Rosie To Come Out April 23

I was watching tv today, and it appears that Rosie O'Donnell will confirm what many of us have already suspected for years, that she is indeed a lesbian. This will supposedly happen when she publishes her new book in April. Here is a link to what people.com had to say about it.

Ohh good news on the book. We actually fly out to NYC on the day the book is released so I guess Iknow what my reading material will be during my relaxing vacation this year.

Anyone out there know if she will be doing any signings anywhere in the city.

We are going to try and get on the show again this year.. we were lucky and drew #1 on the standby lottery last year on my gf birthday... we both have her koosh balls hanging from our desk lamps in our study (doesn't that sound painful!)

It would be good to see her again before she hangs up her chat hat, and wayyy kewl to see her if in fact she does finally come out !

Heres hoping a few others will decide to follow her outta the closet !

If many people have been expecting that she will come out, and publicists are saying that people will be surprised with the contents of the book, I think it's highly possible that she may not be gay - or may not come out. I'm just putting two and two together here with the info I've been given. I'd never actually suspected that Rosie was gay - but hey. Good for her whatever she does. I've always loved her as an entertainer and will think she's great no matter what gets said about her.

YAY FOR ROSIE!

Well it could just be a ruse to sell more books... not sure if that is the way to go about it tho'..it's not like Rosie needs the extra push for sales...this is Rosie

Well, the old gaydar has been wrong before but since the first moment I saw Rosie many years ago I've always thought she could be a 'sista' LOL plus I do know folks who know folks who know... Isn't that how the 'Enquirer' puts it LOL

As you say, it doesn't bother me one way or the other either. She is a great person who does a lot of good for others.

Well, it almost goes without saying that Rosie is indeed gay - those 'on the inside' have known for years, it's more a technical secret than an official one.

It seems now that she's getting out of the talk show business, she's ready to move on and make it fully public.

The interesting thing here, is how much of a non-issue this is - the public reaction comes down to, "hey, she's gay, good for her." Which really is how it should be.

I think the key is how widespread the knowledge she's gay has been for so long...if it doesn't surprise anyone, it's hard for it to be shocking.

I mean, if Jodie Foster came out tomorrow, who exactly would be up in arms, aside from a few folks in caves who'd be up in arms anyway?

I think that it's very cool for Rosie to do it if she's ready, and I think she'll get a lot of support and love for it.

IMHO, I just can't wait for the time when people are treated like W/T on the show: not much of a second glance at them from their friends/loved ones, nor from the public at large, just blind acceptance on the spot.

Sort Of Like:
"Oh, you're gay now...cool. Anyway, do still want to go to that party on Tuesday?"

I can dream, right?

love,

e.

Hey Pixie Muso, I think those quotes were separate. THat is, people were first saying Ohhhh, you'll all be surprised by the revelations in Rosie's book! And THEN it was leaked that Rosie comes out in the book. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

I am not a huge Rosie fan but it's well-known she's a big old dyke. She thanked her partner, Kelli, at the Emmy's last year (or some other awards show -- I can't remember now) and told her she loved her. Of course she didn't explain WHO Kelli was but a lot of people knew. As Kalita noted, it's more of a technical secret than a real, honest to goodness never suspected never saw a trail of evidence longer than the Nile River kinda secret.

No, how it really should be is:

Just watched Will & Grace and this was the episode with Rosie playing the mother of Jack's son, and to my complete surprise, her character was a lesbian, can you believe that, do you think this is some kind of foreshadowing of some sort

I think it's good that she's coming out herself, as I don't like it when people are "outed" against their will.

My mom's middle age friends have figured Rosie was gay for quite some time now. Mind you, they're very religious and don't like her for that reason. My mom is always saying "well, that's real (their religion) of you. Rosie has done more good for people and children than every single person in that church. I think she's wonderful and kind and generous and yet they can't see past her sexuality.

Oh, and her gf is a hottie. She's a cute little blonde.

There's no such thing as a coincidence on TV, especially Rosie's character coming out as a lesbian on a prime-time gay-themed show like W&G at a time when her publicity people are trying to drum up interest in her new book. For anyone not living under a rock her coming out will be about as much of a surprise as Ellen's. Of course there are plenty of troglodytes who will be predictably titillated by the manufactured media hype. I just hope Rosie, who's always been bold, takes it one step over the line. I'd like to see her married to her girlfriend on Oprah by a female priest. Now that would be must-see tv.

I have a question and I hope everyone won't hate me for asking it, but I am genuinely confused and if you have an opinion about it, I would like to hear it. I know that no one can be inside someone else's mind, so obviously you can't tell me the motivation Rosie has for anything she does, but what was with all of the crush on Tom Cruise stuff? She was always calling him "my Tommy" and saying she was in love with him, etc. I have been around when people have said casually that it would be a good thing for acceptance and understanding if Rosie would come out, etc., and I have always said "But she isn't gay. She has said over and over that she loves Tom Cruise and gets goose bumps over him." I would then lecture the person that it is a stereotype to say that a woman is gay because she doesn't wear dresses or adopts children as a single parent. Gay women and heterosexual women can both make those choices. Now I feel like an idiot.

