Postby Blue Athame 1 » Sun Aug 18, 2002 5:04 pm

Spoiler Warning for Season 6 -"Graves"and "Seeing Red"

Title - "The Time Chronicles."

Rating - A for angst...PG-13 for real and O for okay as it gets better.

Copyright Disclaimer - All characters belong to Joss and ME...we can blame them and thank them at the same time.

Note - Something new here...a little different from what I usually do. The story deals with the fall out from Season 6...picks right up after Graves. May be difficult to read, not easy subject matter. I will make it right in the end however...I promise.

"The Time Chronicles"

Dawn moved quickly to answer the pounding at the door.

"Xander...oh my God, Willow...Willow? Is she?"

"No...she's okay...I think." Xander answered stepping inside the hallway, cradling Willow gently in his arms. "She just collapsed, she just stopped and collapsed and has been like this ever since."

Dawn stared at Willow lightly stroking the red hair. Willow was pressed into Xander's chest breathing shallowly. Dawn saw that there was blood, a lot of blood, on Willow and Xander both.

"My god, is she, you, are you hurt? What should we do?"

"We should put her down, it is not her blood, " Xander answered, "it's mine."

"Dawn?" Buffy was calling from the kitchen. Rounding the corner from the dining room she found the three in the front hall.

"Dawn?....Xander?....Willow?...My god, is she..." Buffy froze staring at her friend.

"No" both answered at the same time "she's alive."

"Is she sleeping, is she tired from being all uh, evil?" Dawn asked looking at Xander.

"Is she hurt?" Buffy interrupted touching Willow now, seeing all the blood. "Did you have to hurt her?"

Xander looked confused and tired. He swung his head between the two, the questions were too many, too much, his head and body ached.

"I don't know," Xander answered Dawn, "and it's my blood" he answered again for Buffy.

Buffy looked carefully at Xander finally realizing what they were doing. Both Willow and Xander needed care. "Lets get her upstairs....can you do it...do you want me to take her?"

"No, we've come this far and I've got her pretty well, she's pretty light you know, our Wil, I've got her."

Buffy followed Xander up the stairs as he felt his way tiredly with his feet. She was spotting him should he falter but knew that she needed to let him do this.

"Is she?" Dawn asked following them to the bedroom. "Is she, you know, our Willow?"

"Yes," Buffy and Xander answered in unison. "she's our Willow."

They knew, they both knew, they could feel it, they could feel her, they could see her. They knew when Willow was with them, she had returned.

Xander placed Willow gently on her bed. As he stood Buffy and Dawn could see the blood and tears on his shirt.

Buffy examined Xander carefully. "Do you need a doctor?" She asked worried, positioning herself next to Willow on the bed, placing a protective hand on her arm.

"No, I think they look worse then they are, just superficial, she could, not hurt me, not really."

"Really, she tried pretty hard with me," responded Buffy almost smiling. "How did you stop her?"

"I....uh...I....told her that I loved her. Nothing fancy, no weapons...just love."

"That's all?"

Xander nodded looking at Willow and sitting down on the end of the bed touching her foot.

"Yup, that's all. I told her that I loved her. I'll spare you my crayon speech cause that was kind of lame although it might have worked a little. No, it was the love you. I told her that if I was going to die and if the world was going to end, I wanted to be there with her. There was no other place that I would want to be. She somehow heard me. Willow couldn't kill me, she couldn't kill us.

"I don't know, I think she tried pretty hard."

"Did she, really?" Dawn had moved up on the other side of the bed and was now stroking Willow's hair again. "She certainly had enough power, she could have killed us if she wanted, but she didn't...I don't think our real Willow inside ever could."

Buffy looked at her best friend laying motionless on the bed. "No, I guess not" she sighed knowing that there were countless times that Willow would have willingly given her life for them. That it was Willow that brought her back, gave her life again. What was left of Willow under all that pain and grief, under all that dark magic and dark power would not let them die, she couldn't.

"But old evilly Willow could sure hurt us some, huh? We need to remind her when she wakes up that it is not nice to get all kick ass on your friends." Xander smiled trying to joke.

"Yeah, I know and we will, but I think that when she wakes up...there is going to be a world of pain."

The three sat quietly for a moment looking at Willow.

"What do we do?" Dawn whispered.

"I don't know....I guess we should start by getting you cleaned up Xander...but still what about Wil...I wish we knew why she is like this."

"We could take her to the hospital." Dawn suggested.

