knows she likes girls or has to figure that out yet (could be interesting). Is Tara a witch as well ? She sure likes to watch Willow practice martial arts, I wonder if sweat has anything to do with that... making clothing all clingy and such, hehe : -->>:

Maybe Willow can teach her some moves, heh.

Grimmy: Since the girls are in college I'm placing their ages around 21-22. In my experience with Kung Fu it took me about 5 1/2 years to become a blue belt. In the lines of Kung Fu, there are two more belts before you become a black belt. So, I'm figuring it took about 7 years for them to reach that goal, which would place them starting around the age of 13. *sigh* I wish I'd never quit! Hope that explains it!! And Willow teaching Tara some moves? Humm.. that could be very interesting...

Many thanks to Nickole for her wonderful advice! It was greatly appreciated!

CHAPTER THREE

Willow and Tara entered the Espresso Pump and sat down at a table near the back. When the waitress came up they both ordered tall Mocha’s and Chicken Salad sandwiches. As they waited for their order to arrive Tara decided to strike up a conversation.

“So, tell me about your life in Chicago.” She said.

Willow put down the napkin she had been fiddling with and looked at Tara. “Well, what do you want to know?” she asked.

“How long have you known Faith?”

“I’ve known her since I was six years old. We met in Kindergarten. From the first day of school we immediately became best friends. I was painfully shy, and she was one of those obnoxious kids that you always see running wild. We didn’t really have anything in common, but we came from the same type of home so, we just stuck together and looked out for each other.” A smile graced her lips as she remembered the first day she had met Faith. “The first time I met her, she kind of scared me. She came right up to me and started talking away. I wasn’t used to that, but she made me laugh. Over the years she got me to come out of my shell, and I got her to calm down a bit.”

“What do you mean when you say you come from the same type of home?” Tara asked, her curiosity getting the best of her.

“Well, our parents didn’t really pay attention to us. They weren’t mean, or anything, but it always seemed like they had better things to do than worry about us. So, like I said, we took care of each other. We were our own family. As soon as we graduated High School we got an apartment together and, up until two weeks ago, we have been living there for almost three years.”

They paused in their conversation as the waitress placed their orders in front of them. They ate in a comfortable silence and sipped their mocha’s. When they’d finished, they ordered another mocha each and this time it was Willow who started the conversation.

“So, now that you know a little about my past, tell me about you. Have you always lived in Sunnydale?”

“My whole life. I grew up next door to Xander. We’ve always been the best of friends. When Buffy moved here during our sophomore year the three of us just kind of clicked. I honestly don’t know what I would do without them.”

Willow smiled at Tara as she took a sip of her coffee. She knew all too well the importance of having good friends. She didn’t know where she would be now if it hadn’t been for Faith. “So, when did you find out Buffy was the Slayer?” she asked.

“Well, we had gone out one night and were hurrying to get back home since it was getting dark. Growing up here, you know not to be outside after the sun goes down. As we were walking, two vamps attacked us. Xander and I were scared out of our minds, but Buffy dusted them. That’s when she told us about her being the Slayer. I think she half expected us to laugh at her and never speak to her again, but we just thanked her for saving our lives and went on our way.”

“Wow” was all Willow could say. She wondered how she would react when she finally saw a vampire. It wasn’t really a pleasant thought, so she pushed it to the back of her mind.

“Hey, it’s still light out. You wanna go for a walk? We could go to the park. It’s really a lovely day.” Tara suggested. She was enjoying her time with the redhead, but didn’t want to spend all of it in a crowded place.

“That sounds great.” was Willow’s answer.

They paid for their meals and left the Espresso Pump. They walked down the sidewalk side by side. As their hands accidentally brushed, both girls felt tingles go up their arms and settle in their tummies, leaving butterflies in their wake.

Willow nervously fidgeted with the bottom of her shirt. “So, umm… tell me about your family.” She really hoped that had come out less high pitched than it had sounded in her ears.

