Buffy Comic #35: False Memories

Postby The Rose » Thu Aug 09, 2001 8:30 am

I have not seen a thread for this, so I thought I would start one.
Has anyone read Buffy #35? It starts in the middle of the fifth season after Riley has left *Sniffle, sniffle*, and Buffy knows Dawn
is not her sister, but Dawn does not.

Semi Spoilers:
Dawn is being the typical pain-in-the-butt sister following Buffy around on patrols and
stuff.

There are some flashbacks from season one including Dawn.

At the end, Dawn gets into some trouble.

Unfortunately, Tara is not in this one but
overall a good introduction of Dawn. I want another Willow and Tara comic!!!!

This comic really bothered me which is why I didn't post about it. No Tara, barely any Willow, but that wasn't what bothered me most.

What really bothered me is that Buffy doesn't really remember the implanted memories. She acts confused. There was never any evidence of that on the show!

I'll agree with you on that one, Xita. Everyone's mind accepted the memories without question.

On the show, After Buffy finds out Dawn is the key, she starts getting confused.

No Place like Home:
Buffy to Dawn: You have never been able to take an apology ever since...(She does not finish her sentence realizing it is not true)

Family:
Buffy to Giles: (re;their father) When he bailed on us, I remember Dawn cried for a week. Except she didn't, but I can still feel what it was like.

But see she remembers it, her confusion stems not from not remembering the fake memories, but from knowing that she can't trust her memories.

In the comic book, her confusion is not remembering the fake memories. That's completely different and not really what happened on the show. For instance:

quote:

Dawn: He was really nice, huh? I mean, remember when you first started going out, when we all went to the park and rode the carousel?

Buffy: "No... I mean yes, of course."

Now see that doesn't work at all. Her first reaction is to not remember? NO. See on the show, it would have been like, "of course I remember," then some aside in her mind, 'but it didn't really happen did it?'

Different reactions, there's no reason for her not to remember that event (the implanted memories).

That is odd. I wonder if it's intentional. When is this set though? Is it before or after Buffy finds out?

This issue was slightly disjointed for me, doesn't really click with the previous one but the drawing is slightly better. Heh, which isn't really saying much.

Ok, can anyone tell me who the other guy in the flashback is? One is Xander... and the other one looks like Riley, but that can't be. (Well, maybe then that is actually the reason why Buffy is confused after the flashback? I certainly am confused.)

I have to admit that I can't remember much of the original episode the scene is based on, since it is years ago since I have seen it last.

Anyone?