"And say what...she OD'd on black magic?" Xander questioned shaking his head.

"Oh, right, well do we even know if she is okay?"

"Well, not really, she is breathing though, that's a start."

Buffy shifted her position on the bed so she could better see Willow's face. "Xander, did something happen...did she fall...did she hit her head...could there be something that hurt her?"

Xander looked for a moment as though he might cry. "Tara's death, Tara's death. She collapsed in my arms and cried as she changed back to Willow. It was deep, she wailed Buffy, it was like holding a dying animal. My heart broke, I couldn't bear to see her in such pain....and then she was quiet, like she just went to sleep. So I brought her back here." Tears were running down Xander's face. He was shaking his head looking at the floor.

"Tara." Dawn whispered almost inaudibly.

Buffy leaned over to whisper in Willow's ear. "Wils, are you sleeping, are you here, we love you, come back to us."

Buffy waited, there was no response. "I don't know, is she sleeping, comatose, catatonic? I don't know. God...got to think."

"Could she be catatonic like you were?" Xander asked suddenly looking up.

"I don't know." Buffy answered.

"You were catatonic, I don't remember you being catatonic."

"I was catatonic after you were taken by Glory. I just couldn't take anymore, I kind of snapped. It was Willow who came and found me. She reached inside my mind and brought me back. But...." Buffy leaned over again to her friend, " I don't know how to do that Willow, I don't have that kind of power, I don't know how to help you."

"Oh God" Xander sighed.

"I wish Giles was here, he'd know what to do."

"Giles, my god and Anya, are they okay?" Xander started just registering that they were missing.

"Yes, they are at the hospital. I was on the phone with Anya when you came."

"Giles?" Dawn asked feeling badly that she had gotten so wrapped up in only Willow.

"Okay, he is going to be okay. He improved once Willow did, once Xander stopped her." Buffy looked at Xander and smiled. "You did it Xander, you saved us, me, Dawn, Giles, Willow, you saved us all."

"And Anya?"

"She was knocked around a bit by Willow magic, but it was really Giles Willow wanted, he came with power."

"So she is okay?"

"Yes Xander she is okay."

"And she knows I saved the world?"

"Yes, I believe she does, I think Giles told her."

"Good, maybe that will count for something, saving the world and all."

Buffy almost laughed but was silenced again by the sight of Willow and Dawn.

Dawn looked pale and tired, she seemed to be staring off into space.

"I guess we need to figure out what to do now." Buffy sighed.

"What do you mean?"

"What to do, what is our plan?"

"We could start by cleaning the floor." Dawn whispered quietly her eyes fixed.

"The floor?" Buffy stood and moved to see where Dawn was staring."Oh god."

"What?" questioned Xander turning on the bed to see. "Oh god."

"Tara" Buffy gasped.

All three fixed on the dried pool of blood on the floor.

"It still is bad." Xander stammered.

"Yes," Buffy murmured finally slowing enough to realize the loss. Tears began to sting her eyes. "Our Tara."

"We left her again." Dawn wept "We left her alone, she's all alone."

Buffy moved to take Dawn in her arms. "No, we'll take care of her, shes our family, we'll take care of her."

"She always took care of us, she always knew what to do."

Dawn moaned.

"I know, I know, she did, she's our Tara, we will take care of her, and Willow too."

Buffy looked at Willow almost lifeless on the bed. "Where are you Wil? Where are you?"

************************************************************************

Willow stirred feeling the soft folds of fabric against her cheek.

'So tired' she thought moving a little more. 'So tired.'

Willow could smell something familiar, the scent of lavender perhaps. Was she at home, had she been dreaming? Now there was a voice, a quiet gentle voice. "Willow...Willow."

A hand was on her head stroking her hair. "Willow?"

Willow's eyes fluttered open then squeezed back shut against the light. Her eyes hurt, her throat was raw, she felt ravaged.

"Willow?"

Willow tried again this time turning towards the voice.

"Tara?"

"Willow" her name was whispered.

"Tara?" Willow questioned again realizing that her head was in Tara's lap. "Tara?"

Willow felt oddly confused and disoriented. Her mind and thinking were muddy, addled. "Baby, is that you?"

"Yes sweetie, it's me. Take a moment and let your eyes adjust, you have been sleeping a very long time.

"Have I been asleep, I feel so tired."

"Well maybe sleeping is not the right word, just give yourself a minute, you will know."