“My parents are wonderful. They moved to San Francisco when I started college so, I don’t see them much, but we talk at least once a week. They’re really supportive of everything I do. They didn’t even freak out when they found out I was a practicing witch…” she let the statement hang in the air. She had had her suspicions that Willow also practiced, but wasn’t sure. She was hoping the reaction she got would answer her suspicions.

Willow stopped abruptly, causing Tara to stop and turn to look at her. “You’re a witch too?!? That’s great! I mean… I’ve been practicing for about four years now. I wasn’t sure if anyone else here practiced too. How long have you been into the craft?”

Tara laughed at her excitement. “I started reading about it during my sophomore year. I wasn’t any good at first, but you know, it takes time to learn.”

“This is so cool! Hey, maybe we could try some spells together sometime! That is, if you want to…” The prospect of having someone to practice with excited her beyond belief. The fact that that someone was Tara just heightened her excitement to an almost ecstatic level.

“I’d love to.” Tara simply said. She began walking again and Willow picked up the pace beside her. “So, Ms. Rosenberg, tell me… how long have you been practicing martial arts?”

They had reached the park and Tara found a bench for them to sit on. They sat on opposite ends and faced each other, their shoes softly touching on the ground beneath them. When they were comfortable Willow responded to Tara’s question.

“Well, Faith and I started taking Kung Fu lessons when we were 13 years old. My parents thought it would be a good idea for me… why I don’t know… it was one of the few things they felt I needed so I went along with it. I asked Faith to go with me. She talked her parents into it and we’ve been studying ever since. We both got our black belts a little less than a year ago. It really helps me focus. It also helped to, you know, boost my self-confidence.”

“I saw you warming up this morning. You looked really amazing.” Tara smiled shyly as she gave Willow the compliment.

“Thanks.” said Willow, a shy smile gracing her features as well.

They continued talking for a long time, learning about each other’s lives, their interests, and dreams. The fact that they felt so comfortable together wasn’t lost on either girl. They both knew that something amazing was building between them, but weren’t sure where it would lead to. As the afternoon slowly turned into evening, Tara reluctantly suggested they head back to the house before the night came. Upon their arrival, they found Buffy, Faith, and Giles preparing for patrol. It would be Faith’s first time out, simply as an observation, and to introduce her to the world of vampires and slaying. Willow gently hugged her friend and wished her luck.

As they were headed out the door, Buffy turned to the others and said “So, who’s up for Bronzing when we get done?”

“What’s Bronzing?” Faith asked.

“The Bronze is a club on the other side of town. The only club, actually. We usually meet up there after I patrol, helps to wind down.” Buffy explained.

Faith looked to her friend and shrugged. “What do you think, Red?”

“Sounds good to me. I could use a little care-free fun.” Tara smiled at the redhead’s comment. She was beginning to think everything she said was absolutely adorable.

“Great.” Buffy said. “We’ll meet you there around 11:00. See you later.” The three of them headed out the door and ventured off into the night.

It's nice to know Tara has nice parents, though it was extremely weird to read how she went to school with Xander and such. That's Willow role, swapping around for sure :)

Wouldn't mind so more, no sireee :D

Hey Sunspud--I just got caught up w/ this fic and I really like it! You know, it always feels like a crap-shoot when writers try alternate universes w/ the various roles/relationships mixed around, but yours really works. You write a great Faith (whom I've always found just fascinating, and I love the depiction of her as a good and protective friend) and the emerging connection b/w our girls is wonderfully written. I especially loved the dialogue b/w them at the Magic Shop when they were talking about random stuff but thinking about just how much they wanted to spend time together. And the visuals w/ Willow, glistening w/ sweat...please accept my most sincere thanks for that little gift.

I also really enjoy the general quality of your writing--the basics like sentence construction, you know? When it's absent, it just takes away so much more than people sometimes realize, at least for me. So kudos on that!

