Not that this is dumb, wrong, boring, not-me, or any of the above. It's just that, the two are kinda, equally fun in my book
Has anyone else noticed the fics favour one style over the other? Or am I just not reading the right fics?

You're not reading the right fics.
I try to have a smattering of both in my fics, as I believe that fair's fair and it's always nice to have some variety.
I think possibly most writers might use the "finger" method because that allows the women to touch one another as well as kiss one another, and it also means they can get easy access. It's generally easier to slide fingers into panties in fic, or down trousers, or up skirts or whatever.
Having a head stuck in those places is rather obviously time consuming and requires a little more strategy than just stickin' yer fingers in. Although I do believe it often produces more thrilling results.
Like I said, you're clearly reading the wrong fics. Heh. Go for someone more imaginative next time.

Ummm, I've actually wondered that, too. And not just the propensity for manual over oral, but for manual over everything. As (most) everyone knows, there are a LOT of fun things for a coupla girls to do in bed. Yes, I have seen just about every position and method in fan fic, but I agree that the "finger method" seems to be the leader.
Why?
First and foremost, I agree with Ruth that manual is the easiest to write in that fingers are sneaky and versatile sex toys. They can come into play in any setting with little or no set up. But second, I have my own personal theory that manual stimulation seems to be like lesbian missionary position or something. You know, something that "good girls" who are truly in love would do. It's romantic and, like Ruth said, allows mutual pleasuring and that all-important face-to-face contact with lots of deep, passionate kissing. Since Willow and Tara, in particular, are painted as the poster couple for true love and romance, I think a lot of writers probably embrace this type of lovemaking. I mean "69" provides both mutual pleasuring AND oral sex, but I think it falls somewhat further down on the vanilla scale than the "finger method" for some writers. Plus, it's harder to describe neatly in paragraph form.
Me? I'd find Willow and Tara romantic in most any position. I have no doubt they know how to have fun in all kinds of ways.

For my part, I have to agree with Willowlicious (Amy, is it?) and say that for whatever reason, finger trolling (not to be confused with board trolling) seems to lend itself more easily to prose than certain other fun activities. More than that, though, I just see Willow and Tara in particular as having a big thing for each other's hands. That of course has NOTHING to do with the fact that, I, myself, have a big thing for women's hands. Certainly not. It's all about Willowhand, baby. Not to mention Tarafingers. Oral sex is great fun to write, too, but man, oh man... those hands. *happy sigh*

One thing I'd like to add as a thought. It might be that some writers are subconciously writing W/T sex in thier fics as extensions of W/T interactions in the show.
i.e., due to whatever combination of stupid factors, Willow and Tara don't often kiss, and don't often use thier mouths when they interact lovingly, i.e, not just few mouth kisses, but also no neck or shoulder or palm kisses either, no finger sucking, no feeding each other meals, no air kisses, no licking of lips, etc. But they do touch each other. Hold hands, touch elbows, trail hands down arms, intertwine fingers, stroke hair, etc.
So maybe it's easier for some writers to see them continuing to use thier hands to make love more than thier mouths.
(In the whopping two W/T sex scenes I've ever written, one was pretty hands-centric, while the other...well, Tara is yummy, and Willow was hungry. As it were.

Len, you make a great point. I think if I had to define the tactile nature of Willow and Tara, it would probably be that they are always reaching for one another. Their fingers intertwined. Back rubbing. Hand holding. Finger brushing.
I've also noticed that they like eye contact. Especially after Hell's Bells, it seems to me that looking at one another is vitally important to their connection. I know that in a lot of fanfics, much is made of them making eye contact and meeting gazes. For them, I think it's a way of communicating without words that suits their characters. I usually do a lot of eye contact in my fics, mainly because I think Aly and Amber have particularly beautiful eyes. But you know, looks...heh heh. It means stuff.

As a reader of almost all fic I see a combination of the 2, although fingers are much more common.

Just another humble opinion... but I had never even considered this as something to contemplate when reading ro writing fic! Reading or writing I tend to get carried away in the moment and just go with the flow... I think some research might be in order revisiting old fics.
I definitely agree about the tactile nature of their relationship though - and the connection through their eyes. A connection which just makes it more painful when one or the other looks away because they cannot take that sort of intensity at that moment. All too common in this current season.
Oh well, off to the archives in the name of serious research.

Yet to write a smut scene myself. Mind you, I write so damned slowly these days. Haven't really thought about how it can be done - the writing, that is - I mean, I've thought about it, as all dirty little boys do!

Wrong fanfic definately. I write Xena fan fiction and I use plenty of both. I am constantly inspired by wife.The smuttier the better in my book. Excuse me but tits,tongues,fingers and ass are my favorite subject to write about.

What's the emergency? Ah, yes, Overuse of Digital-Manual Stimulation in F/F Fanfic...Which can lead not only to boredom, but a severe case of carpell-tunnel syndrome.

I prescribe reading other fics - like mine. I have stroven (in the past) to provide a high quality of funny-smut and equally high occurrance of mutual oral examination and stimulation.

For my part, I have to agree with Willowlicious (Amy, is it?) and say that for whatever reason, finger trolling (not to be confused with board trolling) seems to lend itself more easily to prose than certain other fun activities. More than that, though, I just see Willow and Tara in particular as having a big thing for each other's hands. That of course has NOTHING to do with the fact that, I, myself, have a big thing for women's hands. Certainly not. It's all about Willowhand, baby. Not to mention Tarafingers. Oral sex is great fun to write, too, but man, oh man... those hands. *happy sigh*

Len, you make a great point. I think if I had to define the tactile nature of Willow and Tara, it would probably be that they are always reaching for one another. Their fingers intertwined. Back rubbing. Hand holding. Finger brushing.
I've also noticed that they like eye contact. Especially after Hell's Bells, it seems to me that looking at one another is vitally important to their connection. I know that in a lot of fanfics, much is made of them making eye contact and meeting gazes. For them, I think it's a way of communicating without words that suits their characters. I usually do a lot of eye contact in my fics, mainly because I think Aly and Amber have particularly beautiful eyes. But you know, looks...heh heh. It means stuff.