"Where are we?" Willow wondered aloud. They were outside on a hill in the grass. Willow did not recognize this place. She rolled so she could look up into Tara's beautiful face. Tara smiled looking down at her. "Where are we baby, I don't remember how we got here."

"I'm not sure Wil, I don't know."

Willow looked at Tara her memory slowly returning. Things, bad things, dark things, death and murder, hate and despair.

"Oh...." she cried feeling a sudden surge of pain. She shut her eyes against the visions "Oh god, no."

Tara reached down and cradled her but was silent.

Willow began to weep. "No....no....I had the most horrible dream...you were...you were taken from me...you were dead...and I...I...couldn't bear it..." Willow sobbed her body wracked with grief.

"I know Wil. It's okay honey, it's okay now."

"How could you?"

"Because it wasn't a dream, it was real."

Willow looked up at Tara through burning blurry eyes, she could hardly breathe, her heart ached in her chest. "No, no dream?"

"No dream."

"It happened?"

"Yes honey, it happened?"

"You are...dead?"

"Yes Willow, I am dead."

Willow curled into a ball and began to wail again. Tara held her tightly, the pain was overwhelming. It was Willow's pain, Tara's pain, the pain of the world.

"Did I kill us? Are we dead?" Willow finally choked.

"No honey, just me."

"No?"

"No."

"But how am I here? Why? Where are we?"

"I don't know, but it must be for a good reason...I have a feeling...I am not quite sure...but I think we are in a holding place...or I am and you are visiting."

"Tara, I did, I did terrible things."

"I know."

"I killed Warren."

"I know."

"I killed Rack."

"I know."

"I almost killed our friends."

"You mean our family? Yes, I know."

"I..."

"Willow, you were in tremendous pain and you were possessed by dark forces. While it is no excuse, I understand. I do not believe that it was supposed to pass this way. I am sorry Willow, I am sorry I was taken from you."

"Am I dreaming you?"

"I don't think so...I think we are another dimension...maybe between worlds. I don't know what to do here yet, I have been waiting, watching, and then you came. I don't think it was supposed to be my time."

Willow held her place against Tara. "Can I stay here? Can I stay? I don't want to live if I don't have you."

"I don't know Wil, I am not sure why we are here. What I do know is that you have to go on living. You rest here with me for a bit, perhaps we can sort this out. There must be a reason for all of this...there just must be. Rest now, I am with you."

Willow closed her eyes succumbing to the gentle caresses. " I love you Tara." She whispered drifting back to twilight. "I love you."

The Time Chronicles....continued.

Chapter 2

"There, is that better?"

"Yes, I think so." Xander answered touching the bandages. "Thanks Buffy."

Buffy smiled at her friend rolling the gauze back into a tight cylinder.

"Quite the little hospital you have here."

"Well, you know, slayage and all, injuries are an occupational hazard as you well know."

"I see that." Xander marveled admiring the box of bandages and gauze.

"Now a few of those are kind of deep, you need to go easy for awhile. I put steri-strips on them and hope that they will do the trick, if not you may need stitches."

"Stitches, ewww no stitches, lets just make the steri's work."

"We'll watch them, need to be careful of infection. I will help you with the dressing changes if you like."

"I like." Xander answered quickly smiling lovingly at his friend. "Thanks Buff" he said again.

Buffy returned a tired smile and put the lid back on her medicine box. "You should go home now and get some rest."

Xander looked down then back at Buffy. "Can't I stay here? Maybe sleep on the couch. I don't want to leave yet, I think, well, I feel like I want to stay, just to be close."

"Whatever you want Xander, you know you can stay."

Xander looked relieved. "Are you going to rest now?"

"No, I am going to free Dawn of Willow duty and then I will...uh...clean the floor. I don't want her in there when I am doing it and I don't want Willow to wake to find it."

"I can help."

"No. I think you should rest and probably stay still for awhile. Besides, I want to do it....I feel like I should."

Xander appraised his friend. Her face was drawn, her eyes pained. A thought struck him as he suddenly realized what she was not saying. Reaching over to put a hand on her arm he whispered "It's not your fault Buffy, it was an accident."

Buffy's eyes began to fill with tears. She took a breath and looked away. "It shouldn't have happened, I should have been able to protect her."

"You couldn't protect her, you didn't see this coming, none of us did."

"She was an innocent, a bystander, it was me they wanted, she should not have been taken by this."

"She was not an innocent, she was a scoobie just like the rest of us, she knew the risks."

"I didn't see, I didn't know." Buffy sobbed quietly.