Can't wait for the next update, though of course I will because really, what choice do I have?

Thanks for the great story,

Mary

Nick: Hey, sweetie. Thanks for leaving feedback! And thanks again for answering my questions!! Talk to you later!

deixs: Hello to you! Two wonderful updates.. hehe Thanks for reading!

xita: Ah, Ms. Moderator Fantastico! I like atheletic Willow too.. yumm!!

snuggle79: Your feedback was just... lovely! Hehe

Rage More: Really glad you're liking this! Thanks for leaving feedback!

fairydust: *Hugs back to you* Glad you like! You're one crazy girl! Hehe.. later!

Grimmy: Weird, I know, but.. I hope it worked for you!

AntigoneUnbound: Ah, your comments were so true. That's one of the reasons I was worried about writing this. Writing AU is one thing, but when you incorporate it with stuff that's already there it tends to be a little hard... does that make sense? I hope so! Anyway, I'm glad to hear that I'm doing ok on that part. Faith has always been one of my favorite characters, but I wished she had been more involved in the gang, you know? She could have brought so much. As for our girls, I wasn't sure if anyone picked up on their dialogue at the Magic Shop. I'm glad to know you did! Willow glistening with sweat.. you're most welcome! I'll try not to keep you waiting long for an update! Oh, and my High School english teachers will be glad to know I retained some knowledge of grammar. Yay me!!

Thanks for all the lovely feedback! I'm working on the next part now. Hopefully I will have it up by the end of the night. If not, it will definitely be up tomorrow! Have a wonderful day, Kittens!!

Hi. I really like your start here. I love the AU stuff or at least semi-AU and them first meeting and everything. Obviously both girls are interested and attracted so presumably it won't take long to open up about that. Is Tara lesbian and do Buffy/Xander know? Obviously Faith knows about Willow. They are so cute when they are courting :) .

I really like your writing. Keep it up.

Oh, one other thing, you might want to post in the Update thread so everyone will know when you update. Thanks.

JustSkipIt: Hi! Thanks for posting. I'm glad you like. I enjoy reading AU stuff too... there seems to be one that I'm really enjoying now about W/T in Texas. Know anything about that? Oh, and thanks for the advice. I keep meaning to do that, but I always forget. I'll be sure to remember this time!

Well, here's the update! Hope you enjoy! *Runs off to post in the Update thread*

CHAPTER FOUR

The Cemetery

They entered the cemetery in a single file line. Buffy went first, Mr. Pointy tucked securely in her jacket sleeve. Faith was next, gripping the stake in her right hand as if it would provide comfort along with protection. Giles took up the rear, holding an axe in both hands. The only sound that could be heard was the crackling of leaves under their feet. They walked for a few minutes, finding nothing out of the ordinary, which was saying a lot considering where they were.

Finally, Buffy broke the silence. “Kinda quiet tonight.”

“Is it always like this?” Faith asked. Her eyes were on constant roam, trying to detect the slightest movement in the dark.

Buffy laughed at her remark. “Don’t I wish!” she said. “Usually when I go on patrol it involves more slaying and less patrolling. We’ll walk a little more, just to be sure.”

As soon as the words had left her mouth, three vampires emerged from a crypt directly in front of them. They snarled and licked their fangs as they eyed their evening meals. “Well, well, what do we have here boys?” said the vamp in front. “Three little humans out for a walk. You should know better than that.”

“And you should know better than to dress like that. What era are you stuck in? I mean, flare pants? Come on!” Buffy quipped as she took up a fighting stance and fingered her hidden stake.

“Careful what you say, little girl. They’ll be the last words you ever speak.” the vamp shot back.

“See, that’s where you’re wrong. I’m the slayer, and you’re about to be vapor.”

