Pizza ParlorTara and Buffy walked to the pizza joint just off of campus. The girls had sat in the booth having friendly chatter as their pizza made it to the table. Buffy was really enjoying this time with Tara. It helped her so much. Tara was still being shy and stuttery, but she was joking around and talking at least!
“You better not tell Xander that I had a pizza affair behind his back, I’ll never live it down.” Buffy said with smile as she took her first bite from the pizza.
“You s-s-secret is safe with me” Tara said with a happy infliction in her voice as she tried to hold back the giggles as she took a drink from her soda.
“Come on I got the veggie pizza just for you, eat!” Buffy said as she pulls off a pizza and slides it over to Tara. Tara just smiles at the over protectiveness Buffy was displaying.
“So how is …. Dawnie? Haven’t had a lunch date with her lately” Tara said as she took a bite, wishing she could ask about Willow, but knew if she did that leaves a topic open for Buffy.
“Dawthie?” Buffy said with a mouth full. “Oh she’s good.” Buffy says as she takes a sip from her soda. Tara smiles, enjoying the simple conversation that stayed away from all the complicated things in her life. “She misses you a lot since you moved away.” Buffy says as she is starting to figure out a way to get Tara to talk.
“Oh,” is all Tara could manage as she drops her hands to her lap and looks at the table with half of her slice of pizza left.
“Tara, it’s just I don’t understand. I mean I do, the whole scary magic Willow thing, but she’s better now Tara. She’s stopped. I know you love her still, anyone can just see it in your eyes. I just don’t understand why you don’t go back? Why wont u come home? You obviously don’t want to be where you are.” Buffy couldn’t help but plead with the blonde in front of her. It was horrible having the two lovers apart. She felt broken.
“Buffy.. I…” Tara looked up into Buffy’s eyes with tears brimming on the edge of hers, “I-It’s just not something I can t-talk about now.” Tara said as she looks down at the table. “I love her, I do Buffy, but she doesn’t love me.”
“WHAT? Are you kidding me?” Buffy said in disbelief. Willow had been miss moody girl because Tara left, staying in her bedroom for days crying over Tara. She could not believe Tara saw Willow as not loving her. She couldn’t believe Tara was questioning Willow’s love. It had always been apparent.
“Tara, She loves you so much. For days she wouldn’t leave her room without one of us dragging her out. Tara, it’s obvious that your not in a good place right now emotionally if you can’t see something plain as day as Willow’s love for you.” Buffy was almost yelling at this point getting angry at Tara for even questioning Willow’s Love. “I can’t believe you are even doing this now! Tara do you know how often Willow wants to call you! See you!” At this point Buffy was standing up ranting and pacing by the booth the girls were once peacefully sitting in earlier.
Tara began to coward into the wall of the booth unable to look at Buffy with tears in her eyes. “I just can’t believe that you are being such a bitc…” Buffy stopped mid-sentence at the sight of Tara and began to cry and began to cry herself. Tara was too scared to move to Buffy to comfort her as tears streamed down her face and she plopped next to Tara on her bench.
“Tar, I just, I love you, and you are not happy, Willow is not happy. And we both know that if you two just got back together you would be happy. This would just end.” Buffy said as she wiped her tears and took Tara’s hand causing her to look up at her.
“Buffy.” Tara said almost inaudiable, “I just can’t. You don’t know everything. You don’t k-know… I’m broken, Buffy. I just need to glue the pieces back together if there are any pieces left of me. When I feel whole again Willow and I, if we both still want each other, will see what we have left between each other.” Tara said as her hand stroked Buffy’s cheek almost like a child trying to calm her.
“Tara I’m so sorry. I just… I don’t know. You and Willow, just you give all of us hope. And I love you both so much, it feels like I’m loosing part of you.” Buffy said looking straight at Tara sadly. “ I don’t see you anymore, we aren’t the same together, everything is just changing.”
Tara couldn’t help but smile. “I thought you wouldn’t want to see me, I thought you hated me, Buffy. Your Willow’s best friend I thought you hated me for leaving her, that I was a horrible person.”
“NO!” Buffy said so quickly that Tara couldn’t help but laugh and in turn Buffy had to laugh at her own excitement.
“Here we are a couple of duffs, having a big scene because we thought each other hated the other one.” Buffy said to relax the situation and gave Tara a warm hug.
“Well w-we had to have something t-to distract ourselves with while we waited for the cheese on the pizza to cool off.” Tara said with a smile that Buffy recognized as her mischievous smile.
“Yeah, we better leave a big tip.” Buffy said now that she looked around and noticed a couple of people were looking towards their table.
“Why? W-we were the lunch hour play for the customers.” Tara said trying to keep the joke alive.
“I’m sorry Tara” Buffy said again looking up with a guilty feeling.
“It’s ok.” Tara said, she knew Buffy wouldn’t understand, She saw Willow and her relationship almost like her parents and when they broke up, it had to be a lot like when her parents split up and knew there would be a lot of old emotions from that.
“Buffy, I know part of what your feeling is from your parent’s own split up, and I understand it’s ok.” Tara said with a sympathetic smile.
She remembered when Buffy talked about her parents splitting up. It was out on the porch and she was painting it was sort of their bonding time. A lot of time Buffy would talk at length thinking Tara would eventually stop listening, but Tara listened quietly only now and then respectfully asking a question that would make Buffy re-evaluate the way she reacted to a certain situation or the emotions she was feeling. Tara felt like Buffy was almost a younger sister at time, but other times her older sister when she got over protective about things with her. Like after what happened with Glory, if anyone asked questions about it to Tara, she would always cut in and break it up. Tara remembered when Anya made the nickname “Schizo” for Tara, the first time Buffy heard it she immediately made her way over to Anya but was intercepted before able to do whatever she had planned.
Almost as if Buffy was reading her mind she said, “Tara, I miss our talks.” Buffy looked up at Tara completely vulnerable with her hands laid across the table.
“I do too.” Tara said shyly.
“Do you think maybe we can do this again? Without all the yelling and crying” Buffy asked with hope.
“Yeah” Tara gave Buffy a smile. “I’d l-like that a lot.”
Tara and Buffy just held each other’s eyes and smiled for a while then they looked back to the table and the pizza became very interesting.
“Eat” Buffy said with a smile.
Tara and Buffy left the restaurant laughing at the amount of money Buffy put on the table as a tip as they walked back to campus.
“I can’t b-belive you put that much! I mean we were somewhat n-noisy, but…” Tara said laughing.
“Oh come on the waiter loved us by the time we left.” Buffy said back.
“I don’t t-think you should mistake relief as l-love.” Tara said trying to hold back the giggles.
“Oh come on he was kind of cute… maybe…”
“Gay” Tara said immediately.
“What?” Buffy was no ready to believe that such a cute waiter could be gay.
“No question, Buffy, come on!” Tara said so nonchalantly that led to Buffy chasing after Tara tickling her.
“Tara!”
Tara stopped in her tracks looking up to the familiar voice. “W-Willow,” the giggling subsided to the stuttering and shyness that was there earlier as Tara looked at the ground.