"None of us did Buffy, Willow especially, she would never let anything hurt Tara. She would die first."

"She almost did."

"Yes, she almost did."

"Why couldn't we save her? Why couldn't Wil bring her back, she brought me back."

"I am sure she tried...maybe that is why she got all evilly scary, because she couldn't. Maybe she couldn't without Tara...Tara balanced her, you know that, as powerful as Willow is I don't know if she could have brought you back without her."

"I guess then it is easy to understand why Willow would want to follow her, she can not bear to be without Tara, it is like missing a part of herself."

"Yes...Willow would want to be with Tara, wherever she is...they complete each other."

"No wonder Willow is out of it."

"Yeah."

"You should rest now." Buffy leaned in and gave Xander a rare hug. "Thank you...you are just Mr. Fixit today aren't you?"

"Yup, thats me...save the world, comfort my friends...just wait until you see my next act." He joked half heartedly.

Xander watched as Buffy got up stiffly and moved towards the door. He heard her in the bathroom running water presumably into a bucket. He wanted to fix it for her, Willow, all of them. He sighed now up and in the doorway watching as Buffy quietly disappeared into Willow and Tara's room.

********************************************************************

The water was now red with Tara's blood, so was Buffy's hands. She found herself staring at it, them. Leaning back she wearily let the heavy brush sink down into the water. Pain was stalking her. Since her death she could hardly feel, now through the death of a loved one she felt again. She could feel this, her, Willow, it was overwhelming. Taking a deep breath she began to cry again, hard. Gasping, crying, heaving with hurt she buried her face in the towel she was holding. "God, what have I done, oh god. Who am I if I can not protect the ones I love. I'm sorry Tara...I'm sorry."

Blurry eyed and consumed by exhaustion Buffy pulled herself up onto the end of the bed. There lay Willow still unmoving, lost to her friend. Buffy crawled up and laid down next to Willow placing a hand on Willow's still shoulder. Buffy curled in close. "I'm sorry Willow...I'm sorry" she whispered quietly into her best friends ear. Buffy closed her eyes and finally succumbed to sleep.

********************************************************************

Willow felt the wind against her cheek and a slight stirring in her hair. There was pressure on her shoulder but as she lifted her head she realized that there was nothing there, only Tara's hand in her hair.

"Tara?"

"Yes Willow"

"I'm still with you?"

"Yes honey, you are still here."

"Do we know where here is yet?"

"I still believe it is some sort of holding place...for my soul...you know, one of the heavenly dimensions."

"And me?"

"I think you are in a meditative state."

"Uh...don't feel very meditative here."

"I mean altered....like an altered state of consciousness...I think you are in the alpha level...kind of like we did when you traveled to the Nether Realms."

"Oooo...I remember that spell, Willow said her eyes brightening."

Tara smiled her best knowing smile. "Yes baby that was quite a spell."

Willow's memory was short lived overshadowed by the reality of why she was in this state. "So...this is a Nether Realm."

"I guess you could classify it as such."

"What were you doing?"

"Oh, I was talking to Buffy."

Willow sat up and looked around. "Is she here too?"

"No, just sleeping...which is another level of consciousness that one can visit on...you know that."

"Can she hear you."

"I think so, she is sleeping with you."

"Me?"

"Yes, with you, or rather your body, she is resting with you, keeping you safe."

"Like a dog."

"Like a dog?"

"Yes, I overheard one of our enemies once say she was like a dog, loyal like a dog, they were counting on her to come save me."

"And she did."

"Yes, she did."

"I guess she is like a dog then, she won't leave you Willow, she won't give up, she will try to make things right."

"Why are you talking to her?"

"Because she can hear me, because she is hurt and needs reassurance, because she wants to help."

"Do you know what to do now? Can we fix this?"

"So many questions Willow...always so many questions."

"Hey, inquiring minds want to know."

"I am not sure honey, I am doing my best, this is hard for me to understand too. I am beginning to know things. It is as though someone is talking to me the way I am talking to you and Buffy."

"Tell me what to do."

"Right now it isn't up to you Willow. It is up to Buffy, she is the one who must work this out."

"Work what out?"

"Time, there has been some kind of change in our time, an interruption, an alteration, I think it stems from Buffy....but of course it involves us, we are connected. When the course of someone's destiny is changed it ripples through to everyone else in their world...it changes all of our destinies...it changed mine."

"Tara, did we do this? Did we do this by bringing her back from the dead?"