The two closest to her advanced, while the other started towards Faith and Giles. The lead vamp lunged for Buffy. She delivered a roundhouse that connected with the side of his head and sent him sprawling to the ground. She looked up in time to see a fist coming towards her face. It connected with her jaw and her head jerked sideways with the force of the blow. Recovering quickly, she delivered a series of punches to his chest and face. The first vamp, having recovered from the kick, grabbed her from behind. Using the second vamp as leverage, she flipped herself over the first one’s head and landed behind him, switching their positions. She then shoved him into the other vamp and as he came back around she brought her right hand up and struck him in the heart with her stake. When the dust cleared she jumped towards the remaining vamp and struck him in the face with a snap kick. He fell to the ground and Buffy landed with her feet planted on either side of him. Before he could move she plunged her stake into his heart. She turned around just in time to see Giles fall to the ground, having been hit in the head with a tree branch.

Giles hit the ground with a thud. Faith looked down at him and then looked back up at the vampire approaching her. She squared her shoulders and raised her fists. He came forward and swung the branch at her. She easily dodged it and kneed him in the stomach as he passed. He doubled over and dropped the branch. Faith smiled, but it quickly faded as the vamp straightened himself up and growled at her. He came at her swinging his fists. She blocked most of them, but a few connected with various parts of her body. She stepped into him and elbowed him in the throat. She expected the blow to knock the wind out of him, but it only stunned him. Seeing an opportunity, she plunged her stake into his chest. He let out a howl and looked down at the weapon protruding from his body. “I thought you were supposed to go poof when I did that?” Just then, he exploded into a cloud of dust. She sputtered and closed her eyes as the cloud surrounded her. When she opened them, she saw Buffy standing in front of her, stake in hand.

“It only works if you get the heart.” Buffy said. “You ok?”

“Five-by-five. Thanks for the help.” Faith looked over to where Giles lay on the ground. “Is he gonna be alright?’ she asked.

“Yeah, happens all the time. I’m surprised he can even remember his name.”

“Very funny.” Said Giles, beginning to awaken. “Would one of you mind helping me up?”

Buffy walked over and helped her Watcher to his feet. As he dusted himself off, he looked at Faith and said, “Well, I’d say that was quite a fight for your first time out.”

“Yeah, you did really good, Faith.” Added Buffy.

“I missed the heart.”

“No big. I missed the heart too my first time.”

“Really?” she asked.

“Yup. You’ll get the hang of it. You fought really well, though.” Buffy smiled at her as they moved to join Giles by the entry gate.

“Well, as much as I’d like to stay in the cemetery all night I suggest we head home.” He said.

“We’ll walk you home before we head to the Bronze.”

They left the cemetery and walked Giles to his apartment. The two girls then headed to the Bronze to meet the others. As they walked down the street Faith decided it would be a perfect time to ask Buffy about Tara.

Making it sound as casual as she could she said, “So, tell me about Tara.”

“Tara?” Buffy asked. “What do you want to know?”

“Well, you know, nothing specific. Maybe like umm… does she have a boyfriend?”

“A boyfriend? No, Tara doesn’t have a boyfriend.” Buffy answered, puzzled by the question.

“Why not? She seems like a nice girl.”

“She is. It’s just umm… Tara is… well, Tara’s gay.” Buffy finally got out.

“Really?!?” Faith squealed. “I mean, really? That’s great.”

Buffy stopped and turned to look at Faith. “Why do you ask? Do you like her?”

“What? No! I mean, yeah, I like her, but I wasn’t asking for myself…”

“You were asking for Willow.” Buffy cut in.

“How did you know?”

“I’ve seen the way they look at each other. It’s obvious they’re attracted to one another.”

“It is, isn’t it?” Faith mentally gave herself a pat on the back. She couldn’t wait for the opportunity to tell Willow. They started walking again and when they turned the corner, Faith got her first glimpse of the Bronze.

“Here we are.” Buffy said as they approached the doors.

