Come Back
Tara sat alone in her dorm room. The only light came from a single candle she had lit at the other end of the room. Sitting in the corner with her knees pulled up to her chin and her arms wrapped around her legs, she gazed out of the window. The weather outside was terrible. Tara hadn’t seen it rain so much in a long time. She was vaguely aware of the radio playing music in the background, but her thoughts were elsewhere. Elsewhere, meaning Willow. Three months had passed since she had left. Three whole months. A lot had happened during that time. Giles had left. Amy had been turned human again, Willow had almost got Dawn and herself killed and finally given up the magick, not to mention this thing with Spike and Buffy. Yeah, a lot had happened, but despite it all, Tara always ended up in the same seat, thinking about the same things. Always Willow. She’d hurt Tara so much. When she found out Willow had put that spell on her that was the last straw. Tara had told her, she either gave up the magick or she was gone. It took Dawn getting hurt and the realization of Tara leaving and what she’d done to her, for Willow to finally understand how out of control she was. Tara knew how hard it had been for the redhead. She’d made sure Buffy told her everything, and she did. No matter how horrible, Tara was told. And it was hard for her. Listening to what Willow was going through, having to stop herself from running off to comfort the redhead was the hardest thing Tara had ever done, but she new that staying away from Willow was the only way to make her realize what she’d done.
Tara had spent hours sitting in her chair, asking herself if she could give Willow another chance, but she never gave herself an answer. There was a tiny problem with that this time. Willow had given up magick. Completely. She’d sworn off it all. Just like she’d promised. They’d started spending time together, like before, and Tara could feel herself falling in love with Willow all over again. But she couldn’t just walk up to Willow and kiss her. She didn’t have the right to do that. They had to build trust between them again. They couldn’t just pick up where they left off, because they’re still madly in love with each other. Could they? As the song on the radio ended, the DJ began to talk.
DJ: Next up, a classic. Recently covered by Jessica Garlic, this goes out to Tara from Willow. She says that she’s sorry and still loves you.
Tara’s brow furrowed as she listened. Had she heard right?
DJ: She says she misses you and will do anything to get you back.
Her mind began racing with thoughts as the song began to play.
And believe me, I know it
I’ve come to depend on you
In my eyes, can you see?
That someone’s still hurting me
What can I say that will make up, for letting you down?>
Tara sat in silence. The song words swept over her in a rush of sorrow. God, she missed Willow so much.
Cme back (come back) if you love me
How will I survive with out you?
(I’m no good with out you)
Baby come back (come back) if you need me>
She did need Willow. So much it hurt at times. She wanted to be with her. Wanted to kiss her and touch her, just be near her. It was killing her inside not being able to do those things any more, now that they were ‘just friends’.
Always in my heart, I know that I want you
Come back>
A tear slid down Tara’s check as she closed her eyes and bit her bottom lip. Was this song how Willow was feeling? She knew Willow had tried. She’d tried so hard and gotten through it. Tara couldn’t be any prouder. But there was always this thing at the back of her head asking “What if?” The only way to make that voice go away was by building up the trust between them again. Right?
Can’t believe that I told you
And that was my big mistake
Every hour, every day,
What can I do to make it through?>
Tara didn’t know how she made it through the days sometimes. If she didn’t see Willow she was miserable, and if she did, she was even worse because she knew she had to watch what she said. She couldn’t say “I love you” any more, or call Willow “Baby” or “Sweetie”, and quite often she’d almost let it slip, but managed to stop herself just in time.
I miss you so bad
And it’s breaking my heart
So come back>
Tara couldn’t stop the tears from falling. She needed to get out of the dorm. She needed to get out and walk. Think things over. No matter what the weather was like. Grabbing her leather coat, she turned off the radio and left the dorm.
**********
Darkness surrounded her. She sat alone in the living room of the summers’ house, tears poured from her eyes and Willow sobbed. The radio next to her played the song she had requested for Tara and she wondered if the witch was listening to it.
Probably not. She probably turned off the radio as soon as she heard what I said. Why did I have to push it? We were friends again. Everything was going fine. I couldn’t help it. I had to push. Great work, Rosenberg. She probably hates you again.
How will I survive with out you?
(I’m not good without you)
Baby come back (come back) if you need me
Maybe I was wrong, and I tried to pretend but,
Always in my heart, I know that I want you
Come back>
As the song came to an end, Willow sighed. She knew the mistakes she’d made, and she was so sorry for them. Did Tara know how sorry she was? Surely she did.
Don’t break my heart>
The song ended and Willow got up to turn the radio off. She couldn’t describe how much she missed Tara. It was like a constant pain in her heart that only went away when she was around the witch. The other woman was her heart and soul, and it killed Willow to be away from her. She missed waking up in the mornings and seeing Tara asleep next to her. She missed the smell of her hair, which for some reason, was always vanilla. She missed the way Tara brushed her hair before she got into bed and the way she always made pancakes for Dawn in the morning.
They had all noticed how Willow had been different since Tara had left. Buffy especially. It was as if part of the redhead was missing. She wasn’t complete without Tara. That’s exactly how Willow felt. With Tara gone, now they weren’t together, she felt empty. Lost. Like part of her was missing. A part of her Tara had taken with her when she left. Would that part of her ever be returned? Would she and Tara ever get back together? Willow honestly didn’t know.
She turned the living room light off and started to walk up the stairs when someone knocked on the door.
Willow: What the….
Willow glanced at the clock.
Willow: It’s almost midnight. And it’s raining. Who’d call this late?
Willow turned around and walked back down the stairs. She took the chain off the door and unlocked it. Turning the handle, she opened the door to find a soaking wet Tara standing in front of her.
Tara: Hi.
Willow: Tara? What are you…. you’re wet.
Tara: It’s raining.
They looked at each other for a long moment and without warning, Tara walked forward and captured Willow’s lips in a kiss. Willow wrapped an arm around Tara's waist and lifted her hand to rest on the blonde's neck, bringing the taller girl closer. Tara had one hand resting on Willow’s hip and the other tangled in the copper hair she loved so much. The kiss grew more passionate and became more intense by the second. Tara’s clothes were soaking wet and because she was pressed against Willow, the redhead’s clothes were also getting wet. Without warning, Willow pulled away and almost fell over. Tara reached out and caught the redhead before she fell. Entwining their fingers with one hand and holding onto Willow with the other. Willow looked up, into Tara’s eyes and tried to speak.
Willow: You…. Kiss…. Wow….
Tara chuckled and smiled at Willow. Remembering how to use the English language, Willow began to talk.
Willow: Did you…. The song? Did you-
Tara nodded.
Tara: I did.
Willow: Oh. Is that why you…. Did you…?
Willow stumbled over her words. She wanted to say so much, but it all got confused. Tara let go of Willow’s hand and brought it up to stroke the redhead’s hair.
Tara: You know, everything has to happen over time. You can’t rush into things without thinking.
Tara dropped her hand and walked back towards the door. Turning around again, she looked at Willow and continued.
Tara: You need to rebuild walls that were ripped down, and you have to ask yourself if it can work. Find out if you still want the same things. It’s a long, important process and…. Can we just skip it?
Willow lifted her gaze to look at Tara. Was this really happening? Or was she just dreaming again?
Tara: I want to be with you again. I want you, Willow. It’ll always be you.
Willow’s face broke out in the most spectacular smile Tara had ever seen. The redhead walked forward, with confidence, and their lips met again in a kiss more passionate than the last. Her lips never leaving Willow’s, Tara pushed the front door shut with her hand. She wouldn’t be leaving any time soon.
The End