"I don't know where it happened, only that it did. The only way to correct it is to somehow go back and adjust it...I think that is right...not sure yet...but I think I am getting closer to understanding."

"How can she do that? How will she know what to do?"

"That is part of what we need to work out, maybe that is why you are allowed to be with me. I can't help but feel that there must be a chance, that nothing is final yet."

Willow looked carefully at her love. "Is there a chance I can have you back?"

Tara nodded. "Maybe sweetie, maybe there is a chance...it was not my time to die."

Willow leaned over and outlined Tara's lips with her forefinger. Tara smiled at the touch and leaned forward to kiss Willow tenderly.

"Time." Willow whispered against Tara's lips.

"Yes, time." Tara answered deepening their kiss.

"Time." Buffy mumbled stirring against Willow's quiet body, "Time."

*looks up from where she is sitting out side ur mansion* I got courious about you Lady Athame, so i went a searching. I was pleased to find such a lovely fic. I think the idea of being able to change Tara's fate, well acctualy everyones fate is a good idea, very celver the way you tied Buffy bringing back disrupiting the order of destinay and time. It all fits well, like a good puzzle which i most courious to see the finishing of. I wait for more.

oh my. this is wonderful. really enjoyng the concept of a bit of a disruption caused by bringing buffy back. looking forward to how you link this all together.

also as always i love your ability to remain true to the characters. oddly enough, i really see this with xander.

Quote:
Xander looked for a moment as though he might cry. "Tara's death, Tara's death...

i thought this really fit, as i've always thought that if any of the scoobies was capable of pulling that expression off, it would be xander. now, i said oddly enough there, since i am not the world's biggest xanman fan. (dear god and it rhymes. oy.)

also this...

I'll spare you my crayon speech cause that was kind of lame although it might have worked a little.

...cracked me up. cause, well, yeah total agreement there.

i realize that i pretty much just focused on the first bit here, but i prefer to read, think, and then feedback. i will likely respond to part 2 this evening.

really this is wonderful my Lady. I look forward to much more.

lovely, Joy, simply lovely.

I won't be your winter and I won't be anyone's excuse to cry.

This was an excellent update. Very intriguing. The description of Buffy cleaning the blood was well done. --"Since her death she could hardly feel, now through the death of a loved one she felt again."-- Very well put.

I'm curious to see at what point the ripple in time occured. There are so many possibilities.

I wanted to thank you all for your responses so far. As you all probably figured it isnt light reading....although I do promise it will get better. It is just the subject matter...in order to stay true to where I see the story is I have tried to approach it in a real way....trust me...as painful as it is to read it has been painful to write....but that is the nature of grief and guilt and all those other powerful feelings. Thank you for having the patience to slog through it...I suspect that there are some who have not been willing to take a bite due to the subject matter. So you know, there is a reason why I always have our girls together at the end, kind of a reward for all the deep wading....They are there for balance....a little sweetness so that it doesnt get too overwhelming. The hard stuff will get better too I promise...I am an ever hopeful writer.

Thank you for your time and support...particularly for this one which is a little dicier and very different for me....I appreciate you interest.

Athame.

As good as it is to see Buffy acting responsibly its a shame it took Tara's death to bring her out of her cloud of self involvement.

Love that Tara is still trying to console everyone, such is her caring nature.

Intrigued by the intuition Tara has about the altering of time. Gives me hope that our girls can be together again.

Thanks Athame!

alright so running a bit later than i had intended on the reply thing. bad me.

so even into the second bit i am liking Xander. this confuses me. i don't like him. yet, you're managing to change my opinion bit by bit.

huh. comparing Buffy to a dog. hee. i like it. (ok a little biased perhaps) fitting as loyalty has always seemed to be important to Buffy and all of the scoobies. hmmm.... if only more people could be more dog-like.

Hey, inquiring minds want to know.

this worked really well in breaking up a bit of tension in the conversation between Willow and Tara.

my poor brain can't really form much more in the way of coherent thought now. (maybe leftover from being SHOT!) *glares at the dragon*

*rolls over onto back* see?

more when you can would be lovely. really.

The Lady Writes

My lady, may I just echo the chorus the bulldog has offered. I too would love to read more of this. I know you are not feeling well and I will wait. Yet, I do now wish for you to forget that we are still out here. Anxiously awaiting the next update.

However, I cannot be nearly as cute as bulldog. I find it unseemly at the mere thought of a dragon rolling over. Yet, if it would help to get an update. I will do just that.

My lady, we miss your words. We miss your presence. We miss you. I miss you.