The Bronze

The Bronze was full of people. The music was blaring, and it vibrated in their bones as they walked through the door. They found Willow, Tara, Xander, and Anya sitting on some couches by the stairs. Faith couldn’t help but smile as she noticed how close Willow and Tara were sitting. Willow looked up as she saw them approaching.

“Faith!” she yelled. She stood and embraced her friend. Pulling back she asked, “So, how’d it go?”

“Talk about a rush!” Faith excitedly answered as she sat down on the couch next to Willow. “Man, Buffy totally kicked ass!”

Seating herself on the other couch, Buffy said, “Hey, we both kicked ass. I mean what I said. You did really good tonight.” She looked off towards the dance floor and started bobbing her head to the beat of the music. She could still feel the adrenaline pumping through her veins. Turning back to Faith she asked, “Hey, you wanna go dance? Work off some steam. See how many heads we can turn?”

“Sure, B. Let’s do it.” Faith replied. As she stood, she turned her head to whisper in Willow’s ear. “She so digs you Red. Go for it.” She silently chuckled when she saw the blush cover Willow’s face.

“You okay?” Tara asked, noticing the redness in Willow’s cheeks.

“Who? Me? Oh yeah, I’m fine. Perfectly fine. Fine is me. I mean… oh god.” She glared at Faith’s retreating form, and mentally kicked herself for not having the ability to speak properly.

Luckily, her embarrassment was spared as Anya stated rather than asked, “Xander, dance with me.”

“Always willing to follow the pretty ladies.” Xander said, then quickly eased the glare he got from his girlfriend by saying, “Of course, you’re the only pretty lady I see, sweetie.” This seemed to please the ex-demon as she led him to the dance floor, leaving Willow and Tara alone.

“So, how ‘bout it? You wanna join them?” Tara asked.

“Sure. I’d love to.”

The two headed to the dance floor and found a vacant spot near the stage. They moved along with the music and laughed at each other’s inability to actually keep up with the beat. They both abruptly stopped dancing as the fast beat faded into a slower one. After standing still for what seemed like eternity, Willow stepped closer to Tara and placed her hands on the other girl’s waist. She smiled as Tara draped her own arms across Willow’s shoulders. Slowly, they swayed to the peaceful sounds of the music.

They were silent through the first verse of the song, simply enjoying the closeness of the other. As the chorus began, Tara asked, “So, why does Faith call you Red?”

Willow laughed and said, “Well, she has this thing with people whose names require more than one syllable. She either shortens them, or comes up with a nickname. I got stuck with Red because of my hair. If you hadn’t noticed, she’s already started calling Buffy, B. You don't have to worry about it though. I won't let her change your name in any way. Tara. I love your name.” She ducked her head, not meaning for that last statement to actually be said out loud. She looked up again as she heard Tara speak.

“Well, I guess that’s a good thing, and as much as I like your hair, I’m kind of partial to Willow myself.”

They both smiled at each other and felt the butterflies settle in their tummies again. Simultaneously, they stepped closer to each other and rested their heads on the other’s shoulder. Closing their eyes, their smiles never left their faces as they let the music and the presence of each other envelop them.

Buffy and Faith had gone back to the couch to wait out the slow song and order some drinks. As Buffy looked at the dance floor, she noticed Willow and Tara dancing closely together. She nudged Faith, who was seated with her back to the floor, and directed her attention to where she had been looking. Faith smiled as she saw her best friend dancing in the arms of Tara, not a space between their bodies as they swayed to the music. Seeing the look of complete happiness on Willow’s face she silently mouthed “You go, Red.”

I see someone else already mentioned 'Ta-ra' but it's still a nice name though :) I like how Willow and Tara seem to be instantly attracted to each other.

Can't say I was much suprised over how Faith fought well, she's got most of the training already. Just needs to practice the stake-in-heart thing a bit and she's ready.

Wonder what will happen if they get to practice spells together. Willow has to guide Tara this time around, I just hope she's carefull. And Tara could use some self-defense training, honest :)