Moonchild, I certainly don't hate you. I think there's no way for any of us to know why Rosie so publically crushed out on Tom Cruise all the time (unless it's in tbe book) but here are POSSIBLE reasons:
1) Lesbians can and do have crushes on the opposite sex and she may have had one on Tom.
2) She may have sorta had a crush on him and played it up in public to minimize gossip about her being gay when she didn't want it known
3) She didn't have one at all and did it solely to save face in public and squash any rumors of her being gay (or her publicity people told her to do something along those lines).
4) As there have been PLENTY of rumors about Tom being gay maybe over drinks one night at the Secret Gay Celebrity Lounge they decided to perform Rosie has a crush on Tom in public and then laughed and laughed in private over it.

There are other possibilities but that's what I came up with off the top of my head.

I think the bottom line is that just because someone is married or has public lovers of the opposite sex or takes out a full page ad in the paper declaring their heterosexuality or crushes out on someone of the opposite sex in a big public way doesn't necessarily mean squat. I'm NOT saying we should start queering every single celeb, but the truth is that no matter how much progress has been made in regards to lesbian/gay/bi visibility and acceptance, the norm is still straight and many famous people fear (whether it's legitimate or not) that they will be punished if their sexual orientation is revealed. I mean, even for people who are NOT famous the closet exists; people get married for the wrong and unhappy reasons; and fronts are maintained at great personal cost. I know people in my own life who are not on TV shows or movies who are closeted. I imagine the struggles would be magnified if you're in the public domain.

Hmmm well I have been known to go around saying I think Antonio Banderas is yummie. I'd say that if Rosie O'Donnell does come out (ha ha) and says she is gay then she is, does not matter what she said about Tom Cruise or any other man.

Ah and Judy, you have such a wonderful way with words, I wish you would post more.

Editing to add: well now Judy, my comment was referring to your first post in this thread, how psychic of you to honor my request at the very same time I made this post.

i remember back when Now and Then (a movie with rosie, demi moore, christina ricci and a bunch of other great women) was coming out that Rosie's character was originally supposed to be a lesbian and that the scene where Chrissy (the character played by tom hanks' wife whose name is escaping me right now) says "you're living in sin with your boyfriend, bob" (okay, not the exact quote, but something like that), was originally supposed to be about her living with her girlfriend (maybe minus the living in sin bit, i don't remember anymore, that was quite a few years ago). and i remember that rosie was upset that the director/producers/whomever it was changed that part of her character.

Thanks for your answers--I really do appreciate them. I'm ignorant about a lot of things (growing up in Indiana in the country, etc) and I find that the older I get, the less I know. I appreciate it when people are willing to educate me in a patient way, so Thanks.

I love the movie you are talking about and I have it on video. I'm going to have to pull the video out and watch it again. I don't remember thinking that Rosie's character was gay, but it probably didn't matter to me when I was watching it, because I just love mysteries and coming-of-age type stories. Anyway, I remember they had the boy that tormented her kiss her (as Christina Ricci playing her as an young woman) and I remember the line about living in sin, but at the time I thought they were emphasizing the character's unwillingness to commit to marriage. Thanks for bringing it up--I'm gonna enjoy watching it again. Sometimes I forget I have videos since I got the DVD player!

Righteo Judy, thanks for your imput. I haven't really been following up any of this stuff with Rosie's book or her talk show (we don't get it in Australia). So, I guess I've never been part of the crowd that suspected about her apparent homosexuality. That article just seemed a bit confusing to me - either that or I was just bloody tired when I read it. lol

Thanks again.

My friends and I talked about the Tom Cruise thing...we always figured it was either a big in-joke (given the long running rumors about Tom), or that she really did have a crush on him that she played up somewhat for laughs. (I have a friend who's been with her gf happily for 11 years, but she's utterly crushed out on Sean Bean (Um, the guy who plays Boromir in Lord of the Rings) and has a standing "No foul free pass" understandig about him with her gf if the opportunity should (somehow) arise.

I read somewhere that the producers for W&G wanted to change the script and make Rosie's character straight, and she insisted that they don't. I have to say I'm really glad that she's coming out. I think that she can have a good effect on a lot of people's perceptions, especially when it comes to gay people as parents.

Yep Hugin,

My gf has a crush on Moulin Rouge's Ewan Mcgregor(hope I spelt that right).

I though don't share well with others so there are no free passes after the wedding.

On a weird note my gf has always wanted to take over for Rosie. Singing and dancing, making fun of the NRA. Sorry this is so random.

Well, my gf is friends with Rosie's publicist (or something like that) and she says she's gay. Plus Rosie slipped one day on her show when she was interviewing someone (I think it was Meg Ryan) and basically said something about her first date with Kelly (her gf). Meg quickly changed the subject for her.

Watching Will & Grace last night I just felt like it was Rosie saying those words. I heard in the news that she does talk about dating women in her book. So, yeah, I think she'll come out in her book.
